Essential Oils

Loving yourself is not being selfish!

New Wellness Center opening in Downtown Nashville LIVE + BREATHE is to launch its new ‘urban wellness house’ in The Gulch Nashville. With a projected opening in Summer 2019, Live + Breathe will operate at 905 Gleaves Street. Live + Breathe claim to be “Nashville’s new, urban sanctuary where wellness lives, unscripted”. In addition say LAB they’ll be a “pop-up studio offering an array of workout classes, meditation rooms, state-of-the-art locker rooms featuring: infrared sauna, steam room, spa, rain shower, private lockers, indoor, outdoor relaxation areas, including sanctuary room, courtyard, sunroom”. Lynette Nelson one of the partners at New Vintage Capital Partners, LLC., and a co founder of Live + Breathe Nashville chose Nashville because: ”we have watched Nashville grow and develop a sophisticated and informed culture of a wellness lifestyle, green sustainable product and services awareness coupled with the already

Our regular writer Sheila McGinnis, suggests some ways to treat yourself and sample the delights of Essential oils.

e’re always giving to others and that’s great! We hear often “it’s better to give than to receive,” and that’s a true statement, but how do we “treat others as we would treat ourselves” if we don’t treat ourselves? Below are some ways you can LOVE yourself, as well as sharing these ways with your loved ones. Take a long soak in a warm tub with Epsom salt and 5 drops of lavender, candles, relaxing music playing in the background, add a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your door. Don’t have a tub? Then try a foot soak. Make a batch of herbal foot soak for yourself and extra to share with your loved ones. Here is a simple and beautiful recipe: 2 cups of Epsom salt, 6 drops of lavender essential oil, 5 drops of peppermint essential oil, 2 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, add 1 teaspoon of dried mint and 1 teaspoon of dried calendula petals. Mix together and put into a pretty jar. Add about half a cup of mix into a tub or pan that fit your feet, and add warm water (go ahead and make a cup of herbal tea or a glass of wine while you’re relaxing). Lotion bars are a great way to moisturize our body, but these can get expensive! Here’s a recipe you can make at home. You will need these ingredients: 1/3 cup of Coconut oil (buy organic..you’re worth it), 1/3 cup of cocoa butter or shea butter, 1/3 cup of beeswax and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional). Fill a pan with enough water to go half-way up a mason jar or another glass type container. Bring water to a gentle boil. Add the ingredients (minus the essential oil) and stir until completely melted. Once its melted remove from heat and stir in your essential oil (this is where you can get creative if you like by adding dried herbs or petals to make a pretty bar-but honestly I just prefer the lotions bar without it). Pour into molds if you have, but if not just use what I do-silicone muffin cups. Allow to dry and rub on elbows, hands, feet, or anywhere you need to moisturize. Go on a guided hike or tour a local museum. Tennessee has so many options. Rent a movie. Diffuse some “love” in the air by adding 5 drops of Ylangylang essential oil, 3 drops of Patchouli, and 3 drops of Wild Orange, put on something comfy, and by all means TURN THE PHONE OFF! Go get a massage!!!!! Still having a hard time loving yourself? May I suggest hiring a coach or go to a counselor who can lead you to “finding why you deserve to be loved.” These are just a handful of ideas. You truly are worth caring and loving on yourself and when you do you’ll feel rejuvenated and cared for so that you are able to continue to love on others.

existence of successful individuals who have supported and contributed to the epicurean scene here”. She added, “We think that a semi-private club of these like minded people will enjoy a place such as LAB with similar sentiments and commitments to a clean healthy lifestyle or as I put it ..”a place to go bye bye!” For more membership information call (615) 601-1546.

Alternative ways to quit smoking

Nutrition for a Healthy Life

If you want to kick the smoking habit, certain complementary health approaches may help you reach your goal. Current evidence suggests that mindfulness meditation-based programs, yoga, and relaxation techniques (guided imagery or progressive muscle relaxation) may help people quit smoking. These approaches are generally considered safe for healthy people when they’re performed appropriately. For other complementary approaches, the evidence is less favorable. Although acupuncture might help people stop smoking for short periods, there’s no consistent evidence that it helps them quit permanently. Studies

Old Fashioned Home Remedies By Karina Hammer, Certified Holistic Wellness Coach

Common Cold

Turning to home remedies at the onset of a cold or flu could reduce the symptoms and shorten the duration of your illness. Everyone you ask will have their own cold remedies that they’ll recommend; raw or manuka honey, elderberry syrup, and chicken soup are some of the most common. Garlic is something that has multiple medicinal properties, it is antibacterial and antiviral. It’s also an expectorant that helps you cough up phlegm. Consuming garlic gives your immune system a boost, opens the respiratory systems, and flushes toxins out of your body. Garlic has the most antibacterial and antiviral properties when consumed freshly crushed, chopped or chewed. There are several ways to take garlic for a common cold. Mix one crushed garlic clove, two teaspoons lemon juice, one teaspoon honey, and ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper. Consume until your symptoms decrease. You can boil several chopped garlic cloves in a cup of water. Then, drink it several times a day mixed with honey. If consuming garlic isn’t your cup of tea, garlic supplements are available at most stores. It makes taking garlic just a bit easier!

Stomach pain

Abdominal pain can be crampy, achy, dull, intermittent or sharp. It’s also called a stomachache. Since ancient times, people have turned to ginger as a cure-all for everything from pain to nausea. It’s not just an old wives’ tale, either. Studies have shown that ginger can be a very effective treatment for stomach pain and even nausea.

1. Heroin. Experts ranked heroin as the most addictive drug, giving it a score of 3 out of a maximum score of 3. Heroin is an opiate that causes the level of dopamine in the brain’s reward system to increase by up to 200% in experimental animals. In addition to being arguably the most addictive drug, heroin is dangerous, too, because the dose that can cause death is only five times greater than the dose required for a high. Heroin also has been rated as the second most harmful drug in terms of damage to both users and to society. 2. Cocaine directly interferes with the brain’s use of dopamine to convey messages from one neuron to another. In essence, cocaine prevents neurons from turning the dopamine signal off, resulting in an abnormal activation of the brain’s reward pathways. It is estimated that between 14 million and 20m people worldwide use cocaine. Crack cocaine has been ranked by experts as being the third most damaging drug and powdered cocaine, which causes a milder high, as the fifth most damaging. About 21% of people who try cocaine will become dependent on it at sometime in their life. 3. Nicotine in e-cigs, tobacco linked to heart disease. Nicotine is the main addictive ingredient of tobacco. When somebody smokes a cigarette, nicotine is rapidly absorbed by the lungs and delivered to the brain.

Headache

One of the major causes for headaches is dehydration. In fact, studies have demonstrated that chronic dehydration is a common cause of tension headaches and migraines. Thankfully, something as simple as drinking water has been shown to relieve headache symptoms in as little as 30 minutes. What’s more, being dehydrated can impair concentration and cause irritability, making your symptoms seem even worse. To help avoid dehydration headaches, use this time tested old fashioned remedy and focus on drinking enough water throughout the day. Staying hydrated can help prevent headaches as well.

Apart from cooking with turmeric, there are some easy ways to consume turmeric. Golden milk, smoothies, or you can take a supplement if you need it to be more concentrated.

Suffering joint aches and pains? Consider trying this pain-fighting home remedy for natural arthritis pain relief. Traditionally used in Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine, Turmeric reduces pain, inflammation and stiffness related to joint pain. It is a strong and natural anti-inflammatory agent with activity comparable to NSAIDs. It is a natural painkiller that relieves joint pain, fibromyalgia and other disorders characterized by pain and inflammation. Not only is it time tested, but there are hundreds of published studies on the use of this old fashioned spice.

The 5 most addictive substances

A natural anti-inflammatory and broad spectrum digestive enzyme, ginger is available in many forms, all of which can help. Ginger chews and supplements are easy to take, while other people prefer their ginger in beverage form. Try an all-natural ginger ale, ginger shots at your local juice bar, or chop up some fresh ginger root and make a tea. Pickled ginger is one of my favorite ways to consume ginger.

Joint pain

of hypnosis for smoking cessation have had conflicting results. And there’s no current evidence that certain dietary supplements can help people quit smoking. If you’re considering a dietary supplement, remember that “natural” does not necessarily mean “safe.” Some supplements may have side effects, and some may interact with drugs or other supplements. Conventional quit-smoking treatments – counseling and medication – may help you succeed. You can also get evidence-based quit-smoking advice and tools, including apps and a text messaging program, at the National Cancer Institute’s site smokefree.gov.

More than two-thirds of Americans who tried smoking reported becoming dependent during their life. In 2002 the WHO estimated there were more than 1bn smokers and it has been estimated that tobacco will kill more than 8m people annually by 2030. 4. Barbiturates (“downers”) – also known as blue bullets, gorillas, nembies, barbs and pink ladies – are a class of drugs that were initially used to treat anxiety and to induce sleep. They interfere with chemical signaling in the brain, the effect of which is to shut down various brain regions. Barbiturate dependence was common when the drugs were easily available by prescription, but this has declined dramatically as other drugs have replaced them. 5. Alcohol has many effects on the brain, but in laboratory experiments on animals it increased dopamine levels in the brain’s reward system by 40% to 360% -- and the more the animals drank the more dopamine levels increased. No amount of alcohol is good for your overall health, global study says Some 22% of people who have taken a drink will develop dependence on alcohol at some point during their life. How singing led to a career in Nutrition

PERSONAL ADVICE: ASK DR. LISA

Love makes you crazy! We have all felt it—our heart jump when we get a call or text from someone we are interested in, our breath and heart rate quicken when we are romantically interested in someone and they reciprocate…. In short, when we feel ‘in luuve” with someone.

W

hen you fall in love, it does some insane things to you. Sound irrational? Well, technically, it is. Being “stuck by Cupid’s arrow” may take your breath away and make your heart go pitter-patter report sexual wellness specialists at Loyola University Health System. Here are just five of the bizarre things that happen to your brain when you fall in love:

expect to feel anxious, right? Actually, you don’t. Researchers at University College London found that when you fall in love your amygdala and other parts of your brain deactivate. What that means is the alarm system in your brain that registers anxiety is in hiatus, and you feel alive and energized without a care in the world.

1. You become obsessed.

It’s been said throughout the ages that “love is blind.” Really love makes you function as is your brain is damaged. The researchers at University College London found that not only does your amygdala deactivate, but your ventromedial prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain that’s responsible for critical judgment, checks out and takes a vacation. This is part of why people in love seem “spacy” and disconnected with reality, because they are! And finally...

Most people will tell you that they’re happy when they fall in love and MRI scans indicate that love lights up the pleasure center of the brain. But that’s impossible. Research shows that serotonin (the happiness hormone) actually plummets when he or she falls in love. One physician discovered that when you fall in love, your serotonin level can fall to the level of someone with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). In other words, you’re not happy—you’re obsessed. That’s why you, or your teenager, can’t stop looking at the phone awaiting a call or a text.

2. Cortisol and other hormone levels go haywire.

Research also found that at the same time your serotonin drops, your cortisol is rising. Cortisol is a stress hormone that prepares your body for “fight or flight.” High levels can make you feel energized. That’s why someone in love feels they have “butterflies in their stomach” and have a difficult time sleeping or eating. When your stress hormones skyrocket it becomes difficult to digest or rest. Dopamine creates feelings of euphoria while adrenaline and norepinephrine are responsible for the pitter-patter of the heart, restlessness and overall preoccupation that go along with experiencing love.

3. Anxiety decreases.

Now, here’s the weird part. With your cortisol at super-high levels, you would

4. You lose your judgment.

5. Love makes you “get stupid.”

As if the first four symptoms weren’t aren’t enough, researchers at Leiden University in the Netherlands discovered that you actually lose cognitive function when you fall in love. That’s right, you actually lose some intellectual functions processes that allow you to perceive and comprehend ideas.

tour, her music label teamed up with a nutritionist and personal trainer. “As I watched my body and my voice grow stronger, I was amazed by the benefits of taking care of myself, not to mention eating kale was making my voice stronger. Who knew?! The tips, tricks and techniques I learned were far beyond just ‘buffing up.’” Lori says. The years she spent singing in California were where Lori’s love of all things fitness meets nutrition began. Drawing from her newfound realization and years of experience, Lori began to formulate her own method of training – one that took into account all aspects of the body and how they function together. From this, she created The Life By Lori Z, a onestop virtual wellness shop. Lori recently launched what she calls, The ANTI-Diet in which the focus is not on ditching the chips and pizza but rather becoming more aware of anti-inflammatory foods and creating overall gut health one recipe at a time. Nearly 11% of Americans have Allergies New research suggests that at least 10.8% (or 26m people) of US adults are food allergic, but nearly 19% of adults believe that they have a food allergy. Which means half of those who think they have Allergies-don’t. The 5 most common food allergies reported among adults were shellfish, peanuts, milk, tree nuts and fish. Roughly half of adults with food allergies reported having a physiciandiagnosed food allergy. Individuals with peanut allergy reported the highest rate of physician diagnosis. Glyphosate and other toxic chemicals detected in French diapers In a study said to be the first of its kind worldwide, French health agency Anses has found potentially dangerous chemicals in disposable diapers. The substances they discovered include glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller, BBC News reported. Anses said it “detected a number of hazardous chemicals in disposable diapers that could migrate through urine, for example, and enter into prolonged contact with babies’ skin.” Some of the chemicals were found at levels above safety limits while others, like glyphosate, were found at lower levels. The report was based on tests of 23 samples of diapers on sale in France

between 2016 and 2018, including brands billed as “ecological”. The agency did not name specific brands, but said the tests were representative of the market as a whole. Some French diaper brands are also sold in other countries. The study found 60 chemicals in all, some of which have been banned in the EU for more than 15 years, British newspaper, The Guardian reported. Anses also said that some exceeded limits for safe exposure based on a “realistic” use estimate of 4,000 diapers for a child during their first three years of life. 6 tips when choosing a complementary health practitioner If you’re looking for a complementary health practitioner to help treat a medical problem, it is important to be as careful and thorough in your search as you are when looking for conventional care. Here are some tips to help you in your search: 1. If you need names of practitioners in your area, first check with your doctor or other health care provider. A nearby hospital or medical school, professional organizations, state regulatory agencies or licensing boards, or even your health insurance provider may be helpful. Try also looking at the Service Provider listings at: www. healthandwellnessnashville.com 2. Find out as much as you can about any potential practitioner, including education, training, licensing, and certifications. The credentials required for complementary health practitioners vary tremendously from state to state and from discipline to discipline. 3. Find out whether the practitioner is willing to work together with your conventional health care providers. For

safe, coordinated care, it’s important for all of the professionals involved in your health to communicate and cooperate. 4. Explain all of your health conditions to the practitioner, and find out about the practitioner’s training and experience in working with people who have your conditions. Choose a practitioner who understands how to work with people with your specific needs, even if general well-being is your goal. 5. Don’t assume that your health insurance will cover the practitioner’s services. Contact your health insurance provider and ask. Insurance plans differ greatly in what complementary health approaches they cover, and even if they cover a particular approach, restrictions may apply. 6. Tell all your health care providers about the complementary approaches you use and about all practitioners who are treating you. Keeping your health care providers fully informed helps you to stay in control and effectively manage your health. Source: nccih.nih.gov

Managing Food and Mood By Kristen Pardue – The Dietetic Internship Program at Vanderbilt

Health & Wellness Magazine is delighted to partner with the long established Local Table Magazine-pioneers in informing people about local producers, farms and all things healthy eating. Each month we’ll be reprinting one of their articles. Their website www.localtable.net is a fund of information, please take a few minutes to look through their current and archived articles.

H

ow do you respond to a bad mood or a stressful situation? If you responded “grab something to eat,” then we have something in common! My name is Kristen and I’m a twenty something health professional who is newly married and starting a career as a dietitian. Staying healthy means taking care of myself every day: being active and making smart food choices. I look for ways to respond to stress that won’t make me feel guilty the next day! Enjoy these tips for managing food and mood! “Stress hormones have an arch enemy: omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in salmon, tuna, and mackerel. They also protect against heart disease.” The key to managing food and mood is putting the right foods in your mouth, which can actually calm you down. Over time stress can increase your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity. Check out these FIVE smart foods to decrease stress and reduce the damage that chronic pressure puts on your body.

Oatmeal: A bowl of warm oatmeal is a comfort food that causes your brain to produce more serotonin, a calming brain chemical. “Because thick, hearty oatmeal is high in fiber, few things take longer for your stomach to digest,” says Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D., author of Food & Mood. Other complex carbohydrates such as whole-grain breakfast cereals, breads, and pastas can help you feel balanced by stabilizing blood sugar levels.

Almonds, pistachios, and walnuts are loaded with vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps the immune system. Almonds also contain B vitamins, which help your body during unpleasant events. A 2007 Penn State study led by Dr. West found that eating one and a half ounces (about a handful) of pistachios a day lowers blood pressure so your heart doesn’t have to work overtime. “Walnuts have also been found to lower blood pressure, both at rest and under stress,” West says. Start today by adding a handful of these nuts to oatmeal, salads, or cereal.

Fatty Fish: Stress hormones have an arch enemy: omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in salmon, tuna, and mackerel. They also protect against heart disease. Avocados are packed full of potassium; half of one contains more potassium than a banana! According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, one of the best ways to reduce high blood pressure is to get enough potassium. Spinach contains magnesium, which also lowers your stress levels. According to studies performed by Harvard Medical School and USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, the lack of magnesium can cause migraine headaches and make you feel tired. One cup of spinach provides 40% of your recommended daily value.

Future Trends

Future Trends in Health and Wellness (part 3)

T

his is our final installment of how developments in research and technology will shape the way we live in the future, how our health can be improved, our illnesses treated and how some health problems may become a thing of the past.

Pain Management According to the National Center for Health Statistics (2006), approximately 76.2 million, one in every four Americans, have suffered from pain that lasts longer than 24 hours and millions more suffer from acute pain. Chronic pain is the most common cause of long-term disability. Pain management is a branch of medicine that applies science to the reduction of pain. It covers a wide spectrum of conditions including neuropathic pain, sciatica, postoperative pain and more. Pain management is a rapidly growing medical specialty that takes a multi-disciplinary approach to treating all kinds of pain. Overuse of highly addictive opioids has led to a health crisis across the world, especially in the US where more than 60,000 people died after overdoses in 2016 alone; president Donald Trump has declared the epidemic a public health emergency. As 2019 approaches, here are some non-addictive opioid alternatives to keep in mind for the future of pain management: Stem cell therapy. This is among the newest innovations in the management of chronic pain and degenerative disease, and offers the most promising outlook in terms of success and prognosis. The technique of stem cell extraction is easy and can be done onsite. Patient recovery time is minimal, pain relief is prompt, and complications are comparatively low. Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil. CBD is used by some people with chronic pain. CBD oil may reduce pain, inflammation, and overall discomfort related to a variety of health conditions. Studies on CBD oil and pain management have shown a great deal of promise. CBD can offer an alternative for people who have chronic pain and rely on more dangerous, habit-forming medications like opioids. But there needs to be more research in order to verify the pain-relieving benefits of CBD oil. CBD Oil is not yet approved by the FDA.

Parkinson’s Disease Nearly one million will be living with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in the U.S. by 2020, which is more than the combined number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig’s disease (or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Approximately 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with PD each year. More than 10 million people worldwide are living with PD. Incidence of Parkinson’s disease increases with age, but an estimated four percent of people with PD are diagnosed before age 50. Men are 1.5 times more likely to have Parkinson’s disease than women. While there’s no cure for Parkinson’s disease, recent research has led to improved treatments. Scientists and doctors are working together to find a treatment or prevention technique. Research is also seeking to understand who is more likely to develop the disease. In addition, scientists are studying the genetic and environmental factors that increase the chance of a diagnosis. Be on the lookout for advances in: Deep brain stimulation. In June 2015, the FDA approved the Brio Neurostimulation System. This implantable device helps reduce symptoms by generating small electrical pulses throughout the body. Gene therapy. Researchers haven’t yet found a sure way to cure Parkinson’s, slow its progression, or reverse the brain damage it causes. Gene therapy has the potential to do all three. Several studies have found that gene therapy can be a safe and effective treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Neuroprotective therapy. Researchers are currently working on developing neuroprotective therapies. This type of therapy could help stop the progression of the disease and prevent symptoms from getting worse. Biomarker. Researchers are also hoping to discover a biomarker (a cell or gene) that will lead to more effective treatments. Neural transplantation. Repairing the brain cells lost from Parkinson’s disease is a promising area of future treatment. Until a cure for Parkinson’s disease is discovered, medications, therapies, and lifestyle changes can help those with the condition live a better life.

Period Power Once a taboo subject, ‘Period talk’ has become a popular topic of conversation. Women are more open, conscious, and vocal about their periods and bodies than ever before—cue organic tampon brands like Cora and LOLA, cycle-tracking apps like Clue, and innovative products like Lunette’s menstrual cup entering the market and gaining prestige. Natural and organic tampons are made from non-genetically modified and certified organic cotton. They are free from dyes, rayon, fragrances, and all other risks that accompany rayon. Certified organic cotton and chlorine-free tampons reduce the number of chlorinated toxins and pesticides in the environment and help keep these toxins out of the body. 12

Future Trends

In her book Period Power, PERIOD founder and Harvard College student Nadya Okamoto offers a manifesto on menstruation and why we can no longer silence those who bleed—and how to engage in youth activism. Period Power aims to explain what menstruation is, shed light on the stigmas and resulting biases, and create a strategy to end the silence and prompt conversation about periods. All in all, rising demand for biodegradable products are continuing to emerge as a key trend in the global natural and organic tampons market.

Pet food that’s as healthy as yours Gone are the days of either dry or tinned pet food containing the unhealthy dregs and leftovers from human food processing. Pet owners are involved concerning the health and luxury of their dogs and cats that urges them to pay more on highend food product to extend their life expectancy and avoid age-associated issues. The market is witnessing vital growth because of rising endorsements of veterinary supplements for maintaining the pet health. The Pet Food Market is expected to exceed more than $8.21 Billion by 2024. The pet food market’s consumer landscape is changing, with the organic pet food industry trending toward younger, informed consumers. Nearly three-quarters (69%) of millennial pet owners are more likely to consider foods whose recipes use naturally-made ingredients over “normal,” mass-produced foods, versus fewer than half (44%) of owners over 35.

Precision Medicine Initiative The Cures Act, is a law designed to help accelerate medical product development and bring new innovations and advances to patients who need them faster and more efficiently. Funded at $1.45 bn the Precision Medicine Initiative is a long-term research effort among NIH and other research centers to understand how an individual’s genetics, lifestyle, and environment can impact disease prevention and treatment decisions. Look for the Precision Medicine Initiative to play a key role in the shift to patient-centered, value-based healthcare. As precision medicine evolves to allow treatments and interventions targeted specifically to a particular individual’s genetic makeup and environment, healthcare outcomes overall should improve. At the same time, treatments judged likely to be ineffective based on a particular individual’s genomic and environmental factors will be discarded as an option in favor of those more likely to achieve the desired result, meaning cost of care should be reduced.

Pili Nuts Pili – pronounced “peeley” – is a distinctive, tear-shaped nut native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands. Beyond being delicious, the nut is also a nutritional powerhouse, taking the win for the highest magnesium content of any nut. A single ounce contains 86 milligrams of magnesium, or 20% of the recommended daily intake for adults. The 2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey revealed that 56%t of Americans are magnesium-deficient. Low levels of the electrolyte, which is necessary for proper muscle and nerve function, has been linked to insomnia, heart-beat irregularities, hypertension, and muscle spasms and cramps. Multiple studies, have found that magnesium deficiency can also accelerate the aging process as it aids cellular senescence, a change in cell state that occurs when cells cease to divide or renew. The easiest way to find Pili nuts is online via https://eatpilinuts.com/ or on Amazon.

Printed Drugs

Imagine a future where patients with multiple chronic conditions no longer have to take numerous drugs several times a day – instead they can take one tablet containing all the required medications, once-daily, thanks to 3D printing. The ability of 3D printing to produce medications to exact specifications tailored to the needs of individual patients has led some observers to predict the advent of more precision and personalized medicines. The main objective and one of the biggest benefits of 3D printed drugs is how they will be able to be constructed with an individual’s specific requirements in mind, and even created in line with certain preferences. Factors like the size, dose, appearance and rate of delivery of a drug can be controlled. It can print tablets which aid swallowing, have different release rates and possess taste and appearances acceptable to children, thus improving adherence. For example, a pyramidal shaped tablet will be absorbed quicker than a cylindrical one. Another advantage is that tablets can be printed to contain several active ingredients, with the dosage of each medicine personalized to the patient’s age, gender, race, weight, genetic makeup and biochemical profiles. Individualized dosing may reduce adverse events, especially for medicines with narrow therapeutic index. We may never do away with the need for the corner pharmacy to fill prescriptions, but 3D printers could fundamentally change the way patients take certain types of medicine.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Out of every 100,000 people, 41 are diagnosed with RA every year. About 1.3 million Americans have RA. Women are about two to three times more likely to get RA than men. Hormones in both genders may play a role in either preventing or triggering it. RA generally starts between the ages of 30 and 60 in women and somewhat later in life in men. The lifetime risk of developing RA is 3.6 percent for women and 1.7 percent for men. However, RA can strike at any age – even small children can get it. Scientists are bringing precision medicine to rheumatoid arthritis for the first time by using genetic profiling of joint tissue to see which drugs will work for which patients, reports a new Northwestern Medicine multi-site study. “Now we can start to predict which drugs a patient will respond to,” said cosenior author Harris Perlman, chief of rheumatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “We can truly do precision medicine for rheumatoid arthritis. I believe this could be game changing. “ “The idea is to develop gene sequences to predict whether a patient will respond or not,” Perlman said. “Our goal is that this procedure will become the standard of care of for all patients with rheumatoid arthritis.”

Social Media Backlash Big technology is the next big tobacco. New research shows that those who spend more time on social media feel less socially fulfilled, and the more platforms we are on, the more stressed out we become. Smartphone addiction, which is currently a hot topic on Google trends, has a dark side. There’s been a cascade of brand-new research and concern about how tech, which is designed to grab and keep our attention, could be affecting our brains. Research has found that young people are especially susceptible to changes in brain chemistry, which can lead to increased drowsiness, anxiety, and may be linked to the tragic increase in teenage depression and suicides lately.

Making time to unplug is a higher priority than ever before, and places that help us put our phones down are popping up everywhere. Some restaurants are serving up discounts if you power down, for example, and others are mandating that datenight dinners be phone-free only and even some smoothie bars kindly forbid your devices and want to inspire you to “reconnect as a community, away from social networks.”

Hotels may now actually brag about not having WiFi: Everywhere from Camp Grounded in Mendocino, CA, whose motto is “disconnect to reconnect” to Villa Stephanie in Baden-Baden, Germany (the famous spa town) – which blocks all WiFi signals from your room by embedding copper plates in the walls to prevent your boss’ emails from reaching you on vacation – to the Mandarin Hotel Las Vegas’ ‘digital wellness escape”. Want to go where no cell towers can reach you? A new glamping startup called Hipcamp can find you an off-the-grid place, a la Airbnb.

Skin Care A new wave of skin-care products is protecting us from the tech world and pollution.Think “skin-barriersupporting” and “microbiome-enhancing” serums that help fuel optimal skin function and, of course, a healthy glow. Beauty brands are rising to the occasion with new products designed to nourish and support this important ecosystem of the skin, says Cindy DiPrima Morisse, co-founder of CAP Beauty. “Instead of stripping away layers of the skin, products are helping build up its own defenses.” Launches from companies like Marie Veronique, Biossance, Allies of Skin, and microbiome-protecting Mother Dirt are anticipating the environmental stressors your skin might encounter over the day, and the imbalances they could cause. They’re using ingredients like lipids, ceramides, adaptogens, and even live bacteria to help fortify your skin’s natural functioning, so it can do its thing – and be your first natural line of defense against technology and the pollutants of the modern world.

Strength Training According to ClassPass’ report, the most popular physical activity overall during 2018 was strength training. If you want to try strength training in 2019, you don’t have to pick up a single weight (if you don’t want to, that is). “Building muscle doesn’t require complicated and expensive equipment,” Dr. Shaun Kennedy, a general medicine and nutrition doctor at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Medical Center, told Elite Daily back in October. “Significant muscle gains can be achieved at home using no more than your own bodyweight.” In addition, according to Forbes Magazine, fitness is going to become more personalized. One way is through fitness regimes that are based on taking specialist recordings of your body via high tech machines based in state-of-the-art gyms. This uses various forms of technology to capture the state and potential of your health and then puts this to a group of highly-skilled personal trainers to create a program unique to you. A less expensive and more accessible way of personalized fitness that is growing in popularity is through genetic insight, via DNA testing. By measuring your vitals from inside your body, as opposed to superficially with sensors, testing your DNA and looking at your genetic code can give you a more accurate insight into the state of your health. The idea is, once you’ve had a test you can see, genetically, where your weaknesses are and more useful recommendations about how to improve this can then be forged. 14

Tabata

Short, yet challenging workouts are the name of the game in 2019, according to an ACSM fitness trends survey. At its most basic, Tabata training is a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout, featuring exercises that last four minutes. It was developed in Tokyo by Dr. Izumi Tabata, at the National institute of Fitness and Sports, and was used to train Olympian speed skaters at after it was seen how effective it was for not only their aerobic, but anaerobic fitness, it has since been taken up, with a few adjustments, by fitness geeks. This form of high-intensity interval training has more impact on both the aerobic and anaerobic systems. Add this to your fitness regime to feel the burn, save some time and take advantage of its awesome health benefits!

Team-Based Workouts When it comes to fitness, there’s some truth to the old adage ‘strength in numbers.’ According to ACSM’s survey of the top fitness trends in 2019, these types of workouts will definitely be trendy come the new year.. “Group activity may not be a new concept but it has certainly seen massive international up-trends over the last twenty years with rapidly rising numbers in spin cycling, aerobic and dance-based classes and the emergence of CrossFit and its tribe mentality,” says Rob McGillivray, personal trainer and founder of RETROFIT. “When we work out with other people we can gain a sense of camaraderie, because everyone is there for the same purpose,” agrees Davina Wong, Master Trainer at Club Pilates. “The people you see each week in a group class eventually become your family and want to see you back each week creating accountability.” There’s a bond that is created when a group struggles, sweats, fights and grinds their way through a tough workout. And once that group workout is scheduled into your calendar, with other people banking on you showing up, it’s a whole lot harder to hit snooze a second time and roll back over.

Tele medicine From cycle-tracking apps and birth control-delivery services to at-home STI testing, the reproductive health space is being disrupted by women-founded startups focused on getting health access into the hands of women – and out of the hands of politicians. Take Maven, whose digital-first approach provides around-the-clock access to health-care pros – without that interminable wait on the exam table. Meanwhile, Eve Kit and SmartJane allow you to screen for STIs (including HPV) from your own bathroom, and delivery services like Nurx and Prjkt Ruby bring birth control right to your doorstep. The common (disruptive) denominator? They’re affordable services that don’t require health insurance. Tech is also getting smart about your period. Women’s health expert and Well+Good Council member Alisa Vitti’s period – and hormone-tracking

The Whole30

app MyFLO shows you how getting in sync with your cycle can help you operate at peak levels all month long, allowing you to plan your productivity as well as your fertility. NextGen Jane wants to get real up close and personal with your flow – it’s developing a “smart tampon” that aims to prevent disease by tracking your biological changes.

The Wellness Kitchen

The Wellness Kitchen is a new trend poised to transform the most popular room in our home into a better reflection of ourselves. Instead of serving as a relic of the past, our kitchens will use advancements in technology and design to foster a healthier lifestyle for our bodies, our minds, and our planet. Because just like the food it contains, the Wellness Kitchen doesn’t merely feed – it nourishes. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that consumer spending on organically produced goods continued to show doubledigit growth with organic foods now available in three out of four conventional grocery stores in the U.S. The USDA also noted that mainstream consumers increasingly prefer organically produced food,

largely due to concerns about their health, the environment, and animal welfare. And, while organic goods typically cost more than foods grown with chemicals and fertilizers, consumers don’t mind paying more for these products. Among organic foods, fresh fruits and vegetables are the top selling category, with produce accounting for 43 percent of organic food sales. More people are also growing their own food at home or in community gardens (35% of all households in America in 2014). The largest increase has been in younger households, up 63% to 13 million since 2008. In short, counting calories is out and all-natural nutrients are in. Unfortunately, traditional refrigerators and dark cupboards and pantries are often designed to store pre-packaged, non-living foods. That’s why consumers will look for new solutions in the future. Simply put, people care more about the freshness and quality of their food, and our kitchens will increasingly be designed to store and even showcase fresh, organic products. Much like the organic food itself, Wellness Kitchens are an investment in one’s health. And it’s not just about food. The Wellness Kitchen encompasses all the other non edible products you but-from Soap to Paint, Cutlery to Paper Towels. The Wellness Kitchen of the future will look be healthy and eco friendly. 16

The Whole30 is a 30-day food plan meant to change your relationship with food. But the program, which was developed in 2009, requires a huge dose of willpower and a lot of meal prep. It involves cutting out sugar (except fruit), dairy, legumes, and booze for 30 days. There’s no counting macros, calories, or anything else on Whole30, and while you’re encouraged to eat until you’re full, there are no restrictions on how much you can eat. You’ll mainly be eating vegetables and fruits, with a moderate amount of organic, sustainably and ethically raised meat, eggs, fish, and nuts – and hardly anything from a package. Despite worldwide health officials shunning the diet with claims that it is restrictive and extreme, the eating plan continues to take the nutrition sector by storm, with many hybrid versions of diet hitting the mainstream, too. Thanks to hundreds and thousands of before and after pictures and Whole30 affiliated food blogger accounts on Instagrams, Whole30 is sure to stick around for years to come.

Vitamin Drips Vitamin Drips are the next big thing in beauty. According to Lily Kunin, wellness expert, Well+Good Council member, and founder of new health hotspot Clean Market in New York, IV drips are being administered as a quick way to get a skin boost. As you would imagine, injecting something intravenously is a way to fast-track the delivery of the vitamins and nutrients from the IV bag. “IV drips help replenish the body with essential vitamins and nutrients in a much more rapid manner than taking supplements,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a New Yorkbased dermatologist. The appeal of using IV drips for beauty is that, besides delivering skin-boosting nutrients in larger amounts and more quickly than any other method, the results are pretty immediate. “You see results really fast – within 24 hours your skin looks amazing,” says Dr. Schwartz. “People do it regularly – some do it every week. Lots of actors and actresses will do an IV for their skin before an event because they look so much better.” So don’t be surprised if on your next beauty treatment menu you see the option of getting injected with skinenhancing goodness. Just make sure it’s by a nurse or a similarly officially trained medical pro.

Wearable Technology A decade ago, almost nobody could predict that more than a million people would buy a watch that not only tells the time, but reads your text messages, checks the weather and tracks your workouts, too. But that’s exactly what happened. Wearable tech, like smartwatches and fitness trackers, boasted the number one spot in the ACSM’s survey for top fitness trends in 2019. Time Magazine asked six wearable technology specialists to predict where technology is taking us, creating hypothetical products based on their answers. Smart shoes could charge your phone’s battery while you rush to work. Your shirt could vibrate to help you find your way. A personal assistant could be embedded in contact lenses. The assistant will be able to analyze your tears to understand your emotional reactions, predict your thoughts and intentions, and react accordingly, providing you what you need before you even know you need it. Earrings will track your heart rate, body temperature and blood oxygen levels, providing you with vital health statistics. Mood shirts will be a thing. Sensors in your shirt will monitor your physiology, broadcasting it to the world around you – letting people respond appropriately. Buttons will have embedded GPS, tracking your movements and learning your habits. With innovations like this on the horizon, we’re moving closer to making possible products that are useful, usable and desirable for people.

Yoga While yoga has been around way before 2019 (like, thousands of year), it has mostly been inaccessible for the average person. There has, however, been a recent trend towards more easily accessible yoga classes, even short workouts in parks during your lunch hour. Yoga has become an anytime, anywhere activity. So much so that it was almost as popular as strength training in 2018, as per the ClassPass report. The mind-body exercise is incomparable when it comes to stress relief and inner contentment. • 36 million Americans practice yoga.
 • Between 2012 and 2016 the number of Americans doing yoga grew by 50%.
 • The number of over 50s practicing yoga has tripled over the last four years.
 • Flexibility and stress relief are the most popular reasons for starting yoga.
 • Americans spend $16 billion on yoga classes, clothing, equipment, and accessories each year.
 • There are currently 6,000 yoga studios in the US. Yoga continues to grow strength in numbers and is expected to see more and more trends (bodysuits, come and go. As the years continue, we can only expect yoga to continue to embrace current trends of health, wellness and fitness.

Female Health

Toxic Tampons:

Have you ever considered what’s actually in your tampons? Along with many other female products women are beginning to question what is in their tampons and what harm it could do them. As a result there’s an increase interest in ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ tampons. Emily Cardel (pictured) explains further.

D

Non-organic cotton

r. Maggie Ney, the co-director of the Women’s Clinic at the Akasha Center in Santa Monica explains, says we should. Because the vaginal walls are so permeable, anything in a tampon can make it to the bloodstream. The good news is, as awareness continues to rise about the truth of America’s three billion dollar toxin-filled tampon industry, we are also starting to see a rise in organic tampon companies that are worthy of our attention and investment.

According to Dr. Ney,

“Generally tampons are made from cotton, rayon, and synthetic fibers. But since tampons are considered a ‘medical device’ by the Food and Drug Administration, manufacturers are not required to issue a full disclosure of what is in their tampons. Conventional tampons have odor neutralizers, dyes, pesticides, and fragrances, which have an undisclosed mixture of chemicals that have been linked to endocrine disrupters, allergies, rashes, respiratory distress, cancer, birth defects, dryness, and infertility. They also contain GMOs, so if we are concerned about ingesting GMO foods, we should be equally concerned about inserting a GMO tampon – because the vaginal wall is so permeable, this allows toxins like pesticides and GMO proteins direct access to our bloodstream.” Here are five toxic ingredients in your tampons to be aware of:

Rayon & Dioxin

Rayon is a cellulose fiber that comes from wood pulp. When it’s bleached, a byproduct called dioxin is released. It is known to be toxic to humans. The FDA states that tampons show dioxin levels at or below the delectable limit, posing no health risk. However, according to the EPA, there is no safe level of exposure to dioxin.

Non-organic cotton is considered one of the dirtiest crops in the world, making up 2% of cultivated land while using 24% of the world’s pesticides. It allows substantially more pesticides and herbicides to be sprayed on the cotton, which increases the risk of its residues being present in the cotton that’s in our tampons.

Fragrance

Two words: chemical soup. Brand do not have to list what chemicals they’re putting under the umbrella term “fragrance,” so it can contain harmful ingredients.

BPA

BPA is a hormone-disrupting chemical that comes from producing plastic, and it has been linked to cancer. Be on the lookout for BPA-free applicators when shopping for tampons. Do not let this information scare you. Let it empower you to make better choices concerning the education of your health when it comes to your beautiful, feminine body. Let’s take a look at some of the tampon companies that care about our health just as much as we do.

Cora

Cora sells 100% certified organic tampons that are non-GMO and free of pesticides, chlorine, fragrance, and toxins. The applicator is fully recyclable and BPA-free as well. If you’re looking for another reason to love them, here’s one: for every month’s supply of Cora sold, the company will provide a month’s supply of pads and health education to girls from Kenya, India and the U.S. How awesome is that? Price: $15 for 36 18

Lola

Lola is a monthly subscription box for tampons. They offer a unique, build-your-own-box subscription. Meaning, you can customize your pack to be as filled with light, regular, or super tampons as your cycle needs. They offer 100% organic cotton, biodegradable tampons in BPA-free plastic applicators, or applicator-free tampons. The tampons are free of synthetic fibers, chemical additives, fragrance, dyes, and chlorine bleach. Price: $10 for a box of 18

Natracare

As the world’s first fully certified organic cotton tampons, there is no doubt Natracare knows what they are doing. Their tampons are 100% cotton, perfume and chlorine free, and biodegradable. They are widely popular and relatively cheap if you buy in bulk online. Price: $14 for 36 tampons

Organyc

Are you an eco-friendly kinda gal? Try Organyc tampons. They make their tampons entirely out of 100% biodegradable and compostable organic cotton bleached without chlorine. Note: These tampons have a cardboard applicator. Price: $5 for a box of 16

Seventh Generation

Seventh Generation is most likely available in your local supermarket or pharmacy, making it quite convenient for your monthly tampon run. These tampons use certified organic cotton, and have no fragrances, deodorants, or chlorine processing. The applicator is made with 95% plant-based materials and contains no BPA. Price: $5 for a box of 16 In the words of Dr. Ney, “Don’t worry about using a conventional tampon every once in a while when nothing else is available. But, when you have the opportunity, buy organic tampons or pads. The best option here would be an organic, chlorinefree, non-applicator tampon or organic, chlorine free pad.”

Bone Health

Your quick guide to Bone healthy Foods Makenzie Jones (pictured) provides a quick list of some easily obtained, and often forgotten sources of great food to keep your Bones in tip top shape.

Milk. Containing both calcium and vitamin D, especially in fortified kinds, it is an easy one to remember. Dairy-free varieties of milk can contain as much or more than cow’s milk. Add milk to cereal, oatmeal, smoothies, or drink it straight. Yogurt. Calcium and vitamin D are also both found in yogurt and can be available in dairy-free options. This can be a snack, breakfast, dessert, used in chicken salad recipes, and smoothies. Cheese. A few cubes or a couple slices can pack a lot of calcium in a smaller portion, but it lacks amounts of vitamin D. Toss crumbles into a salad, top pasta, layer in a sandwich, or have cottage cheese with fruit. Sardines. While they may not sound appetizing, these little fish are packed with nutrients, including both calcium and vitamin D. Recipes with sardines include pastas, toasts, salads, and more. Salmon. Known to be high in omega-3 fatty acids, salmon also contains over 100% of the daily value for vitamin D. Spinach and collard greens. These leafy greens both provide a dose of calcium in addition to many other vitamins.

W

hen it comes to bone health, most people instantly think “calcium,” which is true, but it does not build and sustain our bones on its own. Vitamin D is often overlooked as a key player in bone health, but it improves calcium absorption and bone growth, too. It is important to maintain a diet including not only enough of these two micronutrients, but enough energy consumption overall, because without enough energy, the body will pull from stores, including bones, for metabolic needs. Over time, this pull of nutrients from the bones can lead to bone loss, osteoporosis, and fractures. Females, especially athletes, are at higher risk for lack of energy and micronutrient consumption.

Cereals. One of the easiest and quickest breakfasts (or dinners and snacks sometimes!), cereal, can provide a variety of nutrients, especially if it is a fortified cereal. Have it with milk or yogurt and get a lot of calcium and vitamin D in one bowl. So how much is enough? Adults up to age 50 are recommended to get 1000 mg of calcium and 200 IU of vitamin D per day. Adults over 50 should aim for 1200 mg of calcium and 400-600 IU of vitamin D. Younger people who are still growing need higher amounts. For example, an 8-ounce glass of milk contains 300 mg of calcium. These nutrients can be added to any meal of the day, so meeting these needs should not be a challenge. Even if you are lactose intolerant, there are many sources of vitamin D and calcium that are not dairy. Before we look at some go-to bone foods, let us beware of sodas –studies have shown that they can leach calcium from our bones. 19

Tuna. This is another fish that contains vitamin D. Often found in to-go pouches, tuna can be a great addition to travel, work, or school lunches and snacks. Orange juice. Though it doesn’t have calcium and vitamin D on its own, fortified juices abound, and they are a great way to get in nutrients while also swapping out soda (just be mindful of sugar). To ensure bones that support you throughout life, the choices we make daily are key. It can be easy to overlook these things now, but it can be just as easy to be alert to our bodies’ needs and to incorporate these nutrients.

Love Circle is a road that leads up to a hill that conveniently sits at the top of Nashville so for just a few minutes you can feel like you are on top of the city. As you overlook the city lights you may just want to stay until morning to catch the sun peak over the Batman building.

7. Folk Everyone loves pizza, but it may not always be the most romantic option for date night. However, Folk’s wood brick oven pizzas, a collection of small plates, extensive wine menu, and delicious craft cocktails make this pizza perfect for your date night.

Diet Advice

Another option is to have just a bite of the bread to satisfy your temptation. Learning how to eat carbs correctly takes time. I work with many patients who have diabetes or are pre-diabetic and learning to eat carbs in the right way is advice I often give them.

Sneaky Sodas
One of the worst carbs for you is a sugar-sweetened beverage. Many people do not even realize that they are carbohydrates! Whether it comes in the form of juice, sweet tea, or a smoothie – knowing the carb total is very important. Did you know that a 12 oz. can of regular soda contains 39 grams of carbs? That is the same as eating two slices of bread and half of a large apple or 8-10 crackers, a piece of fresh fruit, and one small cookie! The difference is that the actual food items fill you up, whereas the soda doesn’t.

Carbs – They are not the Enemy! Beth Allen (pictured), Wellness Director at Faith Family Medical Center reminds us that all the hype about carbs being bad, is not necessarily true.

W

e all know people who are often sluggish throughout the day. One solution that you may not have thought of? Eat more carbs! We have been conditioned to think that all carbs are bad – but that just isn’t true! In fact, carbohydrates are the number one source of energy for the body.

limits is important to keep in mind. If someone tells me that they want to have dessert when they go out for dinner on their anniversary, I suggest they split the dessert and leave off the bread, because there usually is a carb dish, such as pasta or potatoes that is served with the meal.

Making Healthier Choices
Many people lump all carbs into one basket and label them as “bad.” While a brownie or a bag of chips is not a great choice, your body can still use those foods for energy. A healthier carb choice is a fresh apple or pear with skin on it! This fiberrich carb will provide you with energy to fight off sluggishness. As a dietitian at Faith Family Medical Center, I spend a lot of time helping patients understand which carbs are great choices, good choices, or not so good choices. Remembering that no food is off22

Make a Food Plan
A simple way to start a food plan is to become more aware of the carbs you are taking in – it’s all in the nutrition fact section on the food label! Here are some ideas: Try a baked sweet potato with a teaspoon of butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon as opposed to a heavy sweet potato casserole dish with lots of butter and sugar. Eating the peeling on the baked sweet potato adds additional fiber. Both are carbs, so if you are having the casserole, just eat less of another carb at that meal. Eating the food in its natural form is always the best choice. For example: a sugarfree pie still has carbohydrates – it is important to remember that having “sugar-free” on the label doesn’t mean you can eat as much as you want. It has flour, fruit, and often includes syrup. Another carb-smart substitute is mashes cauliflower potatoes instead of traditional mashed potatoes – check out the recipe below to learn how to make this healthy side dish!

6. You can still call them “mashed potatoes” because it does have potatoes in it. After everyone says they like the dish – then tell them the main ingredient. This allows you to eat another carbohydrate (such as a roll or cooked apples) since you didn’t overdo it with your potatoes! Senior Fitness

Seniors – It’s never too late to improve your Health and Fitness levels Michael A. Fish (pictured) is owner of Practical Fitness Nashville, a gym that specializes in personal training for older adults. Here he explains why it’s never too late to get on that exercise bike!

I

f you’re in the gym and you see a swarm of older adults strutting down the hallway to the fitness center wearing their sweats, headbands and iPods to partake in physical exercise, you do not need to do a double-take. That’s right, you saw correctly. More and more older adults have realized that exercising is not just for athletes and younger people anymore. Over the years, the GI Joe and Baby Boomer generations have realized that there are great benefits for themselves by continuing to exercise. It is no longer a workout in order to look good on the beach or improve their athletic prowess. It is now a workout to improve their mobility, stability, strength, coordination, slow the aging process and possibly even diseases and improve their Independence. Basically they are trying to move better, feel better and enjoy life more. There are several Senior Group classes using chairs, water aerobics, and balance classes such as Tai Chi, but there has also been a major increase in the number of older adults doing individual workouts, lifting weights and performing endurance exercises. It’s no surprise that aging causes loss of muscle mass and strength as well as the loss of flexibility and mobility. Unfortunately balance and stability may also decrease. Aging without exercise leads to a lessening of aerobic capacity, thinning bones, and susceptibility of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, neuromuscular diseases and the many other diseases associated with the aging process. With new information emerging from research everyday, there is compelling evidence that shows exercise is beneficial for all age groups. There have been many reports of how becoming or remaining physically active can help prevent, delay or slow several diseases. Growing older no longer means that you have to lose your ability to do everyday tasks. Unfortunately, seniors are more likely to have aches pains and illnesses. However, exercise has been proven to help improve all of the aforementioned. The government guidelines for those over 65 are two and a half hours of moderate exercise every week along with strength training twice a week. Strength training should work all the major muscle groups, aiming to get 8 to 12 repetitions and three sets per exercise. In addition, endurance work, like swimming, walking, biking, or dance should be performed 5 times a week for 30 minutes. Those that are physically able can do one session of 30 minutes and those that are unable to attain that could do 15 minutes twice a day or even 10 minutes 3 times a day.

Older adults that work with trainers and develop a regular exercise habit, comment on how happy they are to remain more independent. 24

Senior Fitness

Strength training will aid in stability and balance, strength, bone health and general quality of life. Endurance work will aid with increased energy while performing daily activities. Working with a fitness trainer to see what workouts would be most beneficial before beginning a workout routine and also to learn how to do the exercises correctly is highly recommended to avoid injuries. When seeking a trainer, find someone who specializes in working with older adults and with any specific issues that you are dealing with. For example, if you have had surgeries, chronic pain, or a musculoskeletal or neurological disease, make sure your trainer is familiar with your conditions. A thorough fitness assessment needs to include checking your balance while sitting or standing, and your walking or gait balance. A qualified trainer will also assess your mobility, stability, strength and endurance before designing any workouts for you. Assessments are instrumental in being able to tailor a workout for each individual. Working out without an assessment at any age is like going on a road trip with no directions. Once the assessments are performed and the programs are designed then the sky’s the limit. Workouts for seniors, just like workouts for young adults, can use a variety of tools, to keep the process fun for the mind and the body. Free weights, tubes, bands, medicine balls, kettlebells, battle ropes and many other pieces of equipment can be used to implement the workouts. Workouts must be as functional and as enjoyable as possible. Older adults that work with trainers and develop a regular exercise habit, comment on how happy they are to remain more independent. The importance of being able to carry groceries, do their own laundry, compete in golf games or tennis matches, work beyond retirement age, and play with their grandkids or dogs, cannot be underestimated. Let today be the day when you begin to move better, feel better, and enjoy life to the fullest.

Healthy Meal Kits

The healthiest meal delivery kits to order You’ve likely heard of them… probably had a friend or family member try them… and it’s a food trend that’s still going strong! We’re talking about meal delivery kits. Our regular contributor Lindsey Joe (pictured) of the Meal Planning Method reviews her favorites.

Green Chef.
With a variety of meal plans to suit your lifestyle, including “Heart Smart” and “Omnivore”, Green Chef prides itself on being a USDA certified organic meal delivery kit company. I also love their transparency with their ingredient list on their nutrition label so it’s not a guessing game. Terra’s Kitchen.
Are you a 15-minute meal kind of person? Terra’s Kitchen is your answer with ingredients that come already prepped and ready to go! You might also love their climate controlled vessel that reduces on delivery kit packaging waste.

HelloFresh.
It’s no surprise to hear that as the largest meal delivery kit company, HelloFresh delivers nationwide. What I love about this option it that it is lower in sodium than its competitors (~500 mg or less). And with heart disease being the number one cause of death in Tennessee, we

T

hey arrive straight to your doorstep with all the ingredients needed to whip up a home cooked meal. But which have your health in mind? Here are six meal delivery kits with the healthiest options available today.

Purple Carrot is solely a plant-based meal delivery kit service offering a fun way to enjoy more fruits and veggies in your life. I’ve heard these vegan meals are quite large and still just as satisfying with halved portions. (Pst! They also offer breakfast and lunch add-ons.)

PeachDish’s distribution center is in Atlanta, where 80% of our their farmers are located within 40 miles of, so you get to enjoy the tastes and flavors of the South! We love that this meal delivery kit company follows the USDA’s serving size recommendations to promote balanced meals. They also offer flexibility with ordering by allowing you to choose the number of serving sizes YOU want each week. 26

MEEL is a local meal delivery kit service from Nashville, TN that also offers “Farmstand Boxes”. MEEL kits are always organic, locally sources, freshly harvested, and sustainably packaged. This is a perfect fit for those want local farm fresh goodies, but may not have time to get to the farmer’s market. Children’s Mental Health

LENS Therapy, a 95% success rate with ADHD, Anxiety and Depression In the two years that Harmonized Brain Center has been open in Nashville offering LENS Neurofeedback, Sheri Rowney (pictured) has found the therapy particularly effective at helping with ADHD. Here she explains how it works.

W

ith the latest figures showing that 14% of children ages 4 to 17 nationwide and over 16% here in Tennessee are diagnosed with ADD and/or ADHD, parents are scrambling for information and resources to help their child. Many struggle with having to medicate their children with stimulants which helps the ADD/ ADHD symptoms but can cause other more harmful and long lasting side effects. There is a safe, quick and easy alternative. LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) can be as effective as medication without the harmful side effects. ADD/ADHD is generally associated with the inability to focus at school; not being able to sit still and to pay attention. Often these children are reprimanded for their behavior; not being able to sit in their seats, fidgeting when they are supposed to be still; causing disruptions at inappropriate times. These children tend to struggle with their grades because they are unable to focus on what the teacher is saying and are often labeled with a

learning disability when in fact they are often times quite bright; they just can’t focus in the traditional setting. Kids with ADD/ADHD are often ostracized from their peers as they are labeled the “bad kids.” They can be loud and disorganized; they often interrupt when others are talking. Sometimes they seem to not care that they are so disruptive. They may not be invited to parties and play dates because of their behavior. No matter how hard they try; they just can’t seem to be able to do what is expected of them. Not only does this affect their educational needs but it also affects their self-confidence; they often feel like they don’t measure up and will never be as successful as the other kids. This lack of confidence causes long term effects as their selfimage diminishes, they often quit trying and just resign themselves to thinking they’ll never be able to measure up so it’s not worth the effort. For the last 35 years, there has been a new non-medicated, non-invasive option for not only 27

treating the symptoms of ADD/ADHD, but also in changing the brain so that the client can focus better, interact better and make better choices. Called Low Energy Neurofeedback, it has been in continual development since 1990. With a success rate of over 90%, it uses a small radio frequency to disrupt the brain waves and allows them to reset back into a more effective, natural pattern. Over a period of just a few sessions, clients start to feel more focused, calmer and more able to make better decisions. Sessions only take a few minutes a week and results are long lasting. This amazingly successful therapy is available at Harmonized Brain Centers. Here we combine LENS with Life Coaching, introducing skills and habit changes to go along with the more efficient brain activity. This integrative approach sets your child up for success in a natural and effective way. LENS is not only used for treating ADD/ADHD but also for people suffering with migraines, TBI, anxiety, depression, brain fog, chemo fog and memory issues. The brain is an amazing organ with the ability to change to become more efficient and effective with just a little help. Here is a testimony of a very happy family of a child with ADHD who came to see us at Harmonized Brain Centers: I brought my 14 year old grandson to Harmonized Brain Centers after trying three different medications for his ADD. They all caused side effects and changed his personality so that not only were we dealing with his lack of attention and focus but were also seeing anger issues, weight loss and he couldn’t fall asleep at night. He was able to stay focused better at school but was still unmotivated and we weren’t seeing many good changes. We were desperate for another alternative and after spending lots of time and research, we decided to call HBC. Our experience there was nothing short of a miracle. After just two sessions we noticed he was calmer and nicer at home. We were anxious to see how his grades would be and were thrilled when the second grading period ended with an A, 4 B’s and 2C’s! His confidence was back, his attitude changed and the whole family dynamics changed with him. We couldn’t be more thrilled or satisfied with Harmonized Brain Centers. I would recommend Harmonized Brain Centers to anyone looking for help with ADD. We are so glad we found them”. For more information, please call Harmonized Brain Centers of Tennessee at (615) 331-8762. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to discuss an option that you might not have known even existed. Our goal is for your child to be the best they can be; we would love to help!

Milk!

What’s with all these Milk options? Animal

Cow’s Milk Cow’s milk is a good option for non-vegans and those without milk sensitivity due to its high nutrient content. Naturally it’s a good source of protein and calcium, and it is fortified with vitamin D and other vitamins and minerals. Whole milk is high in saturated fat, so non-fat milk is a healthier option for those who prefer cow’s milk. Goat Milk Like cow’s milk, goat milk is naturally a good source of protein and calcium, but not a good source of other vitamins and minerals unless it’s fortified with them. Because it contains slightly less lactose than cow’s milk, it’s possible that some people may tolerate it better. It’s high in saturated fat, but unlike cow’s milk, low-fat options are not readily available. The other downside is the strong taste that may be unpleasant to some.

More and more Americans are turning to plant-based diets than ever before. The increasing demand for plant-based options, and the large number of people with a milk allergy or intolerance has created a huge market for non-dairy milk alternatives. But with so many different options available, how do you choose the right type of milk? Continue reading to learn what milk options are available and why they may or may not be right for you. Cedrina Calder (pictured) explains the options.

Plant-Based

Grains – good for people who are sensitive to dairy, soy or nuts Oat Oat milk is becoming increasingly more popular because it’s inexpensive and easy to make. It’s a good source of fiber and is low-fat, but it has less protein than cow’s milk. It’s high in carbs and calories. It doesn’t contain vitamins and minerals unless fortified with them. Rice Rice milk is high in calories and carbs, so it’s not a good option if you’re looking for low-calorie or low-carb options. It has less protein than oat milk and doesn’t contain any fiber. Rice milk naturally contains very low amounts of vitamins and minerals so it must be fortified with them.

Pseudo-grain – good for people sensitive to dairy, soy or nuts

Peanut Peanut milk is a good option for people sensitive to dairy or with soy allergy. It’s high in protein, but unfortunately is high in calories and fat. Unless fortified, it’s not a good source of calcium and vitamin D. It should be avoided in those with a peanut allergy. Nuts – good for people sensitive to dairy or soy Cashew Cashew milk is a dairy alternative that’s low in calories, carbs and fat. It’s rich in vitamin E and contains no saturated fat. It’s not a good source of calcium and vitamin D unless it’s fortified, and it contains much less protein than cow’s milk. It should be avoided in those with a nut allergy. Almond Almond milk has a very pleasant taste. It’s low in calories and carbs, and it’s a good source of monounsaturated fats which help lower levels of bad cholesterol. It contains more protein than cashew milk but less than cow’s milk. Almond milk should be avoided in those with a nut allergy. Seed – good for people sensitive to dairy, soy or nuts

Legumes – good for people sensitive to dairy

Hemp Hemp milk is low in calories and carbs. It has more protein than almond milk. It contains about the same amount of fat as whole milk but has a good balance of healthy fats (omega 3 and 6 fatty acids). The downside is that it’s more expensive than other alternatives. Fruit – good for people sensitive to dairy, soy or nuts

Soy Out of all the plant-based alternatives, soy milk is the most nutritionally balanced. It’s naturally a great source of protein and calcium. However, soy milk isn’t an option for those with soy allergy, and its beany taste is one that’s not pleasant to some.

Coconut Coconut milk has a pleasant taste and is low in calories. However, it’s high in saturated fats and contain no protein. Despite the high amount of saturated fats, research suggests that it helps lower levels of bad cholesterol.

Quinoa Quinoa milk is low in calories and fat. Quinoa is a complete protein meaning it contains all the essential amino acids. Although quinoa itself is rich in protein, the milk has a much lower protein content.

MILE is a major advancement in laser vision correction in the last 25 years. Compared with LASIK, SMILE® has three distinct advantages. SMILE® is performed with a smaller incision. This surgery causes less dry eyes and less postoperative complications. Dental Health

Is there a correlation between Heart disease and Periodontal disease? Many people are unaware that having periodontal disease (the destruction of gum tissue and bone that hold our teeth in place) can affect your overall health. Periodontal disease is one of the most common infections. Periodontal disease is not only the number one reason people lose teeth; it can also affect the health of your body! Dr. Jaime Romero (pictured) of Solace Oral Surgery explains why.

While there is still much research to be done in order to fully understand the link between periodontal disease and systemic diseases, research has shown that infections in the mouth can wreak havoc elsewhere in the body.

Regular Dental Check-Ups are Key To ensure a healthy, disease-free mouth, we recommend the importance of regular dental checkups and cleanings, which include a periodontal evaluation. Also, diligent home care and a proper diet can help reduce plaque and bacteria in the mouth. Remember the mouth body connection! Taking care of your oral health can contribute to your overall medical health! To learn more or to schedule an appointment, please call Solace Oral Surgery at 615-320-1392 or visit us at www.SolaceOralSurgery.com.

Patient Testimonial:

What is Periodontal Disease? Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection, and in its earliest stages, it’s called gingivitis. It starts when an accumulation of plaque (a colony of bacteria, food debris, and saliva) is NOT regularly removed from the gums and teeth. The bacteria in plaque produce toxins/acids that irritate and infect the gums, eventually destroying the jaw bone that supports the teeth. When periodontal disease is not treated, it can eventually lead to tooth loss!

Possible Effects of Periodontal Bacteria There are numerous studies that have looked into the correlation between gum disease and major medical conditions. These studies suggest

people with periodontal disease are at a greater risk of systemic disease. They also indicate that periodontal disease can allow oral bacteria to enter the bloodstream and travel to major organs, beginning new infections. Research suggests that periodontal bacteria in the blood stream can: • Contribute to the development of heart disease • Increase the risk of stroke • Compromise the health of those that have diabetes or respiratory diseases • Increase a woman’s risk of having a preterm, low-birth weight baby 30

“Dr. Romero is a caring and knowledgeable practitioner. He legitimately cares about each and every patient which really does mean a lot. He spends plenty of time to answer patient’s questions and helps them understand their problem and how it may be treated. I have had the pleasure of knowing Dr. Romero personally for several years, and I can tell you first hand that he will go out of his way to take exceptional care of your needs!”
