SCHOOL LOGO The logo symbolises the four vertical lines of the letters ‘M’ and ‘I’ which represent ‘Millennia’ and ‘Institute’ respectively, and translates them into four arcs. The blue arc acts as the firm foundation for the other three arcs to pivot or propel themselves forward. It also signifies the strong values of integrity and resilience, respect and responsibility that are cultivated within each individual in Millennia Institute. The largest red arc sheltering the smallest red arc on the right captures the close relationship between teachers and students, in which the teachers act as mentors, supporters and motivators. The red arc on the left signifies the management and support staff playing an auxiliary albeit significant role in the Institute. As a holistic entity, the logo is a 3-dimensional sculpture, each arc is distinctive and unique in design but in synergy, they form a dynamic force, both confident and optimistic.

PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD full of hopes and aspirations. Now, as they leave the institute, I encourage them to continue to persevere in their studies, and work towards their academic goals with the growth mindset that there is a much bigger world out there, just waiting for all who dare to discover and to make their mark in.
It seems almost like it was yesterday when I welcomed this year’s graduating PU3s to MI in January 2014 – a sea of fresh, eager faces, unsure and hesitant, yet excited and
06
To all Millennians, I say, you have to take that ‘leap of faith’ like Joseph Schooling and Yip Pin Xiu did, to pursue your passion beyond the academic. Yes, it is true that there is little to no safety net when you pursue your passion and fail; but you will survive. You can and will try again. Moreover, paper qualifications alone can’t guarantee you a stable job in this VUCA world either. Discover your passion and
nurture your talents, so that these will spur you to learn, unlearn and relearn throughout life to achieve success. Many of you might have to leave the comforts of your Singapore home to earn a living overseas. But you will thrive, because the ability to create something out of nothing and to make it when others think we can’t, is part of our Singaporean DNA. It is this entrepreneurial dare Minister Ng Chee Meng challenges us to take up – the courage to take risks, fail, and fail again, yet never to give up at finding the best solution. It is this divine discontent as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong puts it — always being not quite satisfied with what we have, always being driven to do better — that will see you through to succeed in this VUCA World.
Be thankful for all that you have. In Singapore, you have more than what you need to be happy, as compared with many others in the world you have met through OVIA or MI.World trips. So, let’s complain less, and give more. As Muhammad Ali puts it, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” I hope that you will always remember to pay your rent on earth, because you are a Millennian – a Learner, Thinker and Leader with Integrity, who will take Responsibility to answer for your own life, because you Respect life. Stay Resilient. Stay relevant. Mrs Tan Wan Yu Principal

VICE-PRINCIPALS’ NOTE
The year 2016 has been an eventful and exciting one for Millennia Institute. Academically, we were off to a good start with the release of the 2015 GCE A-Level Examination results. The Class of 2015 built on the achievements of their seniors by securing one of the best ever results in the Institute’s 12 year history, with an increased number of students with good scores that would enable them to qualify for entry into the local autonomous universities. This achievement is a strong testament to the 08
perseverance, hard work and good effort made by both staff and students in the area of academic learning. This was also reinforced by the strong belief that our staff have in our students to excel, which is in line with our culture of Care and Aspiration. The Institute’s flagship SkillsFuture Programme, which seeks to develop 21st Century Competencies in students, was also reviewed and revamped to make it more relevant for the students, and in the process received much positive feedback from both staff and students.
Millennians also did the Institute proud by clinching prestigious awards and commendations in various external competitions. For example, both our Drama Club and Malay Cultural Society achieved Certificates of Distinction at the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Art Presentation for Drama. To top it off, we were the only A-Level institution to achieve the commendable feat of a double distinction for SYF Drama! In addition, a team of PU1 students clinched the Innovation Award at the West Zone Student Science Symposium despite the stiff competition they faced. These are just but a few of the accolades that our students have achieved this year.
also helped to liven up our Institute spirit, and provided platforms for students to interact beyond their classes. As the Institute continues to enhance our physical environment to make it more conducive for learning, we look forward to the use of a new classroom block with six new classrooms. This will help to resolve the classroom crunch, and provide us with the opportunity to redesign these classrooms and experiment with different ICT set-ups to encourage seminar-style lessons and collaborative learning. As we reflect upon and take stock of 2016, we have much to be proud of, and also much to look forward to in 2017, as we continually refine and review our programmes to create more meaningful and deeper learning opportunities for our students. We continue to hold strong to our mission of nurturing talents to achieve success in the different domains and inspire our students to scale greater heights of achievement.
We continue to improve our student development curriculum and programme to bring about holistic student development and character building. We had our inaugural PU1 bonding camp at the start of the year to help the PU1s connect with their class and build their sense of belonging to the school. Staff and students came together to engage in sports and games at our Play Fiesta, which became a night of good fun, cheers and culminated in Ms Tng Ya Wen Valerie the singing of our Institute song with pride and Vice-Principal gusto. OUR STUDENT LEADERS
2016 BATCH 36
SENATE Following the merging of three student leader councils to form one Student Council in 2015, it was decided to gather the student councillors as well as all other student leaders into a larger consultative conglomerate called the Senate to give Millennians a decisive role in the running of the school. The Senate aims to encourage our student leaders to be active learners, thinkers and leaders who work collectively with the student body to achieve the common goal of enhancing Millennia Institute’s school culture. The Senate is made up of the captains and presidents from sports CCAs, clubs, societies, aesthetics CCAs; as well as Level and House representatives, House captains and the student councillors. Senate meetings are spearheaded by the student council’s executive committee. During Senate meetings, student leaders discuss how to best resolve various problems that have been identified in Millennia Institute, and also debate proposals about how to improve the overall school culture. Some
2015 BATCH
aspects that have been discussed are procedures to encourage students to keep the school environment clean, as well as ways to give more recognition to Millennians who have participated in competitions. Through our various meetings, we have successfully proposed solutions to these issues. For example, in order to have cleaner classrooms, we have implemented a point system that, with the help of our OSOs, awards points to classes according to how tidy they are. In this way, we have successfully managed to bring together all the various student leaders in MI to work together with the common goal of improving the quality of student life in Millennia Institute – something that had in the past been left to the Student Council to handle. Looking back on 2016, we believe that the Senate has done well. The Senate is a bold initiative; it is a concept that is not seen in many other schools in Singapore. In 2017, we hope that the Senate will continue with its mission to create effective changes in MI for the betterment of the school community with a new batch of senators. Some of the issues that we would like to tackle in 2017 include thinking of ways to encourage Millennians to greet their teachers more frequently, as well as propose sustainable and practical methods to encourage Millennians to be more active in keeping their classrooms and the school clean. We hope that through the Senate, the school’s culture will continue to strengthen and that all Millennians will come to be proud of being a part of this Institute. We would like to thank all the senators for attending senate meetings and for actively offering suggestions to bring good change to MI. Without their wholehearted participation and presence, the Senate could not have been this successful. We thank them sincerely for all their contributions and support for the Senate, and hope that their willingness to serve and create a more caring and aspirational environment in MI will percolate to the general student population. Written by: Christiann Priyanka Augustine (15A4), Vice-President of Senate

STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council’s aim is to foster an inclusive school environment where diverse groups of students are able to maximise opportunities to contribute to our school. The start of the year marked the last lap of our work as members of the inaugural body of the newly merged Student Council. Overall, it has indeed been a fruitful and enduring journey for all of us. The Council’s biggest event for 2016 was the PU1 Orientation Week. The theme for this year was ‘Emergence’, as we hoped that our new faMIly members would likewise emerge from the orientation stronger, with the support of each other. The theme was also an allusion to the revival of the house system, which was introduced to our new faMIly members. Despite encountering many setbacks and unexpected turns of events, all of our councillors persevered and in the process acquired many valuable pointers about leadership, communication and adaptability. We
VICE-PRESIDENT OF STUDENT ACTIVISM: Sangita Arul (14B5) SECRETARY: Aileen Yeoh Ying Yan (14S3)
would like to thank our school leaders, teachers and fellow Millennians for their support and enthusiasm in being a part of the Orientation Week with us. The 2016 Student Council Investiture was also a special one as it marked the first time that we recognised the contributions of not just the Council, but also all of our student leaders in an official ceremony that recognised the contributions of our House Captains, CCA leaders and Class Representatives. The theme for this year’s Investiture was ‘Convergence: In Unity We Transcend’. It represents our hopes as we look forward to the unity that will be engendered among our student leaders, as they strive to bring glory to Millennia in their respective roles. We are moreover proud of our breakthrough in establishing the MI Senate, where our student leaders come together to discuss important school issues on behalf of the student body. We believe that every student leader, even if they are not in the Student Council, has a key role to play in Millennia Institute in improving the school’s welfare and environment. We hope that the Senate will continue to flourish in the years to come, to be an effective body that works for the betterment of the school.
WELFARE ADMIN: Tan Wei Keong (14B4)
We would like to thank our fellow councillors for their effort, leadership and commitment in making each and every school event that we organised a success. We would also like to thank our school leaders and teachers for their constant guidance. Lastly, we would like to thank our fellow Millennians for their encouragement and for putting their trust in us to serve them as councillors.

ANGKLUNG KULINTANG ENSEMBLE 2016 has been a fruitful and eventful year for the MI Angklung Kulintang Ensemble (MIAKE). In addition to running traditional folk pieces at various school and public performances, we have sought to stretch ourselves and expand our repertoire to include famous movie soundtracks and classical tunes with modern twists. Our performances this year have included Institute Day, MI Orientation 2016 and the MOE-SYF Celebration @ The Malls (West Mall) that took place in July. The ensemble also had the valuable opportunity to share our musical expertise when we arranged and facilitated a learning activity for school leaders in an MOE Zonal meeting held at MI, teaching them how to play a popular folk song and helping them to gain a better appreciation of the aesthetic arts. While we strive to give of our best in each and every concert, we are also glad that through our shared experiences,, we have developed strong bonds and friendships with one another. Every CCA practice is a positive experience, as we know that all of us are working towards a

MIAKE would like to extend our gratitude to the following teachers: Ms Irene Thong, Ms Kelly Tan and Mr John Goh for their help, understanding and support. The ensemble would also like to thank our conductor, Ms Alicia De Silva, for her relentless guidance and encouragement. Looking forward, MIAKE has set our sights on winning the Distinction Award at the 2017 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) once again. With teamwork, perseverance and hard work, nothing can come in the way of our strong determination to succeed. Written by: The AKE Committee

ART CLUB Art Club is a student-directed CCA that aims to expose our members to the different forms of art around us, and to inspire them to express themselves through painting and craftwork. This year, the Art Club embarked on a project to involve our members more deeply in the Club’s activities by having them share their niche interests and artistic talents with the rest of the club. Our ex-president, Lee Jong Min, kicked off the project with a lesson on human figure drawing based on body proportions. Subsequently, we were briefed about how to use different watercolour techniques to paint common objects around us by Fatin Rumaisha, our current president. Equipped with paintbrushes, the members then combined what they had learnt and eagerly set off to create observational paintings of various scenes around the school. After experimenting with watercolour brushes, we were next introduced by two other members, Tan Li

Xuan and Ng Jing Hui, to the art of crocheting with pins and needles and succeeded in producing pretty little souvenirs for our homes. We returned to drawing towards the end of the year as Rebecca Wong Wei taught us the technique of stippling, which is the use of multiple dots to create the effect of shading. The works that we produced were exhibited on the Art Club’s notice board after every lesson. On the whole, these lessons were well-received by our members, not only because they let us develop our leadership and presentation skills, but also because they allowed us to learn from one another and grow together as artists. We applied the skills that we had been taught in school-organized events like the annual MI social bazaar. This year, our members bought notebooks and crocheted intricate designs on the covers with thick and colourful threads. Each member contributed one to two notebooks, which were then sold at the bazaar to raise funds for charity. We also helped to welcome international exchange students from Okinawa and Italy by engaging them in craft activities such as 3D pen drawing and clay-making.

We would like to thank the Art Club student leaders and our Art Club teachers, for their guidance this year. In 2017, we intend to work on what we have learned by going outside the school to find more challenging subjects to paint and render in artistic form.

BADMINTON RECREATION CLUB The Badminton Recreational Club seeks to enable students to develop their passion and interest in the sport of badminton. We aim to develop our members to be physically and mentally fit so they can perform at an optimal level during competitions. We also aim to foster friendships and camaraderie among our members, develop sportsmanship and have fun at the same time. Between April to May 2016, the club sent a small contingent of players to represent Millennia Institute at the Schools A Division Badminton tournament against 19 other schools. This was the first time in our short history that the club had participated in a national competition. Although we were eventually placed in 14th position, our members still felt a deep sense of achievement after battling fierce opponents from rival schools with more established teams.
We hope that more of our members will step up to the challenge of training hard and representing Millennia Institute in future matches, as well as in future A Divisions. Not only do we want the CCA to grow as a whole, we also want every member to grow individually as well in terms of skills and overall fitness. Most importantly, we want to foster stronger bonds between members, using the spirit of competition to develop our strengths and overcome our weaknesses, while learning from each other in a supportive environment. We want to thank the outgoing captains, seniors as well as our teachers for motivating us throughout our maiden journey through the A Division tournaments. They helped to push us to our limits by encouraging us to lift our game up to the next level. We will not let them down. Written by: Yang Kok Howe (15B2)

BASKETBALL Building upon last year’s experiences, both the Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball teams made a concerted effort to ensure that we would be better prepared for A Division this year. Besides increasing our training intensity, we also participated in smaller events such as the Raffles Institution Basketball Invitation Cup in order to hone our skills and put into practice what we had learned. These matches gave us the invaluable opportunity to play with the top contenders of the A Division, making us more aware of our strengths and weaknesses, which thus allowed us to be more mentally and physically ready for the main event. However, luck was not on our side in the draws for the A Division group matches, as both teams found themselves grouped with several powerhouses. We were nevertheless determined to fight to the end, which allowed many of our matches to end in close fights as we sought to do our best, playing our hardest and giving each other constant encouragement and support.
Despite the numerous setbacks, both teams can proudly hold their heads high and say that indeed, “we have given it our all”. This year’s A Division tournament has taught us the importance of having resilience on the court. Every athlete encounters tough matches where the odds are against them; to give up would mean surrendering all chances of winning, as well as be a display of poor sportsmanship. We have also learnt the importance of teamwork and how having a cohesive team can go a long way towards maintaining high morale and having a good game. We will continue to strive and train harder for next year’s A Division and will definitely come back stronger in order to vie for the title. BOWLING The year 2016 has been an arduous journey for the Millennia Institute bowlers. With the graduation of our senior players, we had to restructure and step in to fill their shoes. Despite many of us starting with little or no experience in the sport, we were fortunately armed with a passion and a strong desire to improve. The team showed resilience throughout our training sessions as we pushed and helped each other to prepare for the gruelling tournaments, and we grew in self-discipline and determination. Under the stern but caring supervision of Coach Samuel, as well as the constant support from our CCA teachers, our bowlers climbed a steep learning curve to improve our skills. We were able to strengthen our physical and mental fitness, both in and out of the bowling alley. This year, our bowlers participated in the 23rd National Schools A Division Tenpin Bowling Championship held in April. Although we had to face several powerhouses in the same group stage, we did not let ourselves be

disheartened, and cheered each other on at every match as our team battled these powerful opponents. Our bowlers displayed great team spirit and gentlemanly respect to all our opponents. These efforts paid off as our girls’ and boys’ teams secured overall school placings of 9th and 8th respectively. The American educator Marva Collins once said, “Success doesn’t come to you. You go to it.” With that advice in mind, our team is already planning ahead for next year’s 24th National School A Division Tenpin Bowling Championship. By motivating each other to strive despite the odds and by pushing ourselves harder during our intensive training sessions, we hope to achieve a better performance in the upcoming year, and to do our school proud. CHINESE CULTURAL SOCIETY The Chinese Cultural Society (CCS) has achieved good results in all the activities that we organised and participated in this year. Through these activities, the CCS managed to give our members multiple opportunities to learn more about Chinese culture, as well as to develop thinking skills and cohesion as a team. One major highlight of the year was the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Chinese Drama Competition, which we entered using our own adaptation of “Journey to the West 2016. We were elated to win the Certificate of Accomplishment for the Junior College/Centralised Institute category, as the award served as testament to the undivided commitment and hard work that all our members had put in. In the process, our members also learnt how to cooperate with one another under stressful conditions, while at the same time improve our thespian skills.
CCS also organised exciting school-based activities such as the Chinese Chess Competition in August, when we invited our classmates and peers to learn this traditional game and to put their cognitive skills to the test. We performed during the Chinese New Year Celebrations in school, so as to encourage the school population to better understand and appreciate Chinese culture. As a club, we also attended various workshops where we mastered traditional Chinese painting and Chinese knot-making. All these activities and workshops allowed our members to be exposed to and gain a better understanding of Chinese traditions. CCS will continue to organize and promote interesting programmes for both its members and the school community. Our members will continue to further develop their competency in the Chinese language and to further their interest in Chinese culture, while also making more friends who share a common interest with them. CCS will remain a united and harmonious family where all of us enjoy what we learn. Written by: Wang Yongyi (15S1)

DRAMA CLUB The Millennian Stage aims to develop student performers to be resourceful thinkers, strong communicators and adaptable leaders. Student performers undergo rigorous training to increase the range of their acting abilities. This year, our members attended the Fitzmaurice Voice Workshop where we gained greater awareness about ourselves, learning about how to use our physicality on stage as well as various techniques to control our vocals during performances. We enjoyed a fruitful and triumphant year in 2016. Through the dedication of our student performers, we were able to make history by achieving a Certificate of Distinction at the Singapore Youth Festival Drama Competition (Junior College/Centralised Institute Category) in spite of the strong competition from the other schools. Our dramatic performance of Mark Wheeller’s emotional and tragic play, ‘Hard to Swallow’, involved all club members. It was thanks to this concerted team effort, a strong desire to strive for excellence, and the continuous support of our teachers and instructors, that we were able to accomplish so much.
To prepare for the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF), we performed a preview of our competition play at #TellAStory at Woodlands Regional Library. This provided us with the invaluable experience of communicating to a live audience, and allowed us to gauge how an audience would respond to the play before the competition. Additionally, we have also performed at the MI PU1 Orientation 2016 and at other school events. In the process, we became more familiar with various aspects of work for the stage, such as backdrop design, sound and costume-making. All of these were important in helping us to improve our skills, bond as cast and crew and deliver a polished final performance. The Millennian Stage aims to mount at least two theatrical productions per year. For all productions, our students act, design, engineer sound and lighting under the supervision of the coach and staff. Though we have accomplished much this year, we shall certainly not rest on our laurels and will continue to strive for greater heights as a team in the years to come. ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLUB The Entrepreneurship Club (E Club) aims to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship in students and inspire them to become future entrepreneurs. In the process, E Club members became actively involved in external events, competitions, in-house sales and the organisation of the annual MI Social Bazaar. At the MI Social Bazaar in April, the E Club not only set up their own stalls, but also encouraged other CCAs and students to utilise their business talents and contribute to a charitable cause by setting up their own stalls in order to raise funds. The event created a lot of buzz as students marvelled at the variety of goods and services sold. Students queued for services like henna painting, Polaroid picture-taking and customised items such as notebooks and folders, all of which were quickly sold out. This year, the introduction of game booths made the bazaar livelier than usual. We managed to raise about $600 for ACRES (Animal Concerns

Research and Education). All participants involved felt a deep sense of purpose and achievement. Outside of school, our team of 12 students represented the Institute in the finals of the annual National Cashflow Competition in March. We had a great time learning more about financial concepts and management skills. In June, we also had the opportunity to learn from accomplished and budding entrepreneurs at the Youth Entrepreneurship Symposium (YES), who kindly shared with us their experience of various global entrepreneurial climates, as well as the relevant business skills needed to succeed in these arenas. For this Symposium, we are proud to share that our own Ng Jun Jie (14B6), Lim Jia Heng (15A1) and Ray Lee Jia Shen (15S2) clinched the Best Financial Plan Award. Likewise, at the Youth Entrepreneurship Competition (YEC) organised by the Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC) in conjunction with their annual Youthphoria Carnival, the team led by Ang Qi Qian (16C2) made it to the finals. The team managed to raise about $900 for Lions Befrienders and the ST Pocket Money Fund. The E Club hopes to continue to develop an enterprising spirit in students. We also look forward for opportunities to put our skills to use at events that allow us to put our learning into practice. On this note, we would like to thank our teachers-in-charge, Mrs Selina Wee, Ms Chen Qinglun, Ms Shong Kaiting Grace, and the alumni of our club for their unwavering support throughout our journey, and all students and teachers who have helped us in one way or another. FLOORBALL The year 2016 has been a memorable one for the Floorball Team. We were resolute in achieving our team goal of winning at least three matches this year and are proud to report that we were successful in doing so. This achievement was only possible due to the unwavering commitment of all our players, our coach and our teachers, all of whom form the foundation that our team is built upon. During the course of the A Division Inter-School Competition, our team demonstrated impeccable teamwork and sportsmanship. We were undaunted by the fact that we were grouped with the reigning champions, and started off the tournament by defeating Nanyang Junior College with a score of 10-1. This was a marked improvement in our performance in comparison to previous years. We eventually managed to clinch the third position in the league tables, a feat made possible by the team’s resilience and consistent hard work.

FOOTBALL BOYS The year 2016 was a time of transition for the MI Football Boys’ team as it had to be rebuilt after the departure of our previous coach and many of the senior players. However, the boys were not daunted, and devoted more effort during training to improve our fitness and skills in preparation for the coming A Division matches. The team welcomed Mr Michael Adams as its new coach and had to adapt quickly to a new coaching style and to meet his high expectations. Mr Shawn Ang was also a new addition to the CCA as a teacherin-charge. Being an experienced PE teacher, he provided us with valuable advice about how to improve our physical conditioning and how we could take better care of ourselves before and after the games to ensure optimal performance. Over the course of many gruelling trainings, the team developed discipline and a strong team spirit, and everyone motivated each other to do well both on the field and in their academic studies.
At the beginning of the National A Division tournament, the team fought hard and made it to the second round, most remarkably beating last year’s runners-up, NYJC. However, despite the team’s best effort, we were unable to proceed to the semi-finals. Nonetheless, the team was able to end the tournament on a positive note, as we were ranked as one of the top 8 schools out of the 20 odd schools participating in the tournament. The team has, without doubt, improved greatly in the past year. The members displayed great fighting spirit, dedication and passion for the sport. This would not have been possible without our coach and our teachers, Mr Lee Kuang-Shiun and Mr Shawn Ang. We would like to thank them for their effort and continued belief in the team. They have imparted necessary life skills that will allow the players to excel even after leaving the Institute. With these qualities, we are certain that the team can achieve even more in 2017 and bring glory to Millennia. Written by: Abu Isa B Abdullah (14B1), Captain

FOOTBALL GIRLS Millennia Football Ladies provides students with the opportunity to work with people of different backgrounds. Our aim is to learn, work and grow together as a team, put our differences aside, and contribute meaningfully both to football and our academic work. The year 2016 has been a memorable yet challenging one for us as we faced many unexpected setbacks which dampened our fighting spirit. There were times when things did not go as we expected despite the preparations we made. However, with the constant support, positive affirmation and motivation given by our teammates, friends and teachers, we managed to work even harder towards our goal. Despite the initial lack of experienced players which was a disadvantage, the team put its heart and soul into improving our skills and gameplay tactics, leading to a win in our last game against the opponent. There is an old English idiom about how “you reap what you sow”. We definitely worked very hard to improve
individually and as a team, and giving up was never an option for any of us. We would not be who we are now if not for the unconditional support, advice and motivation from our teachers, Mr Senthil Kumaran and Miss Chuang Sulynn; our watchful mentor, Mr Jonathan Ram; and last but not least, Coach Shah, who has been most patient and who has taught us so much within a short span of time. Their belief in us has definitely moulded us into better football players and better people. Lastly, we would like to remind our juniors not to give up. Training is never meant to be easy. They should continue to push themselves to the limit even under frustrating and tiring conditions. They will definitely need each other’s support and encouragement to go far together. They should always remember: “If they are strong, we are stronger. If they are fast, we are faster. HOCKEY The journey leading up to the A Division Hockey Tournament was an arduous yet memorable one for both the Hockey Boys’ and Girls’ teams. Most of us had little to no prior experience in the sport, so it was indeed daunting to enter the tournament this year knowing that we would face multiple formidable foes. However, the continuous encouragement from everyone around us pushed us to give our best. With everyone sharing a common goal, we braved setbacks and shed copious amounts of blood, tears and sweat during every strenuous training session. Though our performance did not initially measure up to expectations during the competition, we decided to learn from our mistakes and work on our strengths. The Hockey Boys and Girls fought all the way through the Bowl and Plates competition respectively, with the boys eventually becoming runners-up while the girls emerged champions.

That, however, did not wear out our team spirit and energy. We managed to clinch the consolation prize for singing in the Agni competition conducted by Anderson Junior College. On top of that, we also participated in the debate competition organised by National Junior College annually. Despite our loss, this experience has made us stronger as a CCA and served as a platform for us to identify our weaknesses. Our strong bond and understanding among each other has helped us to stand against all odds. Apart from participating in competitions, our CCA conducted a Kolam competition during the Mother

Tongue fortnight week. This event received a good response from the Institute, and many came forward to make beautiful Kolams to showcase their creativity. During the March holidays, we conducted a dance camp at Commonwealth Secondary School and had a great time mingling with the students while teaching them traditional Indian dance forms. A group of us were also given an opportunity to serve the Indian community through volunteering at the Hong Kah Community Centre for the Pongal celebration, also known as the Tamil harvest festival. It was a great and fulfilling experience guiding the little children and their parents and executing the various exciting activities organised for them. Indian Cultural Society has certainly given us many memorable experiences and has taught us many valuable lessons. In 2017, we hope that our juniors will learn from our setbacks and gain as many achievements as possible to bring glory to our CCA and the school. We would like to thank the school and the teachers- in-charge for providing us with the opportunities to showcase our talents. Written by: Aiswarya D/O Manickavasgam (14A4), President

INDIAN DANCE Mia Michaels said, “If you dance with your heart, your body will follow”. Similarly, Indian Dance (ID) aims to explore the various genres of dance and develop the skills and character of the students as it also teaches us to do everything from our hearts. ID members have been actively involved in various activities throughout 2016. It started off with the PU1 CCA Open House performance to welcome the new batch of students and generate their interest in Indian dance. Following that, we performed during the Chinese New Year celebration to showcase the different ethnicities uniting in celebration. In May, we performed for Institute Day, during which the school commemorated the achievements of students, teachers and CCAs. ID also received an award for the distinction that we achieved during 2015 SYF. We ended off the year with a performance during the Teachers’ Day celebration. Other than performing for school events, our team

is also intensively preparing for the 2017 Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) competition. Looking back at 2016, it has been a smooth year for ID as we have participated in school celebrations and have been able to foster stronger bonds as a team, and there were various dance sessions during which we played bonding activities. This motivated us to do well for upcoming performances and to remain united as a team. Through the regular feedback sessions that we carried out after practices, we have been able to attain a mutual understanding among everyone. In 2017, ID is looking forward to perform during the SYF, and doing our best to make the school and teachers proud. We are also eager to perform for school events, and would like to explore Classical Indian Dance so that the students will be exposed to the various genres. ID is very grateful to the teachers in-charge, Mrs Sankar, Ms Alivia and Mdm Masrini for their continuous support and guidance for our progressive development in both CCA and studies. We would also like to sincerely thank our instructor, Miss Durga, for her patience in mentoring us to bring out the fullest potential of every member. Written by: Deviyani (15B1)

LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club aims to promote the love for reading through the provision of a comfortable and conducive learning environment for students. We reorganised the shelves in the library so that students will be able to find their desired books efficiently. We also reached out to the school population through the organising of a book review competition, through which MI students were to submit reviews of selected books. The best reviews were shared with the school, and the writers received tokens of appreciation. We went for two learning journeys, one to the ‘Future of Us’ exhibition and the other to the National Gallery Singapore. These activities provided opportunities for us to learn about how an exhibition might be set up, which is an important part of the skillset of a librarian, and also to acquire an appreciation of different forms of art.
2016 has been a fruitful year for the club, and we have learnt and grown together. Despite the various conflicts and obstacles faced in the execution of various projects, we were able to remain cohesive and overcome the difficulties together. We aspire to further contribute to the school community and improve the library facilities to provide a better learning environment in the future. On this note, we appreciate the support provided by our teachers, Ms Shang and Mrs Chan. Despite their busy schedules, both of them still set aside time to organise meaningful learning journeys to enrich our CCA experiences. We would also like to express our gratitude to the friendly school librarians for guiding us in our carrying out of shelving duties. Written by: Song Jia Yi, Tristen (15B6)

MALAY CULTURAL SOCIETY This year marked the launch of the Malay Cultural Society’s (MCS) foray into the Singapore Youth Festival’s (SYF) biennial Arts Presentation. Although members of the team were new to this competition, we mustered our strengths and rose to the challenge to play roles requiring great dramatic depth and breadth. We worked out the emotions and mannerisms of the various characters and learnt more about the era’s rich socio-historical events. In addition, the team experimented with different kinds of lighting, sound effects and background music, resulting in a well-produced final product. Our efforts impressed the judges and the team walked off with the Distinction award for our piece “Pencarian”, or The Quest, which depicted the trials and tribulations of a family who lived in Singapore’s immediate post-war era. Our success at the Singapore Youth Festival would not have been possible without a high level of discipline, tenacity, camaraderie, and faith in ourselves. MCS was fortunate also to be able to share our enthusiasm for traditional Malay music with students and teachers from Okinawa Prefectural High School and ITIS Stanislao Cannizzaro, Italy,
during their visit last year. In our interactions with the visitors, we experienced how a love for music could transcend language and cultural barriers. We also discovered some similarities in the kinds of traditional music developed by different cultures. Within the school, MCS contributed to the reinforcement of bonds between different ethnic groups through the performance of a skit about ethnic food for the joint commemoration of Hari Raya Celebration and Racial Harmony Day. The skit showed howfriendshipcouldovercomeculturalbarriers.Astheskithadtobepre-recordedwitha camera, this presented us with a new test, as performing in front of a camera demanded a different set of skills. It proved to be a good opportunity for our junior members to extend the range of their acting ability to better equip them for future projects. Looking back, the year 2016 has brought us not only trials and tribulations but also joy as we savour the fruits of our various successes. We aspire to fill the coming year with more cultural and drama activities that demand a high standard of Malay language usage, and also to continue to improve our acting and stage-management skills to better equip ourselves for future challenges at the Singapore Youth Festival. MALAY DANCE Tarian Melayu, or Malay dance, is a communal art form that draws its inspiration from different aspects of everyday life. As practitioners of this art form, we are thus motivated to support one another both on and off stage, and we do our best to lift each other’s spirits through little means of gift exchanges and appreciation cards. Tarian Millennia aims to nurture each individual member not only aesthetically, but also holistically. We share our thoughts with one another after every session to better improve our dance routines or simply to offer our reflections about life in general. This has enabled us to grow together as a team. This year, Tarian Millennia has been involved in three major events: the CCA open house, Chinese New Year and Institute Day. It was good that on the day of the CCA open house, we also hosted our friends from Okinawa. We taught them the traditional art of Malay Dance and had the privilege of performing and interacting with them. Our piece for Institute Day was a little more special

as it was the last time we were able to perform with our final year students with a brand new routine and props. Although it was initially challenging trying to synchronise our movements during certain parts of the dance, we managed to pull through as a team. The concert was a bittersweet farewell to our graduating students, but it ended the year on a good note. Overall, 2016 has been a good year for the team, with successful and fulfilling performances which could not have been possible without the help of our instructor, Mr Abdul Yazid, as well as the guidance and support of our teachers-in-charge. We would like to thank them for always believing in us and for pushing us to greater heights as well as staying strong together with us to help us overcome all the adversities that came our way. Our hopes for 2017 would be to recruit as many members as we can, so as to be able to participate in the Singapore Youth Festival 2017 where we hope to win another Distinction award. This will reciprocate the effort and dedication of our teachers and seniors to the CCA, as well as uphold the good name of Tarian Millennia. Written by: Nur Insyirah Bte Mohd Yusof (15B6), President

MODERN DANCE This year offered new beginnings for MI Modern Dance as we began our tutelage under our new instructors, Ms Lulu and Mr Bryan. Although most of us had never danced before, we were very keen to learn about how to fuse ballet with more contemporary techniques. Our enthusiasm for this art form motivates us to stay back after school for extra practices and rehearsals to improve our skills and technique, so that we can give our best on stage. We started the year with a performance for the PU1 CCA Open House. We stepped out of our comfort zones and tried new dance styles such as Jazz and Hip-Hop. Our discipline and precision in executing these new snappy routines impressed the audience and we were able to recruit a number of new students into the CCA.
training helped to build the teamwork and dedication required for every performance. The weekly practices bonded us and improved the chemistry between the dancers. We believe that the ardour and zest we have for dance will be the driving force to bring MI Modern Dance to greater heights. We hope that this passion within us and our juniors will culminate in an excellent performance for next year’s Singapore Youth Festival. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers-incharge for their unfaltering support and encouragement. We would also like to express our gratitude to our instructors for their guidance. Written by: Goh Xue Li (15S4)

NEW MEDIA CLUB The New Media Club (NMC) provides audio-technical support, photography and videography services for the Institute. During the year, we serve in various school events such as Institute Day, Sports Fiesta, Teacher’s Day, National Day, Transcendence, as well as the preparation for morning assembly, often in collaboration with the other CCAs and programme owners. At NMC, we believe in giving every student opportunities to hone their skills. Learning from experts and fellow members alike, NMC members share their creations done during professional workshops such as VJC Canon Photography Expose Seminar, Blackmagic Design Cinematography workshop, and also during in-house lessons on web design, photography and videography. Besides that, NMC members are also encouraged to conduct activities or workshops during CCA hours on any aspect of the new media. As we learn from one another and share our knowledge

and experiences, we pick up useful new media skills and draw the club closer together. NMC also participates actively in external events such as the Singapore Student Photography Conference and competitions such as the School Digital Media Award (SDMA) and VJC Canon ExposĂŠ IX Playmobil Macro Photography Competition in 2016, where we were able to clinch second place. Internally, we organise our own MI Photography Competition and learning journeys. Looking ahead, we hope that NMC will continue to strive for excellence, be committed in carrying out our duties and continue to serve Millennia Institute in the coming years. We hope our achievements and experiences in 2016 will continually feed our hunger for more in the future. We would like to express our gratitude and thanks to our teachers-in-charge, Mr Yong Kuo Hoong, Ms Lee Nian Tjie and Mr Joel Ho Kah Yong for their continued support, advice and guidance. RUGBY The MI Rugby team, or MI Titans, developed a strong sense of brotherhood over the course of the year. The feeling of going out on the pitch, holding the ball and working together as a group fighting our battles is something we enjoy the most about the game. Although we did not accomplish our goal of finishing in one of the top four positions in the A Division due to the strength of our opponents, that did not deter us in any way from enjoying the game, training hard or putting up a good fight against our opponents.
Even though the boys toiled to have each other’s backs, the team would not have been able to appreciate the game if not for our coach, Mr Chuan, and the teachers, Mr Then, Mr Koh and Mr Andrew, who generously gave us their valuable guidance and unwavering support. Not one to rest on our laurels, MI Titans are determined to win a place among the top four teams in the coming years. Written by: Dinesh Kumaar B (14B3), Vice-Captain
With a huge number of experienced players leaving the team, this year’s cohort was made up of novice players, most of them who had not even played any form of sport previously. Despite the initial difficulties we faced in trying to build a good team of players and getting the right people to play in the right positions, we grew and adapted throughout the A division tournament. Our ability to learn quickly resulted in our first runner-up position for the Plates Championship.

SPEECHMASTERS “Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel.- Ralph Waldo Emerson Every individual in Speechmasters joined and stayed in the CCA because they had something to say. It was not so much a series of training sessions but a gathering of ordinary people with an extraordinary passion and love for speech. In the areas of emcee and debate, our CCA aims to impart the skills and provide the platforms for our members to grow as better speakers and develop their own style of speech. We also aim to ignite, endeavour, and even to invigorate the fervour within our members to continue to polish this art both now and beyond. Our members have done us proud this year- a special shoutout needs to be given to Joel Law from 16A1 who emerged as the 5th Best Speaker at the prestigious MOE-ACJC Intercollegiate Debating Championships, or MIDC. Our debaters truly exemplify the values of resilience and
teamwork, never wavering in the face of tough opponents and spurring each other on to give their all. With regard to emceeing, I am honoured to have been selected after a rigorous audition conducted by MOE to be one of the Masters of Ceremony for the Singapore Youth Festival 2016 Celebrations @ the Malls in Causeway Point. Emceeing in front of the general public was an invaluable opportunity that I am immensely grateful for. Let us also not forget my fellow emcees who hosted many school events such as Institute Day, Transcendence and Sports Fiesta to name a few. In the fast-approaching 2017, we hope that Speechmasters will be given more learning opportunities to represent Millennia Institute in national/ intercollegiate oratorical and debate competitions, as well as receive more hosting requests at school events as our service contribution to MI. SPORTS RECREATION CLUB In 2016, MI Sports Recreation Club (SRC) continued with Cross Country Recreation Club and Netball Recreation Club as one CCA. This year, MI Cross Country (MIXC) team recruited new members with a passion for running as well as the desire to lead a healthy lifestyle. The MIXC represented the school in A Division for the 57th National Interschool Cross Country Championship 2016. The team consisted of runners from previous year as well as Year 1 runners. Everyone gave their all and persevered towards the finish line, clocking in our personal bests. It was a new experience especially for the new members. In their reflections after every race they pondered about areas where they could improve. Thus there emerged a culture of resolve among the runners to strive harder and better for next year’s A Divisions. During the weekly sessions there were varied activities that included fun runs and games as well as weights and circuit training. All these were student-led and they inculcated values of confidence and teamwork.

For the MI Netball team this year, we saw our club double in numbers as the new Year 1s joined us. The more seasoned players stepped up to the challenge and took the initiative to help and guide other teammates and the new juniors so that all could improve together. We finally had enough players to hold a full court game! The friendly game with Jurong Junior College coupled with the 2016 Daisy Tan Carnival gave us valuable opportunities to improve our teamwork and skills. Each training session became a quest for constant self-improvement and team bonding. As we continue to forge ahead, we aspire to become a stronger team both physically and mentally. STUDENT ACTIVISM CLUB The Student Activism Club focuses on raising awareness on issues of relevance, and this year, we emphasised on helping the less fortunate in our community. The exposure gave us first-hand experience like caring for those in need, and these lessons moulded us into better individuals. This year, we continued with our long-term partnership with Princess Elizabeth Primary School to mentor selected Primary 5 and Primary 6 students on their academic subjects and also to build up their self-esteem through games. Through such activities, we helped to nurture a positive attitude towards learning and build up their self-esteem and confidence. Throughout the sessions, we have learnt that teaching is not only a profession but also an act of kindness. Beyond committing our time to only such establishments, our club also took part in the Millennia Institute’s Social Bazaar during which the proceeds from the sale of our goods were donated to charity beneficiaries. We even emerged as the most successful booth, raising the highest amount for our beneficiaries.
Not to forget, we went to Singapore Polytechnic to learn basic sign language skills from the Sign Language Club. It was a very memorable lesson as we had first-hand experience of the struggles faced daily by people with disability. It made us learn how to appreciate what we have and how fortunate we are as compared to them. Through this workshop, we are more aware of the difficulties that are faced by the hearingimpaired and hope to be of help in the near future. We would also gladly recommend such activities to the students in Millennia Institute as such skills would benefit them and also the hearing-impaired as they would feel accepted by the rest of society. Last but not least, to end off the year, our club took part in the President’s Challenge 2016, under the Heart Train project. We raised over $250 and donated our proceeds to those in need. All in all, we had many experiences that we could learn and nurture from. In 2017, our Club hopes to bring activism to a greater level in Millennia Institute so as to help to build a society with greater empathy for those around us. Our club also hopes to raise awareness of social causes and do more projects relating to this in 2017. Written by: Nurul Hamizah Diyanah (15A3) and Doris Lim Li Xuan (15B5)

SYMPHONIC BAND “The band is only as strong as its weakest member.” The Millennia Institute Symphonic Band aims to widen the scope of musical understanding by discovering and pushing the musical boundaries of an individual. It is through such an exercise that we strive to push one another forward and instil a sense of camaraderie among our members so that our goal of musical excellence for every member is achieved.
Looking forward, the main focus of the band in 2017 would be the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation. The band achieved the unthinkable of attaining Certificate of Accomplishment in 2015 – a first since the inauguration of the band. As such, we believe that our student leaders, and our conductor will be able to lead the band in the right direction, maximising our potential.
This year, we participated in the biennial Singapore International Band Festival (SIBF), an international stage in Asia where bands compete to further develop their musicality. Our members put in countless of hours and energy rehearsing for the competition so as to make our efforts worthwhile. Although we fell short of what was needed to clinch the bronze award, what truly mattered was that we persevered through the tight schedule and rigorous training together. We fostered strong bonds through the countless rehearsals, and constantly spurred each other on.
Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our teachers without whom all these would have just been a distant dream: Ms Michelle Lim, Mr Liew Yong Qiang, Ms Lee Li Wen and Mr Koh Siong Yang. Thank you for always giving us your unwavering support, strong words of advice and being our pillar of strength in this arduous journey through the examinations and competitions!

TENNIS RECREATION CLUB The Millennia Institute Tennis Club was formed in 2004 by a group of passionate tennis enthusiasts who had the desire to share the love of the game with others in the school community. The Club encourages all its members to push themselves beyond their limits to acquire a good proficiency of the game and at the same time develop a strong team spirit and a culture of aspiration within the club. This is so in order for all members to be properly prepared up to compete and better themselves in major tournaments. In 2016, the Club organised its own Intra-School Doubles Tennis Tournament which was open to all members and even had its own seeding system in place. Our main intention was to provide students with competitive and umpiring experience, and at the same time also give them a chance to exhibit their skills and prowess on the courts.
We also managed to send five advanced players to participate in the open category Red Ball Tennis Challenge 2016 held by ActiveSG. The Red Ball Tennis Challenge featured many experienced and skilled players in the open category. Our participants sparred gallantly. Despite not getting to the advanced stages of the competition, they emerged stronger and better players having had a real taste of tennis at a professional level. The Club looks forward to a new year, to engage in more external competitions and friendly matches with other Junior Colleges and to give its members the very best of opportunities to exhibit their skills and talents. WUSHU It has been an eventful and enriching year for the MI Wushu Team, with many opportunities for us to dazzle audiences with what we have learnt. Many of us, including the juniors, chose to join Wushu despite having little or no background in this sport. However, our team members displayed perseverance, discipline and the team spirit when we were faced with challenges and difficulties. With each other’s encouragement and moral support, we acquired proficiency through the regular training sessions and grew to become better and stronger in the sport. This allowed us to be more resilient and focused in working towards a common goal. In 2016, we participated in the annual Singapore Schools Sports Council National Inter-School Wushu Championships held at Chung Cheng High School (Main). We are proud that our team member, Luo Xinyang (14B6) attained the 4th position in the Spear category. We also collaborated with Princess Elizabeth Primary School to perform

in the Economic Cabinet component of the Singapore Model Cabinet programme. •Rohen S/O Veera (15B6) won “Honorary Mention” in the ASEAN Plus Model Summit at Dunman High School as the delegate of the United States of America. As our late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew once said, “Standing still is the sure way to extinction.” In that light, 2016 is an important year to the CCA and its members as YDS diversified and introduced new initiatives and activities. New initiatives include a new partnership with REACH community services that involves training under an inhouse programme, “YDS Cares”, to allow members to contribute to the Singaporean community. The partnership with REACH allows YDS members to join REACH’s Youth Ambassador programme which aims to nurture young leaders with a heart for national issues and policies. Equipped with such skills, YDS is proud to initiate a student-run governmental feedback unit in Millennia Institute to actively reach out to fellow Millennians regarding governmental policies and national issues in order to gain constructive feedback. On 23 April, all YDS members were invited to the annual YouthSpeak on the topic of the Singapore Budget 2016 to express their opinions to the invited Members of Parliament and Ministers. Furthermore, “YDS Cares” also enables members to participate actively in community service and nation-building by volunteering in community projects organised by the People’s Association. YDS will be working closely with our partners to benefit more Singaporeans and Millennians. We will like to thank our Teachers In-Charge, Mr Lee Jake Hooi and Mrs Tamilselvi Siva, for giving us their support and providing opportunities to plan our activities and initiatives. YOUNG INNOVATORS CLUB The year started with a change in the team of teachers-in-charge of the CCA. Subsequently, the Club reviewed its objectives and direction and decided to broaden its scope from robotics to other areas of innovation and to participate in a broader range of competitions.
also conducted to Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) in early March. Students learnt how innovation transforms industrial processes and drives efficiency and were awed by the technological hardware that designers use to prototype their designs.
Our schedule became peppered with preparations for competitions and learning journeys to organisations on the forefront of innovation. In March and April, members participated in the HDB Cool Ideas and the Sembcorp Greenwave competitions. Both competitions required student teams to submit creative and innovative design ideas to solve tangible issues highlighted in the competition write-up. Though our designs for the respective competitions were not selected, the lessons we learnt were invaluable. Through such participation, members had a better appreciation of and the amount of research required to produce a successful innovation so we look forward to join the competitions again next year. A learning journey was
The Club’s flagship activity, VEX Robotics Championships, featured one team from Millennia Institute. Although the the robot they created performed below expectations, our Club members vowed to return stronger next year. Looking forward to 2017, the club will continue to plan and implement activities that highlight innovation in as many areas as possible, and we will also rethink our recruitment strategy in order to be more attractive to potential members that share the same passion for innovation. YOUNG JOURNALISTS CLUB The Young Journalists Club took off in 2014 with the aim of giving a platform to passionate writers in MI to express their thoughts creatively.
competitions and Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) achievements to help foster a stronger school identity.
In 2016, the club published the most substantial newsletter MI has seen, called Stepping Stones. It featured our own edition of “Chicken Soup” stories and June Holiday specials. We wrote special articles which provided stress-relief and study tips, coupled with a round-up of events that happened in Semester 1. More significantly, inspired by the Chicken Soup book series, our members tapped on our friends in MI and collected motivational stories from the community to create our very own anthology of inspirational tales. The objective of creating this work was to motivate students of MI to persevere and study hard during the June break. Our contribution to the school did not end here – as our CCA was a major contributor to the school’s newsletter. We interviewed our new Vice Principal, Ms Tng, and kept the school updated with the results of the A Division
In August 2016, the Club travelled to Gardens by the Bay for a Learning Journey. While we learnt a lot about plants, more importantly, we learned how gardens can inspire writing either by becoming the backdrop of a good story, or by becoming the actual source of our fantasies and creations. Looking back, our members have been very enthusiastic about the CCA’s activities and have consistently produced diverse content for different publications with the interests of MI students at heart. We aspire to take in more members next year so as to expand the variety of our articles. On this note, we would like to extend our gratitude to our CCA teachers, Ms Thia Shi Hui, Ms Jamaliah Othman, Ms Rose Ho and also Ms Jane Lin, for always encouraging us and ensuring quality in our articles.
