The George Jones Rooftop Bar
Referred to as ‘one of Music City’s best rooftops’, the Rooftop Bar at The George Jones is the perfect spot to hang out while immersing yourself in the Nashville scene! Whether it’s cooling off with a cold one, enjoying a bite to eat from their Smokehouse menu, or dancing along to the country band on stage, The George Jones Rooftop Bar never disappoints. Between views of the Cumberland River and the Downtown skyline, guests are completely surrounded by all things Nashville. This space houses an expansive bar, plenty of room to move around, and unbeatable views. This is a Nashville hidden gem. For more information, visit https://georgejones.com/.

First Watch offers the American classics, such as omelets, pancakes, sandwiches and salads, and unique specialty items like Quinoa Power Bowls, Avocado Toast and the Chickichanga.

This power bowl is packed with quinoa, kale, shredded carrots and house-roasted tomatoes. Then, it’s topped with grilled, all-natural lemon chicken breast, basil pesto sauce, feta crumbles and fresh herbs. The Market Skillet Hash. Wear your comfortable pants for this one, folks. OVME will launch its first minimally invasive cosmetic services studio in Green Hills at the Hill Center in November of 2018. Keeping the spark alive in your relationship
W
hether you have been married for six months, six years, or sixty years it is normal that some of the “spark” in your relationship might be lost over time. Things are always exciting at the very beginning. As time passes, you get more used to one another and you both may stop trying as hard to make things exciting or memorable. Over the years, I’ve concluded that there are habits of happily partnered couples:
1. Accept each others’ changes.
The most successful couples really take note of each other’s changes. Even though there may be similarities they don’t assume their partner is the same person they were 20 years ago. Taking time to know who their partner is at this moment and looking ahead to who they might become secures a truly intimate relationship.
2. Fight fairly. Most couples have disagreements, but successful long term relationships know how to discuss differences without demeaning each other. To build a stronger, more loving relationship then at the end of an argument you should feel stronger and more intimate than you did before you started the argument. Strongest relationships most often have disagreements end with understanding and respect.
3. Find new ways to play.
It’s easy to get into a routine when you have been with someone for a while. Life becomes predictable and routine. According to brain science, new experiences activate our brain’s reward system. This increases feel good chemicals of dopamine and norepinephrine and bring on similar feelings to early romance. Try something new together that you may have been talking about. Whether it is learning a new hobby, starting a new business or helping each live healthier any new enjoyable pursuit can make a couple feel younger and invigorate intimacy.
4. Accept challenges of aging.
In strong relationships partners accept the vulnerability that comes with

LED lights are not all good news LED lights are making us blind and wreaking havoc on our endocrine systems, peer-reviewed studies show… a leading photobiologist recommends switching back to sunlight, candles and incandescent bulbs! One of the world’s top photobiologists has been trying to warn the public for years about the dangers of the government-mandated phasing out of incandescent lighting. While LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are up to 95 percent more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, we are paying for that savings with our health, say experts. A physician and lecturer at Wismar University in Germany, Alexander
aging. Taking care of one another while dealing with physical challenges of aging and feelings of mortality are part of acceptance. By sharing thoughts on what lies ahead there forges a rock solid belief that their partner will be there no matter what happens helps to forge strength in committed relationships.
5. Stay physically and mentally connected.
Couples who still touch, kiss, snuggle and, yes, create an erotic environment over the years keeps romance alive. Granted, things change: Illness, medication and life crises might get in the way of the kind of passionate romance you had years ago. But I have found that the happiest couples are those who have found a way to combat the physical and emotional obstacles and maintain a satisfying and sensual physical relationship.
Wunsch is an international consultant to governments, medical facilities and the lighting industry. His message, though often ignored, is clear: blue light, isolated from all the other colors on the light spectrum, is damaging our retinas and disrupting our endocrine systems, resulting in all sorts of physical and mental illness. It’s not a message the LED industry, governments looking to cut carbon emissions, or consumers saving money on electricity want to hear. But, as a recent Harvard Medical School report says, it is “backed up by study after study.” To find out more: https://returntonow.net 2017/11/15/dark-side-led-lighting/
How to be safe with your Sunscreen The Environmental Working Group’s sunscreen database rates the safety and efficacy of sunscreens and other products with SPF. It’s a great resource to rely on each summer! The EWG recommends using products that provide long lasting, broad spectrum protection, with ingredients that pose fewer health concerns. When deciding on a sunscreen, the EWG encourages to keep the following in mind.
Staying mentally present is also a key component to staying connected. Ditching the distractions of the television, computer or phone is essential. Spending time engaged and talking is a key to emotional intimacy. If you are used to having distractions as a buffer, spending quality quiet time together might be uncomfortable at first, but do not give up and go back to old habits. If you need help with reconnecting, contact Dr. Lisa Webb at Body & Mind Consulting at 615-310-1491 or visit bodymindtn.com.

S
ummertime – That wonderful, warm season that beckons us to spend every possible moment outdoors, including mealtimes. But, often, casual summertime dining experiences are wrought with over-processed and fatsaturated foods. Does munching on cheese puffs and chips while at the beach, slapping hotdogs on the grill for a BBQ, or grabbing a ready-made potato salad from the deli sound like a familiar summertime activity? If so, beware! These summer foods can all be laden with preservatives, food coloring, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils.
Bobbie’s Dairy Dip Bobbie’s Dairy Dip is a nostalgic, circa-1951 ice cream parlor and burger stand with neon accents and outdoor tables. Need we say more? The reviews of this place alone are worth giving it a try! Plus, who doesn’t love a good burger and milkshake combo? Summer is a time of plentitude, but that doesn’t have to lead to unhealthy eating. A delicious way to indulge in summer’s plenitude without overwhelming the body- or your bathing suit- is by enjoying plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are the number one provider of phytonutrients and vitamins. Your body needs vitamins in order to function. Since your body cannot produce vitamins of its own accord, you must obtain them from the foods you eat.
SOAR Adventure Tower The SOAR Adventure Tower was made with your inner-adventurer in mind. The Health & Wellness Magazine’s Guide to
100 Complementary & Alternative T herapies Our comprehensive listing of over 100 therapies continues. Please do bear in mind, inclusion in this list in not an endorsement of a therapy’s effectiveness. Consult an appropriate professional before trying any of them. The final part of the listing will be in our August issue. Holistic Medicine What is it: Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. The practice of holistic medicine integrates conventional and alternative therapies to prevent and treat disease, and most importantly, to promote optimal health. This condition of holistic health is defined as the unlimited and unimpeded free flow of life force energy through body, mind, and spirit. Benefits: Holistic healing aims to identify the root cause, or causes, of an imbalance (whether it is physical pain, stress, poor sleep, etc.). Taking a holistic approach to healing means we will consider
all realms of existence, not just the physical body. To many, this may sound like mind-body medicine, but that is only the foundation of holistic healing. As such, the benefits of holistic healing are conceivably vast. To condense the benefits and analyze them in correspondence to changes in physical, emotional, spiritual, and behavioral health, it becomes evident that there is only one all-encompassing benefit to holistic healing: a dramatically positive change in lifestyle. More information: www.ahha.org
Homeopathy What is it: Homeopathy is a holistic medicine which uses specially prepared, highly diluted substances (given mainly in tablet form) with the aim of triggering the body’s own healing mechanisms. A homeopath will prescribe medicines according to the patient’s specific set of symptoms, and how they experience them, taking into account their overall level of health. Homeopathy is based on the principle of “like treats like”. That is, a substance which can cause symptoms when taken in large doses, and can be used in small amounts to treat similar symptoms. For example, drinking too much coffee can cause sleeplessness and agitation, so according to this 10
principle, when made into a homeopathic medicine, it could be used to treat people suffering from sleeplessness and agitation. An important difference with homeopathy however, is that the medicinal doses (known as remedies) are so small that toxic side-effects are avoided. Benefits: • It can be used by pregnant and nursing women. • It can be used by children and infants. • It does not interfere with medications taken by a person. • It can be used for chronic or acute conditions. • Homeopathy is a holistic approach to healing: one that involves the body, mind, emotions, and spirit of the person being treated. • Homeopathic remedies are readily available and can, therefore, be used by anyone. • Homeopathic remedies are typically inexpensive and therefore provide an affordable approach to healing. • Homeopathic medicine is non-invasive. For more information: www.homeopathy.org
Alternative Therapies: A-Z guide
Hypnotherapy
Benefits: • Purging of heavy metals • A more balanced pH level • Boosts the immune system • Improves mood • Detoxifying the liver • Internal cleansing with full-body purge • Liver, kidney, and parasite cleansing • Encourages normal blood sugar More information: https://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-healt
Kinesiology What it is: Hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy in which the patient is firstly put into a state of hypnosis, then on a subconscious level, encouraged by the hypnotherapy practitioner to alter their subconscious and create new thoughts, feelings and patterns of behavior. Benefits: • Aids relaxation • Helps with acute or chronic pain management • Helps manage or eliminate addictions (including drugs and alcohol) • Can help treat eating disorders More information: https://umm.edu/health/ medical/altmed/treatment/hypnotherapy
Ionic Foot bath What it is: An ionic foot detox pulls the toxins out of your body through your feet. The process gives the hydrogen in the water a positive charge. The positive charge is said to attract the negatively charged toxins in your body. The ions in the foot bath water supposedly hold a charge that enables them to bind to any heavy metals and toxins in your body, similar to how a magnet works. This allows the toxins to be pulled out through the bottoms of your feet.
What is it? Kinesiology is the study of the mechanics of body movements. It uses gentle muscle-monitoring techniques to access the subconscious mind and gain accurate information about your current issues and what is needed to help your body, mind and spirit to restore balance. Quite simply, kinesiology helps restore balance to the body. Benefits • Supports muscles • Reduces swelling • Helps with decision making • Pin-points and eliminates allergic reactions • Eliminates emotional, physical and mental stress • Enhances learning Boosts sports performance For more information: http://www.kinesiology.net/kinesiology.asp

She is an active member of the People Health Squad, advising on health and fitness to People magazine’s millions of readers. Here she talks to Health & Wellness Magazine.
Erin Oprea: “The World is your Gym”
20
H&W: Your ‘10 Rules” To Live By If You Want To Get Healthier’ is full of great ideas. You and many other fitness and health experts offer lots of sensible advice on healthy living, so why are so many people still overweight and unfit? E.O: We live in a world where instant gratification is the norm and it’s easy to have. Hungry? Drive-thru. Bored? Turn on the TV or check your phone. We have so many easy options! Eating clean to get lean and working out to get fit are not easy options in the short term and most people don’t think about their long-term health. What are the main reasons people fail to maintain their diet or fitness regime? There are lots of reasons – lack of discipline, not wanting it badly enough, too busy, too many excuses. And I’m not saying that people don’t want to be healthy or fit. They just don’t want it badly enough to commit to it. I often hear people say that they can’t work out because their knees or whatever are bad. Your knees may be bad, but what about the rest of your body? There are plenty of exercises you can still do to get and stay fit. Plus, there are great supplements like Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides that have amazing effects on your joints. I take it every day and my knees don’t bother me anymore.
Interview
What can they do to combat this? How can this attitude be changed? You have to really make the decision that you want it and figure out why it’s important to you. Do you want better health to keep up with your kids? Do you want better health to avoid a health condition that runs in your family? Do you want to look good in a swimsuit or your wedding dress? Figure that out, and then commit to it. Take time to plan your workouts and your meals. You’ve heard it before - fail to plan, plan to fail. Plan to succeed, then hold yourself accountable. Work with a trainer, workout with a friend, join a support group or use any of a lot of apps available to help you. I’m currently hosting a game on StepBet and will start another one soon. That’s a great way to hold yourself accountable. If you need help planning your meals, my Menud app has a meal planning section that even makes your grocery list for you. You don’t have to go it alone. There are lots of tools available; find one that works for you!
made the commitment to themselves, and to their current and future health. They know that the only thing to do is to, well, do it. As I said before, having an accountability partner helps and, in addition to coming up with challenging workouts for them, I hold them accountable.
In a World that wants ‘instant gratification’ doesn’t this make the whole concept of ‘long term’ healthy living plans a difficult ‘sell’? Unfortunately, it does. People tell me all the time that eating healthy and working out is expensive. But, so are chronic illnesses. And people expect to get into shape overnight. You didn’t put weight on overnight and it’s not going to come off overnight, either. You have to be patient, keep eating clean and working out. The results will come.
Give our readers and idea of your ‘typical day’. I am up and ready to rock at 3:30 every morning with my belly growling ready for my crockpot oatmeal, egg whites and berries. I eat that while I’m drinking just a little bit of coffee and watching the news. I drink one of my beet shots and pack my lunch bag so that I have plenty of healthy options available during the day. Then I take five minutes to get myself ready before I head out the door to meet my first client of the day. I work with my clients in their homes usually about 10 people throughout the day, and when I’m driving in between, I eat, hold meetings and give interviews on the phone. If I have any extra time throughout the day, I stop and do Tabatas nearby. I usually get home at around 5 or 6 o’clock, but my day doesn’t stop there. On Mondays, I host virtual training sessions that include a workout and Q & A session. When that’s done, I get in my own workout, then I eat a clean dinner with food that we prepped on Sunday. Other nights, I have meetings or soccer games. During all of this, I squeeze in time to work on my book. I usually go to sleep at 10 or 11, then hit it all over again!
Personal Trainers are not within most people’s budget, what’s the next best way to keep fit? My philosophy is that the world can be your gym. You don’t have to have a ton of expensive equipment! You can walk your 10,000 daily steps for the cost of a good pair of shoes. For me, my jump rope is my favorite piece of equipment. You can find great jump ropes and not spend the world for them. Remember, you can’t out exercise a bad diet; so, eating clean and giving your body the fuel that it needs is super important.
Do you have a new book planned, tours with other well known Fitness Experts..what are your future plans? Actually, I am in the process of writing a followup to my book, The 4X4 Diet, and it’s going to be A-MAZING! I can’t wait! I also plan to keep on kicking butt in my one-on-one training sessions because I really love doing that. And I have some group workouts coming up, starting with a series in Chicago in June.
Are your ‘celebrity clients’ all super motivated, or are they like the rest of us somedays... ’not in the mood’?!!! How do you change their minds?!! All of my clients are human, so, sure, some days they are just not feeling it. However, they’ve
Baseball, Ice Hockey, Football, Basketball, Soccer??.. which is your favorite sport to watchand why? Definitely soccer! I grew up playing it and have played it my whole life. Plus, both of my sons play it and I love going to their games. 21
The ‘Alternative Interview’: 1. If you could eat only one food for your next meal, what would it be? Eggs or Oatmeal. 2. What is the last book you read? Fifty Shades of Grey. 3. What would be your perfect career outside of Fitness Training? Being a full-time Marine or an event planner. 4. Favorite musician or group? Nelly. 5. Favorite movie of all time? G.I. Jane. 6. If they made a film of your life which actress would you want to play your part? Demi Moore. 7. What is the one thing that can always brighten your day? A good workout or flowers. 8. Favorite Quote? “The whole world is your gym”. 9. Favorite Nashville restaurant? St. Anejo is my favorite, but I can use my Menud app to help make good choices at thousands of restaurants across the country. 10. Who/what inspires you most and why? Oh, that’s easy – my kids, does that sound corny? Whatever, they do. They remind me to keep doing what I love and they always make me feel better when I’m down in the dumps.

Today tea is enjoyed by many as a caffeine alternative but also for the many herbal blends that have a long list of health benefits. Veronica Williams (pictured), reviews some of Nashville’s Tea Shops.
S
pecialty teas are becoming common in coffee shops and grocery stores and Nashville is not missing out on any of the action. There are several spots to check out and get your next cup of tea.
High Garden
Tea I Tried: Wildflower Jasmine Iced Green Tea Location: East Nashville This whimsical tea shop boasts hundreds of tea, herbs, spices, and everything for your tea and herbal needs. The shop has a tea bar and several tables in the back for you to enjoy your hot or cold cup of wonder. On this particularly hot summer day after encouragement from everyone behind the tea bar I opted for the Wildflower Jasmine Iced Green Tea
with no sweetener. The floral notes were so sweet, anything extra would have been overpowering. Each weekend they offer several employee-crafted beverages that will send your taste buds to bliss. Their walls are filled with teas and herbs and their staff can direct you beyond your cup of tea to finding a tea that suits your particular health needs. Teas to help with detoxing, sleep, cramping, exhaustion, and so much more; there are teas for everything. They also can help you find herbs specific to your health needs to blend your own teas. Personally, their “Dreams” blend is one of my favorites and send me straight to dreamland every night. High Garden is constantly creating new blends and keeping their classics stocked. 22

Children’s Mental Health
LENS Therapy, a 95% success rate with ADHD, Anxiety and Depression In the two years that Harmonized Brain Center has been open in Nashville offering LENS Neurofeedback, Sheri Rowney (pictured) has found the therapy particularly effective at helping with ADHD. Here she explains how it works.
W
ith the latest figures showing that 14% of children ages 4 to 17 nationwide and over 16% here in Tennessee are diagnosed with ADD and/or ADHD, parents are scrambling for information and resources to help their child. Many struggle with having to medicate their children with stimulants which helps the ADD/ ADHD symptoms but can cause other more harmful and long lasting side effects. There is a safe, quick and easy alternative. LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System) can be as effective as medication without the harmful side effects. ADD/ADHD is generally associated with the inability to focus at school; not being able to sit still and to pay attention. Often these children are reprimanded for their behavior; not being able to sit in their seats, fidgeting when they are supposed to be still; causing disruptions at inappropriate times. These children tend to struggle with their grades because they are unable to focus on what the teacher is saying and are often labeled with a
learning disability when in fact they are often times quite bright; they just can’t focus in the traditional setting. Kids with ADD/ADHD are often ostracized from their peers as they are labeled the “bad kids.” They can be loud and disorganized; they often interrupt when others are talking. Sometimes they seem to not care that they are so disruptive. They may not be invited to parties and play dates because of their behavior. No matter how hard they try; they just can’t seem to be able to do what is expected of them. Not only does this affect their educational needs but it also affects their self-confidence; they often feel like they don’t measure up and will never be as successful as the other kids. This lack of confidence causes long term effects as their selfimage diminishes, they often quit trying and just resign themselves to thinking they’ll never be able to measure up so it’s not worth the effort. For the last 35 years, there has been a new non-medicated, non-invasive option for not only 26
treating the symptoms of ADD/ADHD, but also in changing the brain so that the client can focus better, interact better and make better choices. Called Low Energy Neurofeedback, it has been in continual development since 1990. With a success rate of over 90%, it uses a small radio frequency to disrupt the brain waves and allows them to reset back into a more effective, natural pattern. Over a period of just a few sessions, clients start to feel more focused, calmer and more able to make better decisions. Sessions only take a few minutes a week and results are long lasting. This amazingly successful therapy is available at Harmonized Brain Centers. Here we combine LENS with Life Coaching, introducing skills and habit changes to go along with the more efficient brain activity. This integrative approach sets your child up for success in a natural and effective way. LENS is not only used for treating ADD/ADHD but also for people suffering with migraines, TBI, anxiety, depression, brain fog, chemo fog and memory issues. The brain is an amazing organ with the ability to change to become more efficient and effective with just a little help. Here is a testimony of a very happy family of a child with ADHD who came to see us at Harmonized Brain Centers: I brought my 14 year old grandson to Harmonized Brain Centers after trying three different medications for his ADD. They all caused side effects and changed his personality so that not only were we dealing with his lack of attention and focus but were also seeing anger issues, weight loss and he couldn’t fall asleep at night. He was able to stay focused better at school but was still unmotivated and we weren’t seeing many good changes. We were desperate for another alternative and after spending lots of time and research, we decided to call HBC. Our experience there was nothing short of a miracle. After just two sessions we noticed he was calmer and nicer at home. We were anxious to see how his grades would be and were thrilled when the second grading period ended with an A, 4 B’s and 2C’s! His confidence was back, his attitude changed and the whole family dynamics changed with him. We couldn’t be more thrilled or satisfied with Harmonized Brain Centers. I would recommend Harmonized Brain Centers to anyone looking for help with ADD. We are so glad we found them”. For more information, please call Harmonized Brain Centers of Tennessee at (615) 331-8762. We would be happy to schedule a consultation to discuss an option that you might not have known even existed. Our goal is for your child to be the best they can be; we would love to help!

Old Age Can Be a Great Blessing How can you cultivate the right attitude and embrace old age? Below, Sadhguru, yogi, mystic and the foremost authority on yoga, provides guidance on doing so.
G
etting old is something that most of us will experience; however, there are many who may struggle with the aging process and see it as a negative life experience. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, although Americans have on average added 30-plus years to their life span, the prevalence of negative perceptions about old age can have a deep negative impact on the physical and emotional health of that segment of the population. On the other hand, according to a study at Yale University, older people who accept and embrace positive stereotypes about old age are more likely to enjoy better health.
It appears that how we feel about old age has a profound effect on our experience of it. “Old age need not be misery. In many ways, old age can be a great blessing because the whole experience of life is behind you. When you were a child everything was beautiful, but you were eager to grow up because you want to experience life. When you became youthful, your intelligence got hijacked by your hormones. Whatever you did, knowingly or unknowingly, it just pushed you in that direction. Very few people are capable of raising their intelligence beyond the hormonal hijack and looking at life with clarity. All others are trapped in it. 27
When you come to old age, all the longings are over, a whole experience of life is behind you and you are once again childlike, but you have the wisdom of experience of life. It can be a very fruitful and wonderful part of your life, but unfortunately most human beings suffer their old age simply because they don’t take care of their rejuvenation process properly. In ancient times in India, old age meant Vanaprastha ashrama [spiritual hermitage], where the old couple went back into the forest and lived there joyfully. But today, old age means “hospital ashrama.” If you take care of your rejuvenation process well, old age can be a miraculous part of your life, because it is invaluable to have a whole life’s experience behind you and to be once again childlike. Everything is over, but very few old people can even smile, unfortunately. This is because the only thing that they knew in their life was the physical body. Once the body begins to recede, they become despondent. It might not have become diseased, no big cancer need to have come, but in every step that you take, age is telling you this not forever. If you establish yourself in other [spiritual] dimensions of experience, the body becomes an easy thing to handle. Old age and even death can be a joyful experience.” To learn more about Inner Engineering Program designed by Sadhguru and its benefits please visit www.innerengineering.com

Take Back Your Smile with Dental Implants While dental implants date back to around 600 A.D., modern implants have been around only since the 1970s. Unlike ancient times, when people made dental implants from jade, stones, and even seashells, modern implants are nearly indiscernible from real teeth. Dental implants replace missing teeth and stabilize the jawbone. Jamie A Romero (pictured) of Solace Oral Surgery, explains more. After that time, your surgeon will attach a post to the implant, which will eventually serve at the frame for your replacement tooth. You will then need to let your gums heal for a few months before proceeding to the final step. Once your gums have healed, your oral surgeon will attach your new replacement tooth to the post and you will have your own beautiful smile back.
Are Dental Implants Right for Me? While implants are very strong and damage resistant, they are not indestructible. It’s not uncommon for implants to fail because the patient doesn’t take good care of his or her teeth. People who smoke or grind their teeth run the risk of damaging their implants. Some preexisting health conditions, including diabetes and osteoporosis, can increase the risk for implant failure. Your oral surgeon will tell you if implants are right for you. Want to learn more about dental implants? Contact Solace Oral Surgery at 615-320-1392.
How Dental Implants Have Evolved When dental implants first became popular, they were for people who had lost most of their teeth. When you lose teeth, the structural integrity of the jaw begins to deteriorate. People who wear dentures often have trouble getting them to stay in place if they’ve lost strength in their jaw. The implants are fused to the jawbone surgically, acting like an “anchor” for replacement teeth. In the 1970s, oral surgeons used these anchors to stabilize the jaw to accept dentures. But now, implants can negate the need for dentures altogether. Oral surgeons fuse the implants to the
jawbone and attach the replacement teeth to the anchors. The teeth are strong and secure, and there is no need to take them out at night for cleaning. Implants can replace one tooth or all of them!
The Dental Implant Process Dental implants are done in three steps, which require three separate visits to your oral surgeon. The whole process takes six months to a year. The first step is to place the implant into your jawbone with surgery. The implant acts like a natural root of your tooth, and needs to be covered for three to six months to fuse to the jawbone. 29
Physical Exercise
“Healthy Sitting” Tips Can Reduce Neck and Back Pain The most common misunderstanding about what I do, is that I only fix existing problems. An important role as a neurosurgeon is educating patients on non-operative options to manage pain and prevent further injury. Chris Taleghani (pictured) of Pinnacle Surgery offers some preventative advice on back pain.
M
any of us will be spending more time at our desk, likely in front of a computer, during the next couple of months working to close out our business year and maybe even doing some holiday shopping. Prolonged sitting causes slouching and back strain and can lead to chronic back and neck pain, decreased circulation, and even put you at higher risk for heart disease and obesity. We’ve all heard of the “20-20-20 Rule” for reducing eye strain with prolonged computer use: every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. I suggest a similar rule for better back health—the “60-60 Rule.” After 60 minutes of static posture, get up and stretch and/ or walk around for at least 60 seconds. Getting up and stretching or walking can really help refresh our minds and our bodies. But what about while we’re sitting? There are definitely things we can all do to help thwart neck and back pain. Proper chair height and back support are huge factors in “healthy sitting.”
Setting up for success: Elbow Height Test: While seated, scoot your chair all the way forward until your chest is almost touching your desk. Bend your elbows, and place your forearms on the desk, with your palms face down, and your upper arms touching your sides. Your forearm and upper arm should form a 90° angle. If they don’t, move your chair up or down to adjust. Finger Height Test: While sitting all the way back in your chair, slide the fingers of your right and left hands under your right and left legs (respectively) just behind your knees. If there is more than a finger width of room under your knees, raise your chair
height. If your fingers do not slide under your thighs easily, lower your chair or use your chair’s footrest (if it has one). Back Support Test: Sit all the way back in the chair and arch your back slightly. Make sure your shoulder blades are touching the back of the chair. If you can slide your hands easily behind your lower back, you do not have enough back support. To add back support, try a lumbar pillow, or even a rolled up sweater or towel. Neck Height Test: After adjusting your chair height using the aforementioned methods, it’s time to test your computer. (You heard me right!) This step is too often forgotten and can make a huge difference in the way we feel at our desks. Sit comfortably in 30
your chair, look straight ahead, and close your eyes. Slowly open your eyes—you should be looking at the center of your computer screen. If you are not, adjust your computer accordingly. As computers get more compact, they get further from a comfortable gazing spot. Most laptop computers need to be raised with a stand (or even a sturdy cardboard box) to get within a comfortable viewing range. A lot of a computer user’s slouching is caused by their attempt to lower their body to the computer screen’s level rather than raising their computer screen.
The finishing stretch: There are also some simple stretches that can make long days at the office less painful (literally). One of the best stretches for “slouchers” or “sitters” is the reverse arch stretch. Imagine a position that is the exact opposite of slouching—this is it. While sitting, scoot to the front edge of your chair (not too close!) and clasp your hands behind your back (or hold each armrest if you have them). With your feet planted on the floor, lean back slightly, and open up your chest by squeezing your shoulder blades toward each other and pushing your clasped hands up and back. Hold this stretch for a few seconds and take a few deep breaths. You can also perform this stretch while standing (or even while doing that 60 second lap around your office that I know you’re about to do!). If you feel any pain or discomfort, stop doing this stretch immediately. Remember not to over do it. It’s not about how high you can get your hands, or how far back you can lean, it’s about finding some relief; do what is comfortable for you. Now, get up and stretch! Chris Taleghani, M.D., M.B.A. Dr. Taleghani is a board certified neurosurgeon who specializes in minimally invasive surgery and complex spine and brain conditions. He received his Medical Degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his Neurosurgery Residency training at Pennsylvania State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
