How To House Rabbits Indoors

Did you know that housing a rabbit is shown to have many benefits, not just for your pet, but for you too?

By keeping your rabbit indoors, it protects them not only from potential predator harm, but also keeps them out of the harsh summer weather conditions we have in the UAE. Housing your rabbit indoors may help to identify any illnesses or injuries they may have, as you will be able to quickly identify changes in their behaviour or appearance.

If you are open to housing your bunny in your home, then read on to find out what you need to make them happy and healthy.

Access to Hay

As most rabbit owners will know, access to hay is an essential to support their digestive system and keep their teeth trim. Not only should hay be easily accessible, but ensure a nice supply of fresh veggies and water are available to keep them healthy throughout the day.

A Potty Place

Believe it or not, your house rabbit can be trained to use a litter box. One thing to note is that not all litter is safe for your rabbit and can make them sick, so be aware of the type you are using.

Litter brands that are specified for small pet or paper based litters are much safer options to consider when deciding.

Rabbits tend to go to the toilet in the corner of pens or rooms, so be sure to set up their potty place in the corner of your pen or room.

Exercise and Entertainment

Just like any other pet, bunnies can get bored if left without varieties of exercise and enrichment options.

To avoid possible destructive chewing, digging and potential health issues, try keeping them safe within a playpen that is equipped with plenty of rabbit toys to keep them active.

With some preparation, both you and your rabbit can cohabit your home comfortably.

Canine Distemper Rise In The UAE:

Here’s What You Need To Know

The term ‘distemper’ might puzzle you as it is a fairly new discovery here in the UAE. This deadly disease is slowly rising between dogs in the community and is now becoming a cause for concern. Although many dog’s are vaccinated against it, many local vet clinics suspect a new strain spreading amongst canines. Let’s learn more about this disease below.

What is Distemper?

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, Distemper is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus that attacks a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems.

The virus can also be found in wildlife such as foxes, wolves, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, mink and ferrets and has been reported in lions, tigers, leopards and other wild cats as well as seals.

What are the symptoms?

After being infected, most dogs might develop a fever approximately 3-to-6 days later, however the initial symptoms depend on the severity of the case and how the canine’s body reacts to it. Most general symptoms in the first stage are:

Fever

How does it spread?

Distemper can spread through direct contact with an infected dog from exchange of saliva while using the same food/water bowls

through exposure of

What precautionary measures can be taken?

As there could be a potentially new strain of this disease in the UAE, it would be best to not socialize your dog in open dog-friendly areas. Members of the renowned Facebook group ‘Dogs in Dubai’ are urging pet parents to get their dog’s ‘VacciCheck’ which is a simple blood test carried out by many vet clinics in the region. VacciCheck helps determine if your dog still remains protected against core diseases like Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus or if he still requires necessary booster shots.

Some of the UAE Veterinary clinics that provide VacciCheck:

1. The Veterinary Hospital, Dubai

2. The Modern Veterinary Clinic, Dubai (Open 24/7)

3. SaBB Veterinary Clinic and Laboratory, Dubai

4. DKC Veterinary Clinic, Dubai

For more information about VacciCheck rates and test results, kindly contact one of the above vet clinics or get in touch with your pet’s vet to check availability. In an unfortunate scenario where your dog may carry any of the above mentioned symptoms, contact your Vet to take immediate action and to get professional medical help for your Dog.

Success Stories From K9 Friends

I was a volunteer at K9 Friends many years back and remember my time there fondly. We adopted two dogs Oreo, (a golden retriever who has since sadly passed away due to a brain tumor) and Twinkle - a little tiny puppy with a cleft palate that I bottle fed. Roxy, who is still at K9, is Twinkle’s sister. Twinkle is doing great, eats and drinks on her own and loves life! We are now in Singapore and after being asked 1000 times “what is she?”, we decided to do a DNA test on Twinkle. The DNA test revealed 19 different breeds and listed fellow dog relatives all over the world who have done the same test. She truly is a Dubai Special.

Myrtle was found at 2 weeks old with mummy Hattie and seven siblings in an unsafe area and brought to K9 Friends by a kind lady. Myrtle was a part of the special Lovin Dubai interview with K9 Friends in July 2022. Soon after, a loving family has adopted little shy Myrtle and helping her grow in confidence

Sandy arrived with her siblings after being found in an industrial area. She is a clever girl and loves to play. In July 2022, Sandy was lucky to be a part of the Dubai Festival Plaza Pet Adoption Open Day where she met her forever parents for the first time. Liam and his partner Ellie, fell in love with Sandy instantly and visited her every weekend at the event site. One week after, the couple reached out to the K9 Friends Shelter to adopt Sandy and take her home with them. Sandy now lives with her lovely parents and is enjoying her new home.

WHAT IS PRIMORDIAL POUCH AND WHY DO CATS HAVE IT?

Cats begin to develop stomach pouches in kittenhood from around 6 months old and it is something all cats have – including lions and tigers! Although it is very common, many pet owners are unfamiliar with the correct term and whether it suggests weight concerns.

The correct term for the pouch on your cat is Primordial Pouch and it typically runs the length of their underside. According to veterinary professionals, the Primordial Pouch is a mix of fat, skin and fur.

Why Do Cats Have It?

Whilst it’s not entirely clear why cats have the pouches, some veterinarians do have theories:

Fat reserve

One theory is that the pouch is a source of energy, storing fat that can be used later if reliable meals are unavailable.

Protection

Another speculation is that it can provide protection to the cat’s internal abdominal organs.

Flexibility

It could also be that the pouch provides extra flexibility when running. It could enable the cat to cover more ground on each stride, and helping the cat to move from side to side more quickly when escaping predators or chasing prey.

Does It Mean My Cat Is Overweight?

The size of your cats Primordial Pouch is largely linked to genetics and will vary with every breed.

However, according to professionals there are factors that can influence the size of your cat’s pouch and these are:

• Genes and Breed

• Weight: How your cat distributes weight can affect how the pouch appears.

• Age: With age your cats skin loses elasticity, this could potentially make their pouch hang lower.

Signs to look for:

Signs of an Overweight Cat

• Round-shaped belly

• “Extra padding” (aka fat deposits) over the ribs

Signs of a Healthy-Weight Cat

• A visible waist indentation when viewed from above“Extra padding” (aka fat deposits) over the ribs

• A primordial pouch that swings when they walk

SOLVING CAT LITTER BOX PROBLEMS

Reasons why your cat won’t use the litter box

An unclean litter box

Too few litter boxes for the cats in the household

A cramped litter box

A litter box with a hood or liner

A litter box with sides that are high

Too much litter in the box

An uncomfortable location that doesn’t allow for privacy

A change in the kind of litter your use

Stressors like moving, adding new animals or family members

A conflict with another cat in the

What to do:

If your veterinarian has ruled out a health problem, you can try the following:

Scoop and change your cat’s litter at least once a day.

Thoroughly rinse out the box with baking soda or unscented soap once a week.

Use less litter. Cats like a shallow bed of litter - no more than two inches deep.

Use a larger litter box.

Use clumping, unscented litter of a medium to fine texture or the litter she used as a kitten. You could try putting a few clean boxes side by side, each with a different type of litter, to see which one your cat prefers.

Don’t use box liners or lids. Move the litter box to a quiet, low-light location where your cat is able to see anyone approaching and can escape quickly. The litter box should be out of sight of her food and water dishes.

Add a few litter boxes in different locations, all of which have multiple escape routes. Make sure that children or other animals don’t have access to the boxes.

Surface or location preference and litter box problems

If your cat is eliminating on another surface or location, make that area less appealing by:

• Adding bright lights or motion sensors to the area

• Placing tin foil, or double-sided sticky tape on the preferred surface to repel your cat.

What not to do

Do not rub her nose in urine or feces. Do not scold her and carry or drag her to the litter box.

Do not confine her to a small room with the litter box, without first trying other methods for resolving her elimination problem.

Clean up accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser rather than an ammonia-based cleanser. Then, cover the area with foil or plastic sheeting and block it off for a few weeks to give the neutralizer time to work.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A DOG IN HEAT

When do female dogs go into heat?

Some dogs can go into heat from as young as 6-8 months. Heat cycles vary depending on the dog’s age, breed and size. Small dog breeds can cycle every 3-4 months, medium and large breeds typically cycle every 6 months. Giant breeds may only cycle every 6-12 months. Bleeding can typically last around 7 days.

Signs of a dog in heat

There are often behavioral hints and physical symptoms of a dog in heat, which can include:

• Swollen vulva and bloody vaginal discharge

• Increased moodiness, growling at humans or picking fights with other dogs in the household, especially other unspayed female dogs

• Decreased or increased interest in human interactions

• Increased interest in roaming or getting out of the yard (to look for male dogs to mate with)

How to prepare for a dog in heat

• If you have an unspayed female dog who is experiencing cycles, then you must prepare ahead of time to prevent unwanted pregnancies, messes, escapes or aggression.

• Track on your phone by recording the day your dog’s heat cycle started, and then set a reminder for 6 months in the future with a 1-week alert ahead of time so you know it is coming.

• Stock up on dog diapers or washable dog pants.

• For dogs that have a hard time around other animals, particularly during this phase, try using a calming collar and/or sprays or diffusers for the house to help combat any grouchy encounters.

• If you live in a household with other animals, make sure to allocate her own food bowl, water bowl and bedding in her space.

• If you plan to spay your dog, wait until one month after her heat cycle ends.

If you have a female dog that hasn’t been spayed (the operation to remove reproductive organs), then she will go into ovulation which is referred to as “in heat”, where dogs can become pregnant. If you plan to avoid becoming a grandpawrent anytime soon, read on to find out how you can spot the signs and prepare during her cycle.

What To Do When Your Pet Passes Away in Dubai

The loss of a pet is never easy, they are family after all. It is only natural that you would want to know what the appropriate next steps are when your pet passes away, to ensure they are laid to rest humanly and legally.

We take a look into what your options to consider are when the time comes:

What are my choices when my pet dies?

Burial of your pet in the UAE is strictly not permitted, especially on rented accommodation and public areas. So with burial not being an option, this leaves you with cremation or disposal by your vet.

Where can I get my pet cremated in Dubai?

The Central Veterinary Research Laboratory offers pet cremation options for a variety of pets. Owners can opt for ashes returned in special urns or without ashes, and the cost of the service will depend on the size of your pet.

Can I ask my vet to organize this for me? Yes, your vet can provide you with options and are authorized to proceed on your behalf, however, depending on your vet they may request you to bring your pets remains to the clinic to proceed. Other vets may have a collection service available.

BUSTED! 10 CAT MYTHS,

We know there’s a lot out there that can be overwhelming and can often lead to a misconception about your feline friend. These Top 10 myths are often accepted as facts. Truth is, taking them as a fact can possibly endanger your cat’s life.

1You can’t train a cat. When we think of agility or tricks, cats aren’t really the first ones we would think of, but guess what, they can be trained! Training your kitty the right way can eventually strengthen the bond between you both.

It’s okay for my cat to eat leftovers. Most parents don’t mind their cats jumping on the kitchen counter and chowing down on any leftover scraps from dinner. Eating leftovers or scrap can not only encourage bad behaviour and turn into a habit but it can potentially, be harmful too. It can also cause diarrhea, as cats don’t cope well with sudden diet changes as well as the seasoning and spices we add to our food.

They can eat a little Chocolate. Just like canines, even a small amount of chocolate can be lethal for cats. It contains high levels of theobromine, which is toxic to both cats and dogs. Most cats won’t eat it themselves, but some owners may think they’re giving their Cat’s a treat. If not monitored it can lead to serious health conditions.

They hate water. Well most cats do hate water when they’re forced into it, especially when it’s time for a bath. Truth is, many cats are actually captivated by water. They love to investigate it first, but will certainly not enjoy submerging themselves into it.

My Cat doesn’t really need to exercise. Cats, especially those who live indoors, need daily exercise. You can engage your kitty in play with interactive toys, or by training her to walk on a harness and leash. This will also help keep your cat at healthy weight range.

They always land on their feet. You may be astonished by your cat’s talent to superficially land on his feet every time he falls. Some cats do have an incredible talent to transform their position during a fall so they can land on their feet on the ground first. It’s their tail that supports them to do this, but there are always chances that a cat can miss and actually fall to the ground, especially if they’re falling from a great height or if they’ve been pushed all of a sudden.

Milk is a great treat for your cat. We might think a bowl of milk cannot do any harm to a cat. While kittens gain nourishment from their mother’s milk, the milk of other species is difficult for them to digest. Most cats are actually lactose intolerant as they don’t have the enzyme (lactase) in their intestines to digest these enzymes causing stomach ache, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal issues.

Cats only purr and wag their tail when they’re happy. It is quite a challenge to understand cats at times. Usually, a cat will wag their tail if they want to communicate with its owner. Just like us humans, they also try to communicate through different body language and vocals. As you spend more time with your kitty, you should eventually learn to understand what your cat is trying to express or if he is in pain.

Cats are Independent and great if you aren’t home often. Although most cats are quite independent, they do need constant care and companionship. Leaving them home alone for long periods can affect their emotional or physical health. If you have to be out for long, we recommend using a cat sitter or someone that can come and comfort your kitty in your absence.

Cats that stay Indoor will not get any diseases. Another myth, that most parents fall into, is that, if their cat spends all day and night at home she won’t fall sick or be prone to diseases. In reality, cats can contract sickness, even if they don’t go outdoors. Studies show that indoor cats are unprotected from germs that travel through the air or stick to their owner’s clothing, footwear, etc. You might also have a Dog who mostly goes outdoors, from where germs can make their way indoors. It’s best to make sure your house is disinfected at all times to ensure your cat doesn’t catch any illness. themselves into it.
