About PAssionArts Festival PAssionArts Festival was first mooted in 2012 with the aim of presenting quality arts programmes for the appreciation and participation of residents to celebrate the arts in their community. It has grown in scale and scope to become a leading community arts festival that is eagerly awaited by everyone. In keeping with its previous programming, PAssionArts Festival offers a wide array of performances and art exhibitions, creative workshops, interactive art and craft activities, etc to cater to residents of all races and artistic tastes. It is hoped that through the medium of the arts, especially its hands-on art and craft demonstrations, we are able to forge closer friendships and bonding among residents in our HDB neighbourhoods and private estates. 30,000 residents of different ages, races and backgrounds (guided by artists) cocreating 160 pieces of large-scale art, which will be displayed on the external wall facades of HDB blocks and boundary walls of six private condominiums across the island. These art pieces come under the “Joyous Faces, Brighter Singapore” and “Flag Arts, Brighter Singapore” Residents’ Art Co-creation Series. Featuring sub-themes such as “Racial Harmony”, “Social Cohesion” and “Kampung Spirit”, chosen by local CACCs and GROs, these façade art pieces will contribute to the festive atmosphere as we celebrate National Day. This year, PAssionArts together with 25 external partners will be organising three thematic “Art Festivals within the PAssionArts Festival”. A total of more than 1,000 members and volunteers will be participating in these festivals. The three festivals within festival are: a. The Inaugural PAssionArts Theatre Festival b. The Inaugural PAssionArts Chinese Opera Festival c. The Inaugural PAssionArts-Life Art Society-Kolam Ayer-Ulu Pandan National Day Art Exhibitions Enjoy community arts right at your door steps and celebrate the festival organised for you.

The theme of “Arts Alive” adopted by this Festival Village revolves around the idea of arts being enjoyed both in the day and night. Here the Festival features interactive art installations that integrate into the existing space of the Park that provides endless fun from dawn till dusk. As part of “Arts Alive”, the Festival Village features some 12 HDB blocks and one condominium adorned with captivating Joyous Faces Façade art capturing the smiles of inter-generational families and multi-racial friends and neighbours. While the “creative“ Flag Art co-created by residents shows the cataclysmic clash of colours along with nationalistic values that illuminate the residents towards a brighter Singapore. Look out for the outdoor performances which include: • Ocarina performance; • Cajon Beats; • Feather Art; • Traditional Clay Figurine; and • ‘Splatter Paint’ Flag Art And not forgetting the large visual arts installations that include:

A visitor to the PAssionArts Festival Village in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC will be immediately impressed by the numerous large art installations revolving around lights to signify the well-wishes and hopes of the residents for Singapore’s future while the numerous façade art of joyous faces and flag art represent the happiness of the nation’s achievements. The art installations were a result of the cocreation of residents, community partners and volunteer artists in a series of pre-festival workshops held throughout the GRC. Look out for these striking art installations. i. Opening the windows, seeing the world – A painted wall mural with LED installation (To be displayed at Toa Payoh West CC after the event until end of year) ii. Humaniticity - A Modular cardboard Art installation with fairy lights in mason jars (To be displayed at Bishan CC after the event for 2 months) iii. A large visual facade art piece will be launched on that day, in conjunction with Singapore’s 51st birthday. 12 flag art pieces, each about 12m long, were co-created by the residents and the artists using bold vibrant pops of colours and patterns to form a variety of motifs. Artworks were thoughtfully co-created with local Artists and residents over a series of prefestival workshops from April to June, through the use of recycled materials, which reflect on the everyday lives of Singaporeans. The theme for the PAssionArts Festival in Tanjong Pagar is “A Brighter Singapore” with many of the large visual art installations depicting a progression into the future with hope, zest and spirited passion for life. Participants will be able to identify, the Railway Track installation iconic for Tanjong Pagar GRC, and see how the nation has progressed, move ahead as One and plan for the future generations. Each zone has a particular significance and carries the hopes of our residents towards a brighter Singapore’s future and where we also share the fruits and happiness of our nation’s achievement. Pre-festival workshops were carried out throughout the GRC at various pre-engagement workshops. Some 3,000 residents, students and interest group members etc are engaged through these workshops where they helped to co-create the façade arts and various arts installations.

The concept for Bedok Arts Kaleidoscope 4 revolves around the idea of arts being close to the community and also participatory arts that can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Pre-festival workshops would be carried out from end of May through June at various community locations, and with numerous partners. Through these efforts, 2 location of the division would be decorated with the Flag Arts that’s co-created by Artist Peter Drew and the residents of Bedok Division. The highlights of this Festival include: • Traditional Arts Demonstration and Performance; Chinese Opera, Dikir Barat, Kathakali ( Tentative) • Pour Painting Installation that showcases and encompasses the spirit of Bedok Arts kaleidoscope • Flag Art Decorations with values that illuminates us towards a brighter Singapore will fill Bedok CC • Interest group skill demonstration (for example calligraphy)

Geylang Serai CCC and CACC are pleased to participate in this year PAssionArts Festival with a display of façade art and flag art at 4 blocks (3 Joyous Faces and 1 Flag Art). Residents are welcome to visit the blocks to view our artistic creation of façade art. All the façade art installations will be participatory art created together by artists and residents. Geylang Serai Festival Village consist of two parts where we will have an “arts buffet” to warm up the crowd with a series of fringe activities. Following which will be the highlight of the festival village, where we will have our singing festival that the residents can take part in community singing, and also performances that will feature our sub-groups’ interest groups. It will be a collaborative musical incorporating residents, Geylang Serai Grassroots Leaders, and our existing interest groups. Through a series of singing and dancing performances, residents will be able to take part and enjoy the night under the stars.

For the month of July, PAssionArts Festival 2016 will be taking center stage at MacPherson. Known for its art involvement with the community and for the community, this year’s theme will be about the residents giving back to the community. Since January 2016, several elderly residents have been working with an artist to learn the art of ceramics making. Every week, they get together at MacPherson CC to learn this craft and their creations will be displayed at the festival. They will also be passing on this new skill that they have picked up to children from various community partners and also low income families. This will give the children an opportunity to try out something new and fun! Another highlight of the morning will be the unveiling of the digital print which is done by the residents. This display will be on Blocks 51 and 52 which are just opposite the festival site and residents will get the first look on their art work. Also on the programme will be performances by MacPherson’s very own Line Dancing interest group and other performances. Fringe activities will be available for residents of all ages, bringing them together through the experience of the Arts.

For 2016 PAssionArts Festival, Bukit Gombak Community Arts & Culture Club (CACC) will be working with an experienced dancer to choreograph a dance. The committee previously recruited 20 residents to train under an experienced local dancer and performed the dance during PAssionArts Festival 2015. The committee will also be working with resident artist Mr Koh Chin Hoon from Life Art Society to design artwork with scenery of Bukit Gombak & National Day as the theme. The artwork will be used for a coloring competition. On top of that, we will be having our very own residents who are the winners of the Bukit Gombak Got Talent 2015 to perform for us.

Chua Chu Kang will be one of the divisions participating in PAssionArts presents “TAXI on Call� which is a series of mini plays based on professionally scripted cabbie stories from 25 taxi drivers. With the support from the National Taxi Association, artistic direction from a Creative Show Director and hosting by CACCs, the participating taxi drivers will be trained to form the cast of the mini plays. On top of that, we will have the all-time favorite Keat Hong Chinese Orchestra performing for us a slew of melodies celebrating the arts festival. Furthermore, there will be ITE College West students performing for us their passion for hip hop music. Our homegrown talent, the energetic FKS Sisters will be performing for us the new K-Pop dance moves too.

In 2016 PAssionArts Festival Village, Hong Kah North CO collaborates with Saint Anthony Primary School to present their SYF level Brass Band, Contemporary Dance, Chinese Dance and Choir Group performances in Hong Kah North Community Club on 9 July 2016. Aside to that, Volunteer Guitar Connection (VGC) which was formed in 2004 and operates out of from Hong Kah North CC since 2012 is an interest group from the ‘Volunteer Circle’, under National Council of Social Service (NCSS). They hope to bring joy into their beneficiaries (under privilege) by playing live music and singing, during their weekly volunteer sessions at their respective Volunteer Welfare Organisations (VWOs). On top of the performances from Saint Anthony Primary School, Hong Kah North Community Club’s Indian Culture Dance Group & Chinese Orchestra IG will be engaged in this event. In addition, Visual and Interactive art such as Clay Art Display, Colour! Be Part of Our Community (colouring of a Merlion statue) & Community Kolam will be introduced before the performance kick off.

The Yuhua PAssionArts Village will be transformed into a “HOME” which includes living room, master bedroom, kitchen, car porch, guest room and children room. Each room will feature art sculpture created by recycled materials and participants will get to make their customized sculpture. From making of the bottled lamps in master bedroom to flower vase making in living room, we welcome you “HOME”! Highlights of arts programmes & activities under i) Performing arts A continuous music performance which includes Cajon performance by 500 community percussion members of all ethnic groups, Ukulele Sing-along led by 80 Jurong GRC Ukulele interest groups, Choir singalong with 800 community singers, singing led by a 5 piece Jazz Band. ii) Visual arts - Making of upcycle art sculpture which includes handbags, flower vase and lamp from recycle items like plastic bottles and aluminium tin cans. - Co-create the Yuhua Flag Art at the village which will then be displayed on the façade of Yuhua blocks and along the common corridors located prominently to celebrate National Day 2016. - Partnering the Preschool Market (A social enterprise), Yuhua CACC put together a Tinker Kit Art exhibition of artworks created by 17 children of aged 4 to 6 years old and their parents.

With the theme of “Singapore, Our Garden City”, Ayer Rajah celebrates PAssionArts Festival 2016 and this year’s National Day by displaying Flag Art that spreads across 2 blocks of HDB apartments in Pandan Gardens using the paintings of flowers of different varieties that symbolise our garden city. These colourful façade art proudly co-created by the residents and volunteer artists, will certainly beautify and inject colour in the neighbourhood to captivate residents and visitors alike. Stay back to join the residents in enjoying the energetic dance performance by the special dance guests, K-Pop Dance IG and the wide range of interactive art and craft activities in the Festival Fringe all through the day from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

FESTIVALS WITHIN FESTIVAL – INAUGURAL PASSIONARTS CHINESE OPERA FESTIVAL In conjunction with the PAssionArts Festival, the Inaugural PAssionArts Chinese Opera Festival (COF) will be held from 18 June to 30 September 2016 at Marine Parade Community Club, Queenstown Community Centre and Golden Theatre. Jointly presented with the Chinese Opera Institute and Nam Hwa Opera Limited, the Inaugural PAssionArts COF will showcase more than 85 Chinese Opera excerpts of various dialects by 45 People’s Association and Community Chinese Opera Groups over 15 show nights. The Inaugural PAssionArts COF will offer Singaporeans a glimpse into the past when “street wayang” was a popular form of entertainment for the older generation. The Festival aims to add to the vibrancy of the Chinese Opera scene in Singapore and to preserve this important aspect of our cultural heritage. Audience will feel a sense of nostalgia when they watch the performances at the different venues. The Inaugural PAssionArts COF will kickstart at Marine Parade Community Club on Saturday, 18 June 2016 while the Festival at Queenstown will start from 2 July 2016. The Finale Show will be held on 30 September 2016 at the Golden Theatre. On top of Chinese Opera excerpts of various dialects, audience will also be treated to a performance by 97 year old veteran Chinese Opera performer Mr Hou Shen Hu. The night will end with a specially choreographed closing item and mass singing of 传灯. Programme 1 TAXI-On Call, Stories of Taxi Drivers Keep a look out for ordinary people become extra ordinary in an unusual theatre experience that is unlike what you have ever seen. Co-presented by PAssionArts Festival and the National Taxi Association, “Taxi-On Call” will involve 25 professional taxi drivers who will take centre stage to share their life experiences and spellbound you with their heart-warming stories and acting abilities. PAssionArts pays tribute to Singapore Taxi Drivers for their contribution to the nation. Performed in Mandarin and directed by Ms Lim Hai Yen, it will unveil the talent of the drivers.
