Welcome Message
WELCOME MESSAGE Dear Friends, Thank you for picking up a copy of the PAssionArts Festival Guide. The 6th edition of the nationwide arts festival, PAssionArts Festival, will be held from Saturday,1 July 2017 to Wednesday, 9 August 2017. The Festival theme, ‘Arts of Wonder, One Nation’, expresses the hope of the PAssionArts team for all to use arts to showcase the creative and innovative spirit of Singaporeans. The Festival also aims to foster a sense of togetherness and use arts to celebrate National Day! From 1 July to 9 August, you can look forward to over 500 art activities and programmes islandwide, including visual art displays and performing arts co-created by residents and artists. Through the collective efforts of 88 Community Arts and Culture Clubs (CACCs), the Festival will bring arts closer to your neighbourhood and at the same time, create an opportunity for all to showcase our shared values and hopes for Singapore. What is special about this year’s Festival is that most of the 48 ‘Arts of Wonder’ Festival Villages would contain elements of Multi-Ethnic Traditional Arts with the aim to promote cross-cultural appreciation. Some of the highlights include the LandArts, MallArts, BeachArts, EveryoneArts, ScienceArts, and two Festivals within Festival. You will also get to see Plank Art, as art installations, featuring multi-racial figurines, iconic landmarks representing the local communities’ heritage and characteristics, and even landscapes of places that we hold near and dear, at over 200 heartland locations. Come and be inspired by the many Festival Villages. Better still, speak to our PAssionArts volunteers if you wish to be part of the big PAssionArts Family. To find out more, check out our website at facebook.com/PAssionArtsSG.
Yours sincerely, The PAssionArts Family

Highlights
Launch: 1 July 2017, 4.30 pm
Step into an arts wonderland at LandArts @ Bishan - Ang Mo Kio Park, where for the first time in Singapore, the park’s landscape has been integrated with the art installations. This is the first land art project undertaken on such a massive scale.
Young or old, all you need is a sense of wonder in the World of Nature, a fantasy world of gigantic flowers. Towering water lilies and blooming lily bud flowers created from 20,000 planks, intricately hand-painted, are a testament to our colourful, multi-ethnic heritage. Interact with engaging installations inspired by fairy tales at our Kids’ Art Village, where kids can groove to the beat at percussion workshops, or watch live performances like marching band, percussion and reader’s theatre.
Highlights
Dance into a world of crescent moons and angelic dancers. Admire the colourful artworks created by children with special needs and beneficiaries of voluntary welfare organisations, or join in and sing along with our choir. Plenty of diverse performances for all to enjoy.
Co-created by Pre-schools, Primary Schools, Special Needs Schools and various voluntary welfare organisations, 15,000 residents, artists and students through the course of 70 workshops.

Multi-Ethnic Traditional Arts Festival:
Chinese Opera is making a comeback in style. The Singapore kind. Through PAssionArts! Marine Parade leads the charge with its Chinese Opera Festival. It features fan favorites, well-known stories from our three main dialect groups (Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese) each with their unique styles of singing, music and movements. The festival’s highlight is a concert style Chinese Opera, where we see operatic singers without their signature costumes or makeup.

Over in Queenstown, the night air resounds with gongs and cymbals from Chinese Opera performed in the main dialects. Don’t miss the best part of the festival – the Story of Singapore Legend, Sang Nila Utama, retold in Cantonese Opera. Performers are dressed in traditional Malay costumes but sing in Cantonese Opera melody. The programme for the evening also features a 10-member choir and six Cantonese Opera excerpts.

Scenes of Singapore Streets
NLB Level 1 Atrium 29 July, Saturday, 2.30pm
As the saying goes, a picture speaks a thousand words. Singapore continues to evolve even after 50 years of independence. Streets that you traverse day on day may not be around in the next 5 years. And photography is the best way to collect and preserve memories of yesterday streets’ scenes. The National Day Photography Exhibition 2017 exhibits these photographs of Singapore street scenes taken by the community photographers and residents from all over the island. The photos, modest in nature, cover streets’ scenes of neighbourhoods

including natural features, built heritage and people. Besides the exhibition, visitors can look forward to weekend photography workshops and activities. These photos will be a collection under National Archives of Singapore and a part of Singapore History for us to reminisce when we celebrate SG75 and SG100.
The National Day Photography Exhibition is a collaboration between People’s Association - PAssionArts, National Library Board and National Archives of Singapore. The exhibition will be ongoing from 29 July to 5 August 2017.

Health through Art sends a powerful message to heighten our awareness of Diabetes. Three imposing installations attempt to change your perception of sweets. An oversized ice cream tub is set up to look like a mousetrap to bait its prey. Don’t walk into the Sweet Trap. A gigantic cup of cold, refreshing sweet drink is a sea of possible health risks with bitter sweet consequences. Don’t dive into it. Watch out for the Giant Ants! What message are they telling you? Lifestyle changes also include efforts to care for our environment through upcycling. Waste materials are cleverly transformed into art pieces at this ParkArts

Co-created by December Pang, our resident artist, and residents.

Step aside X-Box 360, PS5, Nintendo and Wii. Gasing, Five Stones, Congkat, here we come! We can have fun at not even a fraction of the cost of today’s gaming stations. Revive our rusty skills at these traditional games that we have forgotten. Introduce them to our children. Show them that we can make our own games by sewing five stones using batik, and co-creating and decorating the largest congkat ever. Mall goers, don’t shop till you drop. Instead, take a break and immerse yourselves in some traditional Malay performances like Dikir Barat and Gamelan, buskingstyle at Eastpoint Mall.
