What's the solution for French Bulldogs rashes?

What food to add or remove for a Maltese puppy who has tearstains?

Question from@delhikahero23 on Instagram

Question from tofinotack on Instagram

Answer:

Answer:

Some breeds seem to be more susceptible to both food and environmental allergies, like bulldogs.

Changing your dog’s food is a good idea to help treat tearstains, which a lot of pet parents don’t know. Dog foods that contain corn have an impact on the bacteria found in your dog’s saliva and tear ducts, which causes the tearstains. The bacteria spreads easily, so if your dog wipes his eyes or mouth and then touches somewhere else on his body, the bacteria is distributed. The FishDogs White Fish recipes don’t contain corn, and have been proven to help reduce tearstains, so it would be a good idea to give this food a try.

Learning to recognize the signs of an allergic reaction will help your Frenchie enjoy a healthy life. Food allergies In order to determine if your Frenchie is allergic to a specific food, try an elimination diet. Remove any potential food allergens from your dogs diet for 7-10 days and see if the symptoms subside. If they do, slowly add items back into their diet until you find the culprit. It might be the meat that your pup is eating, for example, so if he’s on a chicken based food try switching him to lamb or fish and see if you notice any change. If that doesn’t work, and symptoms are escalating, your pup may require a physical examination that includes blood and urine tests. Or, it might be an environmental allergy. Environmental allergies Dogs can also be affected by environmental allergies much like humans. Topical ointments prescribed, or over-the-counter, will help heal the scabs or open wounds on your dog’s skin caused by irritation, as well as reducing the irritation itself. Your vet might also prescribe other medication, so it’s best to check with them.

I have a Shihtzu and want to know how often we can give wet food?

My Maltese doesn't socialize and always panics from noises?

Question from @talesbycoco on Instagram

Question from @abood_dxbfitness on Instagram

Answer:

Answer:

Benefits of wet dog food

What Causes an Anxious Dog?

Many dogs prefer wet food as it tends to be more flavourful and resembles meat and meat by products more than dry alternatives. Wet dog foods contain significantly higher moisture content than dry kibbles, which can be important for dogs with urinary tract conditions, or dogs that don't tend to drink enough water on their own. You can feed wet dog food everyday if you wish, or just as an occasional treat – just make sure you look for a Complete recipe to ensure your dog gets the right nutrition.

Dogs can become nervous or anxious for many reasons. Sometimes it’s obvious what is causing your dog’s reaction, but sometimes it’s not. In that case, you can often detect what is triggering their abnormal behaviour through trial and error or by paying close attention to when their body language is indicating that they are nervous.

4 My dog sometimes goes days without eating - is there something wrong? Question from @charlotteg1bbs on Instagram

Dogs can become anxious for different reasons. Three specific types of anxiety are separation anxiety, former rescue (or shelter) dog anxiety, and illness-induced anxiety. A dog can also have general anxiety. Dog breeds prone to general anxiety include:

German & Australian Shepherd

Labrador Retriever

Vizsla

Border Collie

Havanese

Shorthair Pointer

Cocker Spaniel

Bichon Frise

King Charles Spaniel

Greyhounds

Many toy breeds

Answer: A temporary loss of appetite in your dog is not something to become immediately concerned about. Just like us, dogs are sometimes not hungry or else some stress in their day has caused them to lose interest in food. However, a more prolonged loss of appetite in your dog is a serious sign that something is wrong. It’s unusual for a dog to refuse more than one or two meals and this can indicate anything from depression to disease. Sometimes a stressful situation or an upset stomach can be to blame, but these things are often resolved within a day. If more than 48 hours go by with your dog still refusing to eat, take them to the vet immediately. Here are some tips to encourage your pet to eat: 1. Warm the food up. 2. Offer strong smelling foods. 3. Try different brands of pet food. 4. Try hand feeding. 5. Check if your dog's nose is clean (the smell of food may help stimulate their appetite)

Try your best to develop a consistent schedule and creating a predictable environment to help your dog if he is generally anxious.

I would love to talk to you about your pet’s nutrition! Please drop me an email on nutrition@petsdelight.com or direct message us on social media @PetsDelight with your questions. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Why did we choose to get our fish from Norway? Not only are the waters of Norway clean and clear, but they're well regulated and controlled with sustainability in mind. Antibiotics and growth hormones to promote growth in fish are banned in Norway, which adds to the countries great practices and stands by its ethics.

Why farmed fish? Although there is some controversy over the merits of fish farming, not all fish farming is the same and in Norway they have some of the best practices in the world. The Norwegian government controls the industry and the result of this is small scale fisheries that are required to test, monitor, and clean up after themselves. This system works wonderfully. Fish farming has a lower environmental impact than animal farming, fish requires 2.9kg of Co2 per kg of edible food, compared to 5.9kg for pork and 30kg for beef.

UNDERSTANDING ECO TERMINOLOGY Sustainable and sustainability are different There are a lot of views on what sustainability is and how it can be achieved, but essentially the word sustainability can be defined as the ability to maintain a healthy environment, social and economic systems indefinitely, on a local and global scale. But, the words sustainable and sustainability have slightly different meanings and can’t be interchanged. Sustainable products are those that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits while minimizing the impact on the earth.

What are the differences between eco-friendly and green? These terms have similar meanings, but green tends to be used to explain anything that benefits the environment, and ecofriendly or environmentally friendly is not as broad, and essentially means something that doesn’t harm the planet.

How about natural vs organic? Products labeled as natural contain ingredients that derive from nature and aren’t created by humans. Organic products include ingredients from farming practices that aim to avoid using artificial fertilizers or synthetic chemicals, like pesticides or herbicides. These products don’t use genetically modified crops, growth promoters, or hormones.

Are degradable and biodegradable really that different? It’s common for people to use these terms interchangeably, but they don’t actually have the same meaning. Degradable products and plastics don’t need living organisms as part of their breakdown process, chemical additives are instead used in the plastic that allow the item to break down quicker than it would alone.

Sometimes degradable materials can be bad for the natural environment though, as they disintegrate they break up into smaller and smaller pieces called micro plastics. Biodegradable plastic, on the other hand, is made from plant-based materials such as corn and wheat starch rather than petroleum – but they do require specific conditions in order to breakdown. For example, temperatures need to reach over 50 degrees Celsius and the plastic should be exposed to UV light. It can be a challenge to try and get your head around these different eco terms. Understanding the differences is important, but remember any product that is doing something to help, or not to harm, the environment is a step in the right direction.

PETS AND FIREWORKS A

s we approach the start of "fireworks" season for Dubai, we must remember how frightening they are for our dogs, cats, horses, and even rabbits. In fact most animals find them terrifying! They are loud to us, but even louder to a pet's sensitive hearing. They are exceptionally bright, and they go off at totally random intervals, sometimes for minutes at a time. They are unpredictable. The first thing to address is safety. Avoid walking your dog after dark, when the risk of fireworks going off is much higher, although there are some people who insist 12

on letting them off during the day too. If you absolutely cannot avoid taking your dog out, make sure they are in a secure harness or collar that they cannot escape from if they panic, even if they are going in the garden. Keep cats indoors after dark. Be sure to lock gates, doors, windows and cat flaps. Dogs and cats should be wearing a collar with their municipality tag and an identity tag featuring your address and contact number, in case they should get lost. Also make sure their microchip number is registered with your vet and municipality.

The next step is to try and make your pet as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Close the curtains, turn on the lights and turn the television up loud. Classical music is especially calming. Offer a den type space for them, something covered. This could be a crate with the door open and a blanket over the top, if they are used to it. Or it could be a coffee table, or even a bed. If they want to hide, let them. Be prepared with some feeding toys and tasty chews. A couple of frozen, well stuffed Kongs are always helpful. Licking and chewing is soothing and relaxing for your dog.

Photo credit: Tara Hamilton Do not, under any circumstances, take your pet out to see the fireworks in an attempt to introduce them to fireworks, or to make them "face their fears" if they are already afraid.

will enable your pet to become more comfortable and relaxed with fireworks. If your pet is new and you're unsure as to how they'll react, follow the advice above to help your pet cope as much as possible.

If you know your pet has a phobia of fireworks, don't wait until fireworks season is here. Use the time leading up to it, to work with a force free qualified behaviourist to help you through a programme that

Try as much as is possible, to not leave your pet home alone when there are fireworks happening. Do consider using a pet sitter to keep them company or sending them to a trusted boarding facility if you cannot be at home with your pet. One final thing to note, that comes up again and again, is the statement that you should not comfort your scared pet, to ignore them instead, that you will "reward the fear" if you do. This is at best rubbish and at worst rather cruel advice. Providing your pet with cuddles if he wishes, a calming voice and soothing words will definitely help. If you have any questions about your pet and fireworks, or you would like some help with an existing phobia, please do reach out to Pawfect Behaviour.

DODO’S STORY

D

odo is a 2 year old adopted Persian/ Himalayan cat. The story of Dodo starts when we found her through a Facebook post. As soon as we stared at the picture we knew it’s the right decision to make Dodo our cat and provide her a forever home, we knew that Dodo is one of a kind and we had this really great feeling knowing we can be Dodo’s perfect family. So we messaged the owner and it went from there. Dodo’s previous owner didn’t make Dodo go through a hard time when she was with them, in fact Dodo really enjoyed it there.

Dodo’s previous owner couldn’t keep Dodo for some reason, so she decided to give it to us. The feeling was unbelievably great and can’t be described when we saw Dodo with our eyes, we didn’t feel guilty at all to have her in our life. And we’re really grateful to bring Dodo into our family for the first time and forever. Dodo is a cat who embraces her love easily to her owner and really understands what’s going on around her. To be honest she is always there for us and knows how to bright up our day with her sound coming from across the living room and just rolling on our bed at 5:00 am whilst we’re sleeping. Dodo has so many great features and she’s not just a regular cat to our family, she’s everything that a person needs to be in a pet. Dodo was really shy and anxious at first meeting us and being in a whole new environment , but we tried our best to make her feel just like how she felt in her previous home. And now it’s almost 2 years since we have Dodo with us and our days moves on fast when we spend our time with her.

W

WHERE TO EAT IN DUBAI WITH YOUR PUP

e’re half way through the summer and it looks like I’m getting more used to it every year. I honestly don’t know if that is even possible but it does look like it. Or maybe it just has to do with the fact that there are more and more indoor dog friendly places nowadays. I really am happy to see this development and I can only hope that more places will follow.

I also like the fact that they’re having experimental dining sessions called: Waste Not, where they minimize waste production by repurposing food scraps. All in all, a really nice place to explore with your pooch.

One of our latest discoveries is; Lowe. Lowe is a contemporary dining experience in the new KOA Canvas community. We visited them a few weeks ago and have been regular customers ever since. They have a beautiful open kitchen that really is a delight to the eye. They work with unique flavours on their menus and on top of all of that, they really do love dogs. Everybody in the team is so friendly and my dog Boefje is always getting spoiled with cuddles. They really do have a very welcoming environment and the fact that they’re allowing dogs inside is just more than amazing. But I’m also very much looking forward to spending time there with my dog in the winter. They have big plans to upgrade their terrace with al fresco seating for owners and their dogs. 18

OUR UNSUNG HERO STUART

For our Unsung Heroes feature we speak to amazing people in the pet community in the UAE who are doing what they can to help keep the stray challenges in the region under control. We thank all of our Unsung Heroes for everything that they do for pets in need. To nominate your unsung hero please email us at info@petsdelight.com What made you consider fostering? We've always wanted lots of dogs just sadly with being here it's not always fair on the dogs with the limited space we have so our next thought was to foster and help out the shelters where we can. 20

At the moment we have Spike, a Belgian Malinois, who was a member of the UAE K-9 unit and we just knew from the first time we met him he needed a helping hand and time to learn how to be a dog again.

Why did you choose Spike? We both love larger dogs and when we first met Spike we knew there was something in him that was just looking for a loving home and knew that he needed someone to play with. The first 2 weeks we could see that Spike was a really timid dog and would sit in the corners of the room doing his best to stay out of the way, then one day something clicked and he has become a different dog completely with a whole new lease for life.

What is your goal with this Instagram page? Originally I started MixingWithMako to highlight issues we were having with Mako and his skin when it came to nutrition, then it grew into more of a showcase of the lifestyle we live with our dog. Long term the aim is to showcase the dogs we take in and how they develop, whether that be a specific thing we are working on or just how we're trying to give them the best we can. As an example, right now we are working with Samantha, the Pet's Delight nutritionist to try and peel a few pound off of Spike and pack a few onto Mako.

Would you recommend fostering to everyone? I do think if you are looking at adopting a dog but are unsure or are nervous with committing I would say try fostering to see what it's like and to help out the shelters around the country. If you feel like taking on your first dog or even an addition to the family is too much, go out and help the shelters with dog walks or even volunteer around the shelters to give them a hand I know they would really appreciate it!

How has your own pup adapted to having a foster dog around? We could tell Mako was unsure with Spike the first week or so but the 2 of them have become inseparable and are constantly wrestling around the house and in the garden. Mako has always been a jealous dog but I think having Spike in the house has really taught him to share better and wait his turn.

K9 Friends never gives up on a dog!

Bauble

Pepper

Dean

Bauble arrived at K9 Friends in December 2010 at 8 weeks old. A popular dog she was a regular on dog walks but was sadly overlooked for adoption. Finally, after 3032 days at K9 Friends, she found her forever home, she now lives in Germany with her sister Hope, another ex K9 dog.

Pepper came to K9 Friends at 2 years old when his original owner left the country. Everyone who fostered Pepper loved his energy and enthusiasm, but no one wanted to keep him forever. Luckily for Pepper, after almost four years at K9 Friends, he at last found his forever family here in Dubai.

Dean was rescued from the side of the Al Ain Road in the heat of summer 2017. He came to K9 Friends a very nervous pup who was scared of the world. He spent many months looking for that special person who would bring him out of his shell. Now in the UK with his new family, he is transformed. He finally found his own ‘special person’.

There are still so many dogs at K9 Friends looking for their own families to come and find them. No dog has been at the shelter too long, is too old or too nervous. They all deserve to find their ‘special person’. Please call K9 Friends to meet some of them.

Humbug

Leila

Kipper

Humbug came into K9 Friends in 2014 at ten months old and is a shy girl but very clever and curious when she gains confidence. She needs time to find her feet in a new environment but we’re sure there is a perfect family for her somewhere.

Leila has been at K9 Friends for over a year now and everyone has fallen in love with her wonderful big ears! She’s done well out on foster and families love her playful nature. She has lots of love to give and is always super enthusiastic when a walk is offered.

Kipper has been at K9 Friends for 2 years now and we’re really not sure why. He has lots of energy and loves to play. He would love a family of his own to play with.

We would be extremely grateful for your support.

THE PLASTIC Plastic has a dramatic effect on our wild animals and the environment. Many pieces of trash thrown out into the environment everyday end up in the sea. Worldwide 100,000kg of trash, which is mostly plastic, ends up the sea every second. Many animals feed on the waste plastic, which is generally fatal for them.

That waste is killing:

(Credit awesome ocean)

(Credit wwf.fr)
