rti Halai is a communication specialist and is a prominent face of British Asian Media. She is now one of the most successful women in the industry. She was born and grew up in North London, Hendon, and she has four sisters. Arti’s parents were hard working, strict but fair; and it was important for them that all the children embraced their Indian cultural values as well as western customs. So for example, they celebrated both both Diwali and Christmas at home. Arti went to a local comprehensive school then graduated from the University of Sussex in 1992 with BA Hons. in Social Policy. She then followed her passion to develop a career in the media, she was conscious of the lack of Asian women being represented in the media and she was not aware of Asian girls who had an aspiration for the media. Arti Halai began her career working for BBC Radio West Midlands as a reporter and presenter. Not only is Arti a beautiful, innovative and creative woman, her experience in radio and presenting enabled her to create a city cable station from scratch; Birmingham Live that covered everything from news, features and sports, that led to the blueprint for a further 6 similar stations. Arti developed further TV reporting and presenting as ITV1’s regional Central News presenter. She disclosed sensitive issues such as domestic violence, aids and adoption. She is passionate about presenting and she does so with her heart and soul. Arti has presented London Weekend Television current affairs programme and in the broad remit she covered the historical significance of the Commission for Racial Equality and more. In conversation with Arti about what she stands for, she explained, “I stand for empowerment: both empowering yourself and others. The three most important things in life to her are her family, freedom and her health.” The values that are important to her and those which are at the core of her decisions for herself, her family and humanity are: • Excellence – Arti always

strive to achieve excellence and she gives the best that she can. • Passion – Arti wants to feel energised and excited by what she does. • Persistence – Arti is tenacious and once she sets her mind to doing something, she pursues it until she gets results. • Connection – Arti loves working and being around people. She likes building relationships and seeing the best in others. • Enjoyment – Arti wants to enjoy what she does and have fun along the way. Arti prioritises her family first and foremost and she loves her family. Arti is very proud of her beautiful daughter, 19 month old Mya and watching Mya grow and flourish everyday including the joy that Mya brings to all around her. Arti’s two different careers; media and business have given her personal fulfilment and importantly, the publication of her book. Arti has taken every opportunity to lean all that she could in each of her employment including work experience placements and she has brought the constellation of her knowledge of the media and success into a book entitled: Positivity (published by Hothive). (I trust that this book is in the library of every college and university). Within the book each chapter gives a perspective on the thoughts and feelings that stops a person from pursuing what they want. Arti gives clues on how to go beyond those thoughts and feelings and be successful.

What are some of the daily practices that keeps your motivation high?

“Reading something that helps me develop and grow as a person and speaking to at least one of my sisters – either to give me clarity on something or for having a laugh!” I first listened to Arti presenting the Woman of The Year Awards and the way she roots for excellence and accuracy opens a world of enquiry for every listener. People admire Arti for her energy and dynamic personality. The legacy that Arti wants to leave is, eventually Arti would like to build or be part of a project for building school for

young children in India, to teach them entrepreneurial skills and character building. Arti has learnt from her challenges in life and the learning has made her a better person. She said, “Everything happens for a reason. Don’t blame others or make excuses; take strength from deep inside yourself keep the control and get on with things – there is always something waiting to surprise you at the end.” The events that Arti wishes that never happened – she said “I wish horrible things like 911 never happened, the wars and the senseless deaths that occur due to murders and crimes people commit. There is a better way to communicate, be tolerant to differences and share common goals.” The new generation is very important to Arti – the new generation is our future – so it is important, albeit different, just as we are to the previous generations.

What advice would Arti give to someone wishing to start out?

Don’t listen when someone says you can’t do it – keep the faith and know that you can do anything you really want to. Be clear, pragmatic and hungry for your goals and learn form others. Take time to enjoy the journey. l Arti Halai

Promoting Many Peoples in One Birmingham! A Cohesion Programme Event for School Pupils A Public Lecture by Professor Carl Chinn MBE

This is your building. A central place for you to come and discuss any issue you think needs addressing. “I love my city and I love the people who make it what it is. It’s ‘Many People’ because of its rich diversity and it’s ‘One Birmingham’ because diverse cultures. It’s important to respect that we are all Brummies and proud.” He talked of the major contribution the city has made; the engineering history with Matthew Boulton, James Watt and William Murdoch, William Shakespeare – his mother, Mary Arden’s roots are firmly placed in Birmingham, and the world-fames Odean Cinema, again its roots implanted in the city. “Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol,’ famed throughout the world, was first read by him here,

P

upils from schools in Birmingham, representing the city’s many diverse communities – attended Birmingham City Council for a lecture by historian, author, broadcaster and newspaper columnist Professor Carl Chinn, to help them develop a greater understanding of what makes them great Brummies and how the city has developed over the generations. Given current world affairs, this was an ideal a way of localising the ongoing issues, cohesion and understanding our differences and best ways to work and live together as one.

Under the theme of ‘Many Peoples One Birmingham’ the lecture, part of the City’s cohesion programme event for school pupils saw a packed Council Chamber here of the work the local authority is doing, as Professor Chinn MBE held a workshop to explore where the peoples of Birmingham have come from and why they came here. The event chaired by Councillor Waseem Zaffar, the City Council's Monitoring Officer, also highlighted the important bond that brings together the many peoples of Birmingham – the vital fact that they all belong to the city, whilst the city belongs to them.

The workshop not only helped the young people – from schools/ academies including; Washwood Heath Academy, Hillcrest School and Sixth Form, James Brindley School, plus Lordswood Boys and Girls Schools - to understand the development of Birmingham into one of Britain’s most diverse, dynamic and exciting twenty-first century cities, but it also enabled them to understand and appreciate what they have in common. “Do you know whom this place belongs to?” Professor Chin asked the pupils. Engaging them into the inner workings of the council, he said; “In case you didn’t know, the Council House belongs to you.

in Birmingham,” he said. “Irish, Caribbean, Asian, Italian, Romany and German communities helped make this city. That’s why we are a city of many cultures – but one Birmingham.” “What can we do to make the city better and more unified?” Cllr. Zaffar asked. “Always show pride in your city,” Chin replied. “And live closer as one.” This was a unique opportunity for young people to work together and connect different locations and ethnicities. By having the session in the Council Chamber gave the pupils an opportunity to visit and understand how local democracy works and how Birmingham City Council operates and debates issues of concern.

Leon is securing Future of Birmin SPOTLIGHT - JONATHAN ‘TYSON’ LEON

Jonathan ‘Tyson’ Leon of The Leon Group, talked to Daniel Riley of The Phoenix Newspaper about his life, his work, his passions and his famous friends.

F

or this son of Birmingham, born and raised in the city, Birmingham is the shining beacon in the UK. Growing up as part of a big family, but as a close family unit, Jonathan ‘Tyson’ Leon, owner of The Leon Group, including Leon Security Services, has created a family business using his family name, which is now looking after the security of doors, events, and high profile individuals across Birmingham, the UK and even worldwide. The youngest of 4 has kept his

business within his family and friends from an early age. As we were talking, Leon sat back and smiled as he reminisced about his childhood. “When I was about 14, I had a friend with a security company called Leo Security. I lied about my age and got some shifts on building sites, at 14! “I used to come home from school, get changed and head out to work, and Mum had no idea!” An entrepreneurial spark was evident in Leon from an early age, as he didn’t just settle for making

himself some extra money, but he got some of his older friends to work on the sites to, and eventually even his dad! “I took a couple of pounds an hour off them, earning my way at that age.” At that tender age, Leon looked up to only a few strong, powerful figures. People like Muhammad Ali, who he would later go on to work with in a professional capacity, and more than anyone, his mother. A hard working senior social worker who started the first black workers group, and has always been involved in doing things to help other people, Leon’s mother has always been first and foremost in his life. As Leon grew up through his teenage years he eventually found himself at a venue where his friend was working the door. Laughing, Leon recalled this pivotal moment, “I told this guy ‘Not today, you’re not coming in’, and I got some racist verbal abuse back from him and he told me to get out of his way. Now at 17 I saw red and just hit him. “Before I knew it, Eddie Fewtrell walked up to me with some of his henchmen and was like ‘You working here?’ “Now I’m worried things are about to go off and I tell him no, and he just goes ‘You are now, you start tomorrow.’ I couldn’t believe it! I was so happy to be a doorman.” Shortly after this, things took a turn for Leon, as he solemnly explained, “When I was 17 I actually went to prison, for something that I didn’t do. “It doesn’t bother me now because it’s made me the person I am now. But while I was there I set myself goals, to turn everything around when I came out.” And at 21 he did just that, after coming out of prison, and cutting off a lot of people, Leon keeps obliterating the targets he sets himself. “I met a lot of good people, who do bad things, so it’s who do you want in your corner and who do you want to be around? “I look at some of the people I knew, and I thought they will never, and they have never got anywhere. I wanted to be more than that, and as a young black person I faced a lot of challenges as it was.” While he was inside, Leon was introduced to Islam by a fellow inmate, and after attending prayers and hearing more about the reli-

Having grown up in a strong Christian household, and his mum having been a Christian all her life, she sent through books on all religions, urging him to look into all the worlds religions instead of just looking into one. When he was released, he atten-

teach her about Islam, as by this point I knew so much about it from studying, even though I wasn’t a Muslim. “Just before Ramadan, both me and my ex-girlfriend took that step and embraced Islam, with my Mum being allowed to be in the prayer hall for the ceremony, as the only woman.” “Straight away it changed things for me, I locked myself

l Leon with Prince William ded both church and mosque, but didn’t feel either were the right fit for him, at least not at that point in his life. It wasn’t until years after he got out, that following working with a friend who was a Muslim while doing youth work, Leon suddenly realised. “He was still one of the lads, although he went to the mosque and prayed he was still out with us, although he didn’t drink alcohol.” “My ex-girlfriend wanted me to

away and got to know my new religion. I just grew into it, I’m not the perfect Muslim, but it’s a journey.” Now out of prison, Leon just wanted to be a doorman again. “One of my good friends, Mr Bachelor gave me a job at a pub doing some graft. “I got a load of my friends working in with me too, then one of my mentors, Smoothie, got my on other doors, including Q Club, which I now run the door on.” “Before I knew it I had 20-30

lads all working the doors, and I was told that I needed to start my own company, as I had a business without it being a business.” “I started WG with a friend, Lester, and started doing concerts, bringing big names to Birmingham every 6 weeks or so, like Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes.” With frequent trips to America with his friend Chuck to make the deals and bring back these figures to the UK and to Birmingham, it was a whirlwind for Leon. “I love doing the corporate events and sit down dinners now, and it’s where I want the company to be expanding into. We’ve recently done sit down dinners for Anthony Joshua and Floyd Mayweather.” Leon Security grew into The Leon Group, encompassing all aspects of security, event hire and management, which Leon proudly states. “Leon Group has gone a lot more corporate now, working with massive clients, and turning it into more of a lifestyle now than a security company. “We do every major event in the city, apart from 2, and now I’ve amalgamated my company with another company, we now do every major event in the city, while working very closely with the city council and other authorities as well. But we want to do a lot more.” As a proud son of the city, Leon is only too happy to give back to the communities that raised him. “I’d finish in the office and then go work in childrens homes, working all night, sleeping at work and be back in the office the next morning. I still get involved in youth work, I’m a partner in independent living homes, and we’re doing a lot of work with the kids.” Alongside this, The Leon Group also sponsor the East Side Boxing Club, as well as backing a new venture going round teaching young kids how to cook, especially Caribbean food. “A lot of young people can’t cook, so we’re teaching them how to be healthy, and how to make their own businesses, how to turn their skills into a business, and the science behind it all. We’re going to be putting on an Expo in October at Millennium point about it too.” Leon is so proud and humbled that some of the people who work for him are former gang members who he has managed to help to turn their lives around, and that people even outside his own community are recognising him for the work he has done around the city. “I work a lot now with the Asian

l Leon with Pele MP’s, councillors and Big Johns too, I do all of their security for any events they hold.” Throughout his time in the security business, Leon has worked with people that he never event dreamt about meeting in his life. “I’ve worked with Muhammad Ali, Pele, Mike Tyson, Usain Bolt, the ex Pakistani and Bengali presidents, Anthony Joshua, and Rod Stewart, who told us that we were the best security he had ever had, and considering his career, that is a compliment and a half! “Working with Prince William was an honour, although we did have words about his choice of football team! I try to involved my family, and my 4 children involved in as much of what I do as I can, l and seeing some of these massive names playing with my kids it’s crazy!” Above all else though, you get the feeling from him that the thing he is most passionate about is Birmingham, which was evident by the fire behind his eyes as he

l Leon with Floyd Mayweather

Leon with Usain Bolt talked about the second city. “My plan is to put Birmingham back on the map. A lot of people used to avoid Birmingham, back in the day. People didn’t want to come to Birmingham, they’d rather go to London or

Manchester as there wouldn’t be any trouble. “I want to change the way people look at Birmingham and show them it is a great city. To do that though, I need everyone to support our Birmingham businesses, and endeavours. I’m looking to do a massive event at the end of the year here with some of the greatest names in the sports world, and we’re aiming for 10 times the number of people that were at Shardfest last year this time around.” And with the loss of Fusion and Wireless in Birmingham over the last few years, Shardfest is the frontrunner for people to get behind and support. For the upcoming youth in the city and beyond, Leon has a few wise words; “Be proud of who you are, where you come from. Don’t follow ‘Postcode wars’. Set your goals high and chip away at it. Work hard and be the best you can be. People will fall out with you on the way, but when people tell you you can’t, just drop the t. You Can.” “Support the promoters, support the security, support the young people, support Birmingham.”

Is it Time for Caribbean Food Shops to Diversify?

A

By Dr Tony Talburt

s I travelled along the Soho and Dudley Roads in Handsworth Birmingham recently, I couldn’t help but notice that almost all the Caribbean food products that I needed to buy were readily available. I could have, if I had chosen to, purchase ackee, saltfish, Caribbean hard dough bread, and bun. Two interesting points, worth noting however, were, firstly that very few of these shops were actually Caribbean owned businesses and secondly, they were selling a

wide variety of other non-Caribbean goods. Where I did find the odd Caribbean food shop or outlet, this same level of diversity of goods was not present. All the Caribbean shops that I saw tended to specialise primarily in Caribbean-only products. In some of the major British super markets, however, they have responded to changing market demands and now have ‘world foods’ sections where a wide range of Caribbean foods are available. I was in a Tesco super market recently in Birmingham and saw every manner of Caribbean spices,

drinks, breads and bun etc. So, with everyone else selling Caribbean products, is it time for Caribbean shops to likewise start selling a wider range of products that includes more non-Caribbean products which have a greater universal appeal? A few years ago, when was I was in London I had a conversation with someone who was suggesting that he would set up a Caribbean take away to sell Caribbean foods such as fried dumplings and jerk chicken etc. I agreed with him that this was a wonderful idea and strongly urged him to also consider selling pizza

and chips as well so he could appeal to a wider market. He did not seem overly impressed with my idea and I am not sure if the shop opened. My general position is that I can’t see what is the purpose of setting up these eating outlets and Caribbean-owned or run shops if the markets are too small to make the business sustainable. Surely the primary objective of these businesses must be to make profit. If the aim was to provide a social enterprise, then that would be fine. Aiming for 2% of the British market is probably too small. Aiming for 2% of the Chinese market would make more sense. If I were going to run a Caribbean business such as a food shop, I would probably seek to make it a Caribbean ‘Plus’ shop where everyone could come in to purchase general provisions, including, of course, Caribbean

products. Are all these small shops specialising in Caribbean foods and takeaways really sustainable in a market where more and more of the younger people eat less Caribbean foods and partake in a more varied diet especially when they go out to eat? My family and I went out for a meal recently at a very wellknown buffet restaurant where they had on offer; Chinese, Indian and Mexican food. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they also served Jamaican curry goat! With more and more shops selling Caribbean food products, I think it is time for Caribbean shops to reciprocate this practice and thereby respond these changing market opportunities to diversify their product base without losing their central purpose and identity of being Caribbean-based business.

Spring is on its way

On the 20th of this month the spring equinox signals the beginning of spring and the renewal of the Earth as plants begin to bloom again and leaves start appearing on trees and shrubs. It is a season of new growth, rebirth, new beginnings and a fresh start. That is why spring cleaning is often associated with this as we hopefully say goodbye to another winter. In Britain this winter like in recent times we have become accustomed to much milder weather and I like that. To put it simply I dislike the colder temperatures. I often hear people living in Britain recalling how cold the winters in the fifties and sixties used to be. Fast forward to present day as those are clearly no longer the case. Is that a case of global warming? I ask that in all seriousness as last August and September whilst in Florida and Jamaica I have never known either place to be so hot. The earth is in my view heating up at an alarming rate. ‘A spring in ones step’ readily springs to mind at this time (no pun intended) as the dark, dreary and gloomy winter days are behind us, followed by more sunlight which is a good source of naturally vitamin D. Enjoy this springtide as it is supposed to be a new lease of life.

In demand canal side restaurant expands

D

ue to popular demand well-known independent canal side eatery, ju ju’s café, has recently invested in a restaurant expansion and facelift - doubling its size to cater for up to 100 guests. And in line with the expansion it has recruited a pedigree head chef. Friendly face of ju ju’s café, owner Julia Pallister, said: “This has come as a result of running out of space, particularly at the weekends for brunch, Sunday roast and dinner. We have, over the last eight years, built a great reputation which has fuelled demand. The new space also lends itself perfectly to private parties, functions and conferences. In addition, we have a beautiful al fresco dining area, weather permitting, with fabulous canal views. When the sun shines it is just sublime.” It’s a great triumph for Julia who

first opened ju ju’s at the height of the recession in May 2009 – a brave move, considering so many other restaurants were closing at the time. Based in Birmingham’s Canal Square, with great views over the canals, narrow boats and canal wildlife, ju ju’s is committed to serving freshly prepared, quality, hearty, wholesome British comfort food. “We aim not just to serve our customer, but delight them with our food, service and atmosphere. ju ju’s is a friendly, relaxed and quirky place to dine. We welcome diners with any special dietary requirements and since everything is prepared and made at ju ju’s, we are happy to alter our dishes to our customers’ liking. This kind of personal attention has kept our customers returning and recommending us,” Julia says. “It’s hugely important to point

Jamaican Interest for Starbucks

offee chain Starbucks is thought to be eyeing up the possibility of entering into the Jamaican market with word suggesting that a deal to do so through a franchise partner is imminent. What would be a first for the international coffee house, with 42 stores already spread across the Caribbean, conformation in showing interest in Jamaica would expand the Starbuck brand even wider. In confirming their interest, Alisha Damodaran, Senior Manager for Corporate Communications at Starbucks, said; "We are committed to expanding across the Caribbean territory as part of our current evaluation in multiple markets, which including Jamaica." Starbucks already have a buying relationship with Jamaica for its exclusive line of reserve beans supplied by coffee producers such as Wallenford Estate and Amber Estate for consumption in North America and Asia. It is said that two separate operators within the hospitality sector are seeking to partner with the American coffee company and coffeehouse chain on a franchise agreement, but both entities have denied negotiations.

Muffin Break owners ordered to pay £13,582

O

wners of a Birmingham coffee shop were ordered to pay £13,582 after pleading guilty to three offences under the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013, at Birmingham Magistrates Court. Foodco UK LLP – which is based in Cambridge, and runs Muffin Break in Birmingham city centre – was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £3,582 full court costs. Birmingham City Council prosecuted Foodco UK LLP after environmental health officers found evidence of mouse activity throughout the store in November 2015. Officers also discovered gaps around the front counter which could provide potential entry points for pests. Mouse droppings were

found throughout the premises – including on food packaging and equipment – so a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice (HEPN) was issued as conditions posed an imminent risk of injury to health as food was either contaminated or at risk of contamination. Following a revisit Muffin Break was allowed to reopen as the risk to health was removed. Councillor Barbara Dring, who chairs Birmingham City Council’s Licensing and Public Protection Committee, said: “We will always, when required, take appropriate action to protect consumers and public health. If any issues are highlighted, our officers work closely with premises to ensure they achieve the necessary standards required to operate safely.”

Spaghetti Recognition O

rganisers of the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018 are using the opportunity to profile the city and celebrate some of its best known landmarks. The official logo for the event, which will see around 400 athletes from about 150 countries competing at Barclaycard in early March, was unveiled last year and includes a cityscape featuring a number of internationally recognisable buildings including the Rotunda, Selfridges and the Library of Birmingham but the latest landmark to be celebrated is the city’s Gravelly Hill Interchange or Spaghetti Junction as it’s more affectionately known. The complex interchange is a source of inspiration for the IAAF World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018’s ‘Supergraphic’ – a graphical element which will be central to the look and feel of the Championships, from posters and city dressing to publications and the event’s official website. Councillor Ian Ward, Deputy

Leader for Birmingham City Council and chair of the IAAF World Indoor Championship’s Executive Steering Group, said: “We want to celebrate

some of Birmingham’s iconic buildings and structures. We know that Spaghetti Junction can split opinions but it is synonymous with the city,

connecting both its residents and visitors to the heart of the UK.”

LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE WITH DR NESLYN WATSON-DRUée CBE FRCN FCGI

Leadership Excellence

with Dr Neslyn Watson-Druée CBE FRCN FCGI

Are you selecting and employing people with the right attitude?

I

t is challenging for colleges and universities to keep pace in preparing people for the world of work in the current climate of fast-moving innovation, global competition and economic upheaval. Many excellent leaders are now focused on hiring staff for the future, and in so doing they are assessing prospective staff attitude and behaviour. They are hiring the staff with the right attitude that is in alignment with their business, then they train the newly recruited staff through well-constructed in-house training programmes. Attitude is the way you look at things around you. A positive disposition towards experiences shapes you for the rest of your life. “Success or failure in business are caused more by mental attitude than by mental capacities.” - Sir Walter Scott In leading your business you may ask, are there causal links between attitude and behaviour? Well in answer to that question, psychological studies show that there are many factors influencing behaviour, among which, attitude scores highly. So what can your business learn from the reviews on leadership? According to Scientific American Mind, leaders are more effective when they tap into the aspirations people hold in their hearts. This means that your business, and the people you employ benefit, when you in your leadership role understand what your staff want, and then you help your staff to make the link between their aspiration and what your business can do for them. This is where you are called upon in your leadership role to assess emotional intelligence when recruiting your staff. Studies have shown that at the higher company hierarchy, the higher one goes up the hierarchy, the more those with high emotional intelligence distinguish star performance. A review of over 300 top-level executives from 15 global companies showed that six emotional competencies differentiate star performers within the workplace from average performers.

The six competencies are: influence, team leadership, organisational awareness, self-confidence, achievement drive and leadership. A study cited in Emotional Intelligence and Your Success highlighted that the United States Air Force (USAF) identified a problem with its recruitment and retention. Approximately 50% of recruiters were leaving employment within a short period of time. USAF followed up by participating in a large study that examined the role of emotional intelligence and the impact on recruitment and retention. The research compared self-re-

ported emotional intelligence data and actual performance data with other data. The results showed that many of the same components were correlated. The five factors that were most likely to be translated into success were: assertiveness, empathy, happiness, self- awareness and problem-solving. Focus on the recruitment and retention of new employees involved a follow-up study after one year. The study consisted of the use of emotional intelligence testing in conjunction with specifically developed emotional intelligence interviews with the aim of

improving retention. In addition, USAF found that by using emotional intelligence as selection criteria, they increased their ability to predict successful recruiters by nearly threefold. Worldwide retention improved by 92%, saving USAF an estimated $2.7m (£2.1.1M) annually. Another study showed that that people who outperform their peers score significantly higher on emotional self-knowing, self-actualisation, empathy, inter-personal relationships, adaptability, problem-solving and stress management. “Winners train until they can win. Champions train until they

cannot fail!” - Anonymous Neslyn.com knows that emotional intelligence can be developed, and we deploy a strategic outline to support your business to develop the emotional intelligence of your staff. We strengthen our development approach in three ways to prepare people to be successful at work: 1. n alien spaceship landed on a school playground – at Slade School in Erdington, Birmingham which launched the start of its Science Week. From crime scene investigations and experiments, to science prizes, children from nursery to year 6 enjoyed a week-long of activities to promote a love of learning. There was even a chance for some hands-on “whizz, bang!”

in the laboratory with the year 7s at fellow Arthur Terry Learning Partnership school, in nearby Stockland Green. Slade’s science leader, Danielle Duggan, said: “The children were so excited. If they love school and are engaged in science, then learning as a whole will improve.” The eager pupils helped to construct a giant alien spaceship, using cardboard and other craft materials. Slade’s new Science Club is

also taking off in a big way, and Danielle is keen to keep the enjoyment in learning. “We want to increase practical science and make it fun as a way of enhancing learning,” said Danielle. She added: “I’d like to develop science even more, both in the school and across the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership – there are so many opportunities here.”

Migrants Cel at City Univer

M

arking UN World Day of Social Justice, students and staff at Birmingham City University have collectively recognise the contributions made by migrants at the institution and within British society. Held alongside national day of action, ‘One Day Without Us’ Held across the country, the event saw migrants from inside and outside the European Union – and their supports – celebrate expatriates who live, work and study in the UK. During the day, the University’s campuses in the city centre and Edgbaston both hosted walls of hope – large screens where visitors were encouraged to leave messages of solidarity and wishes for migrants in Britain. Meanwhile, the University’s International Office hosted a pop-up Global Café, allowing both home and international students to meet in a relaxed environment and share their experiences as a student in Birmingham. Professor Julian Beer, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Birmingham City University, said: “As we continue to provide a warm welcome and safe environment to migrants who wish to come and work or study here, BCU is extremely proud of

hanced by some of the best practitioners from across the globe. “Their teaching broadens the educational experiences of all students as they prepare for careers in an increasingly globalised economy.” The day finished with a lively

the contribution of our staff and students from more than 100 countries around the world as students from both inside and outside the EU enrich our campus community here in the UK. “Our academic expertise is en-

Fundamental to our community are its ‘Role Models’, people who push the barrier of excellence and achievement. Male and Female, young and old, tall and small, these Souls who set standards that make people proud. In our Culture (= expression of the collective Soul), the first role model for our children are their parents/ guardians. They set the standards, if they have bad habits and use profanities it would not be uncommon for their children to adopt similar characteristics. Unfortunately many people who hold positions of power, systematically fail to meet moral requirements.

We have seen this time and time again in the media. African countries have unfortunately adopted this western systems in which to govern its people. This has had adverse consequences, and African values have not been respected. Example: The African system worked because the elected person worked on behalf of the community with honour and responsibility. All positions were filled by elected selectees who were simply replaced if they failed to carry out the roles of that particular office. Our system endured for many thousands of years; no ineffective system could stand the tests of time if it did not meet the social, religious, political and economic requirements of the people. Unjust systems eventually lead to unrest and disorder, subsequently fading into the catalogues of History. If we take colonialism as a further example, we see that a massive Empire was formed that was the epitome of cruelty. Having being enslaved, the oppressed were stripped of their; languages, religion, culture and general way of life.

I would argue that moving forward, and away from the enslaved mind-set of yesteryear is our greatest struggle. African Culture: The Family, our communities, role models and our belief systems are the backbone of African culture. Parents are our first role models, they instil values and responsibility. The family can help the child manifest their gifts and bring to life a child’s spiritual mission in life. Children were initiated and were inducted into the knowledge of the Nature. This simply means that they observed and interacted on a first hand basis with the nature. Students would know the best time to plant crops, to cultivate the land and to harvest it. They would learn how long a crop or fruit took to grow leading to an understanding of time and cycle. They would perhaps be familiar with the texture of the tree bark, the scents of flowers, and with which herbs healed. Animal life would also be respected, and living alongside various groups would then be more harmonious. Life is more than two dimen-

panel discussion titled ‘Solidarity in the Aftermath of Brexit’ and chaired by Canadian-born Dr Kirsten Forkert, Senior Lecturer in Media Theory at Birmingham City University. Joining Dr Forkert was Alicja Kaczmarek, Founder and Director of

the Polish Expats Association, Jaspreet Singh, Vice President Student Experience, Birmingham City University Students’ Union and Anusha Udumula from Birmingham Asylum and Refugee Association (BARA). Dr Forkert said: “We organised this event because we want to express our solidarity with our colleagues and students who are affected by Brexit, and are now concerned about their immigration status. “We also want to challenge the anti-immigrant rhetoric that we have seen and heard during the EU referendum campaign, and in the aftermath of the Brexit vote. “We also wanted to celebrate the role of international students and staff at Birmingham City University, in higher education and in British society. “We are working in UK higher education because of its open, outward-looking global perspective and because of how it facilitates international exchange. “If we lose this because of Brexit, it will impact negatively on British universities and academia in the long term, and that is unacceptable.” Activities at BCU were organised by the institution’s University and College Union (UCU) Brexit Working Group, along with the Students’ Union.

Super Model to Launch School Reading Campaign

A ‘lack of connection’ with the nature stems from growing with knowing little of our natural surroundings, and having little understanding of its wonders and beauty. All structures come from the soil, bricks, wood, iron and steel for construction. The clothes we wear the furniture we use, modern technology, the food we eat etc, all come from the source = Mother Earth - we should not abuse her. Additionally, If we abuse the sea’s they will not yield the great bounties that can be used to sustain our bodies. Supermarkets house in abundance foods that we don`t always consume, this often results in waste. Over-indulging has catapulted the eco-system into disrepair. Natures cries will be heard, because they are representations of the Creator and we should treat them as such. When a species becomes extinct a certain part of us also dies because everything on the outside is represented on the inside. Children adopt parental traits and habits whether good or bad, parents can pass-on negative Karma to their children. Parents can literally pass negative energy to the child albeit unwittingly. Our communities also play a potent role in how we behave and should live.

W

l Harriet Tubman The high standards needed to maintain a civilisation for thousands of years is something that was intrinsic to African Culture. One thing the historians agree on is that our Ancestors were called the Immortals, the Gods, the Hero(ines) due to their capacity to live in accordance with the highest moral code. By the same token there were/are also the Barbarians, a name that is indicative of the nature of its people. Role models come in many guises, they come as good parents, grand=parents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters etc. They also come as heroine`s, prophets, patriarchs etc. They may even come as `you`.

hilst other 6-year-olds are playing football in the park, or just running around being a constant nuisance to mum and dad, one particular 11-year-old is proving to be way and above the ‘norm.’ Meet Joshua Beckford - Known as the smartest kid on Earth, and the youngest child in world history to attend the prestigious Oxford University at the tender age of 6! Excelling in Science, Maths, History Philosophy, IT and Foreign Language after gaining distinctions in all five of his assignments on a philosophy course which is part of the Online Learning Platform for Gifted Children. Further still, he got a certificate of achievement for doing 9,000 Maths problems on IXL, an online primary mathematics programme. “I feel happy for my course because I got a prize,” the amiable whizz kid said. He is the face of the ‘National Autistic Society’s Black and Minority’ (BME) campaign, which highlight the obstacles that people of a Black and/or minority background often encounter when trying to obtain the access

to support and services they need. Joshua is a ‘one of a kind,’ considered to be too advanced for his required school grade, which led him into being homeschooled. Such is his incredible capacity for knowledge that one particularly learned professor named him as one of the smartest kids in the world. “He reads advance books on the body,” proud father, Knox Daniel says. “He learns all the different organs and what they do. He can name every part of the brain, the technical terms in Latin. “He’s good at Japanese. I buy the programmes for him. Basically he’s self-taught. He goes to Japanese restaurants and he orders. I feel proud of him.” The incredibly liturate child already has his future mapped out as he is planning on being a neurosurgeon; he practices procedures like appendectomy and gall bladder removal. He also plans to be an astronaut sometime in life - although his creditable story doesn’t stop there as he also has an interest in ancient Egypt and has started writing a children’s book on the historic nation.

upermodel and entrepreneur David Gandy is encouraging primary schools in the West Midlands to take part in the country’s biggest oneweek reading competition in a bid to help improve children’s literacy levels across the country. ‘Ten Million Minutes,’ run by education charity ‘Achievement for All,’ aims to get children reading at every primary school in England during the challenge taking place from 9th – 15th March. David is encouraging schools to challenge their pupils to read for as many minutes as they can in one week. The school which reads for the highest number of minutes by the end of the week gets the chance to win a brand new library or reading area for their school worth £10,000 courtesy of Peters. Gandy, an ambassador for the charity, firm believes in the importance of reading to a child’s progress. He said: “Reading is so important in everyday life – it’s a vital skill to have yet many children struggle. The Ten Million Minutes campaign is designed to make reading fun for everyone and I would personally like to encourage every single primary school in the West Midlands to take part. ‘Achievement for All’ has been hugely successful, with teachers saying that even the most reluctant readers had their

heads buried in books during the competition. It’s free for schools to enter and will help encourage children to read and there is a chance to win some amazing prizes. It’s a no brainer.” The campaign is also being backed by prolific authors including Anthony Horowitz, Anne Fine, Jonathan Meres, Ian Douglas and Claire Freedman. A live online leaderboard will calculate their position, so they can race other schools to get to the top. To ensure the competition is fair for schools of all sizes, the leaderboard will be decided on the average number of minutes read per child. Along with the main prize, there are some fabulous runner-up prizes: Three £250 vouchers to spend on primary resources with Oxford University Press, five bundles of notebooks and filing products from Nuco International Ltd, and 20 fun sticker packs courtesy of The Sticker Factory. ‘Achievement for All’ founder and CEO, Professor Sonia Blandford, said: “Being able to read is a fundamental life skill. Despite the best efforts of teachers and parents alike, a quarter of all children leave primary education without reading well and in England, struggling to read is more closely linked to low pay and the risk of being unemployed than any other developed country. Shocking statistics that we want to change.

he exciting ÂŁ4 million redevelopment of the Erdington Skills Centre offers a wide range of work based and entry level courses for local people to develop their skills and improve their employment prospects. New and returning students are able to start on a variety of courses, including Basic construction Skills, Bricklaying, Plumbing, Plastering, Electrical Installation, and Painting and Decorating, as well as GCSE English and Maths, Maths and English

for Adults, and English for Second Language Speakers. Students from Holly Lodge High School were in attendance on the day at the Erdington Skills Centre, where Steve Tween taught them measuring, cutting, soldering and fitting. These students had never had any plumbing experience before coming to the Skills Centre, and were able to produce high quality finished products such as the one pictured. Exposing the students to these construction industry skills at an age where they are still yet to choose a path into higher education

means that they will have a much wider spectrum of choices to consider as they look ahead in their education. The Erdington Skills Centre is a part of BMet, where a wide range of Vocational courses, A Levels, Centres of Excellence and Academies have come together to build a strong educational infrastructure in support of the skills needed in local areas in the future.

It’s time to ‘Show What U Got’ S

l Mark Dwayne

WUG is the word as singer/songwriter/ magazine founder/editor/promoter/dj/producer Mark Dwayne’s latest single; ‘Show What U Got’ is already proving a massive hit with its play on social media portholes and YouTube channel. It’s been a while since his album ‘Hustler’ created instant hits like ‘In Love Again,’ ‘Barber Shop’ and ‘Get Down,’ but his new fresh, uplifting banger is a reminder – to the ol’ skool – of what they’ve been missing for so long, whilst opening the doors to a new era of fans who, instantly, have fallen for ‘one of their own’ whose dulcet, always meaningful lyrical tones have touched the hearts and minds of people of all ages, generations, genres and cultures. For multi-talented Birmingham-born Dwayne, Founder/ Managing Editor of award-winning lifestyle and entertainment magazine, Street Cred, it’s been a journey of ‘discovery’ as his life-long determination for success as a solo singing entity is now bearing fruit – on a personal level as the catchy single marks a ‘comeback’ for one of the city’s all-round favourite sons. Immensely proud of his hometown, for the always affable MDG, ‘This Is The Time’ to Show What HE’S Got...in no uncertain way. He’s been singing since the age of five, sampling, covering and appearing as legends like the late Michael Jackson, who he covered alongside Peter Andre at the Clothes Show at Birmingham’s NEC in support of the British Heart Foundation back in 2001 when Michael came out with ‘Rock My World’. All in his quest for that ultimate ‘goal’ of becoming a succesful singer/songwriter in an industry that has been his raison d'etre for so long. But, as is his effervescent ‘always-giving’ nature, Street Cred

took over his life as he put his own singing career on hold as he pursued his ‘job,’ his ‘responsibility’ to uplift those around him and give his fellow-Brummies their deserved platform to shine – as it was always felt that the city was ignored by major labels – both home and abroad. Mark also collaborated with Pato Banton and Phoebe One, on ‘The Real Moneymaker’ with the latter. But it wasn’t just Birmingham based artists that used the platform, as it was national and international artists such as Destiny’s Child who he brought to Lozells Road, Beenie Man, Jessie J, Buju Banton, Joe, Usher, P Diddy, Jermaine Dupri, Teddy Riley, Missy Elliott, Shola Ama, Richard Blackwood, Trevor Nelson, Damage and many more who graced the front cover of the Street Cred Magazine. After twenty dedicated years of serving Birmingham’s untapped talent, “It’s time for me to show what I’ve got,” he says. ‘Show What U Got?’ He’s been doing it for years, with his tracks getting prime-time, regular play on the likes of Radio 1 Xtra, where he got record of the week twice on Dream Teams Sunday Show by Timmy Magic and DJ Spoony, and appearing on Ministry of Sound album listings to great response. His mum, Marcia McLaughlin herself a multi-awarding winning Founder/Managing Editor of The Enterprise Newspaper and, for seven years, The Phoenix Newspaper, is an ever-present inspiration and guiding light in his life. Mark would like to thank Simon Cowell for the work that he has done to put talent on the map and for recognising him as the ‘R Kelly of the UK’, Gordy Pix for being one of the most supportive friends that he has ever had, and Paul Kennedy for believing in him, and giving him a great insight into the industry and the future of it. Now Mark Dwayne is on a platform of his own as he can, himself, now expose his own, personal life experiences and overwhelmingly natural talent to the masses as he creates his own Birmingham-led ‘#SWUG’ movement to show the world what his city’s got, and to pass on the legacy of Street Cred Magazine to the next generation.

he 3rd Signature Awards again saw some of the best and biggest Asian businesses and professionals gather to highlight their being and celebrate their success, at varied levels, at a lavish dinner and awards ceremony at Warwickshire County Cricket Club’s Edgbaston Stadium, in Birmingham. I am encouraged that all sectors were recognized.” Also the chair of the Black Country Asian Business Association, he added; “The celebration of awarding key professionals is only part of the picture. The bigger picture is the encouragement of the capacity

The imaginative interpretations of classic Scottish cuisine can’t fail to delight hotel residents or passing customers and is very highly recommended – if only to see if you can take on the challenge of the Tomahawk’.

I

t's great to see that Grime artists are coming through especially the good ones, its been a great year for the genre sales wize with acs such as Skepta Bugsy Malone and Wiley. I mean last year there was a big uproar about the lack of urban artists represented in the Brits but this year they have brought through one major to give the limelight. There are many more that deserved recognition but admittedly what stormzy has achieved simply can not be ignored. Stormzy started from the underground and has now reached commercial success, this could be the guy that puts real grime on the map! We knew massive success was coming when we saw him win multiple Mobo Awards and featured in movies. When you see that Ed Shereen bringing a credible grime artist out like that on his main performance its certainly a good look. His new album is the talk of the streets and critics are saying its the best Grime Album ever made. The hype is unreal and the promotion you see him getting is not the norm for a grime act, This Morning TV and Brits? Who would have thought. Good to see that times are changing and artists who are not so pop getting the recognition, we certainly need to see more of this and hope that the Brits

egendary hitman John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is forced back out of retirement by a former associate who is plotting to seize control of a shady international assassins' guild. Despite his apprehension, John is bound by a blood oath and has no choice but to help him. In order to honour this oath and clear this personal debt, John travels to Rome where he is forced to square-off against some of the world's deadliest assassins in a relentless cat-and-mouse game of kill or be killed. John Wick was one of the biggest surprises of 2014. A modest budget action movie starring a former mega-star who had never quite maintained the momentum The Matrix Trilogy had given him over a decade earlier. What we were blessed with was a no-nonsense movie with a simple plot and a bucket-load of action. It was refreshing to see a movie like this in a time when the vast majority of action movies feel the need to have big, sprawling, overly complicated plot-lines that are made worse due to the by-thenumbers, choppy, nothing-newhere action we’ve seen recycled a thousand times over. In the short time since it’s release, John Wick has gone on to accumulate quite the following and its success meant that a sequel was a no-brainer. However, John Wick told a clear and concise story that came

review

John Wick: Chapter 2 full circle, so where do you take it from there? How do you take what was originally intended as a standalone action flick and turn it in to something more? Well...they found a way. Chad Stahelski returns to the director’s chair equipped with a bigger budget and even bigger balls. As a veteran stuntman who worked on films such as 300, Rambo, The Expendables, The Hunger Games and The Matrix (as Keanu Reeves’ stunt-double, no less!), Stahelski knows his way around action and it certainly shows. Stahelski has been there, on the other side of the camera, right in the thick of the action and this has given him a huge advantage over

the average filmmaker when it comes to handling a fight scene or shootout. Under his guidance, you feel every bone-crunching punch and wince at every head-splitting gunshot. Every action sequence in John Wick: Chapter 2 is a long, creative, meticulously choreographed ballet of bedlam that will leave your heart racing and your smile stretched from ear to ear. Arguably the greatest thing to come out of the original John Wick was the bizarre and eccentric underground society of assassins, equipped with their own hotels, clubs and strict moral code, and John Wick: Chapter 2 proves that it’s predecessor barely

Black Sabbath Mark ‘The End’ With Final Show Back Home

t was their last ever show before the curtain closes on what has been an illustrious, nearly five-decade career for the pioneers of Heavy Metal. This was the gig that every Black Sabbath fan wanted to attend as Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and drummer Tommy Clufetos, took to the

wORDS by antony brown

stage for one last time. And they didn’t disappoint, performing some of the band’s greatest hits to a sell-out audience of 14,500 at the Genting Arena in their hometown of Birmingham. For the band to culminate their farewell - ‘The End’ - tour, at the Genting Arena was a great honour for the venue. Guy Dunstan, General Manager

of the NEC Group Arenas, said: “This is a monumental evening that will go down in history, and I am very thankful that the Genting Arena had the opportunity to be a part of it. “For Black Sabbath to perform their final show back here in their city, where it all began, was a very apt end to what has been an outstanding career for the band.”

scratched the surface. In the sequel, writer Derek Kolstad decides to take us deeper into that wonderfully weird world and reveals just how far-reaching their influence is. This isn’t a small group of people - this is a global society. They have their own hotels, garages, tailors and armouries and everything is paid for with specially made gold coins. Everyone knows everyone and

their rules are everything. Seeing John Wick traverse this ironic world of morally astute killers is a brilliantly funny and unique experience. Once again, Keanu Reeves returns, for there is no John Wick without Keanu Reeves! If you were to type the words “Keanu Reeves Acting” in to Google and hit the images tab, you will be bombarded with countless memes poking fun at Mr. Reeves’ acting ability. Whether or not you think Mr. Reeves’ is a good actor is completely subjective and opinions will differ depending on the person, however it must be said that, much like The Matrix before it, John Wick actually benefits from Reeves’ minimalist, dead-pan acting style. John Wick is a man of action, not words and he says more with his fists, knives, guns and pencils (yes, pencils!) than he ever could with his mouth. As the saying goes; “Actions speak louder than words” and in John Wick’s case, they speak louder than pretty much everything else, too. Say what you want about Keanu Reeves, but his dedication to the role of John Wick is unprecedented. From combat training to weapons handling, Reeves transformed himself in to a legitimate badass. I implore all of you reading this to open YouTube on your pre-

BIG SCREEN

ferred device and type in “John Wick Taran Tactical Training” and bask in the glory of what you’re about to witness. Keanu Reeves is basically John Wick in real life. You would not want to get in to a high-octane shootout with this gentleman. Ian McShane returns as the smooth but wickedly scathing Englishman, Winston and Lance Reddick reprises his role as Charon, the cool-as-a-cucumber Concierge with a secret. Riccardo D’Antonio, Ruby Rose, Claudia Gerini, Common and Laurence Fishburne (Neo and Morpheus, together again!) round out the excellent supporting cast and they’re all game to take you on this wild journey. John Wick: Chapter 2 is everything an action movie sequel should be - bigger, louder, bolder, more complex and action packed with excellent world-building and a higher body count. It’s THE ROAD WARRIOR to John Wick’s MAD MAX. It’s ALIENS to John Wick’s ALIEN. It’s JUDGEMENT DAY to John Wick’s THE TERMINATOR. John Wick: Chapter 2 sits comfortably with some of the greatest action movie sequels of all-time and, if Chad Stahelski, Derek Kolstad, Keanu Reeves and company can deliver big on John Wick: Chapter 3 (which has already been announced) then we may very well end up with one of the greatest sagas in the history of action cinema.

R

eleased just in time for Valentines, ‘Mahi NRI’ (My Beloved Non-Resident Indian), is already kicking up a storm; both here in the UK and further afield. Set ostensibly in Birmingham, the romantic comedy that follows the life of student, Sherry (Hardy Sandhu), who lands in the UK with very little experience of the British way of life. He’s in England to become an NRI (Non-Resident Indian) to please his girlfriend’s mother back in the Punjab who feels that a

man from UK is the only suitable match for her daughter. The narrative follows the twists and turns that he goes through as it takes a humorous sideways look at the rural Indian point of view; of Britain still seen as the place where the streets are paved with gold and that all British Asians have huge sprawling houses, big cars and an endless supply of money. “I worked hard to prep myself for the part,” Hardy said. “Sherry is a happy-go-lucky guy who doesn’t have a care it the world, until the reality of him losing his

I worked very hard to play Mandy and I hope my work will be appreciated.” Director Gaurav Bavdankar said; “Most Indian filmmakers want to film in London, whereas I wanted my main characters to be based in my home town. The support and love we received from the people of Birmingham and the Black Country while filming was overwhelming.” Mahi NRI was made by Firefly Motion Pictures and Ranbir Kaloya Productions.

live in England all my life and I see a lot of things. I’m a 79 year old man. I live in Shirley Solihull. I used to live in Grove Lane in Handsworth. After so many years I still buy my food from the same family of shops from back in the day. Many of my friends and family shop from the same family store. This steady income over the years to many Asian families has helped to boost their economic development. There is nothing wrong with that. I have seen many Asian families send their kids through private education and university. Just from owning one of those shops that Caribbean people buy from. The question I want to ask is why the Asian man never spends money with the black man. He will expect us to give away what we do free to him. Why? I am sure this is a question that many people would like to ask. Well I can see from you picture that you are Asian and further more you are the agony aunt. I am bound to get the right answer because you must know it. Answer me truthful and make the readers rate you. - Lloydy, Solihull Dear Lloydy, That is a very interesting question you have asked me, but as an owner of a business that deals with clients from all backgrounds, colours and creeds, the only thing I can say to you if that is happening to you, is that you should not shop with them anymore! Leave those shops alone, see how they do once they don’t see you coming in the shop anymore! Personally I don’t think that all Asian people are like that, although I agree there may be some that are not brought into the 21st Century as yet, but that is their problem, if they want to continue to live life without learning how to clap with two hands.

Matilda: Students put the finishing touches to Matilda

Life-Size Creations Mark 100 Years since Roald Dahl’s Birth

L

ife-size versions of Roald Dahl’s most iconic creations have been hand-crafted from paper and cardboard as part of an exhibition celebrating 100 years since the writer’s birth. Students on Birmingham City University’s Design for Theatre, Performance and Events course have created the unique structures which featured a cast of Dahl’s most well-known characters from Matilda and George to Augustus Gloop and Fantastic Mr. Fox. The installation, which was made up of a set and characters constructed entirely from brown paper and cardboard, went on display at Birmingham City Uni-

versity’s Parkside building. The exhibition imagined a 100th birthday party for Roald Dahl, attended by characters from the writer’s books. Among the creations were 12 characters, paper trees and furniture – including a replica of the original writing chair Dahl used to pen his classics, reconstructed to the exact dimensions of the piece which now sits in the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, in Buckinghamshire. The show was made up of 1km of corrugated cardboard and 2km of brown paper, with the firstyear students working day and night over 18 days to pull together their creations. The installation concept was designed completely by the stu-

dents and is lit with specialised set lighting and includes a backdrop replicating the look and sound of giants from the BFG walking through the woods. Hollie Wright, Module Leader for the project, said: “This year’s installation captures some beautiful details. It really is over to the students to devise methods to complete them to such a high standard of finish with such basic materials. Having only been at university for a few months, the challenge of collaborating on such a scale must be daunting, one which the students embarked on positively”. Books referenced in the exhibition include ‘Matilda,’ ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’

‘George’s Marvellous’ ‘Medicine, Fantastic Mr. Fox’ and ‘The Twits.’ Dahl was born on the 13 September 1916 and passed away in 1990 having written dozens of books and short stories which have sold more than 250 million copies worldwide. Away from the written word, he was also an ace fighter pilot, a chocolate historian, a medical inventor and a spy. Roald Dahl Museum Director Steve Gardam spoke to the students about the writer's life and work on their research trip and visited the installation for a special view. He said: "What fantastic, creative collaboration. It was a privilege to see the work of these talented young people, inspired by their visit to the Museum and 'Dahl Country'. I loved the leafy woodland setting for the 100th birthday party for Roald Dahl, with his empty chair waiting for the guest of honour. So many of his books grew out of the beautiful landscape of the Chilterns, where our Museum is based today, and it seems apt that a great artist – whose main tools were pencil and paper – has been celebrated in an explosion of paper and imagination."

F1 Lead Conference on Benefits of Hosting Major Sports Events

B

aku City Circuit (BCC), promoter of the 2017 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, hosted the inaugural Conference on the Benefits of Hosting Major Sports Events (BHMSE) in association with the American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan at Baku’s Four Seasons Hotel, the symposium featuring contributions from high-profile representatives of several current F1 Grand Prix races. This newly formulated event, the first of its kind to be staged in Azerbaijan, featured speakers from BCC’s senior management team as well as key figures from within the Azerbaijani government and business community. Additionally, representatives from several major international sporting events, such as the Russian, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prixs, also took to the stage to showcase how they have each benefitted from hosting global sporting events. The special one-day conference provided a unique platform for sporting promoters and businesses from across the region to share their own experiences and learn from a vast array of international guest speakers who discussed and analysed the economic and social impact, importance and benefits that staging major sporting events can have on host cities and nations. Drawing from their extensive combined knowledge, they will outline the many opportunities and challenges that organisers face when bringing global sporting celebrations to their countries and how to maximise the huge potential these events offer. Arif Rahimov, Executive Director at Baku City Circuit, commented: “We were thrilled to host the first BHMSE conference to highlight the benefits of hosting a major sporting event. “The importance of the F1 race to Baku and Azerbaijan cannot be underestimated. After successfully hosting the European Games in 2015, the F1 race weekend continued the process of establishing Baku as a home of major international sporting events.

Wasps Support New Safer Driving Campaign A

viva Premiership Rugby Union giants, Wasps’ trio Joe Simpson, Jimmy Gopperth and Ashley Johnson experienced the dangers of mobile phone distractions while driving as part of Aviva’s new #DriveSafer campaign. The stars were put through a Virtual Reality experience by Aviva, proud sponsors of Premiership Rugby, while sitting behind the wheel of a stationary car to highlight the potential consequences of interacting with your mobile phone while driving. Unaware of what was about to happen, the players were exposed to three near-misses all caused by

a distracting smartphone that was receiving messaging while they travelled down a dark country road. The scenarios included a darting deer, a fallen tree and a brokendown motorist, with the culmination being a traumatic high-speed crash. The film highlights the staggering fact that if you are driving at 45mph and look at your phone for five seconds you will have travelled the length of an average rugby pitch. Along with Wasps, Premiership Rugby and the other 11 clubs are all supporting Aviva’s #DriveSafer campaign to help raise awareness of dangerous

driving caused by distractions. This follows on from Aviva’s successful Safer Driving campaign last year. Scrum-half Simpson said; “Having been put through Aviva’s VR driving experience, it was really shocking to see just how distracting a mobile phone can be while you’re behind the wheel. Jimmy Ashley and I would encourage everyone to play their part in making our roads safer and to put your mobile phones away when driving.” Aviva’s Brand and Marketing Communications Director, Peter Markey, said; “We’re on a mission to make Britain’s roads as safe as possible and we’re proud

that Premiership Rugby and all 12 Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs are helping us to make people wake up to the dangers and take that extra care when they are behind the wheel. Distractions while driving – particularly the use of mobile phones – is still a huge problem in the UK and we believe there’s no excuse for having to pay for other people’s bad driving. For this reason, the Aviva Drive app is free to download and safer drivers save an average of £170 off their Aviva car insurance, so there’s every reason to put your mobile phones away and help make a real difference.”

New Models All-Round for F1 2017

W

ith new designs specifically to improve the show this year, a massive emphasis has been for on how Formula 1 cars actually look is high on the agenda. The 2017 models will wider tyres making the cars just look right, the proportions better aligned than they have been for years. It shows that the rules have done what they were supposed to do - nearly two decades since the first of the new breed of narrow-track cars. It's way too early to make an accurate call on how fast each car is. At benchmark corners for the impact higher down-force levels will have this year, they certainly appear to be quick. Lap-times are already significantly faster than the end of last

year with much more to come by the time the cars are running to full capacity with a couple of months of development behind

them - by around May. With a raft of new liveries added to the impression that this is a new start for F1, this promises to be

the most competitive and exciting season for some time.

Petrol Variants for Luxury Cars in India

T

ata Motors-owned JLR is the latest in a line of luxury car giants to make available petrol variants for all its models sold in India - with Mercedes-Benz and Audi set to follow suit very soon. Hit hard by the ban on big diesel cars and SUVs in Delhi-NCR JLR India President Rohit Suri said the company was already adapting its portfolio "not just because of the ban (on big diesel cars and SUVs) but also due to the increasing preference for petrol vehicles. We will do our best to address the demand." Joe King, Audi India Head, said; "We are working on future investment plans but they needed to be reworked and the most immediate action was adopting the petrol strategy." He said reworking of the strategy was due to the shift in customer demand towards petrol from diesel vehicles in the wake of Supreme Court ban on diesel cars and SUVs with engine of 2,000 cc and above in Delhi-NCR and NGT order on similar lines. Audi India has brought plans forward for introduction of its petrol offerings by about five months while JLR have already launched their Jaguar XE in petrol to add to its existing Jaguar XJ in petrol. It was followed up by the launch of 2 litre petrol derivative of Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV.

Debenhams First Major UK Store to Sell Hijabs

A

major British High Street store has announced that it will be the first UK retailer to sell hijabs as part of a new Muslim clothing line. Popular department store Debenhams are planning to feature a range of tops, kimono wraps, caps, hijab pins, and head scarves, along with other Islamic dress pieces by London-based designers Aab. The new range will be launched in May, firstly in their Oxford Street branch, before going on sale in its stores in Birmingham, Leicester, and Manchester – though there is no immediate plan to extend it further. On the announcement, Jeanette Whithear, Trading Director International at Debenhams, said: “We are delighted to introduce the Aab range to our international and UK stores which enables us to offer collections that are highly relevant in both international markets and to our domestic customers.” Debenhams director of PR, Christine Morgan, did add: “There is no plan to stock the range in further sites but we are yet to have a comment from the Sheffield branch regarding its participation.” Reacting to the plans, Aab describes their concept as being based on “easy pieces where a handful of interchangeable items work together to create an entire wardrobe.” Some members of the public were outraged by the announce-

ment and took to Twitter with the hashtag #boycottdebenhams. Many feel the move is anti-feminist, whereas others believe that it is a good step forward that allows women to choose what they want to wear and how they want

to style it. Debenhams has also announced that it will be opening stores in Dubai, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iran, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Endometriosis Awareness Month

ant first step in endometriosis diagnosis and treatment. By keeping a detailed list of your pain and other endometriosis symptoms, you will be able to decide which therapy is best for you. Make sure you keep a detailed account of your symptoms. Make sure your cover the type of pain (is it a sharp pain or an aching pain, for example?); location (where do you feel the pain?); duration (how long does your pain last?); and intensity (how bad is your pain on a scale of one to ten?).

In the Waiting Room

While waiting to see your doctor, don’t just flip through a copy of the latest fashion magazine. Review your questions for your doctor; read through your pain diary to summarize your symptoms. Plus you won’t leave the office feeling like all your questions have gone unanswered.

Face-to-Face with Your Doctor

Hello Cysters! This month is Endometriosis Awareness Month. Chances are you’ve never heard of it. For those unfamiliar with endometriosis, it is vital, that you are aware of its prevalence. One in ten women has this condition. That means, it is likely someone you know if suffering with this condition. It is as common as asthma or diabetes. The condition is shrouded in mystery and misinformation – a situation that seems to extend to medical practitioners in the United Kingdom, as well as patients themselves. Endometriosis is a known as an incurable disease which can affect women for most if not all of their lives. However, to describe it as incurable would be erroneous. With proper, effective, surgical treatment, it can indeed be resolved, enabling women to go on to lead pain free lives.

So what is it?

The disease involves lesions, made of tissue similar to that lining the uterus, being present elsewhere in the body. These lesions cause bleeding, inflammation and pain, and over time they can become deeper and more invasive. This creates scarring and adhesions which impact upon other organs and structures, causing them to fuse together causing implications for fertility and for normal organ function. It can cause pelvic pain at any time, and not just during your period. Women can experience bloating, fatigue, bowel & bladder problems, rectal bleeding, aching in legs, back and pain during sex.

How is it diagnosed?

Endometriosis doesn’t always show up on ultrasound scans, CT Scans, MRIs or endoscopies. It is usually diagnosed via

a laparoscopy, which spots the adhesions during the keyhole surgery.

What else should I know?

Some women find that endometriosis affects their fertility and they can’t get pregnant or maintain a pregnancy. If disease is properly removed their chances of conceiving improve. Hysterectomy is NOT a cure for endometriosis. Even re-

moving the ovaries won’t necessarily help. This is because endometriosis creates its own hormones to survive. Pregnancy is NOT a cure for endometriosis. Some women will experience relief during pregnancy because of increased progesterone levels – but many won’t experience any relief at all. Afterwards, the symptoms often return

Talking to Your Doctor about Endometriosis

If you have or think you have one or more symptoms of endometriosis, talk to your doctor right away. But there are some steps that you should take in addition to this first step to make sure you are an active part of the treatment of your endometriosis.

Keeping a Pain Diary

Keeping a diary is an import-

Royal encouragement to talk about mental health issues

It’s important to establish a good doctor-patient relationship. Be open and precise about your symptoms; never downplay them. Minimizing your pain hurts your chances of getting appropriate treatment for your Endometriosis. Some questions to ask your doctor could include: • What treatment plan do you suggest? • How will we know if this plan isn’t working? • What are the benefits and risks of this treatment plan? • What treatment alternatives do I have? • What will happen if we do

nothing about my symptoms? Endometriosis can be both physically and emotionally crippling. Finding ways to cope with the condition is important to maintaining your health. If you suspect that you may have endometriosis, it is important to talk with your doctor about it, we are also on hand to offer you any support. Cysters will be running campaigns across Twitter to highlight these issues throughout the month and as always we will be talking about all things “endo” during our #CystersChat every Tuesday 7 – 8pm! Remember whatever gynaecological problem you may be going through, you are beautiful and still a woman! l Prince William, wife Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge and brother, Prince Harry speaking out about mental health issues

P

rince William, wife Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge and brother, Prince Harry have jointly urged Britons to talk more openly about mental health issues, saying too many people suffer in silence. The long-standing supporters of mental health initiatives launched the ‘Heads Together’ campaign in 2016, which works with charities

to help tackle the stigma around mental health. William said in a speech; "For too long it has been a case of 'keep quiet and carry on'. As a result too many people have suffered in silence for too long and the effects of this can be devastating." Catherine said that not knowing how to ask for help was a particular challenge for some people. "Admitting that they are not cop-

orld Boxing Champion Manny Pacquiao is partnering with a leading Caribbean hospital and charity to bring free cardiac care to children from his homeland. Philippines-born Pacquiao, who founded the Emmanuel and Jinkee's Heart Foundation with his wife, sealed a partnership with Have a Heart Cayman Islands and tertiary care hospital Health City Cayman Islands during a recent visit to Grand Cayman. His non-governmental Foundation back home sets out to assist the community with medical care as well as educational, shelter and relief needs - the mandate of Have

a Heart Cayman Islands is to partner with local and international organizations to subsidize and provide lifesaving heart surgeries to needy children from throughout the Caribbean and worldwide. The reigning WBO welterweight champion was noticeably captivated by the beauty of the Cayman Islands and the warmth of its people when announcing that the first two children of many requiring heart surgery will travel from his homeland to Health City Cayman Islands this year. Many, also a senator in the Philippines, said: "I may be a world class champion in the ring, but with all the help and kind support of Have a Heart Cayman Islands,

hand in hand, we will all be champions of these children's hearts. I am so happy and rejoiced and happy to be part of this movement." "It is an honor to partner with a living legend to bring life to many future legends across the world," said Harry Chandi, Chair of Have a Heart Cayman Islands. "Partnerships like these are not only a blessing to children, but they keep us motivated to raise resources that help deliver worldclass medical care to people who need it the most." The CEO and Head of Medical Services at Health City, Dr. Chandy Abraham, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to deepen Health City's partnership with Have a Heart Cayman Islands, saying; "We are in the business of giving hope to children - hope for long and healthy lives. Through this alliance, we can do more to support our mission of high quality, affordable care for all."

Forget 5 a day, it’s now 10!

City office volunteers to create sensory garden for charity

A

study, by Imperial College London, says that eating fruit and vegetables 10 times a day gives you a longer life. The research identified specific fruit and veg that reduced the risk of cancer and heart disease, calculating the revised eating habits could prevent 7.8 million premature deaths each year. The teams’ analysis showed even small amounts had a health boon, but more is even better. A portion counts as 80g (3oz) of fruit or veg - the equivalent of a small banana, a pear or three heaped tablespoons of spinach or peas. The study’s conclusions were made by pooling data on 95 separate studies, involving two million people's eating habits. Chief Nutritionist at Public Health England, Dr Alison Tedstone, said: "The five-a-day target is the foundation of a healthy balanced diet and is an achievable way to help prevent a number of diseases. "Whilst consuming more than five portions of fruit and vegetables a day may be desirable... adding pressure to consume more fruit and vegetables creates an unrealistic expectation."

A

team of 60 employees from the Birmingham office of Kier Construction recently donated 5 days of their time to transform the garden of a residential home run by national disability charity Sense, in Kings Heath, in the city. The garden was revamped with new paving, raised planting areas designed to be accessible for wheelchair users, a new shed, water features, a redesign of their outdoor sensory room and the removal of a 30ft tree which the team have had transformed into a communal table. Stuart Pratt, Operations Director

at Kier said: “It has been a privilege to be involved in this project. We’ve had a lot of fun and it’s been a great team building exercise, but above all it is nice to put something back into the communities in which we work and for such a worthwhile charity. “We truly hope that the residents and carers enjoy the use of the garden space, and that it improves the quality of their lives. We all look forward to returning in the summer for a barbecue.” Sense Home Manager, Errol Cumberbatch, said: “The Kier team has done a fantastic job at revamping our garden which we really appreciate.

Motivation for Change Key to Keeping Resolutions

W

ith 2017 now well under way, and the annual New Year resolutions ticked-off; especially those revolving around improving health - after the excesses of food and drink - and made with the best of intentions, GPs have put together some tips on upholding some of the more common New Year resolutions, like; quitting smoking, eating more healthily, getting more exercise and cutting down on alcohol. Professor Richard Wiseman, of the University of Hertfordshire said; "Most of us made a New Year's resolution – probably to lose weight, quit smoking or drink less - but only one in 10 of us will achieve our goal. If you are no struggling, a great way to stick by, and achieve, your resolutions is to break the goal into smaller goals. Many of the most successful techniques involve making a plan and helping you stick to it." Psychologists have found a

more likelihood to succeed if resolutions are broken down into smaller goals that are specific, measurable and time-based. The bottom line is, however, whatever age you are, your body will work best when it is given a

daily 'dose' of physical activity – from a brisk walk, to a full-blown marathon run - and the most important aspect of all of this is; ‘motivation for changing.’

We now have a redesigned outdoor sensory room with new donated items and new raised planters which will help build everyone’s interest in gardening.

I’d like to thank the team for all their hard work, the residents and staff can now enjoy the outdoor space all year round.”

CHTA $70,000 Aids Hurricane-Affected Haiti and The Bahamas l The Bahamas Hotel & Tourism Association’s (BHTA) President Carlton Russell receives CHTA’s contribution from President Karolin Troubetzkoy.

T l Hotelier Agnes Pierre-Louis receives Haiti’s donation from (l-r) Vanessa Ledesma, Frank Comito and Karolin Troubetzkoy of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association.

he Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) presented checks totaling $70,000 to hotel associations in Haiti and The Bahamas to assist residents in both countries with Hurricane Matthew relief efforts. Recognizing the considerable hardship and damage which Haiti and part of the northern Bahamas faced in the aftermath of the hurricane, CHTA President Karolin Troubetzkoy called upon fellow hoteliers in the region to respond to the association's call for support. CHTA - the Caribbean's leading association representing tourism interests for national hotel and tourism associations - developed a fundraising initiative through online auction channel CharityBuzz. com, with which CHTA, who has been the backbone of the Caribbean hospitality industry for more than 50 years, working together with 1,000 hotel and allied members and 32 National Hotel Associations, previously collaborated

on a relief and recovery project for Dominica. Regional hoteliers donated room nights for the auction to benefit residents in Haiti and The Bahamas, some of whom continue to struggle to put their lives back in order. Troubetzkoy said; "Thanks to the generosity of our CHTA members, we are heartened to make these contributions to our sister organizations. “Our Caribbean countries and the industry responded when help was needed and I wish to thank those who answered the call." In Haiti, Hurricane Matthew claimed almost 1,000 lives in the southwestern part of the country and devastated agricultural and fishing sectors, flora, natural attractions, schools and homes, leaving thousands of families homeless and unable to meet basic human needs. In The Bahamas, there was severe damage on Grand Bahama Island, North and Central Andros, and the Berry Islands.

Troubetzkoy presented a $25,000 check to The Bahamas Hotel & Tourism Association's President Carlton Russell at Caribbean Travel Marketplace at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in January. A check for $45,000 was presented to Agnes Pierre-Louis, Treasurer of L'Association Touristique d'Haiti. In consultation with CHTA, the Bahamas and Haiti Associations have identified areas where relief will be targeted, aimed at addressing long-term improvements to those affected. The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association is continuing to shape the Caribbean's future and helping members to grow their businesses. Whether navigating new worlds like social media, sustainability, legislative issues, emerging technologies, data and intelligence or looking for avenues and ideas to better market and manage businesses, CHTA is helping members on matters that matter most.

USVI Expands Centennial Promotion To Tour Operators The U.S. Virgin Islands' popular Centennial promotion is now available through tour operators in the United States. The USVI Department of Tourism is offering travelers to the Territory $300 in spending credits for historical/cultural tours and activities, redeemable at a number of participating establishments across the Territory. The promotion, which began as a small consumer-based initiative, has generated so much international coverage that the Department has decided to expand the offer to wholesale partners and tour operators. Canika John, Director of Marketing for the Department of Tourism, made the disclosure at the recent Caribbean Travel Marketplace in The Bahamas where demand for the destination was high. "The U.S. Virgin Islands has been very popular here at Marketplace," said John, explaining that the trio of John, Director of Sales Kay Milliner-Kitchens and Marketing Coordinator Keezi Pinney were busy meeting with buyers and the media during the event. "The buzz around our Centennial promotion is gaining a lot of traction, so everybody wants to partner with us. We've had double bookings during the meetings and are working to respond to the numerous inquiries that we're getting. It's great to see everyone so enthusiastic about partnering with us." The Centennial, which will be recognized on March 31, 2017, marks 100 years since Transfer Day, the day when the Danish West Indies officially became the Virgin Islands of the United States.

Touring Holidays on the Rise

T

he number of touring trips where the main form of accommodation is camping or caravanning will rise by six per cent – almost a million journeys – to 16.6 million by 2030 says new analysis for the Caravan and Motorhome Club undertaken by the Centre for Economics and Business Research. Spending is also set to boom with the outlay increasing by more

than a third over the same period. Brits are forecast to spend some £3.6 billion on hitting the road for their holidays in 2030 – a rise of 37 per cent on current levels – either in their own vehicles or rentals, says forecasting experts. Sales of caravans and motorhomes are also set to rise by 18 per cent to 889,000 vehicles by 2030. Harvey Alexander, Director of Marketing, the Caravan and Mo-

torhome Club said: “It’s clear from the feedback we’ve had that the flexibility and freedom and sense of adventure is what appeals to most holidaymakers but we were also excited to see that people are also showing interest in taking their vehicles further afield. “One in three people we spoke to said they are interested in a caravan or motorhome holiday in mainland Europe, with almost one in five (16%) hoping to tour in

North America. “And similar numbers even said they’d just like to head off an adventure with no fixed destination.” Three quarters of people interested in touring would like to holiday in the UK, but a third said they’d be interested in a motorhome or caravan holiday in Europe, 16 per cent in North America, 10 per cent in Australasia and 5per cent in Asia. Almost one in ten said they’d be interested in a multi-country trip (e.g. across Europe or Africa) and 18 per cent said they’d just like to head off on an adventure with no fixed destination. They survey found that people expect those who enjoy caravan and motorhome holidays to be those who love the spontaneity of being able to get up and go (39%) to love an adventure (34%), to love nature (31%) to enjoy going back to basics (24%). People who enjoy caravan and motorhome holidays are also expected to be great with a BBQ (12%) and even to know it’s about to rain without needing a weather forecast (5%). Other predictions in the report include the fact that touring holidays forecast to rise sharply in 2018 to 16.2million as a weak pound could result in more people taking UK holidays.

Low-cost carrier Norwegian Air is to begin two new flights between Northern Ireland and the United States, where it starts operating five times a week, from July, between Belfast International and airports in New York and Boston. The transatlantic flights, from, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cork, Shannon and Dublin, will be able to take passengers to cities on the American East Coast, such as New York, Boston, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, replacing United Airlines, which ended its daily New York service in January. Using the new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, Norwegian Air will fly to Stewart International Airport, about 70 miles from New York, and TF Green Airport, 60 miles from Boston. Chief executive, Bjorn Kjos, said: "We are delighted to announce our first ever flights from Belfast and to ensure the city maintains its crucial transatlantic links. The cost of transatlantic travel has been too high for too long, so by connecting Northern Ireland with smaller US airports we can offer some truly affordable fares." Norwegian Air is offering flights for as low as $65 USD one-way. It's the latest salvo launched by the Norwegian carrier in the airfare war with its closest rival Wow Air. Between the two, the aviation industry has seen the emergence of an entirely new, ultra low-cost tier after EasyJet and Ryanair. Aldergrove said it was “the best possible boost for Northern Ireland”. Earlier this year, the then Economy Minister Simon Hamilton told the assembly he had agreed an undisclosed aid package to back the new routes. Graham Keddie, managing director at Belfast International Airport, said: “We have been working with Norwegian and government agencies to get this project across the line.”

AZUZA STREET

Sikh temple to remove screens which 'separated disabled worshippers' l The Great Wall of China has gone green in past years

St Patrick’s Day Celebrated Throughout the World

S

t. Patrick's Day will be celebrated in towns and cities right across the globe, although it's probably fair to say that nowhere can the festivities match the excitement and atmosphere of St. Patrick's Day in Ireland where it’s more of a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter. The largest parade, though in the UK, is in Birmingham with over a two mile route through the city centre, where organisers describe it as the third biggest parade in the world after Dublin and New York. The Lanarkshire town of Coatbridge, in Scotland, where the majority of the town's population is of Irish descent also has a day of celebration and parades in the

town centre. Celebrated worldwide by the Irish people and increasingly by many of non-Irish descent (usually in Australia, North America, Birmingham and Ireland), people would be out in the streets in countries like Norway, Germany Italy, Montserrat, Russia, South Korea, Japan, Canada and Nigeria….to name just a few. With Catholics, Anglicans, the Orthodox and Lutherans all celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day, on March 17, it is very much now a worldwide celebration, slowly leaving the religious connotation and getting more into a cultural public celebration as many countries embrace the event through socialization and globalization.

A

fight against discrimination at a Sikh temple was eventually won by the ‘plaintiffs’ after a screens which separated disabled people from other worshippers at a Midlands Gurdwara was ordered to be removed. A group of worshippers with disabilities alleged they were cut off from the main prayer hall at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Wolverhampton, in the West Midlands; claiming they were barred because they could not observe the custom of sitting crosslegged on the floor. But the worshipers involved – which included the elderly and wheelchair users – who were planning on suing the temple –

one of the largest in the UK - have reached an agreement with the gurdwara which has now remove the screens. The group accused the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara of leaving people in wheelchairs outside the main prayer room and making them sit behind screens in the dining room before papers were filed with the County Court in Birmingham and letters sent by Paul Uppal and Pat McFadden, both seeking re-election as MPs in Wolverhampton, reminded the Gurdwara of its obligations under disability discrimination laws. Bhupinder Kaur Chohan, one of the claimants said: "The screening was like you were in a prison. On one side you've done something wrong; people [will] catch

what you've got. That's how we felt," whilst cerebral palsy suffer, Malkit Singh, said the segregation had been "very hard." A statement on behalf of the Gurdwara said: "In reaching this amicable settlement, the Gurdwara would want to send the message that all are welcome with open hands and that the Gurdwara would continue to address the needs of the aged, frail and the disabled in accordance with the guidance provided by Sikh Council UK." Around 10,000 people regularly use the Gurdawara, in Sedgley Street with the terms of the settlement approved during a hearing at Birmingham County Court.

Mo-Bay Remains Centre for Economic Development

A

ttorney General, Hon. Marlene Malahoo Forte, says Montego Bay remains a hub for economic activities and is one of the fastest developing cities in the region. She was speaking at the official launch of the Zierlich International Dialysis Centre at the GWest Medical Complex in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where she said that the city – in particular - and by extension the parish – in general - is being seen as a very critical area in the Government’s quest for growth and prosperity. Speaking at the GWest Medical Complex, she said; “In very short

order we will be doing a lot of infrastructural rehabilitation in this area, ensuring that our people and this region are better served.” She went on to say that the investment by British-based Zierlich International is an indication that Jamaica has all the tools to be a centre for first world health care. Mrs. Malahoo Forte commended the Zierlich team and JAMPRO for the collaborative effort in bringing a quality dialysis centre into Montego Bay, adding that the effort will go a long way in improving the city’s health and wellness offerings. “Thanks to JAMPRO we have an

agency that is there to serve the interest of the Jamaican people and also make us proud,” she said. Managed by of healthcare professionals from the UK and Jamaica, Zierlich International Dialysis Centre is located less than five minutes from the Montego Bay Cruise Pier and some 10 minutes from Sangster International Airport. Its facility has the capacity to dialyse 12 patients per session, with operations of three sessions per day and six days per week. Attorney General Malahoo Forte, a Member of Parliament for West Central St. James, said she is confident that the facility will live up to its billing, providing quality health care and service to all its patients, while remaining competitive and affordable with its prices. “It’s a ‘win-win’ all round,” she said. “Thanks to Zierlich International and Jamaicans, visitors from overseas can now enjoy a wide range of medical services, including proactive treatment for early detection of chronic kidney disease and ongoing support for patients living with the condition.”

ierlich International Dialysis Centre has officially launched its investment into Jamaica’s healthcare industry at the GWest Medical Complex in Montego Bay. The centre, facilitated by Jamaica’s trade and investment promotions agency, JAMPRO, will provide dialysis care for Jamaican and transient clients to support the second city’s healthcare sector. The Zierlich project is pioneered by second generation members of the Jamaican Diaspora, Andre Nelson and Dainty Powell who met with JAMPRO at the Agency’s 2012 Diaspora Investment Seminar in the UK, in London, where they both expressed their desire to establish a dialysis treatment facility in Jamaica. Paul Harrison of PK Media, who have been instrumental in their support of Zierlich in the run up to the launch of the centre, were on hand once again. With the support of JAMPRO they developed a business plan, and moved on to commencing operations in June 2016. The centre’s key focus now is to promote Health and Tourism in the Caribbean by providing a proactive service for early detection of Chronic Kidney Disease and on-going support for patients living with the condition. Zierlich aims to be the best in class dialysis provider in the Caribbean by providing a truly international service, and is partnering with other healthcare service providers at GWest to give clients a holistic health experience. “The interest we have had with

Internation launches in

this initiative has been phenomenal and I’m positive that this will allow direct engagement with other dialysis providers in the Caribbean to support our cause and become partners,” Nelson said. “The feedback is that Zierlich is currently the best dialysis centre in Jamaica. JAMPRO has played a major role with us gaining accreditation and engagement from Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Edmund Bartlett, while in the UK which then led him to visit the Zierlich HQ in Jamaica in November.” As Jamaica advances the development of a burgeoning medical tourism sector, JAMPRO President Diane Edwards commented that the Agency was keen on attracting more investments into the health care sector to increase innovation and services for Jamaican and international patients. With regard to the Agency’s plans for the sector, she said; “JAMPRO sees great interest from our Diaspora as well as other investors in medical tourism due to the revenue that can be generated from a full chain of services, from lifestyle to health care. This investment is just one of the many projects to be finalised in the near future that will be redefining how we see medical tourism in Jamaica. We want to put Jamaica in a position to give Diasporas the assurance that they can retire here without healthcare worries.” Medical tourism first piqued JAMPRO’s interest in the 1990’s as the globalization of health care, improving medical technology and demand for

cheaper services made it a fast growing international sector with high rates of consumption. The Government of Jamaica capitalized on consumption trends, by leveraging the already thriving tourism industry to attract visitors to use local medical services. Jamaica has subsequently been ranked by the 2014 Medical Tourism Index, as the second most attractive Medical Tourism destination. Jamaica’s potential as a medical tourism destination is steadily evolving and JAMPRO is mandated to promote foreign direct investment for Jamaica’s health and wellness tourism offering. The Zierlich initiative adds to the list investments in the medical industry in Jamaica contributing over JM$25 million to JAMPRO’s capital expenditure (CAPEX) for the 2016/2017 fiscal year. From the 20th to the 24th March there will be free Dialysis to locals for their first time visit to the clinic along with a free Diabetes health check and free advice from nutritionists, Doctors and nurses, subject to availability but it will all be free, saving lives, which will be sponsored by donations made to the Zierlich go fund me. In closing, a vote of thanks was given by Paul Harrison of PK Media who took the time to thank The Phoenix Newspaper Editor-In-Chief Marcia McLaughlin and Daniel Chief Editor for thier amazing support on Zierlich pre launch on the 5 Janaury at the UK Jamaican Emabassy and of course the official launch. Thanks were also given to

$2m in Property Taxes Collected from Mobile Units in JA J amaican Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie recently reporting that over $2 million in property taxes have already been collected by the mobile units, which were launched in Clarendon and St Mary, in the country. He was addressing a regional sensitisation session, for elected local officials, with Mayors and Councillors at the National Police College of Jamaica (NPCJ) in Twickenham Park, St Catherine.

The Ministry is employing the use of the mobile units as it intensifies efforts to collect over $10 billion in outstanding property taxes. The initiative involves collaboration with Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). “The sole purpose of working with the tax mobile is to ensure that we maximize the collection of property taxes,” McKenzie said. Meanwhile, he informed that the series of sensitisation sessions, being held across the island, have been beneficial and the local government repres-

entatives are implementing what they have learned. The sessions include presentations from representatives from the Office of the Contractor General (OCG), and the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, on issues relating to procurement and award of contracts. Others present included; Councillor Owen Palmer Minority Leader at the St Catherine Municipal Corporation, the Mayor of Spanish Town, Councillor Norman Scott; and Leon Thomas, Mayor of Portmore.

Prices in Dubai Real Estate to Continue Fall

R

eal estate prices in Dubai will continue declining in 2017 with a recovery only starting late next year, property consultancy Cluttons said. Home values in the emirate dropped 7.4 per cent on an annual basis at the end of the third quarter and will probably slip another 5 per cent next year, Cluttons head of research Faisal Durrani said in an interview in Dubai. “Prices have been falling since 2014 and are almost 27 per cent lower than their peak in the third quarter of

2008,” he said. Prices will only begin to stabilise in the last three months of next year, driven by government spending on projects related to Dubai’s hosting of the World Expo in 2020. Real estate sales in the emirate fell almost 30 per cent by value in the first seven months of the year, according to data from the Dubai Land Department, as a slump in oil prices led to an economic slowdown in Gulf countries. Cluttons joins other real estate analysts forecasting either a flat market or further

slowdown in 2017. Jesse Downs, managing director at consultant Phidar Advisory, predicts a 10 percent drop after a 7 per cent slide this year. “Government spending on projects related to the Expo 2020 will help create jobs and stimulate demand, but the impact of that will not start to be felt for another six to nine months,” Durrani said. “In the meantime, stubborn sellers at the top end of the market who had been holding out over the past 12 months are now facing reality.”

New Property Listings Almost Double In January

T

he property market recovered from the traditional season slowdown; with the number of new properties listed across the UK in January almost double (93.3%) those marketed in December 2016, according to the latest Property Supply Index from online estate agents HouseSimple.com. The UK saw property supply increase in every town and city in January, and more than a quarter (27.1%) of UK towns and cities experienced an increase in supply of 100% or more in January compared to December. In Lichfield, for example, new property listings rose more than threefold (268%), while in Edinburgh and Hastings listings were up 173% and 169% respect-

ively. To compile the Supply Index, HouseSimple looks at data on more than 500,000 listed properties* to track the number of new properties marketed every month in more than 100 major towns and cities across the UK and all London boroughs. In London, supply was up 121.7% in January, while the boroughs of Redbridge and Bromley saw the most significant increase in new listings last month, up 216.5% and 184.5% respectively. Barking & Dagenham saw the smallest rise in property supply, with the number of new listings up 66% in the borough last month. Alex Gosling, CEO of online estate agents HouseSimple.com, said: “We expected to see property supply rise in January, and it will

be a relief that numbers have jumped because there were concerns that sellers, jaded by Brexit talk, might be slow to market in January. Although the numbers of new properties listed wasn’t through the roof, they were higher than November and only a little lower than October, so supply returned to pre-Christmas levels. We are now coming into peak-time for property sales, the pre-spring and spring market. The black cloud of Article 50 looms overhead and noone really knows if that will see sellers delay marketing their properties. But if the market’s response to the Brexit vote is anything to go by, the urge or need to move will mean it’s very much business as usual.”

he former Birmingham Skin Hospital is set to be sold for up to £1.2m and it could see itself transformed into a pub, restaurant or other business and after being acquired by new hands. Sin-Bin in Football?

F

IFA's law-making body, the International Football Association, is looking into the idea of using sin-bins for yellow card offences should be implemented into the game. Measures have already been tested by UEFA development competitions and a number of amateur leagues in recent years, with a decision likely to be made very soon. If approved, the first ‘sin-bin’ could come into effect - in youth and amateur leagues and then slowly be eased into the professional game - within two to three years. The governing body of IFAB is also due to deciding on whether national associations should be given more freedom on the number of substitutions in any game The choice would be given to the captain, giving them more responsibilities and improve onfield discipline.

British Athletes to Focus on Commonwealth Youth Games

Sporting Greats Salute B Rio’s Team Refugee T here wasn’t a dry eye as the assembled gathering of some of the world’s greatest ever athletes; including Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, Beatrice Vio, Nico Rosberg and Claudio Ranierie, paid homage to one particulate winner at this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards. It was the Refugee team – 10 hand-picked refugees from Syria, Congo, Ethiopia and South Sudan - which competed at the 2016 Rio Olympic

Games, taking part in athletics, swimming and judo was awarded for Sporting Inspiration. One of those attending the glitzy affair in Monaco was Syrian swimmer Rami Anis, who made the hazardous sea crossing from Turkey to Greece after fleeing his home town of Aleppo and ended up in Belgium. He said; “Sport gives everyone a chance, and what happened at the Rio Olympics showed people around the world who have trouble and fear in their lives that there is hope.”

The team’s chef de mission, Kenyan distance runner Tegla Loroupe said; “This award was for the 65.4 million displaced people globally, who cannot go to their homes because of strife. Each of the 10 inspirational people in our team have triumphed over adversity and endured unimaginable journeys to get to the start line.” The International Olympic

Committee has yet to decide whether to send another refugee team to Tokyo in 2020. More than a million refugees streamed into Europe in 2016 alone as they fled fighting in the Middle East and elsewhere. Millions more are housed in camps in countries across the world, having escaped wars or armed conflicts in their home nations.

ritish Athletics has announced that they will not be sending an Under 18 British Athletics team to the IAAF World Youth championships in Kenya, 12-16 July. The championships – set to be staged in Nairobi - are the last ever World level youth competition after the IAAF decided they would work with Area Associations to find a more appropriate competition structure for assisting the career development of under 18 age group athletes. Opportunities at area-level competition for the youth age group are being further developed and British athletes will now focus their energies on qualifying for the Commonwealth Youth Games being staged in Nassau, Bahamas 19-23 July as part of their respective home country teams.

As Sir Mo rounded off his indoor career in perfect style breaking the British men’s 5,000m record with a 13.09.16 clocking, Muir was class personified as she eclipsed Kelly Holmes’

After his British and European record run the double double-Olympic champion said: “It’s weird
