Upon completion of this chapter, the reader should be able to identify and understand terms related to the following: 1. Purpose of orthodontic practice and malocclusion classifications. Discuss the orthodontic practice, and describe the classifications and causes of malocclusion. 2. Types and methods of orthodontic treatment. Describe the primary methods of treatment for malocclusion and the different approaches that may be taken. 3. Requirements for diagnosis and treatment planning for malocclusion. Identify the various diagnostic tests and records for planning orthodontic care. 4. Intraoral appliances and auxiliaries used in orthodontics. Discuss the various types of orthodontic appliances and the malocclusions they may be used to correct. 5. Types and purposes of headgear and traction devices. Discuss the need, purposes, and uses of headgear/traction devices and the alternate methods of treatment for recessive mandibles. 6. Assorted and specialized appliances and retainers. Identify the assortment of special appliances and retainers necessary for orthodontic treatment. 7. Instrumentation for the orthodontic practice. List and identify the specialized instruments used in the orthodontic practice.
Purpose of Orthodontic Practice and Malocclusion Classifications Orthodontia (ore-thoh-DAHN-shah; ortho = straight, dont = tooth) is the study dealing with the prevention and correction of abnormally positioned or misaligned teeth. The dentist specializing in this practice, the orthodontist, is a graduate dental student who has completed an additional two to three years of study in orthodontics.
