The benefits of native plants
Top soccer club opens youth academy in Nashville One of the world’s leading soccer clubs, FC Barcelona, is to open a fulltime soccer club in Nashville this August. The Nashville Barça Academy is an official part of FC Barcelona’s global program, which provides the opportunity for children to train with official FC Barcelona staff and develop their skills. In a press statement, the company behind the academy, Sporting Global, explained why they decided to choose Nashville as a location. “When we hosted our very first camp in Nashville over three years ago, it became evident that our brand and its values are truly in line with those of this community,” said John Nash, CEO of Sporting Global. “We could not be more excited to finally be able to bring this premier academy to Nashville. We believe that our partners, Father Ryan High School and Harding Academy, share in our vision for the Academy, and, together, we will build a strong, values-based community centered on soccer.” The former head of men’s soccer at Belmont University, Earle Davidson,

will be the general manager for the Nashville Academy. “[H]aving modeled much of my work over the last 30 years on FC Barcelona’s methodology, values, and playing style, the opportunity to work as a part of the Club is extraordinary. Having an elite brand, like FCB, enter the burgeoning Nashville soccer scene that is focused on developing both high-quality people and players is only going to create a powerful diversity in the culture of local soccer,’ said Davidson. The Nashville Barça Academy is organized in partnership with Father Ryan High School and Harding Academy. Tryouts are open to both boys and girls of any age.
B
efore I pinpoint the benefits of native plants, let me share what a native plant is. According to the UT Institute of Agriculture “native plants are those that occurred in North America before the European settlement. Those not native are referred to as exotic plants that come from countries with similar climate and environmental conditions.”
Burnout officially recognized as a medical syndrome
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that ‘burnout’ has been officially recognized as an occupational syndrome. According to a recent report, the organization

said the syndrome was characterized by “1) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; 2) increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and 3) reduced professional efficacy.” However, the organization does explain that experiencing burnout is only applicable in an occupational context, and is as a result of chronic stress at work. This syndrome is usually found in those who work in high pressure environments, particularly with job roles that require long hours or lots of traveling.
• They are adapted to the region which keeps them healthy from such things as pests, bacteria, and inclement weather. • Environmentally and ecologically beneficial: They do not need herbicides, fertilizers, watering, or mowing. • They add more oxygen to the air, filter rainwater naturally, and removes pollutants from the air. • These plants are home to local wildlife, birds, and local pollinators. • You save money and time by not mowing, weeding, and watering. 5
I love a beautiful yard just as much as anyone, and we have spent countless time and money in the past trying to achieve just that. I noticed when I lived in the city that a neighbor had a beautiful yard, but we didn’t see her out there as often as we were caring for her beautiful landscape. When we asked about her yard she explained the importance of having a native garden and plants, as well as how they easily these plants adapt because they are made for the area. She even had a very small “meadow” that she didn’t mow (this was on a quarter acre plot) for the butterflies and birds that looked like something from a magazine. She made it look so cute with some simple yard art. You do not need to be a horticulturist to start implementing native plants, believe me, I’m not! Go to your local UT Extension office, a local park that has a garden center, ask a friend, and use your local library for books on the subject. Never stop learning, enjoy the connection to nature we have been gifted, and stay natural!

Vitamin J Karina Hammer, a certified Holistic Wellness Coach, shares what vital ingredient is missing in the lives of everyday Americans.
V
itamin J. It’s the vitamin that is missing in most American diets. Haven’t heard of it? Can’t find it at the health food store? That’s because it’s only found within you. Vitamin J is Vitamin Joy. When we don’t get enough joy in our lives, it’s easy to turn to food to fill us up. It’s true we can get joy from our food. It’s the amount of joy from food that we get that we need to take a look at. If you notice that the majority of your joy is coming from food, that is a sign that you are out of balance with other areas of your life that need nurturing. The 10% rule works well here. If more than 10% of your total joy in life is coming from food, that may be a sign that you need to give more attention to other areas in your life; such as your relationships, spirituality, mindset, career, finances, and purpose. We put money in our 401(k)s. We take calcium supplements. We exercise. We hope these precautions will protect us as we age. But as we safeguard our money, bones and blood pressure, we forget to safeguard the one thing that can make a difference in the quality of our lives as we get older: our happiness. Consider when the last time was that you had fun. You know, time when you laughed until you cried. You weren’t reading something to be productive, or multitasking in any way...just real, honest to goodness, cell phone off, away from the world, fun. If you’re like most people, it probably hasn’t happened recently. We all have so much going on in our lives that we forget to have fun and live in joy.

Nashville Public Radio reports that there is a “proposal moving forward in the Metro Council would push Nashville’s government toward getting all of its power from renewable energy sources by 2041.” The report explains that Nashville Electric Service currently has 17,000 black solar panels in Madison TN, a part of the Music City Solar program. To utilize these facilities, residents in the area can purchase a ‘subscription’ that adds clean energy to their power supply in return for credit on energy bills.

Nashville council member Freddie O’Connell argues that the Metro Government should subscribe to the program. “For every block of power that’s not subscribed to by a member of the general public, Metro can backfill that,” he says. This idea is part of a larger plan for the Metro to invest other eco-conscious ideas, such as zeroemission vehicles and green building design. This proposal is in its early stages, with some questioning how it will be achieved in practice, but does signify a growing interest in green technology in Nashville.

Bill passed to reduce healthcare costs A new legislation hopes to end unexpected health care bills and improve transparency of healthcare costs. According to a new report, almost one in six Americans receive an unexpected bill after receiving treatment, which they thought was covered by their insurance. The Lower Health Care Costs Act is a bipartisan package that has been worked on for almost two years. The Senate Health Care Committee, which is lead by Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander, passed the bill 20-3. This new bill hopes to avoid situations where patients receive treatment in a hospital, but are treated by an ‘outof-network specialty physician’, who works at the hospital. The cost of which

Five steps to build family unity Regular columnist Dr Lisa Webb offers her advice on how to better connect with family members.
O
ne common complaint I hear from my clients is how busy everyone is, and how they don’t often feel unified or connected to their family. If children don’t feel their families are something special and important to be a part of, they will find other groups where they feel included and wanted. It is worth noting that increases in behavioral issues occur in children when they do not feel connected to their parents and caregivers.
is normally passed onto the individual. The Act also includes legislation that reduces prescription drug prices and aims to improve health information exchange.
Communicate, Communicate, Communicate
Effective communication necessitates more listening than talking, more concentration than jumping to hasty conclusions, more clarification than condemnation. Try to consider the other person’s perspective. When you are listening, don’t think about what response you are going to give. In order to hear what our family members are saying we must let down our defenses and open our ears. Ask yourself why your spouse or child feels the way he or she does. Listen with your heart and speak with honesty and humility. Listening is one of the most powerful ways you can show you care about the other person.
New TN law bans phone use while driving
Establish a family culture
Tennessee has introduced a new law that prohibits drivers aged 18 or older from holding a cellphone while driving. In order to use cellphone while driving, individuals must have an earpiece, headphone or wrist device. It is illegal for drivers to write, send or read any texts while operating their vehicle. Drivers can be fined up to $200 for using phones while driving. Using a cellphone while driving is one of the top ten causes of fatal car crashes in Tennessee, and this law hopes to
Creation of a family culture occurs every day. Regular family dinner; a routine for waking up, saying goodbye, going to bed, family prayer – being purposeful about these smaller, more frequent traditions makes these actions a priority and will provide positive interactions between you and your children. Family traditions are also a part of family culture. It’s important to be deliberate (as opposed to sporadic) about traditions. It matters less about how many traditions you have and more about the consistency of the tradition. Children will begin to notice traditions and look forward to them. Children feel safe and secure knowing that they are a part of something important and fun and that traditions and activities will be the same week to week, year to year.
combat the high number of individuals who use their phones while in the drivers seat. Similar legislation has been rolled out in other states, and across the globe. “Last year, there were over 24,600 distracted driving crashes in Tennessee. Through voluntary compliance with the new Hands Free Law, we hope to see a significant improvement in driver behavior to help make our roadways safer,” the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security told online news site StyleBluePrint. 7
Compassion & Compromise
Compassion in the home means to develop a genuinely caring and considerate heart – one that sympathizes and empathizes with our various struggles, fears and difficulties. A healthy family is most often characterized by compromise with give and take. Remember, parents are the leaders in your home and children will follow your example. Show patience and self-discipline. Speak kindly and communicate fairly. Apologize and make amends when you make mistakes and these actions will become family values.
Consistency is key
Maintain a consistent schedule that is realistic for your family. For example, serving dinner at the same time each evening and having established bedtimes (especially for younger children) allows parents and kids to both know expectations. The most effective families function as a team where all do their part. Share household responsibilities. Assign specific chores. Establish routines and house rules. In order for children to learn teamwork and togetherness, their parents must first learn to function as a unified team.
Have fun together.
Schedule time to relax together as well as weekly meetings as a couple and family to go over schedules, finances, parenting, and other concerns. Remember you are the heart of the family and nurturing your relationship is a vital part of unity. Happy parents make happy children! At least once a month make an effort to go on a family outing or have a family activity. Remember: a family that works together and plays together – stays together.
Next steps
As you work together to build family unity, understand that this process takes time and patience. On the other hand, don’t ignore serious issues. Identify these challenges and look for solutions. Talk with your doctor, teachers, or other trusted professionals and seek out resources in your community. www.bodymindtn.com.
Vitamins and nutrients
Rootine: a new option for vitamins A new company is hoping to change the way that we consume vitamins and nutrients. Rootine, which is based in Nashville, launched earlier this year. Rachel Rowney sits down with Rachel Soper-Sanders, one of the co-founders of the brand, to find out more.
A
new Nashville-based company hopes to shake up the vitamin game. Rootine is a hyperpersonalized, subscription vitamin program that aims to provide its users with a totally unique mix of supplements for their health. Rachel Soper-Sanders, one of the co-founders of Rootine, explains that traditional ‘one-fits-all’ vitamins aren’t often helpful to health regimes, due to different individuals’ genetic makeup. “Rootine is a very different type of multivitamin. What we do is look at your lifestyle, your DNA and your micronutrient levels, combine all of those data points and create a 100% custom recipe for you, full of specific nutrients and dosages.” The vitamins that Rootine delivers don’t look like traditional capsules, they are much smaller than most tablets, and these ‘microbeads’ claim to be designed in a way that optimizes delivery. According to the company, this design took three years to be engineered in order to maximize the way that your body absorbs nutrients, in a ‘slow-release’ method that mimics how your body
absorbs food. These microbeads can be swallowed with a drink or sprinkled on a meal. “It’s great for people that find the big, ‘horse’ pills hard to take. You can take it in a lot of different ways. You can pour it on your tongue, you can take it with water, you can mix it into your smoothie, yogurt or cereal,” says Rachel. Although Rachel is based here in Nashville, much of the science behind Rootine was developed in Europe. Rootine’s co-founder, Dr. Daniel Wallerstorfer is a leading genetic scientist and has worked on health and nutrition products for over a decade. Rootine has partnered with Europe’s leading genetics and nutrients lab for all lab testing and vitamin production. “Rootine is built from a team of genetic scientists who know that generic recommendations don’t work, and that the technology, research and science is all there to make personalized vitamins, but no one is doing it. So what we are launching is a product that can really help each person live healthier on an individual basis,” says Rachel.
Сo-founder Rachel Soper-Sanders There are three stages to creating the personalized Rootine package.
Rootine was built out of the idea that standard multivitamins in the market are based on a onesize-fits mentality, but these generic recommendations do not work and customization is key.
8
1) Take a lifestyle quiz. This is an online lifestyle assessment that asks about diet, stress levels, energy levels, exercise habits and looks at other lifestyle factors. 2) A DNA test. Rootine needs your DNA to give an in-depth understanding of what nutrients will be compatible with your body. This can be sent to your home, or the information can be pulled from other websites such as 23 and Me or ancestry.com. 3) Upload blood data. If you have access to this information, you can better assess your current ‘nutrient status’. Once these stages have been completed, the Rootine packages will be delivered to your door on a monthly basis. For those who are interested in making sure their health routine is perfectly tuned to them, Rootine offers a truly personalized service, and its approach to vitamins is sure to shake up the wellness industry. www.rootinevitamins.com
Mushrooms:
A weekend griller’s secret ingredient Local Table is a local food and farm guide. Their goal is to support a community that celebrates homegrown food, folks and farms from Tennessee. Here, writer Josh McCrary shares his ideas to shake up your grilling habits with some natural produce.
G
rilling is one of the most basic methods to cook hamburgers, steaks, seafood, or vegetables. A new trend called ‘blended meats’ is changing grilling as we know it, though. This trend involves blending different vegetables, such as mushrooms, into classic grilled dishes. Blended meats can even be used to reform the classic hamburger. The blended meats trend has become popular across the nation to enhance flavor, increase the nutritional value, and to improve the use of Earth’s resources. Surely blended burgers do not have the same flavor as a classic grilled burger, right? That is correct. In fact, grilling blended burgers with mushrooms improves the flavor compared to the classic burger. One research study even found that seared
Mediterranean Blended Burger Prep time - 15 minutes Cook Time - 10 minutes Servings - 4 patties
mushrooms have a more intense roasted, charred, and smoky flavor. This boost in flavor is due to the savory flavor property of mushrooms, known as umami. The umami compounds create a longer-lasting taste feeling on the taste buds, leading to more taste satisfaction. Cooked mushrooms also add moisture to dishes to improve the overall appeal that every backyard griller is trying to reach to impress his or her guests. Mushrooms add Vitamin D, potassium, B Vitamins, and other vitamins and minerals that are found in meats and grains. These nutrients help build strong bones, control blood pressure, and protect cells from damage. Blending meats with mushrooms can also lower salt by 25 percent. Less salt can help these burgers to become a better heart healthy option.
Ingredients: 1/2 pounds crimini mushrooms 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 pound ground beef, 90% lean/10% fat 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 hamburger buns
Instructions: – Finely dice mushrooms or gently pulse in food processor. – In skillet, warm 1 tablespoon olive oil on medium-high heat and add mushrooms, searing 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from heat and cool for 5 minutes. – Transfer cooled mushrooms to medium bowl. Add ground beef and salt, mixing until combined. Make 4 patties. Cook burger patties on the grill using medium-high heat until desired doneness. Plate and add desired toppings to bun. 9
Lastly, blended meats can also help to reduce the environmental impact. Today, mushrooms are grown inside mushroom houses, allowing for control of environmental factors, land use, and energy and water needs. Mushroom farmers also recycle crushed corncobs, cottonseed hulls, and horse stable bedding to reuse waste from other farmers. Mushroom farmers have also been able to streamline energy use and control costs to better use Earth’s natural resources. Blended meats are on the rise to enhance the flavor of foods, become healthier, and to better use Earth’s resources. Join the movement and try the recipe below to add a little secret to your grill. Topping recommendations: feta cheese, romesco sauce, sweet peppers and seared red onions. The community of wellness
It takes a village Supporting each other on our wellness journeys Leah McGee, registered dietitian and co-founder of Nourished Routes, looks at the how the wider wellness community can work together to support each of us on our health journey.
Wellness is becoming a bigger part of our lives and it is truly an amazing thing to see so many people take ownership of it. The sheer volume of information exchanged between everyday people that have started wellness pages, social media sites and successful businesses by creating content in their living rooms has blown up. 12
I
nstagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and other social media platforms exist to help us connect, to friends, clients, products, services, and more. Another way that we are connecting online is through the exchange of wellness ideas. Wellness is becoming a bigger part of our lives and it is truly an amazing thing to see so many people take ownership of it. The sheer volume of information exchanged between everyday people that have started wellness pages, social media sites and successful businesses by creating content in their living rooms has blown up. While this same online trend may overwhelm some everyday site-scrollers as we see our acquaintances convert into fitness coaches, consider first the impact of adopting a “village” mentality, and how this trend is positively impacting your community. The “village” mentality can be considered when helping others start on a health and wellness route, and refers to the old proverb that “it takes a village to raise a child”. Applied to wellness, the proverb means that everyone in a community “raises”, or influences, one another. Similarly it can be understood that regardless of how much or little that one participates in their community, it drives some sort of outcome on the whole. So regardless of how healthy your pins are on your Pinterest board, or whether you have started a health coaching side hustle, each of us – doctor, dietitian, farmer, accountant, salesman, – participate in and contribute to our community’s wellness. This phrase is not used to compare someone seeking help in the world of wellness to a child, but to identify the community of togetherness, communication and cooperation that we can work towards as we make wellness even more of a priority. Involvement truly makes an impact.
The community of wellness
This also points to the idea there cannot be one, all-knowing wellness solution designed to fit every one of our needs. As much as we would like for this to be the case, our true call to action is multidisciplinary if we are to make lasting, healthy changes. Support one another on social media through each of our journeys. Join our clients in hiking groups and on their dog walks. Share your healthy recipe on your Facebook page. This is how you build a village. Your well-being at home, work or at the grocery store, is so heavily impacted by what you choose to say and do. If we consider this daily, how great could the wellness outcomes be in our great Nashville “village”? So to better coordinate with comrades in the Nashville community of wellness, there are a few wellness tips I’d like to share from a dietitian’s perspective:
1. Try to avoid the use of definitive language. Be skeptical of “always and never” statements when it comes to nutrition and dieting advice. Definitive language tends to be what “fad” diets are made of, meaning they aren’t long-lasting or based on substantial evidence. 2. Wellness is not up to one person or discipline. Define what well-being means to you and chase it! 3. Do what you enjoy. This goes along with the previous tip, but when you are doing what makes you happy, you are going to be well. 4. Eat real food. You will feel better, have the energy your body needs and be more satisfied from your eating experiences. At Nourished Routes, we design personalized wellness plans, and you best believe it, we include real food! 13

Healing and helping animals Proverbs 12:10 is an organization that specializes in helping animals that have been neglected or mistreated. Rachel Rowney speaks to the Lavonne Redferrin, who shares her story and why she is convinced that animals should be part of everyone’s wellness journey.
T
he history of any organization is always interesting and heartfelt, and the story of Proverbs 12:10 is no different. An animal rescue that is committed to ‘Helping His Helpless’ through quality care and healing, adoptions, and population control awareness, the organization was founded by Lavonne Redferrin. “As a child I spent many hours a day around animals. My small rural hometown, like many today, had unwanted “disposable” animals, many of whom I sneaked onto our farm,” recalls Redferrin in the book, Animal Lovers. She details how throughout her life she found it impossible to turn away a stray animal, and has found loving homes for over 7,000 pets in the last decade.
Speaking to Nashville Health & Wellness Magazine, Redferrin describes the work that the organization carries out. “I think our biggest service to the Nashville area is our willingness to take on some of the most expensive and tragically sad animals in need. We also do our very best to raise awareness about the plight of animals due to people not fixing their pets. Education is key if we are to ever have better control of overpopulation.” In a year, Proverbs 12:10 sees an average of 1,000 animals coming through their program, and is a nonprofit organization. “The work it takes to do this is incomprehensible to anyone who hasn’t done it. It is very similar to having dozens of infants at once. Medical bills, gas for transporting, cost of food, 14
housing, etc. has to be done on a leap of faith, but God has provided,” says Lavonne. Animals are often called upon to help those who have experienced trauma or are struggling with an illness. For example, therapy dogs are used for children in schools that have had mass shootings. Anyone who has an animal knows the calming effect they have on their owners after a stressful day or situation; it often appears that animals understand human emotions a lot more than we give them credit for. “I have no doubt that animals are a huge help to people who allow them to be. In a society where depression and loneliness are commonly found, nothing can soothe a soul like a devoted animal waiting inside your door when you return home. They love with an unmatched passion,” says Lavonne. There have been many studies and reports that illustrate how animals can make a huge impact on the wellbeing of those around them. For example, taking a dog on a walk outside is a way for the human and the animal to bond and relax, and fulfills the needs of the animal. So, how can the community give back to Proverbs 12:10? “Nashville can help Proverbs and other animal welfare organizations in so many ways. Volunteering is an amazing experience and blesses both the animals and the human,” Lavonne explains. “Also, sharing social media posts to raise awareness is a simple act that has a huge ripple effect. Food and supply drives are always helpful and of course, monetary donations are a huge need.” For more information on Proverbs 12:10, visit www.proverbs1210rescue.org.

This seems obvious, but it will prevent you from using your phone or tablet just because it is in front of you.
Set notification limits on your phone The concept of ‘9-5’ emails no longer exists in the modern world. If you have work emails on your phone, snooze notifications when you are at home or not in working mode. If you see an email pop up – even if you don’t respond to it – your brain will still process the contents of the message, meaning that you cannot truly switch off.

O
ur ongoing journey to become the healthiest version of ourselves often looks at a traditional sphere of behaviors. We focus on what we eat, how much we sleep, what products we use and how much we exercise, which are (of course) very important to our overall wellbeing. Our interactions with technology and the digital world are a huge part of our daily lives, but do we consider this in our healthy living regime? The inescapable force of social media, and the expectation of each of us to be constantly available via text or calling means that our interactions with the digital world sometimes seem unavoidable.

Self care
Changing the conversation about self-care What options are available for local residents of Nashville if they want to concentrate on self-care? Lakeithea Anderson, community engagement coordinator for Nashville Community Education highlights the programs available.
L
et’s go ahead and admit it in this social mediaobsessed society, “self-care” is now buzz word that has become pretty popular, and could even be considered a cliche. Despite the overuse of the term, self-care should be a priority, and thanks to people discussing it on their online platforms, understanding of the importance of self-care has continued to grow. Further, the conversation about what self-care is and the best ways to introduce self-care into your busy, everyday life has become more prominent. A few years ago, if you heard the term self-care, you were most likely reminded of when you would hear people tell family members or friends to “take care of yourself.” This simple phrase carried simple actions. This phrase reminded you to take some time
to get your hair done or get some extra rest while the kids are napping, it was simple. Nowadays, “take care of yourself” has been replaced with self-care, and it’s a term that carries so much more weight. Having a form of self-care means improving your mental, physical, and emotional health. As more people admit they need to embrace self-care, they are taking responsibility for their wellbeing. People are enjoying solo trips or carrying out solo activities, joining workout groups, practicing meditation, and spending more evenings or mornings feeding their curiosity for different interests and hobbies, after spending long hours at work. People are talking about better (and more fun) ways to be healthy and active. Taking a few hours out of your day or week to
do something you love, to create, to read or journal has shown many people that self-care is a great way to not only take care of yourself, but also to be inspired and feel refreshed. At Nashville Community Education we believe that self-care is an intricate part of people’s everyday life. We love being a part of the conversation for self-care for many students. Hearing stories of how they take fun evening classes after a long day at work to boost their moods and energy. We offer many personal classes that Nashvillians can take to learn a new skill, meet a new neighbor, and most importantly, spend some time doing things that they love or learning something new, whether that is a new language, an art class or learning a fitness routine. We’ve asked two instructors why their particular classes are perfect for self-care: Ashley Mintz, Accordion Books instructor: why creating art is a form of self-care? Are there any elements in your class that you believe helps with self-care? The act of creating art is a form of self-care because it allows us to relax the part of our brain that is always thinking and structured. Being creative encourages going with the flow and being able to feel our way through what we are doing. Creating art is a way to have and do something for ourselves. Even if we give a piece of art away or sell it, it still has our fun, peaceful essence connected to it. Art-making encourages curiosity and laughter. What are some self-care tips you would give your students based on your “subject” and/or class? Based on my class, self-care tips would be allowing yourself to be completely open when creating. Being open and in the moment allows us to be stress-free, because all we are focused on is what is going on right, as opposed to anything in the past or future.

Self care
Self-care is important because it is easy to get burned out when we are all so busy. If you are not giving yourself energy, space, and self-love, you will have none to give to others, and eventually you will be depleted.
Why do you believe self-care is important? Self-care is important because it is easy to get burned out when we are all so busy. If you are not giving yourself energy, space, and self-love, you will have none to give to others, and eventually you will be depleted. Keeping self-care as a top priority is important to our quality of life because it keeps us balanced and allows this to thrive without feeling like we are giving too much. Lindsey Joe, Master Meal Planning instructor: How creating a healthy food goes hand in hand with self-care. Are there any elements in your class that you believe helps with Self-care? One important act of self-care is nourishing your body. Meal planning can 100% help accomplishment this, by taking the guesswork out of “What is for dinner?” and eating intentionally, with your health in mind. What are some self-care tips you would give your students based on your “subject” and/or class? To put meal planning on your calendar just like you would any other important appointment in your life to ensure it doesn’t fall to the bottom of your to-do list. You have to eat multiple times a day after all! Why do you believe self-care is important? Self-care is so important because no one else is going to look out for you like you can look out for you. It is essential. You can learn more about Nashville Community Education and our upcoming fall 2019 session by heading to Nashville.gov/ce. 17
Migraines
Suffering from Migraines? This non-drug treatment can help Supporting each other on our wellness journeys Nearly 10% of the population suffers from Migraines. But by using LENS Neurofeedback, a significant number of people are finding relief and getting their lives back to normal. Sheri Rowney (pictured) from Harmonized Brain Centers in Nashville, explains how it can help sufferers.
“I
have a headache.” These are words most adults have uttered at some point in their lives. Due to the many types of headaches, it is an unfortunate fact of life that we will all have one sooner or later. Thankfully, most of them are short lived, not too intense, and we can soon go about our daily activities without disruption or interference. For others though, headaches can be a chronic condition that literally change the way they live their lives. For them, the pain of their headaches is enough to disrupt their lives, take away their happiness and joy, and can cause anxiety and depression. They’re called Migraines. Nearly one in four households in the U.S. has someone that has been diagnosed with Migraines. It is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world and over 10% of U.S. children are diagnosed each year with a Migraine. What are these headaches and what can be done to help?
Migraines are not just a bad headache. There are many neurological symptoms that go along with the headache that determine what makes it a Migraine. The headache itself is a severe throbbing and recurring pain, usually felt on one side of the head but can often be felt on both sides. This pain can also be accompanied by visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sensitivity to sound, lights, touch and smell, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face. The Migraine usually lasts between four and 72 hours before it is completely gone. For most Migraine sufferers, these attacks are usually once or twice a month, but for over four million people, they are a daily occurrence. For over 90% of sufferers, these attacks are debilitating and they cannot work or live their normal lives until it is over. Depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders are common and over 20% of sufferers are disabled, unable to hold down a job, or go to school.
According to studies done by the Migraine Research Foundation, in 2015, the U.S. spent over $36 billion in healthcare and lost productivity due to Migraines. That number includes $5.4 billion in medical costs alone treating the 38 million diagnosed cases of Migraines in our country. This is a staggering number and many are not able to afford the medication necessary to control the symptoms that are negatively impacting their life. Are there alternative treatments available for Migraines? Yes there are. Many find relief through diet changes, herbal remedies, life style changes, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, and Neurofeedback, to name a few. At Harmonized Brain Centers in Nashville, we provide a treatment called LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback); a pain free, non-invasive treatment using low frequency radio waves to disrupt the pattern of brain waves that may not be working efficiently, allowing them to reset into a more effective and efficient way and stop Migraines from occurring. After just a few short treatments, many clients report their headaches to be less frequent, less intense, and shorter, and many go on to be headache free in only 10 to 12 sessions. LENS also helps to quiet the brain, allowing for better sleep, less anxiety, and often lifts the cloud of depression that goes along with Migraines. After an initial brain map that takes about an hour, subsequent treatments only take about a half hour a week; leaving you feeling relaxed and clear, ready to take on the world. If you are interested in a FREE consultation to discuss how we can help you with your Migraines, please call us at (615) 331-8762. Or visit: www.harmonizedbraincenterstn.com
Our daughter was failing at School because of Migraines, until we discovered LENS Neurofeedback. “We brought our 14 year old daughter to Harmonized Brain Centers because of her extremely debilitating, constant migraines that she has had after a slip on the ice two years prior. She had been on medication with limited success and we were desperate to find better results for her. Within three weeks of LENS, her migraines had subsided, she was sleeping better and felt more clear headed and more focused in school. As a side note, she had always been a high achiever in math but after her fall, she had sort of leveled out and while still making ok grades, it wasn’t coming as easy for her as before. We had assumed that she had just leveled out in her ability but after the LENS, she is once again grade levels above where she was and a happy and successful teenager. There is no way to express our thanks and gratitude to LENS and to Sheri for giving our daughter her life back.” - AW 18
What does love mean?
How to be loving by your own Nature Google reports there are 97 million and counting songs about love. Everything from finding love, losing love, wishing for love, missing a loved one, searching for the right kind of love, and even desiring to escape love. Seeking love is the most innate longing with every human being. What does it mean to be loving? We may think of love in terms of creating relationships with people around us. But what if love did not need the cooperation of those around you? What if love could be your quality – a quality that emanated from within you and touched everything around you?
S
adhguru, yogi, mystic, visionary and the foremost authority on yoga provides insight on how be loving by your own nature.
Sadhguru: There is a lot of emotion attached to the subject of love and lots of fanciful things have been said about it, but I would like to bring it down to the mechanics of love. For example, people are saying, “God loves you,” but does anybody really know whether God loves or not? Love is a human emotion. Human beings are capable of love when they are willing. But unfortunately, we want to export everything that is beautiful in our life to heaven and live wantonly on this planet. Love, joy, blissfulness – all these are human possibilities. So let us not talk about divine love; let us talk about human love. Generally, when hormones hijack your intelligence, people think they have fallen in love – that is one aspect. When you say “me,” “myself,” what is it that you are referring to? One thing is your physical body, another thing is your mind – the way you think, yet another thing is your emotion – the way you feel, and the energy which drives the other three things. This is what you are calling as “me.” When this “me” feels pleasant on different levels, we call it by different names. If your emotions become very pleasant, we call it love. Love is just one aspect of life. We have given so much importance to it simply because for a long time, in most people emotion has been the strongest part. Even today, though people consider themselves
intellectual, still emotion is the strongest part in most of them – not their intellect, their body, or their energy. So making that pleasant is very important. Otherwise, it will find unpleasant expressions. If you are feeling very pleasant, suddenly you become like a flower. When somebody is in love, if you look at their faces, suddenly they look like a flower because they are feeling so pleasant within themselves. Whoever you are in love with, they may not even be aware of it – it does not matter. You are in love, that’s all that matters. It is your emotion. It is the way you are. Love is not something that you do. Love is something that you are. Either you can use somebody as a support to make yourself loving or you can simply become loving. After all, it is not somebody else’s quality, it is your quality. You are using the 19
other person as a key to open this up. But you can also open it up from inside without the help of the other person. Then it is definitely more enduring because when you open it with the other person’s help – nobody on this planet is 100% reliable. If you are trying to extract joy, love and pleasantness out of somebody, this is going to be disastrous for both the people. I am not saying it is better to live alone. I am saying the way you are should be determined by you. If this is so and you are here to share your love with people, if you are feeling wonderful and you want to share this with somebody, then it will be very beautiful. Foot Detoxing
Time to try Foot Detoxing? Imagine sitting in a comfortable chair, sipping a warm cup of tea, listening to calming music and soaking those long -suffering feet of yours for a half hour. Sounds like bliss, right? And what if someone told you by doing this you will be helping your body and brain to detox and be more efficient and healthy. Sheri Rowney of Harmonized Brain centers (pictured) looks at how Foot Detoxing works.
I
onized foot baths is a way of easily and naturally removing toxins and wastes from your body in an unobtrusive, comfortable environment. It works by using a dual electrode module composed of a positive anode – where the electrical current flows in, and a negatively charged ion where the current flows out - so an electromagnetic field in the foot bath is created. These energized ions behave like magnets and draw toxins out the body via the 2,000 pores that are in the bottom of your feet. Ion Cleanse is supported by the idea that organs such as the kidneys, liver, lungs, brain etc., hold onto toxins, especially heavy metals, and that these organs need help in releasing and detoxing from them. During a foot detox session, it is believed that only about 10% of these toxins are released at a time but that through a few sessions, more and more will be removed. During the session, your feet are placed in a tub of warm water with the ionic array. A few sprinkles of salt are added and immediately you will see the water around the array begin to bubble as the ions become activated. The water will start to change to a rusty color almost immediately, simply a reaction of the ionizer to the salt. But then other things begin to happen. As the minutes pass, a ‘scum’ will appear on the water’s edge, evidence that the detoxification has begun. Following a color chart provided, we can help you identify where the toxins may be coming from. When your 30 minute session is complete, you simply wash your feet, drink a nice glass of water and leave feeling very calm and relaxed. There are a few restrictions to the foot detoxification: If you are pregnant, nursing, have had an organ transplant, or have any electrical component (such as a pacemaker), you cannot do the ionized foot bath. Foot detoxes can be done up to twice a week for 14 times, then it is recommended that you take a two week break before beginning them again.
top signs you may be suffering from a build-up of toxicity • Sugar cravings • Low or inconsistent energy • Bloating or gas • Caffeine addiction • Binge eating or drinking • Mood swings/ irritability/anxiety • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating • Fluid retention
Resting your feet in a relaxing bowl of warm water, the normal foot detox session lasts 30 minutes.
As you progress through your treatments, what you see in the water will change, with the goal being for the water to be clearer with less surface material present. We live in a world where toxins are present everywhere; in our environment, food and water not to mention the products we come in to contact with on a day to day basis. Our bodies are amazing machines that work diligently to run smoothly and efficiently but when presented with a constant barrage of toxicity, it can become overwhelmed and sick. Clean eating, exercise and a healthy regimen can help overcome these pollutants and keep us well and functioning at our best but maybe a Foot Detox might just assist your body in this on going battle Come by and try it today at Harmonized Brain Centers of Nashville, you’ll be amazed at what you see! Call 615 331 8762 to make an appointment. Each 30 minute session costs just $30, with discounts for booking multiple sessions. Eye care
Another first for WANG Vision The state’s first 3D SMILE® procedure was performed at the internationally renowned Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center in Nashville, TN, USA. It represents the first major advancement in laser vision technology in 25 years.
About Dr. Ming Wang: He is a Harvard & MIT graduate (MD, magna cum laude), a philanthropist, and Kiwanis’ Nashvillian of the Year. Dr .Wang is one of the few laser eye surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He is the CEO of Aier-USA, a new U.S.– China healthcare venture that brings investments from China to build eye clinics here and create jobs in the U.S. As a teenager, Ming fought valiantly to escape one of history’s darkest eras – China’s Cultural Revolution – during which millions of innocent youth were deported to remote areas to face a life sentence of poverty and hard labor. Through his own tenacity and his parents’ tireless efforts to provide a chance of freedom for their son, Ming eventually made his way to America with $50 in his pocket, against all odds, he would earn a PhD in laser physics and graduate with the highest honors from Harvard Medical School and MIT.

MILE® stands for SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction. During a SMILE® procedure, a femtosecond laser with precise short pulses is used to make a small incision in the cornea to create a disc-shaped piece of tissue. This tissue will be removed. SMILE® has several advantages over LASIK; it is minimally invasive and no flap is needed. The laser incision is much smaller (only 5 millimeters), compared to 20 millimeters for LASIK. Post-surgical dry eye issues are also reduced, compared to LASIK. Margaret Coleman is a manager at the Bluebird Cafe, Nashville’s famous hangout, which was
prominently featured in the ABC TV drama “Nashville.” She has had poor vision all her life (worse than legally blind). Ms. Coleman became the state’s first patient to receive 3D SMILE® and she is thrilled about her newfound freedom.
To date, Dr. Wang has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 physicians. He has published 9 textbooks, an article in the world-renowned journal “Nature,” holds several U.S. patents, and performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D SMILE and 3D LASIK (18+), 3D Forever Young Lens Surgery (50+), and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). He established a 501c(3) non-profit charity, which to date has helped patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. Dr. Wang is the recipient of the Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Chinese American Physicians. A new smile in one day Tooth loss is a major problem for many people. But there are solutions that can help put that smile back! Dr. Jaime A. Romero Jr, D.D.S. suggests a quick, easy and time saving procedure. Why Choose All-on-4? Aside from the obvious benefits, there are many other reasons to choose an All-on-4 replacement. One of the biggest incentives is the fact that the implants become completely permanent. This is thanks to titanium’s unique ability to fuse with bone. You’ll never have to worry about your new teeth slipping or sliding while you’re speaking, which can inspire greater confidence. The All-on-4 setup also makes eating much easier than with traditional dentures. Since the teeth are anchored permanently, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy apples, carrots, nuts, and beyond. It’s by far the most natural-feeling setup. You don’t have to worry about messy adhesive glues or strips with an All-on-4 set, either. Since they don’t need to be removed for cleaning, you can rest assured that you won’t forget to remove them on schedule.
Ready to Smile?
M
illions of Americans suffer from tooth loss. In fact, experts estimate that as many as 35 million people have no upper or lower teeth at all. Have you been dreaming about a brand new smile to combat your tooth loss? Are you hesitant to pursue tooth replacement options because of the length of time and number of procedures it takes? All-on-4 is a modern system for changing teeth that can be done very quickly and efficiently, saving you time and money.
What is All-on-4? All-on-4 refers to a combination treatment that involves dental implants and implant-anchored dentures. During this procedure, four titanium
rods are embedded within your jaw. They’ll be strategically placed by your surgeon for maximum efficiency to fit your mouth. Once the implants are securely installed, custom high-quality dentures are anchored to them. The name “All-on-4” comes from the fact that only four implants are needed to securely hold a whole set of teeth. This means you could have both your upper and lower sets replaced with only four implants in each setting. In the past, dental implants were used for every single tooth. As you can imagine, this would be significantly more painful and time consuming than an All-on-4 procedure. As a result, you can get a brand new smile in just one day. 22
If you’re considering an All-on-4 set, call us today. Our surgeons would love to meet with you and discuss the process in-depth. We can answer any questions you may have. Remember, the sooner you call, the sooner you’ll have the smile you’ve always dreamed of. All we need is one day!
