Essential Oils

Herbs and essential oils for the garden

The American Cancer Society (ACS) announces a new project: ResearcHERS In March, The American Cancer Society (ACS) announced its new initiative to raise funds that support womenled cancer research. ResearcHERS: Women Fighting Cancer, is billed as “a cancer-fighting program that empowers women [...] to raise money for female researchers.” ResearcHERS of Tennessee is being led by Jenny Stripling, executive director for the American Cancer Society in Tennessee. “One brilliant idea or concept can save countless lives. Cancer doesn’t discriminate, and the next big discovery may come from a scientist funded by the ResearcHERS initiative,” said Stripling. “Our goal is to raise $125,000 in our first year, and I am thrilled to be

It’s that time of year where we have warmer weather and longer days, and Sheila McGinnis looks at how to use essential oils in the garden…

carrying the torch for this inaugural ResearcHERS campaign,” Stripling added. The ACS supports all cancer types, and any applications for grants are considered (regardless of cancer type, the focus of study and gender of the applicant). Once the best research has been identified, ResearcHERS funds will be given to women-led grants. According to the ACS, at the moment, half of its grantees are women. To join this initiative, the ACS is encouraging applicants to sign up (or recommend someone) for the grant and become an ambassador for the project. irst, let’s talk about the garden. I detest chemicals in my yard! Some chemicals not only cause cancer but kill vital nutrients in our dirt and are killing off our pollinators (such as bees and the butterfly population). There are also pests that kill or damage the plants you worked so hard to grow. This is where herbs and essential oils come in. Below are some herbs you can grow in your garden that are not only beautiful but can be used medicinally and repel bugs and larvae. Rosemary – This aromatic herb has so many health benefits, including being antifungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic. It is a wonderful herb to add to stews, chicken, and fish. It repels larvae that can damage your plants, and it also attracts pollinators such as butterflies. It is one plant that doesn’t require a lot of water, and it does well in the ground and in pots. Since it’s a perennial, you do not have to replant it every year.

Float Horizen hosts Soma classes There is a new type of wellness class now available in Nashville. Soma, short for ‘somatics’ is a class that helps participants through breath work and mindful movements. There are three Soma classes currently available at Float Horizen in East Nashville. Soma Restorative, which looks to replicate movements in everyday life. Soma Balance, a class that focuses on isometric movements and toning. Finally, Soma Peak, which uses ‘primal flow’ for safer training environments during running and lifting, and is a more intensive workout. The class is hosted by Adam Poffenberger, certified holistic personal trainer, lifestyle wellness coach, a daily soma practitioner and co-founder of Grizzly Retreat. ‘We provide balance for those who seek it with, through a platform of education, fitness, conscious nutrition, and sustainability experiences. We usually do this outdoors, but during the colder months, we wanted to find somewhere to partner up and still have that same sensory perception, and Float Horizen has a perfect atmosphere for this.” The meditation and breathing within the

Soma classes are also practices for the floating tanks found at Float Horizen. “It’s wonderful for both the mind and body, you’ll get a lot of stress relief [from floating], just as you will from the Soma experiences. When you’re floating, it’s the best place to practice and when you’re in there, all you can hear is your heartbeat and your breath. You really connect with yourself,” he explains. Although each of the classes has a different theme, Soma practice is rooted in an individual’s connection to their own body. “It focuses on the body for biofeedback, rather than capacity. We’re looking for the sensations and reactions happening within the body, we’re not concerned with perfect poses. And within the class, we do a lot of breathing.” Grizzly Retreats will be hosting Soma classes at Float Horizen until late Spring. Adam adds that this is a great complementary class for those who already enjoy practicing Yoga and Pilates. “We’re looking for a connection for the mind, the body, and the breath.” For more information, visit www.floathorizen.com and www. grizzlyretreat.com.

Peppermint – Oh how I love this herb. It makes a delightful tea, and you can add it to a glass of water or to your lemonade. In the garden, it will repel aphids, flies, beetles, and some spiders, ants, and mosquitoes. It too is a perennial. Lavender – Another perennial that that will attract pollinators. The beautiful flowers and the scent itself is enough reason to plant this herb, but it also has so many health benefits including restful sleep, relaxing to sore muscles, and to calm anxiety. Also, did you know fleas hate the scent of lavender? So many essential oils can actually be used topically on plants to repel bugs, but also to get rid of pesky weeds. Natural DIY bug repellent: In a 4 oz. glass or stainless steel (not plastic) spray bottle pour 2 oz. of witch hazel or vodka and 2 oz. of distilled water and add to it 20 drops of Lavender essential 5

oil (EO), 10 drops of cedarwood EO, 15 drops of peppermint (EO) and five drops of lemongrass or citronella EO. Spray all over clothes and exposed body (never in the face). Natural weed killer: In a 16 oz spray bottle pour in about 14 oz of white distilled vinegar and 1.5 oz of liquid Castille soap (I use Dr. Bronn’s peppermint) add to it 10 drops of cinnamon EO, five drops of orange EO, and five drops of wintergreen EO (if you only have peppermint it will work as well). Shake well and spray on the weeds as often as you need. Natural help for allergies: So I am not a huge proponent of ingesting essential oils, but I have done this for years and it helps. NOTE: I only use organic essential oils from a company I trust when ingesting oils. One drop each either under the tongue (or in a vegetable capsule) of lemon, lavender, and peppermint. You can also make a roller-ball with carrier oil, five drops of the above and add five drops of cedarwood to rub on your feet in the morning and at night (cedarwood has a calming effect on the body). As always herbs and essential oils are powerful natural medicines and although it’s natural, can have adverse reactions if you’re on medicines as well as if you have health concerns. Always check with a professional before using.

Tennessee encourages immunization

Natural treatments

The Tennessee Department of Health is spending $400,000 on a campaign, as a way of promoting immunization and ensuring that Tennesseans of all ages are projected from a range of diseases, including Measles. There have been numerous reports and studies that prove there is no link between immunization and autism, something long claimed by the ‘anti-vax’ movement. The argument that links autism and the measles vaccination has led to a significant rise in the disease across the country. A study was published in Denmark earlier on this year, which is reported to be the largest one ever undertaken as it surveyed over 600,000 children. Its aim was to investigate

tchy eyes, runny nose, congestion, and sneezing… If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you are not alone. Nashville ranks in the top 30 “Allergy Capitals”, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Our immune system is designed to keep us safe and ward off illness, but sometimes it can mistake an innocuous particle, such as pollen, for a foreign invader, like bacteria or a parasite. Pollen and other usually harmless particles can cause your immune system to get over stimulated. Actually, your allergic reaction is your body’s way of trying to protect itself from these tiny invaders. Your overactive immune system then becomes overly sensitive to these allergens, and you experience symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, congestion, and itchy eyes. More than 2,000 years ago, classical Greek physician Hippocrates stated that “All disease begins in the gut”. Thousands of years later, research has confirmed that 7080% of your immune system is located in your gut. Naturally, your gut plays a huge role in your immune health. That’s why the key to reducing seasonal allergies is to heal your gut, in order to restore your immune system’s balance. Here are several of the natural treatments I use to help my clients’ allergy symptoms:

• Whole food, anti-inflammatory diet: A healthy organic diet low in Omega-6 fatty acids, high in Omega-3 fatty acids, and natural anti-inflammatory foods can help to reduce your allergy symptoms. Increase your consumption of turmeric, onions, pineapple, oranges, and wild Alaskan salmon. • Eat a variety of fermented foods: Fermented foods and probiotics can help bring your immune system back into balance. Try these probiotic-rich fermented foods for optimal gut and immune health:

yogurt, kefir, kombucha, miso, sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh and natto. • Local honey and bee pollen: Ingesting local honey and pollens will potentially help the body to build resistance to seasonal allergens and, in turn, reduce allergy symptoms. There are a number of supplements that can alleviate symptoms: • Balance your overactive immune system with Reishi mushroom by Fungi Perfecti.

and evaluate “the hypothesized link between the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism [that] continues to cause concern and challenge vaccine uptake.” The details of the project were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in March. “The study strongly supports that MMR vaccination does not increase the risk for autism, does not trigger autism in susceptible children, and is not associated with clustering of autism cases after vaccination,” it reports. According to numerous news outlets, Tennessee will start the promotions in May, continuing through to October 2020. For more information, visit www.tn.gov/health.html

Mental health

Then VegFest is the event for you! The fourth annual VegFest will take place at the Nashville Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 6th, 2019. Speaking to Nashville Health & Wellness Magazine, Helene Greenberg, the organizer of VegFest, highlighted one of the most important attractions of the day: food! “Attendees can expect to eat a lot! The best way to help people realize that veganism is awesome is to feed them! So, there will be a lot of food at this event.” VegFest will also feature a number of leading vegan speakers and live demonstrations, including Korin Sutton, 3x pro-vegan bodybuilder, and trainer, cooking with vegan culinary instructor JL Fields and Lenore Braford and Paul Drake from Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge.

The dangerous downsides of perfectionism Many of us believe perfectionism is positive — but really it is linked to a host of health issues, remarks Dr. Lisa Webb…

E

xperts tend to define perfectionism as “a combination of excessively high personal standards and overly critical self-evaluations.” Working hard, being committed, and diligent are all desirable features. But for a perfectionist, those are really a symptom or a side product of what perfectionism is. Perfectionism isn’t about high standards. It’s about unrealistic standards. Researchers indicate that perfectionistic tendencies have been linked to a laundry list of clinical issues: depression and anxiety (even in children), self-harm, social anxiety disorder and agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, binge eating, anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic fatigue syndrome, insomnia, hoarding, dyspepsia, chronic headaches and even suicide. So when is striving for “the best” actually harmful?

“Healthy” vs “toxic” perfectionism

Some researchers say there is adaptive, or ‘healthy’ perfectionism (characterized by having high standards, motivation, and discipline) versus a maladaptive, or ‘unhealthy’ version (when your best never seems good enough and not meeting goals frustrates you). This is where perfectionism gets complicated. Perfectionism, they argue, isn’t defined by working hard or setting high goals. It’s that critical inner voice. Perfectionism is actually a self-defeating way to move through the world. Making (and admitting) mistakes are a necessary part of growing and learning and being human. I

Overcoming perfectionism

Overcoming perfectionism can be challenging for many because the behaviors have often led to positive results. To overcome perfectionism when we have recognized our behavior is actually harmful, try these five approaches:

1. Reevaluate your standards Are your standards worth the cost in terms of time, negative emotions and adding new members to the already long list of people who can’t stand dealing with your expectations? Is the cost of perfectionism to your health worth it? 2. Go for good enough. Aiming for perfection usually winds up in a project or something else never being finished. So go for good enough instead. Find a balance for yourself where you do good work and don’t slack off but at the same time don’t get lost in trying to improve and polish something too much. 3. Laugh. About anything. Do it often. Having a sense of humor about ourselves and our actions, especially embarrassing or disappointing experiences, doesn’t have to be a shield or form of protection. 4. Forgive, forgive, forgive. Most of all, yourself. Forgiveness releases us from fear-based thoughts and emotions. It is the gateway to surrendering our perception of control over our lives and over the actions of others.

There will also be yoga classes going on throughout the day. Vendors will be exhibiting their products, foods, and clothing, so there will be something for everyone! VegFest has partnered with Compost Nashville to make sure it is a zero waste event. The organizers urge festival-goers to bring their own bags and bottles on the day. Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased at www.nashvillevegfest.com.

Tennessee governor proposes substantial funding for mental health initiatives

5. Surround yourself by free spirits.

If you can’t find free spirits in your circle of friends, then read about them or watch movies about dreamers and risktakers—people who’ve failed or made huge mistakes only to overcome them and create an even better life than they could have imagined. The pursuit of perfection becomes a vicious cycle – and, because it’s impossible to be perfect we can actually set ourselves up for failure by trying to always be perfect. If you need assistance with perfectionism or changing your life approach contact….

Tennessee governor Bill Lee is proposing millions of dollars to support mental health initiatives. In his State of the State Address, Lee outlined that within the state’s budget, he is recommending an increase of $11million to Tennessee’s ‘Behavioral Health Safety Net’ and regional mental health institutes. These initiatives would aid thousands of people in Tennessee who do not have health insurance.

For more help: contact Dr. Lisa M. Webb at the Body & Mind Consulting Associates Group: www.bodymindtn.com. Her latest book: “Boardroom to Bedroom, Using your Executive Success for your Marriage” is available at www.amazon.com 8

Lee remarked that Tennessee’s suicide rate is 20% higher than the national US average, a reason for a $1.1 million investment and partnership with the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, which will establish a new regional outreach model and support the existing efforts of the Department of Mental Health. There will also be more funding for housing and support for those with mental health issues. “Nearly 300,000 Tennesseans are facing serious mental health challenges, and far too many are slipping through the cracks,” said Lee in his speech. “I made a vow on the campaign trail to strengthen the mental health safety net and I intend to do just that.”

Tim McGraw to write a new health-focused book

Country music star, Tim McGraw has announced a new book entitled ‘Grit and Grace’. In a conversation with People magazine, he explained how the last decade of his life has shifted his mentality towards fitness. “I’ve gone through a physical transformation in the last 10 years, but it’s not just my appearance that has changed. My mind is clearer, my sense of purpose is sharper, and my relationships are deeper.” According to the publishers, the book will outline Tim’s fitness jour-

ney, while also offering readers practical and personal tips that he has picked up along the way. “Consistent physical exercise helps me bring focus to my life and to the people who mean the most to me. That’s something we all want. And I believe it’s something that is available to anyone who wants it, regardless of their level of fitness. I want this book to help people find what works for them by sharing the mental and physical approach that has worked for me.” The book will be published in early November.

Tennessee gym tax repeal moves forward Last month, Governor Lee proposed funds in his budget that would offset the difference if the state of Tennessee repealed the ‘gym tax’. The current legislation means that small fitness centers, health clubs, and gyms pay almost 10% in tax. Those critical of the ‘amusement tax’ argue that it unfairly targets small businesses. The fiscal note estimates Tennessee will lose almost $21 million if the tax is eliminated. The proposed tax cut has received bipartisan approval in House and now moves forward to the Senate Finance committee.

MOMMA’s GOAL

Eat two to three servings of lean protein a day such as fresh fish, seafood, free range hormone free poultry (without the skin), eggs, dried beans, pasteurized low fat dairy, and soy products.

Eating Healthy For Moms To Be

Proteins found in meats are made up of amino acids. These are the “building blocks” of our body’s cells, especially those powering your immune system. When you do not consume enough protein white blood cells go to war with bacteria in your body, resulting in fewer cells being made. This leaves momma and baby more prone to infection.

Lindsay Opiey

Are you a mom-to-be and want to avoid getting sick during those extensive nine months of pregnancy? Instead of opening up your medicine cabinet when you sniffle, how about opening the refrigerator door before symptoms start and eating immune enhancing foods?

A

ccording to the American Dietetic Association, “Some of the key components of a health-promoting lifestyle during pregnancy include consumption of a variety of foods in accordance with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005; and timely vitamin and mineral supplementation.” By adhering to these guidelines and the “Basic Rules of Fridge Physics” listed below you will create a defensive powerhouse against common illnesses so you and baby can soar through nine months with no hiccups or “spit- ups.” Follow the Three Basic Rules of Fridge Physics to obtain the best choices for mom and baby.

MOMMA’s GOAL

MOMMA’s GOAL

Eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day.To maximize vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants consumed, shoot for two different colored vegetables and fruits at each meal. Filling your plate with fruits and vegetables especially those containing Vitamins A and C is essential in providing antioxidants that promote immune function. These nutrients kill invading bacteria so that lymphocytes (cells that attack germs) can do their job. Excellent examples include farm fresh and organic: peaches, oranges, kiwi, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, carrots, sweet potatoes, sweet peppers, tomatoes, spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage, and avocados.

Eat one pasteurized product a day containing live cultures. Your final fridge focus is consuming friendly bacteria found in yogurt, kefir, cheeses, pasteurized sweet acidophilus milk, and cereals. These products provide your immune system with prebiotics and probiotics that stimulate immune cells in the gastrointestinal tract to colonize and resist invasion from enemy germs viruses. By following the Three Fridge Physics during pregnancy you now have set up your body with the right resources to sustain a sickness free nine months. Your body will thank you, and most importantly so will your baby.

Healthy eating

Optimizing your health through nutrition Lacy Wright, dietician, lifestyle eating and performance (LEAP) therapist and speaker at the upcoming Nashville Health & Wellness Fest, reveals how changing her diet saved her life…

S

adly enough, it is no surprise that today’s medical statistics point to a rise in obesity, diabetes, chronic illness, and cancer. The average diet reflects a high concentration of sugars, processed grains, conventional meat, dairy, eggs, and canola/soy/corn oil – as opposed to a lower percentage in consumption of vegetables, whole fruit, beans and nuts, whole grains, and healthy fats. The prevalence of such diets high in sugar, processed foods, and conventional meat and dairy can lead to inflammation and create a host of diseases. Inflammation is linked to an increased incidence of cancer, diabetes, pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, autoimmune diseases, and arthritis. With so many diet options gaining popularity in today’s culture, how do we know which to choose? What is the truth when it comes to choosing foods that truly nourish our health for a lifetime? I encourage everyone I know to eat a mostly plantbased diet (up to 75% of each meal should be mostly vegetables); to greatly reduce or eliminate sugar,

dairy, and refined/processed food; and to focus on the right kind of fat and protein. As a registered dietitian, licensed dietitian nutritionist, and certified LEAP therapist, I am a firm believer that what we put into our bodies can either promote healing or promote disease – and that nutrition affects every part of our body from our cells to our genetic expression. I know this from my professional experience, but I also know it because of my personal journey. My symptoms began when I was four years old. I was always fatigued and my mother knew something was not quite right. She had me tested for diabetes, which came back negative. My symptoms continued and multiplied for years and I was chronically ill. When I was 14 years old, I was told that I was suffering from a virus that mimicked mono and that I had an ulcer in my stomach causing my stomach pain. At that time, I was also prescribed a thyroid medication. As more time passed, more symptoms presented, and just as my medical team was ruling out Leukemia, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. 11

It was upon this diagnosis where I first fell in love with the concept of food as medicine. After I was diagnosed and changed my diet, my life transformed and symptoms began to go away. A gluten-free diet was just the first stepping stone on my healing journey. Along the way I made the switch to organic produce, grass-fed and pastured meats, and removed sugar and other inflammatory foods from my diet. I know without any doubt that I would not be living the life I am now had it not been for the gift of nourishing and healing food. Changing my diet saved my life, and I became a dietitian so I could help others who are struggling like I was. My advisory role with the Meals 4 Health and Healing program of The Heimerdinger Foundation is a natural one. Believing that what you eat directly affects your body’s ability to heal, I was on board as soon as I learned about the organization’s mission to provide nutrient-dense meals of anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting foods free of charge to people in cancer treatment. This caring nonprofit and its army of volunteers come together each week to prepare over 500 meals for people in our community who are facing one of the toughest times in their lives. I know how it feels to lose hope. I’ve been there. I am inspired by their mantra that “food is medicine.” I have seen time and time again how supporting the body’s natural detox pathways and removing foods that are inflammatory can make a huge difference in the way a person feels and how their body functions. I am so grateful to be representing The Heimerdinger Foundation at this year’s Nashville Health and Wellness Fest on June 1. I’ll be discussing what is wrong with America’s standard diet, followed by a detailed description of how to optimize your diet to battle inflammation, to reduce the risk of cancer, and to promote healing in your body. It’s easier than it sounds. Think “baby steps” – incremental ways that you, too, can learn to choose a more nutritious diet to optimize your health. Looking forward to seeing you there! Anxiety and mental health

Anxiety no more! Cortney Edmondson, an activist, advocate and motivational speaker, discusses her mental health journey, and the tools that helped her overcome her anxiety. night, I slept like a baby, and that got my attention because I thought, ‘What is this? Why did I sleep so well?’ And then I became obsessed with sharing my story with people, and I found that every time I did, they would share a very intimate thing as well. As I was liberating myself by talking, it was giving others a safe space too.” Through the process of speaking to individuals who had experienced a range of trauma, Cortney started a platform for them to share their stories, entitled Thursday Thrive. Here, people from different backgrounds had the space to discuss their trauma narratives in order to grow. “Thursday Thrive is a project that showed me what my purpose was. And, it worked amazingly, it liberated a lot of people, and it was such a message of hope for so many,” she explains. As a result of these experiences, Cortney began her journey working with trauma survivors, engaging with local communities and encouraging others to share their stories. “I speak on childhood trauma but also resiliency, overcoming adversity and finding purpose in your pain. I think that no matter what you’ve been through, every single time you face adversity, there are lessons that you can take from it. Most people don’t look for it, and that’s the problem. What I have found is that if you don’t repair it, you repeat it.” Cortney has spent years researching the impact of childhood trauma, as some studies indicate that incidents that occur in the early phases on the brain’s development can have significant repercussions throughout an individual’s life. “Childhood trauma and adversity is the best predictor of long term health problems. It’s a better predictor than genetics would show you,” she remarks. Cortney will be sharing her story at the Nashville Health & Wellness Fest, which will take place on June 1 at Vanderbilt Recreation and Wellness Center. Those who attend Cortney’s workshop will be inspired to recognize and challenge the social stigmas surrounding mental health and more specifically, anxiety. “Over 40 million people in the United States struggle with anxiety,” she says. “I have walked in those shoes and know how desperately people want to overcome it. I’m excited to share my experience and equip people with wisdom and tools that they can use to break free from the mental prison that anxiety holds them captive to.” One of the many tools she suggests is to bring shameful secrets to light by sharing them with a safe person. “When secrets are buried, destruction is present and sometimes that manifests in bitterness, rage or anxiety,” she explains. “The day I decided to boldly share my biggest secret, albeit with a stranger, was the day I started to take control of my mental health,” she says.

or Cortney Edmondson, it all started with a simple conversation with a stranger. “I’m a Nashville native and I love to meet people who are new to Nashville. I met this guy, and he didn’t know anybody, so we grabbed dinner one night and he started to share his childhood trauma story, where he described being raised by his father and that his mother was an alcoholic,” she recalls. “It resonated with me because that was my story, and I had never met anyone that was a normal, successful human being that had a similar story to me.” This interaction encouraged Cortney to discuss her own childhood, something she hadn’t felt comfortable speaking about before. “It created a safe place, and trust, so for the first time, I shared my story, and it was with a stranger! It allowed me to talk about what I had been through, I let him know very little, but to me, it was a huge deal, as I had never done that before.” For years, Cortney had struggled with insomnia – something that she and multiple doctors saw as a result of her stressful job. However, following on from this conversation, she was able to sleep better than she had in years. “That 12

HELP FOR ADD/ADHD, DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, STRESS THAT’S: Don’t miss Cortney’s workshop at the Nashville Health & Wellness Fest on June 1st.

Anxiety-no more! 3.30-4.15pm

Anxiety affects approximately 40 million people in the United States. We all know someone who struggles with it. So, what causes anxiety? Why are so many people anxious? What can we do about it? Cortney Edmondson struggled with severe anxiety that manifested as debilitating insomnia. For over a year, her anxiety caused major implications on her work, personal life and even her health. After a lot of work and practice, Cortney has gained powerful tools and solutions that have helped her overcome anxiety. Now, she chooses to empower and equip others to do the same. This workshop will help attendees understand why we get anxious and what happens in our brains and bodies when anxiety sets in. It will also give participants practical tools and exercises to empower them to better manage or even break free from their anxiety. What you’ll take away from this workshop: • Introduction to the body’s stress response system • Understand what causes anxiety and why it affects so many people • Breakdown the social barriers and misconceptions around anxiety and mental health • Understand the implications of anxiety both mentally and physically • Gain practical tools to manage anxiety and retrain your brain Cortney Edmondson in addition to being a top motivational speaker, is also a State of Tennessee Certified Public Accountant. She was nominated as one of Nashville’s Top 30 Under 30 for her philanthropic efforts in Middle Tennessee.

The benefits of floating

Float the stress away Floating is emerging as a favorite way to de-stress and relax. To find out more, editor Rachel Rowney visited Float Horizen in Nashville...

First time floating? Here are some tips: • Use the earplugs provided. • There is nothing worse than salt water in your eyes! Use the headrest provided for extra support. • If you’re nervous, keep the light on throughout your session. • Don’t drink caffeine beforehand.

T

he popularity of flotation therapy, often within a sensory deprivation tank, has grown significantly in recent years. With claims that it is a powerful way to re-center yourself in a busy world, I was intrigued to try out a session and experience it for myself. Each floatation tank contains 1000 pounds of Epsom salt, and the water is kept at what they refer to as ‘skin-receptor’ neutral, which means it perfectly complements your body’s natural temperature. This is all designed to make your body relax, and your mind calm down from 21st-century life. Zane Ritter, the owner of Float Horizen, outlines the many advantages of floating, a technique that was developed in the early 1960s. “To me, the primary benefit is stress relief, tuning out all the noise in our day-to-day reality. Once you allow yourself to be in a state that is essentially free from distractions, it allows your mind and body to become very relaxed.”

“Floating was invented in the early 1960s as a way to explore consciousness and its different levels. In the past decade, it’s caught on with a lot of mainstream science and research, looking at how well it interacts with our overall well being and mental state,” says Zane. The team at Float Horizen report that the floatation tanks are popular with musicians and authors, who wish to declutter their minds and work on new projects. My experience floating was the first time was very relaxing. The Enneagram personality test

An insight into the Enneagram The Enneagram personality test has emerged as a hugely popular model and tool for individuals to understand themselves and communicate with others. Editor Rachel Rowney explores the new craze for knowing ‘your type’.

I

f in the last year, you have heard friends, colleagues or family members referring to themselves as a single digit number, or a ‘type’, you may have encountered the Enneagram model. Although the concept of typologies with the Enneagram has been around for decades, there has been a recent surge in interest in its thinking and proposition. Its structure is made of nine ‘types’ of personalities, numbered from one to nine, each with a different approach to life, a pattern of thinking, key qualities and defining characteristics. The personality model illustrates how each type differs, including their motivations, basic fear, causes of stress, strengths and weaknesses, and even communication styles. Although varied approaches to the Enneagram use subtly different language, one thing remains consistent: the nine types have distinct behavior and thought patterns, all as a result of motivations that we aren’t conscious of. David Fauvre is one of the leading experts on Enneagram and has worked with the personality model for over three decades. “I’m a psychologist, I’ve seen about every self-help model and tool out there over the years, and I have never found one that is as effective or revealing as the Enneagram. It seems to point to something that is biologically based, and I believe people are born their type, so it really gives you a road map to understand your genetic

personality type.” David explains that despite there being many theories on personalities being defined by nurture, rather than nature, in recent years this has been disproven. “It was originally hypothesized that our personalities were formed as a result of our parenting and our childhood environment, and they now know that that is largely a myth. People’s personalities and temperament are almost entirely genetic.” Liz Perez, a counselor, and certified Enneagram expert, hosted an event in Nashville, organized by Spero Dei, which spent time looking at each individual ‘type’ and how identifying which type you are can assist you in life. Liz believes that the popularity of the Enneagram is due to a level of reassurance that we are not alone in our behavioral patterns. “That is a big consideration, because I think that we do want to know we are unique, but a lot of us feel that we aren’t alone and that we aren’t the only ones [that think a certain way].” Liz also explains that Nashville is emerging as a hub for the Enneagram. “It’s becoming a hotspot, and a big part of this is that people are just bumping into it and it’s becoming used more and more. Therapists are using it, churches are using it, organizations are using it, so I do think that people are finding it to be a very good tool for connection, understanding themselves, and 20

understanding other people. I get asked to come in and help companies a lot because you are working with a team and sometimes people feel misunderstood, or confused, and there needs to be understanding.” The different personality types are a method to understand how you (and others around you) experience the world. When you are aware of your personality type, you are able to better understand the unconscious way that you see the world and others around you. The Enneagram has been around since the 1970s, but both Liz and David agree that there has been a surge in interest in the Enneagram in recent years. “I’ve been involved in Enneagram since the early 1990s and throughout most of my career, when I told people what I did, they had no idea what I was talking about. [Nowadays] the millennial generation are extremely interested in knowing who they are,” remarks David. I personally believe that the rise in popularity of the Enneagram is due to its steps towards self-improvement. The difference between this personality model (compared to Myers Briggs, for example, which shows the way you process thought rather than behavioral motivations) is that it offers tangible steps and strategies for personal growth. A significant portion of the conference hosted by Spero Dei was

David Fauvre, an Enneagram expert, outlines the nine types, with the key characteristics of each type being driven by the language used by individuals themselves. One thing that concerns me tremendously is that the vast majority of people coming to the Enneagram at this point are online, and they are taking the free quizzes that have popped up. To create an accurate Enneagram test is quite a sophisticated, difficult and takes years.” For this reason, David is offering readers of Nashville Health & Wellness Magazine a code to take his online personality test for free. Going vegan

A Q&A with Chef Charity Morgan Health & Wellness Magazine: What started you on your health and wellness journey? Charity Morgan: I’ve always been a lover of what’s natural for the body, so when Derrick [Morgan, Charity’s husband and linebacker for the Tennessee Titans] wanted to try a plant-based way of eating, it didn’t take much for me to jump on board with him. H&W: What are your other hobbies and interests? CM: I love all things creative, designing cool spaces in homes, fashion, and pleasantly pretty and plantbased food. H&W: What is your favorite thing to do in Nashville? CM: Outside of exploring more Nashville vegan options, I’m truly a homebody. Usually, when I get out it’s to take part in kid’s activities. H&W: What can attendees to Nashville H&W Fest expect from your presentation and talk? CM: People will always get an organic, unfiltered, truly transparent Charity. H&W: Who inspires you? CM: I am inspired watching the work ethic of my husband. He’s so organized and doesn’t stop until it’s completed.

Charity Morgan has spent over 15 years working as a chef and has recently hit the headlines as a result of her collaboration with several players from the Tennessee Titans, working with them on plant-based diets. Chef Charity sat down with Nashville Health & Wellness Magazine, ahead of her presentation at the Nashville Health & Wellness Fest on June 1, to discuss her transition to veganism...

H&W: What advice would you give to anyone starting out on their journey to becoming a vegan? CM: Get out of your own way. We tend to overthink and place barriers for ourselves that no one puts

there but ourselves. Plan meals. Read labels. And don’t look at what you lose, look at what you gain. There are over 20,000 edible plants in the world. Go discover new ones. H&W: What is your favorite vegan dish to cook? CM: It would be the meal I haven’t cooked yet! Something new. Something fun and something plant-based. H&W: Is there a particular vegan ingredient or brand that you particularly enjoy using in your recipes? CM: I love so many ingredients but some that come to mind are using maple syrup or date syrup to sweeten. I rarely use sugar. Nutritional yeast is amazing for a cheese-like taste. And I love using spicy ingredients such as tabasco and chipotle peppers. Citrus is a must... I love using acids to balance flavors. H&W: You’ve become known for your work with the Titans. Do you think there should be more education about the power of vegan food for athletes, rather than just focusing on ‘traditional’ protein-rich diets? CM: Absolutely! The traditional way is so old school and flawed. We have allowed marketing and media to develop what we think is “healthy” and appropriate for our bodies. It’s time for real education. Education of what we are doing to our bodies and our environment. Cows milk does not do a body good!

Thyroid health

Your thyroid is a powerhouse: Three things you should know Fitness, nutrition and lifestyle coach Angel Scott outlines the importance of understanding the role of the thyroid gland in daily health and wellness…

C

hanges in your weight even when your eating and exercise routine is consistent; feeling anxious or depressed even when there is no obvious cause; the ongoing feeling of exhaustion even after an entire night’s rest. It’s that deep sense that something is off, and it could be a sign that your thyroid is working under or overtime. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that’s located just above our collarbone. Nearly 20 million Americans are diagnosed with a thyroid disorder each year. Up to 60% of the people living with a thyroid condition are completely unaware that their unbalanced hormones could be at the center of their health struggles. It may be small, but your thyroid is a powerful organ that plays a huge role in sending and receiving messages throughout your entire body. Most symptoms start slowly but gradually get worse so, here are three thyroid essentials you should know.

Your thyroid regulates more than you realize Think of your thyroid as a mini control center. It uses iodine in the food we eat to produce and release hormones that signal every cell in our body. Everything from our heart rate, blood pressure, fertility and body temperature to our weight, skin, hair, bones, and mood can change if the small gland in our neck starts to go awry.

Hyperthyroidism vs. Hypothyroidism Your thyroid sends chemical messages that affect every cell and organ in our body. Our thyroid produces two main hormones, T3 and T4. Together this duo controls every major action in our body you can think of. And depending on the message our thyroid receives from our brain, it makes

adjustments: producing and releasing more or fewer thyroid hormones into our bloodstream. When your thyroid starts over-producing thyroid hormones, everything speeds up. Hyperthyroidism is your thyroid working like a race-car in full throttlemode and it means your thyroid is making more hormones than your body can deal with. An overactive thyroid can lead to symptoms that include: • Unexplained weight-loss • Sensitivity to hot temperatures • Trembling hands, heart palpitations • Double vision, bulging eyes • A swollen thyroid When our thyroid starts under-producing thyroid hormones, everything slows down. Hypothyroidism is your thyroid working like a snail in fatigue-mode and it means your thyroid is struggling to produce enough hormones for your body to function properly. An under-active thyroid can lead to symptoms that include: • Unexplained weight-gain • Sensitivity to cold temperatures • Hair loss • Constant feeling of exhaustion • Forgetfulness, depression Even a slight shift in thyroid hormones can cause symptoms that are hard to ignore. A subtle imbalance of these influential hormones can be managed well if diagnosed and treated correctly. But those subtle signs could be masking bigger issues like thyroid cancer and even lead to heart failure or a stroke, all of which can be fatal. A rapid heart rate, swollen or lumpy thyroid or extreme exhaustion means it’s time to get immediate help. 24

A simple blood test can determine how your current thyroid hormone levels line up with what is considered to be normal.

Thyroid Disease Can Happen to Anyone Age, gender, family history, fitness level – when it comes to thyroid conditions, there isn’t anything that automatically eliminates your risks. But there are simple ways you can boost your thyroid health (and happiness). • Swapping refined carbohydrates for more lean protein and healthy fats like coconut oil, avocado and flaxseeds can help improve hormone balance. • Avoiding common chemicals found in pesticides, nonstick cookware, and antibacterial products, which decrease thyroid function. • Adding regular exercise that helps increase your metabolism and your body’s thyroid hormone production. • Managing stress levels that can aggravate an existing thyroid condition and reduce the number of thyroid hormones our body produces. Our thyroid creates hormones that impact every process in our bodies. The sooner a thyroid condition is detected, the sooner you can begin to manage your overall health and avoid the physical and emotional havoc that can come with thyroid disorders. Brain health

What is brain health? ‘Brain health’ is a concept that is ever evolving and continues to supported by scientific research. KaTerri “Kate” Kelly from the Center for Cognitive Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center explains more. testing. There are several resources for memory screenings available, and Tennesseans ages 50 and above are eligible for free annual memory screenings at the Center for Cognitive Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. As research in brain health continues to advance, there is scientifically-validated information to help you keep your brain healthier longer utilizing the ‘Acti-v8 Your Brain model’. Foods that are good for your heart and your overall health (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and lean meats and fish) are also good for your brain. Some studies have suggested that specific vitamins and nutrients may also improve brain health.

Stay active

hat is brain health, you ask? The National Institute of Health (NIH) defines brain health as the ability to remember, learn, play, concentrate and maintain a clear and active mind. More popularly, brain health is a term used in conversation amongst aging adults and their healthcare providers when addressing the risk of cognitive decline (memory loss) during the aging process. Memory loss, a growing concern of many aging adults, is not a part of the natural aging process or progression of life and more importantly, should not be ignored. In Tennessee alone, the Alzheimer’s Association records 3,522 people who died from Alzheimer’s disease in 2017; a 244% increase since 2000. It is imperative that as you age, you monitor “forgetful moments”; if you notice more frequent occurrences of forgetfulness or, memory loss becomes a part of your daily routine, it may be time to speak with your healthcare provider about memory

Relax and reduce stress

Chronic stress is known to damage the brain and cause problems with learning and memory. Mindbody approaches like meditation, yoga, and Tai Chi have been shown to relieve symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. They also change brain structure and function and reduce inflammation in brain areas involved in attention and memory.

Control risk factors

The risk of experiencing age-related cognitive decline is influenced by age and genetics, but also by factors that you can control by adopting a healthy lifestyle and getting treatment for conditions that increase the risk of cognitive impairment. These conditions include diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and depression.

Research supports a strong link between physical activity and brain health across the lifespan. Being physically active can help you feel better, have more energy, sleep better, and improve your strength and balance.

Sleep well

Getting a good night’s sleep not only makes you feel more alert and energetic but can have longterm effects on your health. Not getting enough sleep impairs your ability to multi-task and think in creative ways, and affects memory and attention.

Exercise your brain

Just as your body needs to be exercised, so does your brain. Stimulate your mind with mentally challenging activities such as reading, playing games, doing puzzles, learning new things, taking up a hobby, or volunteering.

Bone Health

Fractures – A Major Health Risk That Is Preventable Diane Miller Mulloy (pictured) owner of Osteostrong in Nashville looks at how you can develop and keep your Bones healthy.

OsteoStrong Sessions only take about 10 minutes once per week, and won’t leave you feeling fatigued, sweaty, or sore the next day.

I

doubt any of you realize that fractures are the number one cause of hospitalization in women over 55, more than strokes, cancer or heart attacks according to a Mayo Clinic Report. Almost half of women and 1/4 of men will have a fracture in their lifetime. There are over 1.5 million fractures a year leading to more than 800,000 emergency room visits and half a million hospitalizations – many times leading to the loss of independence or even death. A man who fractures his hip has less than a one year’s life expectancy and most are never even tested for bone density. Projected costs to our healthcare system is $474 billion in next two decades. Fractures are a result of three things: bone loss, muscle atrophy and poor balance. We naturally build bone density until our mid 20s, and then begin a gradual decline followed by a dramatic decline after menopause. Osteoporosis, or weak, porous bones are linked to genetics and body type, hormones, medications, lack of exercise as a youth or teen, nutrition, smoking, eating disorders, illness, and activity level.

Consider this analogy: Building your house upon the sand leads to disaster. We all know that you should build your house upon rock. In this analogy, your skeletal system is the rock foundation of your body. In fact, your skeletal system is like rock in many ways; it represents the greatest concentration of minerals in the entire ecosystem of your physical body. Every other part of your physical body is built upon this rock foundation, your skeletal system. Your central nervous system will not allow your muscles to become stronger than what your skeletal system can handle. By the same token, your muscles will weaken as your skeletal system weakens. Research shows that despite widespread belief to the contrary, moderate exercise does NOT prevent or reverse bone loss. In fact, according to science, specifically Wolff’s Law of Bone Remodeling, only intense weight and compression triggers bone growth in an adult, something most of us are not capable of accomplishing in a gym. Likewise, studies show that taking calcium and supplements will not build bone density unless rules of Wolff’s law are met. So how can the average person strengthen their skeletal system safely? Dr. John Jacquish has actually cracked the code. He has developed a unique system that allows just about anyone at any age to experience 4.2 times their own body weight and much more without any injury. We call this Osteogenic loading and it is available at Osteostrong. It is a patented, unique musculoskeletal development system that delivers this stimulus to just about anyone. People who are experiencing this system right now are seeing improvements in their bone density as well as muscle strength, balance, posture and performance because it specifically develops the foundation of your physical body – your skeletal system. And what was once thought to be one of the most difficult systems of the human body to develop turns-out to be one of the easiest once you know the key and have the precise system to deliver it. OsteoStrong Sessions only take about 10 minutes once per week, and won’t leave you feeling 26

fatigued, sweaty, or sore the next day. The small amount of weekly effort needed to generate such incredible results are truly amazing. In fact, Osteostrong has been called the ultimate BioHack – hacking your body to heal itself. May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month. Make it your goal to get your bone density checked, eat nutritious foods, and take action so you won’t be another statistic. Author of this article, Diane Miller Mulloy is owner of area Osteostrong Franchises in Belle Meade and GreenHills as well as Regional Developer for the state of Tennessee. She is a native Tennessean and raised her family in Nashville. She is graduate of Vanderbilt University and has been active in the community as a volunteer and policy maker. Mental Health

Discover a drug free alternative for Depression, Anxiety, ADHD Harmonized Brain Center’s Nashville office has had excellent results with improving children’s mental problems, and with Anxiety, Depression and Migraines. Sheri Rowney (pictured) explains on LENS Neurofeedback can help. She will also be co-presenting a workshop on this topic at the Nashville Health and Wellness Fest.

W

ith the latest figures showing that 14% of children ages 4 to 17 nationwide and over 16% here in Tennessee are diagnosed with ADD and/or ADHD, parents are scrambling for information and resources to help their child. Many struggle with having to medicate their children with stimulants which helps the ADD/ADHD symptoms but can cause other more harmful and long lasting side effects. There is a safe, quick and easy alternative. LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) can be as effective as medication without the harmful side effects. ADD/ADHD is generally associated with the inability to focus at school; not being able to sit still and to pay attention. Often these children are reprimanded for their behavior; not being able to sit in their seats, fidgeting when they are supposed to be still; causing disruptions at inappropriate times. They can be loud and disorganized; they often interrupt when others are talking. Some-times they seem to not care that they are so disruptive. They may not be invited to parties and play dates because of their behavior. No matter how hard they try; they just

can’t seem to be able to do what is expected of them. Not only does this effect their educational needs but it also effects their self-confidence; they often feel like they don’t measure up and will never be as successful as the other kids. This lack of confidence causes long term effects as their selfimage diminishes, they often quit trying and just resign themselves to thinking they’ll never be able to measure up so it’s not worth the effort. For the last 35 years there has been a new non-medicated, non-invasive option for not only treating the symptoms of ADD/ADHD, but also in changing the brain so that the client can focus better, interact better and make better choices. Called Low Energy Neurofeedback has been in continual development since 1990. With a success rate of over 90%, it uses a small radio frequency to disrupt the brain waves and allows them to reset back into a more effective, natural pattern. Over a period of just a few sessions clients start to feel more focused, calmer and more able to make better decisions. Sessions only take a few minutes a week and results are long lasting.

This amazingly successful therapy is available at Harmonized Brain Centers. Here we combine LENS with Life Coaching, introducing skills and habit changes to go along with the more efficient brain activity. This integrative approach sets your child up for success in a natural and effective way. LENS is not only used for treating ADD/ADHD but also for people suffering with migraines, TBI, anxiety, depression, brain fog, chemo fog and memory issues. The brain is an amazing organ with the ability to change to become more efficient and effective with just a little help.

Workshop Preview: Discover a drug-free alternative for Depression, Anxiety, ADHD. Just as you go to a gym to improve the way your body works, LENS therapy does the same for your Brain. This proven technology activates the brain’s capacity for self-healing and regulation. It helps it work more efficiently, effectively and with greater clarity. LENS Therapy (LENS stands for Low Energy NeuroFeedback System) has been in constant development for over 25 years and is now practiced at some 400 centers throughout the USA and abroad. Over one million clients from infants to the elderly, and even pets, have received treatment. At the workshop you’ll see a live demonstration of LENS Neurofeedback – and discover the potential this amazing technology has, to help anyone with these conditions, as well as others like Concussion, PTSD & Migraines. Two top LENS Certified Practitioners will be explaining how the process works and how this non-drug, non-invasive therapy has more than a 95% success rate. Organic clothing

Fashion for Peace Sadhguru, yogi, mystic, founder of ISHA Foundation, and the foremost authority on yoga, explains how organic clothing can have a huge impact on the body, mind and energy.

N

ew York Fashion Week culminated with Fashion For Peace – a momentous event where Sadhguru & Isha Foundation join Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Norma Kamali, Mara Hoffman, Mimi Prober to take a step towards ecological sustainability and human wellbeing. Here, Sadhguru offers his thoughts on the importance of natural, organic clothing… If all the designers can push towards encouraging everybody to make at least 50% of their wardrobes into natural fiber, it will be a great movement to start with. Nowadays, there is a lot of talk about wearing clothing made from organically produced cotton. But human beings have always been doing that. Everything was organic. Even now, in a country like India, it largely is. Organic clothing or organic farming is not some special idea. That is the way it has always been done. It is only in the last few decades that we have given that up because someone changed it for commercial interests. I am not trying to prescribe what someone should wear, but you should look at your life with a certain freedom, without compulsions, and decide. The kind of clothes you wear can impact your physical and mental health and wellbeing. So it is important to look at what the weather’s like today and what kind of clothing would be best for your health and wellbeing. But most people are not thinking of their wellbeing. You will see, for example, in a country like India, many people walk around in forty-degrees-centigrade weather wearing black jackets and ties! What you eat, what you wear and how you live are about your wellbeing. Unfortunately, so many people just wear whatever is being put on them without look-ing at what they should wear and why.

Why organic clothing matters is because there is a huge difference in the way your body functions when you wear synthetic clothing and when you wear organic clothing. You needn’t believe anything that anyone says. Try it out and see how it feels. Wear raw silk or cotton – even your inner garments – for a week and see how your body feels. Then wear something tight and synthetic and check. You will see a big difference in the level of comfort and ease at which your body functions because there is a certain aspect to what wraps the body. Another thing is, how you can exude who you are is also enhanced or restricted by certain substances. Cotton and silk are best for your system. Particularly raw silk or cotton that is not treated in any way has a certain kind of impact. It is not that if you wear synthetic clothing you will fall dead. You can still meditate and be the same person even if you wear synthetic from top to bottom – but with a little struggle and effort. Seeing the benefits of organic cotton and taking care of the quality of your clothing may not be very practical for lots of people today because they own enough clothes for ten lifetimes. When you want to have two hundred dresses, you end up buying off the shelf. But if you bring this down to a simpler format, if you don’t mind having eight pairs of 28

clothing and managing life within that, you can choose quality over quantity. It is time more people choose quality over quantity in every sense. Only then can we save this planet. The problem right now is that people have gone for quantity and there is not enough quantity on this planet. But there is quality. If you choose quality over quantity, we can become finer and finer and there is room for all of us. Eye care

First in Tennessee! Dr. Wang performs 3D LASIK Dr. Ming Wang, MD, PhD, of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center, Nashville, TN, introduced to the state the latest LASIK technology. Dr. Wang is currently the only surgeon in the state who performs 3D LASIK.

“W

e were very excited to be the first to perform the 3D LASIK procedure,” said Dr. Wang, a clinical associate professor of ophthalmology for the University of Tennessee and the director of Wang Vision 3D Cataract & LASIK Center, Nashville, TN. LASIK is a surgical procedure that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Since the advent of LASIK 20 years ago, nearly 30 million LASIK procedures have been performed worldwide. However, despite the popularity of the procedure, the technology itself that has been used for LASIK has remained largely unchanged for many years. The new 3D image-guided high-definition LASIK represents an innovative improvement of LASIK. Dr. Wang explained, “In a standard LASIK procedure, the surgeon looks through a traditional microscope with the naked eye. What you see is what you get. There is no image processing or signal enhancement. Therefore, since the eyeball is very small, there is limited resolution and accuracy in the surgi-

cal procedure. In contrast, with the new 3D LASIK, the surgeon uses the state-of-the-art high-definition microsurgical system. This provides a stereoscopic and digitally signal-enhanced view of the entire surgical field. It allows the surgeon to achieve more precision with the laser focusing on the eye, and thus improves the accuracy of the LASIK procedure and the quality of vision for our patients.” “The driving force of modern 21st century technology is digitalization. This is more accurate and precise than the traditional analog technologies. Using the 3D LASIK digital signal enhancement technology, we digitally overlap preoperative eye maps and match that with the image of eye in real time during surgery. This gives us unprecedented accuracy and precision to treat eye conditions such as astigmatism. Our 3D LASIK patients have been thrilled with their new vision and we have patients from all over the U.S. and world who have come to Nashville for 3D LASIK”, Dr. Wang added.

About Ming Wang, MD, PhD: Dr. Ming Wang, a graduate of Harvard & MIT (MD, magna cum laude), is one of the few cataract and LASIK surgeons in the world today who holds a doctorate degree in laser physics. He has performed over 55,000 procedures, including on over 4,000 doctors. Today, he is a world-class eye surgeon. He is the ONLY surgeon in the state who performs 3D SMILE & 3D LASIK (18+), 3D Implantable Contact Lens (45+), 3D Forever Young Lens (50+), and 3D Laser Cataract Surgery (60+). He has published 9 major textbooks and a paper in the world-renowned journal “Nature”. He holds several U.S. patents and performed the world’s first laser artificial cornea implantation. Dr. Wang founded two 501c(3) non-profit organizations, which have helped patients from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. Dental Health

4 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Mouth and Teeth Injuries Mouth and teeth injuries can happen in a moment and completely change the way your mouth looks and functions. Some accidents, including car collisions, are unavoidable, but you can minimize the risk of other injuries.

3. Schedule a checkup at the start of the season. Keeping teeth healthy plays a major role in injury prevention. Cavities and weakened enamel may increase the risk of accidental and sports-related injuries. Schedule any teeth strengthening treatments, such as surgeries, prior to the season. Talk with your surgeon about protecting your teeth. Always use good dental hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and rinsing, as recommended.

4. Other protective measures. In addition to preparing for sports, individuals should follow basic safety precautions during daily activities. Wear a seatbelt in any vehicle that offers one. Avoid chewing on ice and other hard substances. Accidents may happen under the best circumstances. Knowing where to go in the event of an emergency can improve the likelihood of successful intervention. For knocked or pulled-out teeth, try to schedule an appointment with an oral surgeon within 30 minutes of the incident.

F

or those who play contact sports, pay close attention to teeth and mouth protection measures. One hard tackle or ball to the face can chip a tooth or worse. Here are some protection tips to keep you or your family members’ mouth and teeth safe during any physical activity:

1. Wear a helmet designed for the activity. A helmet can go a long way towards protecting your head, jaw, and mouth from injury during many activities. Encourage all contact sports players to wear helmets during practices and games to prevent accidental injuries. In addition to team sports, individuals should wear helmets while riding a bike, skateboarding, and skating. Some helmets may

provide more protection for the oral-maxillofacial area than others. For example, football helmets and hockey goalie helmets incorporate face cages that provide additional protection.

2. Invest in a mouth guard. Mouth guards protect the teeth, lips, and tongue. Your local oral surgeon may offer customized mouth guard fittings. In addition to a professionally made mouth guard, sports players can purchase a mouth guard kit from most major sporting goods stores. Work with your health care provider to find the solution that will work best for your mouth structure and needs. Mouth guards are particularly important for those with orthodontic appliances, implants, or bridges. 30
