At the same time, Roots is often used as a symbolism for foundation, which is critical in our work as educators. The

essence of this is very well captured in this quotation from The Lord of The Rings. All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

When I think about roots, what comes to mind is that hairy part of the plant which serves to anchor the plant in the soil so that it can be kept straight and stable. The roots also serve the critical purpose of taking up water and nutrients from the soil so that the plant can grow and develop. Even with sunlight, water and carbon dioxide, the essential ingredients for food-making, a plant will not survive if it has no roots. In other words, roots are necessary for life. Similarly, human beings need to have roots too. Canadian author, Andrea Koehle Jones wrote, “I’m planting a tree to teach me to gather strength from my deepest roots.” Being rooted in our values allows us to reach deep down within ourselves and anchor us to our fundamental principles. We can thus be fed the timeless nutrients of values so that even amidst times of storms, we have the strength to withstand the scouring by the elements. Such are the challenges that may come your way, and in these moments it may require you to stand up against the popular opinions of the times or voice your dissenting views so that you can remain true and committed to your core beliefs. We hope that in your time here with us at Bedok Green, your roots have grown deep into the values of Resilience, Integrity, Compassion and Humility – our school values. We trust that we have provided you with the firm foundation which will hold you up as you journey ahead in life, so that you will always do what is right instead of what is easy. I wish you all the best!
There is a Chinese idiom saying that we need to remember the source of our water, 饮水 思源 [yǐn shuǐ sī yuán], i.e., we have to be grateful; it basically means when you drink the water, you have to remember to think of its source or where it came from. Do not forget its origin. The source of the water you are enjoying to sustain your body must not be forgotten or ignored. On a deeper meaning, it could also mean never forget your origin or roots – your ancestors, mentors, and elders. Where did you come from? What have you learned along the way? Many lessons are taught to us both at home and in school, although we might not even be conscious of them. Ideally, these lessons should stay with us for life; however, we often forget some basic ones. One such lesson is - respect your elders. Respecting your elders is one of those qualities that speak oodles about the kind of person you are, the way you have been brought up and the values you have. The way you treat elders also speaks about your kindness, honest, humanitarianism and other good traits. In your childhood days, you might have asked why you needed to ‘respect your elders.’ As young adults now, some reasons include: • Humanity - We gladly help a child when he is about to fall. Why? It is because he cannot care for himself and we know it. The same thing applies to the seniors. • Knowledge Bank - Another reason to respect your elders is for their wisdom, as they have “seen” it all. They have already experienced the phase of life you are currently in. They know what you are going through and thus can guide you through the unknown. Life would be meaningless without appreciation and respect is the utmost form of it.

Uniformed cadets from SJAB, NPCC and NCC standing proudly during parade inspection.
In her address, Mrs Song shared some interesting anecdotes about the humble beginnings of the school and recounted how the school started with very few staff, facilities and equipment as well as how these difficulties were overcome with the determination and resourcefulness of the pioneer staff. She also spoke about the school values of Resilience, Integrity, Compassion and Humility which are represented in the school crest and song, and exhorted all BGSS students to remain deeply rooted to the core values that the school has imparted to them, and to let these values be the moral compass to guide them throughout life’s journey. She urged all to remember the school’s motto: Believe and Grow, and wished every student success in all their future endeavours. amed B Hj – left): Mr Moh ristina Loke ors (from right at Ch uc rs ed M r n, ee ra on ka Pi The Mrs Usha Bhas a, em Pr N s M , Apandi m Mooi. and Mrs Tan Ki
