and welcome to the 2012 Parade of Homes Plus, presented by the Builders Association of Elkhart County and sponsored by Mid-City Supply.

I would like to thank our participating builders and remodelers for their determination and meticulous efforts to make this year’s Parade a success. The scattered site event showcases 12 new homes and three remodeling projects located throughout the area. Each home offers you the opportunity to discover a wide selection of innovative ideas and current design trends. The members look forward to sharing with you their expertise and quality craftsmanship as you visit this diverse selection of homes. As chairperson, I have been grateful to have a wonderful committee to work with every step of the way in planning and making decisions. Their dedication and willingness to serve on this committee helps ensure the success of this fine event. I would like to give my heartfelt appreciation to Gretchen Helman, who retired in March 2012 after 30 years of tireless service as Executive Officer. A big “thank-you” also goes out to Kim McKibbin who takes over the leadership reigns as our new Executive Officer, and to Sherry Beckwith, Membership Services Director. All three have gone above and beyond to make sure things are running smoothly as planned. President’s Message.

Welcome to the Parade of Homes Plus! The Builders Association of Elkhart County is proud to continue the tradition of showcasing the products and services of our builders and associates in 2012. This year we have 12 new homes on display in a variety of price ranges for the Parade of Homes. For those of you wishing to upgrade your existing home, there are 3 remodeling projects open as well in the Remodelers Showcase. Two of these projects will be open the entire time of the event. They are both extensive whole house renovations. The third is a kitchen remodeling and will be open the final two days of this event, from 1:00-6:00 p.m. What is new in 2012? Youth and Energy! We welcome the Vocational Building Trades with their Parade entry. These high school students are the builders of the future-be sure to see their home. Also new in 2012, higher energy efficiency. Homes built to the 2012 code will use less energy than those built to the old standards. These homes will save money on utility bills and provide greater comfort for their occupants. The economy is moving to recovery and interest rates are very affordable. Let our professionals’ help you improve the home you own, or build the home of your dreams. Now is a great time to build! Much appreciation is given to Karen Johnson, Chairperson, and her committee who have worked tirelessly to make the parade of Homes Plus the best it can be.

The Indiana Quality Assurance Builder Standards provide, for the first time ever, new homebuyers and remodeling customers a way to measure their builder and the project against an industry approved set of standards. These Standards have been developed as a service to new home consumers and remodeling customers. These Standards create a series of performance standards that builders and customers can use to communicate and understand each other’s expectations regarding building/remodeling projects.

A Measurable Difference: What it means to you, the consumer.

The Standards address the most prevalent issues that arise between the builder and the customer before the project, during the project, and most importantly, after the project is completed. All too often it is the unrealized or undiscovered expectations that create the majority of the problems encountered in the building/remodeling process. The Standards will help eliminate these problems before the project even begins. The Indiana Quality Assurance Builder Standards provide you with the confidence that professionals in the industry are handling your project. Make sure your builder of remodeler is a member of the Builders Association of Elkhart County and a Standards Builder and/or Standards Remodeler, and be sure that you receive your Standards manual at contract signing or at closing.

These acronyms represent EDUCATIONAL DESIGNATIONS the builder and remodeler has achieved to improve his/her understanding of the construction industry. They represent many hours of continuing education.

CGP

Certified Green Professional is for single family builders, multifamily builders, remodelers, developers, land planners, architects and designers, energy raters, home inspectors, utilities staff, product manufacturer and supplier.

CGB

Certified Graduate Builder is an exclusive professional designation designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a professional building operation.

CAPS

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist is a professional designation designed to expand your understanding of the aging-in-place market, provide the necessary technical knowledge and resources, and give tools to gain access to the market.

Look for the EDUCATIONAL DESIGNATIONS, QUALITY ASSURANCE STANDARDS and EnergyStar logos, noted above, on each page throughout the builder and remodeler sections.

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

CGR

Certified Graduate Remodelers is an exclusive professional designation program designed to increase a remodeler’s professional credibility by identifying those who demonstrate exceptional business integrity, competence, and a solid track record of consumer satisfaction.

GMB Graduate Master Builder is the highest professional designation awarded to builders. These courses are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals. This designation will enhance credibility as a reliable source of information.
