OUR RAMADAN EDITION s the Holy month of Ramadan draws close, we here at Pet’s Delight have decided to highlight the need of charity and giving – not only to our fellow humans but to animals in need. It is a religious duty to be kind to all those who are in need – humans and animals

alike.

We have been working closely with pet rescue groups K9 Friends and 38 Smiles, see page 6 and 7 for some beautiful pets that are in desperate need of a loving home. Our Pet’s Delight Motor City store has opened its doors for 38 Smiles open days, keep your eyes peeled on our social media pages for the date of the next one. Winston's story is a perfect example of a happy ever after for one lucky Frenchie. Anastasia is our unsung hero this month. Do have a look as to how she has made a difference and what she thinks the UAE can do to help solve the stray issues. Does your cat give you cat litter problems? We have some great tips to curb this dirty habit once and for all. Cat hair everywhere? As the hotter weather is just round the corner, this will become more of an issue with those of you with long haired cats. We have some advice that can help, turn to page 19. Giving back to you too, we have pooled together some amazing deals on some of your favourite brands and services. Don’t forget to check out our generous offers for the season on pages 14 and 15. Teaming up with Doggie Adventures, we hope to give you ideas as to what new pet-friendly places are out there for you and your beloved pooch to explore. We are super excited at the launch of two new amazing pet food brands: Fish4Dogs (and Cats) and Canagan. Each with their unique benefits we are fulfilling our promise to you by constantly bringing you the best pet food and accessories out there. If you are feeling a little overwhelmed as to what to feed and need advice, we have our very own nutritional specialist: Sam Frost who will be more than happy to help. Please feel free to contact her on nutrition@petsdelight.com. Hope you have blessed and peaceful month ahead. Remember: Adopt and don’t shop! PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

ADVICE

FROM OUR NUTRITIONIST

Samantha Frost My pet has allergies and I’m thinking about changing his food, what would you suggest? If you think your dog or cat is suffering from an allergic reaction one of the easiest things you can do is switch their food. Signs of allergies include: • • • • •

Itchy and/or red, dry, flaky, oily or damaged skin causing your pet to itch, lick, and scratch Itchy eyes that may be runny Ear infections Vomiting Diarrhea

As a first step, I would recommend avoiding grains and choosing a food that is hypoallergenic – which the majority of grain-free foods naturally are – as this simple change could get rid of your pet’s symptoms. Cats and dogs don’t need grains in their diets, so it will do no harm cutting them out. If this doesn’t do the trick, or you are already feeding this kind of diet, it might be that your pet has an allergy to certain meats. It’s more common than you might think for dogs to be allergic to chicken or beef, particularly smaller breeds such as bulldogs and pugs which are very popular in the UAE. Try a food that is made 04

with a single meat protein, as this can help you eliminate the meats your pet might be reacting to. Ziwi Peak is one of the best kibbles you can buy, partly because it uses single meat proteins in most of its kibbles, and contains 96% meat. Try the lamb or the venison flavours, as your pet is less likely to be allergic to these. If you’re looking for a food that’s more purse-friendly, Fish4Dogs and Fish4Cats is made of only fish, another protein pets are less likely to be allergic to. It’s always advised to speak to your vet if your pet is suffering from an allergy to ensure there are no underlying issues.

I want to understand what is in my pet’s food, but pet food labels and ingredients lists confuse me, help? Most customers I meet are puzzled when it comes to pet food labels, and I don’t blame them because they can be at best confusing and at worst completely misleading. One of the easiest ways to understand them and what they mean is by following the 1% salt divider. By law pet foods have to contain less than 1% salt, they also have to list ingredients in the order of the percentage contained in a bag so that you can understand how

much of each ingredient is present. Therefore, by finding where in the list is says salt, you can be sure everything listed after that is less than 1% of that product. Some brands take advantage of this in their marketing to be able to claim their foods includes things like blueberries – but when you look at the ingredients they contain less than 1% of this food. There are lots of other things to look out for in pet food labels, if you need help drop me an email nutrition@petsdelight.com or message us on social media @PetsDelight, and I’d be happy to help.

My cat is overweight but he’s really fussy with food and will only eat cheaper brands, what can I do? Cats are notoriously fussy with their food. On top of this cheaper brands, like those you find in the supermarket, are packed with junk, which unfortunately smells and tastes good to your cat; this makes it difficult to move him off it. When trying to change your pet’s food it’s important to bear in mind that you need to do it over 7-10 days, mixing the old food and the new and gradually increasing the amount of new food until you are feeding that food only. If you try and make an immediate switch, you can upset his stomach.

If that technique doesn’t work, try adding a high-quality wet food on top of his dry food such as Applaws, Little BigPaw, or Fish4Dogs. This will provide him with better nutrition without switching him immediately to a new diet, there are also lots of flavours to keep him excited with his food. Once he’s got settled into his new diet, you can try the dry food from the same brand, if you still add the wet food on top he might not notice the change in kibble. If this fails, you could reduce the amount of the unhealthy kibble you're feeding him and add healthy treats between his meals like the Applaws Tuna Loin, or homemade healthy treats like raw vegetables e.g. broccoli and carrots to give you peace of mind that he’s getting something nutritious.

I would love to talk to you about your pet’s nutrition! Please drop me an email on nutrition@petsdelight.com or direct message us on social media @PetsDelight with your questions.

Who we are K9 Friends is a shelter that rescues abandoned and stray dogs in the UAE and finds them loving new homes. Formed in 1989, it is the longest established dog rescue in the country. Our aim is to find all our dogs homes for life. We have a very successful homing process whereby each dog is neutered, health checked and then carefully matched to its prospective new family. This, along with a program of events that focus on education and responsible dog ownership, allows us to address the issue of stray dogs in the UAE in a sustainable way. The shelter is always working at full capacity caring for 130 dogs. We have helped more than 7000 dogs in the UAE over the last 30 years. We currently have 28 pups and 102 adult dogs for adoption.

Adoption. At K9 Friends we have dogs of all ages, sizes and personalities and are sure to have one to suit your family. Once you have decided to adopt a dog the next step is to call the K9 Friends office to make an appointment to come and meet the dogs. You will meet with one of our homing volunteers and they will introduce you to the suitable puppies and dogs. If you have other dogs, bring them too - as it is important they get along with your new family member.

Other ways to help. If you are unable to adopt a dog but would like to help K9 Friends, here are some other ways you can get involved: Fostering, dog walking, volunteering at the shelter, transporting dogs to the vet, sponsor us - dog, kennel or an air conditioning unit, school visits, corporate visits and dog walks, sponsorship opportunities for businesses, help with kennel maintenance, attend our puppy ball, sponsor the puppy ball. For further information please call the K9 Friends office 048878739 opening hours are 9am to 1pm Saturday to Thursday.

The pups. Full of love, cuddles, playfulness and curiosity for the world, the K9 Friends pups are always the stars of the show. All the pups are very well handled by the volunteers and engage in social learning, lead training and understanding basic commands. They’ll grow up to be medium sized and will develop their own personalities as they explore more of the world, hopefully in their forever home.

WINSTON'S STORY a lot of people who want to help look after him when i am working or on vacation, even although he is very lazy, refuses to walk most of the time unless he knows he is going to see his fur-friends.

W

hen I moved to Dubai and got my own apartment sharing with others I decided to look to adopt a dog and give it a forever home. However the chances of getting a breed that you wanted was always going to be hard to find through the adoption process. I worked in Mirdif with many local clients, and I always spoke about my love for French bulldogs and followed many French bulldog pages on IG in awe of their cuteness level and personalities. One day one of my clients randomly sent me a Whatsapp message asking if I wanted to adopt her sisters dog, not knowing the breed or anything about my love for frenchies, I began to ask questions only to find out it was a 9 month old black and white male french bulldog. To my excitment I said yes straight away and messaged the apartment group chat telling them im bringing them home a dog. However the excitment turned to disappointment on more than one occasion, her husband was not ready to give up the puppy, even though they had just had a baby for the wife it was too much to take care of a baby and puppy as her husband worked away also. I slowly began to give up hope that I was ever going to adopt the dog and began looking at other options. Out of the blue one day, around a month later, I got a phone call saying come and collect the puppy, he is all packed and waiting for me to collect him. At the time my sister and niece were over visiting Dubai, I dropped everything and drove straight to collect him. He was 10 months old named Beau, brought in from Ukraine at 3 months old. He was waiting for me in a cat box at the gates of the family home with bags of toys and his belongings, I felt so sad for him. I brought him back to my small apartment (compared to what he was living in) with no garden, he had never been on a leash or house trained so it was a massive task to start his training in a new environment at 10 months old. Not before long he settled in, was house trained and turned into a very well mannered boy, he will not touch his food unless he has given everyone a paw, loves lots of attention and has

The good thing about the bulldog breed is they do not need a lot of exercise in general, and as Dubai is not known for being dog friendly - especially around the Marina area it is hard to take him out for long durations anyway, so 3 to 4 short walks a day is all he needs to keep up his exercise regime. In the summer it is hard for any dog with the heat, let alone french bulldogs, as their short snout makes it impossible for them to cool the hot air coming into their bodies. Over panting can be severe to frenchies as this causes their heart rate to increase and can cause panic and lead to heart attacks. In summer I take him to the garden area which is grass so his paws do not get burnt from the pavement and it is a shaded area. He is only allowed out for a five minutes toilet break and I always take a portable water bottle with me. I have a large apartment so he can run around to keep active inside, and at the weekends he gets to go to a doggy day care to play and run around in air conditioning to keep up his exercise as they are known to be prone to weight gain easy if they do not stay active. Frenchies also are known for skin and food allergies, It has taken me a while to find the right diet for Winston, he went up to 18kg at one point in the summer, over eating, red skin, itching, and portion control etc. Now I have him on Pooch & Mutt food and keep him away from grains and chicken, his weight has dropped and his skin is so much better. As much as they are amazing dogs, the breed is hard work between much needed attention and his nutrition needs. I am so happy Mr. Winston came into my life. Written by Sharon Mcconnell

FREE FROM PATHOGENIC BACTERIA Our slow and gentle twin stage air-drying process is unique. Why? It removes pathogens such as e-coli, salmonella, and listeria, while protecting the bioavailable nutrients present in our ingredients. Because there is no need for preservatives, sugars, or glycerine, our food is safe, clean to handle, and as nutritious and digestible as a completely raw diet.

HIGH MEAT CONTENT Ziwi Peak air-dried recipes contain a minimum of 96% real meat, organs, and seafood, mirroring the whole prey diet from which dogs and cats originated from. The first 5-8 ingredients in our Ziwi Peak air-dried recipes are a range of meat, organs, and seafood. Compare us to other brands in the market and we guarantee you'll notice the difference.

SMALL BATCH Unmatched nutrition. Hand crafted in small batches every day, Ziwi recipes use fresh meat, organs, ground bone, and seafood to mirror a whole-prey, nutrient-dense diet that promotes optimum health.

Each pound of Ziwi Peak Air-Dried starts with 3 pounds of raw ingredients! Talk about a power-packed meal!

FARM TO BOWL Where the air is clean and water is pure and plentiful, livestock is raised year-round on this green pastures, which means that they have been raised with the ability to wander and graze freely. The animals can eat and live as they would naturally – reducing stress and promoting better animal welfare. We never compromise on animal welfare. We only source our meat from New Zealand farms - those that meet our strict standards for free-range, grass-fed, and sustainablyfarmed livestock. JUST AS NATURE INTENDED All your dog or cat needs to thrive. Ziwi Peak recipes are crafted to replicate the whole prey diet, using meat, organs, ground bone and seafood as the basis for 96% of the ingredients in our air-dried recipes. The remaining ingredients are essential vitamins and minerals, which form to create a complete and balanced diet for all breeds and life stages. GRAIN FREE WITHOUT PEAS A carnivore by nature, your dog or cat is best built to process a whole prey diet, rich in proteins and fats from animal sources. So Ziwi never uses grains, corn, soy, potatoes, wheat, or rice. Instead our small batch recipes have everything your dog needs to thrive and truly taste life.

SUPER FOODS We include 3% New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel in all of our recipes; an ingredient that delivers anti-inflammatory effects as well as essential Omega 3 fatty acids, perfect for maintaining good skin and coat health. We include 7% species-specific, cold-washed green tripe in all of our air-dried recipes (except chicken), an easilydigested nutritional powerhouse which is also naturally palatable. Cats and dogs love it! NO NASTIES Our wet food is free artificial filling or binding agents such as TSPP, carrageenan, or agar-agar. These artificial binders have no nutritional purpose - we use a natural binder that meets all of the unique nutritional requirements for your pet and is palatable and appealing in texture and flavour. Our cans are BPA-free, so no nasty chemicals absorb from our packaging to your pet food either! BETTER THAN ANYTHING OUT THERE Expect to feed less food than kibble, freeze-dried, or raw. Approximately three servings of raw ingredients go into crafting one serving of our air-dried food! Work out the cost per day and you'll likely find it to be less expensive than you expected.

NO FILLERS OR YEILD ENHANCERS Glycerin is added to pet foods and treats for several reasons: 1) as a sweetener, 2) as an ingredient binder, 3) to help keep the product soft and chewy, 4) to inhibit mold growth, and 5) as a yield enhancer. We only use ingredients that are essential for your cat or dog to thrive, and mirror the whole-prey diet, and therefore you won't find glycerin as an ingredient in our food! PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

SOLVING CAT

LITTER BOX

PROBLEMS

Reasons why your cat won’t use the litter box • An unclean litter box. • Too few litter boxes for the cats in the household. • A cramped litter box. • A litter box with a hood or liner. • A litter box with sides that are high. • Too much litter in the box. • An uncomfortable location that doesn’t allow for privacy . • A change in the kind of litter you use. • Stressors like moving, adding new animals or family members to the household. • A conflict with another cat in the household. • A new preference for eliminating on certain surfaces or textures like carpet, potting soil, or bedding. 12

What to do: If your veterinarian has ruled out a health problem, you can try the following: • Scoop and change your cat’s litter at least once a day. • Thoroughly rinse out the box with baking soda or unscented soap once a week. • Use less litter. Cats like a shallow bed of litter -- no more than two inches deep. • Use a larger litter box. • Use clumping, unscented litter of a medium to fine texture or the litter she used as a kitten. You could try putting a few clean boxes side by side, each with a different type of litter, to see which one your cat prefers. • Don’t use box liners or lids. • Move the litter box to a quiet, lowlight location where your cat is able to see anyone approaching and can escape quickly. The litter box should be out of sight of her food and water dishes. • Add a few litter boxes in different locations, all of which have multiple escape routes. Make sure that children or other animals don’t have access to the boxes. • If your cat is old or arthritic, use a litter box with low sides so she can climb in easily. • Provide a litter box for each of your cats, plus one extra. If you live in a multi-storey residence, place a box on each level.

Surface or location preference and litter box problems If your cat is eliminating on another surface or location, make that area less appealing by: • Adding bright lights or motion sensors to the area • Placing tin foil, or double-sided sticky tape on the preferred surface to repel your cat.

WE RECOMMEND: What not to do • Do not rub her nose in urine or faeces • Do not scold her and carry or drag her to the litter box. • Do not confine her to a small room with the litter box, without first trying other methods for resolving her elimination problem. • Clean up accidents thoroughly with an enzymatic cleanser rather than an ammonia-based cleanser. Then, cover the area with foil or plastic sheeting and block it off for a few weeks to give the neutralizer time to work. If your cat still avoids the litter box, despite your efforts to make it as catfriendly as possible, you will have to consult with your veterinarian.

OUR UNSUNG HEROE: ANASTASIA KUZNETSOVA

How many pets do you own/foster? I have 11 dogs and six cats in total. Six of my dogs are my own, and all others are my foster pets. I have been looking for people to adopt my fosters but unfortunately I've had no luck, some of them have been with me for years.

What were your main reasons for helping to solve the stray issues in the region? We all want to live in a better world but not everyone is doing something to reach that. People often think they cannot change something as it's a global problem, but if we want to change the world, everyone should make small steps. Putting water out for the birds in summer or planting a tree, we can all do something. And I just want to do what I can.

What would your top tips be for someone looking to foster pets? Be patient. The first a few days are not easy. Your new pet can’t know the rules and regulations of the house straight away, they 16

need some time to settle. Most of the pets have been to fosterers, have come through the own dramas, so they might not understand you are trying to help them at the beginning.

How can people help who might not have the space to foster or adopt another pet? Support Trap Neuture Return programmes (TNR) to try and minimise the issue, volunteer at the shelters, feed strays in your local area.

What are the biggest challenges you face? It's difficult to say. I’m not looking for what I’m doing, it’s like a routine for me. The real challenge is to find good homes for my rescues. If I don't rehome, it means I can’t take the next set of strays in.

HOW CAN THE UAE HELP SOLVE THE STRAY PET ISSUE IN THE REGION? Ideally make TNR programmes and stop local breeders. Really we need more shelters as well. We should have a government programme to educate people about spaying.

CAT SHEDDING We all love our cats, but let’s face it, we are not so keen on their excess shedding! With warm weather around the corner brace yourselves as it’s only going to get worse over the next few months. Here are some tips that will help you prepare and decrease all that excess hair. Brush your cat regularly.

Keep them hydrated.

This is the most effective way to reduce your cat shedding hair, as it helps to collect the fur before it falls out.

Cats that don’t drink enough water, more often than not, have dry skin and coats, resulting in the moulting of their hair. So make sure you keep their bowl full to the brim with clean, fresh, cool water.

For a medium to long haired cat, a Flamingo Slicker brush is best. For a short haired cat, we’d recommend a Dual-Sided brush. For the those cantankerous cats out there try the Petmate grooming glove.

Bath your cat once a month. We hear you – no cat is going to enjoy that. But, it will help to remove the excess and undercoat hair. If that is not an option fret not. You can always book a grooming session with us at our First Avenue Mall store, Motor City (With premium grooming facilities) call 04 566 7143.

Change their diet. For a healthy coat, nothing beats a balanced and omegarich diet. Our Fish4Cats contains a balanced ratio of omega 6 and 3 fatty acids to help promote a healthy coat and prevent shedding. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

10 CAT MYTHS,

BUSTED! We know there’s a lot out there that can be overwhelming and can often lead to a misconception about your kitty. These Top 10 myths are often accepted as fact. Truth is, taking them as fact can possibly endanger your cat’s life.

1. You can’t train a cat When we think of agility or tricks, cats aren't really the first ones we would think of, but guess what? They can be trained! Training your kitty the right way can eventually strengthen the bond between her and your family.

2. It’s okay for my cat to eat left overs Most parents don’t mind their cats jumping on the kitchen counter and chowing down on any leftover scraps from dinner. It is not a good idea to let your kitty eat scraps off plates as not only does it encourage bad behavior and make them get used to this habit, it can potentially, be harmful for them to eat human leftovers. Possibly, it can cause diarrhea, as they don't cope well with big diet changes and the seasoning and spices we add in our food.

3. They always land on their Feet You may be astonished by your cat’s talent to superficially land on his feet every time he falls. Some cats do have an incredible talent to transform their position during a fall so they can land on their feet on the ground first. It’s their tail that supports them to do this, but there are always chances that a cat can miss and actually fall to the ground, especially if they’re falling from a great height or if they’ve been pushed all of a sudden.

4. Milk is a great treat for your kitty

from where he can bring germs in. It’s best to make sure your house is disinfected at all times to ensure your kitty doesn’t catch any illness.

6. They hate water Well most cats do hate water when they’re forced into it, especially when their parents say it’s time for a bath. Truth is, many cats are actually captivated by water. They love to investigate it first, but will certainly not enjoy submerging themselves into it.

7. Cats only purr and wag their tail when their happy It is quite a challenge to understand cats at times. Usually, a cat will wag her tail if they want to communicate with their owner. Just like us humans, they also try to communicate through different body language and vocals. As you spend more time with your kitty, you should eventually learn to understand what your cat is trying to express or if he is in pain.

8. They can eat a little Chocolate Just like canines, even a small amount of chocolate can be lethal for cats. It contains high levels of theobromine, which is toxic to both cats and dogs. Most cats won’t eat it themselves, but some owners may think they’re giving their Cat’s a treat. If not monitored it can lead to serious health conditions.

Most of us think that a bowl of milk cannot do any harm to a cat. While kittens gain nourishment from their mother’s milk, the milk of other species is difficult for them to digest. So you may think you might be treating your Kitty with cow’s milk, whereas in reality you might actually give her a stomach ache.

9. My Cat doesn’t really need to exercise

5. Cats that stay Indoor will not get any diseases

10. Cats are Independent and great if you aren’t home often

Another myth, most parents fall into, is that, if their kitty spends all day and night at home she won’t fall sick or is prone to diseases. In reality, cats can contract sickness, even if they don’t go outdoors. Study shows that indoor cats are unprotected from germs that travel through the air or stick to their owner's clothing, footwear, etc. Some of you may also have a pup who mostly goes outdoors, 20

Cats, especially those who live indoors, need daily exercise. You can engage your kitty in play with interactive toys, or by training her to walk on a harness and leash. This will also help your kitty stay at a healthy weight.

Although most cats are quite independent, they all need constant care and companionship. Leaving them home alone for long periods can affect their emotional or physical health. If you have to be out for long, we recommend using a cat sitter or someone that can come and comfort your kitty in your absence.

WHERE TO EAT IN DUBAI WITH YOUR PUP Every dog owner loves to spend time with their dog. But a lot of dog owners in Dubai don’t know that there are a lot of great places where you can take your dog to in Dubai or other Emirates.

And you can even enjoy a nice drink in the evening at The Back Door Boor, JBR. So like I said, there are too many great places to choose from and more video’s are coming.”

And that’s the reason why the social media page: Doggie Adventures in Dubai was created. Owner of the page: Yvonne, loves to take her dog Boefje out on her days off. “We visit restaurants, parks, beaches and much more. But a lot of times when I spoke to other people about it, the first reaction was: I had no idea you could take your dog there. That’s why I decided to take video’s of the dog friendly places that we visit. We go to restaurants, bars, parks, beaches, events, do activities and even go out for staycations. There’s something for every dog owner!” Yvonne says she can’t choose just one favourite place. “There are so many great places to choose from and it depends on your mood where you want to go. But some of my favourite places are Arrows & Sparrows in The Greens that is great for breakfast and for me close to home or Erth by Nabz & G in JLT. Reform Social and Grill has a huge outdoor terrace and they have dog friendly events and activities like puppy pilates as well. But it’s also a lot of fun to spend the day on the water at Hatta Lake or take your dog to the beach in Dubai, Ras-Al Khaimah or Umm al Quwain that you can combine with a staycation at The Barracuda Beach Resort.

You can find Doggie Adventures in Dubai on both Instagram and Facebook. There’s a new video every Thursday and events and promotions are constantly promoted in the Instagram stories.

Cooling Mats

Cooling Beds

As the warmer months approach your pup will be starting to feel the heat. The Scruffs Cooling Collection can help you manage your dog's temperature and give him the relief he needs in the hot weather. The Scruffs Cooling Mats offer one hour relief to your dog which is ideal when he's coming in from a walk. No need to freeze the mat, just leave it in the open air for one hour and it will reach its optimum temperature. Due to the success of the cooling mats we have developed the Scruffs Cooling Beds. These include a cooling mat underneath the breathable mesh, the mat needs to be removed from the bed and left out for an hour to gain optimum temperature.
