Stories of W.O.W.!

Stories of W.O.W.! Thank you for being a part of this year’s PAssionArts Festival 2014. In its 3rd year, the festival was held from 25 May to 29 June 2014 over six weeks. The theme for this year’s festival was Works of Wonder (W.O.W.!), featuring large format visual art installations co-created by residents and artists. The aims of the festival are: a) To serve as an annual platform to encourage “Participatory Arts” at the community level. In the neighbourhood they live in, residents not only can enjoy the beauty of arts, they can also get

involved in co-creating arts with the artists, or volunteer by serving as art programme champions or festival event helpers; and b) Promote friendship and build emotional anchoring among the residents, providing opportunities for them to forge collective memories. This year, 86 Community Arts and Culture Clubs (CACCs) presented a total of 40 PAssionArts Festival Villages. Among them, 7 were organized at the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) level; 7 were at the combined divisional level and 26 at divisional level.

Stories of W.O.W.!

Approach and result outcomes Participatory Arts Adopting “Participatory Arts” as the approach, the CACCs with the help of other grassroots organizations such as RCs and NCs, and partners such as schools and welfare homes recruited about 18,000 residents as participants/volunteers to co-create 95 large format visual arts for the festival. With artists as facilitators, these residents attended a total of 300 pre-festival workshops ranging from two weeks to four months from February to May 2014 to create the art installations. Together with other event volunteers, they also initiated many creative ideas and helped transform different heartland locations across the island from void decks, neighbourhood centres, parks, markets, CCs and seaside into vibrant and exciting art places. Partnerships Forged Other than more active art participants (18,000 compared to 4,000 in 2013) attracted, the festival this year also reached out to more Artists (80 compared to 41 last year), and more partners such as schools, tertiary instituations, art organizations and voluntary welfare organizations (120 as compared to 90 last year). Outreach to Less Fortunate Community PAssionArts Festival 2014 also outreached to the less fortunate in the community. About 480 participants from 23 welfare homes and centres were involved in art-making in this year’s PAssionArts Festival compared to 80 from seven homes and centres in 2013.

Richer and Higher Quality in terms of Art Content A total of 95 large format visual art installations were created and exhibited at a total of 48 community locations for a period from three days to permanant. Many of them are of interesting and creative art quality. This book captures all 95 installations and some of the key PAssionArts Champions, artists and residents’ experience of the festival. We would like to thank all involved in this year’s very successful co-creation festival and look forward to working with you again for next year’s festival!

This is the first time I am attending the PAssionArts Festival in Ang Mo Kio, and it was simply amazing to see so many different varieties of large visual arts displays that brought back many fond memories for me and my family. It was also a great opportunity for me to share with my children and grandchildren how Singapore was like in the early 1980s. Tay Choon Huat, Age 60, Ang Mo Kio resident

From March to June 2014, Kampong Glam residents together with volunteers from Kampong Glam CC, co-created these visual art pieces with artists, Angella and Samantha. The urban areas portrayed in the paintings created wonderful architectural juxtapositions and the use of colourful cubic-looking clouds gave a sense of modernisation.

I can bring back what I have learnt here and hopefully I can contribute back to the community.

It’s a bit tricky because it’s large format. The layman, they are not experienced. So the structure itself was a little challenging…it’s fun to build something big together. Personally, it was a really good experience for me. I had fun creating these eco-products with the kids. And it’s a good experience for them. We get to see a lot of residents around here. They come and enjoy the event. And they are surprised that there is so much going on in this neighbourhood.

I volunteered myself to do these robots because I feel that I can be a part of Art Club. I can bond with my juniors as I feel that I am a bit anti-social. We all did the robots together.

W.O.W.! 33 Secrets

This is a project about sharing the secrets within a neighbourhood. Anonymous secrets were collected throughout Serangoon to construct into a beautiful installation. A window was then created where residents could perceive their neighbourhood on a much deeper level, allowing them a glimpse into each other’s world, with a realization that everyone is more connected than it seems.

Founder and designer of Singapore-based womens wear label, Stolen, Elyn is also an autodidactic installation artist. She is an established figure in the local design and art industries, and a former creative group head of advertising firm, Ogilvy & Mather.

I was particularly touched at how Mr Ow, a coffee shop owner was fully committed in helping us put this project together. He put in time, effort and rounded up all his staff and son to take part. In his words, ‘I believe that every one of us has an artistic streak, but not everyone has the opportunity to pursue and develop it.’ That is a humbling thought. I am thankful that I am able to do what I feel for and am able to express stories through my art.

Joo Choon Lin Choon Lin has exhibited in Singapore and internationally, participating in exhibitions such as the Roving Eye at Sorlandets Kunstmuseum, Norway (2011), Resolution of Reality at Third Floor Hermes, Singapore (2012), and Your Eyes are Stupid at Singapore Biennale 2013.

I really like my team, the participants, and people who are with me in my project. I like our attitude, our togetherness, but there’s one thing I don’t know… that is how chemistry performed without my notice. It just occurred so naturally. The costumes gave them the freedom, provided an escape from the mundane world which helped to release their emotions in different ways.

(We love) Being able to create a piece which encourages the debate of HOME for everyone…We love that some people stepped in and walked out with nods of approvals because they felt the positivity of it giving voice to local residents, or perhaps they can personally relate to the quotes and saw it as their opinions being seen by others…(It has made us happier) Getting non-traditional arts into the heartlands. Fish Jaafar Fish is a formalist artist with works ranging from paintings and installations. He believes that aesthetics can be found in all things technical and dry.

Artist Fish Jaafar and Tampines Town Council had more than 200 residents spontaneously contributing video clips of their antics – whether silly, weird or quirky – while waiting for the lift.

I think it is cool because it is everyone’s interaction. It is cool to find different perspective from different people and infusing it into a work where it is a collective as a whole and also completion of the product will be…it is more fulfilling in terms of the artwork as a whole. I like art because I think that art is meant to be shared and it is unlike resources, it can be shared.

Most of the time, our own workshop which we conduct at the studio is on the individual level or at the most it is two friends, a friends or a couple. But this one is really a lot of family. There were I think at least 4 or 5 parents with a few kids and they all do it together so that is quite fun…all of the finished pieces will be displayed there and the families can bring their friends and say “this is my piece”. PAssionArts Champions Dorcas Ng Member of Serangoon Community and Culture Club, Artist/Designer, “Things I Will Never Sell” Coming Home 2014 Installation Dorcas’ association with PAssionArts started as an artist in PAssionArts Month 2013. She created an installation around the ideas of learning centres in Serangoon. She soon became a member of the Serangoon Community Art and Culture Club and for PAssionArts Festival 2014, she worked with students from St.Hilda’s Secondary School on creating a ‘Coming Home’ house, titled ‘Things I will Never Sell’.

She welcomes spontaneous real time intervention in the creative process, which is an important element in her work as she strives to create fresh and experimental work every time. These narratives take on different form/media each time but are all one continuous thread of work.

(The experience has been) very fulfilling especially when I worked with students and trying to tell them and share more knowledge about contemporary art…To be able to share with them my artistic vision and bring them onboard this project, it is a very fulfilling thing... (With the students) it is only along the way that I start to piece together the different element (of the installation)…I can plan, I can change and I can adapt. So it is quite exciting in a way that I still don’t really know exactly at the end how it is going to look like.

PAssionArts Champions Yeo Wee Hwee Resident of Tampines, “Storeroom” Coming Home 2014 Installation, This is Wee Hwee’s first project with her fellow Tampines neighbours. She collaborated with students from Chongzheng Primary School, to re-mould personal items they brought from their storeroom for the ‘Coming Home’ house installation. The installation will also be showcased at the school’s 30th Anniversary.

Wee Hwee’s practice enquires into the idea of becoming through a work intensive operation on displacement and transgression. The qualities and functions of the mass-produced materials used in our everyday lives are examined, exploited and challenged during the process of her exploration in order to transform them into objects, sculptures and installations overlaid with contradictions and ambiguity.

The work is a richer piece due to the contribution and co-creation from individuals from the community, building something that is not just the artist’s but also of theirs.By involving the community in the process of creation, hopefully more people will enjoy the experience of making and become more interested in art.

Led by artist Mdm Leong Lin Foon, large-scale kampong fixtures like the attap hut was built by volunteers from Sri Siva Durga Temple and students from the Sree Narayana Mission Home for the Aged. Residents from Sennett Estate hand-twined fishing nets to remind us of our past as a fishing village. Cedar Secondary School also generously loaned the Copper Artwork of the Alkaff Garden for display.

Our community partner The Hidden Good, a social enterprise, brought back the ‘blown-up’ version of kampong games, to the delight of many residents.

Mdm Leong Lin Foon, herself a resident of Potong Pasir, produced these large woodwork collages together with schools and the St. John’s Home for the Elderly. The works depict familiar scenes and distinguishable landscapes in the neighbourhood.

Stories of W.O.W.!

PAssionArts Champion Ms Aileen Toh

Aileen was discovered by the NAFA-PA ‘Your Neighbour is an Artist’ project initiated by CACCs in South West district and NAFA Alumni Association. This year is Aileen’s first time participating in PAssionArts Festival. After her first sculpture exhibition at Jurong Green CC (which is just across her home), she had expressed interest to create a project for the festival. She conceptualized ‘gARTen by the Green’, a large installation at the void deck of Blk 425 Jurong West Avenue 1. She co-created the installation with Jurong Central residents over a series of pre-festival workshops. Aileen studied Sculpture at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 2008. Her collection consists mainly of paintings and sculptures inspired by natural phenomena and human experiences.

As this is my first time installing an artwork at the void deck and facilitating so many residents, it is very challenging yet fulfilling. It was a great experience working with the community and I think this initiative is an effective way to propagate fine arts among the heartland. W.O.W.! 92 A Peace of Art

Singaporean artist Sun Yu-li and over 400 residents of West Coast collaborated on the largest canvas art installation in Singapore. Firstly, Sun Yu-li painted a framework of dots and lines using white paint on 36 plain black banners to convey his expression of a community. The residents then contributed their stories and memories of West Coast with different coloured paints, each stroke representing an individual woven into the vibrant tapestry of multi-coloured humanity. All 36 panels were assembled to form a giant 26m x 22m masterpiece that is displayed on the façade of Block 728 till end December 2014.

We wanted to do something novel and special with our mum on her birthday. Being able to participate in this mega art installation is really a meaningful and fun activity that has allowed us to pen our wishes for our dear mother in such an impressive way. This is the first time we are painting, and it is wonderful to be able to paint together as a family!

Angeline Tan, 38 years old with Mother Emily Tan, 67 Year old and family members Grace Tan, 40 years old and Samrio Tok, 45 years old, residents of Blk 713 Clementi West Street 2

Stories of W.O.W.!

Sun Yu-Li One of Singapore’s leading artists, Sun Yu-li has a distinctive style that is unique and innovative. Yu-li is an artist who has actively put Singapore on the world map with his overseas installations and exhibitions. He gives back to the community through charity efforts, educational outreach and advisory roles. He constantly reaches out to other arts groups to stage new forms of artistic expression, bringing art to people through initiatives like the Chingay Art Float, SMRT EZ-Link cards and the KrisShop Gift Pack.

This project was conceptualised together with PA and Artbitz. With 36 canvases visually connected, we invited over 400 residents, from toddlers to seniors to paint together. Seeing the possibilities when told they could paint with any colour and anywhere on the canvases, the residents had no hesitation in letting their feelings and emotions transform into strokes and shapes. The outcome was a visually stunning gigantic painting. It’s all about depicting a hope, a dream and an imagination, bridging cultures and bringing diverse communities together. I am glad that today, my Universal Language Art is well received as an art form, with many participants joining in the process through the years.
