FROM FOES TO FRIENDS:
Navigating the Path to a Harmonious Pet Duo
Here’s a guide on how to properly introduce your Cat to a Dog!
Introducing a new pet to your furry family can be quite the adventure, but it doesn’t have to be a stressful one. With the right preparation and a patient approach, cats and dogs can learn to co-exist harmoniously.
First, do some research. Certain dog breeds, like Terriers, and Greyhounds, may have a higher prey drive, making
it trickier for them to get along with cats. Consider your current pet’s temperament and how they might handle this new addition. Seeking advice from your veterinarian, who knows your pet well, can provide valuable insights on introducing a new dog or cat.
WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM 04
Prepare Their Rooms: Create separate, cozy areas for your cat and dog with all their essentials. Food, water bowls, litter, and toys should be readily available. Make sure the rooms are safe and free of potential hazards.
Be Patient: Building a strong foundation takes time. Every pet is unique, and the introduction process might
not follow a straight line. Be prepared to repeat steps and allow them to adjust at their own pace. If you have a new puppy, invest time in training them to understand commands like “leave it” and “stay.”
1 3 6 7 2
Keep Them Separate: Initially, keep your pets in separate rooms. This allows them to acclimate to their new surroundings and become familiar with each other’s scents. Maintain this separation for about 3 to 4 days, gradually allowing them to explore other areas of the house while alone.
Their Love for Food: Use mealtimes as an opportunity for your pets to become acquainted without direct contact. Let them eat on opposite sides of a door, allowing them to smell and hear each other while associating positive emotions with the other pet’s presence.
First Meetings: When it’s time for the first faceto-face interaction, do it in a controlled environment. Allow your cat and dog to see each other through a cracked door during mealtime. This positive association sets the stage for a potential friendship. Later, on a leash, walk the dog toward the cat, ensuring
you can maintain control and give the cat an escape route if needed.
Short Sessions: Limit initial interactions to around five minutes to avoid overwhelming your pets. Repeat these sessions daily, gradually extending the duration. Reward your dog’s good behavior around the cat with treats, creating positive associations.
Gradual Freedom: When your dog shows minimal interest in the cat and respects their space, remove the leash and let them freely explore the room together. Keep the leash nearby for quick intervention if needed. Return to leashed interactions if either pet becomes stressed.
Seek professional help if unsure or struggling with pet introductions. Early intervention from an animal behaviorist is vital when there could be unresolved behavioral problems. Slow and patient introductions prevent sour relationships. If one pet is stressed, separate them. Time and patience build a healthy bond.

A GUIDE TO TEACHING YOUR DOG HOW TO SWIM
From water acclimation to safety techniques, discover the secrets to turning
your dog into a confident swimmer.
Dogs are known to be great swimmers, but not all are natural born water lovers. As a pet owner, introducing your dog to the water can be an excellent way to exercise and beat summer. However, you must do it safely and properly to avoid risking your dog’s life. Here are some tips on introducing your dog to the water.
START SLOWLY
It is important to introduce your dog to water gradually. Start by letting your dog dip its paws in shallow water and gradually increase the depth as they get comfortable.
You can use a kiddie pool or a shallow stream for the first introduction. Do not throw your dog into the water since it can be frightening and create a negative experience for your dog.
USE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
Positive reinforcement is an effective way to introduce your dog to the water. Bring along your dog’s favorite treats, toys, and rewards to encourage and motivate them. Praise your dog when they enter the water, swim, or even just stand in the water. It is likely that they will
WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM 06
love swimming as a result of the positive association with water and rewards.
USE A LIFE JACKET
Just like humans, not all dogs are natural swimmers. Therefore, it’s essential to invest in a life jacket, especially for puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with medical conditions. The life jacket will help keep your dog afloat and ensure their safety while learning to swim.
STAY CLOSE AND SUPERVISE
There are several things you need to consider when introducing your puppy to water, especially if they have never been in the water before. Ensure the water is calm and avoid areas with strong currents or waves. Keep a close eye on your dog to ensure they don’t get too tired or panicked while in the water.
TEACH BASIC SWIMMING SKILLS
Teaching your dog basic swimming skills can help them build confidence in the water. Start by teaching them how to paddle with their front and back legs. Encourage them to move around and keep their head above water. Avoid overworking your dog, and let them rest after a few minutes of swimming.
RINSE AND DRY
After swimming, rinse your dog thoroughly with fresh water to remove chlorine or saltwater. Dry them off with a towel or a blow dryer on a low setting to prevent skin irritation or ear infections.
Introducing your dog to the water can be a fun and rewarding experience for both of you. However, it is absolutely necessary to do it safely and properly to avoid accidents. Start slowly, use positive reinforcement, use a life jacket, stay close and supervise, teach basic swimming skills, and rinse and dry your dog after swimming. You can help your dog become a confident and happy swimmer with these tips!

Cat Nap Chronicles: Decoding why your cat sleeps so much (and Why It’s Purrrfectly Normal)
Ever walked in on your cat snoozing away in the middle of day while you are busting your back making lunch? Or just glanced over at your kitten curled up in a sun puddle during your hectic zoom call meetings? Chances are, you have caught them sleeping more often than you’ve seen them doing anything else, almost to the point of concern. This article’s sole aim is to ease your worries about this. When it comes to your cat, it is vital to trust your instincts.
Loving them not only means endless cuddles, but also an almost innate understanding of your cat’s behaviour. It is good to know that cats are crepuscular creatures, meaning they are mostly active during dusk and dawn, typically when we are at our least active. This gives them the following advantages:
• Usually helps avoid predators
• Escape the heat of the scorching daytime
• Face less competition over prey
Their sleeping patterns also tend to change with age:
• Kittens: snooze throughout majority of the day, only displaying energy between mealtimes (in the form of yipping, nibbling, and running)
• Adolescents: tend to be most unpredictable – you never know when the high energy is going to hit
• Adults: are known to sleep 12-20 hours and unlike for humans, are not judged for doing so.
Weather additionally also plays a role in their sleeping patterns. Most irregular sleeping can be blamed on weather changes. But if it persists, it is always wise to check with a vet. There are some pesky illnesses that affect sleep for cats and it is a good idea to be on the lookout for signs of the following:
• Hyperthyroidism
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Dementia
Morale of the article, just take the time to admire your furry friend’s cuteness as they snooze because it is usually normal for them to do so.

SUMMER TIPS AND TRICKS TO KEEP YOUR DOG CHILL!
With summer getting closer we need to take extra care of our pets especially in this region. The temperatures can get as high as the mid 40°C range and it is important to protect our pets from this heat. At K9 friends we ensure that all our dogs are kept cool in the summer with AC, that are generously sponsored by the community in the UAE, and we make sure to offer them lots of water. We also suspend dog walking activities in the hotter months to avoid any heat strokes for the dogs amongst many other precautions we take. If you are wondering how to keep your dogs cool this summer here are some tips you can use:
1. Easy Access to water: Keep water bowls in multiple areas of the house. If you live in a multi-story house make sure to have them on all levels.
2. Ventilation: Keep the house cool with a fan or Air conditioner and make sure that your dogs play only in shaded areas.
3. Early/Late Walks: Stick to very early in the morning between 5:308:00 AM or very late at night after
WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM 22
9:00 -10:00 PM. The ground gets too hot during the day in this region, and this can cause your dogs’ paws to burn. Imagine walking outside in summer without shoes! By 9:00 PM the ground has probably cooled off enough for a safe outdoor walk. When humidity is high, please shorten your dog’s walks, to avoid your dog heating up rapidly.
4. Attention: Never leave a dog unattended in a car, this can lead to heat stroke and death.
5. Grooming: Never shave your dog. Especially if it is a double coated breed like a Husky. A dog’s fur protects them from the cold but also shields them from sunburns. Instead get them groomed so that they are comfortable in summer.
Despite all the care we take in keeping our dogs safe and cool in the summer it is important to know the signs of an incoming heat stroke to ensure safety.
Early Stages of Heat Stroke:
• Heavy panting
• Excessive drooling
• Balance problems
• Bright red gums
Advanced Stages of Heat Stroke
• Shallow or noisy breathing
• White gums
• Lethargy
• Vomiting
If you suspect your dog may be suffering from a heat stroke, take your dog indoors immediately or to a shaded spot and then apply a cool compress with cool tap water. DO NOT use ice water as it may shock your dog’s body. Seek medical help immediately. Finally, Summer is going great and if you want to treat your dog to some cooling treats here are some great homemade options that you can make a to let your dog cool off as long as they are not on any special diets.
• Frozen banana slices: Slice up a banana and freeze it and offer your dog a piece or two as a cooling treat.
• Cold Peanut Butter Kong: Put some peanut butter (which is xylitol free) on the edge of a size appropriate Kong and chill it for 30 mins in the freezer. Let your dog play with the Kong. They are entertained and it is a fun treat
• Yogurt: Add a spoon full of cool yoghurt in your dog’s meal. This is cooling and a great probiotic.
• Watermelon: Cut up watermelon is also a fun fruit treat for your dog. So next time you have some at home share a piece with your pooch!

Success Stories From K9 Friends
Paul, Christina and family adopted Rachel 4 years after adopting Max from K9 Friends. She is his biological sister and had been the only sibling from the litter to not have been adopted for all these years. With their daughters’ eyes set on Rachel from the K9 Friends website they agreed to try walking her, then fostering her to see if she would get along with Max. It took a couple of weeks of supervision and gradual introductions but they were comfortable and playing with each other quite quickly, so the family decided to adopt her.
Here is what her family has to day about them:
“Her and Max are now best of friends, cuddling together on their rug and playing together regularly, usually when we are watching something intently on the TV they decide to play right in front of us. Rachel is like a big puppy because she is not yet familiar with the world. She is becoming more and more confident, but she is intrigued by the funniest of things, such as flashing lights for Ramadan! She is a very skippy, lively character but very gentle and loving with both us and Max.
Looking back, we only wish we had taken the decision to adopt her sooner. It is heartwarming to see brother and sister together in their forever home.”

Ryan and his partner only had to see a popular reel featuring Bruno (then Bravo) to completely fall in love with him. His electric energy and playfulness combined with his penchant for adventure made him the perfect addition to their family. Bruno was initially rescued from an unsafe construction site in an industrial area, along with his siblings in Jebel Ali. Ryan and his partner turned out to be the exact family suited for his love for an active lifestyle. Bruno has now settled into his new role nicely and as you can see, is thoroughly enjoying himself!

THE HAMSTER RETREAT: A Guide to Setting up a Cozy Hamster Habitat
Creating a cozy and fun home for your pet hamster is crucial for their wellbeing. Here’s a step-bystep guide to setting up their new home:
1. Do your research: Read up on hamsters to prepare for ownership and understand their needs.
2. Choose the right cage: Opt for a wire cage with bars spaced no more than 1.5 inches apart. Multilevel cages with ramps and shelves provide ample space for climbing and exploring.
3. Cage size matters: Select a spacious cage
that is as wide as it is tall, with multiple shelves. For a pair of hamsters, a 2’ x 2’ x 2’ cage is recommended.
4. Set up the cage: Fill it with bedding, furniture, and toys. Hammocks, hideouts, and wooden structures offer cozy spots for resting. Provide a variety of toys for mental stimulation.
5. Water and food: Attach a plastic water bottle to the cage’s exterior and use a ceramic food dish placed away from the water source.
6. Maintain cleanliness: Clean the cage, water
bottle, toys, and food dishes weekly using a bottle brush and animal-friendly wipes. Keep the environment fresh and hygienic.
7. Choose suitable bedding and food: Experiment with different bedding options to find one that suits your rat’s preferences. Select a balanced hamster food brand, considering individual sensitivities.
By following these steps, you’ll create a comfortable and enriching home for your pet hamster. Enjoy the journey of hamster ownership and cherish the bond with your furry friend.
