Objectives
Pediatric Dentistry
Upon completion of this chapter, the reader should be able to identify and understand terms related to the following: 1. Scope of pediatric dentistry. Discuss the practice and duties of a pedodontist and the types of teeth involved with children’s dentistry. 2. Development and growth concerns of the pediatric dentition. List and identify the common concerns related to children’s dental care. 3. Maintenance and preservation of the pediatric dentition. Describe the preventive, operative, and home-care procedures provided to the deciduous teeth. 4. Restorative dental care for the primary dentition. Discuss the restorative care given the primary dentition, and explain the various pulp-treatment procedures available. 5. Control and sedation of the child patient. Explain the need for control and/or sedation of the child patient and the methods employed to accomplish this state. 6. Treatment for trauma and abuse. List and explain the classifications and treatment methods for fractured and traumatized teeth. 7. Use of dental records for patient identification. Discuss the various methods used to establish patient identification from the use of dental and personal records. 8. Miscellaneous child health conditions. Identify the common childhood diseases that may affect the development and condition of the human dentition.
Scope of Pediatric Dentistry Pediatric dentistry is one of the nine recognized specialties of the American Dental Association and is concerned with the care of the teeth and oral tissues of the child patient, from infancy through adolescence. The dentist specializing in this practice is called a pedodontist and has completed dental school with an
