DEYI | OUR JOURNEY IN THE ARTS
OUR JOURNEY IN THE ARTS Our school strongly believes that the arts is a means for our pupils to express their inner thoughts and feelings and showcase their diverse talents.
2015 marks a significant milestone in Deyi’s arts history. Our school started with the following arts co-curricular activities: Art Club, Brass Band, Choir, Dance Club, Guitar Club, Harmonica Club, English and the Mother Tongue Languages Drama and Debating Societies in the early 1980s. Over the years, Deyi has made significant progress in building a strong arts culture, forging partnerships with arts organisations, scaling new peaks of excellence and engaging the community in the performing arts. Our school strongly believes that the arts is a means for our pupils to express their inner thoughts and feelings and showcase their diverse talents.

DEYI | OUR JOURNEY IN THE ARTS
At the turn of the 20th Century, Deyi embarked on the development of 21st Century Competencies through the arts, thus implementing Dance- and Drama-inCurriculum programmes. In addition, in line with Singapore’s vision of becoming a global arts city, Deyi streamlined its arts programme. The strong, vibrant performances of our students in the arts resulted in Deyi becoming a pioneer Niche Programme School for non-independent and non-autonomous government schools in 2005 and a Centre of Excellence in Performing Arts in 2007.
05
The Centre of Excellence in Performing Arts Award reaffirms our commitment to kindle a passion for the arts not just in Deyi but also within the community. Our vision: ’Arts Belong to Everyone’, gives us the opportunity to make the performing arts accessible, affordable, attainable and enjoyable for everyone. We want students to progress from just being an audience to becoming active participants in the arts and creative citizens. We also want to create platforms for teachers from cluster schools as well as the community to share their knowledge and expertise in the arts, hence, levelling up our teachers’ competency in this area. We hope to continue being an arts incubator – one that fosters the desired National Education objectives and shared values of our nation, as well as, one that ignites the spark of creativity in our students.

Arts Curriculum in Deyi, comprising, Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama, forms an integral part of holistic education. Through an experiential studentcentric approach, the comprehensive curriculum promotes the learning of the arts to build 21st Century Competencies as well as to nurture students to be confident youths. The Visual Arts Curriculum places emphasis on visual literacy by getting students to explore different mediums, express their ideas in various modes and articulate aesthetics values. In music classes, students explore a variety of genres and styles both using conventional and Information Technology mediums. Students are given opportunities to play musical instruments too. All lower secondary students go through both the Drama-in-Curriculum and Dance-in-Curriculum Programmes. The Drama-in-Curriculum Programme aims to hone speech and communication skills. Students with greater interest and talent in drama have the chance to sit for the Trinity-Guildhall Speech and Drama Examination in Secondary 2. The Dance-in-Curriculum Programme seeks to develop students’ dance techniques while improving motor skills, stamina, flexibility, musicality and rhythm. Students are also introduced to dance composition and choreography.
