Objectives

Tooth Restorations

Upon completion of this chapter, the reader should be able to identify and understand terms related to the following: 1. Patient preparation and procedure area. Discuss the purpose of dental ­restorations and their classifications, and identify the steps of the dental restoration procedure. 2. Isolation of the operative site. List the various methods employed to ­maintain a dry mouth area during dental preparations. 3. Preparation of the restorative site. Name the steps in preparing a restorative site prior to placing the restorative materials. 4. Matrix placement. Discuss the necessity for matrix placement, and identify the various types of matrix retainers and their uses. 5. Cement, liners, and base materials. Identify and describe the assorted dental cements, liners, and base materials used in tooth restorations. 6. Restoration placement terminology. Understand and define terminology commonly used in dental restorative procedures. 7. Restorative materials. Discuss the various types and properties of dental ­restorative materials used in tooth restorations. 8. Finishing methods. Identify the methods used to complete, finish, and refine the tooth restoration.

Patient Preparation and Procedure Area Perhaps the most common dental visit is the appointment for examination and prevention, but the restoration of teeth is the most common treatment associated with the dental office. The purpose of a dental restoration is to do the following: Remove the carious lesion (CARE-ee-us LEE-zhun = decay area). Prepare the site for a restorative material of choice with the needed bases and liners.
