AMAZING FACTS ABOUT DOGS & CATS We all know our pets are amazing. They’re our hiking buddies, our camping friends and our outdoor explorers, and they excel at every adventure we throw at them. Aside from being amazing companions, did you know that many dogs and cats have genetic traits that make them amazing? Keep reading for fun facts you might not have known about your favorite dogs and cats!

Dogs & cats have an amazing sense of smell Ever wonder why Bloodhounds are often the breed of choice for anti-poaching trackers? It’s because they’re born with 5 million olfactory receptors, helping them track scents over 300 hours old. Dogs are also able to smell scents located 45 feet below ground, which is why they’re perfect for helping solve crimes. It’s not just dogs with an amazing sense of smell—cats’ sense of smell is 14 times that of humans. It’s their strongest sense which they rely on scent to identify people and objects.

Dogs & cats have the ability to sense medical emergencies Not only are dogs incredible companions, they can help save our lives, too. Trained service dogs can detect epileptic seizures in humans up to 45 minutes before they occur. Dogs can also be trained to sniff out cancer in humans. Moreover, research has shown that cats can help lower a person’s blood pressure, and let’s not forget the incredible impact they have on our mental health as emotional support animals.

Dogs & cats have incredible agility Though it might not look like it, the average housecat can run 31 miles per hour. Cats are also naturally sneaky and can walk with their back paws almost exactly in the same place as the front paws, which keeps noise to a minimum and limits visible tracks, helping make cats excellent predators of small rodents, like mice. Equally as impressive are sled dogs like Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, who can consume 10,000 calories and travel up to 125 miles in one day! ORIJEN is a great diet for dogs who require a highprotein diet to help keep them energized and sustained for their long journeys. 02

In a major wake-up call about the dangers of importing foreign dogs from certain regions, the U.S. will begin in mid-July banning the importation of dogs from more than 100 nations that are at high risk for rabies and other highly contagious diseases, many of which can jump species and infect humans.

Many new dog owners in the UK hope to bring their pet to work as lockdown eases. As lockdown restrictions finally began to ease in June, employees urge businesses being open to becoming more dog-friendly and combat “the looming welfare crisis” faced by a generation of pandemic pets, Lambert said, helping owners to introduce or reintroduce their pet to “normal” life while preventing a legacy of separation anxiety.

PET PSYCHOLOGY - AND HOW FOOD FUELS THEIR BRAINS

O

ur lovable pets brighten our day with bundles of energy, make us smile with their funny quirks and wow us with their lightning speed reflexes the moment a stick or a toy flies from our hand. We all know the power of walkies or racing up a tree in protecting our pets’ physical health. But keeping our companions mentally sharp and happy is equally important. Being mindful of the food we’re dishing up for our pets is crucial for their health. Just as our diet influences our alertness and mood — the food choices we make can either leave us feeling sluggish or supercharged — the same applies to our companions. Nourishing our furry friends with ‘brain food’ packed with quality, nutritious ingredients strengthens their cognitive function while keeping them happy and energised. The experts at grain free pet food brand Canagan have delved into the relationship between the mind and meals, including what we can learn from their ancestors’ diets and brain-boosting superfoods to serve up.

QUALITY NUTRITION IS ESSENTIAL IN EARLY LIFE

to meat, it’s advisable to feed this instinct and so mirror their ancestral diet. Complement high meat content with a balance of vegetables and botanicals in every bowl too. Exploring a grain free diet enables this, especially because pets find it difficult to digest grains — just ensure you make the switch gradually to avoid digestive upset.

Here are four natural superfoods with brain-boosting benefits: •

Scientists studying dogs specifically believe that it’s possible to influence the neurological and physical aspects of a canine brain — so their behaviour and intelligence — through nutrition.

This is why a nourishing diet is essential in a pet’s early years. The University of Toronto found that a dog’s brain develops rapidly during the first four weeks after birth, then slows significantly until the pup reaches adulthood. It’s therefore wise to incorporate foods like fish oil, which is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, as this can positively impact learning ability in growing puppies. Scientific studies also show that feeding puppies high antioxidant diets improves trainability. The sooner you start, the stronger and healthier your puppy’s brain will develop.

Without balanced nutrition, the nerve cells of their brain will not mature properly. In fact, this vital organ will be smaller in volume and weight, leaving it unable to function effectively. This can have negative ramifications on a pup’s intelligence for the rest of their life.

MIRROR THEIR ANCESTRAL DIET

Cats and dogs have acute instincts and senses. To sharpen these, while keeping your companion alert and energised, it’s vital to fuel them with high-quality, natural ingredients. It’s worth remembering that they’re carnivores who, in the wild, would enjoy mini meat-based meals, as regularly as possible, throughout the day. Because they’re highly adapted 06

Meat and poultry, like chicken, is another excellent source of protein, vitamins, selenium and phosphorus. Phosphorus is an essential mineral that the body uses to create energy and make new cells Fish, like salmon, is a delicious source of easily digestible protein, Omega 3. DHA, a component in Omega 3 fatty acid which aids the proper brain and eye development of puppies, while improving cognitive function in older dogs. Like meat, fish also contains selenium — a powerful antioxidant that fights oxidative stress Vegetables, like sweet potato, are a highly digestible source of slow release energy and soluble fibre that is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. These nutrients improve intelligence, memory and cognitive function Botanicals, like camomile and marigold, can improve brain power in older pets especially. Camomile is also thought to reduce stress

You may notice that your pet begs periodically — especially close to a mealtime — if you’re eating or they can smell a yummy dish being cooked. A food bowl packed with essential vitamins should satisfy them for longer. Resist throwing tit-bits from the table, as this encourages naughty habits and certain treats we enjoy can be toxic to our companions. Brighten their day with pet appropriate treats in moderation, but ensure these are natural and nutritious with a wholesome blend of superfoods.

POOR NUTRITION CAN TRIGGER BAD BEHAVIOUR

Have you ever felt lethargic after eating a big meal? Hyperactive after enjoying a sugar treat? Or struggled to focus when your stomach’s rumbling? Poor eating habits can affect our behaviour. Our companions feel this too. It’s believed that artificial ingredients can actually contribute to an animal’s mental and emotional imbalance. Moreover, some experts assert that certain additives can trigger unruly behaviour. They may be hyperactive, distracted and difficult to train.

THE LIFE OF NOOEY Written by Mubasher Khan

S

ometime in 2019, I was a tabby cat born into the world known as Al Barsha South.

that had learned to hustle and knew my fate lay in greater pastures.

Life was tough for an ambitious street cat like me as I was not born into a luxurious feline lifestyle. The days were hot and the nights were long, often filled with conflict. A constant struggle for survival over scraps of food persisted. Despite all of the hardships, I knew I was meant for a bright future.

After my vast 1 year in this world, I decided to enter the home of the exercising humans and stake my claim as the rightful owner of their territory. I created a strong bond with my human and left him with no choice but to accept me.

During my late teenage years I grew into a strong, beautiful and independent female cat. I had finally realized that I had to take my destiny into my own paws! It started when I witnessed a human exercising during the COVID lockdowns and decided that fitness would be my first step into achieving my dreams. So I exercised with this human everyday to improve my mind, body and soul. Through hard work and shrewd maneuvering, I obtained my first house in 2020 which was rather small for an aspiring cat like me. However, I was now a streetwise adult cat

What started as a kitty born in the rough streets has now flourished into a cat that has achieved its dreams. I now have my own home, drivers who take me to the veterinary clinic, the finest foods (grain free and potato free), many humans to cater to me, and a large collection of toys for my entertainment. Despite my hectic daily lifestyle of sleeping 1620 hours, playing, eating and cuddling for the rest of the day, I often stare out of the window into the world to contemplate my many achievements. Anyone can follow my instagram page @nooey_tabby to see my life that I worked so hard for. I created this account in the

hope that my fellow felines in the streets will also find their own homes and achieve their dreams of leaving the rough streets behind. My message to everyone would be to never give up and as a cat, I have learned that living with humans is the best thing for my species.

Dog Poo: What It Can Tell You About Your Furry Friend’s Health It’s not the most glamorous topic, but your dog’s poop can tell you a lot about their digestive system! Not sure what colors or consistencies are a sign of good health, or cause for concern? Let’s explore the various types of dog poo (and what they mean), then take a deeper look at the positive impact raw and air-dried food can have on gut health.

IDEAL CONSISTENCY, COATING, CONTENT & COLOR When it comes to assessing your dog’s poop, consider the 4 Cs: Consistency - on a scale of ‘super runny’ to ‘rock-hard pellets’, where does your dog’s poop sit? Ideally, it’s a formed stool with the consistency of Play-Doh (holds its form, but can easily be squished). Coating - there should be no mucus coating or film on your 08

dog’s poop (mucus could be an indication that something is irritating their colon). You should be able to scoop it up and leave no trail behind. Content - unfortunately, this is the trickiest ‘C’ to assess without a close-up inspection! Watch out for: • Grass (which could be an indication of a tummy upset) • Spaghetti-like strands (possibly ringworm) • Rice-like flakes (possibly tapeworm) • Lots of fur (could indicate overgrooming due to stress or allergies) • You should also see no sign of foreign objects - although some dogs are more inclined than others to swallow the odd toy or piece of plastic! Color - a ‘normal’ poop is a shade of chocolate brown, but it depends on the individual dog and the diet they’re eating. The below chart outlines the color you want to aim for… and those you want to avoid.

DOG POOP COLOR CHART Find out what’s healthy and what could be cause for concern.

THE IMPACT OF DIET ON DIGESTIVE HEALTH Diet plays a major role supporting digestive health and maintaining healthy stools. You only have to look at the difference in size between a raw or raw alternative-fed dog’s poop and a kibble-fed dog’s poop to see the impact of diet on digestion. A dog eating a raw or raw alternative diet (like ZIWI Peak, which is gently air-dried) will have naturally healthy stools, which tend to be smaller and darker in nature. Why? Because these diets are more digestible. The more digestible the food, the smaller the poop! A raw/raw alternative diet can also deter some dogs away from a poop-eating habit, because their stools are less smelly - and therefore less ‘enticing’.

TRY RAW ALTERNATIVE AIR-DRIED FOODS FOR ADDED CONVENIENCE The benefits of a raw diet are widely documented, but it can be difficult to get the balance of nutrients right when you’re preparing your own raw diet at home (too much calcium results in a very hard stool, for example). This is why a raw alternative diet like ZIWI Peak works perfectly for many pet guardians - we take the guesswork out of finding the right balance and offer nature's nutrients in a ready-to-serve format. Each recipe has high inclusions and variety of meat, organs, seafood and bone in whole-prey ratios, so you know your furry friend is getting everything they need to thrive. If you’re considering transitioning to ZIWI Peak, make sure you follow our transitioning guide to ensure the process is a comfortable one for both you and your pet. Dogs with existing digestive issues will benefit greatly from switching to ZIWI, but the transition period needs to be done carefully. Remember to scoop, check, chuck Once your dog has adjusted to an air-dried diet, it’s important to keep an eye on their daily bathroom habits. As awkward as it may seem, being familiar with your dog’s poop is an important part of supporting their overall health and wellness. All it takes is a quick inspection - scoop, check, chuck! The odd poop that doesn't quite fit the ‘ideal’ description isn't necessarily cause for concern, but the better you can understand what’s normal and what’s not, the better equipped you’ll be to step in and help your furry friend when they need it.

Dental problems are the most common diagnosed health condition in dogs over the age of three. Teeth and gums are vulnerable to disease, which means they need extra attention. Clean your dog’s teeth every day to prevent plaque buildup (which can lead to bigger problems). Give your dog dental chews, such as the Kong Dental Sticks, or feed a kibble made for dental health, like Canagan Free Run Turkey Dental dry dog food.

As with human ears, it’s important to regularly clean your dog’s ears as part of their grooming regime, but also to check for ear infections or other issues. This can be done at home with damp cotton wool and dog ear cleaner, or your groomer can take care of it for you as part of a normal groom. We offer this service at our Pavillion Mall store in Jumeirah Park.

Ears

According to Martin Coster, DVM, MS, DACVO, staff ophthalmologist at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, “the most common diseases we see in the canine eye are dry eye, cataracts, and glaucoma.” When checking your dog’s eyes, look for any redness, swelling, or unusual discharge. The eyes should be clear and bright, and the lining should appear pink and healthy. Certain foods can help you look after your dog’s eyes, blueberries, broccoli, carrots, cold-water fish, eggs, garlic, kale, pumpkin, sweet potato, and tomatoes all can have benefits. If you do notice something wrong when doing a routine check, see your vet.

UNDERSTANDING

One of the most common things that affects your dog’s joints is his weight. If your dog is overweight his bones and joints are more prone to damage. Maintain your dog’s weight, exercise him regularly, and massage his joints. Other things that can help are supplements, like the Mobile Bones Supplement from Pooch & Mutt.

Joints

A dog’s stomach can be a sensitive place. Quickly changing food, or adding something new into his diet can throw off his digestive system and upset his stomach. Allergies are also common for certain breeds, so make sure you do your research before you purchase dog food. Sensitive tummies often work best with fish-based foods, or those made specifically for sensitive stomachs such as the Vitalin Sensitive Lamb and Rice.

Stomach

Grooming your pet’s paws is an important part of keeping them healthy. Trimming nails, and the hair between paw pads stops them being in pain when they walk or mattes forming. Moisturising is also a good idea. And always ensure you take care of them outside in extreme heat or cold with Ruffwear Dog Boots.

Paws

Your dog’s coat should be shiny and healthy, if it isn’t, it could be down to an unbalanced diet, excessive bathing, or allergies. If your dog is experiencing red skin, loss of fur, or recurrent skin and/or ear infections, it could be due to allergies. It’s not uncommon for dog’s to be allergic to certain foods, such as chicken, beef, or eggs. If you notice changes in your dog’s coat, this could be why. To combat this, along with other issues causing a lack of shiny coat (such as low levels of Omega-3) we recommend feeding a diet rich in fish, such as Fish4dogs or Orijen Six Fish pet food.

NUTRIENTS YOUR CAT NEEDS TO LIVE ITS BEST LIFE

W

e all love our favorite feline friends. They’re cute, they give us a boost with the sound of their purr and quite frankly, they don’t expect much from us – cats are generally low-maintenance. Though what they do expect from us and need is proper nutrition for them to live happy, healthy lives. Providing key nutrients for your cat sets a baseline for everything else and is truly the foundational element to their longterm well-being. Here’s a great nutritional guide to ensure you’re doing everything you can to make your happy cat a healthy cat.

best. Your cat is an obligate carnivore, so they need a diet rich in protein from whole animal ingredients, which is needed for growth and development. It’s also a good idea to use treats with a high meat content as well. Your cat also needs moderate levels of fat to help with nutrient absorption and metabolic regulation. Cats also need nutrients like vitamins and minerals, but it’s important to feed them the right proportions. Vitamin A, D and B are common, plus minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium and sodium are requirements as well.

First, figure out what type of food is best for your cat. Whether it’s dry or wet food, for a specific life stage like kitten or senior, or has a specific purpose like weight-control, many cat food options are available. It’s best to choose options that have a high percentage of animal ingredients, like ACANA® cat food recipes, which all have at least 65%* quality animal ingredients such as meat, poultry or fish. As we all know, cats can be finicky eaters, so it’s ok to try a few different kinds of food to see what your cat likes best – just make sure you’re transitioning your cat to a new type of food or recipe properly and gradually.

Let’s talk about how to translate these insights when looking at your cat’s food ingredient label. When it comes to looking at the meat ingredients, here’s an easy way to think about it, using chicken as an example:

Cat foods are complete and balanced, and reading through the nutrition labels is a good place to start thinking about which food is 16 12

Ingredient – Chicken or deboned chicken: This means it includes muscle meat. That’s where you find important nutrients, vitamins and minerals, as mentioned above. Ingredient – Chicken meal: This is a dry ingredient made from cooking down the ground flesh, meat, bone and cartilage into a concentrated protein powder. Meat Meals also provide an excellent source of essential minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus. It’s important to ensure the food uses high-

quality meals, if included in the diet, since meals can vary greatly – for instance, ACANA® only uses high quality meals. Plus, it’s important to avoid an excess of filler and look for high-quality ingredients instead. It’s also good to be on the lookout for artificial ingredients and preservatives and steer clear of those. Luckily, no artificial ingredients are added in the kitchen when making ACANA® foods, which makes it an easy choice. Many cats simply like to eat a mouthful at a time, so one of the easiest ways to feed them is to measure out their food for a day and give them a little bit at a time. This ensures they won’t exceed their daily allowance. Keep in mind, treats should be no more than 10% of their daily calories. ACANA® recipes offer a variety of diets and flavors, brimming with protein and nutrients so your cat is getting everything they need to look and feel their best. A favorite for cat parents is ACANA® Indoor Entrée, a recipe developed specifically for indoor cats to help maintain a healthy body weight, skin and coat. If you’re looking for some guidance check out the “Find the Right Recipe” tool on the ACANA website.

WHY IS MY DOG

BARKING AT NIGHT? Aside from fears of noise complaints, you might be worried about your dog who seems to only start barking at night time. Why is he doing this? How can you stop it? We explore this in this article.

Boredom If you spend your weekdays out of the house at work, it's common for your pup to sleep the majority of the day out of boredom. This means that come evening, he's got a lot of unspent energy. Taking longer to exercise and play with your dog can help relieve this issue.

Alertness We know that dogs have heightened senses. One of the aspects of this is that they hear noises that we don't. If it's nighttime and they are disturbed by a noise, it can lead them to bark if they don't understand what it is. Training your dog to be more comfortable with unexpected noises, or having white noise on at nighttime are ways to manage this.

He needs to use the toilet Like we often do as humans, dogs may need to go to the toilet at night time. This is particularly common with puppies. Toilet training, taking them out to use the toilet just as they go to bed, or investing in puppy pads are good ways to combat this issue.

Pain It is possible that your dog is in pain or suffering from illness if they are constantly barking at night. If it is happening out of character, or if you have tried all of the above solutions and nothing is helping, it's time to see the vet to rule out any

underlying illnesses.

UNDERSTANDING HEAT STROKES IN DOGS. Heat stroke is a phrase commonly used for severe hyperthermia or in other words, extremely elevated body temperature. It is a serious and potentially fatal episode that unfortunately is quite common in the U.A.E. especially during the hotter summer months. Through the education of dog-owners, heat strokes can easily be prevented in dogs. Due to soaring temperatures in the past couple of months, we at Modern Vet have been faced with an influx of emergency cases related to heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Veterinarians can immediately diagnose a heatstroke case by taking a dog’s temperature. The normal rectal temperature of a dog is between is 38.3 - 39.2 degrees Celsius. Anything above that would be called hyperthermia. If it is related with an infectious disease or inflammation of some sort, it would be referred to as a fever; this is the methods vets use to distinguish between the two possible ailments. 14

The main causes of heat strokes include exposure to hot, humid environments or taking part in strenuous physical exercise. Dogs have a poor physiological cooling system that makes it difficult for them to decrease their body temperature. Approximately 70% of cooling occurs via radiation and dissipation from their body surfaces. The body's first response to increased temperature is vasodilation. This is when blood from the organs and muscles are sent to peripheral areas such as the ears, face and paws as these areas have less fur; from here the heat can be lost by radiation and convection. If this mechanism is not enough the respiratory rate would begin to increase and panting begins. Panting and salivation is the most viable way dogs can use to cool down as well as sweating from their paw pads. Dubai city’s temperatures in summer soar well above 40 degrees Celsius during the day and are somewhere above 30 degrees Celsius at night. Temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius increases the risk of heat stroke by an ample amount.

How to prevent heatstroke in dogs: • • •

Heat stroke is most common in large and brachycephalic breeds and is uncommon in small breeds. Brachycephalic breeds or in other words, flat-nosed dogs such as Pugs and Boston Terriers are more susceptible to heat strokes as they suffer from what's known as brachycephalic airway syndrome, or BAS for short. BAS causes a dog's breathing to be inadequate, meaning they are unable to cool themselves down properly. This places them at an extreme risk for developing heatstroke or heat exhaustion. Obesity, older dogs and puppies are also at a higher risk in suffering from heat strokes. Heat strokes or hyperthermia can occur in 30 minutes if animals are exercising in hot, humid temperatures with little shade or an opportunity to cool down and rest. Rapid early recognition of hyperthermia and prompt aggressive appropriate treatment are the most important factors in having a good prognosis.

What signs to look out for if you believe your dog is having a heatstroke? • • • • • • • • •

Panting Excessive drooling Sweaty feet Frog-leg position Dark pink or red gums Tachycardia or elevated heart rate Lethargy Staggering around Vomiting or diarrhea

In severe cases there could be bleeding, semi-coma or in worst cases a coma. Dogs presenting with s semi-coma or coma will have a higher mortality rate.

Consider the possibility of a heatstroke happening whenever the temperature is above 25 degrees Celsius. Never leave your dog unsupervised outside during hot days and definitely do not leave your dog in your car. Keep the air-conditioning on at home and make sure that your dog always has access to fresh water. Adding ice cubes is also an option. Short walks outside is okay but only during the early morning or in the late evening, and be sure to have fresh drinking water with you on your walks. For brachycephalic breeds, elderly and obese pets, and those with heart or lung disease walks are not recommended at all during the hot summer months. They should be kept inside with the air-conditioning on. Short bathroom breaks should be alright.

What to do if you suspect your dog is becoming hyperthermic with increased respiratory rate and heart rate? • • • •

Move to a cooler place immediately. Get your dog into a cold bath or wrap fresh wet cold towels around the neck, limbs and abdomen. Provide cold fresh drinking water. Get to your veterinarian immediately! Call ahead to make sure they are alerted to prepare for your dog’s treatment as soon as you come in.

Severe hyperthermia can result in widespread organ failure and must be noticed and treated promptly. Mortality rates are directly associated with the duration and intensity of hyperthermia. Renal failure, liver failure and swelling of the brain are common complications. Animals who present with a coma or hypothermia after a hyperthermic event generally have a very somber prognosis, even with extremely aggressive therapy. Please stay safe out there during the hot summer months. In the case that something does go wrong, we at Modern Vet are here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Like with dogs, ear cleaning can be part of a normal professional groom (we offer this service at our store in Pavillion Mall, Jumeirah Park), or you can do it at home. The Bio Groom Ear Mite Treatment not only helps any ear mites or ear ticks, but aids in ear wax removal, too. Use a damp cotton wool pad and gently clean your cat’s ears regularly.

Ears

Your cat’s eyes should be clear, bright, and the pupil size equal. The outer part of the eyeball should be white, with the iris surrounding a dark black pupil. You should regularly clean your cat’s eyes with a damp cotton ball, wiping outwards to remove dirt from the inner eye - be very careful, it can be easy to scratch the cornea by accident. If you notice: discharge, tearing, cloudiness, closed eye, the third eyelid is visible, or your cat is pawing at her eye, speak to your vet as soon as possible. You can help look after your cat’s eye health by feeding a nutrient-dense diet which includes omega-3 fatty acids, betacarotene, and vitamin A, taurine, and antioxidants. Carrots, broccoli, cooked sweet potato, blueberries, and kale all support good eye health.

Eyes

THE

In the wild, cats would clean their teeth by chewing grass or bones, and it can be hard to replicate the same effect with your domestic cat at home. Brush your cat’s teeth daily if possible, but at least twice weekly to keep her gums and teeth healthy, and try using a product like the VetIQ Gum Shield Spray for extra help in maintaining their teeth and gums. Feeding a varied diet of kibble and wet food is also a good idea to help keep teeth strong and healthy.

BODY

UNDERSTANDING

Sadly, kidney disease is a leading cause of death in cats, and UTIs are also extremely common. Therefore, looking after your cat’s kidneys is really important. Warning signs for acute kidney failure can include vomiting, weakness, dehydration, and changes in how often your cat urinates. Chronic kidney failure is more gradual, and can be a result of an accumulation of the nephrons within the kidney due to excessive exposure to poisons, poor diet, birth defects, and other infectious diseases. To help prevent this, start by ensuring your cat is eating a balanced, healthy, and moisture rich diet. Your cat’s diet should include a good protein source that can be easily digested, and a ready supply of drinking water. By having a diet of both dry and wet food, and encouraging her to drink water, you give your cat a better chance of having healthy kidneys.

Kidney

Looking after your cat’s joints is crucial to her mobility. The most common reason for a decline in joint health in cats is degenerative joint disease (DJD), also referred to as osteoarthritis, which happens when your cat’s joint cartilage weakens, leading to the bones rubbing together, causing inflammation and pain when your cat moves. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help your cat maintain healthy joints. First of all, one of the main factors related to joint issues is weight, if your cat is overweight, it puts additional strain on the joints which can lead to bigger problems. If your cat is overweight, try feeding Orijen Fit & Trim. It’s also really important to keep your cat active, and add supplements if you feel she needs additional support.

Joints

Your cat’s coat is important for a number of reasons: it gives her sensory data, protects from the weather, and can help a cat get all important Vitamin D. If your cat’s coat isn’t shiny, there could be a number of reasons: poor nutrition, weight problems, age, or she’s being bathed too often. Feeding a balanced diet, controlling your cat’s weight, and avoiding too much bathing, will help keep your cat’s coat shiny. Feeding a diet rich in fish can also play a factor, not only in creating a shiny coat, but reducing tear stains, too.

Advice from Pet's Delight

01

Does Catnip help with cat anxiety? Is exposing a cat to too much catnip bad for them?

02

How often should I give my dog a bath? Is there a way to keep him fresh between washes?

Question from @emm.cat123 on Instagram

Question from @jinzilla on Instagram

Answer:

Answer:

Yes, Catnip can help your cat with anxiety. Catnip is a herb, it's part of the mint family, and has been given to cats for a long time. Catnip generally makes your cat feel calm and content, but it is possible for some cats that it has the opposite effect, and makes them hyper and a little aggressive, and others it can have no impact at all. For this reason it's important to observe how your cat reacts during a test, typically the effects of catnip last for 10 minutes up to an hour. Your cat is unlikely to overdose on catnip, but they can get sick if they eat too much. You can usually trust your cat to know when they have had enough, but use your instincts if you think they are overdoing it.

A good average is once per month. However, if your dog regularly roles in mud or plays in the pool, you might want to bathe him more often. On the other hand, if your pup is prone to dry skin, it would be more gentle for him to be bathed less, and with shampoo specially made for dry skin. Brushing your dog between washes will remove dirt that is often caught in fur, as well as reducing shedding, and remove dead skin cells and loose fur. Regular brushing also helps distribute natural oils, for a healthy shiny coat. Pet wipes, good oral care, and ensuring your pets bedding is washed are other more obvious ways to keep your dog fresh between bathing.

03

What do I do if my dog scoots his bum on the floor?

Question from @sxxra._xx on Instagram

Answer:

Scooting a bottom across the floor is a very common behaviour in dogs if they have an anal sac issue. Anal sacs can become clogged or injured, which causes your dog to behave in this way. If it is repeated behaviour even after you have checked and expressed the glands then it's best to check with your vet that there isn't something else going on.

04

How much human food is too much human food?

06

My bunny always seems bored. How can I get her to be more active and keep her entertained?

Question from @sxxra._xx on Instagram

Question from @joycedxb2019 on Instagram

Answer:

Answer:

Generally, human food is too rich and fatty for your dog to digest properly, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and other conditions. A lot of human foods can also contain levels of sodium which are too high for canines. Plus, it's common to overfeed with human food, as you don't have the same feeding guidelines that you find on the back of your pet food packaging. It can be easy to get carried away with feeding your dog your food, what starts with every once in a while can quickly become a habit you and your furry friend get used to. Over time, this can result in your dog becoming sick as mentioned above, or turning into a picky eater. Not to mention the increase you're likely to see in begging.

A bored bunny can be problematic: if your rabbit is bored they're more likely to eat more and become obese, plus they groom themselves more often which can cause an increase in hairballs. So as much as you want to keep your furry friend busy so they don't get bored, it's also a good idea to do so to avoid these health issues. Having plenty of rabbit toys, a large hutch or space for them to roam, and hiding treats and playing with them are all ways to keep them occupied and active.

We always recommend feeding your dog high quality pet food, to ensure they get all of the nutrients they need to lead a happy and healthy life.

05

Wet food vs Solid food, which is more ideal?

Question from @dashavanese on Instagram

Answer:

The ideal combination is to feed both, that way you're sure your pup is getting a balanced diet and wet food adds an extra boost of hydration. If it's one or the other, we would generally recommend dry food, as it's not only packed with the right nutrition but kibble is good for your pet's dental health. Many wet foods aren't 'complete' they are 'complimentary' to your dog's diet, which means many don't have the right nourishment in order to be the only thing your pet eats. If there are medical reasons why your pet can't eat kibble, we'd recommend speaking to your vet to ensure you are feeding food that is balanced.

How to dispose of dog poop

When you reach the perfect balance of warmth and moisture, all the nasty pathogens are eventually killed off. Your compost is then ready to use on non-edible plants. If you want to find out more about compostable poop bags, take a look at our blog: Can you compost dog poop?

Bins

Once you’ve cleaned up your dog’s poop, depositing the poop bag in a bin is commendable, and it’s always been a frontrunner in keeping our communities clean. Admittedly, in some areas, these bins aren’t as easy to come by. Poop bags are strong and sturdy, so you don’t have to worry about them splitting as you carry them to the nearest bin. If you find yourself deep in the countryside or some woodland, with no bins insight, knowing what to do with your dog’s poop can be tricky. Some people suggest a ‘stick and flick’ policy. In our experience, however, we advise you to always bag, pocket and either bin or compost when you can. Flicking, or hurling, your poop into the nearby bushes and woodland, poses a number of problems: firstly, compostable bags will take longer to decompose when they are not disposed of in a compost.

Worm Farming

What's the best way to dispose of dog waste? What's the impact of not cleaning up after your dog? We'll answer these and more. Don't forget your dog poop bags

Before embarking on your adventure with your dog, make sure you’re equipped for the task ahead. Lead, check. Ball, check. And, the most important of all, poop bags, check. These bags are a must-have on any walk with your dog; without them, you could find yourself in some sticky situations. By law, you need to carry at least two. Compostable dog poop bags are a great choice. They’re robust, easy to carry, and match the strength and versatility of regular plastic bags – designed to deal with any poop size. They’re biodegradable dog poop bags which break down when placed in well managed compost piles.

Composting

Composting is a great way to dispose of your dog’s poop, as long as you get it right. Once you’ve picked up after your dog and bagged it up, you can dispose of it at home, or at an industrial composting facility; make sure you check the facility accepts animal waste, beforehand. At home, you can get rid of your dog’s poop by creating your own compost pile. Organic waste needs the right level of oxygen, heat and water to fully decompose, so it’s important you keep your compost pile warm and moist. Sawdust is also a great addition to combat the high levels of nitrogen contained in our pups’ poop.

22

A disposal choice not as common as compost or dog waste bins, but still a great way to get rid of your dog’s mess. Believe it or not, worms are quite happy to eat a lot of things we don’t want. These include potato peelings, apple cores and, of course, animal waste. Worms eat the waste and eliminate all odours. After the worms have done their bit, you can then use it as the ideal fertiliser for non-edible plant beds. Australian company, Wormtec, advises that you provide a high carbon alongside food and animal waste. Things like newspapers and leaves are a great way to, again, combat the high level of nitrogen. It’s also simply a fantastic way to use up other forms of waste.

Flushing

Poop and toilets go hand-in-hand, right? With dogs, it’s not that simple. We do not recommend flushing poop bags down the loo. A number of water companies have come out and advised people against flushing dog waste down their toilet. If you’re unsure, bins, compost or worm farms are a great alternative.

Carbon paw print: how to be an eco-conscious pet owner Food, toys, poo bags, and more – the things that involve taking care of your pet can come at a cost for our planet. According to the book Time to Eat the Dog? The real Guide to Sustainable Living, by Brenda and Robert Vale, our pets can have a carbon footprint that’s double that of a sports utility vehicle. What can we do as pet parents to combat this? Think green first Choose brands that have biodegradable packaging, poo bags that are compostable, and pet toys that are made with recycled material. Some brands, such as Beco with its eco-friendly toys and accessories, and Pooch & Mutt with its treats and wet food Tetra Pak packaging (recycled) are making big steps in being eco-friendlier. And many other brands are making moves with similar initiatives. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Your dog’s weight

In order to help ensure that your dog maintains a healthy weight, the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) has developed a reference guide to body condition scoring. You should assess your dog’s body condition on a monthly basis and then adjust feeding amounts if necessary.

Underweight

5-15% body fat / 10-20% below ideal body weight

Characteristics • • •

Ribs, spine and hip bones are very easily seen (in short haired pets) Obvious loss of muscle bulk and abdominal tuck Very little/no fat can be felt under the skin

Advice Your pet is likely to be underweight. Your pet may have a naturally lean physique but we recommend you speak to your local vet to rule out any underlying medical reasons such as an overactive thyroid gland. If your pet is healthy but otherwise underweight, your vet is likely to advise some dietary and lifestyle changes.

Ideal Weight

16-20% body fat

Characteristics • • •

Ribs, spine and hip bones easily felt Visible waist with an abdominal tuck A small amount of fat can be felt

Advice Your pet is in ideal body condition. This is great news, as research has shown that pets at their ideal body condition can live up to two years longer. To keep your dog in perfect shape, monitor its weight and body condition on a regular basis (eg. reduced exercise, recent surgery, extra treats, or even factors such as stress) can result in weight change.

Overweight

25-35% body fat / 10-15% above ideal body weight

Characteristics • • •

Ribs, spine and hip bones are hard to feel Waist bearly visible with a broad back Layer of fat on belly and at base of tail

Advice Your pet is potentially overweight. Being overweight is unhealthy for pets as it can lead to a shortened lifespan, heart disease, arthritis and diabetes. Speak to your local vet for advice and a thorough health check-up. The vet will look for any underlying health issues, a change of diet and lifestyle is likely to be suggested. Many vet practices run free weight management consultations, ask about these services when you ring to book an appointment.

24 22

If your pet is above this weight it is classed as obese and this can have serious medical implications. The vet will look for any underlying medical reasons as to why your pet may be too heavy. If there are no underlying health issues, a weight loss programme will probably be individually developed for your pet and should include diet and lifestyle changes. Where to eat in dubai with your pup

Yes, the summer is coming to an end. But we’re not there yet. I still have a hard time when I’m outside and that means my dog of 14 years old must struggle at least as much as I do. That’s why we still don’t spend too much time outdoors and prefer to stay in the AC. And as you know, that doesn’t mean that we stay at home. Instead, we visit one of the indoor dog friendly places that you can find in Dubai. I’m sure you’ve all explored a few indoor dog friendly restaurants and cafes already this summer. One of my new favorites is Ivy’s Secret Garden. Ivy’s Secret Garden was born from an irrefutable plant obsession and an affinity for bringing joy into the lives of others. Early on they sold their “living home décor” online and transformed their client’s space with a vivid splash of verdure. However, recently they opened the doors to a posh, new storefront to provide even more for the community. Their warehouse is dog friendly and apart from the plants they sell, they also have a café that serves delicious coffee and bites. They serve homemade cakes that are just to die for. Not a coffee lover? They also serve other drinks like milkshakes, 30

frappe’s and (non-alcoholic) mojitos. They also organize a lot of workshops that make a fun day out. Just follow their page to see their calendar of what is happening. When you visit Ivy’s Secret Garden, it will be likely that you’ll bump into Ivy & Robert, the founders of Ivy’s Secret Garden. There’s a big chance they will come and say hi to not only you but of course also your dog. Or they will introduce you to one of the community cats that hangs around in this serene space. Sit back, relax and enjoy your time in this indoor garden. I’m sure you and your pooch will have a fun time out of the house.

You can find Doggie adventures in Dubai on Instagram and Facebook where we show you all dog friendly places in Dubai and the rest of the UAE like restaurants, parks, beaches, activities, events and even staycations.
