4 EXPERT TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE BEST CAT FOOD With so many cat food options, it can be hard to know what food is best for your cat’s nutritional needs. To help, here is some expert advice from Champion Senior Veterinarian, Dr. Darcia Kostiuk, on choosing a healthy diet for your cat: 1.
Who should I ask about my cat’s nutritional needs? Speaking to your trusted veterinarian is essential. However, I would encourage people to start their own research from reputable websites such as veterinarian school websites, veterinary nutritionists, and animal nutritionists. I would also encourage cat owners to speak with their friends, family and pet food store associates, and to look at pet food websites. The reason why there are so many nutritional feeding philosophies is that we are all still learning about companion animal nutrition, and every cat has individual variations in their needs and preferences. Doing some nutritional research before speaking with your veterinarian and their staff is a great way to build your partnership so you can give your cat the best care possible.
2.
04
What should I look for on the ingredients panel? You should look for food with a high animal protein content. This is because your cat is an obligate carnivore, and taurine (an essential amino acid for cats) is only naturally found in animal proteins.
3.
Why are nutritional guarantees important? Nutritional guarantees let you know that the food is complete and balanced. That means that the food is formulated to meet all the essential nutrients your cat requires, and the diet can be fed as a sole source of food to them.
4.
Why should I feed according to my cat’s life stage? How does age affect nutritional needs? You should feed according to your cat’s life stages including kitten, adult, and senior /geriatric diets because there are different requirements needed by cats at different stages. For example, an aging cat needs an animal protein source that is more easily digestible because as they age, their body’s ability to digest their food and utilize it is decreased. It is also very important to support healthy aging and maintain a lean body mass. Feeding a highly digestible protein that helps support health benefits is the best way to do so.

HOW TO POTTY TRAIN YOUR PUPPY IN ONE WEEK Potty training your pup is one of the most important challenges you will face and it’s crucial to set both you and your pet up for success. To start, ensure you decide on which method of management and supervision to use until your furry friend is fully housetrained. This could be a crate, play pen, or active supervision. Note: Crate Training Never leave your puppy in a crate for longer than a couple of hours. Your pup will struggle to hold themselves for long at the beginning, if left too long they may start relieving themselves in their crate out of desperation. Keep crate time to a few hours or less and when they are out of the crate make sure they go to the toilet before putting them back inside. When you have decided on a method to keep your puppy safe in-between toilet breaks, it is important to outline a consistent schedule to help your puppy learn the right toilet habits.
Here’s our tips to try: 1
Take your puppy out every hour on the leash to a designated spot where you want your pup to “go” and wait for them.
Simple Solution Floral Fresh Stain & Odor Remover
AED 69.00
Give your puppy 5 minutes in the spot and quietly watch to see if they pee or poop. Don’t distract them whilst they sniff around the area to keep them focused. If they don’t go, lead them inside and try again in the same spot after 10 mins.
• • • •
3
After your pup relieves themselves, give them a treat and let them off leash in a safe area for fun time.
4
Repeat these steps throughout the day.
5
In addition to your hourly toilet breaks, ensure to take your puppy out to the spot at these times:
Savic Puppy Trainer Starter
AED 115.50
Savic Puppy Trainer Pad 100/pack
AED 236.25
After eating After drinking After playtime or other vigorous activities Immediately after they wake up from a nap
Tip: Clean up accidents thoroughly
Leftover odour from past whoopsies around your home is a big welcome sign to your pup to visit the site again. Make sure you clean past accidents thoroughly with a cleaner designed for pet stains, often the site may need more than one round of cleaning until the smell is eradicated. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Arthritis In Dogs - Can It Be Managed? Is your dog struggling to jump on the bed, get in and out of the car or generally go about their day? Difficulty moving could be a symptom of arthritis - a painful and common condition characterized by inflammation of the joints. While older dogs and certain breeds are more susceptible to arthritis, the condition can affect any dog - so it’s never too early or too late to start thinking about your furry friend’s joint health. Arthritis can’t be cured, but it can be managed. The right diet (one that reduces inflammation) combined with a healthy lifestyle will strengthen your dog’s joints and help them live a comfortable and happy life. Let’s explore arthritis in dogs, and how diet and lifestyle can help, below.
SIGNS OF ARTHRITIS IN DOGS Arthritis is a degenerative condition, meaning it slowly gets worse over time. Early warning signs might include: 08
WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM
• •
Limping - is your dog favoring one or more legs? Difficulty moving - are they struggling to run, walk, play or get comfortable? • Fatigue - are they sleeping more than they used to? • Irritability - are they snappy, depressed or simply not themselves? • Licking or biting - are they obsessively licking or biting patches of skin? The tricky thing with arthritis is that many of the signs above can also indicate other health problems. Because it’s a degenerative condition, it’s important to monitor your dog’s symptoms and take them to the vet for regular checkups.
SUPPORT YOUR DOG’S JOINTS THROUGH DIET Processed commercial kibbles often contain carbohydrates such as wheat, rice, soy, and potatoes, which can cause your dog’s blood sugar levels to fluctuate and increase painful swelling. Dogs struggle to digest carbohydrates, which puts unneeded stress on the digestive system and produces an inflammatory response, which can result in joint issues like arthritis.
Want to reduce your pet’s pain and support their joints? Opt for an anti-inflammatory, high-meat, biologically-appropriate diet instead! A raw diet, or raw alternative diet like ZIWI Peak, is a great place to start. These diets are highly digestible, which means your dog’s internal system can process them easily without the risk of causing an inflammatory response (like what can happen when they eat kibble). All ZIWI Peak recipes include the below antiinflammatory nutrients which are crucial for supporting joint health: •
•
•
Glucosamine and chondroitin can help alleviate pain associated with arthritis. These nutrients are abundant in New Zealand Green Mussels the only species of mussel to contain a bioactive protein that acts as anti-inflammatory and helps repair muscle and increase joint function. Omega-3 fatty acids (particularly EPA and DHA) are also found in these mussels and are widely recognized to provide anti-inflammatory properties. Our Mackerel & Lamb recipe contains the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids out of all our recipes. Calcium and phosphorus support healthy bone and joint development. Because our whole-prey recipes reflect the raw diet, we include bone in all ZIWI Peak recipes as a source of calcium and phosphorus.
It can be hard to get the balance of nutrients right when preparing your own raw diet at home, so ZIWI Peak takes the guesswork (and the hassle) out of finding and combining the right nutrients in the right quantities. The other added benefit is the additional ingredients, like New Zealand Green Mussel mentioned above, which further supports your dog’s joints.
EXERCISE AND LIFESTYLE TIPS They may not be able to run and jump like they once could, but daily exercise is still very important for dogs with arthritis. Even lowimpact movements will help to maintain muscle tone, which slows musculoskeletal weakness and prevents weight gain (and the associated pain of excess weight on joints). Here are some tips to keep in mind when exercising and relaxing with your canine companion: • Try short, regular, gentle walks on a leash or harness. Avoid long walks on asphalt or hard surfaces. • Stick to smooth, even surfaces (like grass fields) rather than uneven terrain, which will make it harder for your dog to remain stable. • Swimming reduces pressure on joints, so it’s a great exercise option. Look up dogfriendly pools or lakes in your area. • If your dog is prone to getting excited by other dogs, keep them on a leash. Excitement can temporarily numb pain, but if your dog has a vigorous play session with a friend they’ll likely feel very sore later! • Make your dog comfortable at home by ensuring they have a well-padded bed in a warm, dry location. • To stop your dog jumping or slipping over, try to minimize slippery surfaces and provide ramps where necessary. Small adjustments to your furry friend’s diet, exercise regime, and home life can make a big difference when it comes to managing arthritis. If your dog is in chronic pain, your vet will be able to provide recommendations for living a more comfortable life.

NUTRITION Q&A
Supreme Selective Rabbit AED 60.00
Small pets such as hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits are amongst some of the most popular pets in households today. However, despite being grouped together based on size, they all have different nutritional needs to consider. What would be suitable for one may be completely wrong for the other and could cause health problems down the line if continued feeding. We answer some questions below to help you navigate the dos and don’ts of feeding your small pet.
Can I feed my guinea pig and rabbit with the same pellets?
Supreme Timothy Hay AED 28.50
As much as the two Herbivores have similarities, feeding guinea pigs on rabbit food is not advisable. Whilst both diets include grass or fresh hay, which is important for to maintain a healthy digestive system, they also need a selection fruits and veg based on their nutritional requirements. Guinea pigs need sufficient amounts of vitamin C which is not typically supported in the advised amount through rabbit pallets.
Selective Naturals Meadow Loops for Rabbits
How much and often should I be feeding my hamster? Hamsters are known to carry food equivalent of their own body weight in their cheeks, so it’s important to understand portion control to ensure you are not overfeeding your furry pal. As a rule of thumb, your hamster should be fed 1-2 tablespoons of food every 24hours.
How can my rabbits diet help manage overgrown teeth? Most overgrown tooth problems are preventable simply by feeding them the right diet. Your rabbit needs a constant supply of fresh hay or grass to nibble on. Not only is the supply good for maintaining manageable teeth, but essential for digestive health too.
AED 10.40
Tiny Friends Farm Hazel Hamster 2lb. AED 23.25
Supreme Selective Guinea Pig AED 60.50
How do I know if my guinea pig is overweight? It can be difficult to recognise if your guinea pig is overweight, as the weight gain occurs gradually and is deposited in a number of locations. Talk to your vet to understand the standard weight your guinea pig should be aiming to maintain and ensure to weigh them regularly to keep track.

Introducing A New Cat Into Your Household Here’s what you need to do
Have you recently been thinking about adding another feline friend to your family? If you already have a household cat and are planning to welcome another one, it’s important you take all the right steps to introduce them the right way. After all, most cats are territorial, especially if they have not been socialised from a very young age. So how do you introduce cats? Here’s a simple breakdown that can help you start the beginning of a new feline friendship.
12

Keep them separated at first. Set up a separate enclosed space for your new cat with essentials like food, water, litter box and toys. Make sure the space is not accessible by your old cat to avoid any accidental encounters. Exchange scents. After a day or two of keeping the cats separated, start by gradually introducing the scent of the new cat. Allow them to sniff your hands and clothing when you interact with them, so they get used to each other’s scents. You could also try to rub a towel or cloth on your new cat then place it next to the other to explore scents. Explore each other’s space. Let them switch and explore each other’s spaces for a few hours during the day. Monitor each cat closely as they move around the other cat’s territory. If you see or hear either cat show signs of stress, go back to the previous step.
4
Encourage interaction through the door. Place your new cat’s food bowl close to the door on his side. Your existing cat will smell and hear him through the door. Give your existing cat treats near the door of the new cat’s room so he associates it with good things.
5 6
Time for visual contact. If the above steps have been successful, it’s time to let the cats see each other. Open the door slightly so the cats can see each other but cannot stick their heads out. If you hear them hissing or growling, distract them with a string toy. Let them out together. Once the cats are comfortable seeing each other through a door or barrier, let them interact in person for 5-10 minutes under your supervision. You can try this step 3-5 times each day. Never force the cats together just try to observe passively.
After successfully completing the above steps if you haven’t noticed any signs of fear or aggression, you can start leaving the cats alone for short periods of time. Use a camera to monitor their behaviour in your absence. If either cat has displayed any sort of stressed or aggressive behaviour, it’s best to keep them separate when you are not around. On the other hand, if they appear to be getting along, gradually increase the amount of time they can spend alone.

NUTRITION GUIDE FOR SMALL BREED DOGS & PUPPIES All dogs have the same physiology and their bodies are meant to consume protein-rich, primarily meat-based diets. However, small breed dogs and puppies do have additional requirements to support their specific needs that large breed dogs simply don’t.
Why do small breed dogs and puppies require different nutrition? Small dogs generally have a higher metabolic rate than large dogs, meaning they use up the energy that food provides much quicker. This is why a dog food diet high in fat and protein is appropriate for a small breed, but not for a large breed that would require more time to burn through those calories. Smaller dogs, proportionally, have a shorter large intestinal tract than large dogs do, so their food should be crafted to be higher in protein and calories because they get a reduced chance to digest and utilize nutrients. Small breed dogs, especially mini or toy breeds, also have smaller mouths, which can make typical dry kibble difficult to crunch into smaller bite-sized pieces before swallowing—remember, dogs don’t “chew” their food the same way humans do. Kibble that is sized appropriately for small breeds
14
WWW.PETSDELIGHT.COM
is an important factor to take into consideration when selecting a food for a small dog. Puppies, like small breed dogs, thrive on a diet that’s high in fat and protein to support the huge growth they experience in their first year of life. Large breed puppies specifically require a diet that contains an appropriate amount of minerals, like calcium and phosphorus, that will promote a slow and steady growth. In contrast, small breed puppies mature faster and they also have a lower bone mineral density compared to larger dogs so they need a different calcium phosphorus ratio than a large breed puppy.
What to look for in small breed and puppy diets? Pay close attention to the ingredients listed on the ingredient panel of the dog food you are considering. The first few ingredients are what makes up much of the food, so look for dog food where animal ingredients are listed first. ACANA® pet foods always feature premium animal sources in at least the first two ingredients of every bag. Also pay attention to the protein content of your dog’s food. Some pet foods claim to be high-protein, but it’s
the quality of the protein that really matters, so make sure the food is high in animal-derived protein, which is the most appropriate type for dogs. Lastly, look for signs on the packaging that the food is formulated for the life stage or size of the dog. Formulas specifically aimed at puppies, like ACANA® Wholesome Grains Puppy Recipe or ACANA® Puppy & Junior will typically feature a higher fat content to support appropriate and healthy growth, and small breed formulas like ACANA® Wholesome Grains Small Breed Recipe will usually have the added benefit of a smaller kibble size. By following these tips and feeding a complete and balanced diet according to their life stage and size, you’re supporting a long, happy and healthy life for your small breed dog or puppy.
PET STORIES
LEILA AND REX’S
STORY Leila: I was first brought home by
my family on the 18th of January 2020. I never liked being home especially when two of my hoomans went to school, so I used to try and go out on walks by myself but my hooman parents always stopped me before I could. Over time I got used to staying home for most of the day until my hooman siblings came back, and when they did we would go on long journeys to see the roads. I especially loved the weekends when my hooman siblings were at home all day with me to play. I remember when I first moved to the new house, every smell was new to me. We had dog neighbours and a big park for me to play in with my friends. Life started calming down until Rex came, he was much smaller than me
and a boy. Rex was scared of most things when he arrived, which I can relate to, so I gave him time to settle in. He began to get used to his new life and I helped to show him how much better it is here at our new home. I had to get used to sharing attention, my bed and most importantly my toys. But in the end, it was the best thing for me and my hooman family to adopt another friend.
Adopted from me lots about it so I was very excited. At first I got scared seeing so many new dogs but then I began to feel more comfortable and started to make new friends. I am still a bit scared when I see a new hooman but my sister and my hooman family are helping me gain my confidence, and I am really enjoying my new home.
Rex:
When I first came home, everything was very scary. There were these people who I never met before, a big garden for me to play in and a big sister. My sister was a little shy at first but she eventually accepted me into the house, she gets a little jealous when our hoomans pet me but she is getting used to sharing. I remember the first time we went to the park, Leila had told

Does Your Cat Bite? Here’s How to Teach Them To Play Nice
L
As most cat owners will know, cats are strong-willed animals which can make them very difficult to train, but not impossible. With a little patience and the right tools, you could be saving your hands from a few nasty nips! •
Teach Them Early Biting tends to start from kittenhood so if your cat is still young, it’s good to start the process early to avoid developing concerns down the line. Try daily playtime with your kitten and when it turns into to a biting frenzy, redirect them to a scratch post or a toy instead.
•
Provide Interactive Toys It’s important to offer your cat a range of playful and interactive toys to keep them stimulated and to play bite when their urge kicks in. By having a nice variety of toys around the house, it will encourage your cat to release any tension on that and not you.
•
Take Time Out It’s fine to let them play bite their toys, but as soon as they take it to your hand stop playing with them, try to stay still and ignore them for 5 minuets. Don’t move away from your spot, stand your ground until you become boring to them. The trick here is to show them that the fun stops when they bite your hand.
•
Visit Your Vet If all else fails and your furry friend is still taking a liking to your hands, talk to your vet to see if they have any other methods they can suggest to try. It’s always best to speak to a professional before it can become more of a serious problem in your household.
et’s face it, cat bites hurt. But what does it mean when your cat bites you out of the blue, after they were enjoying a relaxing stroke from you?
Cats will bite their humans for a few reasons but mostly it can be related to aggression, according to research. Most of the time it’s down to your cat not really enjoying physical contact, whilst other felines bite to keep people away from them when resting, sleeping or eating. Adult cats may bite if they were not desensitised from being handled as kittens. Early exposure to people is important with a kitten and can help to avoid aggressive behaviour when humans approach them later in their lives. And lastly, play and predatory behaviour such as stalking, pouncing, chasing and play fighting could be other factors into why cats bite. If the kitten has learnt that it’s ok to bite hands through such behavioural acts, then they will likely continue this into adulthood.

Hydrotherapy at Dogwalk:
H
What Is It and What Are The Benefits?
ydrotherapy is the use of water to relieve discomfort and promote physical well-being. It is a nonimpact method of movement and exercise, and at Dogwalk we cater mainly to small animals such as dogs and cats.
Swimming is also a great form of exercise for weight loss, and when sessions are targeted they have great effects on the health and general well-being of dogs and cats.
Hydrotherapy is often advised by veterinarians in the region as a follow up programme after surgery or injury. It helps get recovering dogs back to normal function quickly and safely. When dogs aren’t moving, they lose muscles quickly and rebuilding them takes a very long time. Hydrotherapy is a good starting point for exercise on recovering dogs. As mentioned, it is a nonweight bearing exercise that helps mobilize the joints and maintain their muscle mass during their recovery period.
“I started Hydrotherapy with Buddy, my now 9-year-old Pug, at Dogwalk becasue Buddy was diagnosed with some serious health issues at age 4.
Hydrotherapy programmes are tailored to suit each individual case and an assessment alongside veterinary history reports are used to create the best plan to help that pet in their recovery. A series of different exercises are used in the pool to target each specific ailment and promote the most effective recovery process. In certain cases, Hydrotherapy is implemented as a long-term recovery maintenance plan. In other cases the dog or cat will quickly reach a goal point in their sessions so that they are then able to function normally, without pain or problems in their day-today life.
Success story
He had really slowed down, and his back legs were dragging. His inability to walk was extremely sad to experience for all of us around him. When we got news of Dogwalk and their Hydrotherapy programme this absolutely changed Buddy’s quality of life. After just a few short months he was walking better with less dragging and much more energy. He has been swimming weekly with the Hydrotherapist, Nico (who he absolutely adores), and his ability to swim more and walk more has just kept growing since. Thank you Dogwalk! You have extended Buddy’s quality of life and I’m so grateful to have my happy-go-lucky pooch back.” Melinda Leach, Dubai
