Auch in Sachen Connectivity wird die Sprachsteuerung vollenden, was Touchscreens heute leisten. Standard ist ja, dass sich Kameras und mobile Aufnahmegeräte automatisch in WLAN Umgebungen und Co. einloggen und mit anderen Geräten wie Fernsehern, Tablets, Druckern, Computern usw. drahtlos kommunizieren. Ein Wisch auf der KameramonitorOberfläche und schon „wandert“ das Bild beispielsweise auf den 100“-TV-Monitor.

Bildbearbeitung und alles weitere wird über ein Display (Tablet, Kamera, Smartphone) erledigt. Computer?

Ist ab sofort von dem häuslichen Bildermanagement ausgeschlossen. Die Daten wandern in die Cloud des Vertrauens, ein Speichermedium dient zum Backup als Sicherungsmaßnahme für die Bilddaten.

Samsung zeigt derzeit die größte Konsequenz in der Produktfülle und Konzeption einer allzeit und allerseits vernetzten Gerätewelt. Die Galaxy Kamera gehorcht nicht nur aufs Wort, sondern ist durch integrierte SIM-Karte völlig unabhängig von mitzuschleppenden Smartphones netzwerkfähig. Und auch alle relevanten Bilddienstleistungen sind adhoc bestellbar. Für alle Hersteller gilt: Mehr oder weniger sinnvolle Apps tunen die Kameras individuell zu maßgeschneiderten Bilder-Aufnahmemaschinen – durchaus mit einer Zunahme an echtem Fotospaß. Ja, das können Smartphones auch, sogar schon längst. Aber die telefonfähigen Alleskönner können eben nicht alles richtig gut – bei der Bildqualität haben sie gegenüber „echten“ Kameras nach wie vor das Nachsehen. Ob das der Verbraucher in Zukunft als Produktvorteil wahrnimmt, das ist die Kommunikationsaufgabe der Hersteller. Das große Ganze, die Fotound Imagingbranche, wird durch diese Innovationen jedenfalls weiter wachsen: Kameras werden immer bessere mobile Endgeräte, Smartphones werden immer bessere Kameras.

Und jeder ist mit jedem drahtlos verbunden. Ob sich alle Beteiligten dann auch verstehen, steht auf einem anderen Blatt. [wh]

And when it comes to connectivity, voice control will finish what touchscreens do today. Standard is that cameras and mobile recording devices automatically communicate wirelessly with other devices such as televisions, tablets, printers, computers, etc. in WLAN surroundings. One swipe across the camera’s surface and the images will “wander” over to a 100-inch TV screen.

Image processing and everything else will be finished on a display (tablet, camera, smartphone). Computer? The data will wander to a trusted cloud; a data storage medium will serve as a backup for securing image data.

Samsung is currently showing most remarkable results of the wealth of products and conceptions in a world which is linked all the time and everywhere. And all of the relevant image processing services are available to order.

For all manufacturers it is true that more or less useful Apps individually tune the cameras to become tailored image recording devices – and certainly with an increase in real photographic fun. Oh yes, Smartphones can do that already

and have been able to for a long time. But the telephone-capable all-rounders can’t do everything really well – in reference to image quality, they aren’t nearly as good as “real” cameras.

Whether consumers will recognize this advantage is the communication responsibility of the manufacturers. The big picture is that the photo and imaging industry will continue to grow: cameras will become even better mobile devices and Smartphones will become even better cameras. And everyone is linked wirelessly to everyone else. Whether all participants understand each other, well, that’s another story. [wh]

An der Börse spiegelt sich die Innovationskraft der Fotobranche wider. Während Kodak-Aktien auf einem historischen Tiefpunkt verharren, feiern andere große Foto-Marken am Finanzmarkt Erfolge. Mit neuen Produkten und Strategien konnten vor allem Leica und Nikon mit ihrem stark fokussierten Portfolio das Vertrauen der Anleger gewinnen.

Leica and Nikon were especially able to win investors’ trust with new products and strategies and their highly focused portfolio.

iele Beobachter zuckten nur müde mit den Schultern, als Kodak vor wenigen Wochen mitteilte, sein Kerngeschäft mit Fotofilmen abzustoßen und auch seine weltweit 100.000 Fotokioske zu verkaufen. In der Fotobranche sorgten die Meldungen aus der Konzernzentrale in Rochester, New York, längst nicht mehr für Aufregung. Und auch an der Börse reagierten die Händler kaum noch auf den anhaltenden Ausverkauf des einstigen Weltkonzerns. Der Börsenkurs des Unternehmens verharrt auf historischem Tiefstand. Anfang September kostete eine Eastman-Kodak-Aktie gerade mal 0,20 Euro. Vor zwei Jahren lag der Wert bei knapp 3,80 Euro. Auch andere Unternehmen der Fotobranche mussten seit der photokina 2010 zusehen, wie ihr Börsenwert schrumpfte. Ob Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic oder Sony – die Kurse haben vereinzelt bis zu 60 Prozent nachgegeben. So tief wie Kodak freilich ist keiner gefallen: Die Aktien haben binnen zwei Jahresfrist 95 Prozent ihres Wertes verloren. Mit einer radikalen Konzentration auf das Druckergeschäft will Konzernchef Antonio Perez jetzt das Vertrauen der Anleger zurückgewinnen.

Der dramatische Absturz des gelben Riesen sorgt bei vielen Branchenbeobachtern noch heute für Kopfschütteln und Fassungslosigkeit.

Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic or Sony – the indexes have in some cases decreased up to 60 percent. No one has fallen as deep as Kodak: the stocks have lost 95 percent of their worth within a two-year period. Company boss Antonio Perez is trying to win back investor’s trust with a radical concentration of the printer business. The dramatic plunge of the yellow giant causes head shaking and disbelief for many industry observers. Four decades ago Kodak had dominated the American photo market by 80 percent. In 1975, the company even introduced the world’s first digital camera. However, that model disappeared into the cabinets again because Kodak management didn’t want to put the extremely lucrative film material business in jeopardy.

Fujifilm is setting signals for the future Ten years ago the alarm bells were even ringing for Kodak’s competitor Fujifilm. Rückschläge durch Naturkatastrophen Die Flut- und Reaktorkatstrophe in Japan hat nicht nur Fujifilm hart getroffen. Die Kurse von Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic und Tamron befanden sich in den Tagen nach dem 11.

März 2011 auf rasanter Talfahrt. Doch die Unternehmen erholten sich von den Rückschlägen. In den folgenden Monaten pegelten sich die Aktienwerte weitestgehend wieder auf dem alten Level ein – und die Kurse setzen seither den vorherigen Trend weitestgehend fort. Die Nikon Corporation hat sich seither gar zur Erfolgsgeschichte für Investoren entwickelt. Im Gegensatz zum Großteil der Branche ist der Kurs des Kameraherstellers in den vergangenen Monaten gestiegen – und das, obwohl die wichtige DSLR-Produktion wegen der Flut in Thailand wochenlang nicht auf Volltouren lief. Den positiven Trend an der Börse führen Branchenkenner vielmehr auf den erfolgreichen Einstieg in den Markt der spiegellosen Systemkameras (Nikon 1) zurück. Hier konnte Nikon in 35 den vergangenen Monaten große Marktanteile hin30 zugewinnen. Das hat für Vertrauen an der Börse ge25 sorgt. Im Vergleich zum Kurs vor zwei Jahren 20 liegt die Nikon-

Nachdem das vergleichsweise kleine Unternehmen den Gewinn im Geschäftsjahr 2011 um 4,2 Prozent auf 5,68 Milliarden Yen (ca. 57 Millionen Euro) steigern konnte, erreichte der zuvor gefallene Kurs inzwischen eine Vier-Jahres-Hoch. Am meisten Spaß macht den Investoren an der Börse zurzeit aber wohl der deutsche Kamerahersteller Leica. Wer vor drei Jahren beim traditionsreichen Markenunternehmen eingestiegen ist, kann sich über satte Zugewinne freuen. Seit die Leica-Aktie im Februar 2009 einen historischen Tiefststand erreichte, hat sie inzwischen zu neuen Höhenflügen angesetzt. Die Nachfrage ist zeitweise so groß, dass der Börsenwert regelrechte Sprünge nach oben macht. Nicht nur der Aktienwert steigt. Die Besinnung auf hochwertige Kameramodelle für Profis (S2) und gut betuchte Hobbyfotografen (M9) zahlt sich für die Anleger inzwischen wieder doppelt aus. Im Juni schlug der Vorstand der Leica Camera AG den Aktionären nach einer 14-jährigen Durststrecke zum zweiten Mal in Folge eine Dividende vor. [da]

The demand for Fujifilm stocks is sinking. After the tsunami catastrophe, the stocks continued to lose value. This could change however, if the massive reorganization takes hold. The company has invested heavily in the development of new products. Even in the photo sector which also reflected its core as a brand with a strong photographic tradition. Two years ago the company landed a coup with the retro camera X100.

The new models X-E1 and X-F1 certainly reflect this tradition and with them the company wants to go back to making a profit in the “Imaging Solutions” sector.

Industry experts trace the positive trend on the stock market in particular to the successful entrance of mirrorless system cameras (Nikon 1) onto the market. Here Nikon was able to win large additional market shares in the last months. Compared to the share price from two years ago, the Nikon stock lies at approximately 40 percent in the plus and thus finds itself almost at the same level that it had before the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008.

EURO 57 million) in the business year 2011, the previously fallen share price has meanwhile reached a four-year high. Currently, investors in the stock market are having the most fun with the German company Leica.

Those who bought stock in this traditional brand company three years ago will be delighted with sizable gains. Since the Leica stock hit an historical low in February 2009, it is now on a new high flight. The current demand is so large that the stock value is shooting up in leaps and bounds. Not just the stock value is going up.

The desire for high-quality camera models for professional (S2) and well-to-do hobby photographers has meanwhile meant a double return for the investors. In June, after a 14-year dry period, the Leica Camera AG Board gave the stockholders a dividend payment for the second time in a row. [da]

ie Anzahl der „Picture taking“ Produkte hat Jahr für Jahr eine positive Entwicklung zu verzeichnen. In 2011 erweiterte sich dieser Markt um 24 % Prozent, im 1 HJ 2012 um

weitere 17 %. Den Löwenanteil an diesem Bereich macht der Sektor „Mobile Imaging“ aus.

Eine Produktkategorie, die stark im Wandel ist vom Phone zum Cameraphone, vom Camera-

phone zum Featurephone und nun zum Smartphone. Auch wenn der Markt für Phones weltweit noch wächst, so ist in einem Markt wie Westeuropa nur eine Verschiebung innerhalb der Produkte zu beobachten. Auch wenn Smart- und Camphones heutzutage überwiegend dem Mobilephone gleichgesetzt werden, so muss man dennoch berücksichtigen, dass in einigen Regionen der Welt, zum Beispiel in Osteuropa, knapp 30 % der Phones keine Kamera beinhalten, in Afrika sogar mehr als ein Drittel! Year after year, the number of „picture taking“ products has been posting growth. In 2011 the market expanded by 24 percent and then by a further 17 % in the first six months of 2012. The lion’s share is accounted for by the „mobile imaging“ sector. This is a product category which has been in a state of rapid change, as it has moved from phone to cameraphone, from cameraphone to featurephone and now to smartphone. Even though the worldwide market for cameraphones is still growing, within markets such as Western Europe, what is being seen is only a repositioning of products. Even if smartphones and cameraphones are today regarded as equivalent to mobile phones, it is still necessary to keep in mind that in some parts of the world, for instance Eastern Europe, almost 30 % of mobile phones do not have a camera, in Africa more than a third! The mobile phone is therefore almost only used for telephoning. Phones are primarily distinguished by certain technical features, which primarily refer back to their role as telephones. Eine große Bedeutung nimmt bei den Bildern der Feature-/Smartphones auch die Dokumentation ein. Die Kamera demgegenüber zeigte bislang noch ein „Manko“ in Bezug auf Connectivity, erfüllt jedoch höchste Ansprüche im Rahmen der Bildaufnahme und dies nicht unerheblich über die Möglichkeit, Kameras mit austauschbarem Objektiv zu wählen und ergänzendes Zubehör, zum Beispiel Blitz und Leuchten zu nutzen. Aufgrund der derzeitigen technischen Ausstattung sind sicherlich noch sehr deutlich unterschiedliche Schwerpunkte im Rahmen der Fotografie und Bildaufzeichnung bei beiden Produkten vorzufinden.

Nicht zu übersehen sind die Einflüsse, die die Camphones auf die Kameras ausüben. Zum einen hat sich sicherlich ein anderes Wertgefühl durch die Smartphones entwickelt. Die neuen Lifestyle-Produkte haben nicht unerhebliche Marktpreise, und dies ist nicht ganz ohne Auswirkung auf das Preisempfinden, was auch eine Kamera kosten darf. Ein nächster Faktor ist, dass scheinbar „low end“ Preisklassen der Kameras stärker unter diesen Camphones leiden. Kameras mit weniger Ausstattung können sehr leicht über das Mobile phone/Featurephone ersetzt werden. Demgegenüber eröffnet es aber gute Entwicklungsund Verkaufsmöglichkeiten für Digitalkameras sowohl mit eingebautem Objektiv als auch

mit auswechselbarem Objektiv, welche spezifische Kamerafeatures anbieten und hohe Bild- und Videoqualität gewährleisten. Ein solcher Trend ist derzeit global bei den Abverkäufen der Digitalkameras zu beobachten. Die Durchschnittspreise der Digitalkameras sind in den letzten zwölf Monaten deutlich angestiegen. In den von der GfK beobachteten 66 Ländern der Welt ist der Durchschnittspreis in den letzten 12 Monaten um 20 % über das gesamte Digitalkamerasortiment angestiegen. In Westeuropa liegt die Erhöhung bei 19 %. Im chinesischen Markt, dem Markt der derzeit offensichtlich am meisten den Einfluss der Smart- und Mobilephones aufgrund von sehr preiswerten lokalen Anbietern für Smartphones im Chinesischen Markt verspürt, gibt der chinesische Kunde aktuell 35 % mehr für eine Digitalkamera aus, als es noch im Juli 2011 war.

Eine solche Entwicklung – bedingt durch Smart- und Mobilephones – ist jedenfalls als ein positiver Trend zu sehen. Ferner ist nicht zu übersehen, dass durch die „allgegenwärtigen“ Phones auch eine neue Konsumentenschicht, seien es junge Leute oder aber auch Personen, die sich vorher nicht intensiv mit der Fotografie auseinander gesetzt haben, mit diesem Hobby konfrontiert werden und stellen somit eine erweiterte Plattform für fotografische Produkte und Anwendungen dar.

In the 66 countries in the world which are monitored by GfK, average prices for the full range of digital cameras have gone up by about 20 % in the last twelve months. In the Chinese market, which is the one where the impact of smartphones and mobile phones has been felt the most because of the very low prices on smartphones available from local competitors, the Chinese customer is currently spending 35% more to buy a digital camera than in July 2011.

This kind of trend which is caused by smartphones and mobile phones is certainly to be regarded as desirable. Additionally, it must not

Reiner Fageth: Aus technologischer Sicht entwickelt sich der Bildermarkt in zwei Richtungen: Vorhandene Produkte und Services werden immer stärker diversifiziert, verbessert und damit attraktiver, gleichzeitig eröffnen sich durch die Integration der Bildtechnologien in sämtliche Kommunikationsstrukturen und Netzwerke ganz neue Perspektiven für den Umgang mit Bildern – mobil und vernetzt.

Desktop-Anwendungen sind immer einfacher zu bedienen und Online-Systeme durch neue Technologien wie HTML 5 über alle Plattformen nutzbar und ähnlich einfach zu bedienen wie die Desktop-Anbindungen. Damit wird vielen Anwendern die Scheu vor der Nutzung genommen. Mobile Geräte wie Smartphones werden immer häufiger auch dazu genutzt, um Bilder beispielsweise auf Kiosken auszubelichten. Aktuell befindet sich in jedem achten CEWE FOTOBUCH mindestens ein Bild, das mit einem Handy aufgenommen wurde. Die Nikon 1 ist mehrfach für ihr Design ausgezeichnet worden. Welche Rolle spielt das Design im Markt der spiegellosen Sytemkameras?

Tadashi Nakayama: Das Design der Kamera ist von zweifacher Bedeutung. Erstens entscheidet es darüber, ob der potenzielle Käufer die Kamera überhaupt als ansprechend wahrnimmt. Beim ersten Anblick entscheidet er sich bereits, ob dieses Produkt zu seinem persönlichen Lifestyle passt. Nikon 1 richtet sich somit also nicht an Käufer, die nach einer Spiegelreflexkamera suchen. Zweitens schließt das Design die Gestaltung des Interface ein, über das der Nutzer mit der Kamera interagiert. Die Nikon 1 besitzt viele neuartige Funktionen, die auf aktuellster Digital-Technologie basieren.

Diese Hightech-Funktionen müssen für den Kaufinteressenten schnell verständlich und leicht zu nutzen sein.

Tadashi Nakayama: Anfangs verständigten wir uns auf die gewünschten technischen Spezifikationen. Die Herausforderung bestand dann darin, dieses kraftvolle System in ein kompaktes und minimalistisches Gehäuse zu integrieren.

Als dies gelungen war, konzentrierten wir uns auf ergonomische Aspekte, wie zum Beispiel eine komfortable Handhabung und eine intuitive Bedienung.

Wir kamen zu der Überzeugung, dass der schlanke Nikon-1-Body idealerweise mit möglichst wenigen Knöpfen ausgestattet werden sollte. Dies ist letztlich der Grund, warum die Nikon 1 so leicht zu bedienen ist.

Was entscheidet letztlich über den Erfolg: Design oder Funktion?

Im Gegensatz zu früher denken wir also intensiver darüber nach, wie wir für verschiedene Zielgruppen „Funktionalität designen“. Folglich sehen wir in jüngster Zeit immer mehr Kameras, die gezielt für eine bestimmte Gruppe von Personen entwickelt wurden.

Die Geschmäcker sind von Land zu Land verschieden. Wie begegnen Sie dieser Herausforderung?

Tadashi Nakayama: Sicherlich existieren in den verschiedenen Nationen und Kulturen ganz unterschiedliche Vorlieben. Trotzdem gibt es bestimmte Elemente, die in fast allen Märkten gleichsam von Bedeutung sind. First, it is important because design talks to potential users. In most cases, the potential users would meet the product by view. Then they immediately start selecting whether if the product is suitable for his/her lifestyle. As Nikon 1 is a proposal from Nikon based on the new value perspective for potential customers who have never thought about purchasing a big SLR camera, the design must be approachable and somehow convey our message. Second, it is important because design is a part of interface between the camera and the user. Nikon 1 has many new functions based on the latest digital and analog technologies. Those new high-tech functions must be easily usable by such potential customers.

For example?

Tadashi Nakayama: We have successfully integrated continuous shooting speed at 10 frames per second with AF, AE and AWB tracking for all Nikon 1 cameras. This level of speed was only available for professional photographers who capture the historical moments, like a football goal or a top athlete running through the 100m goal line, with using top pro equipments like Nikon D4. Nikon 1 has redefined our perception of camera design. Which were the most important steps in agreeing onto the design features?

Tadashi Nakayama: When we had an idea of the technical specifications, the first and biggest challenge was how to incorporate such a powerful engine and sensor into a compact, sleek, and minimalist design. We then concentrated on the ergonomics, such as comfortable handling and intuitive operation, and came to the conclusion that the sleek body goes well with minimal buttons, which is why the Nikon 1 became a very easy-to-use camera in the end.

Which has more influence onto the potential success of a new camera: design or function?

Tadashi Nakayama: For us, design and functionality are the same. Design is a representation of its functions with some translations for the target users. They must form a unity, as only the perfect balance of performance and design attracts the customers’ awareness.

How has this changed over the last 10 years?

Tadashi Nakayama: In the past decade, technology has taken a huge step forward, meaning that higher performance is possible but requires much less space. This development gives us to consider different “function to design translations� for different type of potential users. Therefore within the last ten years, cameras have become much more friendly and easy to use for each type of persons.

How difficult is it to achieve the global design?

Tadashi Nakayama: Of course, taste varies throughout different countries and cultures.

However, there are certain elements that are regarded as important in almost every market.

Markus Oster: Ich freue mich natürlich sehr, wenn ich die vollen Hallen sehe, die mehr als zufriedenen Aussteller spreche und hier auf Schritt und Tritt erlebe, welche Faszination die Fotografie auf der photokina auf die internationalen Besucher ausstrahlt. Ein ganz persönliches Highlight ist heute die Vorstellung des ersten Smartphones mit Windows 8 Betriebssystem von HTC exklusiv hier auf der Weltmesse des Bildes. Das ist mehr als eine Produktvorstellung, das ist ein Signal: Mobile Imaging ist eines der wichtigsten Trendthemen – und die photokina ist die Plattform, auf der bildrelevante Innovationen vorgestellt werden.

Wie sehen Sie den bisherigen Verlauf der Weltmesse des Bildes zur Halbzeit?

Markus Oster: Wir sehen einen klaren Trend bei den Besuchern hin zu einer immer stärkeren Internationalität. Das bekräftigt und bestätigt die Position der photokina als weltweit einzige Leitmesse für Foto und Imaging. Wir freuen uns aber auch, dass es uns gelungen ist, neue junge Zielgruppen zu erreichen und diese dazu zu motivieren, auf die photokina zu kommen. Unter allen beteiligten, Ausstellern wie Besuchern, herrscht eine ausgesprochen positive Stimmung und wir können davon ausgehen, dass dies eine sehr erfolgreiche Messe sein wird.

Welche Impulse gehen von der photokina 2012 für die Foto- und Imagingbranche aus?

Markus Oster: Diese photokina hat große Trends gesetzt, die noch weit über die eigentliche Messe hinaus ihre Wirkungen zeigen werde. Die zunehmende Konnektivität der Produkte sorgt nicht nur für ganz neue Anwendungsbereiche, sondern für eine immer stärkere Implementierung von Imagingprodukten in den Alltag von uns allen.

Der Trend „Movie“ eröffnet ganz neue Möglichkeiten, Steh- und Bewegtbilder miteinander zu verknüpfen und erhöht das „Erlebnis Bild“ ganz wesentlich. CGI, Computer Generated Imaging, hat sich als innovativer Bereich der professionellen Fotografie etabliert und wird immer neue Bilderwelten kreieren. Mobile Imaging schließlich vergrößert die Potenziale des Foto- und Imagingmarktes auf allen Ebenen von den Herstellern über den Handel bis zu den Anwendern. Es eröffnet neue Zielgruppen und Märkte. Markus Oster: Naturally, I am very happy to see the halls full of people, to talk to satisfied exhibitors and to experience first-hand the kind of fascination photography at photokina radiates to our international visitors. One of my personal highlights is the exclusive presentation today of the first Smartphone with Windows 8 operating system from HTC at the world trade fair for imaging.

This is more than a product introduction, it is a signal: Mobile Imaging is one of the most important trend topics – and photokina is the platform where image-relevant innovations are presented.

How do you see the world trade fair for imaging’s course to date at this half-time mark?

Markus Oster: We see a clear trend from the visitors to an even stronger sense of internationality. This reaffirms photokina’s position as the only leading worldwide trade fair for photo and imaging. We are also happy that we have been able to reach new, younger target groups and to have been able to motivate them to come to photokina. For all those involve, be it exhibitors or visitors, there is an exceptionally positive atmosphere and we can be assured that this will be a very successful trade fair.

Which impulses will develop from photokina 2012 for the photo and imaging industry?

Markus Oster: This photokina has set some very big trends, which will show its effects long after the trade fair has finished. The products’ increasing connectivity will not only ensure for completely new application areas, but also for an ever stronger implementation of imaging products in our everyday lives. The “movie” trend opens up completely new possibilities of combining still and moving images together and significantly increasing the “experience image”.

CGI, Computer Generated Imaging, has established itself as an innovator in professional photography and will always create new image worlds. In the end, Mobile Imaging enlarges the photo and imaging market’s potential on all levels, from manufacturers to dealers all the way to consumers. It is creating new target groups and markets. Generally speaking, photokina 2012 has introduced a firework of new products that mirror the industry’s innovation strength. We expect that this exceptionally positive impulse from photokina will also have a positive effect on upcoming Christmas sales. [wh]

Dr. Winfried Scherle: Carl Zeiss is a driving force behind innovation in the optical industry.

For example, we are empowering the semiconductor industry to expand new horizons with our optics for lithographic systems. In this way we are creating the capability to save more and more data, which contributes to the development of the imaging industry. This business field – one of the most important and largest at Carl Zeiss – has its roots in simple photo lenses. We are very active behind the scenes. Our business operations have a significant importance on brand recognition – and is like the tip of the iceberg which only suggests the mass underneath.

Most people connect the brand name Zeiss with optical competence. What is the secret of the optical quality of Carl Zeiss products, such that so many other manufacturers in the imaging field depend on the quality brand Carl Zeiss?

Dr. Winfried Scherle: Optical competence is our DNA. Ernst Abbe – our spiritual father and visionary – developed the formulas for the physical laws of optics; today all optics are calculated and optimized on that basis. We see this as our obligation. That is why we, as a company with a foundation character, can afford to commit ourselves to quality.

Carl Zeiss photo and video lenses belong to the best not only in the areas of film, photo and video, but also among Smartphones. And now the new category of DSLM lenses is being added. What chances does Carl Zeiss see in this market?

quick connectivity seems to be more important than the quality of the images. Are photos in “Zeiss quality” even in demand in this rapidly growing segment?

Dr. Winfried Scherle: The trend to mirrorless system cameras has continued even stronger since 2010 and we also see an increased interest from ambitious photographers. We are convinced that this market will become even more important because of new and especially high quality cameras and lenses; and we see large potential which is why we will be offering future products in this sector. At our trade fair booth in Hall 2.1, we will be presenting the first studies and we are planning the market introduction of a new lens in the next year.

Dr. Winfried Scherle: Definitely yes! Quality to us means that we stand for top quality in any particular market segment, whereby the quality for a professional application looks very different from an application with Smartphones. The experiences benefit through mutual synergy. For example we recently introduced the PureView 808 with 41 megapixels with our partner Nokia – a great challenge to optics – and at photokina we will show a new DLSR lens with which we have not allowed for any compromises. And the images from consumers in our Facebook community (facebook.com/CarlZeissLenses) as well as our Flickr group (flickr.com/groups/CarlZeissLenses) are the best proof that the artistic quality of images can also be quite high, even in social networks.

This close exchange with our customers has led to a completely new dimension of customer proximity which we cannot imagine living without. Recently we introduced the Distagon T* 2.8/15, a lens that was developed based on requests from our communities.

Michael Langbehn: Wir haben die Entwicklung der DSLM-Sparte 2008 mit der Vorstellung der LUMIX G1 eröffnet und seitdem entscheidend gestaltet. Der Erfolg unseres LUMIX G Systems bestätigt uns darin, dass unser Fokus der Richtige ist: Wir möchten mit den DSLM-Kameras sowohl Einsteigern als auch erfahrenen Fotografen eine leichte und kompakte Alternative zu DSLR-Kameras bieten; der Wegfall des Spiegels erlaubt die kompakte Bauweise ohne Einschränkung der Sensorgröße. Ferner denken wir, dass sich Konsumenten durch Smartphone-Fotografie zunehmend für Fotografie begeistern werden und sich deshalb über kurz oder lang für eine hochqualitative Kompaktbzw. Smartphones bieten heute schon eine Vielzahl von Foto und Videofunktionen, die sich über Apps erweitern lassen. Werden Kameras der nächsten Genera­tion Funktionen von Mobiltelefonen bieten?

Ist etwas sinnvoll wie beispielsweise Motivprogramme im Retro-Look oder WiFi-Anbindung einer Kamera, dann verschließen wir uns nicht davor. Gerade im Kompaktkamerasegment, in dem Panasonic wieder Marktführer ist, setzen wir mit der SZ5 auf drahtlose Konnektivität per W-Lan.

Wo sieht Panasonic die größten Herausforderungen für den Kameramarkt und wie will man Ihnen begegnen?

Michael Langbehn: Der Kameramarkt befindet sich mit dem wachsenden DSLM-Markt im Umbruch und Panasonic hat es in den vergangenen Jahren verstanden, diese neue Kameraklasse als Pionier und Innovationsführer maß­ geblich zu gestalten und auszubauen. Nachdem uns nun alle großen Hersteller in das DSLMGeschäft gefolgt sind, werden wir unseren Vorsprung nur dann behaupten, wenn wir mit weiterer Innovationskraft die Potenziale des LUMIX G Systems weiterentwickeln. Panasonic belongs to the pioneers in developing the market for DSLM cameras and have contributed significantly to its development right from the beginning. Meanwhile all important camera manufacturers offer DSLM models in their product portfolio. However no other product category is marked by so many different strategies concerning target group, sensor size and image quality. Why has Panasonic concentrated on the MFT format?

Michael Langbehn: We influenced the development of the DSLM segment in 2008 with the introduction of the LUMIX G1 and since then we have decisively shaped it. The success of our

LUMIX G system has proven to us that our focus was the correct one: with the DSLM cameras we want to offer beginners as well as professionals a light and compact alternative to DSLR cameras. The removal of the mirror allows for the compact construction without a limitation in the sensor size. The large development potential of the MFT format – with the LUMIX G5 we have just introduced the fourth model generation – we have met the different expectations of this varied target group: easy operation and a sensible assistance system on the one hand and high quality in individual functions even above the DSLR level on the other hand mean that more DSLM systems than DSLR systems will be purchased in the next few years.

How important is video recording as an additional feature in cameras?

Michael Langbehn: It is no longer possible to do without the hybrid functionality of digital

cameras, especially in photo journalism. We consistently focus on the combination of still and moving images in full HD quality. Professionals use the GH model in our LUMIX G series because they are equal in quality, but are a lighter and cheaper alternative to established camera systems. Because of their flexibility, DSLM cameras create a bridge between professional photography and videography.

We love photography and that is why we are excited about this development. At the same time there is a difference in the expectations of a snapshot and

Today smartphones offer a wide variety of photo and video functions which can be upgraded using Apps. Will the next generation cameras offer mobile telephone functions?

Michael Langbehn: We are observing very closely which camera App trends will be transferable to cameras. If things like motive programs in retro look or a camera’s WiFi connection make sense, then we won’t ignore it.

Especially in the compact camera segment, where Panasonic is again the market leader, we are building on wireless connection through WLAN with the SZ5.

Where does Panasonic see the biggest challenges for the camera market and how will you meet them?

Michael Langbehn: The camera market finds itself at a crossroad with the growing DSLM Market and in the last few years Panasonic has understood how to decidedly develop and expand this new class of camera. After all of the big manufacturers have followed in our footsteps in the DSLM sector, we will only be able to maintain our lead if we channel our innovative strength into developing the LUMIX G’s potential. Auch Informationen wie das Histogramm oder eine digitale Wasserwage lassen sich einblenden. Der optische Bildstabilisator (Steadyshot) reduziert Verwacklungen bei Fotos und Videos. Das robuste Gehäuse der SLTA99 besteht aus einer Magnesium-Legierung und ist dank Abdichtungen vor Staub und Feuchtigkeit geschützt.

Auch für das Aufzeichnen von Videos ist die Kamera perfekt ausgestattet: Sie nimmt Bewegtbilder in Full HD Qualität mit 60/50 (NTSC/PAL) oder 24/25 (NTSC/PAL) Bildern pro Sekunde auf.

Made for photographers: The NEX-6 compact system camera from Sony puts DSLR power in your pocket

Memories Camera Apps Plattform stellt hierfür teils kostenlose Apps bereit, die wie bei einem Smartphone auf der Kamera installiert werden können. Als erste dieser so genannten „PlayMemories Camera Apps“ steht beispielsweise die Fernbedienungs-App „Smart Remote Control“ zur Verfügung, mit der die Kamera via Smartphone gesteuert werden kann oder „Direct Upload“, um die erstellten Fotos schnell ins WorldWideWeb zu bringen.

Sowohl die NEX-5R als auch die NEX-6 bieten in einem kompakten Gehäuse eine Auflösung von 16,1 Mio. Pixeln und einen Exmor APS-C HD CMOS Sensor. Beide Kameras verfügen zudem über einen völlig neuen Fast-Hybrid-Autofokus, der Serienaufnahmen mit bis zu zehn Bildern pro Sekunde bei voller Schärfenachführung ermöglicht. Bewegte Bilder halten beide NEX Neulinge in Full HD Qualität fest. Die NEX-6 punktet zudem mit einem hochauflösenden OLED-Sucher, einem integrierten Blitz und zwei Einstellrädern, die NEX-5R bietet ein Touch-Display.

ith the DSC-RX100, Sony presents a Cybershot camera with an image sensor that’s four times larger than its counterparts on conventional compact cameras. But as far their picture quality is concerned, the newest mirrorless system cameras in the NEX series are already beyond the shadow of a doubt. Sony’s new masterpiece is undoubtedly the new SLT-A99 mirror reflex camera with a partially transparent mirror and a full-format sensor.

The SLT-A99 from Sony Sony’s new full-format camera is the top-of-theline model in the SLT family. With 24.3-megapixel

sensor resolution and a partially transparent mirror, this camera is equipped for practically every photographic mission. The newly developed fullformat Exmor CMOS sensor and the BIONZ image processor guarantee optimal picture quality.

The sensor’s new, optimized construction lets more light reach the sensor, so the sensitivity is 1.5 times greater than on the previous model, i.e. the DSLR-A900. This also effectively reduces picture noise. The camera records RAW images with 14-bit color depth. Sony’s newly developed autofocus system relies on 19 AF sensors, 11 crosstype sensors and 102 auxiliary focal points to assure extremely fast and precise focusing that can also keep an optimally sharp eye on every subject, no matter how fast it moves.

Thanks to the digital OLED viewfinder, this camera always shows a 100% section of the shot photo, even when APS-C lenses are used. Information such as the histogram or a digital spirit-level can be superimposed. The optical image stabilizer (Steadyshot) reduces shake in photos and videos.

The sturdy case of the SLT-A99 is made from a magnesium alloy. Insulators protect the case against intrusion by dust and moisture.

This camera is also perfectly equipped for video recording. It can shoot moving images in full-HD quality with 60/50 (NTSC/PAL) or 24/25 (NTSC/ PAL) pictures per second. Of course, a video’s sound is just as important as its images, so the optional XLR adapter kit lets the user connect professional microphones, which can be connected via a new multi-interface shoe that replaces Sony’s previous flash shoe. Any subject can be perfectly captured thanks to the 2.4-million-pixel OLED viewfinder and the spacious, three-inch, flexibly pivoting display.

The NEX-5R and the NEX-6 from Sony Thanks to their built-in Wi-Fi, Sony’s new NEX5R and NEX-6 system cameras are freely configurable via the Internet. To complement Germany’s first two Wi-Fi-capable NEX cameras, Sony is also introducing the world’s first online download service, which helps users individually modify the functions of the new cameras. The PlayMemories Camera Apps platform makes available cost-free apps that can be installed on the camera in the same way an app can be installed on a smartphone. For example, among the first of these PlayMemories Camera Apps are the “Smart Remote Control” app, which lets a user remotely control the camera via a smartphone, and “Direct Upload,” which enables users to speedily upload their photos onto the World Wide Web. Inside their compact cases, the NEX-5R and the NEX-6 offer 16.1-million-pixel resolution and an Exmor APS-C HD CMOS sensor. Each camera is also equipped with a totally new fast-hybrid autofocus for rapidly shooting a series of photos: up to 10 pictures per second with fully automatic focus tracking are possible. These two NEX newcomers capture moving images in full-HD quality. The NEX-6 also scores points with a high-resolution OLED viewfinder, a built-in flash and two setting wheels; the NEX-6R offers a touch display.

Auch die Flexibilität wurde durch zusätzliche Papierformate- und -gewichte erhöht. Durch Hinzufügen der Farben Sky Blue und Pink zu den C,M,Y, K Standardfarben wurde eine herausragende Druckqualität erreicht. Die Maschine kann in zwei Modi betrieben werden.

Der „Standard Quality Modus“ ermöglicht eine höhere Produktivität, während der „High-Quality-Modus“ für eine verbesserte Druckqualität sorgt. Im Standard Quality Modus erreicht das Dry Minilab DL650 Pro eine um etwa 1,5 x höhere Produktivität. Dabei wird mit sechs Tinten und einer Auflösung von 720 x 720 dpi gedruckt. In dieser Betriebsart kann das Gerät etwa 950 Blatt pro Stunde drucken. Im High Quality Modus mit 1440 x 1440 dpi mit ebenfalls sechs Tinten erreicht das Dry Minilab DL650 eine feinere Körnung und sanftere Farbabstufen, was vor allem auch bei der Wiedergabe von Hauttönen deutlich wird. Das neue Dry-Lab bietet zwei Arten der Farbwiedergabe: Natürliche Farbwiedergabe und lebendige Farbwiedergabe für eine Hervorhebung von Farbtönen mit höherer Sättigung. Die Steuerung des Workflows übernimmt die Management Software (MS) von Fujifilm, die auch die Auftragsabwicklung übernimmt und zudem mehrere Geräte steuern kann.

Viele kleine, bunte instax minis In frischen bunten Farben bringt Fujifilm die neue instax mini 8 Sofortbildkamera auf den Markt. Das neue Sortiment umfasst die Farben Weiß, Schwarz, Pink, Blau und Gelb. Die neuentwickelte instax mini 8 ist kleiner und dünner als die instax mini 7s nutzt aber dasselbe Designkonzept. Ihr Sucher wurde für eine komfortablere Ausschnittwahl optimiert. Zudem gibt es einen neuen High-Key-Modus, der eine hellere Wiedergabe des Motivs bewirkt.

It uses the newly developed 6-color ink system for improved color reproduction and functionality. Even the flexibility has improved through additional paper formats and weights. By adding the colors blue and pink to the standard colors -- C, M, Y, K -- an excellent print quality could be achieved. The machine can run in two modes. The “Standard Quality mode” provides a higher productivity whereas the “High-Quality mode” ensures an improved print quality. In standard mode, the Dry Minilab DL650 Pro achieves a 1.5 times higher productivity. It prints with six inks and a resolution of 720 x 720 dpi. In this operating mode, this device can print approximately 950 pages per hour. In high-quality mode, the Dry Minilab DL650 achieves a finer grain and smoother color gradations, which is especially obvious in the reproduction of skin tones. The new Dry-Lab offers two types of color reproduction: natural color reproduction and lively color reproduction for an emphasis in color tones with a higher saturation. nter www.fotoschwarm.de geht ab sofort eine neue, innovative Fotocommunity speziell für Fotowettbewerbe an den Start. Die neue Gemeinschaft basiert auf der seit vielen Jahren erfolgreichen Wettbewerbsseite colorfoto-creativ.de. Ziel von fotoschwarm ist es, den Usern neue Arten von Fotowettbewerben anzubieten wie von Usern selbst initiierte Wettbewerbe, Contests auf Zeit, Fotobuch-Wettbewerbe, Tutorials oder auch Team-Wettbewerbe. Fotoschwarm.de bietet den Community-Mitgliedern neben einem „klassischen“ Monatswettbewerb viele weitere Möglichkeiten, mit ihren Bildern attraktive Preise, Punkte und Publikationen in Magazinen zu gewinnen. Dazu gehören beispielsweise thematisch fokussierte Wettbewerbe wie „Sport+Dynamik“ oder „Natur+Makro“, aber auch Wettbewerbe, die spezielle Techniken beinhalten wie „Portrait im Studio“ oder „Kreative Bildbearbeitung“. Dabei zählt nicht das Einzelbild, sondern die gesamte Dramaturgie eines Bildbandes – von den Teilnehmern zusammengestellt und gestaltet.

September 2012 kommt das Magazin PhotoKlassik erstmals auf den Markt. Die viertel­ jährlich erscheinende Publikation versteht sich als Medium für aktuelle analoge Fotografie. Die Herausgeber, Wolfgang Heinen und Thomas Maschke, sehen seit einiger Zeit einen klaren Trend (wieder) hin zu den handwerklichen, analogen Bereichen der Fotografie – gerade auch bei jungen Zielgruppen.

Maschke, have been observing for some time a clear trend back (again) to the craft-based analogue areas of photography – particularly among young target groups.

In the first issue of PhotoKlassik, the scope and relevance of today’s analogue photography will be set out. The list of issues is very broad and runs from test reports and descriptions of experiences together with operating instructions and on to the principles of analogue photography.

Subjects in the first issue include: the only analogue SLR that can still be bought new, the Nikon F6, a comprehensive survey of all 35mm analogue cameras that are still available, as well as an appreciation of the Makina 67 – it is the star in the film „Palermo Shooting“ by Wim Wenders (leading role Campino, the singer of a song wellknown in Germany, The Dead Trousers“) – and is still highly regarded and used by many experts. In addition to describing many photographic processes, there are also practical working guides for those who would now like to invest in a darkroom. Not least, there is an article, which from the point of view of the theory of art, analyses the philosophy of Lomography.

It is appropriate that Photoklassik, in being true to itself at the basic level, will regularly describe in its pages the current products and processes that are still available.

PhotoKlassik appears four times a year and is available at German railway station bookstalls and kiosks, and also by subscription. Each issue of PhotoKlassik will have about 100 pages. It is printed on particularly high quality paper. The price for a single issue comprises 9.80 euros.

Global smartphone market growing The global smartphone market continues to witness significant growth, reaching almost 500 million units sold in 2011 and on track to grow more than 40 % in 2012, according to new research from Futuresource Consulting. ersonal penetration is expected to reach one in every two people in many developed markets, fuelled by the increasing importance of the device’s role in the consumer’s everyday life. Many factors have contributed to market growth, including the consumer’s desire to always be connected, strong operator and manufacturer marketing campaigns and continuous improvement in the range and quality of content and apps. These attributes will remain fundamental to securing growth moving forwards. Lower-priced devices, mostly powered by Android operating systems, are driving growth in the youth segment and are also crucial in the development of emerging markets, which are anticipated to account for 20 % of total smartphone sales in 2012.

Futuresource forecasts for this year predict that over 65 % of all smartphones sold in emerging markets will be new sales, with the remainder being replacement and upgrade. This ratio is likely to be reversed in developed markets where penetration is considerably higher.

The total installed base of mobile handsets, which includes smartphones and standard feature handsets, grew to more than 1.5 billion units in 2011, with handsets expected to top 1.6 billion in 2012. Despite a surge in smartphone sales, standard feature handsets still account

for over 50 % of all handsets, driven by low pricing and continued demand amongst certain demographic groups and emerging markets including India, MEA and Latin America. Even through to 2016, these devices will feature heavily, accounting for over a third of the total handset market.

DIGITAL CAMCORDERS The UK has established itself as the leading global market for smartphones in terms of penetration, with Futuresource forecasts indicating penetration of 70 % in 2012. Heavy operator and retail promotions, a wide availability and range of devices, and elevated gadget adoption have all contributed heavily to this healthy market landscape.

The USA also continues to witness strong performance across the smartphone market, driven by operator campaigns which emphasise superfast wireless broadband and 4G helping to increase personal penetration to almost 40 % in 2011. Sales are forecast to exceed 100 million in 2012, representing almost 70 % of total handset sales.

In Germany, demand for low-end devices remains strong and sim-only and sim-free markets are growing in significance. Double-digit smartphone growth is expected through to 2015, with penetration on track to exceed 50% in the latter half of 2012.

Economic uncertainty and shifts to longer contract lengths are putting a barrier on sales across other markets in Western Europe, particularly in Italy and Spain. Despite this, smartphone sales in Italy are expected to grow by

over 30 % in 2012, as Italy’s strong mobile culture remains a major influencer on the market.

Looking to brand performance, competition is intense across the broad spectrum of the smartphone market with the high-end segment leading the charge, where ‘hero’ handsets including Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy SIII dominate, and with Samsung’s Galaxy range spearheading growth in many countries worldwide.

Google’s Android operating system continues to grow at a fast pace and has been vital to the strong performance of the overall smartphone market over the past three years.

er Ausstellungsbereich photokina academy zählt seit 2006 zu den absoluten Highlights der photokina und wird dieses Jahr in alter Tradition wieder in Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie e.V. ausgerichtet. Auch zur photokina 2012 konnten sich wieder Hochschulen mit den Fachbereichen Fotografie und Design aus dem In- und Ausland um eine der 15 begehrten Standflächen von „photokina academy 2012“ bewerben. Das Motto der vierten „photokina academy“ lautete „un/sichtbar“. Fünf der 15 ausgewählten Hochschulen haben sich in diesem Jahr erstmals an der Ausschreibung beteiligt. Während der Messe tritt erneut eine Jury zusammen und ermittelt die besten Präsentationen des Jahres 2012. Das Preisgeld beträgt € 3000,- für den Sieger des Wettbewerbs und € 2000,- bzw. € 1000,- für die zwei Nächstplatzierten. Zur Verfügung gestellt wird das Preisgeld vom Photoindustrie-Verband e.V. Das Herzstück der „photokina academy“-Fläche ist eine zentrale Präsentationsplattform, auf der die Vertreter der Hochschulen mit ihren Beiträgen die Möglichkeit haben, sich dem Fachpublikum der photokina 2012 zu präsentieren. Am academy-Infostand der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie e.V. (DGPh) besteht zudem die Möglichkeit, die jeweiligen Studiengänge mittels Informationsmaterialen Publikationen vorzustellen. In Kooperation mit der photokina academy und der DGPh bietet darüber hinaus ZEIT

CAMPUS dem Fotografie-Nachwuchs unter dem Motto „Zeig uns Deine Mappe!“ am 19.9.2012 von 12 bis 14 Uhr eine kostenlose Mappensichtung an. In dem Zeitraum von 20. bis 23.9.2012 von jeweils 15 bis 17 Uhr finden weitere Mappensichtungen durch die DGPh statt.

Weltweit arbeitet Manfred Baumann mit internationalen Größen wie Sir Roger Moore, Gene Simmons, Kathleen Turner, Bruce Willis, Lionel Richie oder John Malkovich. Er ist wohl einer der außergewöhnlichsten Künstler dieser Zeit. Mit Vorbildern wie Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts und Alfred Eisenstaedt im Kopf, traut er sich an bisher unbekannte wie auch oftmals ungewöhnliche Bildideen heran und scheut sich nicht davor seinen Ideen und Vorstellungen freien Lauf zu lassen. Im Rahmen der photokina 2012 zeigt Manfred Baumann nicht nur seine brandneue Ausstellung VISION, sondern auch eine Reihe an interessanten Workshops. So zum Beispiel zu Themen wie Akt-, Portrait- oder Fashion -Fotografie. Die Besucher haben direkt am Stand B 070/D 067 in der Halle 9.1 die Möglichkeit sich für seine Workshops anzumelden, wobei die ersten 15 direkt auf der Bühne mitarbeiten können und alle weiteren zusehen dürfen, um sich vor Ort ihre Tipps von Manfred Baumann zu holen. Im Rahmen der photokina 2012 wird Manfred Baumann außerdem seinen brandneuen Kalender 2013 präsentiert und verschenkt im Zuge seiner Signierstunden täglich 30 Kalender an seine Fans.

he photokina academy exhibition area has been one of the absolute highlights of photokina since 2006. This year, it will once again be organised as a joint project with the DGPh (German Society for Photography). For photokina 2012, institutions of higher learning that offer programmes in photography and design — from Germany and abroad — can once again apply for one of the 15 coveted stand areas at “photokina academy 2012”.

The motto of the fourth photokina academy is “in/ visible”. Five of the 15 colleges and academies that have been selected this year are first time participants in the competition. During the fair, a jury will once again come together at photokina and select the best presentations for the year 2012. Prize money for the competition is € 3,000 for the winner, € 2,000 for second place and € 1,000 for third place. The prize money will be provided by the Photographic Industry Association.

The focal point of the “photokina academy” area will be the central presentation platform, where representatives of the participating institutions of higher learning can use their contributions to present themselves to photokina 2012 trade visitors.

At the DGPh academy information stand, participants will also have the opportunity to present informational materials about their various courses of study to the public. Additionally, on 19 September from 12 noon to 2 p.m. ZEIT CAMPUS, in cooperation with photokina academy and the DGPh, will be offering next generation photographers the chance to present their portfolios for a free viewing under the motto “Show us your portfolio”. The DGPh will be organizing further portfolio viewings between 3p.m. and 5p.m. each day from the 20 to 23 September.

He is one of the most unusual artists of our time. Taking photographers like Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts and Alfred Eisenstaedt as his inspiration, he dares to approach undiscovered and often unusual ideas for pictures and doesn’t hesitate to let his imagination take flight. Not only will Manfred Baumann present his brand new exhibition VISION at photokina 2012; he will also give a series of interesting workshops. These will be on a number of themes including portrait, fashion and nude photography. uf der Sonderfläche CGI wird die Technologie von Computer Generated Imaging mit Vortragsprogrammen, Ausstellungen und Leistungspräsentationen vorgestellt. Im Fokus der Messe steht CGI, da es die digitale professionelle Bildkommunikation maßgeblich bestimmen wird.

Das photokina CGI Solution Center wird Spitzenleistungen der digitalen Bildgestaltung präsentieren und das dazugehörige Know-how vermitteln.

Dabei gilt es auch, dem immer wieder vorgetragenen sorgenvollen Gedanken, dass es sich bei CGI um den „Hochverrat an der Fotografie“ handele, zu begegnen. Die zu erwartende, spannungsvolle Auseinandersetzung wird beweisen: CGI verdrängt die konventionelle Fotografie nicht. Dort, wo bei der Visualisierung die Loslösung vom realen Motiv verlangt wird, gehört den mit dem Computer generierten Bildern die Zukunft.

he technology for computer generated imaging will be presented in the form of lecture programmes, exhibitions and performance presentations in the CGI special area. CGI is a focal point for the trade fair as it is becoming a decisive factor in professional digital imaging communication.

The photokina CGI Solution Centre will present outstanding examples of digital image design and serve as a platform for disseminating know-how in this field. Here it will be possible to address a frequently expressed conjecture – namely that CGI is “high treason against photography”. The resulting discussion, which is sure to be very lively, will show that CGI isn’t supplanting conventional photography. The future belongs to computer generated images in those cases where a visualisation calls for a departure from real subject matter.

Hochwertige Ausdrucke sind nicht nur ein Thema für Galerien und Museen, sondern halten verstärkt Einzug in die eigenen vier Wände.

Welchen Einfluss unterschiedliche Drucker und Papiere auf das Endergebnis haben und wie sich das auf die Bildaussage auswirkt, das macht die photokina 2012 auf der Sonderfläche „photokina fine art – see me, feel me, print me“ in der Halle 2.2 erleb- und greifbar.

ein umfassendes Portfolio unterschiedlichster Papiere, die durch ihre unterschiedlichen Oberflächen die Wirkung eines Motivs deutlich beeinflussen. Das erkennen vermehrt auch die großen Fotodienstleister und nehmen die hochwertigen Fine-Art-Papiere für ihre Kunden auf, womit der Markt weiter wachsen wird.

Somit erschließt sich der Bereich Fine Art immer mehr auch dem Endkunden und ist nicht mehr nur dem ambitionierten und professionellen Fotografen vorbehalten.

Die technische Weiterentwicklung von FineArt-Papieren ist beeindruckend und garantiert dem Anwender noch mehr Optionen. So sind in den vergangenen Monaten neue Papiere auf den Markt gekommen, die mit neuer Beschichtung versehen sind und somit messbar deutlich größere Farbräume und Tiefen darstellen können. High-quality prints are no longer a theme for galleries and museums only; these days increasing numbers of consumers are buying them to grace their own four walls. At photokina exhibitors will show how various printers and types of paper influence the end results of a print and its message. This special area, called “photokina fine-art - see me, feel me, print me”, will be located in Hall 2.2.

of diverse types of paper which have a marked influence on the image due to the differences in their surface properties. Large photographic service providers are also increasingly recognizing this and offering their customers high-quality fine art papers - a development that will cause the market to grow even further. In this way, the fine art segment will open up more and more to end consumers and will no longer be reserved exclusively for professional photographers and ambitious amateurs.

The latest technical developments in fine art papers are impressive and are guaranteed to offer users even more options. For example, some of the new papers that have been introduced on the market in recent months have a new coating that brings about measurable improvements in the range and depth of colour. There is also a big demand for papers that have special artistic qualities but are still able to bond with an inkjet layer. Papers with classic deckle edges are particularly popular. And papers that are “splittable” are also enjoying increasing popularity.

This type of paper can be “split” after printing and the printed side can then be worked with further and, for example, used to cover books, lampshades, room dividers etc.

In Hall 2.2 at this year’s photokina, visitors will not only find a lot of information on this theme but will also be able to see and feel the differences personally and make direct comparisons between the various sorts of high-quality fine art papers. Visitors will also be able to directly observe the influence these differences have on their experience of a picture. uf der photokina 2008 präsentierte Susanna Kraus ihre weltweit einzige begehbare Kamera IMAGO1:1 zum ersten Mal seit ihrer Wiederbelebung nach einem fast 30-jährigen „Dornröschenschlaf“ erfolgreich dem Messe Publikum.

Zwei Jahre später, auf der photokina 2010, konnte IMAGO1:1 zusammen mit Harman Technology das von Ilford wieder hergestellte Direkt Positiv

Papier als neues Produkt auf dem immer kleiner werdenden analogen Markt präsentieren. Auf dem Stand konnte der Besucher sich von der Faszination der Bildentstehung mittels der Direktbelichtung verführen lassen. Auf der photokina 2012 werden am IMAGO Stand Loch-Kameras vorgestellt, die u. a. für das DPP und den analogen Fotomarkt entwickelt wurden. Die Design Akademie Berlin hat das Prinzip der IMAGO1:1 mit deren Studenten erforscht und schickt kreative Kamerakonzepte vom Kaffeebecher bis zum fotografierenden Schrank in Guerilla-Aktionen in die Stadt hinaus. Ergebnisse werden am Stand täglich neu gezeigt.

Two years later at photokina 2010, in collaboration with Harman Technology, IMAGO 1:1 presented the new direct positive paper, which Ilford once again produced as a new product for the small analogue market. At the stand visitors were able to experience the fascination of creating an image through direct exposure. The IMAGO 1:1 stand at photokina 2012 will present pinhole cameras, which have been developed for use with direct positive paper (DPP) and for the analogue photograph market. The Design Akademie Berlin has explored the principles of the ‘IMAGO1:1’ with its students and has taken their creative concepts for cameras — from coffee mugs to picture taking cabinets – to the streets of the city in “guerrilla actions”. Their results will be on display at the stand and will be updated every day.

2012 will be a mecca not only for p hotokina photography enthusiasts and professional

photographers but also for people from many other professions who use imaging products for their daily work. Among them are doctors, who have to deal with a wide variety of imaging techniques in their professions. In response, this year’s photokina will for the first time offer further training for doctors of all disciplines. The course is titled “Images of everyday life in medical science: Who is allowed to do what, and who needs what?”. It will feature presentations and discussions regarding medical imaging systems in the fields of science and research.

On Saturday, 22nd September 2012, seven speakers from a variety of medical disciplines, publishing companies and legal professions will address topics that will provide doctors and researchers who publish medical and scientific works with detailed insights into a wide range of publication processes. The symposium will be hosted by Dr. Karl-Heinz Krauskopf, senior physician at the Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Cardiovascular Anaesthesia unit, at the Helios Clinic in Wuppertal and a member of the Medical and Scientific Photography section of the German Society for Photography (DGPh).

The Medical Council has given the training course a five-point certification. Participation is free of charge. Doctors can register at www.photokina. com. The preliminary program is enclosed.

Einer davon sind Ärzte, die sich beruflich ebenfalls mit den unterschiedlichsten bildgebenden Verfahren beschäftigen. Aus diesem Grund wird im Rahmen der photokina erstmals eine Fortbildung angeboten, die sich an Ärzte aller Fachbereiche wendet. Unter dem Thema „Bilder aus dem medizinisch-wissenschaftlichen Alltag: wer darf was, wer braucht was?“ wird über die visuelle Darstellung der Medizin in Wissenschaft und Forschung referiert und diskutiert.

Am Samstag, den 22. September, werden sieben Referenten aus verschiedenen medizinischen Fachgebieten, dem Verlagswesen und dem Rechtsbereich Themen aufgreifen, die dem in Medizin und Wissenschaft publizierenden Arzt und Forscher grundlegende Einblicke in unterschiedlichste Publikationsprozesse geben. Geleitet wird das Symposium von Dr. med.

ur photokina 2012 mal eben von Berlin nach Konstanz schlendern oder von München mit nur wenigen Schritten nach Hamburg spazieren: die größte „begehbare“ Foto-Deutschland-Landkarte macht es möglich.

Mit Unterstützung der photokina realisierte die Lomographische Gesellschaft in Kooperation mit „Das Telefonbuch“ die beeindruckende Aktion. Ein 1000 qm großer „LomoFloor“ auf dem Bahnhofsvorplatz neben dem Kölner Dom in den Umrissen der Deutschlandkarte zeigt in über 150.000 Fotos die schönsten Plätze Deutschlands, die von Lomographen im Vorfeld der Aktion eingesandt wurden. Egal ob es eine weltberühmte Sehenswürdigkeit oder eine Ecke im eigenen Garten ist – die Bilder der LomoMap zeigen die persönlichen Lieblingsplätze der Teilnehmer – aufgenommen mit einer analogen Kamera! Die Aktion ist der Auftakt des LomoWorldMap-Projektes, das eine umfassende Darstellung einer riesigen Weltkarte durch analoge Fotos zum Ziel hat und in den kommenden Monaten nach der photokina weltweit auf Tournee gehen soll.

isitors to photokina 2012 will be able to take a pleasant stroll from Berlin to Konstanz or reach Munich from Hamburg in just a few steps. This became possible by the biggest-ever walk-on photo map of Germany. With the assistance of photokina and Das Telefonbuch, the Lomographic Society has set up this impressive work. The 1,000 m² “LomoFloor” map is located in front of Cologne’s main train station and next to the cathedral. Within the contours of Germany, it shows more than 150,000 photos of Germany’s most beautiful places, which lomographers have sent to the organizers in the runup to the event. Whether the pictures show world-famous sights or a corner of a private garden, all of the photos in the LomoMap will depict the participants’ favorite haunts – photographed with analog cameras! The event will kick off the LomoWorldMap project, which aims to create a comprehensive world map made up of analog photos. It will go on a worldwide tour in the months following photokina.
