Nigeria’s Unity Is

Paramount N

igeria’s unity can never be achieved by the present state of affairs confronting the nation. We stand to lose the prestigious name we have as the giant of Africa should we continue on this campaign of disintegration currently agitated by some selfish individuals. Nigerians please let us all sheath our swords and try to forget our grievances against one another, yes one another. It is important to note, that blood

is thicker than water. Have we forgotten that we are brothers? We are all created by one God whether black or white, Muslim or Christian. Let us not forget that even brothers and sister born from one womb still have issues but what brings them back together is love. As Nigerians, let us please show and demonstrate love for one another. We are where we now are as a nation, as a result of disunity, greed and selfishness and not love for one another.

Until we change our perception and speak the language of love, we will continue to see one another as Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. The United States of America that the whole world admires today is built on love. Without love there can never be infrastructural and economic development. Look at a small country like Malaysia, generally referred to as a developing country, now becoming a tourist attraction. Why? Because unity is the only way forward. The sovereignty of our nation should be the concern of all. For how long should we continue to shed innocent blood in our country? There is no disputing that a lot of injustice is everywhere in the land, but for the sake of this nation Nigeria and innocent blood that is being shed all the time, let us come together and tell ourselves: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!!!! Nigeria must take back its glory again. The truth is that we have lost our glory as a nation. There is no disputing that the center is strong and the states are weak while the local governments are much weaker. All these abnormalities can be corrected if we give peace a chance as individuals and as a nation. Yes, our mindsets must be changed towards the positive, our

general perception about one another or other ethnic groups must be changed, the gospel of Love should be our language. Each and every state MUST enjoy fiscal independence. A strong and united federation can only come about when the constituent units are sufficiently empowered by enabling practices which conform to the principles of federalism. In light of the above, I call on all ethnic groups and tribes in our dear country Nigeria to be more tolerant of one another, to ensure that we have peace and unity in our land. We have had leaders like Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Tafawa Balewa, who were telling us the truth. Let us listen to them, build up the spirit of tolerance with a spirit of togetherness which must be transparent so that we can address our different concerns as citizens and as a country in a more mature and peaceful manner, without which we will continue to live in crisis. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!

Cuppy and Temi Otedola Together they are Women of Excellence

P

art of Britain's new superrich, Nigerian socialites; Cuppy and Temi Otedola, are from a family worth some £650m. But, as bright young thing, they want to be successful in their own right. They are the daughters of energy tycoon Femi Otedola and, despite their determination to go-it-alone, they know that their father’s support will help to fund their ambitions. The girls, who both received private-education, enjoy jet-set lifestyles, don't want to live off their father's success and want to establish careers; with elder sister, Cuppy, 23, wanting to be a DJ while 19-year-old Temi is an aspiring fashion blogger.

Heiresses to a billion dollar fortune, they are well-known in their Nigerian homeland, but, as daughters of one of Africa's richest men they are not content they do not want to be rich and famous in his shadow. Instead, they are determined to work hard to make names for themselves in their own right. In 2015 Femi was listed as the 16th richest man in Africa by Forbes and has million pound properties in New York, Dubai, London, Abuja and Lagos, with his wealth enabling his daughters to attend expensive private schools in England, have the very best designer wardrobes and be waited on by ten members of staff at all times. As well as jet-setting between the opulent family properties around the world, they also enjoy spending time on their father's £7million yacht, have designer wardrobes and throw birthday parties that cost more than a fleet of supercars Cuppy, with a degree in business and French, from the University of London, is

keen to be famous in her own right as a DJ and has been securing gigs around the world at venues including Privé, Jalouse, District and Funky Buddha. She says: “People say that I’ve only managed to get these gigs because of my father, but it doesn't bother me as much as it probably did. I love what I do.” One of her biggest gigs was when she played at the inauguration of Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari. “I think I am a great DJ,” Cuppy says. “I have to deal with criticism from those who think I only had the opportunities in my career so far due to my father's connections and purse strings, but this doesn't concern me anymore. Now I only worry that I am not going to make the impact I want to make.'' Younger sister, Temi, feels the same as she tries to establish a name for herself in the fashion world. She set up her own style blog; JTO Fashion, which has 22,000 followers on Instagram as she shares news on the latest style must-haves with her fans - many of whom are Nigerian - as she travels between the fashion capitals of

Europe and shops in Dubai and London. She has a team of professionals to help her on her photoshoots taking pictures and filming her vlogs and has even hired top fashion photographers to take some of her pictures. Admitting that she would not have been able to establish her blog without her father's financial support, Temi, who is studying for a degree in art history at University College London, says she sees the help he has given her so far as a loan she intends to repay. She has also managed to hone her fashion credentials with an internship at Oscar de la Renta on Mount Street. Both of the sisters love staying in London which is why they were filmed for a Channel 4 documentary which lifts the lid on the spending habits of Nigerian billionaires. Both Cuppy and Temi say they want to be role models to young women in their home country and inspire them to work hard to achieve their goals.

BUSINESS

Call for Affordable Housing From Property Professionals

A

ccording to experts at this year’s annual Real Estate Unite 2017 summit in Lagos, there is a wealth of opportunities ahead for the industry - if the right things are done. At the ‘Africa’s Real Estate, What’s New?’ event, Deji Alli, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Mixta Africa, SA, for one, stressed the need for Government to come out with a scheme for the low end of the market by providing social housing, because of its advantages, which includes taxable income, which government is not receiving from such a large market. He noted that the real sector with assets put on the region of $26 trillion has important role of the real sector in asset economic stability. According to him, home ownership is aspirational and should start from the base because there is no viable mall without the low income group. And with

this, there is a big opportunity for both government and private sector. “The property sector has the greatest multiplier effect in the economy because of its relationship between capital flow and economic stability,” he said. He did, however regret that the Nigerian government appears to be missing the point, while private sector seemed to be helpless with narrow focus. Alli said that to stimulate the sector, the partnership between government and private sectors needs to be prevalent and strong in order to come out with the right policy that will drive the sector because it has what it takes to transform the African economy. In praising the Federal government for earmarking N100 billion for the family home fund under its Social Investment Programme, he said: “The Private sector needs to engage the government in order to take up the opportunity.

l Deji Alli, Chair and CEO of Mixta Africa There is a need to introduce special incentive to make it a reality. 1. 5 million new homes for low income people within 2 years and focus should be in the lower end of the market not on the higher end.” One delegate, Dr Doyin Salami, of the Lagos business school, said: “Property professionals must come together and engage policy makers to make progress. Despite the fact that property constitutes seven percent of the Nigerian economy, it has continued to shrink with negative growth.” He stressed the need for all stakeholders to deal with the demographic challenges, which, he said, has the potential to create social incohesion.

World Tour follows New Tinie Album? W

hile his representatives are keeping tight-lipped, reports have been circulating on social media of a new Tinie Tempah album with people questioning whether he will pick up right where he left off and deliver another excellent musical fare. Rumours of the British-based rapper/singer/songwriter working in recording studio are rife, with as many as eight songs having been put to tape. “It’s still in the early stages,” said a source. “He’s got security on the doors to ensure no-one hears a whisper.” Tinie, born Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu, has been signed to Warner Music Group subsidiary Parlophone Records since 2009 with rumours afoot that he is planning a worldwide tour at the end of 2018. When contacted, a representative had no information on a new album, or any of Tempah’s future plans. This isn’t the first time in recent memory reports have surfaced about Tinie Tempah recording sessions. Fans will be anxiously awaiting confirmation…or otherwise. After releasing a number of mixtapes, he released his long-awaited debut album, Disc-Overy, in October 2010. Preceded by two British number-one singles, ‘Pass Out’ and ‘Written in the Stars,’ the album charted at number one and was certified Platinum the next year. In 2011, he won two Brit Awards for Best British Breakthrough Act and Best British Single. In 2013, he released his second album, entitled ‘Demonstration.’ Preceded by top ten singles ‘Trampoline’ and ‘Children of the Sun,’ the album charted at number three and was certified gold by the BPI the next year. In 2015, he released ‘Not Letting Go,’ the first single from his third album ‘Youth.’ This gave Tempah his sixth UK number one, passing out Dizzee Rascal as the most by any rap artist. In 2007, along with his cousin, Dumi Oburota, he created his own record and fashion label Disturbing London Records.

EDUCATION

Nigerian Postgrads Set to Outnumber Indian Students in UK Universities

R

esearchers say that Indian students are choosing US institutions over those in the UK which, subsequently, means that Nigeria will soon become the UK’s second biggest source of international postgraduate students, according to research compiled by the British Council. China, the UK’s largest source of international postgraduate students, account for 44% of growth in the international postgraduate market with forecasts suggesting that Britain will host 241,000 postgraduate international students by 2024, allowing it to remain one of the top two destinations for studying a postgrad abroad – second only to the US. But researchers warn the UK is too dependent on China for its international numbers, and that it is losing out on Indian students. Demographic changes mean India’s appetite for higher education is expanding quickly and providing a source of international postgrad students that the US is exploiting. While in the UK, China accounts for 44%

of growth in the international postgraduate market, this figure stands at 33% in the US. More than half (54%) of the US’ international students arrive from India – which, by 2024, will be home to the largest tertiaryaged population, numbering over 119 million. “No single market should drive the growth and composition of a country’s incoming postgraduate body,” said Zainab Malik, director of research for British Council education intelligence. “As such, it is essential for institutions and policy-makers to continue to attract students from expanding economies besides China and India, including Nigeria, Indonesia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.” There are plenty of scholarships available for Nigerian students, as well as opportunities from TETfund, PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS), and State Governor Scholarships amongst others. For Nigerians living in Britain, many of the universities make students feel very much at home with lots on offer including major Nigerian food stores and Nigerian res-

taurants on, or near many campuses. BCU student, Ogu-Jude Munachiso LLB (Hons) Law, said: “I love everything about Birmingham City University. I can’t simply point my finger at one thing. I work in the International Office as a Conversion Officer, through the University’s OpportUNity programme, and I’ve done this for two years alongside my Law study. My advice to students is take advantage of the opportunities within the Universities in the UK.” Countries around the world are recognising the important role that education plays in creating a skilled workforce that meets the needs of industry and employers. As a result, there has been a huge increase in undergraduate enrolment the world over. The ever-changing marketplace has allowed for the growth of emerging economies, particularly in Nigeria, where students are looking to gain the qualifications they need to better their chances of getting a skilled job. This increase in undergraduate students has had a knock on effect, and seen more graduates applying for higher-level study.

SPORT

l Hakeem ‘The Dream’ Olajuwon

Hakeem Olajuwon

Making ‘The Dream’ Come True in the UK

by Steve Williams

H

e’s one of the world’s most decorated sports stars, with an enviable list of achieve the likes of which would be a massive array any successful team, as a whole, would be proud of. But, despite the NBA championship rings, multi Finals MVPs – amongst his other playing recognitions – his place in Basketball’s Hall of Fame and endless other achievements, the one ‘prize’ that Hakeem Olajuwon would say he has over all is his family.

The Nigerian-born American nicknamed ‘The Dream’ and a true legend of his sport, throughout the world, would always tell you that he is overwhelming grateful for what he has achieved in the rough-and-tumble of what is the game’s greatest league, but all of that will always pale into relative insignificance when compared to the importance of his family. An example of that is the fact that he has swapped the sunny climes of his home in Texas, in the US, for the ‘notso-sunny’ temperatures of the UK, as he follows his daughter, Abi, who is studying at the University of Birmingham. Lagos-born Hakeem has made the city his home whilst Abisola which, means "born into wealth and the wealth is greater than them," completes her studies and whilst following his daughter’s dreams, he’s taken the opportunity to impart some of the wealth of knowledge and experience he has onto a generation of basketball players in and around the city in no uncertain way. Following the announcement of his own camp in Birmingham, along with plans for an academy, Olajuwon has been seen around the city, including an impromptu appearance at the university practice where he went one-on-one with a player.

Now fully ensconced in the UK’s second city he set up the ‘Hakeem Olajuwon City of Birmingham Basketball Club Summer Camp,’ the first of its kind, for all players on a residential and day basis.

Houston skill trainers Donte Mathis and Kenneth Gamble to work alongside an array of experienced coaches from the club and around the UK.

In addition to the presence of the NBA Hall of Fame inductee, he has managed to engage coaches from Houston, together with some of the UK’s leading Coaches in basketball development.

Our dedicated staff of 40 ensured that our child welfare programme was meticulous and every camper was treated to a very personal service. With campers from all over the country and as far away as India and Hong Kong it truly was a diverse experience!

“I am proud to be a partner with the City of Birmingham Basketball Club,” Olajuwon said. “It confirmed to me that there is a thriving basketball community in Birmingham and CoB Basketball Club is something I want to be involved in.

He (Hakeem) has surpassed expectations spending an amazing amount of time inspiring the campers – with care taken to ensure everyone is developed fully. We are truly blessed to have him here.”

Seeing all those young people, boys and girls, together with coaches and parents supporting all that was going on is how the game must be.”

Now age 54, Hakeem ‘The Dream’ Olajuwon is proving a man of great excellence, both on and off the court, as he follows daughter, Abi’s, ultimate dream – whilst making others, here in the UK – come true.

Club directors Kirk Dawes and Robert Palmer were delighted to be able to assemble a fantastic coaching staff including Camp Director Peter Mintoft and

ROYAL VISIT

His Imperial Majesty A

s a Very Special Royal Guest of Honour at ‘The Phoenix 7th Anniversary Gala Dinner & Awards Presentation 2017,’ the mere mention of the fact that King Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Head of Nigeria's Yoruba people and internationally revered monarch, was to make his first appearance in the UK’s second city of Birmingham. The very awareness of his presence is creating a level of attention that has not been seen in the city, nationally and internationally, for some time - and unparalleledd in times gone by. Highly respected by leaders throughout the world, His Imperial Majesty was previously invited to the United Kingdom earlier this year as the Special

18

Guest Speaker at this year’s Commonwealth Africa Summit - attended by Queen Elizabeth II – before heading to mainland Europe and further invites on his hectic schedule.

The third son of six children, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi insists: "I will lead by example, do things right and foster unity wherever I go."

As it is well known that he is never one to harbour supremacy over his people, on the same token, The Ooni, whilst always showing great humility, is a man of great fortitude, as he carried his elevated position with huge pride.

His grandiose stature on the world stage puts into context just how incredibly large an occasion his presence in Birmingham is, he admits: "I am on a mission," with his goals: “to unify Nigeria's Yoruba ethnic group throughout the world.”

For His Imperial Majesty to be in the UK is a major coup - not only for The Phoenix Newspaper in particular, but for the city of Birmingham in general.

His life transformed since he became King, he is a man of great pride and humility,

For the large number of guests – of varying magnitude – to be in the presence of King Adeyeye will prove to be a special occasion that will be talked about, by all.

The Ooni, 43, is preparing for an overwhelming reception – UK style - at this year’s Phoenix Newspaper 7th Anniversary Gala Dinner & Awards Presentation at the ICC Birmingham, on November 25.

he joyous sound of praise and worship rang loud and long in the ears of many, as through the day and evening, friends and family of Dr Luke Jonathan Brown and Jennifer Anne Comery gathered in two of the most prominent landmarks in the second city to celebrate their wedding day. With Andy Gordon and Oasis Church Birmingham providing worship for the assembled congregation at St Philip’s Cathedral, everyone was on top form as they prayed and sang for the soon to be Mr and Mrs Brown. Reverend Canon Nigel Hand led the celebration, guiding the bride, groom and congregation through the service with his own inimitable style.

20 20

Adrian Hurst gave the happy couple a few wise words of advice during his sermon, and with a solo performance by Debs Lawes and the worship band during the signing of the register, the service was almost complete. As the happy couple walked back down the aisle, drinks and canapes were served to all, before toasting the newlyweds who then posed for photos with their families and wedding party. Despite the weather not staying as dry as it could have, everybody filed outside for the confetti throw as the couple made their way to a family dinner with their nearest and dearest. But that wasn’t all she wrote, evening festivities moved everyone to the Banqueting Suite at Birmingham’s Council House, where a Caribbean style buffet dinner

our parents, family and friends for all their support in the preparations leading up to our wedding day - we could not have done it without them! “We would like to thank the Reverend-Canon Nigel Hand and the whole team from St Philip’s Cathedral for hosting our wedding ceremony. “The venue was stunning and all the guests commented on how great the service was. We would also like to thank Adrian Hurst and the worship band from Oasis Church Birmingham, for delivering the wedding message and leading us in songs. “Finally, we would like to thank Irene Allen from OPUS restaurant and Sam Forth from the Council House for hosting our wedding breakfast and evening reception.”

HOLIDAY AND TRAVEL

CruisE DOWN West Africa C

ruising the picturesque rich-inbeauty and history West Africa is on the increase, where you can travel to ports such as Takoradi and Tema in Ghana, Luderitz and Walvis Bay in Namibia, Dakar in Senegal, Banjul, the capital of the Gambia and situated at the mouth of country, or Mindelo in Cape Verde. Destinations also include ports and cities in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Togo, Benin, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and the Ivory Coast. Bordered on the west and south by the Atlantic Ocean, a cruise is the perfect way in which to discover West Africa.

22

Souvenirs cruisers could pick up at markets while on shore excursions from their West Africa cruises include Boubou's the typical dress of this region of Africa. The wide-sleeved robe dates back to the 12th century and is also known by the names Agbada, Babariga and K'sa. Other traditional artefacts that holidaymakers could haggle over include musical instruments like the Djembe drum. West Africa is also of historical importance in regards to the origins of the African slave trade and in Benin and Ghana tours along the old Slave Coast are available. While on the cruise holiday, passengers can sample tradi-

tional West African cuisine. Cooking in this region of Africa is light on meat and features root vegetables such as yams, cocoyams and cassava, in addition to cereal grains, okra, green peas, citrus fruits, plantains, rice, spices and blackeyed peas. Despite its proximity to Europe – just 8.5 miles separate Tarifa in Spain from the Moroccan coast – North Africa is far less popular with travellers, but the continent as a whole is vast and there are many fabulous and thrilling countries where tourism is easy and as safe as in any of the more obvious, mass-tourism destinations.

ADOPTION AND FOSTERING

Adoption in Nigeria

T

he Child's Right Act, 2003 provides for adoption of a child in Nigeria. An application for adoption is made to the High (Family) Court accompanied with the following documents; (a) Where the applicant is a married couple, their marriage certificate or a sworn declaration of marriage;(b) The birth certificate or sworn declaration of age of each applicant; (c) 2 passport photographs of each applicant; (d) A medical certificate of the fitness of the applicant from a Government hospital; and (e) Such other documents, requirements and information as the Court may require for the purposes of the adoption.

In practice, the Court prefers that an applicant must have fulfilled the condition precedent at the Child Welfare Department and obtain a report stating that the applicant is

a proper person to adopt the child. The report would accompany the application for adoption. On receipt of an application for adoption, the Court will then order

an investigation to be conducted by child development officers or a supervision officer or such other persons as the Court may determine, to enable the Court to assess the suitability of the applicant as an adopter and of the child to be adopted. In reaching a decision relating to the adoption of a child, the Court have regard to all the circumstances, first consideration being given to the need to safeguard and promote the welfare and the best interest of the child throughout the childhood of that child and ascertaining, as far as practicable, the wishes and feelings of the child regarding the decision and giving due consideration to those wishes and feelings, having regard to the age and understanding of the child.

Meet The Dreamer Reverend Esther Ajayi W

hen you first meet Revered Esther Abimbola Ajayi, you are stuck by something immediately. Her confidence in her faith, and in what she does emanates from her in waves. You may not have heard of Reverend Esther yet, but I can promise you that she will be at the forefront of a lot of major things in the near future. The charismatic and positive figure in front of me, clothed in pure white beautiful garments beams her trademark winning smile across the desk as we talk about the journey that she has taken, from humble

26

beginnings in Lagos State, Nigeria, to owning the Love of Christ Generation C&S Church in Clapham, an imposing and beautifully renovated listed building in its own right. Born in Lagos State, Nigeria, Reverend Esther praises God all the way back to her childhood, “I’ve been doing this since I was in the womb!” she exclaims, once again beaming that million dollar smile. “My name portrays my story, Abimbola means “you are born within the riches”, and God has been kind to me since my childhood.” The eldest daughter in the family, even

from her childhood her life has always been about prayer. “Prayer has always been a part of my life. I love telling God about it, I believe that with God you can achieve anything.” Looking up at some of the rich people that were around her during her upbringing, business has always been at the back of Reverend Esther’s mind, but ever since attending a grammar school for her secondary education, this woman of God has always known something special was in store for her.

“I have always been a dreamer,” states Reverend Esther,“and if I dream something, then it will come to pass. That may sound far fetched, but time and time again my dreams have come to fruition.” Since going to Bible School, and studying Sociology, where she received her diploma and Bachelor of Arts, there has been no stopping this powerhouse of a woman, who has had a singular point of focus for her entire life. “While I was at Bible School in Nigeria in 1993, I went into a trance and had a revelation, that God said he was going to find me a church. That the name of the church is going to be Love of Christ Generation. I didn’t write it down but it has always remained in my mind,” explains Reverend Ajayi with unbreakable conviction. “Several years later people started having the same visions, that I would own a church among white people and the church is going to shake the whole world.” “When I got pregnant, I said that I wanted a boy, and I said to God that I wanted a boy. Then I had a dream that I was carrying a boy and then I had a boy. “Then the second time, I said I would be happy if it was a boy again, and again I had the dream and lo and behold it was a boy once more! “Finally, I wanted a girl, and again a dream.” After coming in England

“I just want to spread the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” in 2004 with her husband and children, Reverend Esther set out to find this church that her dreams and others visions had described, and although it didn’t directly lead her to the church, it did bring her a 4th child, in the form of one of her daughters best friends. “During those early years, it was difficult, and in 2007 to 2010 it started getting worse, there was trepidation in the congregation and one by one everybody left the church except one child, the friend of my daughter,” said Reverend Ajayi as she looked into the distance, remembering. “Even this girl’s mother left, but she believed in my vision and my cause. She was the only person who was with me, and she stayed with me until we got the Church we are in today. It was at this point that I said that she is here, and she is now part of my family.” The Church that we sat in is located on Clapham Road, a stones throw from Clapham North Tube Station, and the only reason that Love of Christ Generation C&S Church is

there, is due to prayer and belief. “Someone visited me for prayer, and I prayed for them as I always do. But you never know who it is you are praying for, just that they need your prayer. You don’t know that they are a billionaire in hard currency and in return for what I did for them, they blessed me and the church with the money to buy this church.” At a cost of £5 million including renovations, paid outright, the Church is a beautiful monument in the centre of the community, and while its listed building restricts what can be done, what they have done has created a modern yet warm and beautiful place of worship. “It was like someone picking you up from the gutter, washing you and taking you to the palace , that is how this place feels for me. It is the Palace of Jesus and I believe he gave it to me on merited grace and favour, all the days of my life I will be grateful to Jesus.” The Love of Christ Generation C&S Church

“Whatever you do in life, put God first.” is open for all communities, all people, and is a welcoming and loving place. “The church is for everybody!” Reverend Esther emphasises loudly, “even if you are not in the white apparel, you can come celebrate Jesus. Christianity is all about love, God gave his only living son, anyone of any colour, any clothing, any background, come and lets celebrate. Everybody is welcome.” As a White Garment Church the congregation wear white to remind themselves of their purity, and as a visual reminder that your actions will stain your character, and thus your garment, but as the Reverend Mother says, even if you do not wear white, you are more than welcome to visit and celebrate with her. With all of Reverend Esther’s energy and enthusiasm, it is no surprise that her reach is far outside the walls of the church. With large scale events, like Celebrate The Comforter at the Excel taking place just a few months ago on July 29th, and community outreach projects both in the immediate vicinity of the church and abroad back to Africa, Reverend Esther has people at her heart. “I had a dream, and I saw a mammoth crowd in white, with blue, exchanging pleasantries, and people came on board saying yes we can

do it, and that started Celebrate The Comforter, it was a programme that the Lord started. “We had an amazing time, loads of people from America and Africa came, over 300 people from abroad, about 4500 people in total, it was glorious.” “After each of our worships every Sunday, we give food to the community, anyone that comes in here will eat free. The Lord has been good to us so we have to be good to people.” If Reverend Esther promises you something, know that she is good to her word. “When we bought this property from the Royal Association For Deaf People, I promised them the day that we came to inspect this place that if I got the church then I would give them the space to continue using for 5 years. Even now we allow them to use the property every week for both their under and over 55 groups every Tuesday and Wednesday.” “There are a lot of other Churches that we support especially in Africa, and Osun state, with Mountaintops in Africa. We brought lights to the Mountaintop, there was no electricity, but we supported them. Some we help with finishing their churches, the roofing and such.” Although the building is a stunning place of

worship, the church is looking for somewhere to expand to, as at their recent 10th Anniversary celebration event on September 3rd, the congregation overflowed everywhere! “We know we will have to move a little outside London, for about 25 acres, we have seen the picture of what it can be, and we believe and trust in the Lord to make it greater and bigger.” But their expansion in the UK is just the beginning, her vision to move all over the world has begun with home-grown talent, and the church has a number of students going to Bible School. “We want branches all over the world, and we breed leaders. We intend to go to America at the beginning of next year, I just want to spread the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” For anyone facing hardships in their life, or wanting to do something but don’t have the confidence or belief in themselves, Reverend Esther closed by quoting Ephesians 3:20 – “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us” “Whatever you do in life, put God first,” she said stoically, flashing that award-winning smile one final time, “That is a power that the Lord has put in you. You just need to make some little effort and this power is out. “When you put him first and make that effort, God will crown it, and then the sky is not just your limit, but it is the beginning of amazing things.”

Alistair Soyode:

Bridging The Gap T

he founder of BEN TV, Alistair Soyode, is a quiet, reserved figure. Softly spoken, but with a purpose and direction to every word he says. Growing up in the Northern part of Nigeria for most of his life, his parents were from the North and South of the country, so he calls himself a ‘Complete Nigerian.’ “The culture I grew up knowing is more the Northern culture, but as a person though I just want to be known as Nigerian.” Praising God as the one that gave him the strength and vision to do what he does, Alistair relives the CNN article that classified him as a farmer who became a global CEO. Alistair studied Agriculture and Irrigation Engineering in Katsina, before it was his love of sport that lead him to, at the time, find out what he wanted to do with his life. “I tried a variety of sports over the years, but I settled on football, and was on the junior team playing for a club, thinking that the bigger picture would be to find a foreign team and get signed to play.” More than two decades ago, Alistair arrived in the UK to play football, but

with the cold, the snow, and coming from a hot climate in Africa, it was all too much and he realised that a football career wasn’t on the cards for him. “I thought, ‘there must be something else to do…’” explained Alistair, “so I tried various businesses to make ends meet.” “As an entrepreneur I started in the telecommunications industry, selling mobile phones as a retailer. At that time Nigeria had just introduced the telecoms industry into the country, so I published the first magazine on telecommunications in Nigeria.” From telecommunications, Alistair made a leap into the TV business with no formal television, media or communication background, Alistair did what many entrepreneurs do; he saw a gap in the market and he jumped on it. “There was no representation of fully ethnic content on television at the time,” mused Alistair, “and with many people in the country that are from Africa, The Caribbean or indeed Black British, there was no representation for these people on TV.” “Back then, Nigeria as a nation was seen as a bad influence on the continent, with all Nigerians being tarred

with the same brush,” Alistair reflected, “I knew personally that there were many positive Nigerians doing wonderful things around the world, people in sports and movie industries, but you just don’t hear about them.” Alistair figured that if no one knows about Nigeria or the wider black community, then someone should show them the truth. “Lets create something positive.” But moving from place to place, trying to find programmes and people who believed in the project that he had was difficult for Alistair. “Finding someone to give you what is in truth quite a lot of money to back your idea, when you have no experience was a challenge.” A few years before the launch, when he applied for the licence, it was very difficult, as no one had come across a channel like the one that was being proposed, so BEN TV became a guinea pig for the changes in legislation. “Being the first black oriented TV station that is culturally original, based in the UK, started by myself and still broadcasting, still on air is a massive thing for me.” Between 1998 and 2002, Alistair was lining up the facilities, satellites, resources, programmes and supplies to start the channel, before joining the satellite company that he has worked with forever in South America to see the launching of his own particular satellite.

“Yes we can, yes we will make Nigeria better and greater” “When the satellite was going up, wherever it was going to and knowing it was for me was an amazing feeling,” beamed Alistair. Based in the heart of London, BEN TV is by its own words, ‘Europe’s 1st Ethnic oriented Television Channel,’ and serves a huge audience, including a range of cultured programming to transform, empower and challenge the conventional perception of Africa, Caribbean and African-descendants in Diaspora since 2002. BEN TV doesn’t receive funding like the mainstream channels, nor through TV licencing like the BBC, and for Alistair it is a Catch-22 situation. “For us to go more mainstream and reach a bigger audience, we need the financial backing, but by doing so we could lost touch with the communities that make us who we are.” Next on the horizon for BEN – massive

capital intensive business. “The community is not made up of big time spenders, how many companies do we have that are African or Caribbean owned with large spending power, that’s not many, you can probably count them on one hand.” “What I stand for, what I’ve always stood for and what I will keep standing for is the integrity of the people. I would love to take the platform bigger in the weeks and months to come.” As the interview continued, you couldn’t help but be taken in by his manner, his charm, and most importantly his belief in what he was saying. Every word was carefully chosen with a clear end picture in sight. Television isn’t the only love of Alistair’s life though,“For me personally the only thing I live and breathe and get excited about right now is Nigeria,” explained Alistair, “I don’t see the

challenges, I see the opportunities.” Alistair isn’t just looking at investment in the country, he is looking at change, and reform for the country. “Optimistically dreaming, if we stand for the change, we will be there to create the change. As long as we stand there and believe, we will be victorious.” Alistair is looking for Nigerians who are professionals, businesspeople and entrepreneurs to look at the political parties and find one that aligns with you that they can join. “The Elders have said that the youth should join politics, and it is now with humility and respect that we are answering the call, we are here and ready.” Passionately, almost worth of standing at a podium in front of a huge crowd at a rally, Alistair continued, “I see no state, no religion, the only thing I see is one Nigeria. I don’t believe we need to fight, I don’t believe we need to be at war, I believe that we need to give peace a chance. A peace that we have never experienced before is coming, but only if we elect the right people. “Yes we can, yes we will make Nigeria better and greater, yes people who are positive about a greater country will support us.We want to better Nigeria, have an equal Nigeria with a better education system. Alistair believes that a team of young inspired people alongside the elders could rule Nigeria in 2019, to help start to create the change that is so needed. “I am not in business to make money, but to sustain. We are not going into politics to make money, but because we believe that this ideal of a new Nigeria is enough. “With almost every industry in the world having a Nigerian in it, and the richest people in Africa of Nigerian descent, Nigeria as a nation need to give their people a chance.” To showcase these people, engaging them and the youth to push forward to a better tomorrow for Nigeria is very high on Alistair’s list of priorities. For the young people, regardless of your cultural heritage, Alistair has a few words of wisdom that is sage advice from someone who has lived by his words. “Regardless what you want to do with your life, just look at what you want to achieve, who do you want to work with? Always look to the top, whether that is a singer, an actor, a presenter, a business owner, look at them and ask how did they get there. Start to emulate what they did and you’ll be well on your way.”

Insatiable Hamilton is ‘Driven’ to More Success

T

he Mexican Grand Prix was a race like no other giving Lewis Hamilton the 2017 Formula One World Champion - the Mercedes driver securing his fourth drivers' title two races prior to the season finale. Despite World title rival Sebastian Vettel finishing in P4 ahead of Hamilton, the latter still had a lead of 56 points over the German with only 50 points, at that time, to play for in the final two rounds in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

And, in sealing the 2017 Formula 1 championship title it makes the Hertfordshire man the most successful British driver – ever! Deflated, but magnanimous in defeat, Vettel said "He deserves it. He had a very, very strong season. Two races to go he clinches the championship. In a straight fight, he was the better man. So, congratulations." For Hamilton and Mercedes, the party started with the Briton adding his name to an elite list of F1 drivers which in-

fought back to finish ninth after a firstlap clash with his title rival Sebastian Vettel, as a potential major threat. "Max is just sitting there waiting to take it," Hamilton said. "So I have to raise the game another level in order to stay ahead of him and that motivates me, so there is my motivation already for next year."

clude the likes of Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher - Lewis inching closer to the all-time F1 title of the German at seven. Whilst others are forever chasing him in his slipstream, one of Britain’s greatest ever sports personality still, despite unrivalled success, is still hungry for more by getting to the magnificent ‘7.’

He now holds the all-time record for pole positions; putting together at least five qualifying laps to rank with the best he has ever done - Montreal, Baku, Silverstone, Monza and Malaysia were each breath-taking in the way they redefined the perception of what was possible.

Already in the record books as the youngest-ever formula one grand prix world champion when winning the title I 2008 season with McLaren, many believe his insatiable thirst for ultimate glory will see him driving on until, at least, he gets to eight.

The race that finally clinched it was a bit messy, through no fault of his own, but the season in which Lewis Hamilton won his fourth world title has underlined his status as not only one of Formula 1's all-time greats, but one of sport’s all-time greats.

In fact he is looking to surpass Schumacher by 2020. He said: "I have to figure out the pros and cons from this year and see how I can improve. I want to be better next year.

“I love driving now more than ever,” Hamilton said. “I feel like I am driving better than ever, and I feel the most whole as a driver that I have ever been which is a great feeling.

The challenge is going to be even bigger from Ferrari and Red Bull. F1 doesn't sleep. It doesn't stand still. There is always someone waiting to take my position."

Who knows if we are going to get anywhere near Michael Schumacher’s record of seven championships? I don’t have a desire to chase that, but records are there to be broken so at some stage someone will break them. Whether it is me, I can’t tell you.”

He singled out Red Bull's young Dutch driver, Max Verstappen, who dominated the Mexican Grand Prix as Hamilton

High Blood Pressure Tips to help to manage the ‘Symptomless Silent Killer’

O

ver the years, health challenges among third world nations stems from ways of controlling malaria and communicable diseases.

percentage of adults 51 percent for males and 49 percent for females. The WHO blamed this on increasing urbanization and unhealthy lifestyles.

This trend has however changed as developing countries in Africa and Nigeria in particular now battle with numerous cases of high blood pressure also known as hypertension amongst its citizenry.

The causes of high blood pressure cannot be clearly stated but according to medical experts, high blood pressure generally develops over a long period of time and it affects almost everyone.

Recent statistics emanating from medical professionals in the country reveal that high blood pressure is no longer associated with age as it used to be.

Its causes ranges from too much intake of salt, lack of exercise, inadequate fruits and vegetables in diets, too much alcohol, stress, genetics, thyroid problems and also lack of sleep.

High blood pressure (hypertension) can be present in the body without the individual showing any symptoms leading a damage of the blood vessels which can lead to a heart attack and stroke in severe cases hence, the reason it is usually referred to as a ‘symptomless silent killer’.

Some of its symptoms include nose bleeds, anxiety, severe headaches, shortness of breaths etc. The good news is that it can easily be detected and once you know you have high blood pressure, you can learn to control and manage it.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that 46 percent of adults in the African region countries are hypertensive with adult males having a higher mean systolic (contraction of the heart) blood pressure than adult females.

While there is no cure, it is advised that medications be used as prescribed and making positive changes can help reduce the risk of a heart disease and enhance the quality of life. It is also important to know your numbers.

The report also has Nigeria topping the list of males and females with highest

The best way to know if your blood pressure is in a healthy or unhealthy range

is to get it checked. If high blood pressure is diagnosed, regular monitoring can help monitor confirm if you have high blood pressure, detect patterns and alert you on any changes. It will also indicate if your changes are working. However, some of its preventive measures for hypertensive patients are regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, stress management (rest and sleep), avoid smoking and alcohol, reduction in salt intake and maintain a healthy weight. There are also certain foods that have been known to help lower blood pressure. They are; grape fruit, guava, garlic, black berries, skimmed milk, spinach, potatoes, soya beans, banana, water melon, lemon, kiwi fruit etc. Also drinking fresh organic coconut water preferably in the morning helps to reduce blood pressure. High blood pressure is a serious health condition that can be effectively managed if not prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle; you can reduce high blood pressure, prevent or delay the development of high blood pressure, enhance effectiveness of blood pressure medications and also lower your risk of a heart attack, heart failure or stroke.

SDG Build Health Centres, Classrooms and Boreholes in Plateau

S

pearheaded by the United Nations through a deliberative process involving its 193 Member States, Sustainable Development Goals have built and furnished a total of 38 health centres across a number of communities in Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Shendam, Kanke and Jos North Local Government Areas in the Plateau State, in Nigeria. The project, which also includes the construction and furnishing of 38 class-

rooms, is part of a resolution as part of a broad intergovernmental agreement that acts as the Post 2015 Development Agenda. Coordinator, Samuel Damla, said that it also constructed 17 boreholes and seven VIP toilets. “The projects are mostly in the rural areas because our mandate is to alleviate the sufferings of the people in the rural communities,” he said; “Especially in the areas of education, health, water, and sanitation. We have also constructed boreholes and VIP toilets to promote personal hygiene in some of the communities.” Damla emphasized SDGs goal of empowering the young in the country by training up to 2,000 youths on Google digital production and programming, saying that it would provide the right knowledge to harness the potential of the digital world. He said: “The digital world has lots of

l Samuel Damla opportunities and could create many employment opportunities.” He also said that funds would soon be made available to the SDGs office following the payment of N600 million counterpart funds by the state government.
