Objectives

Dental Laboratory Procedures

Upon completion of this chapter, the reader should be able to identify and understand terms related to the following: 1. Range and scope of the dental laboratory. Identify the professional ­personnel related to the construction of dental prostheses or appliances made in the lab setting. 2. Dental laboratory equipment. List and identify the assorted machinery and equipment articles necessary for laboratory procedures. 3. Denture construction laboratory procedures. Describe the divisions of prosthodontia into fixed or removable sections and the major differences ­between these areas. 4. Removable partial denture construction laboratory procedures. List and describe the assorted appliances that may be included in the partial ­reconstruction of the oral cavity and dental care. 5. Fixed prosthodontic dental laboratory procedures. List and describe the major fixed prosthodontic items and the variety of crowns and bridgework available. 6. Miscellaneous dental laboratory procedures. Discuss the miscellaneous ­assortment of dental appliances and items used to protect, maintain, or correct dental care. 7. CAD/CAM in the dental laboratory. Explain how computer-assisted systems assist with dental laboratory procedures, and discuss the available units.

Range and Scope of the Dental Laboratory A dental laboratory is the area where laboratory procedures necessary to complete dental health care are accomplished. The laboratory can be located in an independent building or in a specified area of a dental office facility. The dentist or prosthodontist may perform the dental laboratory work, or it may be assigned to others. A dental laboratory technician is trained in this type of work through formal schooling or on-the-job experience.
