Our Holiday Edition

The festive season is upon us, and at Pet's Delight HQ we have been working hard behind the scenes to bring some ho-ho-holiday joy to our furry friends. We have relaunched our Christmas gift boxes for cats and dogs, because we believe treats aren't just for humans. We also have a selection of Christmas goodies, check them out on pages 14-15 and get them before they're gone. Whilst some of us decorate our homes in celebration of the festive period, it might slip our mind that there are traditions which are dangerous around our pets. We list six festive plants that are toxic for dogs on page 5. Getting your first, second, or third pet is a wonderful experience. However, bringing a new family member into your pack is rewarding and challenging in equal measure, which means it's really important you and your family are ready. Ask yourself the 10 questions on pages 10-11 to help figure out if you're prepared for a new furry friend, and if you're wondering whether your child is ready, we go in-depth on this topic on page 19. Please do read these articles, around this time of year many pet-lovers embark on the journey of getting their first or an additional pet, but K9 Friends know all too well the damage that can be done when things don't work out. We hear more from them on pages 20-21. Wanting to create some holiday treats for your furbaby? We have a yummy recipe on page 13! Don't forget to check out our deals section on pages 16-17 - we're showing some love by discounting some of our best sellers. And finally, it is no secret that 2020 has been really tough for most of us. As we settle into our new normal, we think it's really important to take the time to celebrate and enjoy the happy moments where we can. Whether you celebrate Christmas or just New Years Eve, let's all hold our two-legged and four-legged family members tight and mark these happy occasions together. Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year from myself and the team at Pet's Delight. We are wishing you health and happiness this holiday season. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Advice from Pet's Delight

1 Chew that's a healthy safe alternative and the cleaning power of bones Question from @2bzyblack on Instagram

2 My cat loves to eat plastic wrappings. What do I do? Question from @shakey_sharif on Instagram

Answer: For young dogs, chewing is a way to relieve pain that might be caused by incoming teeth. For older dogs, it helps keep jaws strong and teeth clean. On top of this, chewing combats boredom and can relieve mild anxiety. In a nutshell: chewing is natural and important for your dog. There are lots of chews on the market. One of our favourites is the Ziwi Peak Lamb Tripe dog chew. Featuring grass-fed lamb sourced from New Zealand's lush pastures, the Lamp Tripe dog chews are prepared with no added preservatives or flavours, just slowly and gentle airdried. Simple and delicious, these chews will keep your dog happy.

Answer: It might seem strange that plastic bags are attractive to your kitty. This is actually not uncommon though, cats often like the crinkle of the plastic, the smell of the food that was contained in it, or the smooth surface on her paws. It's a sensory experience, but your cat eating plastic is obviously not a good idea. So here are a few ways to prevent it: 1. Take steps to take plastic bags and wrappings away from her completely. If she can't access it, she won't be chewing it. Keeping these items in cupboards can help. 2. Provide different toys that will be more desirable to her, you might want to get toys in different textures so she finds one she likes. It is best not to give in to this kind of barking, or it will gradually get worse and it can be challenging to change this behaviour.

3 My cat gets bored easily. She won't play with a toy for more than a day. What can I do?

My puppy doesn't like going for walks anymore and I have no idea why.

Question from @tofi_the_toffee on Instagram

Question from @jinzillla on Instagram

Answer:

Answer:

Some cats need a little more distracting than others. Here are some slightly unconventional ways to keep them occupied:

There are a number of reasons why your puppy's behaviour might have changed, and they can be mild and easily fixed, or serious.

1. Have a garden? Get a bird feeder, your kitty will enjoy sitting at the window and watching the birds come and go. 2. Hiding cat treats can be hours of fun for your cat, and it's also a good way to encourage exercise and stop her eating too much at once. 3. Have room in your home and your heart for a brother or sister for your kitty? Many (but not all) cats are sociable creatures that would benefit from having company, so if you're open to it adopting another furball might be a great option.

1. Your puppy might be bored. Switching up the walks you go on, doing exercise in the garden or at the park, are all ways to make exercise more fun for your dog and encourage him to get excited about walking again. 2. The wrong diet. Puppy's thrive on a high protein and low carb diet, if this isn't what you're currently feeding, you might want to consider other options. Take a look at our Vitalin, Orijen, Acana, and NEW Billy & Margot brands. 3. He could be suffering from depression. Similar to humans, our dogs can become depressed. We did a whole blog post on this topic: www.petsdelight.com/blog/depression-indogs Some of the top reasons he could be depressed are: • Moving into a new home • A new spouse or baby in the household • Adding another pet • A change in the dog’s schedule • Less interactive time spent with the dog • Loss of a companion animal or owner is one of the most prevalent reasons • Dogs are also extremely intuitive and pick up on our emotions. Sometimes they are good reflections of ourselves and could be responding to our own grievances and anxieties. 4. Your puppy is ill. If it is truly out of character for your puppy to not want to go on a walk, he could be suffering. It's best to take him to the vet to make sure nothing is wrong.

Ask yourself these questions before you decide to get a second dog 1. How well-behaved is your pup?

2. Does your dog like other dogs?

Now’s the time to be honest, is your furry friend generally wellbehaved? Or does he have a few behavioural issues? If the answer to the second question is yes, then it’s really important to work these out before you add to your pack.

Have you socialized your dog much? How is he around other dogs, is he ok with big ones but not with small ones? How about when you’re giving another dog attention, is he ok with it?

Dogs pick up each other’s behaviour and bad habits, so if your dog has anger or anxiety, it’s likely to impact your new dog too. Try working with a trainer, or have another go at training at home to see if you can manage these issues before you consider a new pup. 10

Many dogs are sociable, but many aren’t. Understanding how your dog interacts with other dogs before you introduce a new brother or sister is incredibly important. Small signs of anxiety can be normal and usually a little training fixes it, but aggression and fear can be more challenging to heal. Try taking your dog to a local dog park, to meet a friend’s dog, or even foster a dog to see how they get along.

3. How old is your furry friend? Age can play a big role in dynamics between your dogs. If you have a senior dog, it might not be the best idea to introduce a highenergy puppy (or vice-versa). On the other hand, if your senior dog has lots of energy, a puppy might be a good fit. This is why it’s important to understand your dog around other pups before you bring home a new pet.

4. What size is your dog? Ideally you will have two dogs that are around the same build to minimize the chances of either of them (intentionally or not) injuring the other.

5. Does your dog have any medical issues? If your dog suffers from a medical condition it’s a good idea to speak to your vet about the possibilities of bringing home a brother or sister for him. Bringing another dog into the family could add stress which aggravates existing issues.

6. How much time do you have to spend with your furry friends? Many of us continue to work from home, which means more time with our pets and a lunchtime walk. But if this isn’t the case for you, will you have the time to exercise and spend quality time with a second pet?

7. Do you have space? There are many factors that come into play when figuring out if you have enough space for your new pet, and it can largely depend

on their breed, temperament, and size. When you first bring a new pet home remember they need their own space to call theirs whilst they settle in, if you don’t have the room for this the you may need to rethink adding a new furry friend to your family just yet.

8. Can you afford a second dog? From vet bills to buying quality pet food, the cost of having a second pet can quickly add up. It’s really important to do the maths before you embark on the journey of getting a second dog.

9. Will you still want a second dog in 10 years time? As we know, being a dog parents is a serious commitment. Getting a second dog is an even bigger responsibility, have you thought about this in the long run? Where will you be in 5-10 years? Do two dogs fit in with these plans?

10. Are all of your family members on board? Ok, so you know you want a second dog. And if you have kids, it’s likely they’ll be on board too. But is your partner? Who will have the bulk of the care on their shoulders? You all have to be in on the idea which might involve some tough conversations. At the end of the day, having two dogs is a wonderful adventure, but it’s also a big responsibility. Asking yourself these 10 questions can help you understand if you’re ready for this step. Turn to page 19 for our guide on understanding if your child is ready for their first, or their next pet.

Is your child ready for a pet? “Please can we get a dog? I promise I’ll look after it.” Sound familiar? Your child/children are pushing to get their first, or another pet, but you’re not sure if they’re quite ready. And if you rush before they are, you’ll end up taking full responsibility. Here’s some pointers to help you decide… Do your research It sounds obvious, but you really need to do your research before you go out looking for a new pet. And not only this, but your children need to research it too. Understand the levels of commitment that different pets come with. Buy books, read online articles, and watch YouTube videos to get a grasp of what being a pet owner to this new animal will really be like. Doing so will help you, and your kids, know if you are ready for the responsibility.

Spend time with pets Does your friend have a dog? What about your mum, does she have a cat? Spend time with others pets with your kids to get a feel for what being a pet parent is like. Ask lots of questions, how much does it cost to feed a pet? How many hours a week do they need walking? By understanding the advantages and disadvantages of pet ownership you can make a more informed decision.

Reasons not to get a pet… 1. If your life is already jam-packed, and really you can’t see room for another family member, then it might be best not to get a pet and wait until your kids are older and get help out more, or you have more time. Or, go for a low-maintenance pet like a rodent, that doesn’t need walking and lots of attention. 2. There are a number of allergies in your household. Moderate allergies can be handled, but it’s heartbreaking to bring a pet into your family only to have another family member suffer as a result. 3. You’re worried your child is too rough. Pets can get hurt, and in equal measure they can hurt back. If your child is still growing and becoming more gentle, maybe wait a little while. 4. Finances are tight. Even small pets will cost you money over their lifetime. If money is already a little strained, don’t rush into getting a pet. Having a pet is a wonderful, bonding experience that we really do recommend, but only to those who are truly ready. The stray challenges in the UAE are ever-growing, and getting a pet before you should can have catastrophic consequences for our furry friends.

The year 2020 has been unusual for everyone, but it has given us time to reflect on those who are important in our lives - our family (two legged and four legged), our friends (two legged and four legged) and the heroes who have been keeping us safe in these strange times. Here at K9 Friends we have some shelter heroes of our own; both those who care for our dogs and of course some of our furry residents! If your family is ready to offer a forever home to a new furry member, then look no further.

HANKY – A Confidence Building Hero! Three-year-old Hanky has lived in a home before and proved to be a real hero to his older human brother helping him build his confidence. Hanky is house trained, good with older children, dogs and (most) cats. He is nervous in new situations, can be protective, but enjoys playing with his toys and exploring the local parks. Hanky needs to find a quieter home with experienced owners - he likes the balcony but would much prefer a garden.

CYAN – A Gentle Shelter Hero! Five-year-old Cyan is a local hero here at the K9 Friends shelter, he is kind, gentle and able to handle even the most diva-like of kennel mates. He arrived at K9 Friends in 2015 with his mum and siblings after being found at Khalid Port in Sharjah - we are surprised he is still with us! Cyan is a gentle and docile soul. He is good with older children, cats, dogs and is house trained. He is a little shy at first, but will soon adjust to his new surroundings, and will be playing with the ball with he loves!

MARKO – A Fun and Bouncy Hero! Marko is very friendly, full of energy and bounces around! Marko is lots of fun to play with and best suited to a villa with a garden as he needs a lot of exercise. At 19 months, Marko still thinks he a puppy so he will benefit from some training. Marko needs a home with older children, as little ones may fall over when he zooms around! If you are an active family and your daily life involves long walks and jogs, Marko could be the hero companion for you.

GRIFFIN – A Lifesaving Hero! Four-year-old Griffin is a big strong boy who has donated blood to two separate dogs and possibly saved their lives! He was such a brave boy and gave snuggles to all the wonderful doctors whilst he was there. Griffin is happy, intelligent and lively boy. He loves to play with tennis balls and enjoys swimming. He would make a perfect addition to an active family with older children.

If you think you can give a forever home to one of our shelter heroes, or if you are interested in meeting any of our other residents, please give K9 Friends a call us on 04 887 8739 between 9AM and 1PM, Saturday-Thursday. Adopting a dog should always be a family decision. Dogs should not be given as a surprise present or without the whole family being involved. K9 Friends see ‘unwanted Christmas presents’ dumped at the shelter in January every year. If the time is not right for you to welcome a dog into your family, then why not consider Sponsoring a Dog? Sponsoring a Dog makes a great gift for your K9-loving loved ones and helps K9 Friends care for the 100+ dogs who will be spending Christmas with us at the Shelter.

Here are our top tips for stopping your furry friend from begging at the dinner table. Why do dogs beg? First, let’s understand why he’s begging in the first place. You might think that it’s simply because he’s hungry, but generally begging is a response that’s learned by your dog. If you’re in a habit of giving your dog what he wants if he stares up at you with his big eyes, and you give in – your dog learns that if he begs enough, he’ll get what he wants.

How do we stop it? There are really two main ways to deal with this behaviour. Either we redirect it, or you find ways to ignore him. The latter can be tricky, so here are some tips: • •

How to stop your dog from begging at the dinner table

Keep your dog in a separate room whilst you eat dinner Try throwing your dog a bone or a chew that is long-lasting just before you sit down Feed your dog his dinner right before you have yours, sometimes he’ll be so full he won’t bother begging.

Though it might take a little time and patience to change this behaviour for good, it’s worth it in the long term.

It’s generally a typical evening routine in a dog parents’ household: you sit down for dinner, and the pup thinks he’s joining you. Whilst it’s adorable that your dog wants to spend time with you, it can be a little off-putting to see him sat there waiting for something to fall off your plate. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

Worried about letting your cat out but want her to get exercise? We can help Traditionally, we only really view dog walking as the norm, walking your kitty outside might not be something you have considered before. However, if you’re wanting to make sure she’s getting the right amount of exercise without the worries of her roaming around on her own, going on a cat walk might be for you.

So, you’ve got your harness, but your cat is so used to being independent and roaming around that you’re not sure how she’ll take to it. You need to introduce the harness to your cat slowly, let her sniff it and offer treats whilst you show it to her so she associates the harness as a good thing.

Here are our top tips if you’re wanting to give cat walking a go

Once your cat seems comfortable around it, try putting it on, reward her with treats as you go. Make sure you don’t leave it on her for too long, and try it on a few times before you venture out.

1. Before you start, make sure you have the right gear A harness is a cat-walking essential. But if you’re a cat parent and have never had a dog, you might not know where to start. We have a few cat harnesses for you to choose from, and it’s really important to make sure you get the right size and that you fit it properly. If you need any help, ask our shop team or get in touch with our customer service team at HQ.

2. Introducing the harness

26

Then, start walking your cat indoors, so she understands what it’s about.

3. Taking your cat on her first cat walk If your cat hasn’t spent much time outside before, she will startle easily. We would recommend starting in your backyard (if you have one), or in a place away from road noise and lots of people. You know your cat, so you’ll know after a few attempts if she’s happy cat-walking or not.
