the brilliant support they can get from it's members. We spoke to the group’s admin and moderators to get their thoughts on why Dogs in Dubai is so important and the vital role it plays in helping the stray challenge in the UAE.

What is the main reason for the huge growth of this Facebook group? Pauline, a moderator of the group: “People get referred to it by other people when they are looking for information/adoption etc. and more people are actively looking for a dog group to share their passion”. Alissar, a moderator of the group: “Being a transient community, many people aren’t familiar with the city / country’s norms, regulations and facilities. 08

Becca: “Living in the UAE can be a lonely place for many people who have left their extended family and friends in their home country. Groups like Dogs in Dubai play a key role in helping those people form new friendships and alliances as well as providing valuable information which may not be readily available elsewhere. Owning a pet is still a relatively new concept in the UAE so groups like ours offer people advice that isn’t always easy to come by.”

What makes the Dogs in Dubai group different to other groups? Paula: “The community is very engaged in Dogs in Dubai. Many instances a dog is lost and people who don’t know the owners but are close by will go out and start looking. It is a community that has one common love which is dogs, and everyone goes out of their way to help.” Amy, another moderator of the group: “We only support adoption, and only allow recommendations from pet suppliers that don’t sell animals. We aren’t biased towards rescue

What role do you think social media plays in helping to solve the stray problems in the UAE? Becca: “Social media has an enormous impact on the issues surrounding stray animals in the UAE. It brings to light the real hardships they suffer and helps to educate the wider community how they can get involved and help these animals.” What is the plan for the future for the Dogs in Dubai group? Paula: “Keep growing and educating the community until hopefully we are a vital player in reducing the amount of strays in the UAE.” Becca: “We’ll continue to keep the group on the path that it’s on, supporting dog owners, supporting rescues, educating where we can and hopefully helping to reduce the stray dog population through Trap, Neuter, Return, initiatives and adoption. KEEPING YOUR LAWN FREE FROM PESKY URINE SPOTS The cooler months see our pups enjoying the outdoors way more than the summer - and in turn, the rise of brown spots appearing on our lawns. It’s quite a common misconception that it is acid in dog’s urine that causes the brown spots to appear. It’s actually due to the high nitrogen levels. Nitrogen is essentially the waste in your dog’s urine and is the result of the breakdown of protein in the normal body processes. The canine diet is very high in protein, which results in high levels of nitrogen – as long as your pet is on your lawn, you’ll end up with blemishes. Mined in Australia, Dog Rocks help prevent the yellow burn patches on your lawn. Safe for your pet, Dog Rocks are 100% natural and organic, and simply filter out impurities from water such as tin, ammonia, and nitrates.

For best results: • Replace the Dog Rocks every two months • Make sure your dog’s water bowl is his main water source (as him drinking from other places will hinder the process) • Let the rocks submerge in the water bowl for 10 hours to become fully effective • Keep the water bowl full at all times PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

CATS WITH FIV

F

eline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in cats is slow acting and severely weakens a cat’s immune system once it takes hold. This makes the cat susceptible to various secondary infections. Infected cats who receive supportive medical care and are kept in a stress-free, indoor environment can live relatively comfortable lives for months to years before the disease reaches its chronic stages.

How Is FIV Transmitted? FIV is mainly passed from cat to cat through deep bite wounds, the kind that usually occur outdoors during aggressive fights and territorial disputes.

Can a Person Catch FIV from a Cat? No. FIV cannot be transmitted from cat to human, only from cat to cat.

Which Cats Are Most Prone to FIV? Cats who live indoors are the least likely to be infected. Free-roaming outdoor cats who fight more frequently are prone to contacting the disease.

What Should I Do If I Think My Cat Has FIV? If you suspect your cat has FIV, have him examined and tested by your veterinarian right away.

What Are the Symptoms of FIV? A FIV-infected cat may not show any symptoms for years. Once symptoms do develop, however, they may continually progress. If your cat is demonstrating any of the following symptoms, please have him examined by your veterinarian: • Enlarged lymph nodes • Fever • Anemia • Weight loss • Disheveled coat • Poor appetite • Diarrhea • Abnormal appearance or inflammation of the eye (conjunctivitis) • Inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) 12

• Inflammation of the mouth (stomatitis) • Dental disease • Skin redness or hair loss • Wounds that don’t heal • Sneezing • Discharge from eyes or nose • Frequent urination, straining to urinate or urinating outside of litter box • Behaviour change

FIV infection is routinely diagnosed by blood testing. The FIV status of every cat should be known. The most common type of test looks for the presence of antibodies to the virus in the blood. No test is 100-percent accurate all of the time, and your veterinarian will interpret the test result and determine whether further testing is needed to confirm either a positive or negative test result.

How Can FIV Be Prevented? FIV vaccines are available but may not protect all cats. In addition, these vaccines can interfere with testing for the virus. It is best to work with your vet to determine if FIV vaccination is the best option for your cat. Also, any recently adopted cat should be tested for FIV.

What Can Happen if FIV Goes Untreated?

How Is FIV Treated?

Without proper treatment, the secondary infections that can occur as a consequence of FIV can progress to life-threatening conditions. Additionally, cats with FIV can develop various forms of cancer, blood diseases or kidney failure, which will ultimately be fatal.

Unfortunately, there is no specific antiviral treatment for FIV. Cats can carry the virus for a long time before symptoms appear. Treatment hence ususally focuses on extending the asymptomatic period or, if symptoms have set in, on easing the secondary effects of the virus.

How Do I Care for My FIV-Infected Cat?

• Keep your cat indoors. This will protect him from

contact with disease-causing agents to which he may be susceptible.

• Watch for changes-even seemingly minor-in your cat’s health and behaviour. Immediately report concerns to your vet. • Have your cat checked by your vet at least twice per year for a wellness checkup, blood count and urine analysis. • Feed your cat a nutritionally balanced food-no raw food diets, please, as bacteria and parasites in uncooked meat and eggs can be dangerous to immunocompromised pets.

Can FIV and Non FIV Cats Live Together? A new study was published in The Veterinary Journal written by Annette L. Litster of Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Litster’s studies document FIV positive and negative cats living together harmoniously without the disease being transmitted, despite sharing all the same bowls, litter boxes, bedding and engaging in mutual grooming and even episodes of mild aggression. The vast majority of cats, once neutered, have no desire to bite the other cats they live with. They may play fight, but this rarely leads to a serious bite which is what would be required to inject the virus.

FIV Should Not Mean a Death Sentence FIV positive cats that otherwise look healthy, need not be needlessly killed due to a completely controllable disease, unless it has reached end stages of a chronic illness. This is of course not for everyone and will depend on the temperament of the cats intend to cohabit, but FIV has been shrouded in prejudice, and as a result too many cats are deemed unadoptable and end up being euthanized.

• Be sure your cat is spayed or neutered.

PUP MISBEHAVING? IT MIGHT BE SEPARATION ANXIETY… We often speak to customers who are getting tired of their dog misbehaving. The first question we ask is how much time they spend with their pup, to see if their naughty behavior might actually be separation anxiety. We’re all pretty busy in the UAE, so separation anxiety is a common issue. A lot of pup parents work all day, which means long periods of time alone for their dogs. Some common signs of separation anxiety are: destruction of furniture, urinating or defecating in the house, excessive barking or howling, pacing, or even trying to escape. This might come across as bad behavior, but your furbaby might really be struggling. What to do if your dog is suffering Emotional and prolonged goodbyes might help you, but they certainly won’t help your dog. He’ll likely pick up on your emotions and become stressed (or more stressed if he was already). Keep it short, and say a five-minute goodbye when you leave. Dogs often feel calmer when they can hear a human voice, so leaving the radio or TV on during the day can help to keep them company, and in turn, calm. There are loads of toys in the market to increase mental stimulation, which will keep your pup occupied. Giving it to him before you leave will distract him as you walk out, and hopefully he’ll be busy for a little while before he even notices you’re gone.

The ideal option, if you have the budget, is to opt for daycare for your pup. One of the main benefits of doggie daycare is that it relives separation anxiety, but there are many other upsides: • Relieves boredom • Means he will get the right amount of exercise • Provides an incredible opportunity for your pup to socialize • Gives you peace of mind that your furbaby is happy and safe. Our customers can now get 15% OFF with PetsVille with code LOVETOPLAY. SENSITIVE

STOMACHS

Some dogs have guts of steel and can eat almost anything they find in the yard or on a walk with no ill effects. However, not every dog is so lucky. Many tend to be more sensitive than this. Here's our advice if you think your pup is suffering. Do you have a dog that has one or more of the following symptoms? • • • •

Intermittent loose stools Occasional vomiting Excessive flatulence Vomits in the morning on an empty stomach

If so, your dog may have a sensitive stomach.

De-Worm Make sure your pet does not have any parasites. It is essential that you de-worm your dog every 3 months and follow the instructions carefully. Popular worms are: roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. We reccomend:

Prazivet Plus Deworming Tablet For Dog

Avoid generic by-product meal. Cheap dog food can be extremely harmful for your dog. We've all heard of meat by-product meal. Do you know what is in meat by-product meal? No one really does. According to Earth Island Journal, Dog Food Advisor, naturalnews.com, Meat by-product meal could contain anything from slaughterhouse waste (heads, hooves, organs and other leftovers), to diseased and disabled farm animals, road kill, spoiled supermarket food, dead zoo animals, restaurant grease, and euthanized cats and dogs. This is unfortunately legal. Food that is unfit for human consumption (and in some cases food we would never even consider eating) is completely legal as a meat source for your pets' food. So if one of the ingredients in your dog food is simply a generic animal by-product meal, or says meat meal, meat and bone meal, or simply meat by-product meal, you are absolutely going to want to buy something better for your dog. If budget doesn't allow you to spend much more, instead of buying a generic meat by-product, make sure you are buying a dog food that is specific to an animal, such as chicken by-product, turkey byproduct, beef by-product, etc. There will still probably be beaks, and organs, and hooves and other waste in there, but at least you know what animal the meat is coming from.

16

Avoid dog food and treats made in China Dog food and treats made in China are generally cheap brands, that is why they are made in China, because it is cheaper. Food is made for profit, not for quality. We reccomend:

Here at Pet’s Delight we feel strongly about grain free and quality brands. Even our cheapest ranges are grain free such as Ziwi Peak, Orijen, Acana, Pooch & Mutt, Vitalin… etc are good choices.

For dogs with food allergies If your pet has food allergies and has a sensitive stomach, then a simple chicken and rice or lamb and rice formula might be the best option for your dog.

From AED 94.50

AED 42.00

From AED 48.75

Try a grain free or low carb formula For dogs with sensitive stomachs, a grain free dog formula may be your best option as often these types of dogs will have trouble digesting grains.

The moral of the story is, don't scrimp on dog food, it'll only make your dogs' stomach problems worse in the end or it could be the cause of their problems. Paying a little extra for a higher protein diet with less fillers, carbs, and grains, your dog will not only feel better but look better too! Trust us he will thank you for it!

BEWARE: Just because something says sensitive stomach formula, or is bought at a vet clinic doesn’t always mean it is best for your pet. It is essential you look at the label and decipher the ingredients.

Lower-quality brands may rely too much on those starches as fillers such as corn & wheat, and that’s not ideal. They may also add genetically-modified corn or wheat—and we don’t fully understand the effects of GMO ingredients on dogs.

ANARKALI ’S STORY

I

found Anarkali in one of my feeding stations with a broken front leg. She was skinny but otherwise in perfect health. I took her to the vet to be spayed and have an initial assessment on the broken bone. The vet said it was most likely an injury from years ago or a congenital disorder, but fortunately there was no need for an amputation. I put her back in her garden, as she was happy there. I didn’t think of her for months as another lady was assigned to feed her station. A year later (more or less), the lady reported Anarkali to be looking extremely thin. I got to her place and was shocked to see her skin and bones and blood dripping from her broken leg. For some bizarre reason, she was already dragging her leg thus wounding it and having it infected. When I was setting up to rescue her, she caught a whiff of the food in my car and crossed the road without looking. Fortunately she crouched in the middle of the road while a car sped past over her! The initial check of her leg this time confirmed she needed amputation. And

that, coupled with the careless way she acted on the road that day, there was no way I could release her back. While she was recuperating at the clinic, I posted for a foster/forever home for her. No luck. “Well okay”, I thought, “let me foster her for a few weeks until she gets better - no problem! There’s no way I could pay for boarding”. Despite already having five cats in my house and countless others coming in and out recovering from TNR, I welcomed Ana in my house. But not for long! Thankfully I found a foster home which gladly took her in for six months.

“Well I guess you’re stuck with me!”. Now she’s with us and is BFFs with my 18-monthold daughter. They sleep and play together. I swear my daughter’s first word was “Ana”! She can’t mix with our other cats, as she’s picky like that. But she enjoys watching the birds from our bedroom on her lonesome. When I took her in, I realized that rescuing doesn’t stop when their wounds or illness are healed. It’s also making sure they go to a good home where they are loved and cared for so they won’t get sick or wounded again. I tried very hard to find her a home, when in fact she already found a home with us. And us too with her.

Great six months, I thought! I’d have plenty of time to post for her and take her for adoption days. But six months passed and not a single inquiry about her. She was constantly overlooked during adoption days. Was it her looks? Her breed? She wasn’t fluffy nor cute enough? I had no choice but to take her back in my already crazy household.

PROUD SPONSOR WITH

Hessa and Almond, two of K9 Friends wonderful success stories Hessa was abandoned at K9 Friends in January 2017. But despite this disappointment, she was always a happy friendly girl, both in and out of the kennel, who loved to play. Hessa also went out on lots of dog walks with the public, she was good on the lead and very gentle. At K9 Friends our office volunteers make charts for the kennel staff, so they can regularly monitor how much a dog weighs. After spending a year at K9 Friends, we became concerned for Hessa as she was losing weight. Last Christmas office volunteer Belinda made the weight chart for Hessa but instead of taking it out to the kennel, Belinda decided to take Hessa home over Christmas to foster her and fatten her up! We were so pleased that in the new year Belinda and family decided to adopt Hessa.

Almond was a very nervous girl who arrived at K9 Friends in Christmas 2013. She settled at the kennels and had lots of love to give the volunteers however she was very frightened of the outside world. Almond tried to go out on dog walks, but she was too scared and would sit down and not move. After spending 1,282 days at K9 Friends, a wonderful couple offered to foster Almond long term to build her confidence at her own pace. Almond’s personality grew and with that she also charmed visitors to her home! She was adopted by her fosterer’s parents and we are pleased to hear she is enjoying walkies in the UK.
