AWARDED BEST DOG FOOD OVERALL BUSINESS INSIDER 2020 & 2021

RECOGNIZED AS BEST*

Our state-of-the-art kitchens and award-winning foods are beyond comparison. As pioneers of modern evolutionary foods, ORIJEN pet foods has nutritionists and a veterinarian dedicated to creating the best foods available. *Award Best Dog Food Overall by Business Insider in 2021

PACKED WITH ANIMAL INGREDIENTS Dogs and cats are evolutionary carnivores, so their diet should be rich in animal-based protein like meat, poultry or fish. We pack each diet with animal ingredients to maximize animal-based protein and nutrition.

AUTHENTIC WHOLEPREY DIET In the wild, dog’s and cat’s ancestors naturally consumed all the most succulent and nutritious parts of their prey, including meat, poultry or fish, organs and bone. That’s why we include these whole animal ingredients in all our diets.

WHAT ARE WHOLEPREY INGREDIENTS?

WHY WHOLEPREY?

WholePrey animal ingredients are a nutritional superfood of meat, poultry or fish, succulent organs like heart, liver and kidneys, and small amounts of bones to support your pet’s nourishment.

WholePrey muscle meat and organs are packed with nutrients like amino and fatty acids, and small amounts of bones contain minerals to help nurture your pet. ORIJEN foods require less supplementation because of their nourishing animal ingredients.

Here are a few ideas on how you can include your Pup in the holiday fun this year:

The Light Show: Dress the pack up and head out for a festive dog walk! Take an evening stroll to see the Christmas lights in your neighborhood. We’re sure your Pup will enjoy the sites as much as you do! Oh Snap! Dust off your best (and cheesiest) Christmas jumpers and dog outfits and take a photo for your family Christmas card this year. Get Your Bake On: Why not challenge your fellow pawrents this season to a bake-off exchange – pet edition! See page 13 for pet-safe treat inspiration. Treasure Hunt Time: Create a treasure hunt of doggie treats- so your pet doesn’t feel left out when you’re nibbling on all the holiday chocolates. Hide the treats when they are in another room and then welcome back in to search for the treats. It’s not only entertainment for them, but also for the family too.

Let's Talk Grooming

Q. How can I make my Dog less anxious and more comfortable with grooming? Taking your dog for a walk, exercising or playing before the appointment can help him be less anxious. I would also recommend getting your dog familiar with grooming tools at home and reward them with treats so they start taking it as a positive experience.

Q. Is Blow - Drying safe for my pet? Yes, blow drying is completely safe when done the right way and using the right temperature. It also helps clean your pet’s coat thoroughly removing dead skin particles or dandruff too.

Q. My dog sheds excessively! How can I keep his fur under control? I would recommend brushing your dog regularly using tools like Furminator or a rubber brush to remove fallen or dead hair and help reduce hair accumulating around your home.

Q. Do I need to brush my longhaired dog's coat? It is very important to brush your dog especially if they have a long coat as they are highly prone to tangles and matts. Combing or brushing your long-haired dog every day won’t give tangles or mats a chance to form and makes their grooming experience less painful.

Q. How often should my dog's teeth be cleaned?

Our head groomer, Leonardo, answers some of the most common questions he gets asked by customers.

My advice would be to brush your dog’s teeth at least two to three times a week to prevent build up of tartar and bacteria. Regular dental care and hygiene also helps combat bad breath.

For your grooming questions and concerns, drop us an email on info@petsdelight.com or direct message us on social media @Petsdelight. To book your appointment, call us on 04-5667143. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

WHEN TO SWITCH FROM PUPPY FOOD TO ADULT DOG FOOD When should you start feeding your puppy adult food? Owning a new puppy is an exciting, hectic time between training, socializing, and vet visits. As your puppy grows, you might wonder: How long should my puppy be on a puppy diet? Or when should I transition my puppy to adult dog food? Puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs, and it is recommended they continue to follow a puppy diet until they reach their full maturity. A puppy diet is different from the diet of an adult dog in that it contains a higher fat and calorie content to meet the growing needs of your puppy. When your dog reaches the end of its growth stage, their nutritional needs change. It is important that you switch them to a more suitable diet to support their overall health!

How do you know when your dog has reached maturity? Generally, a dog’s breed size will determine when they are done growing, usually somewhere between 10 months to 2 years. Here’s a general guideline for when different dog breed sizes reach adulthood: 12

• Toy or small breed dogs (under 20 lbs/9 kg) 9 -10 months • Medium breed dogs (20-60 lbs/ 9-27 kg) 12 – 14 months • Large breed dogs (60 lbs +/27kg +) 16 – 24 months

How do I transition my puppy to an adult diet? When transitioning your puppy to a new diet at any stage, start by mixing 25% of the new food with 75% of their current food, then gradually increase the new food over the course of 5-7 days until you’re feeding them 100% of the new food. The specific ratios between new and old formulas will depend on your dog, so keep an eye on the stool and slow down if necessary!

How to feed large breed puppies? It is important to note that large and giant breed dogs (maturing over 70 lbs) have different growth requirements and should not only be on a puppy diet for a longer period of time, but they should be on a diet appropriate for the growth of large breed puppies until they reach maturity.

What Every UAE Pet Owner Should Know Every prevention step we as pet owners take goes a long way in keeping our furry friends safe and sound at home. While we know that even the most cautious pet parents can’t always prevent the worst from happening, there are many steps you can take to not only keep your furry friend from escaping, but to make it much easier to locate them if they do get lost. Firstly, it is important to prepare for the unexpected in any case your pet does get lost. Make sure: • • • • •

Your pet is registered with the Municipality and has a valid tag Vaccination records are up-to-date Your pet is wearing a secure collar ID tag with contact and address details is attached to the collar They are microchipped by a reliable vet clinic

We may wonder why our pets decide to run away in the first place and where they go. Opportunity, boredom, separation anxiety, unfamiliar surroundings could be some of the key reasons. If you have moved to a new place, your pet may escape trying to find their way back to their previous home. Others may wander away from home in search of a mate! some cases, pets can still escape even after prevention methods In are followed by their owners. What should we then do to make sure they return home safely? 1. If you live in a residential community, direct a thorough search within the area. Head to the security and notify them to quickly scan surveillance cameras (if any) for you to start searching in the right direction. 2. Gather friends or family to help and check if your neighbours may have seen your pet wander in the area. Be sure to take some pictures of your pet along for them to identify and keep an eye out.

Purchase any ID tag on our website, APP or in-store and get FREE engraving.

14

3. Turn to social media and spread the word. There are plenty of UAE- based Facebook groups such as Dogs in Dubai, Pets for

Adoption/Lost & Found in UAE, Abu Dhabi Missing Pets, Dubai Pet Lost and Found, and Dinkys Lost and Found Cats. Many pet owners in the region are active members of these groups and they might spot your little one. 4. Create flyers that contain your pet’s pictures, detailed description, your contact details, reward (optional) and put them up on residential notice boards, local stores, vet clinics in the area and anywhere you think your pet is likely to go. 5. Reach out to local newspapers to spread further awareness.

If you have been reunited with your furry friend it is important not to take your anger and frustration out on them. Creating a negative experience in the moment could make it harder to get hold of them if they escape again. Instead, give your pet cuddles and calm them to make it clear that coming home is a good thing! Training your pet is key to preventing them from escaping or getting lost. When you train your pet, you establish a line of communication with him. It will ultimately strengthen your bond with each other and greatly increase your chance of gaining control in an emergency.

Tips To Keep Your Pets Calm During New Years Eve Fireworks Fireworks are a staple way to welcome the new year for many around the world, but as joyous as it may be for you it could cause a night of anxiety and discomfort for your pet. Did you know, canines’ hearing range is up to two times and greater as ours?

Just for Dogs

Just for Cats

• • • •

Go for an extra-long walk or extended playtime in the day to wear your pup out before the evening festivities. Keep windows and curtains closed to muffle the sound of the fireworks Put on some music or play the TV as background noise Create a quiet space where your dog can feel safe and hide out in. Try using a natural relaxant in your home. Our Pet Remedy Plug-In Diffuser is a natural de-stressing solution for dogs and cats and could work wonders in calming your pet throughout the evening.

• • • •

Try to keep your cat in doors during the peak NYE hours. Cats can become more stressed if they are outside during fireworks. Keep your curtains closed Provide a hiding place for your cat at home. Distract them with catnip. We have a variety of catnip products in store and online, from infused toys to sprays! Use a calming collar. These collars contain pheromones and a chemical that animals naturally release into their environment. When your pet inhales this, it can help relax and ease anxiety. We have collars available for both cats and dogs.

As pet owners, we have a responsibility to keep our dogs healthy, which includes managing their weight.

Whilst exercise is a good way to help your dog lose weight, sometimes, due to illness or old age, dogs can be less active.

The right weight for your dog depends on its breed; Whippets, for example, have vastly different parameters to Newfoundlands. There’s a healthy weight range for each breed, and if your dog falls within this, there should be no cause for concern. Weight changes often aren’t that noticeable, especially if the change is gradual and over time. If you are worried about your dog’s weight, there are some key visual indicators that can help determine if they’re under or overweight.

Senior dogs are often a lot less mobile, meaning they burn less calories, so their food should contain a lower percentage of fats.

Are the ribs, backbone or other bones visible? Can you see them from a distance? If so, this could be a sign that your dog is underweight Can you barely see the rib cage or not at all? This could indicate that your dog is overweight. There are also other medical issues that could cause bloating, so if this is the case, it’s best to book an appointment with your vet to rule these out Does your dog have a large/bloated looking stomach that hangs too low? This is another sign that they may be carrying a few too many pounds 02 12 22

Being particular about your dog’s carbohydrate intake can also be helpful, so make sure you cut out the right ones; typical fillers that are difficult to digest and look for ingredients like sweet potato, that releases energy slowly and is a great source of soluble fibre. Keep a note of your dog’s weight to monitor their progress and remember that slow and steady wins the race – a healthy rate of weight loss is 1% per week. If you begin to see a dramatic change, visit your vet to rule out any other health issues. If you do switch your dog onto a grain-free dog food, it is quite common for them to appear hungry initially. As grain-free food is often full of higher quality ingredients, this means that the quantity you will be feeding them is less. Their stomach will need time to adjust to this decreased amount of food, but don’t worry, your dog will still be getting all their dietary needs met in the recommended portion size.

Parvovirus in Dubai:

How to Prevent the Potentially Deadly Disease

Parvo is spread in Dubai through direct contact with an infected dog, or indirectly, by the faecal-oral route and cannot be passed onto humans.

What are the symptoms? The most common signs of intestinal form are: • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Weight loss • Lack of appetite If your dog displays any of these, take them to a vet immediately.

How to prevent your dog getting CPV The best way to prevent this disease is to follow the correct vaccination protocol advised by your registered vet, and wait two weeks post dose before going outside. The virus is so contagious that even if your pup simply sniffs another dog’s stool, it can catch the disease. Which is why it’s so important to pick up after your dog!

Being a dog owner in the UAE, there are a few things we must be continually aware of to protect our furry friends throughout the year. From preventing heatstroke, to protecting their paws from burning on hot floors, there are measures we must take to ensure our pups have a good quality of life. This includes vaccinations! Earlier this year Dubai saw a spike of pups being tested positive for the potentially deadly disease, Parvovirus (CPV), or Parvo – for short. Unfortunately, this disease can see a rise in cases when a number of unvaccinated puppies are imported into the UAE by breeders.

What is canine Parvovirus? The virus is a contagious viral illness, most commonly detected in intestinal form. It can affect both puppies from around six weeks to six months old, and elderly dogs that are not vaccinated, or have a compromised immune system. Ultimately, the virus attacks the dog’s ability to absorb nutrients, quickly leading to dehydration. In other cases, CPV may attack in cardiac form, affecting the heart muscles of very young puppies, which often leads to death. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

The Secret to A Happy and Relaxed Dog Starts with Positive Socialisation

D

id you know that puppies have a 'critical socialisation period' between approximately 3 - 17 weeks of age? The puppy's experiences during this critical period of learning and development can influence and shape their behaviour well into adulthood. Positive socialisation for your canine friend means that they are exposed to different scenarios and environments to ensure they become confident and prepared for a broad range of situations.

But the training doesn’t stop when your puppy has hit adulthood! Even older dogs can benefit from regular socialisation experiences to ensure they do not develop bad habits as time goes on. We spoke to Dogwalk, a multi-service canine facility in Al Quoz, Dubai on their tips to help you get started.

What age is best for puppy socialisation? Puppies can begin socialisation classes as soon as they have completed their full course of vaccinations (DHPPiL, Rabies and Kennel Cough), usually around 3 months old. But in certain cases older dogs, and rescues also require specialised socialisation too.

How can a dog be socialised? There are many different methods to try: at home, in classes or playdates are a great place to start. Socialising your dog requires meeting other dogs and people too. Exposing them to new sights, sounds and textures are important. Letting children be around your dog in a controlled setting, and getting a variety of different people to approach and play with them helps as well. Make sure to take it slow and be aware of your dog’s limits!

Do I need to do anything special when I socialise my dog? Make interactions positive and give plenty of praise and treats! It could be all new to them, so every encounter is a chance to make it a positive experience.

What if my dog seems frightened during socialisation classes? Socilalisation sessions are managed by qualified trainers who specialise in canine behaviour. The purpose of the sessions is to slowly encourage socialisation with other dogs and people, and trainers manage the situation in the best way possible for all the dogs present.

If you are socialising your dog outside of training classes, always remember to take it slow, introducing them to different stimulants will help them learn over time how to deal with things. This takes time, so remember to be patient with your dog!

Does Dogwalk have any classes that can help my puppy/rescue/unsocialised adult dog with socialisation? Yes, absolutely! We offer socialisation training classes every Monday and Wednesday, from 10am-12pm. Our 2-hour socialisation sessions are specifically for dogs who require a more targeted approach to their dog and/or human interactions. Each session is led by one of our qualified dog trainers and is tailored to each dog’s specific needs and requirements. This could be important first-time puppy interactions, helping unsocialised dogs with fear aggression, or giving time to nervous dogs who need to take things slower to come out of their shell. Dogwalk offer a range of services, from boarding, transportation and hydrotherapy, to birthday party options for your furry friend. For more information or bookings, call/WhatsApp them on 052 861 0990, email at info@dogwalkonline.com and follow them on Instagram @dogwalkdxb.

Managing IBD In Cats And Dogs Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is inflammation of the stomach or intestines, caused by a specific reaction to chronic irritation. Symptoms include (but are not limited to) diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss, fatigue, depression, dull coat hair, and abdominal pain in your cat or dog.

Causes of IBD

Management of IBD

While there is no single cause known for IBD, hypersensitivity to bacteria and additives, such as artificial colours, flavours and preservatives often play a major role. Food allergens including meat proteins, additives, artificial colours and preservatives, milk proteins, and gluten may also result in irritations to the digestive tract, while some dogs and cats are genetically predisposed to developing IBD.

Managing IBD is a sensitive task so we recommend always consulting with your primary veterinary practice before starting any medication or changing your pet’s diet.

Many pet food brands include non-meat ingredients such as grains, cereals, rice, potatoes, corn, maize, carrots and sweet potato in their products, which can cause sensitivities and indigestion in some cats and dogs. Regularly consuming pet foods with these ingredients can cause inflammation of the stomach and intestines, resulting in IBD.

ZIWI, A Healthy Feeding Alternative

ZIWI believes in feeding as close to a raw diet as possible, one that is highly digestible with high meat content, and no additives, artificial colors or preservatives, or grains.

ZIWI® air-dried recipes contain a minimum of 96%, and our canned recipes contain a minimum of 91% meat, organs, bone, and seafood. Our air-dried recipes have a digestibility rating of over 95% so your cat or dog is able to easily digest the food and extract the necessary nutrients and energy needed, and it provides all the right ingredients to match your cat or dog’s nutritional requirements.
