1,800 Birmingham Children To Receive Free Book Thanks To Enterprise and National Literacy Trust
Sir
Lenny Henry’s first novel, The Boy With Wings, will be flying home with 1,800 Year 5 and 6 pupils at thirty schools in Birmingham on 3rd October, thanks to Enterprise and the National Literacy Trust who have joined forces for a second consecutive year
to promote the benefits of reading.
The partnership aims to boost rates of reading for pleasure, which is linked to better attainment at school, higher lifetime earning potential and better mental health. Despite the clear benefits of reading, almost one in five (18.6%)
children in England between the ages of five and eight do not have access to books at home4, according to recent research by the National Literacy Trust.
This gift is part of Enterprise’s ROAD Forward, a $55 million fund from the philanthropic Enterprise Holdings Foundation to support social and racial
equity projects across the world. The books will arrive in schools at the start of UK Black History Month (1-31 October) which celebrates the accomplishments of Black Britons.

By Dr Tony Talburt
For almost two weeks, much of the UK political system of government, some aspects of economic life, and also the minds and attention of many people up and down the country, seemed to stand still.
Queen Elizabeth II died. Since 1952 the Queen had become the one constant political head of state in the UK within a rapidly changing world.
The national outpouring of grief was palpable in the lead up to, and on the day of, the funeral itself. A national treasure and the very symbol of Britishness, had gone.
Whilst a few people have been calling for either the abolition or at least the reform of the British monarchy, with the end of the second Elizabethan era, is it now time to consider the role and significance of the monarchy?
The origin and purpose of the British Monarchy can be traced to the 11th century and the Anglo-Saxons.
During the medieval period the monarchy was indeed, the seat of supreme political power in the country.
The monarchy was, and still is today, head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces. By 1688 political power shifted to Parliament as the UK became a constitutional monarchy.
The monarch became the head of state, but the two chambers of Parliament was where political issues and laws would be decided.
The monarchy still, however, retained some power. In the first place, the monarchy can veto any law passed by Parliament. However, the power of royal veto has not been used since 1708.
Secondly, in the event of no political party being able to form a majority in the Parliament, the monarch can give advice on appointing a caretaker government.
Furthermore, If the Prime Minister loses a vote of no confidence and refuses to step aside, the monarch could dismiss the person, but again, only with the consent of Parliament. The Royal family is important in other ways.
It supports the government works and decisions and also has important roles in charities across the country. The Royal family visits other countries on behalf of the government and the country, thereby helping to strengthen diplomatic ties
IS THIS THE RIGHT TIME FOR REFLECTION AND REFORMATION OF THE ROLE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BRITISH MONARCHY?
between UK and other countries.
Very importantly, the monarch does not have the right to decide political events and is thereby silent on political issues.
The last point above is significant. It makes it clear that King Charles 111 is expected to remain silent on political issues just like his late mother.
This raises the question about the role of the monarchy in a modern society. Many of the roles and functions carried out by the monarch could easily be done by elected officials.
Indeed, some say this is what they prefer. Today, several European countries retain their royal families, but without the power they once had.
This is because most of the twelve monarchies in Europe are constitutional monarchies, without any influence in the day to day politics of the state.
This means a great deal of what the monarchs do is symbolic. One example is the signing or
ratifying of laws passed in both houses of Parliament.
The monarch more or less has to sign the law. This is perhaps one reason why some republicans and critics of the monarchy suggest we either need to abolish or significantly reform it.
For example, Clive Irving, biographer of Queen Elizabeth 11, has even criticised her funeral as a 'façade' and called on the Royal family to 'atone' for a history of slavery and colonisation.
He argues that the Crown was 'responsible' for the worst excesses of the British Empire.
In a recent poll by YouGov 2021, 41 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds thought there should now be an elected head of state in place of a monarch, while older people voted in favour of the Monarchy.
Some of these criticisms were also exacerbated by the experiences of Princess Diana over 25 years ago, and the more
With Charles 111 as the new King, this might lead to a few changes which could be increased when William becomes King. However, for the monarchy to be significantly reformed there will probably have to be changes from within as well as from outside.
The main problem is that even though the Royal family probably needs to modernise, it is very difficult for an institution that is more than one thousand years old, to adapt or change.
However, as Britain continues to change and modernise, the monarchy could become increasingly unimportant if it does not also undergo some reform. Perhaps this is an ideal time to look at the purpose or role of the monarchy in a modern Britain.

DUDLEY BUS AND METRO INTERCHANGE PLANS GET GREEN LIGHT
Don't Miss Street
Ents News
The
£24 million development of a new Dudley Interchange station has achieved another major milestone after securing full planning permission.
Partners in the scheme, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) and Dudley Council, will now move onto the next stages including securing remaining parcels of land and finalising the detailed designs to appointing a construction contractor, before building work can begin.
The project will see the existing 1986 built bus station, the oldest in the West Midlands, demolished to make way for a modern bus and Metro tram interchange allowing passengers to seamlessly move between services.
The first phase of the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro extension is currently under construction and set to open in 2024 when it will offer frequent services from Dudley town centre to Wolverhampton and Birmingham. The second phase will see the route go to Brierley Hill, including a stop at the Merry Hill Shopping Centre.
Also under development is a new cross-city bus route, offering more reliable and faster journey times, between Birmingham and
the new Dudley Interchange as part of the region’s plans to improve bus services.
This investment in public transport is being led by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), part of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), in partnership with Dudley Council.
Dudley’s planning committee approved the plans which will deliver a new two-storey Interchange with comfortable waiting areas, shop units, live travel information screens and solar panels on the roof – to reduce the building’s carbon footprint.
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and chair of the WMCA, said: “This is another significant milestone in the development of the new Dudley Interchange and I would like to thank the planning committee for supporting this important scheme.
It is clear from their decision that they recognise a modern, efficient and comfortable bus and tram interchange will not only be warmly welcomed by the people of Dudley but will also create a fantastic gateway for visitors to the town centre.
“Work is underway on the new Metro line and a new cross-city bus route is being established to speed up journey times to
Sandwell, Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
"This is great news for Dudley and will vastly improve connectivity for local residents for many years to come. I cannot wait to see this scheme come to fruition and change lives for the better.”
The WMCA is also supporting wider multi-million pound investments in the town centre including the Portersfield development, the now completed Institute of Technology and the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre.
Councillor Simon Phipps, Dudley Council cabinet member for regeneration an enterprise, said: “This transport interchange is a key part of more than £1billion worth of regeneration activity in Dudley and the planning committee’s decision will be welcomed by many. When complete, this scheme will revolutionise how people visit and commute to and from this borough and provides an excellent boost for public transport.
“I am delighted to see this important programme of work gathering pace.” The £24 million funding for the scheme is primarily funded from the region’s Transforming Cities Fund allocation from the Department for Transport.

Free Carbon Literacy Training
A FREE TRAINING course has been launched to help residents further understand the impacts of climate change and what actions they can take personally to help tackle it.
The training, a collaboration between the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA and Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), has been set up as part of the Games’ wider sustainability ambition to create a carbon neutral legacy for the region.
In alignment with The Carbon Literacy Project, the training aims to empower individuals so they know what they can do differently to create a positive impact and influence others to take action. The course will be offered to all of the Birmingham
2022 volunteers but will also be made available to all West Midlands residents.
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and chair of the WMCA, said: “Given our own #WM2041 net zero commitment, I’m pleased to hear that we’re encouraging sign ups to our free Carbon Literacy course for Games volunteers and many others to take advantage of.”
Head of Sustainability for Birmingham 2022, Jess Fidler, said: “After being the first Games to create a carbon neutral legacy, educating and empowering people to understand more about this important topic is an important part of that legacy.
“Climate Change can be an overwhelming topic and informing yourself is such an important first step."
‘IT’S COMING HOME!’WOLVES SUPERFAN REMINISCES AT MATCH
Acare home resident and lifelong Wolves fan went on a trip down memory lane at his favourite team’s home ground.
Team members at Care UK’s Foxland Grange, in Tettenhall, arranged a surprise trip to a football stadium for resident Fred Green after hearing about his 55 years as a Wolves fan and memories spent watching the football team in action as a child.
The team at Foxland Grange contacted the club after Fred expressed his lifelong wish of going behind the scenes of his favourite football club.
After the care home told the club about the community work Fred did throughout his career, which involved coaching younger players in grassroots football teams, the club wanted to reward Fred and kindly offered him the full VIP treatment, including a private tour around the pitch, changing rooms,
grounds and trophy room.
Commenting on the surprise visit, Fred said: “The experience of going back to Wolverhampton Wanderers was absolutely incredible.
I am so grateful for the chance to have returned to Molineux Stadium for a special tour thanks to the team at Foxland Grange. Reminiscing about my football days certainly brought back many lovely memories.”
Su Edmonds, General Manager at Foxland Grange, said: “We always like to go the extra-mile for residents here at Foxland Grange, and make their wishes come true, no matter how small – or unusual.
Fred speaks so fondly of the time he’s spent supporting Wolves, so we were really excited to be able to make his wish of returning to Molineux Stadium for a special tour after so many years come true.
“Fred was thrilled when we surprised him with the VIP tour, and he was so excited to be back at Wolves’ home ground – even making his way onto the pitch. It was fantastic to see Fred enjoying the visit, and we were pleased to be able to give him the opportunity to reminisce at a place that has meant so much to him since his childhood.”
Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives while also promoting independence, Foxland Grange incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
BIRMINGHAM CITY Council has launched a campaign for the community – Be Your Personal Best – to honour the success of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The city council is calling out for Birmingham’s residents to share their ‘personal best’ stories – the achievements and everyday acts that they take great pride in.
With a spotlight on the city, the council is actively engaging the wider community to become part of a legacy for the Proud Host City.
Councillor Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “We are on the hunt for inspirational Brummies with a story to tell.
"Everyone has something to shout about. It could be anything from playing an instrument, volunteering, having a personal record at school sports day or
perhaps you’ve started your own business from a hobby. We know that Birmingham is full of personal bests, and we’re urging for Birmingham residents to take part and share their personal best stories.
“Although the campaign
follows the success of the Commonwealth Games, we are keen to hear from individuals who have personal bests beyond sports. It’s about showcasing the personal achievements of individuals across the Proud Host City.”

Birmingham’s
famous Frankfurt Christmas Market to return to mark its 22nd year in the city.
The city’s popular Frankfurt Christmas Market is set to return in November to bring some festive cheer back to the city centre in the run up to Christmas, with stalls selling a tempting array of food and drink, traditional toys, ornaments and gifts.
The market will open on Thursday 3 November 2022, bringing with it the festive aroma of hot gluhwein, schnitzel and spicy sausage, which will fill New Street and Victoria Square for seven weeks.
The big wheel and ice rink is also due return to Centenary Square and run from 3 November 2022 until 8 January 2023, between 10am and 10pm, except on Christmas Day.
Everyone’s Battle, Everyone’s Business Action Plan Approved By Cabinet
Birmingham’s
bold strategy on tackling inequalities both across the city and within Birmingham City Council was presented to Cabinet.
An updated plan setting out council’s plans to address existing inequalities outlined key successes of the past year – and also recognised there were still much to do ensure its workforce reflects the city it serves. Everyone’s Battle, Everyone’s Business Equality Action Plan for 2022/23 brings together a range of actions focused on protected characteristics – in particular the council’s role as a major employer in Birmingham.
The early successes include Birmingham becoming an accredited Living Wage City, the adoption of the RACE Code with a view to dismantling barriers to staff progressing to senior roles, establishment of Safe Space Listening Circles to capture employees’ lived experience, and the Proud Rainbow City Partnership which aims to make Birmingham a safe and inclusive city for all communities. The finding of the Workforce Race Equity Review, published as part of this report,
show that while progress has been made since 2019, Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff are more likely to be employed in more junior roles –with an ethnicity pay gap of 10 per cent recorded in May 2022.
Councillor John Cotton, Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities, said: “Everyone’s Battle, Everyone’s Business is a strategy for the whole council: no single team or directorate can do this on their own – it has to be a collective effort by everyone. We recognise there’s still a way to go to tackle systemic inequalities which many of our staff from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds face and experience – but we are accelerating the pace of work around this.
“More widely we are making good progress, but this work will not stop while our communities continue to face inequalities in our city. We want to build a Birmingham that is fair for all, where inequalities are tackled wherever they are found."

RIP HER MAJESTY
QUEEN ELIZABETH II
community.
Tapping
into a reservoir of grief and divinity, it was history in the making as solemnity and spectacle were in equal measures as the world said their final “good-bye” to Queen Elizabeth II.
With heads of state, dignitaries and community heroes and sheroes, sideby-side inside Westminster Abbey, the significance of the moment was almost audible on this once-in a-lifetime international occasion marked the end of an era – the end of the second Elizabethan Era.
Having steered the monarchy through turbulent times, as Britain’s Empire ended and its place in the world fundamentally changed, She
remained quiet and aloof, steadfast and strong-willed in seeing through the constant changes about her – but She stayed the same.
Her passing brought reaction from the length and bredth of the Commonwealth and, indeed, worldwide.
India and Pakistan reaction to death of Queen Elizabeth II, with the Indian Government one of many who, for them, announced a one day State Mourning throughout the country in the wake of death.
At the time, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, said: "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered as a stalwart of our times.
“She provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people. She personified dignity and decency in public life. Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and people of UK in this sad hour."
Pakistan also reacted with their Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, saying: "Deeply grieved at the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Pakistan joins the UK and other Commonwealth nations in mourning her death. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Royal family, people and Government of the UK."
A State Mourning in India took place on September 11, whilst, Birmingham, in the UK, the greatest
tribute to the Queen was the way her death brought people together, a Jewish community leader said.
Rabbi Yossi Jacobs was one of more than a dozen representatives of different faiths who gathered together at the city's Peace Garden to mark the Queen's life.
There they sowed seeds in her memory, with the Chief Minister of Birmingham Hebrew Congregation highlighted how people of all ages and backgrounds got together to share their grief.
Muslim representative on the Birmingham Faith Leaders Group,Mohammed Afzal, described the Queen as a "beacon of stability" and said her death had shocked the
"She served all her life for this country, which is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-faith," he said. "We prayed for her and will also remember her this week."
A Queen's Chaplain and tutor at Queen's Theological College in Edgbaston,Georgina Byrne, said: “While Christian faith was very much part of the Queen's life, she presented it in a natural way that was accessible to all.
"She was one of our best advocates, our best evangelists. It wasn't churchy, it was very straightforward," she said. "If you were a person of faith it resonated... but if you were not, it wouldn't have been offensive or a stumbling block.
"Or if you were a person of another faith, it was wise enough and generous to include you too. There was a real gift there that was often overlooked."
The tourism industry also paid their respects, with the CTO (Caribbean Tourism Organisation) paying its respect, saying it was a ‘coming to reality’ that the Queen is no longer here.
At Her funeral, and at the centre of everything, was her coffin, ahead of her mourning family. This was a moment to say goodbye. And that moment came when the Queen's coffin was brought up the aisle.
Around the UK, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “The death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, is a profoundly sad moment for the UK, the Commonwealth and the world.
"Her life was one of extraordinary dedication and service. On behalf of the people of Scotland, I convey my deepest condolences to the King
and the Royal Family,” whilst Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford said: “As our longest-reigning monarch, she firmly upheld the values and traditions of the British Monarchy. On behalf of the people of Wales, I offer our deepest condolences to Her Majesty's family during this sad time.”
Pope Francis paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, saying: “I willingly join all who mourn her loss in praying for the late Queen’s eternal rest, and in paying tribute to her life of unstinting service to the good of the nation and the Commonwealth, her example of devotion to duty, her steadfast witness of faith in Jesus Christ and her firm hope in his promises."
Leaders from around the world spoke of their sadness, with US President Joe Biden saying: “She charmed us with her wit, moved us with her kindness, and generously shared with us her wisdom. She stood in solidarity with the United States during our darkest days after 9/11, when she poignantly reminded us that grief is the price we pay for love”.
French President Emmanuel Macron also paid tribute, saying: “A true friend of France, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II embodied the British nation's continuity and unity for over 70 years. I remember her as a friend of France, a kindhearted queen who has left a lasting impression on her country and her century.”
German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, described the Queen as a "role model and inspiration for millions". He praised her role in repairing relations between the UK and Germany after the horrors of World War II, whilst Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said: “She was a constant presence in our lives – and her service to Canadians will

forever remain an important part of our country's history. I will miss her so”.
With pain etched in the faces of her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, her eldest, King Charles III, stared straight ahead as the “congregation of congregations” gathered for this state funeral. He led as the royals walked behind the coffin from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey ahead of the service.
The Prince of Wales and Duke of Sussex, were on different sides of the aisle looking equally sombre – as Harry, and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, sat at the end of the second row, behind his brother and Catherine, Princess of Wales. Prince Harry, along with his uncle, Prince Andrew, were not in military uniform as they follow Queen's coffin.
A trumpet played the Last Post. The silence that followed was even louder. This was how things end. In this immense quiet an era was closing. This was our moment of history. Time doesn't stand still, it never does, whether for a head of state or a nurse on a shift. The New Elizabethan era in which most of us had grown up had
finished. The 20th Century boys and girls were now grey-haired parents and grandparents. Everyone has their own story to remember.
A piper played a lament as the Queen was carried slowly towards the Abbey doors, the same doors where she'd once stood on her wedding day as a 21-yearold bride. On her coffin was a sprig of myrtle grown from a cutting from her wedding bouquet.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby spoke straight to the point, describing her as “A woman of deep faith who has gone to her final rest in the firm conviction of her beliefs.
“She had”, he went on to say, “every expectation that we would meet again.
He later went on: "Her Late Majesty’s example was not set through her position or her ambition, but through whom she followed.
"The grief of this day – felt not only by the late Queen’s family but all round the nation, Commonwealth and the world – arises from her abundant life and loving service, now gone from us.
"She was joyful, present to so many, touching a multitude of lives.
As four candles stood around the coffin, the orb and sceptre glowed while the Imperial State Crown poked from behind the spray of flowers. On the top of the crown was a big blue sapphire - once worn on a ring by Edward the Confessor more than 900 years ago.
With NHS workers, politicians and world leaders on – for this one, unique time – on equal-billing on the list of specially invited attendees, it was an extraordinary spectacle to witness, the plumed helmets, the convoys of overseas royals, the sea of black mourning clothes, the security whisperers, the bright clerics' robes and the heralds dressed like a pack of cards.
The Ooni of Ife, Nigeria, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, President of Ghana, His Excellency,Nana Akufo Addo and former Prime Minister of Barbados Arthur Owen, were also invities, with
other members of the Royal Family and other Commonwealth leaders.
Baroness Scotland delivered the first lesson, with the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland reading the first lesson at Queen Elizabeth's funeral. The Commonwealth Secretary-General addressed assembled guests by reading a passage from the bible, 1 Corinthians 15, which stresses the importance of the resurrection in the Christian faith and says death will be the final enemy to be defeated by Christ.
The choir then sang a psalm which had been composed especially for the service by Judith Weir, the Queen's Master of Music, before we said a sad “farewell” to Her Majesty the Queen - it was the recognition of losing a part of our own lives.
This was a date to be underlined in a future text book. A chapter closing. But the area around the Abbey had been sealed tight with security and there were no crowds on the pavement.
It heralded a new era. Survived by her four children, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, HRH Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at her Balmoral Castle home, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Her eldest now takes the reigns as King Charles III.
The Queen succeeded to the Throne on the 6 February, 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI. She was in Kenya at the time and became the first Sovereign in over 200 years to accede while abroad.
“In loving devoted memory,” King Charles III said.
Queen Elizabeth II served for 70 years.

Was it expected on the occasion of a nation in mourning?
How many times have we questioned the valid contribution of others to Britain’s past and present?
What foreboding is being reckoned for the governors and governed in the British Isles?
How will the new Royalty be perceived by watchers and seekers of progressdomestically and overseas?
Will there be a new dispensation in the way citizens or subjects are regarded? Or will there be business as usual?
In paying tribute to the passing of his indomitable ‘Mama’, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III, addressed the nation (Saturday, 9 September 2022) and by extension, the world over.
On that occasion, he made more than an obligatory reference to the contribution of Commonwealth citizens to Britain. “In the course of the last 70 years, we have seen our society become one of many cultures and faiths”.
His was, a tacit acknowledgement that citizens including minority ethnic groups, are integral to the fabric of Britain.
21st century’s enterprise literary ‘trilogy’.
Indeed. King Charles’ timely intervention at a time of monumental loss of the nation’s longest serving monarch, typifies the delicate balance between sentimental histories and patriotic duty and responsibility.
Yet, these rather timely remarks by the King, underscored the justification of the argument, that the contribution of migrants, most of whom are (British) Commonwealth citizens, must be more central to national debates including newspaper reportage and electronic media discussions.
King Charles’ weight of the Royal prerogative and unique global media platform, was utilised to emblematise the ‘ethnic dividend’ of British society.
It was evidenced by His Majesty’s positive narrational proclamation: “But through all changes and challenges, our nation and the wider family of realms- of whose talents, traditions and achievements I am so expressibly proud – have prospered and flourished.
“And wherever you may live in the United Kingdom, or in the realms and territories across the world, and whatever may be your background or beliefs, I shall endeavour to serve you with loyalty, respect and love, as I have throughout my life.”.
The
Chancellor of the Exchequer responded to the ONS public sector finances stats for August 2022.
The Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, said: “Our priority is to grow the economy and improve living standards for everyone - with strong economic growth and
sustainable public finances going hand in hand.
“As Chancellor, I have pledged to get debt down in the medium term. However, in the face of a major economic shock, it is absolutely right that the government takes action now to help families and businesses, just as we did during the pandemic."
Interestingly, the new King’s assertion is confirmed too, in a new book entitled ‘British African Entrepreneurship Journey’ in which migrants contribution to British economic history from the late 18th century, is replete on pages 15 to 20, 56, 57 and 87.
King Charles’ abiding interest in immigrant business proprietorship including faith proclivities, is further noted on pages 92 and 156 of this magnificent book.
The legendary work of the Prince’s Trust is also mentioned on pages 196 and 197 of this
In typical Shakespearian fashion, the former Prince of Wales, now Head-of-State, was forlorn in his memorial to ‘Mama’, “May ‘flights of angels sing thee to thy rest’.”
Conclusively, aside of the ceremony, pageantry and pomp, the economic and social values of Commonwealth citizens in Britain and elsewhere, are being reinforced if not reborn, in true Royal statesmanlike operandi. May such reign continue!

Premier League's Broadcasting Revenue of €3.5B Beats That Of Bundesliga And La Liga combined
FOR MOST football fans around the world, the English Premier League (EPL) is the pinnacle of the sport.
And with good reason – the EPL is by far the most lucrative league globally. According to a Safebettingsites data presentation, the EPL generated a staggering €3.5B in broadcasting revenue in the 2021/22 season.
Safebettingsite's Edith Reads said: "The English Premier League is the richest football league in the world, and it's no surprise that broadcasting rights are a major source of revenue."
She added: "In 2021/2022, the EPL sold its global broadcast rights for €3.5B. This is a staggering amount of money, and it just shows how popular the EPL is worldwide.
The first factor contributing to the EPL’s success is its passionate fans. Football is deeply ingrained in English culture, and the EPL has some of the most ardent supporters in the world.
This passion translates into high viewership figures for broadcasters, as fans around the world tune in to watch their favorite teams play.
Another key factor that drives broadcaster interest is the quality of football on display. The EPL is home to some of the best players in the world, and this level of quality is evident in every game. This attracts viewers from all over the globe, who are keen to see some of the best players in action.
Finally, The Premier League's success in generating income from broadcasting rights is largely due to its global appeal. The EPL brand is one of the most valuable in world sport, and this has been reflected in the amount of money broadcasters are willing to pay for the rights to show live matches.

cutting machines, ink jet printing and technical crimp presses. Fresh investment has also been channelled into installing a 30-metre+ cable cut and assembly bench with matching A-frames, ideal for complex wiring and vehicle harness sets.
Steve Clarke, Managing Director, commented: “We work across automotive, blue light and rail and we’ve seen an increase in orders across all three sectors - necessitating the need for more space and more staff. Our existing facility in Bloxwich had scope for increased capacity, but in order to optimise efficiency, reduce product changeovers and to cope with the variances the new market opportunities are offering us, investing in the second site in Aldridge was key.”
He went on to add: “After a
comprehensive search, we came across a unit that was undergoing refurbishment. The layout was perfect and gave us plenty of space to create dedicated cells for specific projects and we’ve now also got the bonus of being able to tap into a new labour pool for employees.
“Our ERP management system will link both factories together and our world class quality standards will ensure all wiring harnesses are delivered on time and to the highest specification. We’ve even bought a new electric car to help transport people between the two factories and, importantly, support our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.”
Teepee Electrical is looking to take turnover to £5m in 2022, as more customers tap into its
ability to supply low, medium and high volumes.
The company has also started supplying volume cable assemblies to a second tier UK automotive supplier with plans in place to be involved in new vehicle platforms by Spring 2023. This growth, coupled with opportunities in ‘EV Markets’, places the business at the forefront of supply for infrastructure, equipment and vehicles.
Steve concluded: “In the last month alone, we have increased our workforce by 8%, with further recruitment set to take place for both sites in the coming months. Our team are driven to keep investing and harnessing the future!”

Expert Comment On CPI Figures
FOLLOWING the latest CPI figures, My Pension Expert's chair, Andrew Megson, stressed that there is no room for celebration even as inflation slows slightly... I hope you can use it:
He said: “Given all the predictions that inflation was going to climb to 15%, or higher, by early 2023, the slight easing in the rate will be welcomed by everyone. But it’s always worth considering where exactly prices are rising and falling.
"For instance, it is the drop in petrol prices that has helped slowed inflation; for those who do not drive, they are still likely to see prices rising around them, whether for food, clothing or energy bills. There’s no room for complacency as harder times are still likely to come.
“Ultimately, the same message prevails: financial preparedness is essential as people adapt their plans to the current economic climate.
"For one, the trend of more people in their 50s and 60s coming out of retirement to bolster their pension savings amid the costof-living crisis is expected to continue.
"I would urge anyone who is worried about the state of their retirement finances to seek help from an independent financial adviser, who will help them make informed decisions.
“What’s more, it will be intriguing to see how the new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, and new chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, tackle soaring inflation."
improve knowledge in all things search.
Mark McGonigle, Search Strategy Director at Click Consult, said: WWe are extremely pleased that UEFA is continuing to work with our team. Being placed in the North West, football is rooted in our core.
“Many of us grew up watching the beautiful game, having a passion passed down for generations, so it is an honour for us to continue working with UEFA to support their wider teams to deliver core services through utilising Click’s technical expertise and capabilities to facilitate UEFA’s wider business requirements.
“With the recent success of the Lionesses in the Euros 2022, and the new Champions League, Women’s Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League seasons, we’re looking forward to collaborating with UEFA to keep continually driving the search marketing success of the governing body in the run up to EURO 2024.”

Gita
Devlia, often nicknamed the face of Highfield Hall in Hall Green, Birmingham, has worked tirelessly to help the local community; and to many others is considered a true angel.
The Phoenix is proud to meet and get to know the ‘Angel of Hall Green’.
Arriving from Moshi in Tanzania, East Africa in 1976, Gita is the eldest of all her siblings. She worked at Cadbury’s chocolate factory for decades before leaving due to ill health.
Unfortunately, Gita was diagnosed with cancer and this led to depression. Gita admits to just walking the streets with no idea where she was going. She used to walk past Highfield Hall and saw signs for a keep fit class.
In need of a change, Gita took her courageous first step by meeting the owner of Highfield Hall, Maz Iqbal, and asked about joining the keep fit class.
Gita became a regular and soon started to work as a volunteer and later get employed as Manager. This gave her a positive outlook in life.
Now she works tirelessly to tackle loneliness and help others feel good about themselves.
How have you used your experience of suffering with lymphoma and depression to help others?
I went through the mill with cancer and receiving treatment including losing my hair and strength. I was a very lost soul and now I like to talk to people about this to help them.
There is still a lot of taboo talking about cancer and depression in our community. When I was going through it nobody knew. My family felt they couldn’t share this. It felt like being in a prison. No one would visit me.
I had no hair and I just felt so sad. But then it changed when I started telling people. One of my cousins told me I was beautiful like the Hollywood actress Sharon Stone and told me to remove my

see and experience first-hand what it is like and it really opened my eyes.
We work with professional caterers who prepare the food every week based on generous donations from the community, and this is then distributed to the homeless in Birmingham.
I post on social media so people know just how their donations are spent. An organisation runs a food club at Highfield Hall every Tuesday where those in need can buy a basket of food for half they would pay in the supermarket.
We are just trying to do our bit to help with rising living costs. We try to help those who have very little to survive.
Tell us the lovely story of you helping a 90-year-old
I do the shopping for a 90-yearold lady who doesn’t go out at all and she doesn’t see anyone day to day. A few weeks ago, I delivered her shopping, and she was all dressed up and said ‘I knew you were coming so I thought I would get up and get dressed up for you.
You received a special community award from the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and was also nominated for a Community Champion Award – congratulations! Can you tell
us what they were for?
It was for a variety of things such as running the food bank and my voluntary work. I also did a parachute jump for charity.
I raised money for research into lymphoma at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
I really didn’t expect to be recognised. I was so surprised. It made me feel good as I have never received anything like nominations and awards in my life.
What is your advice to those who are suffering with loneliness, mental health issues or are going through anything that you have gone through?
scarf from my head and be free so I did.
She gave me confidence and ever since then I am more confident. It has been 10 years now since I have had cancer and I feel good. It was my fitness that helped me get through it and I am still here. I talk to people to share my experiences so I can give them hope and comfort.
In terms of your role at Highfield Hall, how have you been helping members of the community?
I spend time speaking with
anyone that visits. I take time to listen to them so they can just talk freely. I help with whatever they need. I have done shopping for the elderly, young people who are struggling and single parents who find it hard to shop themselves.
I try and help anyone and everyone I can. I encourage people to just visit Highfield Hall and relax on the grounds to read a book, do some gardening or just be with nature.
I believe it is so important for people to go out for improving mental health. I ran a breakfast club but then lockdown happened
and we had to find new ways of helping people in need so we opened a food bank which helped people so much.
I also encourage people to spend time in our new poly-tunnel to grow plants and look after them which is great for mental health.
Highfield Hall has been very active in donating food for the homeless. What can you tell us about that?
We linked up with a team who go to Birmingham City Centre to feed the homeless. I went with them on a couple of occasions to
"I am so happy to see you as I haven’t seen you for a couple of weeks’. Things like that really make your day. It’s so nice to see someone else happy.
You have done a lot of selfless service in helping people of all ages and in very different situations in the local community, how has that helped you?
If I can bring a smile to anyone’s face it means the world to me.
It has helped me mentally to think that if I can do something for somebody you forget about yourself don’t you?
I have got my health and doing this kind of thing really makes me happy. That’s all I need in life. Life is all about caring and being kind.
My advice to anyone is please don’t suffer in silence. Talking is an excellent therapy. If you are local to us then please come in and talk to us and we can see how we can help you.
You don’t have to do anything you can just sit here and switch off and lose yourself in nature. We have the poly-tunnel, lovely gardens, the field as well as chickens and birds which you can explore. All these things are good for mental health and living in a stressful world.
To end our wonderful conversation, what does the future hold?
I just go with the flow. The future for me is being kind and helping anyone who needs it as that is what happiness is about. Every day is a new day. Every minute is a new minute. My mantra is keep smiling and keep looking forward. Never look back.

ADOPTION & FOSTERING
Northern Ireland
Foster Care Allowances
Uplift
THE DEPARTMENT of Health (Northern Ireland) have published details of the uplift to foster care allowances for 2022/23 in Northern Ireland.
The increase is on average 3 per cent, comparable to national minimum allowances in England (outside of London and the South East).
It has been well documented that this year, all families are facing unprecedented increases in their cost of living, with inflation currently at 10.1 per cent.
Every year in Wales about 500 young people fall out of the formal care system on reaching the age of 18. It means from that moment they are treated as adults, so no longer necessarily receive the support they had each day as children.
Many feel ill-prepared for adult life and find the prospect of supporting themselves overnight as "scary". However, a children's charity has been offering those young people life-skills lessons to ease the transition.
The skills covered include cooking, gardening and employability workshops while care leavers also hope to be paired with mentors to help them navigate adult life between the ages of 18 and 25. The privatelyfunded scheme, called Bloom, is run by Barnardo's Cymru and also aims to offer a social network, which may said can be hard to find when transitioning to adulthood.
Caitlyn, 23, who left care when she turned 18 having lived with foster families for several years, said: "You've gone from having people constantly around and asking you if you're OK, and then you're suddenly being pushed out into the real world. There is this aspect of now you are officially an adult." However she is not alone in her experience.
Darren, who also left care at 18 and began life on his own two feet right at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, said: "You have to learn things that adults do and you haven't been told how to do them.
CHARITY HELPING CARE LEAVERS BRIDGE
GAP TO ADULTHOOD
You were never told how to do that."
In order to help bridge that gap, the Welsh government has already announced plans to trial the rollout of a universal income for about 500 care leavers. The payment, about £19,000 a year, is aimed at helping people like Caitlyn and Darren to have a means to get themselves going with the costs of living.
Barnardo's director in Wales, Sarah Crawley, said: "There's support for transitioning into independence, college and education, but there isn't necessarily support for activities, relationship building or gaining that network.
“We see a lot of young people with heightened anxiety, depression, stress levels, feeling very lonely in their accommodations, being very frightened sometimes in accommodation which isn't necessarily suitable. Just because you are care experienced doesn't mean you have any less experience than any other young person."
Weekly fostering allowances are designed to cover the full costs of looking after a child or young person in foster care. No foster carer should be out of pocket as a result of caring for a child on behalf of the state.
The Fostering Network's State of the Nation 2021 report found that over a third of foster carers said that their allowances do not meet the full cost of looking after a child.

speak directly to existing foster carers and find out first-hand what it is like to be a foster carer.
Fostering for Wolverhampton seek foster parents from a wide range of backgrounds, professions, and ethnic groups.
Foster parents must live within a 20-mile radius of Wolverhampton, have a spare bedroom, and have room in their heart to look after our most vulnerable children and young people.
The fostering process can take as little as sixteen weeks and all foster parents will receive specialist support and training as well as a regular, tax exempt fee and allowance to cover the cost of bringing up the child. Fees and allowances start from £383 to
£440 per week depending on the child’s age.
Around the clock help and support is available for our foster carers, with a ‘buddy system’ in place from our experienced foster parents to help newcomers along their fostering journey.
Councillor Beverley Momenabadi, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We have many highly committed and dedicated residents in Wolverhampton who provide the best care for our most vulnerable children and young people, but we have more youngsters who are looking for a permanent foster home."

MAJOR GROWTH CREATES
25 NEW JOBS AT CORBETTS THE GALVANIZERS
Morethan 25 new jobs are up for grabs at one of Shropshire’s oldest manufacturers, with Corbetts the Galvanizers holding a special open day last month for people looking for work or a change in career, with shopfloor operatives, forklift truck drivers and sales administration roles all available for immediate starts.
The Telford, Shropshire -based company, which turned 160 yearsold in 2020, has continued to see a major surge in demand for its services from the construction, street furniture, transport and agriculture sectors, with future orders already in the pipeline.
50 jobs have already been filled in the last twelve months, but this new growth means that further roles have been created and a suite of benefits put in place to attract the best talent. This includes a £500 joining bonus, a weekly attendance bonus and opportunity to join the pension scheme.
Athletes Promote Reading For Young Students
YOUNG PEOPLE OFTEN emulate their favourite athletes.
Now, many U.S. professional sports teams hope they can use this fact to inspire kids to read. Instead of holding a ball, many prominent athletes meet with young students to read books.
The Washington Nationals baseball team sponsors the Summer Reading Sundays program before scheduled home games. Players such as pitcher Sean Doolittle read to children before the games start.
The Nationals adopted a slogan, ‘The team that Reads.’
“We all know that summers are great for coming out to the
Natalie Hughes, HR Manager at Corbett the Galvanizers, commented: “We are offering longterm jobs with great rates of pay, all backed up by the security that comes with working for a company with a 160-year history.
“The Open Day was designed to give people the chance to visit us at our Halesfield site where we were able to show them our business, what we do and how they can play a vital role in our growth. We were willing give full training and development, with lots of opportunities for progression, with many of our senior team leaders starting with us and working their way up.”
Corbetts the Galvanizers has been supplying world class hot dip galvanizing to thousands of customers across the UK and Europe for 162 years. This process is the most effective and environmentally friendly way to protect steel from the elements and provides a longterm solution to corrosion (rust) and maintenance free protection in
excess of 100 years.
From its purpose-built facility in Telford, it operates several galvanizing baths that give it the opportunity to process in excess of 50,000 tonnes every year and the ability to double dip material up to a length of 14 metres.
“During the Open Day, also introduced them to the Iron Duke Academy, a new initiative that has been designed to help people get started in our sector and gives them clear pathways for progression in our business,” pointed out Natalie.
“There has been a lot of investment in training, both internally and bringing external specialists in. This equates to a bespoke plan for every employee that not only looks to give them the work skills we need, but also supports them with general life skills, such as English language and maths.”
Corbetts the Galvanizers’ Open Day took place on Saturday September 10.

ballpark, but it’s also a great time to get lost in a good book,” Doolittle said.
Ryan Yarbrough, a pitcher with the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team, remembers reading books with his mother and magazines with his father when he was a child. Now he has a family of his own.
“There was a time when I was growing up when my parents, especially my mom, would read a book chapter by chapter every night before bed,” he said. “Now, with my daughter, we read to her every night.”
In 2010, retired Buffalo Bills football player Andre Reed, started a foundation that encourages children to devote at least 30 minutes each day to reading.
A YouGov poll of 2,128 adults for Barnardo’s and Citizens Advice found 73% of parents said the expense of uniforms was a source of stress. Government guidelines issued to schools in England say school uniforms must be reasonably priced and widely available.
But Citizen’s Advice said many schools were ignoring the advice, aimed at helping parents on low incomes. It said seven out of the eight schools in one English borough were not following the advice, issued by the government last year in a bid to help parents on low incomes.
Delroy Pomell, director for education at Barnardo’s, said: “Children and families living in poverty face numerous challenges including poor housing, poor health and poor nutrition. Starting the first day of school with the right uniform shouldn’t become yet another source of stress.”

‘WONDER WOMAN’ POET AWARDED HONORARY DEGREE
An inspiring poet has been awarded a Doctor of Letters by the University of Wolverhampton for being a true advocate for people with disabilities through the power of writing.
Originally from India, Kuli Kohli moved to Wolverhampton with her family at the age of two and has since lived and worked in the city, raising the profile of poetry.
Born with mild cerebral palsy, Kuli has faced a few struggles over the years but has overcome many obstacles by expressing herself through poetry.
Kuli discovered a true love for writing and poetry at a young age, inspired by her teacher at Penn Hall School in Wolverhampton. Following education, Kuli enrolled on a
youth training scheme, which led her to full time employment at Wolverhampton City Council for 32 years where she has worked in various roles and departments.
She’s worked as a Welfare Rights Support Worker in Social Services for 20 years.
Alongside her role at the City Council, Kuli continued to pursue her passion for writing but kept her poetry private for many years.
In recent years, following lots of support and encouragement, Kuli shared her work and is now a published poet. This success has given Kuli the confidence to perform poetry readings and has performed at many events, all over the world.
Kuli said: “I have had a passion for writing since childhood; being able to write has opened all sorts of
possibilities for me because I struggle to express myself through speech.
"I would like to thank the University for this great honour, I never thought I would ever hold a degree, and this is another dream come true.
"I have been given invaluable guidance and encouragement by different people at different points of my life. Now it is my turn to pass on the knowledge I have gained over the years, if I can do this, so can you!”
Kuli’s latest full poetry collection of ‘A Wonder Woman’ - a powerful collection of poems of experience and wisdom, the innocence of the world and the wonder of its various beauties and struggles – launched last April.
The mother of three also runs a Punjabi Women’s Writing Group in Wolverhampton and was a dedicated member of
Blakenhall Writers’ Group for over 10 years. She writes and is involved in many projects with Disability Arts Online.
Kuli’s emotional life story has also been featured on BBC News online and appeared on BBC One's Sunday Morning Live show. Now retired from the Council, Kuli is now the City of Wolverhampton’s Poet Laureate – a two-year honorary position that encourages and raises the profile of poetry and the city.
Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise. The University’s graduation ceremonies took place at the Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton, from Monday 5 September until Saturday 10 September 2022.

Birmingham Royal Ballet announces season programme
Hot off the heels of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s triple bill On Your Marks! presented as part of Birmingham International Dance Festival and Birmingham 2022 Festival, and the critically acclaimed run of Carlos Acosta’s new production of Don Quixote, which toured the UK earlier this year, the company turns its attention to a busy autumn/ winter schedule that balances a contemporary and classical repertoire to create a season with something for everyone.
Carlos said: “Twenty Twenty two has been such an exciting time for the company. We were delighted to bring our Don Quixote to packed houses at Birmingham Hippodrome and more recently twelve of our dancers performed at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony - after which the company is now taking a wellearned break.
“But everyone will hit the ground running on their return as we look forward to presenting our ambitious triple bill Into
The Music in the city. It’s been my ambition to programme this triple bill ever since I joined the company, and it will showcase some of the most important contemporary and classic choreographers so I’m very excited to share it here in Birmingham. We have a revival of Sir Peter Wright’s sublime Coppélia and although temperatures are rising - we are also turning our attention
to The Nutcracker, which has undergone a major refurbishment to make it even more luxurious for Birmingham.
“We also look forward to some very exciting announcements in this period for the 23/24 season. Watch this space!”
Birmingham Royal Ballet’s autumn triple bill celebrates the marriage of music and movement. UK and World premieres and
rarely seen work in this unmissable mixed programme, with each piece set to a major orchestral score performed live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia. The programme, at Birmingham Hippodrome, includes: ‘Into The Music’ (2122 October) ‘Coppélia’ (26-29 October) and ‘The Nutcracker’ (19 November-10 December).

DISNEY’S The Lion King RETURNS
TO BIRMINGHAM HIPPODROME
The Walt Disney Company UK and Ireland and Birmingham Hippodrome have announced that Disney’s The Lion King will return to the Hippodrome next summer.
The internationally acclaimed production will come to Birmingham for 10 weeks from Thursday 6 July to Saturday 16 September 2023. Priority tickets will be available from 11am Tuesday 11 October*. The general sale will begin at 11am on Friday 14 October.
The show returns to Birmingham for the first time since 2013, when it enjoyed a triumphant sell out run.
Birmingham Hippodrome Artistic Director and Chief Executive Officer, Jon Gilchrist said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome The Lion King to Birmingham Hippodrome for an amazing ten week run next Summer.
"It’s such an iconic production and we’re really proud that we can bring this internationally renowned
show to the West Midlands as part of our stellar season next year.”
The story of The Lion King leaps into life using spectacular masks, puppets and costumes to tell the story of Simba's epic adventures, as he struggles with the responsibilities of adulthood and becoming king.
Julie Taymor’s internationally celebrated stage adaptation of The Lion King opened on Broadway in 1997 and 25 global productions in nine different languages have been created since then (English, Japanese, German, Korean, French, Dutch, Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese).
The Lion King is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, under the direction of Thomas Schumacher.
The previous tour of The Lion King broke attendance records across the nation. Since the UK premiere in 1999, The Lion King London has entertained more than 16 million theatregoers and is the sixth longest-running West End musical of all time.
The stunning artistry of the production is the work of a team of
designers which drew on diverse cultural influences to recreate the rich colours and vast expanses of the African savanna in this daring and inspiring reinvention of one of the most successful animated feature films of all time.
Julie Taymor, one of the world’s most innovative directors, brought a vast array of disciplines to The Lion King, including extensive experience staging epic theatre and opera productions, exploring classic myths through ritualised puppetry, mask, and movement.
The Lion King was the first musical Taymor directed in the commercial theatre and she made Broadway history by becoming the first woman to win the Tony Award® for Best Director of a Musical.
Scenic design is by British designer Richard Hudson and lighting is by Donald Holder. Costume design is by Julie Taymor, and choreography by Garth Fagan. The book was adapted by Roger Allers, who codirected the animated feature and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay.
The original score from the animated film was expanded for the stage and now features 15 musical numbers. As well as writing completely new songs, South African composer Lebo M created an evocative blend of African rhythms and chorales, with additional material by Julie Taymor and Mark Mancina.
Elton John and Tim Rice have added three new numbers to the five that they wrote for the awardwinning score of the animated film.
The resulting sound of The Lion King is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, including the Academy Award®-winning Can You Feel The Love Tonight and the haunting Shadowland.

HOW A BAHAMIAN CHEF
IS EMPOWERING OTHERS
Chef Chanté Basden, an alumna of the U.S. State Department’s Academy for Women Entrepreneurs, rebuilt her bakery and supported her community after Hurricane Dorian in 2019. She serves mouth-watering guava cream cheese Danish pastries at her Bahamas Tastiest Bakery.
But yummy pastries are far from her only passion. The Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) alumna also uses her cooking and entrepreneurial skills to support her community of Abaco, an island in The Bahamas.
While Basden has fond childhood memories of learning to cook with her grandma, her passion for helping others was born out of crisis. In 2019, as Hurricane Dorian approached, she baked and distributed bread until the storm hit Abaco.
Dorian destroyed much of the island, including her family bakery. Yet she says she resolved to turn the setback into an opportunity. “Instead of allowing that to defeat me,” Basden says, she felt resilient. “I thought, ‘Chanté, you’re bigger than this storm.’”
Seen at her Bahamas Tastiest Bakery, she is one of more than 280 women who have participated in AWE in The Bahamas. Now she uses her cooking skills, as well as the business strategies she learned through the U.S. State Department’s AWE program, to
help those around her.
She started a fund to feed the hungry and teaches simple, cost-effective recipes that help others produce their own bread or other food — important skills when COVID-19 supply chain disruptions mean rising food prices. At her Chef Store, a second business Chanté launched to provide restaurants with ingredients and other supplies, she instructs her female staff on how to run a business.
“If you don’t have a plan, you plan to fail,” she says. Chanté learned to instruct others on entrepreneurship in part through AWE, which gives women the knowledge, networks and access they need to launch and scale successful businesses.
More than 16,000 women in 80 countries have participated, including over 280 in The Bahamas. The U.S. Embassy in Nassau also has forged partnerships with local institutions to support long-term female entrepreneurship.
The Small Business Development Centre, the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation, and the Bahamas Development Bank have all supported the AWE program in The Bahamas. The must thus obtained is kept in steel containers at a low temperature to preserve its freshness.
This is followed by fermentation in autoclaves for almost 40 days at a controlled temperature of 14-15° C with the addition of selected yeasts (Charmat method).
Bottega Gold is characterised by distinct fruity aromas of apple, pear and exotic fruit and a fresh flavour with a dry, fruity aftertaste. Perfect as an aperitif, it lends itself well to the preparation of tasty cocktails (Bellini, Rossini).
It is also a sparkling wine for the whole meal: from starters to first courses of all types and fish main courses. The packaging is completed by the special label, the shape of which recalls the foam of the newly uncorked wine.

WHAT HAPPENED IN EDGY
VEDGE STAYS A VEGAN FOODGASM EXPERIENCE
By Dee Burrowes
Strange though it may seem, in times gone by a catalogue of the finest vegan restaurants in the Cayman Islands would have been agonisingly slender.
In relation to culinary trends, consuming a vegan diet which eliminates meat and animal products have seen an appreciable boom over the past few years.
Talk about the lovely dishes on the menu at the Edgy Vedge has certainly gotten you in the palm of their hands. With its effortless
yet sophisticated ambience this speciality eatery is leaving no stone unturned.
Right at this time, where there has been a great deal of savour experimentation, even the most finicky of customers need ingenious haute cuisine escapades.
It cannot be consumed only on flavour and pleasing to the eyes garnishing skills any longer. In this day and age, it’s of the essence to arouse hearing, mind and sight –the gastronomic adventure to be had.
Veganism and plant based lifestyle
has soared, much to the approval of many athletes, celebrities and a plethora of media influencers are musing compliments of a more holistic perspective. Comparably, needless to say, the trend shares similarities with meditation, yoga and wellbeing habits that have heightened in cyberspace fired up by mavens.
It is of no surprise that veganism has swiftly ballooned through the roof to become more mainstream. What a piece of cake it is, to glide yourself around the world as one continues to keep going
and consuming fully plant-based. No shortage of brilliant vegan restaurants that are resolute to satisfying your vegan taste buds and doing so well.
The Edgy Vedge has just opened its very own vegan restaurant in the heart of George Town, Grand Cayman – Camana Bay to be exact. Us vegans couldn’t be more excited - this place was a beautiful surprise.
The location evokes a sense of decorum. Food for every mood exists on the menu. An emotional sensation - a foodgasm resulting five minutes into the meal, somewhat deeply spiritual flaunting how delectable, nutrients-filled, versatile and wholesome vegan food is in actual fact.
‘As the name implies this is a feeling of euphoria that occurs when food is consumed that gives pure mental happiness transforming flavoursome and tasteful bites.’
And that’s Foodgasm. Having a dose of foodgasm is the real deal at the Edgy Vedge - insanely delicious admittedly.
Armed with a brilliant idea, from an at home baked banana bread during the pandemic that was deliciously mastered into a mouthwatering quick bread to what is now a vegan inspired restaurant.
The concept came into being with huge admiration in May 2020 as Sian and Christina (now proud owners) started sharing vegan delicacies.
It was the start of what is to come from Christina's amazing vegan banana bread, action was put into motion and The Edgy Vedge was delivered not without the braxton hicks and labour pains that came with starting a new business.
What the restaurant is today is a masterpiece of culinary exposure to creating unforgettable moments in the kitchen right to the table of ravenous diners.
Who doesn't love a great meal? It’s an indispensable bonding
element of celebrating, laughing, working and being able to do many things around the food table. As we all need food to sustain ourselves.
At the Edgy Vedge, you are summoned to go by and explore where great taste meets fantastic vibe. The food is authentic, succulent and made with the highest quality of ingredients.
Once you’ve tried it for yourself, there will be an awakened palate, finger licking and clean your plate deep south choir singing hallelujah moment.
It’s a validation that the satisfying tasty cauliflower wings are a must have ultimate vegan hack that were immensely flavourful, tenderly marinated and you will devour the second they are placed in front of you.
The Mediterranean ‘must have’ pizza had the same yummy effect with a crispy crust topped with freshly baked whole plant ingredients and is super healthy.
Suffice to say, with garden fresh, vibrant flavours at every angle, even the old-school carnivores will have a jolly good time at the Edgy Vedge.
It’s a reality of how the restaurant industry has changed consumer’s behaviour quite often as fads come and go however plant-based options are here to stay and flourish.
We look forward to a full dining experience with the perfect ambience of the restaurant. The vibe of the Edgy Vedge is something
the restaurant industry.
I caught up with the owners for a few moments by sheer chance I was introduced to them who shared their optimism of the restaurant.
It’s very gratifying as this spot strives to be on par with the best kind of vegan cuisine where there is a warm reception to pop in and be cozy.
Very blessed to be having a life on this diverse island then out of blue and bang up on the scene an emerging concept or nouvelle cuisine that in all respects remains unbelievable.
Regardless of economic awkwardness - the surging market price of consumer goods, food, rent, interest rates and with the cost of living increases.
Despite the constraint on us and purse strings - restaurateurs and passionate foodies are regaining their feet to the defiance of opening a new restaurant post pandemic.
As new restaurants open it surely displays the dazzling outlook of a hospitality industry flooded with artistry and dexterity. Restaurateurs are elated to be accepting more and more customers.
It can be a doggy dog world, out there for fresh faced new restaurant however with Internationally award winning Executive Vegan Chef Doug McNish hailing from Toronto on the local dining scene there is no fear whatsoever.
With his skills to work, the act as a result will have on our plates
astounding that cannot be measured – at best felt by its many patrons. All things being equal, a jubilant team sets the tone that customers have noticed the minute they walk into the restaurant.
Courtesy was the order of the day extended with politeness and sound mannerisms that the staff showed towards the incoming guests.
Everyone appreciates a pleasant reception and a generous hospitality upon entrance – that was a prelude dished out (literally). Such a hallmark, first touch point in forming a profound good impression.
The eatery prides themselves on quality of service with a smile that has shaped the perception of whoever enters the establishment.
Still in their early days, with the lifting of travel restrictions for unvaccinated travellers to the Cayman Islands which gives more scope for more bumps on seats for
enticing food with signs that include becoming weak in the knees. It makes you want to talk about pleasurable experience in every scrumptious bite from each dish prepared.
Admittedly, it is the pull of the aroma and the sharpness as a tack of chefmanship with the finest and greatest culinary experience.
Even though life is slowly but surely picking up speed to make a full recovery from the pandemic - it has been a taxing couple of years for many restaurants and foodservice businesses.
Restaurants, similar to the Edgy Vedge concept will have to reevaluate their business module and strategy to make room for customer experiences and innovativeness to keep their head above water.
Fostering the diversity of food comes with cultivating a course of actions that relates to the authentic brand which is fundamental for the restaurant.
To sum it all up the Edgy Vedge business model will need to take full advantage of an omnichannel dipping into multiple revenue streams.
We are bright-eyed and bushytailed to discover what this spot continues to come up with. This vegan restaurant on island should be pencilled on your list of goto restaurants where contriving dining, superb service and a soothing atmosphere are assured is definitely The Edgy Vedge.

VX Duse Shares His New Single ‘Spinnin’
BEING BORN and raised in south London to a family with Colombian heritage provides the basis for VX Duse’s genre-dabbling music.
On one hand, Duse was inspired by the varied sounds of London: UK drill from his near neighbours 67 and the buzzing new crop of trap and R&B artists.
But on the other he has been embedded in Latin American sounds since birth, with Panamanian legend Rubén Blades and salsa trailblazers Fania All-Stars booming from the family stereo. That rich, cultural mix of influences is infused in VX Duse’s new single ‘Spinnin’.
‘Spinnin’ opens with VX Duse’s vocal drifting atmospherically over a beefy bassline and brusque alt-R&B beats, creating a laidback after party vibe. He then hits harder with the hook, layering his falsetto with a pitch-shifted vocal harmony as MG’sproduction swells in intensity. "

The Bros Landreth Announce UK Tour
ALTERNATIVE CANADIAN duo The Bros. Landreth will be touring their acclaimed new album ‘Come Morning’ around the UK in September 2022.
The tour will kick off on 1st September with the band’s biggest UK show to date at the legendary Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
Other venues around the country include the likes of the iconic Thekla in Bristol, Derby’s The Venue and the Academy 3 in Manchester. Scotland and Wales will also see shows in Glasgow and Narberth, respectively.
The most immersive, emotive record of the Landreths' career, ‘Come Morning’ finds brothers
Joey and Dave lacing their melody-driven songs with layers of atmospheric synth, organ, and textured guitar.
The group's previous albums shone a light on their strength as a live act, capturing the spontaneity and sonic stomp of a band of hardtouring road warriors, while ‘Come Morning’ sketches a markedly different picture, showcasing the introspection and clarity that comes with a long period of rest.
The album has been winning acclaim from the likes of MOJO Magazine, Guitarist, Maverick Magazine, Americana UK and many more, plus radio support from BBC Radio 2.
EGX RETURNS WITH A
Thousands of gamers descended onto London's ExCel on the last weekend of September, as the industry came together for one of, if not the biggest gaming shows in the country, EGX.
Returning to close to full strength following a lackluster first outing since the pandemic, the halls were heaving on the Saturday, however with a lack of big AAA titles to draw the masses, it felt rather empty.
Gone were the massive areas for Playstation, XBox and Nintendo
of yesteryear, replaced with a few bigger titles, House Flipper 2, Sonic Frontiers and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Beta, taking up the largest amount of floorspace.
A welcome expansion was to the indie game area, along with a large selection of VR titles, were some fantastic standout games including Wired Productions' Gori, Cuddly Carnage, a wonderfully bright and smooth 'skate-and-slash' playing as a murder-kitty on a death-dealing hoverboard.

BLACK HIST M NTH An EXCLUSIVE Look At BHM With Its Creator, Akyaaba Addai-SeboTHE ORIGINS READING FOR BHM SHARING JOURNEYS INFLUENTIAL YEAR AHEAD
FROM JUST A THOUGHT TO A PHENOMENON
of people now celebrate Black History Month during the month of October in the UK, looking both back at the past, celebrating those who have come before us, and also looking to the future, at the next generation and the inspirational people leading the way forward.
None of this would be possible every year however, had it not been for the work of
Millionsa dedicated team, working towards a common goal initiated by one young gentleman by the name of Akyaaba Addai-Sebo.
Born on October 10th 1950 in the capital of the Ashanti region, Kumasi, in the centre of Ghana, Akyaaba grew up and went to school in Kumasi, before attending Adisadel College, an Anglican Mission Secondary Boarding School.
“I didn’t have anything really in mind as to what I wanted to be back then,” explained Addai-Sebo. “It was more I wanted to do something in relation to Humanitarian work, settling conflicts, something like that. I was always very interested in peaceful coexistence and equal opportunities for all.
“I’ve always been against any form of discrimination, as I saw the energy and significance of people living multiculturally, we had people from all across Ghana and Africa living around us.
“That has shaped my thinking and understanding of the world we live in. I grew up during the Young Pioneer Movement, started by Kwame Nkrumah to imbue the youth and children with a sense of patriotism, love of country, and protection of public property, being the guardians of the society.”
When the military took over in 1972, Akyaaba tried to resist,
and with the Pan African Youth Movement tried to seize a local radio station to broadcast their message. “It got to a point that was uncomfortable and I had to leave the country.”
“I went to the US and got involved in Politics in Washington DC, and fell into the hands of CLR James, who took me in, brought me up, and educated me.”
Akyaaba spoke with Chancellor Williams, Yosef Ben-Jochannan, John Henrik Clarke, Kwame Ture, and Jewell Mazique among others while in the US, and saw the annual observance of ‘Negro History Week’ become ‘Black History Month’, and the renewed sense of pride in African-American children that occurred as a result.
Many years later, after seeking refuge in the UK from political persecution in his home country of Ghana once again, this time during the regime of Jerry John Rawlings in 1984, Akyaaba settled in London with his wife, Nana Akua Owusu.
Once again CLR James looked after the young refugee, who absorbed everything about Community Activism.
Having taken a position as coordinator of special projects at the Greater London Council, and Chairman of the African Refugees Housing Action Group, Akyaaba was at the forefront of
the campaigns against institutional racism in the UK and the apartheid regimes in Southern Africa.
“A colleague of mine, Elizabeth, came to work one morning in early 1986, and was downcast and almost crying, she revealed to me that as she was putting her seven year old son to bed, he had asked her: “Mom, why can’t I be white?”. That really debilitated her, as she had purposefully named him Marcus, after Marcus Mosiah Garvey, and she felt she had failed him.
“I told her that that wasn’t true, and it was the institutions that had failed her son. That sent me thinking, and I observed children and schoolchildren and noticed a very serious identify crisis where people didn’t want to associate themselves with Africa, to the point of even trying to act like their AfroCaribbean colleagues.”
“Something had to be done to let the young ones know of the contributions of Africans and those of African descent to the UK and Europe from antiquity to the present was very very important.
“This wasn’t just for the black children either, it was to inform everyone of the truth of the history that curriculum wasn’t teaching to them, and that our presence shouldn’t be a nuisance to them as we are and have been contributing to the economy.”

Akywaaba got a lot of support from the leadership of the GLC and ILEA and from Mr. Ansel Wong, Head of the Ethnic Minorities Unit and the leader of GLC, Mr. Ken Livingstone.
They took over the Royal Albert Hall for about a week, and invited community personalities including Sally Mugabe, Graca Machel, Winnie Mandela, Nina Simone, Angela Davis, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Max Roach, Hugh Masakela, John Henrik Clarke, and many more to inspire and educate an Albert Hall full of schoolchildren.
“I drafted a declaration which got assent from the GLC, as well as cross-party support, stating that there should be a legacy heritage project as part of the African Jubilee Year that the month of October should be declared as Black History Month.”
Addai-Sebo has noted previously: "Although I initiated the idea, making Black History Month was a collective effort, and it could not have been achieved without the London Strategic Policy Unit, an organisation
established after the Thatcher government abolished the GLC in 1986.
“There were many people involved, and it is difficult to mention everyone, but I can mention Ansel Wong, Linda Bellos, Ken Livingstone, Paul Boateng, Margaret Hodge, Anne Matthews, Narendra Makenji, Peter Brayshaw, Drew Stevenson, Bernard Wiltshire, Herman Ouseley, Ken Martindale, Vitus Evans, Chris Boothman, Lord Gifford, Bernie Grant, Shirley Andrews and Edward Oteng among the many. We managed to make this an all party affair.”
On June 30th, this was declared at the Westminster Central Hall, at which the Guest of Honour was to be President Mugabe, who was unfortunately unable to attend, but he sent his wife, Sally Mugabe to represent him.
“It was a magnificent occasion,” he remembered fondly, “the spirit there was incredible.
That October, in 1987, they brought over Dr Maulana Karenga from the US, the founder of
Kwanzaa to launch Black History Month in the UK.
“We chose October specifically because of the significance of the Autumn Equinox to Africans, it’s a time of introspection, self examination of the state and kingdom, all the quarrels are sorted to produce a stronger and united kingdom.”
Since then, Black History Month has grown and grown. For a while Akyaaba thought that there should be a governing body to lead Black History Month, but while putting a proposal through, something came to him telling him that it would destroy the concept, conflict and ego would cause issues and it would end up destroying everything.
“So I decided to let the community take the idea and run with it, and now we have what we have today. The Army, the Navy, the RAF, the schools, hospitals, all institutions of state now celebrate it.
“I am very very happy and proud to see how it has evolved. It’s only recently that I’ve even granted
interviews about my involvement in its creation.”
“Black History Month matters like Black Lives Matter, simply because Black History is the history of humanity, so it should concern everybody, particularly the younger ones. We have a saying that no one teaches a child about God, so the sense of right and good in a child.
“The youth are tomorrow, and it’s your consciousness about our one humanity that is critical to the future safety and security of the nation that you live in.”
“If you look at Autumn, and you go into the countryside, you see the enchantment of the trees in the canopy, multicolour enchantment , the beautiful array of diversity. That is who we are as people.
“It was a certain generation that divided the world based on colour. You cannot crush a caterpillar, yet be astounded by the beauty of a butterfly. We must become one together.”

The Theme For BHM UK 2022 Is 'Sharing Journeys'
BLACK HISTORY MONTH (BHM) UK is a time to celebrate and remember African and Caribbean heritage peoples' achievements and contributions to the British economy, culture, and history.
It's a chance to tell the stories of those less well-known Black Britons who we will forget if we don't showcase them.
Since the 1990s, the significance of Black History Month has gradually increased throughout Europe and it is now observed in Ireland the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and Italy in February.
When Black History Month UK started in the UK, there was a big emphasis on African American history. Over time the
focus has moved to celebrating and recognising Black British history and key Black figures in the UK.
Some individuals with a lineage beginning long before the Windrush generation and others with distinct and very different cultures rooted in the African and Caribbean continents.
Change is happening but there is still a long way to go. As stories enter the mainstream and UK Black history, is rightly seen as just British history. It must be ensure that the stories of lesser-known Black Britons are not forgotten and that the authenticity of those stories is not lost, and are told in their own words.
“UK Black history is a series
of missing chapters from British history”, said David Olusoga, historian, and we must be involved in the telling of these stories. Black History Month exists to tell these stories.
It’s a chance to shine a light on individuals who are not featured in the mainstream and whose contributions would be forgotten.
It's a time to celebrate those who are making history now and recognise the achievements of African and Caribbean heritage people's role in helping to shape UK culture, history, and economic development.

Research by the National Literacy Trust found that 40% of children and young people from ethnic minority backgrounds say that they don’t see themselves in what they read.

Outstanding Americans Educated At Historically Black Colleges And Unis
U.S. HIGHER education institutions offer students strong academics and graduates valuable degrees. And historically Black colleges and universities are among the high-quality options potential applicants do well to consider.
The U.S. Department of Education recognizes 101 schools as historically Black colleges and universities. They were all founded before 1964, when the Civil Rights Act made
discrimination illegal, primarily in order to educate African American students, who were often not welcome at white universities.
These schools, also known as HBCUs, constitute only 3% of higher-education institutions in the United States, yet they educate 10% of all Black college students. (Students of all races can attend HBCUs.)
Over recent decades, HBCU grads have made lasting marks on every aspect of society. Katherine
Chart Show Presenter Hailing Influential Year For Afrobeats
Once upon a time, it might have been surprising to see the West African genre's breakout star chatting to British pop royalty.
But Eddie Kadi, who's been hosting the UK's first Official Afrobeats Chart Show for the past 12 months, isn't so shocked.
"It's a year that's been really significant for Afrobeats," he says.
"The growth and sound that's penetrated around the world."
The genre - a mix of African and Western influences - has seen a
massive rise in popularity over recent years, with songs regularly crossing over into the mainstream.
Burna Boy and Wizkid, two of Nigeria's biggest stars, have headlined some of the world's major music festivals and both took home Grammys in 2021. And some of the premier names in music, like Beyonce and Drake, have also featured Afrobeats artists on their albums.
Burna Boy, who has dominated the Afrobeats chart since it launched, has been its poster child. His recent hit Last Last
spent a whopping 13 consecutive weeks at number one - the longest time permitted before a track is retired from the top spot. He's also worked with top names including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Jorja Smith and rapper Dave.
Eddie says: "Everyone has seen Burna's rise transcend the West African Nigerian sound into the UK sound. And more importantly he's been able to just go around the world waving the flag of Afrobeats."
Last Last is among 11 tracks to have crossed over into the UK's
Johnson, the late groundbreaking NASA mathematician immortalized in the blockbuster film Hidden Figures, graduated from West Virginia State University. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris graduated from Howard University. Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (“North Carolina A&T”).
In entertainment, R&B music hit-maker and American Idol judge Lionel Richie graduated from Tuskegee University.
Spike Lee, a prolific, Oscarnominated film director whose films primarily centre on the Black American experience, graduated from Morehouse College.
Martin Luther King Jr., the Nobel Prize–winning civil rights leader, graduated from Morehouse College.
Before her eponymous talk show, Oprah Winfrey earned a degree from Tennessee State University.
Her 25-year run as talk show host cemented her reputation as tastemaker, literary critic and gifted interviewer.
Official Singles Chart Top 100 and Top 40, both peaking in the top 5. It was pipped to the overall top slot by Fireboy DML's Peru featuring Ed Sheeran, the bestperforming track based on streams and sales in the UK.
"Whether it's new or established artists breaking new barriers around the world, selling out venues, stadiums, collaborating with other artists, it's just been beautiful to see the growth," says Eddie. "Especially here in the UK where we have at least four Afrobeats songs in the official charts as well."
Eddie is preparing to celebrate the Official Afrobeats Chart Show's one-year anniversary later on BBC Radio 1Xtra. And he's hoping year two is going to be even more exciting.

Subaig Singh’s ‘Find My Way’ Ft. Surinder Rattan Hits The Air Waves
PRODUCED BY Kulbir Kandola, with lyrics by Johnny Depth and music by award winning producer Surinder Rattan ‘Find My Way’ sees Subaig Singh hitting the mainstream music industry.
The singer, actor and performer leans into a totally different sound for his new song ‘Find My Way’ keeping it all in English but with a Caribbean flavour. The video was shot in the UK in Camden Market by the young, talented and creative team Drop Monster.
‘Find My Way’ is an upbeat song with a melodious reggae style hook, the mastering is excellent, blending the one drop reggae
baseline with a dash of modern trap in the beat of the song. The song sounds fresh to the ear with a positive and soulful vibe.
Subaig revealed that the project was very personal, and attention was paid to every detail to ensure that the material was properly recorded.
‘Find My Way’ reveals yet another different side to Subaig. This is real rich-quality music.
Commenting on the track, Subaig said: “This is something you want to have in your music collection. I hope DJs appreciate the song and it hits the clubs worldwide”.

New ‘Dirty Stop Out’ Guide Unveils 1970s Nightlife On Westside And Wider City Centre
The
glitzy and not so glitzy nightlife of Westside and Birmingham’s wider city centre in the 1970s has been unveiled in a new book by rock impresario Jim Simpson.
The decade is chronicled as never before in Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1970s Birmingham, researched and written by Jim and his brother Ron Simpson. The brothers have been at the very heart of the city’s music scene since the late 1960s, with Jim helping to create success for
Black Sabbath, one of the city’s biggest cultural exports of the era.
Jim was Black Sabbath’s first manager and took them to the top of the charts, going on to manage other successful bands. He now runs Henry's Blueshouse music club and the Big Bear record label, as well as organising the annual Birmingham, Sandwell and Westside Jazz Festival.
The book tells the stories behind former Westside clubs like the Rum Runner, which sat on Broad Street from 1964 to
1987, before closing to make way for the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Also featured is the Opposite Lock nightclub, which became Bobby Brown’s, and Barberella’s - once located at 41 Cumberland Street, off Broad Street.
The clubs were the breeding ground for many of the then emerging city bands and, as well as Black Sabbath, the book reveals early stories about Duran Duran, UB40, Dexys Midnight Runners and many others.
The
electrifying Lil Nas X kicks off global touring debut in Detroit on Long Live Montero Tour.
Produced by Live Nation, the 21date North America run continues with stops in Chicago, Toronto, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and more before wrapping up on October 23rd at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
The tour will proceed with the European and Australian legs on November 8th in Amsterdam and concludes on January 4th in Sydney.
For his very first tour, Lil Nas X and his team set out to create a theatrical show unlike any other –a real modern pop musical.
The three-act set (Rebirth, Transformation and Becoming) represents the different stages throughout Lil Nas X’s journey from his childhood, to releasing his very first song, and all the way through reaching his current status as a creative and fearless cultural icon – narrated by a figure dubbed
The Wizard of Naz. Fans were captivated watching the story unfold in front of gorgeous, whimsical visuals and
alongside stunning dance numbers choreographed by Sean Bankhead. Creative direction for the tour is by Hodo Musa and Saul Levitz.

Minneapolisbased producer and songwriter
Nathan Stocker is Brotherkenzie - today, he releases LP Nathan via Thirty Tigers, a catharsis in the form of 12 tracks about fighting your demons, leaning into heathen ideals and self-loathing.
Nathan’s guiding light lies in Stocker’s viciously honest narrative told through audacious confessional lyrics backed by fuzzed-out guitars, feathery piano chords, making him the new face of melancholic indie-pop.
"Clash called the album a “sprawling manifestation of self, putting into disheveled words all the destructive, cyclic, shameful and selfish fragments of his behaviour [with] twangling guitars, grand production."
The album release follows singles ‘Get On It,’ ‘Die Broke,’ ‘Bike No More and ‘Overgiver’ and was written between March and November 2020. It was recorded and produced with friend and Baby Boys collaborator Caleb Hinz in Minneapolis, MN.
This marks Stocker’s third full length release as Brotherkenzie and follows 2020’s ‘Big What.’ This autumn, Stocker will embark on a string of dates in the midwest in September as Brotherkenzie with more to be announced.

ŠKODA Design has reinterpreted the concept of the ŠKODA 1100 OHC from 1957 and is presenting the computer-animated design model VISION GT, a study of an all-electric racing car made in Mladá Boleslav.
Alongside its forebear, the design concept is currently on show in the ‘Design and Transformation’ exhibition.
Hosted in Brussels, the display is part of the supporting programme of the Czech Republic’s EU Presidency.
The computer-animated design model ŠKODA VISION GT is among the highlights of the ‘Design and Transformation’ exhibition in Brussels.
To mark the Czech Republic’s EU presidency, a number of Czech companies are presenting products and designs from 1990 to 2020 at this event.
In creating the VISION GT model, the ŠKODA Design team found inspiration in the
ŠKODA 1100 OHC from 1957. The automaker is using the concept to send a clear signal for sustainable sportiness and emotion in the digital age.
The digital VISION GT ties in with the tradition of the ‘Icons Get a Makeover’ series, which includes iconic models from the company’s history, such as the 130 RS, FELICIA and RAPID MONTE CARLO.
Just like the 1100 OHC, the VISION GT is a red, opentop racing car. However, it is designed as a single-seater, with the driver sitting in the centre of the vehicle.
Above the futuristic carbon steering wheel, which is flattened at the top and bottom, there is a flat on-screen bar that doubles as a windshield. Important information is projected directly onto the driver’s helmet visor, similar to a head-up display.
An active cockpit with a flexibly suspended seat is designed to optimally compensate for g-forces.
Parents Urged To Help Clean Up The School Run
ŠKODA VISION GT: a digital design model of an emotive, all-electric racing car
AS CHILDREN returned to school, The Electric Car Scheme has been urging parents to help clean up the school run.
Research shows children are some of the worst-hit by the exhaust fumes of idling and mobile cars, as they are closer to the ground.
Air pollution is the number one environmental health risk in the UK, increasing rates of asthma and other health problems.
Emerging evidence suggests it can also harm the developing brains of children, hindering their academic progress. Luckily the UK is seeing some improvement in this space, but it could still go further and faster
Unfortunately, buying a clean emissions-free electric car is still too expensive for many families. But a littleknown government subsidy could see them lease one through their employer for as little as £250 a month, with savings of 30-60% compared to a personal lease.
This works through a “salary sacrifice” scheme, similar to the popular cycle-to-work programme, at zero cost to the employer. Employees of a business who signs up can spend a portion of their pretax income on the lease of
an electric car, netting them savings of between 30 and 60 per cent, while The Electric Car Scheme handles all the fiddly bits for the business itself.
Co-Founder and CEO of the Scheme, Thom Groot, says: “We know that parents want to do the right thing for their children, the environment, and the quest to Net Zero.
Research suggests harmful air pollution does not just hurt the environment, but also our children.
“Too much of this pollution is coming from fossil-fuel powered cars, which we would like to help change. For many parents picking up or dropping off their child at school in a car is the only realistic option, particularly if they are juggling after-school activities, other childcare, or work commitments.”
“At The Electric Car Scheme, we are dedicated to making it a ‘no brainer’ decision for everyone to switch to driving clean emissions-free electric cars, at an affordable cost. We hope that parents and local businesses – particularly those around schools –consider looking into whether they might be able to switch to an electric car through salary sacrifice.”

Star dogs must be within easy commuting distance of the city-centre based theatre and not be afraid of stepping into the spotlight, onstage ‘accidents’ are preferably avoidable.
The paw-fect pup will be required to take to the stage for 2-3 performances per week and paid £30 per show plus travel expenses. Plenty of pre-show fuss is guaranteed with inevitable treats thrown in. The role of Cracker the dog in Nativity! The Musical requires a smallmedium sized dog who can easily be handled and picked up by children.
Royal Shakespeare Company Marks The Death Of Her Majesty The Queen
Catherine Mallyon (RSC Executive Director) and Erica Whyman (RSC Acting Artistic Director) said:
“We are deeply saddened at the news of the Queen’s death, and our thoughts are with her family, and particularly our President, HRH The Prince of Wales.
"Her Majesty the Queen has been Patron of the Royal Shakespeare Company since 1961, when the Company was created.
“Her Majesty last visited us in Stratford-upon-Avon on 4 March 2011 to open formally the transformed Royal Shakespeare Theatre. This was a memorable day in the history of the RSC where she met and talked with members of the Company and those involved in the redevelopment and transformation of the theatre.
“It was a great pleasure for us to rehearse with HRH The Prince of Wales in preparation for his poetic tribute to his mother on
her 90th birthday in 2016. We were honoured to be part of such a special moment.
“Shakespeare’s Henry VIII contains a prophecy by Archbishop Cranmer about the baby princess Elizabeth I: She shall be, to the happiness of England,
An aged princess; many days shall see her, And yet no day without a deed to crown it.
“Translated to our times, Elizabeth II sought the happiness of England with her steadfast service, certainly lived many days, and did a great deed on every one.”
This evening’s (8 September) RSC performances of Richard III in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Matilda The Musical at the Cambridge Theatre, London are going ahead. Ticket holders will be contacted via email in the case of changes or cancellations for future performances, and updates will appear on the RSC website, rsc.org.uk.

Faith Leaders Pay Tribute To Queen Elizabeth II
THE GREATEST tribute to the Queen has been the way her death has brought people together, a Jewish community leader has said. Rabbi Yossi Jacobs was one of more than a dozen representatives of different faiths who came together at the city's peace garden to mark the Queen's life.
They sowed seeds in her memory. The Chief Minister of Birmingham Hebrew Congregation said that people of all ages and backgrounds got together to share their grief.
Mohammed Afzal, representing Muslims on the Birmingham Faith Leaders Group, described the Queen as a "beacon of stability" and said her death had shocked the community.
"She served all her life for this country, which is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-faith," he said. "We prayed for her and will also remember her this week."
MIDLANDS MOSQUE HOPING TO RAISE THOUSANDS FOR PAKISTAN FLOOD VICTIMS
Funding Success To Strengthen Community Engagement
THE UNIVERSITY of Wolverhampton’s Centre for Sikh and Panjabi Studies (CSPS) has secured £35,000 to deliver three externally funded projects which highlight the continued success of the Centre in addressing issues in local and regional faith communities.
The Director of CSPS, Dr Opinderjit Kaur Takhar, has brought together a team of academics from the University’s School of Society and Community, School of Public Health, School of Allied Health and the Wolverhampton School of Art to deliver the projects which are focused around healthy lifestyles and organ donation.
A
Midlands mosque is hoping to raise £10,000 to help people affected by flooding in Pakistan.
Flash floods and landslides along the Indus and Kabul
rivers have left more than 1,100 dead, 1,600 injured and millions homeless. As well as selling food to raise money, Worcester Mosque is appealing for cash donations.
Haris Saleem, from Worcester
Muslim Welfare Association, said it has an obligation to help. Charities and mosques across the West Midlands have launched appeals to support those affected by the flooding.
He said: "We have done in
the past as well, whenever an earthquake happened or flood happened, we raised money. This time again Pakistan is suffering with the flood."
One of the projects concentrates on delivering and disseminating a Healthy Lifestyles Toolkit to the Sikh community in Birmingham, which has been funded by Birmingham City Council. CSPS was previously commissioned by Birmingham City Council to write the Healthy Lifestyles Toolkit, which can be found on its website. Another, also funded by Birmingham City Council, focuses on disseminating the Hindu Healthy Lifestyles Toolkit to the Hindu community in Birmingham.

A Statement From Birmingham Following The Unrest In Leicester
AS MEMBERS of Birmingham Faith Leaders’ Group – comprising of leaders from the city’s six major faith communities, who have met regularly for more than twelve years, to mould and develop mutual trust, fellowship and understanding – we share the pain and bewilderment of faith communities in Leicester following violence and unrest in parts of your city.
We stand in unity with the communities of Leicester in condemning violence in the name of one’s faith.
It is our desire in Birmingham, as we are sure it is yours in Leicester, that we move forward in harmony,
welcoming and rejoicing in the diversity of our faith communities.
Together let us relish our unity and respect, and value the various expressions of faith, recognising the wealth of service offered to the wider community through our care and support services, as well as our religious practices.
When we speak the language of faith to one another, we help to build understanding, we learn to create opportunities for forgiveness and reconciliation, and we hear and pay attention to the voices of reason and creativity, over and above those of destruction and division.
HOW THE QUEENS
BATON RELAY RECEIVED SPIRITUAL BLESSING FROM MULTI-FAITH COMMUNITIES
Ademonstration of Community Spirit in abundance was displayed as hundreds of members of the diverse communities, faith leaders and dignitaries joined together to welcome the Queens Baton Relay as it stopped at Handsworth Library and the Nishkam Organisation, before reaching Alexandra Stadium for the Opening Ceremony for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Members of the city’s Faith Leaders Group, local faith representatives, councillors, dignitaries and the community itself gathered before reciting a powerful prayer - led by Bhai Sahib, Bhai Mohinder Singh OBE KSG, Chair & Spiritual Leader of the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha and patrons of the Nishkam Civic Association.
Bhai Sahib said: “We were
pleased that Professor Geoff Thompson (Deputy Chair for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham) was able to join us. We were honoured that Professor Thompson requested that a prayer and a sacred blessing be done right here at the Gurudwara. Distinguished colleagues from the Birmingham Faith Leaders Group and other local faiths representing the super-diverse city joined us to pray for all involved in the Commonwealth Games and beyond – a truly spiritually uplifting and blessed occasion.
“A positive, long term and inspiring legacy of the Games is crucial. The dignity of difference must be celebrated, and it is a folly to ignore and neglect any person or part of Creation. We see the exclusion of the weak and disadvantaged continue, we need to stop this. We must accept that economic and social exclusion is a complete denial of human
fraternity. This can only be fought by acknowledging and upholding our responsibilities”
“For me the Games truly came alive by the Baton coming here,” Prof. Thompson said. “Having organisations like Nishkam bringing in the diversity of the community spirit I witnessed, and to bring the multi-faith interfaith spirituality, I believe gave the Games the perfect starting point by which to see 11 days of sporting festival, leave a legacy opportunity for all.
“Birmingham,” he went on, “is ‘the world in one city’ as ‘the Commonwealth visited the commonwealth of Birmingham’.
“Young people ultimately have to have hope and opportunity whatever their identity, or whatever they feel they are not getting, by way of an opportunity to realise their potential."

The Beat The Street Physical Activity Game Is Coming To Birmingham!
A POPULAR interactive game that helps whole communities get active is set to return to Birmingham!
Beat the Street was created by GP Dr William Bird to encourage people to explore their local areas and to walk, cycle and roll in a fun competition.
The game has been played by more than 1.5m people in more than 120 locations in the UK, including parts of Birmingham, including Handsworth in 2016.
This time, the areas of Bordesley Green, Small Heath, Sparkbrook and Balsall Heath East, Tyseley and Hay Mills are invited to take part in the Beat the Street game which is designed to get everyone in the community moving and making healthy lifestyle changes.
The free competition will be called “Beat the Street Brum” and aims to encourage people of all ages and abilities to ditch the car and to explore the community on foot.
Previous towns and cities that have played the game have seen notably improved levels of physical activity long-term for adults and children who have taken part.
As well as helping people get more active, Beat the Street also helps reduce congestion, improves air quality, and helps families spend time in green spaces together.
WMCA AWARDED
TO DELIVER FREE DIGITAL, GREEN AND HEALTH SKILLS BOOTCAMPS
More free training is now available to support those looking to start a new career in digital, health and green industries thanks to a Government skills grant awarded to the region.
The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has secured the further £11.25 milllion from the government’s National Skills Fund expansion to expand bootcamp delivery in key sectors of our regional economy.
The bootcamps are free of charge for learners and equip West Midlands residents with
digital skills, giving them to access roles in areas like coding, cybersecurity and digital marketing.
Online training
They support the unemployed, those seeking a career change, as well as employed people looking to gain the digital skills required to secure more responsibility or a promotion with their current employer.
Bootcamps have been successfully delivered within the West Midlands region since 2019, with over 1,000 residents achieving a positive outcome after receiving training, this
includes 50% participants from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.
Based on this success the WMCA has bolstered its bootcamp provision with more funding. This new funding will support a further 3,500 West Midlands residents to upskill and reskill in some of the regions priority sectors and key areas for growth.
Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “A key part of my mayoral mission is to help young people right across our region find routes into work as part of my 100k jobs plan.
Our bootcamps have been a very effective way of doing just that. That's why it's great news we've managed to secure this new £11.25 million funding package from the Government's National Skills Fund to expand our provision.
"With a focus on retraining and upskilling local residents in key sectors of our economy, we're well placed to bounce back post pandemic and supercharge our recovery - helping local people to access the high-quality, well-paid jobs of the future. I look forward to seeing lives changed for the better."
Clare Hatton, director of employment and skills at WMCA, said: “Bootcamps represent such an amazing opportunity for our local businesses. With unprecedented pre-pandemic growth in our economy, the West Midlands has been the place to locate and grow businesses over recent years.
“With thousands of new jobs created and companies bringing their flagship operations to the West Midlands, never has there been a more important time for us to make sure our residents have the skills they need to compete in the jobs market and ensure businesses can acquire the talent they need and that’s why I’m thrilled to announce this new funding for residents of the West Midlands.”
Health Related Behaviour Survey Results Published
THE FINDINGS of a regular survey designed to help schools, local services and other organisations improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people have been published.
The Health Related Behaviour Survey, commissioned by the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Public Health Team, asks questions about the behaviour and attitude of children and young people across a range of themes, such as physical activity, food, bullying, emotional wellbeing and safety.
Nearly 8,000 pupils from 58 schools and other settings took place this year, with age-appropriate surveys for children in Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2, secondary school and sixth form or college, and adapted questionnaires for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
Surveys were anonymous and carried out online in schools and other educational settings. Each school was subsequently provided with a bespoke report which shows how they compare to the city average.
Councillor Jasbir Jaspal, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: "Now more than ever, it is vitally important for us to understand the views and experiences of our children and young people to ensure they live healthily and can thrive.
"We encourage schools and other local services to use the results of the survey to identify need and priorities to help improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people in Wolverhampton."

£11.25M
RESPONDING TO the latest Emergency Department performance figures published by NHS England for August 2022, President of the RCEM (Royal College of Emergency Medicine), Dr Katherine Henderson said: “The data is stark. We are worried about the coming winter. These are the second worst data on record. Too many patients are waiting too long. We know long waits contribute to patient harm.
“The Prime Minister and Health Secretary must urgently bolster the social care workforce. Thousands of beds are occupied by patients who are medically fit to be discharged, but the lack of social care service means that getting patients home is a slow and complex process."
HOSPITAL INVESTS OVER
£3.5M IN PHYSIO SERVICES IN THE COMMUNITY
Work has started on a new physiotherapy department and gym in the community that will allow easier access and upgraded services for patients of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.
Following on from the official opening of clinic space, the Trust continues to expand its service offering in the community.
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) is relocating and upgrading physiotherapy services from the main hospital site on Bristol Road, to College Green, Bournville, investing over £3.5m over the next 25 years in the community site 30% of all primary care appointments are related to musculoskeletal conditions.
Investing at the new location means that a full range of stateof-the-art physiotherapy services will be easier for patients to access, and free-up space at the existing hospital location
for future redevelopment. Encompassing physiotherapy gym services and clinical rooms, as well as a dedicated paediatrics area, the new physiotherapy
space is scheduled to open in early 2023.
Nikki Mason, Head of Therapy Services at the ROH, said: “We are working with specialist healthcare contractors to bring this project to life. The new flexible location will encompass a gym and exercise space to support rehabilitation, creating a fantastic environment for patient recovery and for colleagues to work in, as well as a dedicated paediatric space to support our younger patients.”
Development Director – South at Assura, Ashley Seymour, said: “This will provide the physiotherapy team with state-of-the-art accommodation alongside the College Green Medical Practice and has the added benefit of releasing space at the hospital for further development and service expansion.”
“We bring a wealth of experience delivering firstclass healthcare facilities,” said Norberto McBride, Contract Manager at Interclass Plc. “We’re looking forward to seeing the works progress over the coming months.”
Ash Anderson, Technical Associate Project Manager at Ridge and Partners LLP, said: “This is an exciting project to be involved in and will provide much needed local facilities for the community, delivering first class healthcare. We look forward to observing the progress over the coming months.”
Relocating the services means patients can be treated in a specialist area away from the main hospital site, with parking and public transportation nearby.
Current Therapy staff from the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital will move over to the new site.
Rotary Continuing Partnership With Prostate Cancer UK
LAST YEAR, Rotary Watches partnered with Prostate Cancer UK to launch the hugely successful 1IN8 watch, a limited edition timepiece that drew attention to how 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
Now, Rotary Watches is proud to introduce the next chapter in its two year partnership with the UK’s leading men’s health charity: the Limited Edition 1IN4 watch.
1 in 4 Black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, a shockingly high number. To raise awareness that Black men face a higher risk of prostate cancer, Rotary Watches has designed the Limited Edition 1IN4 watch in collaboration with property expert, writer and TV presenter Kunle Barker.
With only 1,000 pieces made, Rotary will donate 10 percent + VAT from the sale of every 1IN4 watch to Prostate Cancer UK, which will go towards helping more Black men understand their prostate cancer risk and what they can do about it.
Kunle says, “Since my dad’s diagnosis, I no longer take my health for granted. I also now want to make more men aware of their health and risks of prostate cancer, and encourage them to see their GP if they have any worries or concerns about the disease."

THE SOCIAL MARKET Foundation (SWF) says that more needs to be done to help the 27% of the workforce who continue working despite being in persistent pain.
Not only are workers with chronic pain more likely to take sick leave, but they are also less productive when they are able to work – due to being in persistent physical pain. Studies in the US suggest this lost productivity costs the economy around 1% of GDP.
The SMF said that an awarenessraising campaign similar to ones around mental health is needed to make chronic pain in the workplace ‘a genuine priority for businesses’, backed up by measures from policymakers to better monitor chronic pain and improve treatment.
Yet chronic pain guidelines issued last year by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence led to concern from doctors that it will be harder for people to access pain management services and medications.
The SMF’s analysis of from the most recent available Health Survey for England data found that women and working class people are more likely to work through chronic pain. In order to improve the understanding of chronic pain and the response to it, the SMF recommends:
• The chronic pain module of the Health Survey for England should be re-run, especially given the impact of COVID-19 on longterm health outcomes
• The National Health Security Agency should commission or carry out research on chronic pain in the UK to understand its costs and impact
• The likely move to decommission chronic pain services should be scrutinised carefully, in case it is counterproductive.
• More support from businesses for their staff, raising the profile of chronic pain in a similar fashion as mental health in the workplace.
Aveek Bhattacharya, SMF Chief Economist, said: “We should be doing everything we can to reduce that suffering, simply because it is the right thing to do.
“It is an added bonus that we can improve people’s engagement with work and their productivity, boosting the economy at the same time. With the country facing major health and labour market challenges as we emerge out of the pandemic, it is about time that chronic pain received the attention it deserves, from the public, researchers, employers and policymakers.”
FOOTBALL FANS, IT'S TIME TO UNITE! IT'S TIME TO FINISH IT!
Cure Leukaemia is calling on the football community across the world to unite in the battle against childhood blood cancer and forget club rivalries as part of a £10million fundraising campaign launching today at
the start of Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
Every 14 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a form of blood cancer with 250,000 people currently living with blood cancer across the country.
As part of our “FINISH IT!” campaign, football fans across
the world are being encouraged to buy a £14 “virtual” seat in their brand new 250,000-seater virtual stadium.
By purchasing your seat, you will be playing your part in helping to launch a new paediatric trials network that deliver new innovative
treatments to improve outcomes for children with blood cancer like Jude. To help support the launch, Gary Lineker OBE and son George visited Great Ormond Street Hospital, where George fought his own battle with blood cancer when he was just six weeks old.
Oxley Health & Wellbeing Facility And New Homes Design Showcased To Community
THE LATEST design for the construction of an Oxley health & wellbeing facility and new homes will be shared by City of Wolverhampton Council at a public consultation on Saturday, September 24.
The Council approved the creation of a modern health & wellbeing facility and new homes on the site of the former Oxley Day Training Centre in March.
A feasibility study for the scheme on the vacant, Councilowned Probert Road site has been undertaken and feedback from stakeholders and the public at July’s community event has shaped the final design.
Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Assets and Housing, said: “This is an ambitious proposal that makes use of a brownfield site that is no longer in use.
“Following our successful community event held earlier this summer and the engagement workshop with stakeholders, we gained very useful feedback from a cross section of the community.
“The feedback received was instrumental in shaping the final design of the Oxley project as it helped identify further opportunities to benefit the community.
“The new community facility will provide invaluable health & wellbeing services for the local community and will also help deliver more and better homes in Oxley.”

FRENCH TOURISM BETTER THAN PRE-COVID, DESPITE CLIMATE WOES
Tourism came back with a vengeance to France this summer, sending revenues over pre-pandemic levels, according to government estimates released this week.
Crowds packed Paris landmarks and Riviera beaches, notably
thanks to an influx of Americans benefiting from the weak euro, but also British and other European visitors revelling in the end of pandemic restrictions.
“It’s beautiful to go again to travel,” said Serena Veronese, a tourist from Lago Maggiore in Italy soaking in the view of the
Eiffel Tower. She and her husband work for an airline and “suffered a lot” as the COVID-19 crisis grounded planes worldwide.
“Now people have to go traveling again, they have to.”
The summer surge came despite exceptionally hot weather in France and around Europe,
record drought and devastating wildfires. The season saw chaos in European airports and rising prices that hit tourists, too.
Spending on tourism in France reached pre-pandemic levels and has even surpassed it in some areas, Tourism Minister Olivia Gregoire told reporters.
According to the government’s preliminary estimates, tourism spending in France this summer was 10% higher than 2019, based on data from bank card use and lodging and restaurant revenues.
Grenadian To Head Global Flight Against Climate Change
WITH ONLY months to usher in the next round of climate negotiations at COP27 in Egypt, former Grenada cabinet minister Simon Stiell has been appointed the new Executive Secretary of the Germany-based United Nations Climate Change Secretariat.
From March 2013 to June 2022, Stiell, an engineer, served as a senior minister in the Government of Grenada, holding the portfolios of Minister for Climate Resilience and the Environment for five years. He also served as Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Minister of State with responsibility for Human Resource Development and the Environment, and as a junior minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
It is now 18 years since Grenada was on the frontline of climate change when Hurricane Ivan scoured the island almost to its roots. Stiell is among the latest in a cadre of Caribbean diplomats “punching above the region’s weight” on environmental issues at the UN.
He has often exhorted the world’s largest polluters to set more ambitious climate goals and to deliver the finance they have long promised to affected developing countries, including small island developing states. Prior to his return to Grenada,
Brazil’s Inbound Travel
year has marked the resumption of tourism in Brazil, and the movement of the country’s international air network is one of the main metrics that prove the recovery of the sector.
This
On the rise each month, Brazilian air connectivity with the world operates at more than 80 percent of the capacity observed in 2019. Argentina, the United States and Portugal were the countries with the most flights to Brazil in the first half, with 10,800 arrivals in all.
The United States appears in first place among long-haul destinations,
with 3,972 flights, followed by Portugal, with 2,661. Argentina, a neighbouring country, sent 4,250 flights to Brazil, leading the overall connectivity ranking with the country.
And the five most booked Brazilian destinations by international tourists, according to Booking.com, based on a survey by the site, during the month of July were: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Foz do Iguaçu (the main base for visiting the Iguaçu Falls), Salvador (the capital of the state of Bahia) and Fortaleza (a popular beach city).
Another major draw, held September
2-11, was the Rock in Rio music festival. It’s estimated that 10,000 international travellers from 21 different countries attended the show. “This demonstrates the strength that major events, such as Rock in Rio, have to promote international tourism,” said Embratur president Silvio Nascimento.
As a whole, according to the Federation of Trade in Goods, Services, and Tourism in São Paulo, the tourism sector earned 100 billion Brazilian real (approximately $19.4 billion) in the first half of 2022. The amount is 33 percent higher than the result in the same month in 2021.

The
Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) has a new chair.
Cayman Islands Minister for Tourism and Transport Kenneth Bryan was elected as the new chairman of the inter-governmental body this week at the organization’s Annual General.
Meeting in the Cayman Islands. Minister Bryan, a former television journalist and youth organizer, assumes the chairmanship of the CTO Council of Ministers for the next two years and succeeds outgoing chairman, Senator Lisa Cummins, Barbados’ Minister of Tourism and International Transport.
Bryan said: “I’m honoured and excited to take over the mantle of the CTO chair because I recognize, like all other members, that there needs to be some reform and restructuring, particularly with respect to air travel and marketing.
So I’m ready to take on the challenge, in collaboration with my regional colleagues, of finding a new way forward, as well as addressing any issues we have within the organization to improve efficiency and focus.”
Bryan praised Minister
Cummins for overseeing the CTO’s chairmanship during the “difficult period” of the COVID-19 pandemic: “Thank you to former chairman Lisa Cummins for the hard work that she did over a very difficult period, particularly in managing a very important organization when the whole region was dealing with difficulties in tourism, brought on by the pandemic.”
Rosa Harris, the Cayman Islands’ experienced and accomplished Director of Tourism, will serve as chairman of the CTO Board of Directors for the next two years.
Harris described the Cayman Islands’ role as a serious responsibility especially with the need to raise the visibility of the region as it recovers from the impact of the pandemic.
Cooperation, sharing information and networking will be key, she explained: “Being able to reach out, listen, learn, understand the uniqueness of the Caribbean nations … that’s a strength that we bring as the Cayman Islands being the chair of the CTO. We are going to ensure that we represent, and every voice in our membership will be heard.”

India Tycoon In Hostile Bid For News Channel NDTV
ASIA'S RICHEST man Gautam Adani is seeking to take over Indian news broadcaster New Delhi Television, which is widely known as NDTV. It comes as the multi-billionaire moved to take a majority stake in the firm.
NDTV says that this was executed without any input from, conversation with, or consent of the company's founders. Mr Adani's bid for NDTV, which operates TV channels and websites, has drawn attention because he is seen as being close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a statement, AMG Media Networks Limited (AMNL), a unit of Adani Group, said it planned to buy RRPR Holding - which owns 29.18% of NDTV - for an undisclosed amount. AMNL added that it would also launch an open offer for another 26% of NDTV, which if successful would give it a majority stake of the news outlet.
AMNL chief executive Sanjay Pugalia said: “The takeover was a significant milestone in the journey of AMNL's goal to pave the path of new age media across platforms. AMNL seeks to empower Indian citizens, consumers and those interested in India, with information and knowledge."
He added: "With its leading position in news and its strong and diverse reach across genres and geographies, NDTV is the most suitable broadcast and digital platform to deliver on our vision." NDTV said it was only made aware of Mr Adani's intentions days ago.
In a statement, the company said: "NDTV has never compromised on the heart of its operationsits journalism. We continue to proudly stand by that journalism." The group operates three national channels and news websites.
Adani Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mr Adani has a net worth of $135bn (£114.3bn) and is the richest man in Asia, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
U.S. FEED THE FUTURE PROGRAMME EXPANDS IN 8 AFRICAN COUNTRIES
T&T marking 60 year Anniversary of Independence
WITH JAMAICA celebrating its Diamond Jubilee of Independence from Britain, Trinidad and Tobago is hot on its heels as the twinisland republic marks its own 60th anniversary of independence (August 31) with an extensive calendar of events in honour of the occasion set; including the production of a commemorative stamp and coin, concerts and exhibitions, a steel pan parade, and even a television series that explores the country's pre- and post-independence journey.
Justine
Konde wanted to remove pests from her small farm in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially the pesky fall armyworm that damages her crops.
She learned about effective pest control at a farmer field school organised by Feed the Future, a U.S. government programme to combat global poverty and hunger. Having learned to control pests and preserve fertilizer, Konde increased the size of her farm from .4 hectare to 6.9 hectares.
The school has worked with 6,000 farmers in the DRC since 2021. Instructors work with community leaders such as village chiefs, who then encourage local farmers to
participate.
“My role is now to spread the information among other farmers in my village,” she said, “to unite us in knowledge.”
Feed the Future, an interagency initiative led by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), recently added the DRC and seven other African countries to its list of “target countries” in which the U.S. takes a coordinated approach to address the root causes of poverty, hunger and malnutrition.
In addition to the DRC, the other nations recently added to the list are Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.
“The United States is there for African countries in this
unprecedented crisis, because that’s what partners do for each other,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during an August 8 speech in South Africa.
Feed the Future works with local governments and agricultural organizations to help farmers expand their output and maintain higher productivity levels.
Among the programme’s priorities are to:
• Reduce hunger among women and children.
• Build private sector partnerships.
• Expand use of technologies that benefit communities
The Feed the Future program complements the African Union’s own Comprehensive African Agricultural
Development Program, in which African governments agree to allocate at least 10% of national budgets to agriculture and rural development.
In June President Biden announced $2.76 billion in U.S. funding to help protect the world’s most vulnerable populations and mitigate the impacts of growing food insecurity and malnutrition.
“Our African colleagues made clear that, beyond emergency relief, what they really want is more investment in agricultural resilience, innovation, selfsufficiency,” Blinken said. “We’re responding to those calls.”
Żabka Unveils Their New Eko Smart Shop
DURING THE Economic Forum in Karpacz, Żabka Polska presented a new kind of shop – Eko Smart, combining sustainable solutions with new technological developments. The first such shop will be opened in Poznań, with 3 more to follow.
Żabka Eko Smart continues and combines the projects that the company has been implementing since 2020, when the first shop powered by 100% green energy was launched in Warsaw. The next step was the opening of Żabka Smart in Poznań in April 2022 - a testing ground for technological
solutions facilitating the work of franchisees and their employees.
"Żabka Eko Smart is teeming with innovative technological solutions based on AI, which
cooperate and communicate with the shop assistants, and perform certain actions on site.
Running this kind of shop is highly intuitive and productive
for franchisees," said Adam Manikowski, Vice President & Managing Director.
"Żabka has had an ESG strategy for a few years already. As part of its 4th pillar, Green Planet, we focus mainly on 2 areas: decarbonisation and circularity. To decarbonise our value chain we are using e.g. green energy, green transport and innovative shop solutions cutting emissions. Equally important is working towards achieving a circular economy." said Anna Grabowska, VP of the Management Board for Consumer Strategies.
There has also been a recommendation put forward by the Criminal Bar Association for the government to consider releasing 60 “deserving” prisoners as a 60th anniversary of independence initiative, and there is talk of a beautification project for the capital city, Port of Spain. However, as with Jamaica, there were concerns about the country's priorities. As a Trinidad and Tobago Express editorial outlined, the COVID-19 pandemic is not yet in the rear-view mirror, and the threat of monkeypox is on the horizon. In addition, the public sector is in the midst of salary negotiations, the cost of living is on the rise, and crime is a serious concern.
Nevertheless, in lauding positives such as “a free public health system,” “free education for all,” “a vibrant democracy even if it is yet to achieve ¬maturity”, and “a national unity at the level of the people,” University lecturer and columnist Gabrielle Hosein has suggested there would be merit in using this auspicious anniversary as the spark for “a reignited conversation about decolonising our landscape of statues, streets and parks”:
Undoubtedly, 60 years of independence is a milestone that requires some sort of acknowledgement, but in young nations like Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, which have come through the horrors of occupation, slavery, and colonialism, and fought for their right to selfgovernance, the future that independence hoped to forge is still very much a work in progress.

Third Of Drinking Water Quality Failures In England Caused By Home Plumbing
THE ANNUAL report by the UK’s drinking water watchdog shows England’s water supplies are among the best in the worldwith 99.97% of samples collected and tested meeting the required standards.
However, the document also reveals more than 36% of water quality failures in homes stem from plumbing issues in customers’ own properties.
Poor plumbing practices and fittings are one of the main causes of drinking water quality being affected, after it has been transferred safely from water mains into people’s homes.
Now WaterSafe, the UK register for approved contractors working with drinking water, is urging homeowners and property managers to always employ someone who is officially approved to work on their plumbing system - to help keep their drinking water safe and wholesome.
HOUSING AND LAND INVESTMENT DELIVERING THOUSANDS OF NEW HOMES AND JOBS
Tensof millions of pounds invested by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) in land and regeneration schemes have seen more than 12,000 jobs created and 8,000 new homes on site, most of them on disused industrial land, figures have shown.
Since the region secured its ground-breaking Housing Deal with the Government in 2018, it has secured upwards of £600m to drive regeneration across the West Midlands with new housing and commercial schemes focussed predominantly on derelict or vacant urban sites, often referred to as brownfield land.
Despite two years of lockdowns and supply chain issues due to the Covid pandemic, figures released by the WMCA show a level of investment that has seen the region become a national leader in brownfield regeneration, using the funding to unlock wider benefits and outcomes for the West Midlands.
Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands (left) and Legal & General CEO Sir Nigel Wilson announced a partnership agreement earlier this year which saw the financial services provider committing to invest £4bn in regeneration, housing and levelling up across the West Midlands.
In addition to thousands of new homes and jobs, the region's investments have also directly led to the construction of 3.8 million sqft of new commercial floorspace.
Last year alone saw the WMCA invest more than £100m to unlock new housing, commercial and regeneration schemes across the region.
Key projects to receive WMCA investment include:
£6m for St Modwen’s regeneration of the once iconic West Works at the former MG Rover plant at Longbridge which is being transformed with 350 new homes and a million sqft business park
Nearly £4m to pave the way for Lovells to build 234 homes on the site of an old foundry in Fountain Lane, Oldbury
£1.5m for the Vistry Partnerships transformation of the former Harvestime bread factory in Walsall into a new 88 homes community
Completion of the 151 home Saints Quarter development by Lovells on derelict land in Steelhouse Lane, Wolverhampton
The figures come as Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands and chair of the WMCA leads a West Midlands delegation at the London Real Estate Forum tomorrow.
The Forum brings together leaders from industry, the public sector, government and the investment and business communities to drive sustainable investment and development in cities.
The Mayor said: “As we bounce back from Covid and seek to supercharge our recovery, a key mission for our region is to meet the demand from local residents for new, affordable housing as well as for modern commercial premises for local firms to move into and expand from.
“We have set ourselves the target of building 215,000 new homes across the West Midlands by 2031 and we are also encouraging green, innovative industries to set up here to help attract the high quality, well-paid jobs of the future.

Puerto Rico House Prices Sees Suprise Fall
PUERTO RICO’S housing market continues its erratic house price movements. The seasonallyadjusted purchase-only house price index fell sharply by 10.95% in Q2 2022 from a year earlier, a surprise turnaround from the y-o-y increase of 13.65% in Q2 2021, using inflation-adjusted figures. Quarter-on-quarter, house prices dropped 5.47% during the latest quarter.
The housing market there has suffered tremendously for most of the decade. The island has experienced a prolonged economic crisis, massive debt, high unemployment and continuing population loss. With US$70 billion in debt and US$50 billion in pension liabilities, Puerto Rico's bankruptcy filing in May 2017 was the biggest in the history of the United States.
Then in recent years, the housing market showed some signs of recovery, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. During 2021, the total number of housing units sold surged 30.2% y-o-y to 13,289, following an 8.3% fall in 2020.
STAMP DUTY
CUT SET TO AID HOUSE BUYERS
New Law May Force Landlords To Pass On £400 Rebate
Landlords will be forced through legislation to pass on the £400 energy rebate to tenants with all-inclusive bills, the government says.
The
government has announced a cut to stamp duty, the tax paid when people buy a property in England and Northern Ireland. The threshold at which the tax falls due has been raised to £250,000 from its current £125,000 level.
Meanwhile the threshold for firsttime buyers has been increased from £300,000 to £425,000. The changes should remove 200,000 people from having to pay stamp duty, Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng said.
He also increased the value of the property on which first-time
buyers can claim stamp duty relief from £500,000 to £625,000.
A buyer splashing out £500,000 on a home will now be charged £12,500 rather than the previous £15,000.
As he presented his minibudget, Mr Kwarteng told the Commons:"Home ownership is the most common route for people to own an asset, giving them a stake in the success of our economy and society. This is a permanent cut to stamp duty."
Different rates apply in Scotland under the Land and Buildings Transaction Tax, and in Wales with the Land Transaction Tax.
Under the changes announced by the chancellor, anyone spending £250,000 on a property in England or Northern Ireland will avoid £2,500 in stamp duty charges as it was previously charged at 2% between £125,000 and £250,000.
Anyone other than first-time buyers spending £300,000 will now be charged £2,500, rather than the previous £5,000. However, some first-time buyers said the increase in the stamp duty threshold would not help.
London estate agent Jeremy Leaf said: "The stamp duty cut should encourage those at the first rung of the housing ladder to take
the plunge. He said that would be good not just for the market but for job and social mobility across the board, as well as the wider economy.
But rising interest rates, which will mean more costly mortgages, are set to weigh on the housing market, said Tom Bill, head of UK residential research at Knight Frank.
"Many buyers will find the impact of rising mortgage rates soon eclipses the benefit of a stamp duty cut, which will keep firm downwards pressure on prices next year."
Charities had raised concerns that tenants whose bills are included in their rent could miss out because the rebate is paid to their landlord. But a body representing landlords said plans for legislation demonised them.
The government confirmed legislation would be introduced to make sure landlords pass on the discount as it announced its energy support for businesses. It had previously said it expected landlords to pass on the rebate but had not said there would be legislation to enforce this. The government has announced a package of measures to help households with the rising cost of living, including a £400 discount on energy bills. The money will be paid in six instalments, with a discount of £66 applied to energy bills in October and November, and £67 a month from December to March 2023.
How the money is received will depend on how you pay your bill. However, for tenants whose energy bills are included in their rent, their landlord would receive the discount as they are the bill payer.
Charities, including Shelter and Citizens Advice, had previously raised concerns some landlords would not pass on the support if there was no legal obligation to do so. Some tenants also said they were worried their landlord would increase their rent if they asked for the discount to be passed on.
Housing charity Shelter said it was "absolutely right" the energy rebate was passed on to tenants. Chief executive Polly Neate said: "It's not fair for struggling renters to be left at the mercy of their landlords for this much needed help when so many are having to count every penny this autumn."

WARWICKSHIRE LAUNCH
NEW TALENT ID PROCESS
Warwickshire County Cricket Club has launched a new talent identification process to improve accessibility for aspiring young cricketers who want to join the county’s talent
pathway.
As from this month, the Club will accept video footage online to give every aspiring cricketer the opportunity to showcase their talent. This will be open for boys aged between under-13 to under18s in the first instance with a
desire to widen the process to all boys and girls in due course.
Previously, only local clubs, schools and other cricketing organisations have been able to nominate players, but this process will open more opportunities for local talent to be identified and allow increased time for coaches to make informed decisions, in an attempt to remove bias. The decision follows PhD research that was part-funded by the Club to identify how errors, bias and a lack of objectivity can impact selection decisions.
Paul Greetham, High Performance Manager, said: “This new ID process is the culmination of a lot of hard work and we’re incredibly excited to launch and share with the local community.
“By attempting to remove
bias, all aspiring professional cricketers now have the opportunity to showcase their talent in a process that is fair and neutral. We welcome all applicants who fit the criteria and strongly advise them to watch the tutorial videos before sharing.”
The nomination process will be open to anyone who matches the entry criteria with details on how to apply available via the tutorial video. Successful players (both male and female) will be selected for a five or six session programme where coaches will have ample time to assess players’ ability and developmental needs.
The process for the Under 10s, 11s and 12 boys and the women’s pathway will remain the same as previous years and information has already been relayed to the recreational game.

SRI LANKA BEAT PAKISTAN TO WIN SIXTH ASIA CUP TITLE
Sri Lanka scored 1706 off their 20 overs, set up by Bhanuka Rajapaksa's unbeaten 71 from 45 balls.
Mohammad Rizwan scored 55 in Pakistan's reply but Pramod Madushan took 4-34 to end their hopes.
The win marks a big turnaround for Sri Lanka, coached by former England coach Chris Silverwood, after they lost their opening game to Afghanistan. Victory looked unlikely when Sri Lanka slipped to 58-5, before Rajapaksa and Wanindu Hasaranga came together.
They added 58 for the sixth wicket as Hasaranga scored 36 from 21 balls to steer them to a challenging total. Fast bowler Haris Rauf led Pakistan's bowling attack with 3-29.
Sri Lanka's bowlers took wickets regularly throughout
Pakistan's chase to restrict their scoring, despite Rizwan's efforts at the top of the order.
Seamer Madushan took three top-order wickets quickly, while leg-spinner Hasaranga capped a fine all-round performance with figures of 3-27.
"There was always confidence that the team had talent, we just needed a method," said Silverwood. "We worked hard and the results are showing. Our young seam attack was superb, but it was a team effort."
Only India have won more Asia Cup titles than Sri Lanka, with seven victories. Pre-tournament favourites India failed to reach the final following defeats by Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the Super Four stage.
PCB Announce The Death Of Former International Umpire Asad Rauf
It was recently announced that former international umpire Asad Rauf has died after a cardiac arrest in Pakistan. He first officiated in a one-day international in 2000, and was a member of the International Cricket Council's elite panel between 2006 and 2013.
Rauf officiated in 64 Test matches - 49 as an on-field umpire - plus 139 ODIs and 28 Twenty20 internationals.
Pakistan Cricket Board chair, Ramiz Raja, said: "Saddened to hear about the passing of Asad Rauf."
"Not only was he a good umpire but also had a wicked sense of humour. He always put a smile on my face and will continue to do so whenever I think about him."

JAMAICA SET TO TAP INTO INTERNATIONAL GOLF MARKET
Jamaican
Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, has stated that golf can provide massive opportunities to bolster the nation as it rebounds from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The global tourism market, where people take trips with the main purpose of playing the sport, is valued at over US$17 billion, according to the International Association of Golfing Tour Operators. In addition, an estimated 56 million people play golf worldwide, of whom 26.7
million are in the United States alone, which is the leading market in terms of the sport contributing over US$60 billion to the nation’s economy.
The minister indicated that golf is part of the higher value offerings of the industry’s experience, adding that the sport can attract visitors to the island to boost the tourism industry and economy. He also noted that Jamaica was once a renowned golfing destination globally and is steadily being re-established.
“We want to recover back with golf; and so we welcome you, travel advisors, for golfing,” he said. “You have flown all the way from the different parts of the United States to be here to start that process of ensuring that recovery is happening.”
Mr Bartlett added: “We are very happy, in Jamaica, for the partnership we have had with you over the period and for the confidence that you continue to repose in us.”
Father And Son Make Football History In Scottish League 1
A FATHER AND SON made football history during a recent Queen of the South Scottish League 1 match.
Wullie and Lewis Gibson were on the pitch at the same time in the 4-1 triumph over FC Edinburgh. The Dumfries club said it believed it was the first time it had happened in senior football in Scotland.
They both played in a League Cup game at Elgin earlier this season but the 17-year-old came on after his 38-year-old father had come off. Wullie is player-manager with the Palmerston Park club but has played himself sparingly so far this season.
His son was one of three teenagers promoted to the first team squad by the Doonhamers over the summer. It was in the 87th minute of the game on Saturday afternoon in Dumfries that Lewis came on as a substitute to join his father who had already
come on.
"I have been coming here since I was little and it's my first appearance here so it's good to make my debut at home," said the young winger. "It was a weird feeling, it's just a dream come true really as well to play with your dad - it's something not many people get to do."
He said he had only really started to think about the possibility after he signed his own contract and his father announced he intended to keep playing. "It was a good moment, at the full-time whistle he came over and saw me so it was a good feeling," he added.
"I didn't realise that it was history until I was told when I came off, it is a proud moment but not one that I will dwell on," he said. Wullie added that Lewis had been in the squad on merit thanks to his performance in a reserve game and in training.
From Watching On Youtube, Haggai Ndubuisi Is Now Ready To Shine In The NFL
THE BRUTALITY of life in the NFL has not put off Haggai Ndubuisi from chasing a career in American football.
The 21-year-old Nigerian only began playing the sport four years ago, and seemed to have capped his remarkable rise earlier this year when he signed for the Arizona Cardinals in April.
However, he was cut from the roster four months later. Yet he has vowed to fight his way back onto the road that took him from Abuja to Arizona.
At 6’6” tall, Ndubuisi grew up playing football and basketball in Nigeria before finding a passion for American football on the internet.
"American football is not a sport that is in Nigeria per say - it is like a sport without hope. There is no future in it," he said.
''It was basically watching YouTube and going to practice on our own. When we started people thought we were joking, but as time went on, we started organizing camps to get more people."
