It has been quite a while since I wrote an introduction to our Pet’s Delight Magazine. Due to the challenges around COVID-19, we thought it was best to halt the printing for a little while. Now we’re very happy to announce its back, filled with all of the great nutritional advice, offers, and news that we know our customers love. IS ORIJEN PET FOOD A PURSE-FRIENDLY OPTION?

Orijen pet foods reflect a diet as close as possible to what your dog would naturally eat in the wild. It has 85% premium animal ingredients with high meat inclusions, which will nourish your pup the way nature intended. There is a perception that the Orijen pet foods are expensive, at just under AED 115 for a 2kg bag it is understandable that some pet owners wonder if it's worth the price tag.

When compared to a 'cheaper', popular veterinary brand, it works out like this: You would need to feed 170g for a similar sized dog. For a 3kg bag, this works out as costing approximately AED 6.50 per day, and the bag lasts for 17 days. move them from the door or move away from them if the scent is on you. If one kitty gets visibly agitated, you will need to take things slower. What you need to be doing in this phase is sharing the scents of each cat with the other in a positive way, as it will make the proper introduction more exciting than scary. Then, trade their spaces. Put your new cat where your existing cat spends her time, and vice versa. The idea is that they get used to each other before they meet.

Face to face meeting: Open the door between them just an inch. Let them have a glimpse at each other, if they show no aggression then offer them treats and toys – pet them and praise them. As long as they are calm, let them spend time together 3-5 times a day.

HELP! MY CAT DOESN’T LIKE HER NEW BROTHER Since March-time, most of us have been spending the majority of our days in our homes. For a lot of pet owners, it was the most time they had ever spent with their pet, and what a bonding experience it was. Now life starts to resume some level of normal, the thought of leaving our furry friends can be heartbreaking. How will they cope after having company 24/7 for a long period of time? Will separation anxiety become a problem? These concerns, coupled with the joy many have felt spending so much time with their furbabies, has led to pet owners getting a second pet to keep their first company. What’s important to remember though, is that you might be really excited at the prospect of another furball, but your kitty might not feel the same.

Introducing your cats Sharing scents: Now, the first thing you need to prepare is a private space for your new cat. Here there should be access to food, water, a litter box, something to scratch, and some toys. It needs to be a space that your first cat doesn’t have access to. Your two cats will be able to smell each other through the door, and pick up new scents on you. Allow them to sniff these, if you see fur standing up or one of them starts vocalizing, distract them with a toy and

However, if you experience some agitation, immediately separate the two cats by closing the door. Keep them separate, and share their scents for a day or two – then try again. When both cats seem happy for more than 10 mins, it’s time to move to the next stage.

Spending time together: Introduce, without the door, your two cats in a neutral location. Let them interact for up to 10 minutes up to five times a day. If you notice any misbehaving or fear, shorten the periods of time they spend together. If aggression hits, move back to the previous step. If it’s been about a week and your furbabies have been calm throughout, you can leave them alone for short periods of time – kitty cams are a great way to keep an eye on them when you’re out of the room. If all this goes swimmingly, then they’ll be able to be together 24/7. If you have some spats here and there, try not to worry, just move back a step if you need to and then try again. Eventually, you’re two furry friends will find a way to live in harmony.

My cat had almost all teeth pulled. Can you recommend dry food with softer, smaller kibbles?

How many times a day should a big dog be fed?

Answer:

If your cat has few or no teeth, it can be worrying to find cat food that you know they will be comfortable eating. What might be surprising is that cats can actually manage very well without their teeth. Cat teeth are used for grabbing prey rather than chewing or grinding, which is why they're incredibly pointy. What this means, is that your cat can enjoy a lot of different foods even without teeth.

The amount and frequency of food you should be feeding your pet varies hugely depending on many factors. For this reason, we recommend you always follow the feeding guidelines on the back of your bag of pet food.

It's generally recommended to feed wet food for these kitties. However, many will insist on continuing to eat kibble. Brands like Little Big Paw have kibbles that are smaller than many other brands, which will be easier for your kitty to eat. Try mixing the kibble in with the wet food, then you can be sure your cat is getting the right nutrition and will be comfortable eating, whilst having the texture of the kibble that they desire. Luckily, Little Big Paw does both wet and dry food, so you can stick with the one brand and get everything you need.

The below are just some of the things to bear in mind when feeding your dog: 1. How big is your dog? How much do they weigh? 2. Are they particularly active, or do they spend most of their time on the couch? 3. How dense is the nutrition of the food you're buying? Do you have to feed more to get the right level of nutrition for your dog? 4. Is your dog overweight or underweight? Because there are many variables to this particular question, we recommend choosing a pet food with clear feeding guidelines on the back. If you are worried you are over or under feeding, consult your vet for advice.

As many of these are common items to have in your kitchen, it can be a worry to try and keep them away from your kitty. The best way to do so is to keep them in cupboards out of your cat's reach. And to ensure you keep your furbaby off the counter top when you're cooking.

Answer: Understandably, most pet parents prefer to have all of their fur babies on the same food. Not only is it cost-effective, but it’s not recommended to keep switching your pets food, and having multiple pet foods in the house can make it a challenge to prevent this from happening. If all of your cats are fit and healthy and have the same nutritional needs, then it's ok to feed them all the same pet food. However, depending on the number of furballs you have, and their breeds, you could be dealing with various different needs. Some of your cats might have sensitive tummies, making you opt for a fishbased food, others might have allergies - and some might even be downright fussy. The best way to figure this out is to discuss the dietary requirements of your cats with your vet. Hopefully, even if one of them does have an allergy or a sensitive tum, you'll be able to have all your kitties on the same food.

Why does my rabbit always want to eat?

Answer: Did you know that rabbits are more similar to cows, horses, and guinea pigs than cats, dogs, or rodents when it comes to food? Rabbits are herbivores, which means (like cows) they are designed to graze throughout the day, not consume all of their food in a single sitting. If you are used to other pets that eat twice a day, this can seem excessive. As long as you aren’t leaving a bowl of food that’s too big for your bunny to graze on, it’s probably nothing to worry about. If you notice your furbaby becoming overweight, speak to your vet. Here’s a little info about rabbits and digestion: Unlike cows, rabbits have one stomach to digest their food – also known as monogastric. Us humans are the same, as well as dogs, cats, mice, hamsters, and so on. However, a rabbit has the largest stomach to body ratio than any of the other monogastric animals, and when it comes to water, they actually consume more water per pound of body weight than any other mammal.

A different kind of grain free An important thing to remember about pet food is that it needs to be bound in order to be made into kibble. You can’t blame them for being curious. To conclude, it’s perfectly normal for your dog to follow you to the bathroom. However, if you’d rather they didn’t, it’s fairly simple to teach them to ‘stay’ when you go to the loo. Then give them a treat for being brave when left on their own.

DENTAL MONTH Every year in September we launch our dental month, where we talk about the importance of dental health in pets. Did you know by the age of two, 80% of dogs already have some kind of dental disease?

WHY IS PET DENTAL HEALTH SO IMPORTANT? Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, can cause bad breath, painful chewing, and tooth loss. Bacteria from the gums can also travel to the heart, kidneys, and liver- this is why your pet's dental hygiene is so important. Professional dental cleaning is required to remove plaque and tartar from a pet’s teeth and properly assess the health of his mouth – and for this, the pet needs to be under anesthesia. Understandably, this is something that as pet parents we don’t want our pets to go through very often.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR PET NEEDS A DENTAL CLEAN? You need to check your pet’s mouth regularly to decipher when he needs a dental clean. Tartar may appear as a brown/gold build up on top of the teeth next to the gum line, which is a clear sign. Redness or bleeding are also things to watch out for. Other signals include:

Bad breath

Drooling

Pawing at the mouth

Difficulty chewing

Loose or missing teeth If you notice any of these signs, go and visit your vet.

A child’s toothbrush will do the trick if you don't want to pick a brush up from your veterinarian. We’re living in times where baking banana bread and growing our own basil are the norm, and have taken over our desire to go out for a fancy dinner. For our pets this is great news, for the socialable ones at least, they’re thriving with the extra human affection they’re getting from our influx of time spent in the house. Many of us are investing in our home décor, and one thing we can never scrimp on is a good old house plant. But did you know certain plants can be toxic to your cat?

There are in fact many more plants that can be poisonous to your cat, too many for us to list in this article. What’s best to do with any plant it to keep it out of your kitties reach – elevate them so they aren’t on the floor, hanging baskets are another great idea. If you fear that your cat has got hold of a plant, take action immediately. Contact your vet, and take a photo of the plant in question so the vet is fully informed. PET ’S DELIGHT MAGAZINE

CLEANING PRODUCTS CAN BE TOXIC TO PETS, HERE’S HOW TO KEEP THEM SAFE With us all washing and cleaning more than ever before to protect ourselves and our loved ones against COVID-19, we need to ensure that we don’t accidently harm our pets. From getting chemicals on the paws and trying to lick it off, to inhaling dangerous aerosol cleaners – at the very least this can cause irritation to paws, tongues, and the GI tract. It’s still important to clean your home, just make sure you watch out for the below ingredients in your cleaning products, which we recommend you steer clear of. • • • • • • •

Isopropyl alcohol Bleach, specifically chlorine Hydrogen peroxide Chemical compounds that contain the word “phenol” Ammonia Glycol ethers (found in paints, and some solvents and cleaning products) Formaldehyde

Now isn’t the time to be reducing your cleaning, and we need to be using effective products. However, with pets in the house, we need to follow the below precautions when doing so: • • • •

Keep pets out of the room you are cleaning Make sure the area is well ventilated Do not leave cleaning products unattended Make sure everything is fully dry before letting your pet back into the room
