JLP Celebrate Victory O over PNP & Portia n the 25th February, the opposition party, the Jamaica Labor Party, led by Andrew Holness captured 33 spots in the 63-seat parliament - enough to form a government. Discontent is high among Jamaicans due to a poor economy and high crime rates, leading to only a 47% turnout. This result means the Peoples Na-
tional Party led by the first female prime minister to govern the largest English-speaking country in the Caribbean has been defeated. Following the announcement of the results, Holness was greeted by his cheering supporters at his party headquarters. Despite the win, it wasn’t an easy fight against the PNP and Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller.

day before Chinese New Year, which this year fell on Monday February 8th 2016, thousands made their way to Birmingham’s Chinatown area of the city. Sunday 7th saw the spectacle of Chinese New Year under a cloudy, yet thankfully rain-free sky. Kicking off with Dragon Dancers parading their way across the city centre to the Arcadian, bringing the crowds with them. Featuring Martial Arts Demonstrations from Praying Mantis Kung Fu Club, Academy of Wing Chun and Southern Mantis Kung Fu among others, alongside a magic show be WenHan from the UK Chinese Arts and Culture Association, there was something for everyone on stage. Lion Dances by Choy Lee Fut Martial Arts took place throughout the afternoons festivities, both in the centre of the Arcadian Centre, and in front of the Hippodrome (above). Due to the ongoing budget cuts at the Birmingham City Council, the funding for the Chinese New Year celebrations was lost this year, leading to speculation that the event may not even go ahead. Thankfully, despite the loss of funding the Southside community raised the funds required to ensure that the festivities could continue. With new partnerships including Twycross Zoo, Grand Central, Deliveroo and Manchester Airport, the celebrations drew more than 25,000 people to the Arcadian and surrounding areas. Julia Chance, Southside BID manager, said: “The action taken is a true testament to the community spirit of the people who live, work and visit Southside and we’re truly touched by their continued support. Kung Hei Fat Choy - Happy New Year to everyone in the Year of the Monkey.

l Haunting My Ghosts is the first book by Noëlle Blake
aureen Goodin-Pryce is a multitalented and multifaceted individual. Born in Birmingham, the mother of two is an artist, an author, and an interior designer, but this creative maestro doesn’t rest on her laurels, as up until a few years ago, these passions took a back seat in her life, just waiting to burst through. Maureen had worked in a number of jobs, starting out as a nursery nurse, carer, care manager and most recently as a project manager for a local authority, but no matter what job she has been in there has always been a thread connecting them. “In all of my 9 to 5 employment in the past, at the heart of them I’ve always tried to enable someone else to better their life through whatever means were available to me in that position,” explains Maureen, “if I couldn’t utilise my creative talents, at least I could support someone else to realise theirs.” But being made redundant 2 years
The Phoenix – March 2016
What Is Noëlle Blake? ago gave Maureen the chance to make a change. “I had actually managed to secure an alternative post, however, the break gave me an opportunity to re-evaluate my aspirations and determine whether it was really what I wanted to do. So I asked myself, if I could choose what I wanted to do, what would it look like?” “I had always painted, written, drew and made things since about the age of 9 when I made a teddy bear, which the person I gave it to still has to this day! Creating is just something I’ve always done. “ It was at this time that Maureen decided to bring her creative talents to the forefront, and so Noëlle Blake was born. “Noëlle Blake is actually my name - Noëlle is my middle name, and Blake is my mother’s maiden name. My mother was a very strong, formidable and amazing woman. She has passed away now, but using her name was an opportunity for me to honour her, and I know that completing my
book would have been something she would be thrilled about.” “Noelle Blake is my brand as well as the pen name that I write under. It encapsulates all the creative and collaborative work that I produce, working with the team of professionals that support me.” Having written short stories for close family and friend’s eyes only for many years, Maureen chose one of those short stories to develop and subsequently complete. In 2012, Maureen self-published her first fiction novel; Haunting My Ghosts, which won Editor’s Choice and Rising Star awards from the publishers. The psychology graduate used this completely fictitious piece of work to create relatable characters, whose emotional journey’s she hopes everyone can understand and learn from, regardless of their own backgrounds and experiences. In 2013 after being asked to have her story represented as a part of Black History Month at Walsall
Library, Superintendent Keith Fraser from West Midlands Police reviewed the book and came along to speak about it. “It was a real moment for me to have somebody that I hold in high regard read my book and absolutely understand all the different levels that I’d tried to create within it.” The promotion still continues, and in April she will be touring as part of ‘Still I Rise’, a group of newly published female authors, visiting Leamington Spa, Birmingham and Bristol, and with any luck en route to the USA to explore publishing opportunities in the States. While all this is going on, Maureen began setting up the Interior Design arm of Noëlle Blake. “I’ve now got a team of carpenters, decorators, seamstresses, upholsterers, re-upholsterers, woodwork finishers, artists and graphic designers. So depending on what is required for a client I can tap into the appropriate resources.” With such a diverse team and

some boasting over 30 years of experience in their respective fields, Noëlle Blake has found a number of niche markets that they have already made their mark in, and to this end, the business has three main branches. Next Level Business Branding – understanding the essence of a business or organisation, and establishing that within their physical environment, going beyond just a logo. Styling Events – with such a talented team, themed events and set designs are easily within reach. Interior Design – everything from bespoke silk floral arrangements, through sourcing a bespoke piece of furniture, to a room redesign or restyling and coordinating a complete home. “The work we do covers a range of styles from Retro to Rococo, Baroque to Bauhaus so there is something for everyone. I love it because everyone in my team has a very different style, but we have the same eye.” “I enjoy the challenge of being able to create something, be it written work or an artistic piece, that resonates on more than one level.” Noëlle Blake has already been noticed by some big names, with Heads Up Business commissioning her to style all 4 of their networking events this
year, beginning with their International Women’s Day event in March. April will see products from the Noëlle Blake collection available to purchase directly from the website, consisting of a combination of newly sourced home interior items from around the world, one off Noëlle Blake branded home interiors and products available to order. Of course, all of these successes have come from hard work and a strong mental attitude, but Maureen hasn’t got here alone; “I’ve got to thank Harley and Ethan, my two boys, and my husband Barrington who are my rocks. They’ve been so supportive and helped me every step of the way to realise my dreams.” To all the budding creatives out there, Maureen has a few words of wisdom; “Don’t let the creeping doubts tell you that you can’t achieve your dreams, because with hard work, commitment and determination you absolutely can. It is important to recognise that things may often be difficult, but they are not impossible.” Noëlle Blake is your one-stopshop for all of your design and interior needs, and if you look out in the near future, Noëlle Blake may just become the next bestselling author too.

t was a double celebration at the Birmingham Community Association as not only was it the launch of its 50th year celebration, but it also marked a remarked milestone in one young woman’s life… with a celebration of life itself. As the BCA welcomed all to its Jenkins Street, Small Heath base to announce the year of special events ahead, it was the very presence of Lakeita Robinson which was all the more reason to celebrate. The recently turned 18 year old student was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2014, but, after 9 cycles of chemotherapy, 4 grueling weeks of radiotherapy and 2 bone marrow transplants, she had more reason than any to celebrate…plus it was her birthday. Ladywood resident, Lakeita, was truly the ‘Belle of the Ball’ that night as family and friends gathered to bring to an end a day of activities, in support of, and to mark, the Teenage Cancer Trust, This Girl Can and Birmingham

Wolverhampton project aimed at helping people become more ‘job ready’ and find work is celebrating helping almost 3,000 residents access support. The Neighbourhood Employment and Skills Service (NESS) was set up in 2011 as a £2 million project funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The project was match funded by seven partners from across the city – YMCA, TLC College, Bilston Resource Centre, Access to Business, Jobchange, TOPPS Training and Gloucester Street Community Centre, who all form the Wolverhampton Learning Platform. They delivered a network of independent Community Learning Centres collaborating across the city to provide an integrated package of support. The partners came together in the Mayor’s Parlour at Wolverhampton Civic Centre to celebrate
their success. Councillor John Reynolds, City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: “NESS has been recognised as a valuable resource to the city and has helped improve opportunities for people looking to develop new skills and also seek employment or volunteering opportunities.” The project was due to end in July 2014 but due to its success it received further ERDF funding and continued until December 2015. The Wolverhampton Learning Platform continues to offer information, advice and guidance and training to support residents into work. They are currently in the process of formulating their strategy to help people in Wolverhampton and the wider Black Country area to achieve their career and learning aspirations. Part of this process is to expand their services and develop their holistic offer of support.
British Gas providing free boilers to residents
N
ew research has revealed that most Birmingham residents may be unaware of an energy efficiency scheme being delivered by British Gas which provides free gas boilers to low income households. British Gas will provide free or low cost gas boilers as part of its commitment to delivering energy efficiency measures to homes across Britain in 2016. This will include homes in Birmingham. Despite awareness of the importance and cost implications of efficient boilers, residents consider upgrading their smartphones, tablets and laptops to be of greater importance. Angela Needle at British Gas said; “This new scheme will deliver more efficient boilers to more people for less money. In fact for most eligible Birmingham residents it will be completely free.” The scheme is only open to those in receipt of income related benefits such as Pension Credit, Universal Credit and Job Seekers Allowance. It is not exclusive to British Gas customers, it is also open to tenants as well as homeowners meaning thousands of residents are eligible for the scheme.

political interventions – more than 1.5 billion people still live in fragile and conflict affected countries (United Nations, news and media); inflation and recession reports indicate that the global economy could be on the verge of a once in a generation transformation. The effect of the changes is that most entrepreneurs and business are expected to exercise leadership excellence and cope with changes, whilst facing uncertainty and huge pressures. Leadership excellence is required to steer entrepreneurial innovations and business to grow and develop during such turbulence and to achieve their goals and vision.
So what is leadership?
We (Neslyn.com) recognise that leadership is a much-debated concept and people’s perceptions will be influenced by the constructions that they have and the values that they ascribe to leadership. with good management skills but without vision had average team performance. As Joel Barker says: “Vision without action is only a dream, action without vision passes the time, vision with action can change the world”. Jess Stoner et al paints a vivid picture with the quote: “Leadership is about going somewhere. If you and your people don’t know where you are going, your leadership doesn’t matter.”
leadership vision is learning how to ask intelligent questions. It is important that you adopt a future mind-set and start with the end in mind – start at the accomplishment of the vision, in order to eventually tell the story of how you got there. The accomplishment of your vision is helped by creating a vision board and having unrealistic, big audacious goals, in so doing you reach for the stars and as Les Brown says: “reach for the stars and you may land on the moon.” sic and share the story with staff and key stakeholders. This is what is called creating an inspiring vision of the future. Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. -Warren Bennis to be around you by choice. The greatest leaders have magnetism that result in a natural following of people who have assessed the situation and agree to go in the same direction as the leader to accomplish the goals. This is what Jim Collins refers to as being on the same bus.
Here, we offer a working definition of leadership: Leadership is the willingness to be in service to generate transformation to create an environment and the space for people to perform at their best. We believe that leadership is about enabling others to be their best, best in skills and expertise, best in providing and developing a service, best in creating value and serving customers. Leadership excellence is grounded in valuing people, creating diverse teams and harnessing diverse skills to bring about innovation and excellence in product development, sales, marketing, service delivery and customer care. Furthermore, the way you are (in other words your being) as a leader will be influenced by your personality, values and your view of the world. The literature on leadership abounds with leadership styles
and types. Your leadership style has an important bearing on how you create a climate in which people can grow and offer
value. Hence it is important for you as the leader (whether you are leading your family, a team of people or your business) to be aware of your being – who you are? How you show up, (by that I mean the way you occur to others) matters, so consider – Are you communicating in such a way that you inspire and draw people to you or are you tying people up in knots and driving them away from you? To become an even more outstanding leader you need to analyse your leadership style and determine the scope and capacity of your leadership. How are you building the leadership of your children, family members, your team members and the staff within your business? Are you leading your life so that you are giving attention to what matters most to you?
Do you know your leadership style?
Manfred Kets de Vries describes eight Archetypes of Leadership – namely, the strategist, the change catalyst, the transactor, the builder, the innovator, the processor, the coach and the communicator.
Which of the aforementioned styles best fit you?
An important key to successful leadership is to know how, when and how much of a particular style is needed at specific points and in specific situation. When is it important for you to lead with vision? When to lead through people and with drive to maximize performance? It is equally important that you know how to build your team so that vision and strategy, creativity and innovation, assessment and development, analysis of

Review and evaluate the milestones.
Simply defined, a milestone is a significant point in development. Evaluation tells you if you are on the path to success and when you have arrived. So it is essential that you track, measure and report your results. Effective monitoring, review and evaluation will provide you with information on emerging issues, performance improvement and ensure accountability. It is important that you plan from the start, what will be measured, how it will be measured, for what purpose and who will receive the information. Start by asking good evalu-
ation questions: Are we doing the right thing? Are we doing it the right way? Are there better ways of achieving results? he manhole cover and drain beneath your feet could receive a makeover as students from Birmingham City University aim to develop its design and/or function as part of a joint collaboration project with Saint-Gobain PAM UK, the premier supplier of ductile iron and cast iron products to the UK's key utilities, telecoms, highways, civil engineering, construction and housing companies. MA Product Design and Design Visualisation students will be tasked to come up with solutions to address both design and function and explore how such products might help solve infrastructure challenges such as pollution, flooding or increasing population density which could result in water supply or traffic management problems. Commenting on the collabor-
ation with BCU, Saint-Gobain PAM’s Mark Esling said: “As a company we are committed to innovation and this project enables us to look beyond our current research and development. Our challenge is to consider our environment and how we can help make a sustainable habitat for the future. We already explore how we can reduce our carbon footprint as an organisation, but we must also address how to be proactive in how we shape our living environment. By partnering with Birmingham City University we can access fresh thinking and talent and get the chance to look at things from a different perspective. The university is well known for product design and its MA courses attract some of the brightest minds in this area, so we couldn’t ask for a better partner”.
“It is also very important for us as a company to support the future of research and development in engineering and attract the people who will make a difference in years to come.” MA Product Design Course Director at Birmingham City University, Nuno Lourinho, said: “We have a strong tradition of working closely with industry partners. Our students really benefit from such collaboration as they can engage with and understand industry needs and working processes. It gives them a real advantage when they qualify and seek employment.” The project is being run as part of the students’ Masters degree and as a competition with the winner receiving a £1000 prize. They will also have the opportunity to see their design developed as a prototype.

Result! GCSE students praised as outcomes improve
S
tudents and teachers have been praised after released Key Stage 4 data showed GCSE results improved in Wolverhampton last year – helping the city move up 18 places in national league tables. It makes Wolverhampton the most improved local authority in the West Midlands in 2015. Wolverhampton students continued to perform strongly in vocational subjects last year, coming a hugely impressive third in the country with an average points score of 740.4 at Key Stage 5. In addition, the city is ranked
14th nationally for all Level 3 qualifications – A-level, academic and vocational – with an average points score of 753.1 per student, compared to 717.8 nationally. Councillor Claire Darke, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Education, said: "We saw a strong performance by students in their GCSEs last year, and I'd like to congratulate them, their teachers and parents on their achievements. We are now seeing improved outcomes for children and young people across the board, from our very youngest pupils to those
leaving school and heading into further education, employment or training for the first time. More than three quarters of our pupils are now attending schools that are rated either good or outstanding by Ofsted, and we expect that number to increase still further in the coming months. We’ve also invested £270m through our Building Schools for the Future programme, which has improved secondary school buildings and facilities to provide the best educational environment. We won’t be resting on our laurels as we are determined to improve outcomes still further."

Butterfly Books aims to raise awareness of future careers for children at a young age to help reduce skills shortages and promote more traditional male jobs to young women. Julie Spinks, of WaterSafe, said: “We were delighted to work with the authors on the ‘My Mummy is a Plumber’ book which shows how she saves the day to tackle burst water pipes and overflowing toilets. WaterSafe is keen to support young
people coming into plumbing, particularly through apprentice schemes, and this books supports our own campaign, Get Girls Plumbing, to encourage more women to consider plumbing as a career.” Butterfly Books has already released ‘My Mummy is an Engineer’ and is also working on ‘My Mummy is a Scientist’. A ‘My Daddy’ series is due to follow. Author Kerrine Bryan, said: “We hope that the books will educate children on the world of work, and the wider range of careers open to them. In creating My Mummy is a Plumber we also learnt a bit about basic plumbing too.”

Specialising in watercolour masterpieces of animals, the Tettenhall-based artist is currently displaying some of her work at the Lichfield Street gallery as part of the Wolverhampton Society of Artists’ exhibition. Following a contract recently secured with a major giftware distributor, Sarah will see her work printed on a range of items. She was at the gallery on Saturday
20 February encouraging other artists to pick up a brush and get painting. Councillor John Reynolds, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “The Wolverhampton Society of Artists show has been a wonderful opportunity to showcase our home-grown talent.”
"Many of the members have held workshops in the gallery to promote their work and Sarah’s will be the final one before the exhibition ends on Saturday 27 February." "We are always pleased to host the exhibition because it is such a great showcase of all the artistic talent we have in the city.”

CAMARA’S SPOTLIGHT
Waltham Forest twinning association
W
hilst I knew that there was a twinning Association in the Borough of Waltham Forest, where I live, I had no idea of how much involvement they had with the community and wider communities until Lucy an old family friend ask me if I would be interested in performing for them at a Fund Raising show and dance to be held on Friday 11th March. Of course I had to look further into the Association and was pretty impressed with their enthusiasm along with the results that are achieving and definitely worth me including in CAMARA’S SPOTLIGHT. So without further ado I would like to introduce you to Waltham Forest Antigua & Barbuda and Dominica Twinning Association. I got most of the information by speaking to Ms Mervin CaesarJohn who is the Public Relations Officer and some from the web. I asked where and when this association was born and by whom and was told that The Twinning Association arose from an initiative by Dominican born Mr Franklyn Georges who was a Councillor of the London Borough of Waltham Forest who was also the first African-Caribbean person to become the Mayor of Waltham Forest in the 1990/91 municipal year. His wife Veronica was born in Antigua of Dominican parentage so it was with the support of local Dominican and Antiguan com-

munity groups and Associations working with the Council’s Race Equality Unit. It was then that educational and cultural trips for local children to the islands were organised with much success. Subsequently in 1992 the idea of twinning was discussed at a public meeting and this was followed by the establishment of a steering committee leading to the signing of the Town Twinning Charters in April 1999. The objectives were and still are mainly to promote friendship, information exchange and mutual understanding of cultural, recreational and commercial activities of the linked areas. The Twinning Association would organise fund-raising activities and seek other sources

of funding to achieve its aims. Membership, voting rights and duties are governed by the Twinning Association’s Constitution. Some of the past and present activities have involved taking 12 children to Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica from the UK. Inviting the Antiguan and Barbuda and Dominican High Commissioners to the LBWF Town Hall. Hosting a public meeting and a reception for the then Prime Minister of Dominica, Mr Roosevelt Douglas. There have been many flag raising ceremonies and the fund raising has been tireless with sponsored health walks, sponsored history and heritage walks including coach trips and cultural events. Some of the funds raised in the last 5 years have gone towards scholarships for 3 young people to attend schools in Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica. On a recent Education delegation visit to Antigua one of the young people who has received the Twinning Association’s assistance said that she really appreciated the support as without it she would have been unable to complete her studies. She was able to use the funds for a much needed pair of reading glasses, exercise books and other school supplies. She will be completing her secondary school education and hopes to attend college to pursue
a career in pathology. I asked if a further support/ funding would be made available to these young people or to any more young people? Mervin replied that they were reviewing the best way to use the funds to benefit a wider range of students. In 2014 Waltham Forest Twinning Association Launched Links and Partnerships programme in 2014 and is also in with Holy Family Catholic School to run free ‘Silver Surfers’ IT workshops. These workshops are ongoing. In 2015 the Twinning Association celebrated 16 years since signing the Twinning Charters. This month February 2016 was the Education delegation’s visit to the twinned areas in Antigua and Dominica to cement the Links and Partnerships formed as part of the programme. I was pretty impressed that The Leyton and Leytonstone Historical Society, our partner schools, the Lydiard (Educators) group and Voluntary Action for Waltham Forest are supporters and of course the association is looking for more partners who share their objectives and passion. The answer to my enquiry of who could be involved or just become a member was that Membership is open to anyone with connections with the twinned areas and membership fee for the year were: £4 per Individual £6 per Family £12 per voluntary Organisations and £20 for Corporations. My thoughts are that I am also sure that donations would be most welcome for such an amazing charity. Mervin states that “the vision for Waltham Forest, Antigua & Barbuda and Dominica Twinning Association is being reviewed as
we become more active but our motto is Sharing our culture and heritage”. My final question for Mervin was who would benefit from the
The Phoenix – March 2016
Fundraising show that I am to perform at on Saturday March 11th. It was easy to understand her enthusiasm when she explained being able to help the families who were affected most by the tropical storm! “We visited several sites and villages during the delegation trip this month and spoke to many affected individuals. We now have to take appropriate steps to ensure that the funds that we raise will make a difference to them in whatever way possible. We also hope that the community in Waltham Forest will come together and experience other cultures”. Mervin continues with a note of thanks with “We appreciate all the support we’ve received from the community and council so far while we continue to grow the Twinning Association”. The Mayor of Waltham Forest is the patron of the Twinning Association and at the main Town Hall gates the sign states that “Waltham Forest is twinned with Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica”. Thank you Mervin I am looking forward what looks to be an amazing evening of entertainment! Contact: wfta.eventbrite.com fb.com/wftwinningassociation twitter.com/wftassociation

Birmingham City Council prosecuted the business after environmental health officers visiting the Chinese takeaway restaurant on 16 February 2015 found dirty conditions throughout the kitchen and no evidence staff handling and preparing food had received any food hygiene training. he Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce will once again support blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia as its chosen charity for 2016 after a successful partnership last year raised nearly £10,000. President of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce Greg Lowson chose Cure Leukaemia last year and the organisation will once again raise funds throughout the year. Last year’s £10,000 in fundraising through quizzes, a summer barbeque, Christmas lunch and a prize draw at its annual business dinner and awards will help access £100,000 worth in potentially life-saving treatments for blood cancer patients in the Midlands. Cure Leukaemia will once again benefit from funds raised from the business dinner and awards event in April and a host of further fundraising events during 2016. Greg, who is also the Head of the Birmingham office of legal firm Pinsent Masons, said “I’m delighted the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce raise such a fantastic figure for Cure Leukaemia in 2015 and I’m sure every effort will be
made to raise even more funds in 2016.” “As a Trustee of Cure Leukaemia I know the tremendous work being done by Professor Charlie Craddock CBE and his team at the Centre for Clinical Haematology and across the Midlands to deliver word first treatments to patients battling blood cancer in our region.” Cure Leukaemia Trustee and CEO at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Paul Faulkner said: “I have been involved with Cure Leukaemia in a personal capacity for a number of years, and saw at close quarters the amazing work Cure Leukaemia supports when the then Aston Villa Captain Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2012. The Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce are proud to support THE charity.” Jackie Kelly the Head of Corporate Partnerships at Cure Leukaemia said, “We are honoured to be supported by the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce again in 2016. The £10,000 raised in 2015 will do so much to help patients fighting this dreadful disease and we look forward to working with the Chamber in the year ahead.”
yber security, financial crime and the latest regulatory reporting changes were all on the agenda at PricewaterhouseCoopers’ briefing to Midlands’ financial services organizations. As revealed in the Cyber Security Forum Initiative’s (CSFI) latest global annual survey ‘Banking Banana Skins 2015,’ conducted in association with PwC, UK bankers now place fears of cyber crime at the top of a list of 24 possible risks to banks. And in PwC’s most recent ‘Global CEO Survey,’ released in January 2016, almost three-quarters (74%) of chief executive officers in the UK rate cyber security as the third biggest risk to their company after over regulation and geopolitical uncertainty. Christian Toon, cyber security expert at PwC in the Midlands said: “Banks are seen as prime targets for financial crime, particularly cyber crime, and this has now eclipsed fears of an economic
l Christian Toon slump or the fallout from intense regulation among the UK banking community. Although much work has been done by banks and their regulators to strengthen risk controls, banks still have more to do to address the scale of risk and its ever-changing nature.” At PwC, we encourage our clients in the Midlands to put in place steps to defend themselves against cyber crime, including building an intelligence-led defense enabling rapid cyber response, understanding and managing risk, and building and maintaining a secure culture where people are aware of their critical security decisions.” PwC’s financial services leader in the Midlands, David Roper, said: “The regulators believe that holding individuals to account is a key component of effective regulation and the proposed Senior Management Regime framework is fundamental to improving culture and restoring trust within the financial services sector. Given the tight timeframes to implement the regime, we understand that the design, roll out and embedding of the necessary framework has posed a number of challenges for firms.” Other topics discussed were FCA updates including regulator reporting and supervisory regime changes and Mortgage Credit Directive.

Parade of all parades to hit city streets
F
rom Dublin to Birmingham, Boston to Lagos, for everyone who loves a parade, there will be none quite like the St Patrick’s Parade – whether it be in any other the aforementioned major destinations, for this year’s celebrations, or anywhere else throughout the world this month. Saint Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland, and Nigeria, credited to bringing Christianity to both countries, described as a “most humbleminded man. Having been part of Birmingham’s Digbeth region for 20 years, St Patrick’s Parade goes
back a very long way, originally started by the community to reinforce their identity and ensure their strong links with the home country. This year Birmingham’s Parade promises to be the best yet, being Birmingham’s biggest community event! Whilst being unmistakably Irish at the core, the Parade increasingly mirrors the fantastic diversity of our ethnicities as we welcome guest appearances from other communities. What could be more Irish than extending hospitality? Birmingham St Patricks Day Parade 2016 takes place on Sunday March 13.

Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here appearance, to the progress of his son’s career, and even his long term rival Nigel Benn, Eubank kept the crowd wanting more. Responding to a question from interviewer on the night Richie Woodhall, asking if his son could ever match him, Chris respon-
ded. “He can not be as good as me, come on.” “When you look at my career in a snap shot, it is not just about how good I was, not just what I did with Benn and Watson, it’s the lisp, it’s the monocle, it’s the pretend monocle, it’s the jumpers I wear, it’s the maverick that I have been. All this combined. He can never get to that.” “Therefore he’s going to have to do better. And the way any son can be better is if he listens to his old man.” British born Eubank was a boxing legend in the early 90’s. With a stunning physique and strange style made him known as a fierce fighter with an ‘iron chin’ Probably his most well known moment, at least publicitiy wise was jumping the top rope during a ring entrance to ‘Simply The Best’ by Tina Turner.

A
Birmingham councillor has called for police and council bosses to consider the idea of a designated red light district in the city. Councillor Majid Mahmood, representative for Hodge Hill, has called for the move to drive
prostitutes and other sex-workers from residential street and family homes. Addressed the issue at his surgery, he said: “After several dialogs with the superintendent and other officers, our aim is to remove prostitution away from the Washwood Heath, Coventry
and Alum Rock Roads in the area – totally. Mindful that in doing so it will only end up somewhere else in the city, it will end up somewhere else in the city and remain a constant problem, we may want to look at what’s happening in Leeds.” In 2014, Holbeck, in the West Yorkshire city, became Britain’s first established red light district, allowed sex-workers and prostitutes to work freely within a designated area within the hours of 7am and 7pm, without police interruption or action “I think it’s high time, especially in the current financial climate we are in, that the police and city council officers have a conversation to see if this is a way forward in order to tackle the issues that we are facing on a continuous basis in this district and across the city,” Cllr. Mahmood said. In 2012, Mayoral-hopeful Ray Egan, was said to have set-out plans for a red light zone in the world-renowned and respected Jewellery Quarter as part of his manifesto.

een an interesting year so far, this edition of Streetcred we give an insight into two major award ceremonies this year and that was the Oscars and Brits. Both events are high calibre and big up to all who have won who rightly deserve their titles but for each event I must say they must show more diversity as every culture is working hard in Music and film and its pretty blatant that ethnic talent is not being recognised very much. You must a have heard that
Oscars was boycotted by black celebs and host Chris Rock made the point that Blacks should get their props too and it is only fair. Apart from the upset in lackof diversity both award ceremonies were epic and a massive congrats to all winners but come on; show the input that everyone is putting into the industry and the influence made on the world. It marks Katy’s first single since her chart topping #1 ‘Turn The Music Louder (Rumble)’ with KDA and Tinie Tempah. The stars align perfectly on ‘Who Am I’, a soaring, hands-

Big winners at the brits and Oscars
M
usic’s ‘meat’ in the middle of visual art’s two major nights of glitz and glamour (the BAFTA and the OSCARS), this year’s star-studded BRITS Awards again acknowledged some of the great and good in the British pop music industry as well as – as with the OSCARS, a lack of cultural diversity seemed to be a prominent factor. It didn’t seem to be a case of a lack of Black music - that was there in abundance. The 36th edition of the British Phonographic Industry’s annual awards, whilst heaping deserved praise on the likes of the wonderful award-laden Adele, who again got the ‘British Female Solo Artist’ gong at this year’s bash and James Bay grabbing the trophy in the male category, for Black artists to, at the very least, get nominated was seen by many as reward itself. One of the more raunchy moments of the night came as Rihanna and Drake put on a very steamy display as they reunited to perform their new single ‘Work’ leading to rumours in the weeks that have followed that the couple are back together. Brit Awards bosses have promised to make the annual music ceremony more diverse after controversy erupted over the lack of Black artists up for gongs this year. “Given the rapidly changing landscape of music consumption,” one
of the bosses said, “it may now be time to take a fresh look at the metrics around the BRIT Awards to ensure they reflect the full range of engagement with recorded music.” It’s often said that every time America ‘sneezes,’ Britain ‘catches a cold.’ Often the truth, but isn’t Britain said to be seen as the leading country for unity and diversity? On the other side of the pond, it was another Brit ‘star’ Ali G who stole the show when he made a surprise appearance at this year’s Oscars when he waded into the race debate in his own unique way as the Sacha Baron Cohen character resurrected his infamous character after walking the red carpet with wife Isla Fisher. He brought the famous ‘Staines Massive’ out of retirement for the Academy Awards where he co-presented alongside actress Olivia Wilde to stoke up some controversy. After arriving on stage the comedian referred to himself as "just another token Black presenter," before wading into the ongoing race row: "How come there is no Oscar for them really hard working tiny yellow people with no dongs? You know, minions." "But I is here representing all those who've been overlooked," the comedian continued. "Will Smith, Idris Elbow and the amazing Black bloke from Star Wars, Darth Vader." Ali G's comments were a bit tame in comparison to what host Chris Rock had to say. The comedian left Hollywood A-listers squirming in their seats as he highlighted the
clear racism in the movie industry. “I thought about quitting. I thought about it real hard. They’re going to have the Oscars anyway,” he said. But he was left scratching his head about why people felt so strongly about this year. “You’ve got to figure that it happened in the 50s and 60s… I’m sure there were no Black nominees and Black people did not protest. Why?” he questioned. “Because we had real things to protest at the time. We had real things to protest. Too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won Best Cinematography.” He then insisted it was hard to worry about who was winning what at the Oscars, “when your grandmother is swinging from a tree.” British winners on the night included Sam Smith, who received the Oscar for Best Original Song, Jenny Beavan for Best Costume Design on Mad Max: Fury Road, Serena Armitage & Shan Christopher Ogilve for Best Live Action Short Film with Stutterer, Asif Kapadia won the Best Documentary Feature with Amy, and Mark Rylance got the Best Supporting Actor award for Bridge of Spies.

ased upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who volunteers for a rogue experiment after being diagnosed with a terminal illness that threatens to tear his whole world apart. This experiment leaves him with extraordinary abilities but also grotesque deformities, forcing him to adopt the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humour, Deadpool embarks on a quest to hunt down the man who destroyed his life. For years, comic book fans have demanded it and for years, we were ignored. But on one fateful day in 2014, test footage for a proposed Deadpool movie was "leaked" (wink, wink) online and it changed everything. Due to the astonishing and overwhelmingly positive response to the test footage, 20th Century Fox officially gave the movie a green light, ONE DAY after the test footage was
made public. One day. That's all it took for 20th Century Fox to take a $60-million gamble on a cult comic book character with a foul mouth and a tendency for grotesque violence. Just let that sink in for a moment. Anyway, in honour of Mr. Deadpool himself, I'm going to take a leaf out of his book and break the fourth wall throughout this review
and talk to you directly. Yes, you... the person reading this review. Maybe you wanted some light entertainment on the bus or you're slacking off at work and wanted to escape the mundanity of life for a while, but instead of reading about the important and hard hitting issues of your local community, you decided to read a review of a film about a violent, egomaniac douche

bag, written by a short, overweight, bearded dimwit named Antony Brown. What makes this whole thing even worse is that I wrote this entire review in nothing but my boxers and one sock (I couldn't find the matching sock) - are you proud of yourself for reading this review? You should be. I know I'm proud of you. Anyway, when I tell you that this movie is unfathomably awesome, you have to believe me... because I am the God of cinema and nobody knows more about movies than I do. So, just accept it and move on. Director Tim Miller, some guy nobody has ever heard of because this is his first feature film, does a damn fine job here. And when I say "fine" I'm talking 1994-Jennifer-Aniston-inthe-first-season-of-Friends-fine.

irmingham will play host to a ground-breaking event dedicated to British Asian dance this May, as delegates from around the world join Navadisha 2016. The event, taking place during International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB 2016), will celebrate breakthrough British Asian dance achievements and exciting new developments in the sector during the past 15 years, uncovering models of excellence and new ways of working while stimulating debate about its current place within the UK’s cultural landscape and the nature of its audiences. Keynote speeches will be delivered by award-winning dancer/choreographer Akram Khan, one of the dance world’s most respected figures whose current production Until the Lions premiered in London recently to widespread acclaim and internationally-celebrated dancer/choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh, whose dynamic and highly-individual work spans more than 25 years. The inspiration for Navadisha 2016 comes from Sampad Arts’ seminal conference Navadisha 2000, which helped to blaze a trail for a new generation of dancers and practitioners, spark-
This dude kills it. He, along with his trusty writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (who the hell names their child Rhett?) stuck so closely to the source material that they may as well have just filmed somebody flicking through a Deadpool comic. That's a compliment by the way. So many movies these days, especially comic book movies, are so preoccupied with trying to appeal to a wider audience that they lose everything that made people love the characters in the first place, leaving true fans with tears in their eyes and a sour taste in their mouths. All you have to do is look back at the last ill-advised attempt at bringing Deadpool to the big screen in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. They made the confusing and borderline psychotic decision to strip the character of everything that made him popular, leaving fans wanting to gouge their eyes out with the nearest utensil just so they didn't have to look at it anymore. But now, finally, Ryan Reynolds gets to play the character he signed on to play all those years ago and he absolutely nails it (giggity). Ryan Reynolds' passion for the character oozes from him and floods the screen. With his fast mouth, witty one-liners and undeniable charm, I truly believe he was born to play Deadpool and I think this is the role that will define his entire career - but that could be because most of his other movies are average at best...except for The Proposal. That's a straight-up masterpiece.
The supporting cast are fantastic too, with special recognition going to British actor Ed Skrein (kind of a low budget Jason Statham) as the movie's villain, Ajax. He absolutely revels in his role as the world's biggest jack-ass and it's a genuine pleasure to watch. Everything about this movie is fantastic. From the unconventional way the story is told to the over the top, ridiculously violent yet somehow hilarious action sequences, everything comes together to make one of the most entertaining comic book movies of all time. If you were hoping this review would be an in-depth analysis, then I’m sorry to disappoint you, because that is not what’s happening here. This movie is overflowing with quotable dialogue, memorable scenes and hysterical pop culture references, but to mention any of them would be robbing you of the opportunity to witness them for the first time on the big screen. So just take my word for it and see the damn movie. Deadpool is living proof that a modest budget, a passionate cast and a game crew is all it takes to make not only a fun comic book movie, but a goddamn brilliant one. We are currently experiencing the golden age of superhero cinema and Deadpool is a 24-carat knock-out. (Golden age? 24-carat? I'm sorry but if that sentence didn't impress you then you don't deserve to read any of my reviews ever again. But please don't stop reading them because I'll lose my job.)
British Asian dance looks to the future ing pivotal insights and actions across a variety of fronts, from artistic to organisational and political to structural. Navadisha producer and Director of New Dimensions Arts Management, Anita Srivastava says: “It’s heartening that British Asian dance has evolved and progressed during the past 15 years as reflected by the rise and
prominence of a thrilling current generation of dancers including Sonia Sabri, Aakash Odedra and Seeta Patel. However, it’s time to stock take and look at issues that will impact the future direction of the sector, including reaching out to wider audiences, funding, access routes and artistic excellence.”

Coldplay-Beyoncé collab criticized for trivializing Hinduism
H
indus have criticized a music-video hit single saying it trivializes the religion. ‘Hymn For The Weekend,’ featuring Coldplay with Beyoncé Knowles is said to unnecessarily dragged sacred Hindu concepts and symbols with no linkage to the lyrics/storyline. There are concerns raised about the connection of—depicting one person dressed as Lord Shiva holding a trishul and sitting on the pavement; three persons dressed as Hanumans and standing with gadas leaning against their shoulders; two saffron-clad sadhus (with one on the ground and another high on a bamboo stick holding a mala) sitting on the roadside, as if meditating, with incense burning in front of them—with the lyrics in the video like ‘drink from me.’ Rajan Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism, said, in a statement in Nevada (USA), that Hindus understood that the

purpose of Coldplay-Beyoncé in this case apparently was not to denigrate Hinduism, but casual flirting sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols and hurting the devotees. He noted that inappropriate usage of Hindu symbols/concepts for mercantile greed or commercial/other agendas was not okay as it hurt the devotees. Zed however did say that Hindus were for free artistic expression and speech as much as anybody else if not more, but faith was something sacred.

Welcoming them on Board, ABCC president Saqib Bhatti said: “The partnership has brought together three of Birmingham’s leading brands – the ABCC, Malmaison and Hotel du Vin – and we look forward to progressing our future co-operation.”
He added: “We first established links with Malmaison and Hotel du Vin a couple of years ago and are delighted that our relationship has now developed into a more permanent arrangement.” Damian Goom, general manager of Malmaison, said that the hotel had previously hosted functions for ABCC, including after-party celebrations following its annual dinner, while Tony Elvin, general manager at Hotel du Vin, said that he also looked forward to strengthening its ties with ABCC. “Since being recommended to get involved with ABCC by two business associates we have been able to appreciate, at first-hand, the importance of its role within the community,” added Tony.

olverhampton Residents week is from Monday the 14th to Friday the 18th of March, providing the help and support for people wanting to boost their chances of finding the right job, or improving their health. With free activities and a series of drop-in events the week aims to support local people to compete for jobs, bcome self-employed, develop their skills and improve their health and fitness. Councillor John Reynolds, City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Economy said: “Dozens of organisations and businesses have come together for Residents Week to set up events across five days. It’s a great effort. “Supporting residents into jobs and improving the health and wellbeing of local people are top priorities for the city. Residents Week gives us a focus on this.” One event takes place on Thursday March 17th, where there will be a free to attend day-long job support event at Molineux Stadium that is open to everyone.
From 10am to 2pm, residents can get advice and support on becoming self-employed from organisations and individials such as Access to Business. Ian Darch, Chief Executive of Wolverhampton Voluntary Sector Council and Chair of the City’s Inclusion Board, added: “Together we have arranged a wide-ranging programme of events to help people compete for jobs, become self-employed, develop their skills, improve their health and fitness and know more about the help and support available to them across the city. “We want as many people as possible to take advantage of the support on offer – it could really make a difference by kick-starting someone’s career or by giving them support in making lifestyle changes.” Residents Week is part of Wolverhampton’s drive to improve opportunities, prosperity and health for residents, and is also part of the City’s Conference Season which aims to raise the profile of Wolverhampton, its people and opportunities.
early £2.2 billion worth of unpaid overtime was worked by people in the West Midlands last year. The TUC has analysed official figures showing that more than 370,000 workers in the region on average worked overtime worth £5,940 each. The analysis was published to mark the TUC’s annual “Work Your Proper Hours Day”. On average, those working past their contracted hours did approximately 8.3 hours of unpaid overtime per week. Work Your Proper Hours Day is the day when the average person who does unpaid overtime would start to get paid if they did all their unpaid overtime at the start of the year. To mark it, the TUC is calling on staff to take a proper lunch break and leave work on time. Managers are also being encouraged to lead by example and encourage their staff to work their proper hours.

A
new British organisation talking about British issues faced by Muslim business people has been launched. Muslims for Britain’s first issue will be working for a ‘leave’ vote in the EU referendum and will be joining the Vote Leave coalition. The board includes: Saqib Bhatti (Joint Secretary-General); Aftab Chughtai (Joint Secretary-General and Business Champion); Naheed Majeed (Former Lady Mayoress of Windsor and National Campaign Lead); Iftikhar Awan (Consultant and Lead for Manchester and Yorkshire); Obaidullah Khan (West Midlands Lead); and Abdus Hamid (Lead for South of England). Joint Secretary-General of Muslims for Britain, Saqib Bhatti, said “We are a British organisation engaging in British issues, and we think there is a need for the voice of Muslim businesspeople to be heard in the EU referendum debate. Muslims for Britain will campaign with Vote Leave. We are a community of wealth creators, job providers and great economic
l Saqib Bhatti contributors to the UK and we believe Britain would thrive outside the EU.” Fellow Joint Secretary-General, Aftab Chughtai, said:“Britain needs to fully embrace the global market, as we have a strong future outside the EU. We could have a fairer immigration system that recognises the incredible contribution from the Commonwealth in the past, and we could secure trade deals with exciting and expanding countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Australia.” At a recent event, over 70 leading Muslim businesspeople from across the country – and from industries including manufacturing and media – attended the launch in Birmingham, which was addressed by Dan Hannan MEP. Hannan said “The EU referendum is an opportunity to rediscover Britain’s global vocation. A leave vote would allow Britain to become a global trading nation again and allow an improved system for immigration that does not necessarily prioritise immigration from the European Union.”

When asked about his move to the role, he commented: “What can I say – I am honoured and truly de-
taking some difficult decisions, around issues like the Combined Authority, and the bold plans for Garden City.” Other speakers included Martin Clarke, the NEC’s marketing director, and Andy Cole, general manager of Touchwood. A presentation was made to Jane Jackson, who is stepping down as director of Solihull Chamber, to take up a new role at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce headquarters in Edgbaston. She will be succeeded by Joan Smith.
lighted to be taking on this role at BCLFC.” “Over the past five years I have got to know both the management team and players well, and have seen the club really embrace the increasing popularity of women’s football in the UK and across the world.” “Steve Shipway is an incredible act to follow; his ongoing passion and dedication is something that I will aim to echo, and with him by my side in his role as deputy I know that his football knowledge teamed with my business experience will really take BCLFC to the next level.” “We want to be competing with those top teams and dominating the Women’s Super League.” Following 25 years serving the club, Shipway will remain within the management team as Deputy CEO, providing Tim Andrews with unrivalled knowledge of the game, the players, and strategies to help grow the club. He said: “The club has come a long way in the last five years since FAWSL 1 was set up, but the game is progressing at a fast pace and we have to step our performance to keep up.” “The introduction of Tim as CEO means that we are doubling the Senior Management team whilst adding skill sets that have been missing over the years. Tim is a successful business man who has a deep knowledge of Birmingham City Ladies through his very pro active sponsorship over the last four years. “I am really looking forward to working with Tim and to taking the club on to new levels.”

AFTERNOON TEA WITH JACYNTH A IVEY
Afternoon Tea Wi t
There’s Something Inside So Strong T he song lyrics of Labi Siffre “You can deny me, you can decide to turn your face away…….. you thought that my pride was gone”. This song makes a strong statement about standing up for not only basic human rights, but also for respect, tolerance and dignity. Whether your pregnancy was meticulously planned, medically coaxed, or happened by surprise, one thing is certain – your life will never be the same. – Catherine Jones For most women, pregnancy is a time for joy and family celebration. But for so many vulnerable women, and for those seeking asylum, this time is often fraught with anxiety and worry. Bethel Health and Healing Network is an amazing charity that has developed an approach to support vulnerable women during their pregnancy, labour and for a short period after the birth of their baby. Women, who have a history of being trafficked, used as drug mules, physically abused and persecuted because of their religious beliefs. The team spoke of pregnant women seeking asylum in the UK often arriving in ill health, having fled war and violence in their country, and having made traumatic journeys here in search of safety. The service is equally available to indigenous women who have simply fallen through the net of the welfare state. The team are all upbeat about the work that they do. Georgina Watts CEO praises the staff team and especially the team of volunteer doulas who come from all walks of life, they are the backbone of the service. Many women at varying stages of their pregnancy often report that their emotions are ‘up and
down’ or ‘all over the place.’ Georgina recounts a very tearful woman was ‘low in mood’ and questioned whether she was going to be able to look after her baby as she did not have anything. She kept wringing her hands and asking for help. She explained that she did not have anything to be happy about; she did not have anybody, little money, and no friends. There are many women who access the service who share similar feelings and stories. The majority of women that Bethel Health and Healing Network support experience on-going mental health issues, including depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. “I had my sisters supporting me throughout my pregnancy” The Bethel Doula Service trains and co-ordinates a team of thirtyfive volunteer doulas. A doula
is a woman who gives emotional and practical support to women during pregnancy, birth and immediately after. This may involve visiting a mother at home, helping her register with a GP or attending midwife appointments with her. Doula, (pronounced Doo-la) comes from a Greek word that means “a woman who serves” or “handmaiden.” During our discussion we reflected on the idea of women helping other women during their childbirth and recognise its not new and is a concept still present in many cultures across the globe. So far this year the team have supported women from 25 countries such as Syria, Eritrea, Malawi, Nigeria, Iraq, China and
Eastern Europe. A number of the women experiencing underlying health issues arising from previously undiagnosed conditions and the effects of torture, sexual violence or female genital mutilation. Georgina states that many of the women may not understand the English language or systems here in the UK and are likely to be living in poverty faced with the harrowing fear of detention and not knowing if they will be allowed to remain in this country. This is an unimaginable situation for so many women living here in the UK. “I didn’t have anything or any one. I don’t know what I would have done” Some women have no access to any money at all, ineligible to work or claim benefits due to pending immigration status. They don’t know where they will live or sleep, most having been moved around the country more than once. The women do not know if they will be able to afford essential provisions such as nappies or baby clothes, they are concerned about the hygiene of their current accommodation and the impact this will have on their pregnancy and newborn baby. The Bethel Doula Project recognises the urgency of these concerns and has been providing much needed support for these extremely vulnerable women in the Birmingham area. Margaret King, a midwife and lecturer, enthusiastically manages the service. “When we reflect on the women that we have supported through their births this year, the vast majority do not have enough knowledge, experience or confidence to make an informed choice regarding the place of their baby’s birth.” “This is something we are committed to trying to improve. The women who use our service are faced with a huge number of

challenging life issues e.g. immigration, housing, separation from family, poverty, domestic abuse etc. the majority of the time women will accept the first option they are presented with, as they believe is it the only option available to them.” “Often the women present to us late in their pregnancy as they have moved around several times during their gestation period.” “This makes making an informed choice about place and type of birth even more difficult.” “Where possible we have enabled women to attend their place of birth in order to be familiar with the unit, staff, transportation and other details.” "Don't walk in front of me and be my leader, don't walk behind me and be my follower, but walk beside me and be my sister." -Unknown A sense of sisterhood unites the volunteers with the women. Georgina points out that the volunteers

Some of the volunteers are prospective midwives, who are gaining valuable experience in maternity services whilst offering their care, compassion and practical help. There are also have several refugees and asylum seekers who are able to empathise with the mothers as well as offer practical help in a system they are now familiar with. One of the doula volunteers commented, “I’m so proud to be a part of this service. The midwife in charge praised me repetitively for supporting the mother every step of the way

arch – the end of the financial year where employees are using up annual leave and some budget holders may be having sleepless nights. Whilst it is important to have our finances in order, it is also important to be aware of fund raisers who are relying on our generous altruism to achieve their goals. I’d like to highlight a few to give you an idea of the amount of work going on for the young people around us not flagged up by the regular press.
Just Giving
One of my friends contacted me recently and asked me to share her Just Giving page. It’s easy to do via social media and one would hope enough people take action once reading the link if the content strikes a chord with them.
l Marnie Williams Marnie Williams writes: “In May 2016 I’m am doing the 3 peaks challenge in 24 hours, in memory of my son's best friend who died 18 months ago. His family were supported by the local Chestnut Tree House who aim to bring a quality of life to 0-19 year olds with life limiting situations. http://www.justgiving.com/ Marnie-Williams1/
“As most of you know my son's best friend Elliott died 18 months ago. Elliott is always in our hearts and a part of our lives, every day. “Losing a friend at the tender age of 17, is harrowing but, to watch his awesome loving family, be in such pain and being helpless to remove that pain for them is heartbreaking. Now I have the opportunity to support them in keeping the memory of Elliott in everyone’s hearts and minds. “I have watched the family distraught; by the cards they were dealt and am fully aware that the strength they have to find every day, to live their lives. The support offered from Chestnut Tree House staff, alongside family members and friends has been paramount to their finding a way through the ongoing, distress this event has caused. “While I haven't undertaken a challenge like this before I am giving it 100%, as I walk with Elliott's Dad Peter, in memory of his gorgeous, loving, caring son. “I can't stop families experiencing the anguish that my dear friends have had to endure. But, I can help support them to keep Elliott's memory alive. And I can help ensure that Chestnut Tree House can continue to offer their professional support to other families, in need. I hope you can help raise the

Excellence
Staying on topic regarding supporting young people, Tony Harrison is a director of the youth focused community interest company Youth in Excellence CIC www.youthinexcellence.com Tony writes: “Last year we ran a poetry competition to coincide with Universal Children’s Day (UCD). The subject covered was ‘Identity’; this topic allowed the entrants to ‘in prose’ explore and share their interpretation of how they see themselves. Because of the quality of the work received, we felt the need to share the high levels of excellence that was presented in the form of an anthology. “The contributors were aged between 11 and 19 years and the book is now a testament to their creativity, passion, thoughts and experiences as a young person growing up in the UK. “We are now seeking contributors for our 2016 project. The subject title for this year’s poetry competition is ‘War and Peace in Today’s World’. This will reflect various forms of conflict and resolution within our society, whether it be global, national, social, family or peer driven. “Our aim at Youth in Excellence is to make this competition available to as many young people as possible. You will probably know how difficult it is to get information into schools if you do not have the appropriate contact names and contact details and I am wary of just sending information which ends up as spam in the generic school / organisation email account. “What I am seeking are effective contacts or links into education provisions, youth groups, faith groups etc who see the value of empowering their young people to participate in this inspiring pro-
ject. “The winning poems and poets are acknowledged and rewarded but all poems that meet the criteria will also be featured in this year’s book which will be available as both an e-book and hard copy publication.

BEDSAs
n Saturday 6th February I was privileged to attend a very glamorous awards event where nominees were from a mix of cultures and backgrounds. It was refreshing to be in the presence of legends and greats and to admire how wonderful everyone looked in their finery. I was even able to partake in a complimentary neck massage by one of a group of a therapists enjoying the evening with us before my work began. I returned the favour by demonstrating how good my hands are! In my conversations during the night I kept hearing myself say that my sporting knowledge was negligible. After the third time around I stopped my thoughts in their tracks. Did I really know so little about sports? I’ve been to football matches – at least 2 featuring Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz - and thoroughly enjoyed them (despite the swearing from surrounding supporters!) I wondered what had happened to the young school girl who did gym club 3 times week, loved long jump, the 100m sprint and played netball in middle school. I probably have my gym and
swimming badges previously sewn on to my swimming costume secreted somewhere in the loft! I wondered what happened to the O level student who played badminton and the A level student who used to run several laps around the school gym during free periods as part of circuit training. As I allowed those thoughts to wonder I realised my exercise regime had declined somewhat over the years after leaving school and a few hit-and-miss gym membership attempts! Do you remember what your last sporting involvement was at school? Did it stop there? Has your lifestyle become sedentary? I have marvelled at people running along the highway during early morning and late night travel in Barbados and even close to home – older couples under doctor’s orders taking brisk walks in sports suits at various times of the day. I have often advised any dexa scanner patients (following guidelines set out by the National Osteoporosis Society) that taking brisk walks for 30 minutes every day will help to strengthen bone density and reduce the risk of them succumbing to osteoporosis or prevent their current osteopoenic condition worsening. I recall the case of a patient with abdominal pain who presented for an ultrasound scan. The radiologist I was assisting concluded that there was nothing wrong with her internally but that she needed to increase or resume the regularity and length of her dog-walking to reduce the amount

One of the award recipients on the night was Rashida Salloo, 35, a Batley mum who trained as a sports coach and is hoping to inspire other women to follow in her footsteps. She is a mentor for Mums’ Team, which aims to encourage local mothers to become community sports leaders and coaches while reaching out to those who struggle to get involved in physical activity. Industrial chemist Rashida, whose children are two and one, already runs her own enterprise, Ready Steady Active, holding fitness sessions and coached activities for all ages in Batley. She will now advise women who sign up to the West Yorkshire Sport-funded Mums’ Team programme, which provides training

to equip them with the skills they need to hold sports sessions. What was evident on the night is that Rashida is expecting a little blessing of her own in a few weeks!
Potternewton
Watching Rashida receiving her award reminded me of my childhood friend in Leeds Bev Benjamin who has recently organised a monthly club called “Potternewton run/jog/walk”. Bev is seen below on the left in red. The Potternewton run/jog/walk group is a self managed group which she established in December 2015. Bev loves running and has completed 8 marathons but she knows that’s not for everyone! Each week she does a few laps around the local park (which is beautiful) and she occasionally sees dog walkers but very rarely see anyone from the local community. In her own words: “ I wanted to start a group that would be free and accessible to everyone - runners, joggers and walkers and, that would at the same time encourage locals to use our beautiful park and get fitter.” “There are no rules - people just turn up at 9:30am on the first Sunday of each month (at Roxholme Terrace park entrance) and do as many laps of the park as they want to!” “I usually head off with the runners/joggers and my husband sets of with the walkers. On average around 14 people attend.” “Some people come with friends and some come on their own and meet new friends. Everyone is welcome - it’s everyone’s park
after all!! It’s a fantastic way to kick start a Sunday morning, use our green space, meet new friends and get a little fitter as well.” “We meet once a month and most group members do their own runs/jogs/ walks in-between or send a message to our WhatsApp group asking if anyone would like to join them for a run/jog/walk.” “I love running so being able to support others to come to the park and run/ jog/walk with us is just fantastic”. The Potternewton Park runners/joggers/walkers will meet on the first Sunday of each month at 9:30am at the entrance opposite Roxholme Terr. 2016 diary dates: 6th March; 3rd April. Bev looks forward to seeing you there...sun, rain, wind or snow.

Donna’s Story
Three years ago, Donna Fraser, a four-times Olympian and double World Championship medallist, retired. And at the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace, 18,000 saluted one of Britain’s finest 400m runners. She cried then, as she does now in retelling the tale sitting with her partner, David. Because behind those tears was the knowledge she was suffering from breast cancer, which led to her having a mastectomy. It was in May 2009 that she found a lump in her right breast. She was told it was a cyst but needed an operation. “I went in for surgery that June and felt something was not quite right,” she said. “All the results came back and it was quite bizarre. I kept seeing shows on television about breast cancer and reading stories in newspapers. I knew it would not be good news. “I went to see the surgeon. She sat me down, her lips were moving but I was not hearing anything. I just heard, ‘You have early stages of breast cancer’.” “Everything else went blank. I was there on my own because until then I had not told my family anything. I had told my coach, Ayo Falola, and he was what I
l Baileigh Cordice says: “She played football for her primary school St Joachim’s and was unbeaten for a long time. West Ham showed interest in her and wanted her to play a game with them when she was 9. She declined as she was an Arsenal fan! After that she began playing with boys at a club called Broadwater Farm in Tottenham. When she was 13 she applied for trials at Charlton and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club - she got into both and she decided to join Charlton and played in an older age group for the season. Her secondary school St Angela’s asked her to attend Essex county trials for the u16 team at the age of 14. The following season I convinced her to join Tottenham because I’m a fan. Recently she has been asked to attend an international trial for Wales. She is a striker, wears no. 11 and loves scoring goals. Also worth noting that she’s doing really well in school and is predicted As/A*s for her GCSEs”.
needed at that time.” “He said, ‘You have to sort it out and just get on with training’. I wanted to finish my season on a high and I could not take it in.” “They sent me to the Royal Marsden for the discussion about radiation. I sat down and this professor started talking about mastectomy.” She was then left with the decision of whether to undergo treatment or have her breast removed. “Donna the athlete kicked in,” she said. “With all the injuries I had had, I would always have the operations in the end. “I cut to the chase. I said I would rather just have it over and done with.” Only close family and a few friends knew what she went through. Recently she told Denise Lewis and, working now with Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Fraser is determined to send her message by going public and wearing an athletics kit again on the big stage. “As an athlete and a 4x Olympian I have been through some trials and tribulations in my life but nothing was like the
l Donna Fraser numbing feeling of finding a lump in my breast…” “In 2009 I thought about retiring after a 20 year career as a professional athlete; I had a great indoor season and was gearing up for my final outdoor season when I found a lump in my breast.” “Based on the advice TV programmes and magazines offer I checked for any changes on a daily basis; however I was at the peak of my fitness so this couldn’t be what immediately sprung to mind.” “After 2 weeks the lump was still there and the concern was apparent, so I made an appointment with my GP.” “To cut a long story short, I was referred to a consultant, where a biopsy was done and told the lump needed to be removed, which occurred June and sooner or later I was back competing on the track, along with the agonising wait for the biopsy results.” “I had mixed emotions when I went for my results, yet despite my resilient athletic mentality, nothing prepared me for what I was about to hear. The consultant spoke, but there was no sound – her lips moved, but all I heard was breast cancer.” “I was experiencing a silent movie and it wasn’t until I was taken into a separate room with the care nurse, when reality kicked in and I broke down with complete devastation. I had a major fight on my hands, continuing my athletics career with breast cancer.” “Radiotherapy was next on the cards and my visit to the Royal Marsden came with unexpected statistics. The professor mentioned the option of having a mastectomy!” “I was 36, how on earth could I have a mastectomy? I had two
choices: either go ahead with radiotherapy and risk the chances of the cancer returning or opt for a mastectomy?” “A life changing decision and not an easy one, but I decided to have a mastectomy. On 01st December 2009 I had the surgery and was forced to retire from athletics.” “The London 2012 Olympics Games were here and the passion I had for athletics came rushing through my veins. I had to try and make TeamGB to show myself and others that with belief and determination, there is life after breast cancer.” “The Olympic trials came around and despite all the odds, I made the qualifying time but sadly wasn’t selected for the team, nevertheless I had achieved all I wanted and I was happy.” So, in rounding up, may I reiterate the message to myself as well as others right across the generations to get moving and keep moving – especially as the weather is likely to improve soon! Take care of yourself and one another...

orship is an act of profound religious devotion or reverence offered a divine being, a deity, a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred. An act of worship may be performed individually, in an informal or formal group, or by a designated leader. Worship is the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for something. The attitude of worship towards God or gods or ancestors is a universal of human culture. But why do we worship? Do objects of worship need to fulfill certain criteria? Does worship play a positive or negative role in human culture? Is it clear that a perfect, omnipotent and omniscient God truly wants to be worshiped? Some pagan religions worship the earth, or the aspects of nature that make human life possible and rewarding.
CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE OF WORSHIP
The nature of Christian worship is from the inside out and has two equally important parts. Christians are enjoined to worship “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24). Worshiping in the spirit has
nothing to do with ones physical posture. It has to do with ones innermost being and requires several things. First, One must be born again. Without the direction of Holy Spirit, Christians cannot respond to God in worship. The Holy Spirit is the one who energizes worship because He is in essence glorifying Himself, and all true worship glorifies God. Second, worshipping in spirit requires a mind centred on God and renewed by Truth. Paul exhorts Christian believers to “present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:1b, 2b). Only when our minds are changed from being centered on worldly things to being centered on God can we worship in spirit. Distractions of many kinds can flood our minds as we try to praise and glorify God, hindering our true worship. Third, a christian can only worship in spirit by having a pure heart, open and repentant. When King David’s heart was filled with
WORSHIP
guilt over his sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11), he found it impossible to worship. He felt that God was far from him, and he “groaned all day long” feeling God’s hand heavy upon him (Psalm 32:3,4). But when he confessed, fellowship with God was restored and worship and praise poured forth from him. He understood that “the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart” (Psalm 51:17). Praise and worship toward God cannot come from hearts filled with unconfessed sin.
ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE
The concept and purpose of worship combines the mundane with the spiritual, the individual with the society, and the internal soul with the external body. Worship has a unique role in Islam, and through worship, a person is regarded as a true Muslim who accords his entire life to the Will of God. The importance of worship may be seen in the fact that it has been prescribed by God in all religions prior to Islam. God said in the Quran: “And assuredly We have sent among every people a messenger (with the command): worship God…” (Quran 16:36) Worship in Islam has so many facets that it is difficult to describe them all in words. The most general meaning of worship in Islam is inclusive of everything which is pleasing to God, whether they deal with issues of belief, or deeds of the body. It may include everything a per-
son perceives, thinks, intends, feels, says and does. It also refers to everything that God requires, external, internal or interactive. This includes rituals as well as beliefs, work, social activities, and personal behavior, as human being is a whole, such that every part affects every other. Worship may be classified into two types: 1) Specific Beliefs, feelings and visible acts of devotion paid in homage to God which He has commanded. 2) All other acts of goodness generally encouraged in the life of a Muslim.
Devotion to God
This facet of worship entails that one fulfils certain deeds which God has commanded in His religion, whether they deal with the inner self or the outer body, and whether they be obligatory or voluntary. This facet of worship is not only limited to following His commandments, however, but it is also inclusive of leaving those things which He has forbidden. Worship in this sense, maybe defined as anything believed, felt, or done as an act of obedience to God.
HINDU PERSPECTIVE
Work—when performed in the right spirit—is worship. What is it that transforms work from a secular pursuit into a religious one? It is the Hindu’s believe that through the process of living life we unfold spiritually. It is the knowing that through fulfilling our natural duties in life, honestly and to the best of our abil-
ity, we make spiritual progress. Why? Because work puts us in situations where we interact with other people, especially when we hold our dharmic responsibility over an extended period. Through interacting with others, we learn important lessons and, as a result, gradually deepen our understanding, improve our behavior and become a more spiritual person. In doing so, we work through the karma we created in the past and create new karma to be faced in the future. With this in mind, we can see that our daily work contributes to our spiritual progress just as much as attending pujas in the temple, worshiping in our home shrine, going on pilgrimage, singing bhajans, meditating or studying scripture. Paramaguru Yogaswami captured the essence of this perspective when he said, “All work must be done with the aim of reaching God.” From the Hindu perspective, all of life is sacred, and performing ones duty is dharma. Dharma is a rich term that means “way of righteousness, religion and fulfillment of duty.” From this lofty view, every deed is part of a religious practice. Everything every deed is an act of worship and faith. There are no purely secular activities. Worship in the temple is part of dharma, and work or occupation is part of dharma.
CONCLUSION
Worship begins with discovering and admitting what we have been worshiping in our lives. All of us
The Phoenix – March 2016
worship something, whether we know it or not. We may not physically bow down to it, or offer it songs of praise and adoration, but whatever we devote most of our time and attention to is often what we worship. Seen in that light, it’s easy to see that we can worship God, we can worship money, or power, or a rock star, or we can even worship a lifestyle. Worship is more than an act of reverence. It is an attitude of the heart. Worship is not the slow song that the choir sings. Worship is not the amount you place in the offering basket. Worship is not volunteering in children’s church. Yes, these may be acts or expressions of worship, but they do not define what true worship really is. There are numerous definitions of the word worship. True worship, in other words, is defined by the priority we place on who God is in our lives and where God is on our list of priorities. True worship is a matter of the heart expressed through a lifestyle of holiness. Thus, if your lifestyle does not express the beauty of holiness through an extravagant or exaggerated love for God, and you do not live in extreme or excessive submission to God, then I invite you to make worship a non-negotiable priority in your life. True worship can be summed up as the totality of our earthly activities - fruitive activities. Worship is unlimited and unending devotion to the things we Cherish most. It is the work we engage in, activities that yield a positive or negative results. As students of theistic science, worship is inseparable from our various works and activities. The sum total of our earthly activities constitute worship. True worship.

The work brings progress at the 9.2-acre site, which plans to deliver a million sq ft of office-led, mixed use development. Demolition and site clearance at Arena Central has been under way for several months, with the start of the construction phase of the project marked by a ground-breaking ceremony attended by Antonio Simoes, chief executive of HSBC Bank and Andrew Sutherland, managing director of Miller Developments. Mr. Simoes said: "Creating the
head office of our ring-fenced bank in Birmingham brings us closer to more of our customers and employees across the UK and supports our ambition to be the bank of choice. The start of building work at our future home in Arena Central marks an exciting step in the creation of our ring-fenced bank and our commitment to Birmingham." The bank has been supported by Birmingham City Council and inward investment agency Marketing Birmingham – and its employees will continue to be assisted throughout the relocation process. Sir Albert Bore was leader of Birmingham City Council at the time of the project launch, saying then: “Birmingham is changing for the better. We are investing heavily in the city’s future, with major projects including the redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station
due to complete this year and other transformational schemes now underway. HSBC joins a number of global companies that want to be a part of Birmingham’s accelerating growth and strong economic prospects.” Andy Street, Chair of the Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP, said: “The economic revival of Greater Birmingham is gathering pace, led by highly valuable industries such as financial services. It underlines the city’s position as a UK business hub and a prime location for professionals building their careers. HSBC’s new head office at a site within Birmingham’s Enterprise Zone will provide a tangible reminder of the scale of investment we are now attracting into the region.” The start of construction work is another milestone in the historic move of HSBC.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
Dealing with saturated markets
T
he proliferation of similar commodities can result in either a glut or saturation in the marketplace and this has serious implications for small firms trying to make a tidy return. In an arena where buyers and sellers contest for dominance, saturation is prevalent in low income markets where firms seek to satisfy consumer demand for a variety of products. Sectors such as food and hospitality, the creative industries and social welfare services are amongst the lead areas where market saturation exists. On the one hand, businesses compete viz., the quantum of goods, low prices and/or differentiated products to make a reasonable return on investment. Conversely, social enterprises, against the backdrop of public sector cutbacks and corresponding de-prioritising of essential services locally, tend to offer what they consider to be ‘vital services’ to meet the needs of ‘end-users’. Much of the literature on saturated markets tend to instruct large companies or conglomerates on how to deal with such trend. However, SMEs with limited research budgets do find it challenging to manage this type of
market competition. Yet, owners who understand and appreciate the importance of quality products and services, pricing methods, quality staff and premises, effective regulations and a sound image and reputation, do stand a better chance gaining ‘favourable’ market advantage. Despite the knowledge of operating a particular business or understanding the product and service on offer, the issue of market saturation remains a dilemma for new owners who thrive on mere ‘gut feeling’ and limited market information. They often perceive ‘a real need’ for particular set of products and services without any real consumer intelligence. “If they can open a restaurant, I can also start a food takeaway businesses”. Anecdotally, much of this is evidenced by the duplication of fast-food firms and groceries in predominantly English inner-cities. Since the diminution of traditional corner shops at the beginning of this century, consumer markets have changed (and still are) inexorably, and more so, because of the influx of supermarket giants and franchise operations. Some argue that the planning

system needs overhauling to take into account, concomitant symptomatic levels of both under-trading and overtrading among segments of the small firm sector. Indeed, countering a glut in the market for consumer items; be they groceries, luxury products and or other basic commodities, requires a different level of market orientation than is the case today. Nevertheless, a few suggested pointers will suffice here:• Business owners must constantly research the products and services on offer. • Frequent monitoring of competitive trends in the marketplace. • Analysis of customers changing buying behaviour. • Priority given to quality, customer-friendly staff who’re not merely ‘doing a job’. • Investment in regional and international markets where prospects are good. . • Consideration given to direct brokerage and partnership arrangements. • Robust systems instituted to manage market trends in ideas, goods and services. The vitality of any business or social firm, depends on the type of perspective and real thought owners and directors give to market dynamics in their particular sector. Overall, small companies must do their ‘homework’ in terms of trying to making sense of the impact market saturation can have on their respective businesses –either internal or external.

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience. Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons why a child is placed in care.
There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!
We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.
Adoption & Fostering Our ongoing campaign to help the children in need in our communities
Barnardo’s plea for more foster carers
D
uring Barnardo’s Fostering and Adoption Week, in January, the children’s charity issued a heartfelt plea for would-befoster carers to give children the stable, loving care they deserve. With around 9070 new foster families needed across the UK in 2016 to provide stable, loving care for children, according to the Fostering Network, Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed Khan said: “Across the UK ordinary people are doing something
extraordinary: opening their hearts to help children feel secure and loved. More foster carers are desperately needed to give these children loving, stable care. You
could be one of them. “Everyone deserves a childhood where they remember feeling unconditionally loved and accepted. Tragically, this is not the case for some children
who through no fault of their own, cannot live with their parent/s. When life gets tough, they need a caring adult to look after them.” Barnardo’s celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2016. The charity was one of the first to place children with families and train foster carers to have the right skills to look after children. Head of Fostering and Adoption at Barnardo's, Brenda Farrell, ,said: “Our foster carers are changing children’s lives for the better. You don’t have to be a saint or a superhero; You just need to be able to offer a child the loving care they need to help them be themselves at a difficult time.”

undreds of young people in care in Wolverhampton showcased their talents at an inspirational awards celebration. The annual I Awards, held at the Ramada Park Hall Hotel, celebrated the efforts of Wolverhampton's looked after
children and care leavers and recognised their hard work and success in a range of categories over the last 12 months. More than 200 children and young people were invited to collect awards in recognition of a wide range of achievements, from doing well at school to getting involved in
their local community. The I Awards also celebrated success in creativity and art and recognised the achievements of care leavers who are taking the next steps in their lives. Councillor Val Gibson, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "I am extremely proud of the achievements of looked after children in Wolverhampton, and the I Awards are a great way for us to encourage them to aim high and reward them for their hard work. "It's also a fantastic opportunity for the young people themselves to celebrate their successes with their foster carers and support workers. “Many children in care will have previously gone through
a very difficult period in their young lives, and so it’s all the more important that we celebrate their success. "We heard some moving stories of achievement which, coupled with the invaluable support of their carers, has enabled our young people to achieve in many different ways. I am delighted that we were able to reward so many of our inspirational young people. As well as the presentation ceremony, the I Awards evening also featured music and dance performances by local children and young people.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Managing the supply of NHS clinical staff in England
E
nsuring there are enough clinical staff with the right skills to meet the demand for high-quality, safe healthcare is essential to the operation of the NHS. However, the current arrangements for managing the supply of clinical staff are fragmented and do not represent value for money, according to the National Audit Office. The creation of Health Education England means that, for the first time, there is a national body specifically tasked with making strategic decisions about planning the future workforce, working collaboratively with local healthcare providers. The national workforce plan is developed from plans prepared by local providers, which means it should be based on a detailed understanding of local circumstances. According to the NAO, however, the process for developing the national long-term workforce plan could be made more robust and Health Education England should be more proactive in addressing the variations in workforce pressures in different parts of the country. Healthcare providers are responsible for employing clinical staff to deliver healthcare. Hospital trusts’ use of temporary staff has increased significantly, put- ting pressure on their financial
position, and the NAO concluded that there is room for trusts to reduce spending on temporary staff. Temporary staffing gives trusts the flexibility to address shortterm workforce pressures, but high levels of temporary staff are an inefficient use of resources. Spending on agency staff increased from £2.2 billion in 200910 to £3.3 billion in 2014-15. The Secretary of State for Health announced a cap in October 2015 on how much trusts can pay per shift to help control spending on agency staff; however, the NAO notes that these measures are unlikely to address fully the underlying causes of the increased demand for temporary staff. At the same time as the use of temporary staff has increased, the NHS has made much less use of overseas recruitment and return-to-practice initiatives to address staffing shortfalls. Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office, said: “Given the size of the NHS, workforce planning will never be an exact science, but we think it clearly could be better than it is. Equally, the way in which staff shortfalls are filled can be, and often is, unnecessarily costly and inefficient. Since clinical staff are the NHS’s main resource and cost, these shortcomings are serious and the current arrangements do not achieve value for money.”

taff and supporters from Birmingham St Mary's Hospice took to the catwalk in the name of fundraising as the Hospice hosted its first ever charity fashion show in their Dorridge Boutique store on Thursday 18th February to raise awareness of its high end charity shops and the hospice care it provides. Through sales, and a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, around £500 of vital funds were raised on the night. Birmingham St Mary's Hospice is free of charge to terminally ill patients and their families, and costs around £8 million each year to run. As part of the 'Love your Local Hospice' campaign, the charity fashion show is to help raise awareness of the 16 Hospices from the West Midlands that have joined forces to promote the importance that they play in the local communities. The catwalk consisted of four key themes and saw Hospice nurses, staff and supporters model day wear, work wear, party wear

in the West Midlands alone, but the real number, estimated by a leading surgeon could be twice as high, as around half of all sufferers do not show any symptoms until they suffer a stroke or a heart attack. BHF Associate Medical Director, Dr Mike Knapton, said: “Peripheral arterial disease can lead to horrific consequences and the silent nature of the condition means that opportunities to diagnose and treat it are often missed. “We do know that stopping smoking is the single most effective way of reducing your risk of developing this potentially deadly disease and with No Smoking Day on March 9, now is a great time for smokers in the West Midlands to prepare to start their quitting journey.”

A
national consultation kicked off in Sierra Leone to help the country’s small and medium enterprises reach new export markets, and re-orient an economy still reeling from the Ebola crisis towards sustainable growth. The stakeholder consultation, taking place in the capital Freetown, looked at ways to improve industrial product packaging in key sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing and manufacturing, to increase production and boost competitiveness. A major outcome was the formulation of a strategic action plan for Sierra Leone’s packaging industry, developed by the Sierra Leone Ministry of Trade & Industry and the Sierra Leone Investment & Export Promotion Agency. Paulo Kautoke, Director of Trade at the Commonwealth Secretariat, which supports the Government’s consultation, reiterated the Commonwealth’s commitment to support Sierra Leone’s economy recovery by improving its export packaging. He said: “Good quality packaging and labeling is of critical importance to improving the competitiveness of Sierra Leone’s exports, to enable the country to increase its market access. That’s why it is important that key stakeholders, particularly the private sector, had a forum and mechanism to discuss and plan the packaging needs of industry.” The study found that a lack of national capacity in product packaging has been compounded by the fallout from the Ebola crisis which, according to the World Bank, resulted in a loss to the three affected countries – Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia of at least US$2billion in forgone economic growth in 2014-2015. Raymond Kai Gbekie, Chief Executive of the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA), said: “When SMEs are able to connect to international markets, either directly or by supplier linkage programmes, the prospects for growth of the economy and job creation are particularly high.”

Holness, ready to form a government as the new prime minister, pledged to create jobs and grow the economy while improving education and health care. "We don't take it that we have won a prize," he told the crowd. "The cost of victory is to keep the commitments we have made." Holness' campaign
pledge to make the economy more dynamic with cuts to the income tax and other measures resonated with many in a country with widespread poverty and a youth unemployment rate above 30 percent. In the wake of the recount, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has requested that all Jamaicans, including supportors
of both political parties to remain calm despite the long process of the recount of ballots. “All Jamaicans have a responsibility to ensure that Jamaica’s reputation as a mature democracy is preserved and nothing causes hurt to anyone,” said Simpson Miller.
