Madina’s and Andrews adoption story
When I was a little girl in Kazakhstan I came home with a small puppy in my arms. After arguing with my parents we decided to keep him. I’ve always loved dogs for their companionship and the joy they bring to our lives. I’m finally at a place in life where I can have my own dog and I knew I wanted to adopt. We saw that little Bertie (Peanut now) was available. The K9 Friends staff were so helpful and accommodating. The process to adopt was easy but at the same time very clear that the well-being of the dogs is their top priority. Whenever I come home from a long day at work, exhausted and ready to sleep, Peanut wagging his tail and smiling makes my heart melt. My days are brighter with this adorable little fluff ball.
1) What made you decide to adopt the first and second time?
Óscar (his K9 Friends name was Jefrey), was our first dog. We got him when we finally had the ideal conditions for it (like a decent size house with a garden). We found K9 Friends on Facebook and when we saw Oscar up for adoption, we immediately got in touch. We weren’t the first and had to wait, but eventually we went to meet him and we did not hesitate to take him home. It has been a great experience since then (9 years ago), and he’s a great dog to have as a first dog. He was 3 years old when we got him and properly trained, so very easy to have around. He’s also super smart. We had talked before about getting a second dog, but never decided to go through. Last week I was browsing Facebook and saw her up for adoption on K9 Friends page. They had just posted it. I showed it to my wife Ana and she just said, call them. I did, and we were the first one to go and meet her. She came straight to me and after that it was impossible not to bring her home. She got along quite well with Oscar too so there were no issues. She’s an energy ball which is a great contrast to Oscar who’s getting very quiet as he ages. She’s been with us for a little over a week and there have been no issues at all. She’s well trained, very lovely and fits perfectly with our family.
2) Tell us your experience with adoption of both your
Our adoption experience has been amazing. I guess we’ve been lucky. They are both great dogs, with lovely personalities, well trained and fill out home with love, joy and a lot of fur. I guess puppies are super cute, but they are also hard work to train and to have, so we would always recommend a young adult dog to anyone who wants to adopt a first dog.
As a volunteer at K9 Friends, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to keep our canine companions safe during the sweltering summer months. From the dangers of hot pavement to the benefits of cooling treats, here’s my guide to ensuring your dog enjoys a safe and happy summer.
To test the ground’s heat, place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog. Aim for early morning or late evening walks when the ground is cooler, and try to stick to grassy areas as much as possible. It’s a practice we live by at the shelter, ensuring our dogs stay comfortable and safe.
Hydration is crucial for the dogs at K9 Friends, especially during summer. We always carry fresh water and a portable bowl during walks. Additionally, cooling treats can help keep your dog’s body temperature down. Here are some suggestions:
• Ice Cubes: Simple and effective, ice cubes are a refreshing treat.
• Frozen Fruit: Blueberries, watermelon, and strawberries are great options.
• Cooling Treats: Look for pet-specific cooling treats from brands like PD that are designed to help regulate your dog’s body temperature.
We never feed our dogs right before a walk. Exercising on a full stomach can lead to gastric torsion, a potentially fatal condition also known as bloat. We allow at least an hour or two after eating before engaging in vigorous activities. This rule is as important at home as it is at the shelter.
Grooming plays a vital role in helping dogs stay cool and comfortable. At K9 Friends, we ensure our dogs are regularly brushed to remove excess fur and promote better air circulation to the skin. However, we avoid shaving their coats too short. A dog’s coat provides insulation against heat and sunburn.
Consider using shampoos and conditioners designed to keep your dog’s coat healthy and shiny during the hot months. Additionally, keep an eye out for any signs of overheating, such as excessive panting or drooling, and ensure your dog has access to shade at all times.
One of the most critical rules we stress at K9 Friends is to never leave your dog in a parked car. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can skyrocket within minutes, leading to heatstroke and death. For example, on an 85°F (29°C) day, the temperature inside a car can reach 102°F (39°C) in just 10 minutes and 120°F (49°C) within 30 minutes.
If you need to run errands, leave your dog at home in a cool, safe environment. It’s simply not worth the risk. This is something we emphasize to all our adopters and visitors.
Summer is a dangerous time for your dogs in the heat of the region, so it also requires extra precautions to keep them safe from the heat. By walking your dog during cooler times, providing plenty of water and cooling treats, maintaining proper grooming, and never leaving them in a car, you can ensure your furry friend stays healthy and happy all season long.

stanbul Airport has introduced therapy dogs to help calm passengers and create a stressfree travel experience. These trained and certified dogs, including a Lagotto Romagnolo named Kuki
and a border collie named Alita, offer comfort through snuggles and belly rubs. The therapy dogs work primarily during peak travel hours, and due to positive feedback, the airport plans to expand the program.
After 12 years missing, Artie, a grey and white cat, was reunited with Theo-Will McKenna, who lost him in his youth, in Connah’s Quay, Wales. Identified by his microchip, Artie was found in a backyard and returned home. Now 16, Artie is receiving essential medical care and adjusting to life with McKenna’s other cat.

Astudy by James Cook University has found that men who own pets show higher empathy towards animals compared to farmers and non-pet owners. The research analyzed 91 men’s responses, revealing that human-animal interactions in adulthood, particularly caring for pets without financial motives, significantly boost animal empathy. Dr. Jessica Oliva is a senior lecturer in psychology at JCU. She also stated that it was well established that women felt more animal empathy (AE) than men.

Separation anxiety is a common challenge for many dog owners, manifesting in behaviours like urinating, barking, chewing, and escaping when dogs are left alone. These actions often indicate more than just poor manners—they can be symptoms of a deeper issue known as separation anxiety.
• Urinating and Defecating: Dogs may soil the house when alone, even if they are house-trained.
• Barking and Howling: Continuous vocalisation in the absence of their guardian is typical.
• Chewing, Digging, and Destruction: Dogs often damage doors, windows, or household items, sometimes injuring themselves in the process.
• Escaping: Some dogs will attempt to escape confinement, leading to injuries and property damage.
• Pacing: Dogs might walk or trot in a fixed pattern when left alone.
• Coprophagia: In extreme cases, dogs may defecate and then consume their faeces.

Mild Cases: Counterconditioning can help by associating being alone with
positive experiences, such as receiving a puzzle toy filled with food each time you leave.
Moderate to Severe Cases: A comprehensive desensitisation and counter conditioning program is needed. This involves gradually acclimating your dog to being alone, starting with short separations that slowly increase over time. Professional guidance is recommended to design an effective plan.
• Take your dog to work if possible.
• Arrange for someone to stay with your dog.
• Use doggy daycare or a sitter’s house.
• Crate Training
• While crate training can be helpful for some dogs, it can increase anxiety in others. Monitor your dog’s behaviour to determine if crate training is suitable for them.
• Ensure at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity daily.
• Engage in interactive games like fetch and tug-of-war.
• Provide food puzzle toys and chew items.
• Enrol in training classes or dog sports.
In severe cases, anti-anxiety medications prescribed by a veterinarian can aid in managing separation anxiety, making behaviour modification more effective.
Never scold or punish your dog for anxious behaviours. These are distress responses, not acts of disobedience, and punishment can exacerbate the problem.
Addressing separation anxiety requires patience and a structured approach, often involving professional assistance. With the right strategies, you can help your dog feel more secure and alleviate their anxiety when separated from you this summer.
