ASK OUR

NUTRITIONIST 1

Samantha Frost

How do I deal with fur shedding and excessive barking? Question from @stutchihuahua on Instagram

Answer: Firstly, lets address fur shedding. Dog hair can be a pain, you can find it everywhere from your car seat to your sofa – and even sometimes your dinner plate. Certain breeds shed more than others, such as German Shepherds, and some coats tend to lose hair more than others too – like those with double-coats. However, there are some lifestyle or environmental factors that can contribute to your dog’s coat shedding which you can change. Things like allergies, a poor diet, reactions to medication, fleas, or even anxiety can all be contributing factors. I would recommend getting some special brushes to help reduce your pet’s shedding – the FURminator reduces shedding by up to 90% which can help you in the short term. More long term I would carefully consider your dog’s diet, is it packed with protein, free from grains and corn – or is it full of fillers and low on meat? Your dog needs the right nutrients to have a healthy coat, once you get this right the shedding should reduce. I recommend foods that are grain free, high in animal protein, with all the correct nutrients for your pet. Some of my tips for reducing shedding are: 1. Adding olive oils or flaxseed into your pets diet 2. Including a high Quality protein diet 3. Including omega 3 & 6 in the diet ( six fish Orijen / Fish4dogs ocean white fish / salmon, Acana wild coast ) Now onto barking. No-one should expect a dog never to bark, it would be like expecting a child not to talk. But some dogs do bark

excessively and it needs to be gotten under control. The first step is to figure out why your dog is barking in the first place. Some of the most common reasons for barking are: Your dog feels territorial/protective: when a person or animal comes into an area that your dog considers his or her own, it can trigger barking. Your dog is alarmed or fearful: some dogs will bark at any noise or object that startles them – this doesn’t necessarily have to be in their territory. Your dog is bored or lonely: dogs left on their own can become sad and may bark because they are unhappy. Dogs are naturally pack animals so spending too much time alone can be upsetting for them. Separation anxiety: it’s not unusual for dogs to suffer with separation anxiety. There are signs that your dog may be suffering with this over loneliness, such as pacing, destructive behaviour, and going to the toilet in different places. Your dog may also run in circles or do other repetitive movements such as running alongside your fence. How to help your dog It will take some training and a lot of patience to get your dog to bark less, it’s not something you can change overnight. Before you try the below, we would recommend consulting with your vet to see whether there could be an underlying medical issue causing your dog to bark. The first rule is not to shout, if you shout your dog will think you’re joining in and will feel encouraged. Speak calming but firmly. Try and train your dog to understand the word quiet.

A tired dog is a quiet dog. Take a long walk, or have a long play to wear your dog out, he or she will be less likely to bark. If you find that your dog barks mostly when you’re gone, keep him or her busy by providing different toys or having a fooddispenser. Never ever reward barking. If your dog thinks you are happy with this behaviour he or she will continue to do it. If the above steps don’t help, it might be worth speaking to a dog trainer. We recommend Aimee Orme at Pawfect Behaviour.

2 My dog is a picky eater. What do I do? Question from @maxx_the_poodle on Instagram

Answer: It’s not unusual for dogs to be fussy from the offset, or become fussy at some stage in their life. Dogs can be finicky; they can turn their noses up from foods they don’t like which can be hard to handle if you find yourself constantly rotating your dog’s food between flavours or brands – as you need to switch over carefully each time. However, if your dog has suddenly stopped eating his or her food it’s important you visit your vet to rule out any health issues, things such as tooth pain, kidney or liver issues, or even cancer could be underlying issues. Once you’ve ruled out a medical condition, consider the below. Top reasons why your dog might have stopped eating: 1. Have you changed his or her food? Lots of dogs won’t accept a new food straight away, it also might not agree with their stomach if you make an immediate switch. This is why we recommend transitioning to new food over a period of 7-10 days, start by adding some of the new food to the old food and then gradually remove the old food. If you do the transition properly and your dog is still refusing his food, give him a little while and his hunger should soon kick in and he’ll gobble it up. 2. Could your pup have tummy ache? Dogs get tummy aches just like humans do. If you see signs such as vomiting or diarrhea, then letting your pup avoid his usual food could help him.

3. Could he or she be stressed? Recently moved, changed your schedule, or introduced a new family member? Dogs can get stressed and it can affect their appetite just as it does with humans. Ways to get your dog eating again 1. Change the texture of your dog’s food by adding some warm water, or topping it up with wet food. Sometimes it’s the texture of kibbles on their own that your dog is fussy about. 2. Get a dog food that smells strong, or a topper that smells strong. Don’t think about food that appeals to you when choosing the flavour or brand of dog food for your pet. For dogs, the food that smells the strongest is the best – flavours like fish are a great choice for attracting your dog to his or her food.

3 My dog gets scared when I try to pet her. I think she might have had a violent past.

Question from @theboywithwings4 on Instagram

Answer: I wish I could say this was an uncommon problem but here in the UAE it sadly isn’t. If you rescue a pup they often come with challenging pasts, which leaves them with habits or personality traits that don’t work well in their new owners’ home until they settle in. The main piece of advice I would give is to please be patient, understanding, and kind. There will be a number of triggers for your pet that will remind her of her past, and once you learn these it will be easier for you to train her to know you aren’t going to harm her. It’s also really important that, if possible, you have an in-depth chat with the person or organisation you are taking your pet from, as they are often aware of their past or at least their triggers so you are prepared from the offset. It may take a while but your pet will come around, and if it has been a while then again I would recommend touching base with an experienced trainer who will be well-versed in advising you such as

GETTING OUT

- by Aimée Orme

AND ABOUT WITH YOUR DOG The weather in the UAE is currently fantastic and perfect for getting out and enjoying the best this country has to offer. There are a few things to consider before setting paws outside of the house. The first thing is to decide on the activity. There are lots of great outdoor places to head to with your dog here in the UAE. Hiking and camping are perfect this time of year and incredibly popular, or you could simply explore a new walking route. There has been a huge rise in dog parks, in various locations, some offering free access and some charge a nominal fee. Other great activities include some of the many fantastic restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating. Before deciding on an activity for your dog ask yourself these questions:

Does my dog like people? If your dog is scared or anxious around other people, whether or not they show this as aggression or avoidance, a busy restaurant full of people is not going to be an enjoyable activity for your dog. Instead go for a quieter activity such as a quiet walk in a new neigbourhood, or a hike.

Does my dog like other dogs? Does your dog genuinely enjoy meeting new dogs and playing with them nicely off leash? If yes, then head to one of the dog parks. If you cannot answer this question with an honest “yes” then it is best to stick to places where there are less dogs. 12

Is my dog comfortable with heat? Whilst the mornings and evenings are cool, the middle of the day can still get very warm. If you have a dog who is sensitive to heat such as an older dog, or a snub - nosed breed like a Frenchie or a Pug, its best to not go out in the middle of the day, and stick to morning or evening.

Is my dog confident and comfortable in new situations? Dog’s who are generally fearful of certain stimuli such as traffic/ other dogs/people/cats/children are not going to cope well out and about. Taking them somewhere new requires careful planning to manage their stress levels in collaboration with a force free behaviourist.

Is my dog well trained? Taking out a dog, who jumps on people, pulls on the leash, barks at birds, won’t settle, steals or begs for food is not going to be fun for you to take out to new places. You are going to get stressed and frustrated with your dog. For safety if you are letting your dog off the leash, even in a secure area, he must have a good recal.

Will my dog enjoy this? If you’ve answered no to any of the above questions your dog is not going to have fun. Better to stick to familiar activities together at home or use daycare facilities if suitable, and he enjoys it.

Pawfect Behaviour is a Dubai based company launched in 2017 by Aimée Orme. Aimee is a life long animal lover with 9 years experience working as a professional trainer and Behaviouist. Her qualifications include two animal Behaviour degrees from British universities, she is a member of the pet professionals guild and the institute of modern dog trainers and a qualified agility instructor. She currently shares her life with 3 dogs and 2 cats.

Will I enjoy taking my dog? The whole point of taking your dog somewhere is to have fun. If you are struggling with your dogs behaviour in the chosen activity you will not have fun, you will get frustrated and potentially ruin your relationship as well.

Is my dog’s walking equipment secure? Accidents happen, despite our best intentions. Make sure your collar or harness is secure, that your dog cannot escape. Also check it for signs of wear and tear that might cause it to break. In case of an emergency Your dog should also be wearing a tag with your up to date contact number on, and for those Dubai dogs a valid municipality registration tag. This will mean your dog is reunited with you much quicker.

Is my dog up to date with all his vaccinations? This is important to not only gain access to some of the activities or facilities but also to keep your dog safe and healthy. This also includes tick treatment and deworming treatment. If your dog ticks all the boxes and you feel he and you would enjoy heading outside together beyond your usual walkies, then go and have fun. If you feel your dog is going to struggle with the activities, then do not despair. We often have to manage our own expectations when we take on a dog and learn to enjoy and appreciate the dog we have in front of us, not the dog we wished we had. There is also plenty of help available from force free, qualified professionals. Sometimes just a few sessions can dramatically improve your dog’s behaviour. If you take your dog out and about to an activity you thought your

dog would enjoy and it all goes wrong, do not panic. Even the best of us have bad days. A buildup of excitement and over stimulation can cause a dog to behave in unexpected ways. This is normal. Like when we burn the dinner and then burst into tears. You are not actually crying over the burnt food, you are crying because it’s the final thing that pushes you over the edge, on top of the fight you had with your partner and the fact that your boss hated your ideas at the weekly staff meeting. Your dog might decide he’s had enough of being petted by strangers and growl or hide away from them. Be your dog’s advocate. Make sure he’s given the choice to avoid activities or interactions with people and dogs. If he’s choosing to interact make sure he has lots of rest breaks to settle down again and drink water. Don’t be worried about saying no for your dog.

HANDY PRODUCTS YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOU NEEDED...

to have a selection of wet foods available. Our Beco can cover can help with wastage as they let you keep the tinned food fresher for longer.

I want to take my dog out all year round but I worry about the weather Weather conditions in the UAE can make it impossible to follow the same routine for walking all year around. Aside from walking your dog at cooler times of the day, there are other things that you can do when the weather starts to get warmer. The Savic Aqua Boy water bottle helps you keep your dog hydrated on walks, and is a more convenient way to give him water than taking out a bowl and a bottle of water.

Being a pet parent is one of the most rewarding roles in the world, but it can also be a bit of a pain. Here are some of our top products that can solve some of the common pet parents frustrations... My cats fussy, and won't eat a full can of wet food so I end up wasting Cats can be picky when it comes to their food, one day they like tuna the next they'll only eat chicken, and then one day they're back to tuna. They like to mix it up so it's a good idea 16

Your pups paws are another concern in the warmer or colder weather and also if you're wanting to take your dog out to different terrain he may not be used to. The Ruffwear Boots will keep your dogs feet warmer in winter, stop them from being burnt on the floor in summer, and also protect them if you are on rocky terrain.

I struggle with storage and end up buying smaller bags to keep food fresh and avoid wastage

I'm constantly forgetting my poo bags when I take my dog out!

Storing pet food can be a challenge, depending on how quickly you get through it. If you have a smaller dog, it might take you a while to get through the food compared to a larger breed, this can mean you end up buying smaller bags more often which works but isn't as cost effective. Some of our top brands offer resealable bags for their dry foods, such as Ziwi Peak and Thrive, which means you can buy a bigger bag and keep it fresher for longer without having to buy a separate bin or find other ways to keep the bags fresh. Speak to our team if you want advice on dry foods with resealable bags.

Following our campaign: Poop happens, pick it up, we saw a lot of our customers purchasing the Beco Pocket. We all know how important it is to pick up our pets poop, and you can refill the Beco Pocket with poo bags and attached it to the handle of your lead so you'll never forget.

Treats can also be a challenge for similar reasons, that's why we love brands like Hunter who have thought of savvy ways to keep their treats fresher for longer with their velcro seal. Ziwi Peak is also a great brand for their resealable treats.

My cat is constantly scratching my furniture

I worry about the safety of my dog when I take him out in the car

Cats nails get itchy so they have to scratch. They'll quickly turn to your furniture if you don't give them any other options. Scratching trees can be great, but if you don't have the room then scratching boards work really well too.

Much like humans, dogs need to be strapped in when in the car for safety reasons, pets should be too. The Petmate booster seat helps you keep your pet safe whilst you're commuting - ideal for small to medium dogs.

STELLA’S STORY

Stella’s instagram: @stellapurrkins Hi my name is Maria, furmama of Stella Purrkins, 5 years ago I decided to find myself a little furbaby. I’m against shopping for pets so contacted 38smiles and there I found Stella! She was abandoned in Barsha at 1 year old. I went to meet her and immediately fell in love. I put my hand out and it took just two sniffs and she rubbed her cheek on my hand to let me know she was adopting me as her Hooman. She seemed so much smaller then now looking back but her personality really shined. She has a great love for chewing any wires she can get her chompers on (3 MAC chargers and counting), adores her Friday brunch treat of wet tuna food and sneezing in your face when you least expect it. She’s now 6 years old, still the best morning pillow thief and enjoys going for daily corridor walks to check on all the neighbours. She’s my little Yoda And I love her more each day and couldn’t imagine my life without her. So thanks Stella Purrkins for adopting me! ^_^* -Written by Maria Gasan PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

CAT FOOD TOPPERS, WHY DO YOU NEED THEM?

Cat food toppers like Applaws Cat Soups (the pouch contains three servings) or canned from Kit Cat are an affordable way to not only get your kitty gobbling up her kibble but upping her hydration levels, too.

Encouraging your kitty to eat dry food can be a bit of a challenge, cats can be stubborn and a lot more fussy when it comes to kibble than wet food. But it’s important that she gets proper nutrition which is hard to get from wet food alone, dry food also plays an important role in keeping her Do I always have to feed them as a topper on dry teeth in good health. food? These factors leave you having to come up with clever ways to get her eating dry food. This is where toppers can come in. What are the benefits of cat food toppers? Not only do these tasty tins and pouches encourage your furbaby to eat her dry food (which generally is a better, nutritionally complete diet than just wet food), but they help her get some much-needed moisture from her diet, too. Cats are notorious for not drinking enough water off their own backs, leaving you to either leave the tap running (yep, cats seem to enjoy the water more if it’s running) or to supplement their diet with wet food which contains more moisture.

Not necessarily. As long as she has a well-balanced diet, it can also be a way to give your kitty a little treat every now and again. As much as having your cat eat her bowl of kibble is important, which is why we would recommend a topper if you’re struggling, you might not want her to have a topper with every bowl of dry food either. Toppers are created with the above in mind, but you can also add a spoonful of your usual wet food to your cat’s dry food and it works in a similar way – the texture isn’t quite as good as a topper as these are special formulas. Still, have questions about toppers? Speak to our in-house nutritionist, Sam on 052 191 6961 or nutrition@petsdelight.com. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

WHERE TO EAT IN DUBAI WITH YOUR PUP

V

alentine’s day is coming and most people are starting to think of where they can go to, so they can have a nice romantic date for two. Sorry, did I say two? Well for sure you’d want to bring the dog(s) of course. When you think about a romantic Valentines trip, you most often think about going to a European city like Rome. Where you can enjoy nice Italian food, often combined with a nice glass of sprakling and a beautiful view. But why go all the way to Europe when you can find such a beautiful spot in The UAE? Carluccio’s Eastern Mangroves in Abu Dhabi has all of the above. A menu with authentic Italian dishes from different antipasti to share to risotto and delicious pizza’s. And of course there are a lot of different desserts to choose from.

They have two outdoor terraces with a view of the beautiful mangroves and one of them is a licensed terrace. And the best news is that dogs are allowed on both of them. My dog Boefje and I visited them a few weeks ago and we had the best experience. All the team members were extremely friendly and Boefje was spoiled with cuddles. Carluccio’s also has two dog friendly outlets in Dubai. You can find one at The Springs Souq and one at The Arabian Ranches Souq. But the next time we’ll visit Carluccio’s again, we’ll go back to Abu Dhabi. Just so we can enjoy that beautiful relaxing view.

You can find Doggie adventures in Dubai on Instagram and Facebook where we show you all dog friendly places in Dubai and the rest of the UAE like restaurants, parks, beaches, activities, events and even staycations. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE
