85 % - 95 % *
Premium Animal Ingredients
15 %
Our beef, bison and lamb come from animals who are typically raised on ranches where they are cared for by farmers who ensure they receive the appropriate nutrition. Our premium meats are high in protein and are a natural source of essential nutrients your pet requires.
FREE-RUN CHICKENS AND TURKEYS
Our free-run chicken and turkey are not housed in cages and are able to move in a barn without outdoor access. They are free from the threat of predators and have access to clean, fresh water and feed 100% of the time. The premium poultry used in ORIJEN pet food is packed with the animal protein your dog or cat needs.
CAGE-FREE EGGS
Our cage-free eggs come from hens that are raised in a barn. These hens are free to walk around the hen house, perch on roosts, and to lay eggs in nests. These high-quality eggs provide a great source of protein for dogs because they include essential amino acids that they need.
WILD-CAUGHT OR RESPONSIBLY
FARM-RAISED FISH
We work diligently to build partnerships with fisheries around the world, to provide us with a high quality, nutrient-rich array of fish. This includes both wild-caught and responsibly farm-raised fish. Our primary focus is to procure fish that will add essential proteins and healthy fats for balanced nutrition in every recipe we craft for your pet.
SHOULD YOU SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET?
The choice to spay or neuter your pet may be one of the most important decisions you make impacting their longterm health - and your wallet! Studies have found that neutering could have many health benefits for your pet and can prevent them from developing serious health issues in the future, not to mention an unwanted litter.
What does it mean to neuter my pet?
Neutering is a surgery performed to remove an animal’s reproductive organ:
• Removal of the ovaries and uterus in females is also referred to as spay.
• Removal of the testicles in males is also referred to as castration.
Pets recover quickly from the surgery and, in young and healthy pets, the anesthesia risk is very low.
When should I spay or neuter my pet?
Cats are sexually mature at around 6 months old usually, but some cats can present some signs as young as 4 months old. So, it is recommended to neuter them at around 5-6 months old.
For dogs, it depends on the breed. It is recommended to neuter a small breed dog at 6 months old. Larger breed dogs should be neutered when they are older, around 9-15 months old.
Does it cause a behavioral change for my pet?
While a pet’s fundamental personality will not change after a spay or neuter surgery, there are some changes you might observe, including:
• Dogs: Hinders mounting, reduces marking, suppresses territorial instincts.
• Cats: Hinders roaming, suppresses fighting, reduces urge to mark (spray).
How much does the surgery cost?
Prices in general start around 500 AED for the procedure, depending on your vet and the sex of your pet. Additional costs may apply to any tests that your vet recommends prior to surgery.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PET IS POISONED
This could save their life
Dogs and Cats are curious creatures, they explore the world around them using their senses. But curiosity can lead our furry friends into trouble if they encounter something potentially poisonous or toxic.
Certain foods, chemicals, plants and fertilizers can all be toxic to our pets. Harmful exposure can happen through ingestion, inhalation and contact with the skin. So, what do you do if you suspect your pet has been poisoned? These are steps to take to help you and your pet.
Common Substances That are Poisonous to Your Pet
Type of Substance Examples
Human Foods
Over-the-Counter Medications
Home and Garden Products
Insecticides and Anti-Pest Products
Plants
Chocolate, caffeine, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, alcohol, sugar-free items that contain xylitol
Cold medications, vitamins such as vitamin D3, antidepressant medications, pain relievers like acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen
Fertilizer and plant foods, antifreeze, pool chemicals, bleach, detergents, house paints, wood stains
Bug repellents, bug sprays, ant bait, roach baits, rat bait, slug and snail bait, gopher bait
Lily, sago palm, foxglove, mistletoe, oleander, dieffenbachia.
Symptoms Of Poisoning To Look For
Poisoning symptoms can vary depending on the type of toxin and the part of the body affected. Additionally, poisoning symptoms can develop very quickly or be delayed by several hours, making it difficult to know if/how poisoning occurred.
Here are some symptoms that may indicate your pet has been poisoned:
• Lethargy
• Diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Belly pain
• Loss of appetite
• Bleeding
• Tremors or convulsions
• Difficulty walking or loss of balance
• Rapid breathing
• Difficulty breathing
• Drooling or foaming from the mouth
• Changes in urination habits (more or less)
• Changes in drinking habits (more or less)
• Change in gum color (pale, gray, purple, dark red is all considered abnormal)
• Abnormal heartbeat or pulse
If you see these signs in your pet, or you suspect your pet has been poisoned, follow the steps below:
First things first: Stay calm.
Separate Your Pet From the Poison
If you witness your pet ingest or come into contact with a toxic substance, remove that substance from their reach immediately.
Make Note of the Poison
Before you call or visit your vet, quickly make note of the substance you believe has poisoned your pet. If you’re able to tell your vet exactly what they have ingested, that will help your veterinarian determine the best treatment.
Contact or see a veterinarian
How you proceed next will depend on your pet’s condition:
If your pet seems stable: Call a veterinarian for advice.
• This may be your primary care vet if the incident occurs during their business hours, or a 24-hour emergency vet for after-hours incidents.
If your pet does not seem stable: Proceed to the closest vet hospital.
Traveling with a sick pet can be difficult, here’s our tips to keep in mind:
• If your pet has collapsed, lay them gently on the seat of the car as you transport them to the vet. Try to keep their head and neck extended so they can breathe easily.
• If your pet is actively vomiting, let them do so, then clear the vomit away immediately.
• If possible, travel to the vet with another person. One of you can care for your pet while the other drives.
• Remember to bring the toxic substance and/or its packaging with you—but only if you can safely do so. Do not risk exposure to yourself and others if you cannot safely transport the substance.
2023 VACCINE CHECKLIST FOR DOGS IN THE UAE
Just like children, dogs need vaccines to fight off dangerous viral and bacterial diseases, without them your pet’s health is at high risk. It is our job as responsible pet parents, to ensure our furry friends are up to date year-on-year and that they remain happy and healthy.
There are two groups of vaccinations your furry friend should have:
• Core vaccines: Include the vaccinations that are considered essential for all dogs involving diseases that are easily transferred and are fatal. These diseases are Rabies, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, and Distemper.
• Non-core vaccines: Include protection against diseases that are dependent upon environmental exposure and lifestyle. These vaccinations include Kennel cough and leptospirosis vaccines.
Vaccination schedule for your puppy/dog:
First thing to note is that there is not one schedule to fit all dogs. Factoring in the country you live in and your dog’s individual risk factors, all come into play when deciding on what’s best for your pup. This decision should always be made in agreement with a veterinarian professional who is aware of your dog’s health history.
That said, here is a generally accepted guideline of a vaccination schedule

Is Your Cat Hydrated?
Did you know that just like us humans, water makes up about 60-70% of your cat’s body?
Dehydration in cats can quickly become a big problem leading to excess loss of fluid from their body, which is why water is key to your cat’s circulation, digestion and physical energy.
Look out for these signs to check if your cat is dehydrated
• Dry mouth
• Sunken eyes
• Lethargy
• Constipation
• Poor skin elasticity
• Increased heart rate
How much water do cats need?
Ideally, cats need 3.5 to 4.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of their body weight. However, If your cat’s diet primarily consists of wet food, you may notice that your cat isn’t drinking as much water as required for her body weight. This is completely normal, as wet food contains 70 - 80% of water and is keeping your cat hydrated.
There are a few simple things we recommend that you can do to encourage your cat to stay hydrated.
1 2 3 4 5 6
Clean Their Water Bowl Regularly
Water bowls are prone to developing mineral deposits and slime leading to growth of bad bacteria. Even if the water looks fine, it might not be fresh and your cat will know the difference. You must clean your cat’s bowl everyday with hot water. If you are using a water fountain, you should clean it once a week.
Try a Drinking Fountain
Just like their ancestors, cats are naturally drawn to moving water and it tastes fresher to them. It may take a few days for your cat to get used to drinking from a fountain, but they will end up thanking you for it. Be sure to also leave a bowl of water while they are adjusting to a water fountain.
Make Sure You Have Enough Water Bowls
If you have multiple cats in your household, you should have multiple water bowls as some cats can be territorial and may not let others drink from the bowl they consider theirs.
Keep It At An Ideal Space
Set a dedicated spot for your cat’s water bowl. Some cats may not like their dishes placed close to their litter tray or in unsafe areas. Ideally, it should be placed in a rather non-crowded corner of your household.
Incorporate Wet Food In Their Diet
Adding wet food into the mix is probably the easiest way to get your kitty consuming more water. A lot of wet foods are extremely palatable, like Little BigPaw and Applaws, so you won’t have any issues encouraging your cat to gobble them up. They also contain a lot more water than dry food, so you can worry less about how much your cat is drinking out of the water bowl.
Consult With Your Vet
After considering the above recommendations, if you notice that your cat still isn’t drinking enough or any amount of water it may be a sign of an underlying condition and must be consulted with your vet immediately.

Success Stories From K9 Friends
Meet Dobby. My K9 Friends adoption pup. Our adventure began with a visit to K9 Friends where the staff first made sure I was a suitable puppy parent before I was introduced to a few pups. I scooped up Dobby for cuddles and he chose me - wrapping his legs tight around my arms and wagging his tail. As with all rescue pups, he took a little time to find his feet and gain confidence but is now a happy little pup living his best life. He is definitely not a morning pup - he loves his bed. He is a sweetnatured, mischievous pup who loves nothing more than unstuffing his toys or meeting his doggy daycare palsand he still gives the best cuddles @Dobby.greenwood

My foster mum and dad found me while only thinking about sponsoring a dog, but they felt an instant connection with me that quickly turned into adoption. I now live in the UK with my Saluki sister Masirah. Me, my sister and my humans couldn’t be happier that we found each other and bought a house with a big garden to start our future life!

Once by owners who didn’t have time for him and a second time after his new owners’ marital status changed. This time Tai has found his #forever home because his family has flown him over to France where he lives with his fur brother Loca. Tai gets to play in the lush greenery of France and enjoys the cool air of Europe which is much suited for his breed. Tai’s story is proof that every dog can get the perfect home.
Written by Katrina MDesert Love: Desert Love: THEY NEED YOU TOO!
Ever so often, here at K9 Friends we get questions like, “isn’t it better to have a purebred” or “will a rescued mix breed adjust to family life after being out for so long” and many more. These are common misconceptions about adopting a dog from a rescue shelter, we aim to debunk these myths and educate those who are looking to open their home to a new pup.
Read on to learn more about our wonderful desert mix rescues who are looking for their forever families.
MYTH: Rescue dogs cannot be trained. Realistically, despite knowing all their basic obedience commands, any dog that enters your home will need a little training to understand your routine. Our dogs spend the majority of their time with volunteers who teach them basic training however, as any dog they too will need extra training when they move to a new home (and yes, it is very much possible).
MYTH: They probably have health issues or get sick often.
Shelter dogs are not damaged, in fact the local desert mixes are the perfect choice to adopt in the UAE as they do well in the weather here and abroad if they move out. Additionally, shelter dogs can be seen as lower maintenance as they could be less susceptible to the diseases and health concerns that can be hereditary in certain pure breeds, due to smaller gene pools. At K9 Friends, we
ensure that every dog is health checked, neutered (if old enough), vaccinated and then carefully matched to its prospective new family.
MYTH: You won’t know the dog’s history or where they come from. In some cases, this may be true however, as our volunteers, dog walkers and foster parents spend a lot of time with the dogs, they have observed and gained information about the personality and traits
of each dog that are in our care which then helps us match them with the right family.
MYTH: Shelter dogs are too scared or shy.
Like us humans, dogs have their own personalities. Some dogs will be resilient to the stress of being in a dog shelter, but others may struggle. And, despite their fear or shyness at the shelter, your pup may only need a little time to settle into a routine once they get home.

2023)HOW TO GET YOUR DOG BACK TO A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Pet foods rich in high-quality, meatbased fats can help to support healthy weight gain. Dogs can easily metabolize animal-based fats and convert them into energy, so they need nutrient-dense, meat-rich and high-calorie food to get them on the path to an ideal weight.
You can also try changing their food habits – try feeding them four slightly smaller meals each day, rather than just one or two.
Growing puppies also need more calories than adult dogs, as they use their energy to grow at a rapid pace, alongside all the playing, sniffing and licking they do. Check that you are feeding your pup the correct amount for their weight and age before considering increasing their daily intake to ensure they are getting enough calories to get them through the day.
If you think your dog’s loss of weight could be due to a health issue, it’s best you consult your vet on how to get them back to their optimum weight.
