report from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in Phuket stated that this year’s Chinese New Year Festival has shown to bring more bustle and enthusiasm then before due to Chinese tourism coming back once again with Phuket as a priority destination for most Chinese New Year’s travelers. The TAT stated that a key reason causing Chinese tourists to come back and visit Thailand is likely the free on-arrival visas suitable for those wishing to visit for less than 30 days. This visa has been made free up to April 30th this year. “Providing free 30 day onarrival visas has shown much success since day one and therefore the P.M decided to extend visa availability past Chinese New Year as well.” The Association of Southern Hotels which has hotels in Phuket Town and various local beaches, shared that the accommodation rates increase during this time by 80-90%. This proves that this measure is successful and able to really bring more tourists in, particularly the Chinese who recently aren’t so happy with Thailand since the tour boat sinking incident last year. H o w e v e r, P h u k e t Ti m e s believes that this “free visa” shouldn’t be implemented on a regular basis. It is a measure that can be profitable at times, but it is still necessary to charge for visas to improve the states income. Nonetheless, charged visas is what you will see in most any country around the world, there should be a price to step foot in another’s country. Let’s not forget that tourism consists of selling the beauty of natural resources and local culture, two things that must be carefully conserved in order to be a blessing to our future generations. That is making a truly sustainable industry.

A GOOD FUTURE STARTS IN THE PRESENT

Prab's Thoughts The article shared also raises the question about the interesting future of Phuket Island. That is if Phuket wants to “make Phuket a world class tour destination” then it must create a clear vision for the future.

n the middle of last January, Mr. Mingsan Kaosaad, the Director of Public Policy Education Institute at Chiang Mai University published the article “Phuket: A Town stuck in Tourism Mediocrity” http://www.bangkokbiznews. com/blog/detail/646375 I find this article to portray a very interesting perspective and that is why I have shared it on Facebook. However, when I posted, I hadn’t yet had the time to think and analyze the article very much. Today, however, I have the time and would like to share just a few things concerning the article. For those who haven’t yet read the article, especially those who wish to be a “leader” in both national and local politics, attached is the article’s link, a good source of knowledge on how to move our city forward. The article titled “Phuket: A Town stuck in Tourism Mediocrity!” points out that the status of Phuket Town is currently only mediocre at best. This means that it attracts mostly middle-class tourists and that profits made from such tourists when compared to the profits made by the worlds top tourism destinations is really only mediocre. Also, the infrastructure and technology used, though professed to be “Smart City” standard, is actually only average level technology. For me, I agree with the above statement!! But the question in my mind is, well what then? What caused Phuket to be stuck in this condition? Its been almost 30 years that the Phuket people have pled for the Patong-Katu tunnel project which is to solve traffic and accident issues. Today that project continues to be nothing more that pieces of paper while accidents and traffic continue to scar the image of Phuket as a tour destination. Waste water treatment systems are a very important part of protecting and keeping our sea beautiful and the Phuket people

have been trying to make plans to fix these issues for over 20 years now and today the waste water systems have barely managed to budge forward. Patong Beach has perhaps made the most progress with a waste water treatment rate of 55% while Phuket Island as a whole averages out to about 35%. It is quite frightening really how much time has been wasted.

“Everyone knows that Phuket is like a swan that lays golden eggs. But today our swan is sick with a chronic illness because it has been kept restrained and malnourished. It hasn’t been unable to fend and flourish naturally but rather has been expected to lay big golden eggs every day.” This is a quote from Mr. Pian Keesin the former Mayor of Patong Municipality who is also my father. He shared this statement during a Phuket Strategic Planning conference led by a P.M back then in 2004 and who is currently across the border fleeing. The reason I brought this quote up is to say that the Phuket people have planned and put in all the effort they can to help this island advance further. Only what is left is for the government to help things get going and manage the country. When will the government get serious, be honest and really focus on the development of Phuket? The article shared also raises the question about the interesting future of Phuket Island. That is if Phuket wants to “make Phuket a world class tour destination” then

it must create a clear vision for the future. Phuket people want to see their home town move forward in what direction? Here are 3 directions Phuket could go in the future. Direction 1: There could be a rapid growth in number of tourists visiting due to competitive tour prices. This will depend mostly on Chinese and Indian tours as well as group tours. Every beach will become very crowded like Patong Beach is today. Even if the monorail is completed, the number of vehicles on the road will still continue to increase worsening traffic even more. Infrastructural services will be insufficient, public water will be more scarce and expensive. Also, foreign labor accommodation will be even more cramped then now. Direction 2: Phuket might become like the “Miami of the East” with many high rise condos by the sea and a modern central market to visit by car or monorail. Public transportation will be digitally operated through convenient phone

apps. There will be large public parks built by government funding as well as tunnel dug through the mountains that separate the east and west sides of Phuket. This will greatly decrease time of travel as monorails still take a significant amount of time.

อ่านกันดู โดยเฉพาะคนที่อยากเป็ น “ผู้น�ำ” เป็ นนักการเมืองทังระดั ้ บชาติ และระดับท้ อง ถิ่น ซึง่ ต้ องสัง่ สมองค์ความรู้ ตา่ งๆ ในการน�ำ มาพัฒนาบ้ านเมืองให้ ก้าวหน้ า สามารถเข้ าไป อ่านได้ ตามลิงค์ที่ผมแนบมาให้ แล้ ว บทความ “ภูเก็ต: ฤาจะติดกับดักเมือง ท่องเที่ ยวระดับปานกลาง!” ได้ ชีใ้ ห้ เห็นว่า สถานภาพของเมืองภูเก็ตในปั จจุบนั นันเรี ้ ยก ได้ วา่ ติดกับดักเมืองท่องเที่ยวระดับปานกลาง คือ มีนกั ท่องเที่ยวคุณภาพปานกลาง รายได้ ต่อนักท่องเที่ยวเทียบกับเมืองท่องเที่ยวเอก ของโลกก็อยูใ่ นระดับปานกลาง ส่วนโครงสร้ าง พื ้นฐานหรื อเทคโนโลยีที่ใช้ อยูแ่ ม้ วา่ จะอ้ างว่า อยากจะเป็ น “Smart City” แต่กเ็ ป็ นเทคโนโลยี ระดับปานกลางเช่นกัน ส�ำหรับผมเห็นด้ วยกับข้ อสรุปดังกล่าว!! แต่ก็มีค�ำถามอยู่ในใจว่า แล้ วอะไรละ??? ที่ ท�ำให้ ภเู ก็ตต้ องอยูใ่ นสภาวะเช่นที่วา่ มา??? เกือบ 30 มาแล้ วทีค่ นภูเก็ตเรียกร้ องให้ ขดุ อุโมงค์ป่าตอง-กะทู้ เพื่อแก้ ปัญหาจราจรและ อุบตั ิเหตุ วันนีย้ งั คงเป็ นแค่โปรเจคกระดาษ ขณะที่อบุ ตั เิ หตุสร้ างความเสียหายต่อภาพ ลักษณ์การท่องเทีย่ วเกิดขึ ้นซ� ้ำแล้ วซ� ้ำอีก ขณะ ที่ระบบบ�ำบัดน� ้ำเสียซึง่ ถือว่าเครื่ องมือส�ำคัญ ส�ำหรับในการปกป้องปั ญหาน� ้ำทะเลเน่าเสีย ของเมืองท่องเทีย่ วทางทะเล คนภูเก็ตตระหนัก

The selling point is the sea, beach, sun, cultural art and quality cuisine. It would a town known to be perfect for a good trip, good walk, good bike ride and all

ในความส�ำคัญและก�ำหนดแผนงานในการแก้ ปั ญหาทังระบบมาตั ้ งแต่ ้ ปี 2540 แต่วนั นี ้ระบบ บ�ำบัดน�ำ้ เสียเกิ ดขึน้ ได้ เพียงหย่อมๆ โดยหาด ป่ าตองซึง่ ถือว่าก้ าวหน้ าที่สดุ ในเรื่ องนี ้ สามารถ บ�ำบัดน� ้ำเสียได้ เพียงร้ อยละ 55 ขณะที่ภาพรวม ทังเกาะภู ้ เก็ตอยูท่ ี่ร้อยละ 35 เท่านัน้ เป็ นการใช้ เวลาอย่างสิ ้นเปลืองจนน่าใจ หายจริ งๆ!! “ใครๆ ก็ร้ ูวา่ ภูเก็ตคือห่านทีอ่ อกไข่เป็ นทองค�ำ แต่วนั นี ้ห่านตัวนี ้ก�ำลังอ่อนแอจากอาการป่ วย เรื อ้ รัง เพราะถูกเลี ้ยงแบบขังคอกจ�ำกัดอาหาร แถมยังไม่ยอมปล่อยให้ ออกไปหากินเองตาม ธรรมชาติอีกต่างหาก แต่กลับถูกตังความหวั ้ ง ให้ ออกไข่ทองค�ำฟองโตๆ ทุกวัน” คือค�ำพูดของ นายเปี่ ยน กี่สิ ้น อดีตนายกเทศมนตรีเมืองป่ าตอง คุณพ่อของผมเอง ที่กล่าวไว้ ในที่ประชุมชีแ้ จง ยุทธศาสตร์ จงั หวัดภูเก็ต ที่มีนายกรัฐมนตรี คนที่ ลี ้ภัยอยูต่ า่ งแดนในขณะนี นั้ ง่ หัวโต๊ ะเป็ นประธาน การชุม ตังแต่ ้ ปี 2547โน่น!!” ที่หยิบยกเอามาอ้ างอิงก็เพื่อจะบอกให้ ร้ ูวา่ คนภูเก็ตนันได้ ้ คดิ และได้ ลงมือท�ำทุกอย่างเท่าที่ กระท�ำได้ ในการพัฒนาเกาะแห่งนี ้แล้ ว ก็เหลือ แต่รัฐบาลที่หมุนเวียนกันเข้ าบริ หารประเทศนัน่ แหละ จะมุง่ มัน่ จริงใจ จริงจัง กับการพัฒนาเกาะ ภูเก็ตแห่งนี ้แค่ไหน??? บทความดังกล่าว ยังได้ ตงค� ั ้ ำถามต่อทิศทาง ในอนาคตของเกาะภูเก็ตไว้ อย่างน่าสนใจว่า หาก ภูเก็ตต้ องการ “ยกระดับเมืองภูเก็ตให้ ขึน้ เป็ น เมืองท่องเที่ยวระดับนานาชาติ” ก็ต้องสร้ างภาพ อนาคตที่ชดั เจนว่า คนภูเก็ตอยากจะเห็นเมือง ของตัวเองนันก้ ้ าวไปในทิศทางไหน โดยน�ำเสนอ 3 ฉากทัศน์ของทิศทางในอนาคต ฉากทัศน์ที่ 1 เป็ นภาพของการขยายตัวของ จ�ำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวที่เกิดขึ ้นอย่างรวดเร็ ว โดย อาศัยการแข่งขันด้ านราคา ซึง่ ต้ องพึง่ พานักท่อง เที่ยวชาวจีน อินเดียและกรุ๊ ปทัวร์ เป็ นหลัก ทุก หาดมีความหนาแน่นเหมือนป่ าตอง แม้ จะมีการ สร้ างรถไฟรางเบาก็จริ ง แต่จ�ำนวนรถยนต์ รถตู้ รถจักรยานยนต์ก็ยงั เพิ่มอย่างมหาศาล จราจร ที่ยงั คับคัง่ หนาแน่น บริ การพื ้นฐานสร้ างเท่าไหร่ ก็ไม่พอ น� ้ำประปาขาดแคลนต้ องแย่งกันซื ้อ เกิด ชุมชนแรงงานข้ ามถิน่ ข้ ามชาติ อยูก่ นั อย่างแออัด ยัดเยียดในบางพื ้นที่ ฉากทัศน์ที่ 2 ภูเก็ตอาจจะเป็ นไมอามี่แห่ง ตะวันออก ที่มีอาคารสูงริ มทะเลอยูท่ กุ ที่ มีศนู ย์ ประชุมทันสมัย เน้ นการเดินทางด้ วยรถยนต์และ รถรางเบา มีการใช้ แอพพลิเคชัน่ ในการเดินทาง เพือ่ ความสะดวก มีการสร้ างสวนสนุกขนาดใหญ่ ภายใต้ ฉากทัศน์นี ้รัฐจ�ำเป็ นจะต้ องมีการลงทุน เจาะภูเขาน�ำรถจากฝั่งตะวันออกไปสูฝ่ ั่งตะวันตก เพื่อที่จะลดเวลาการเดินทาง เพราะรถไฟรางเบา ยังใช้ เวลาเดินทางสูงไป

ฉากทัศน์ที่ 3 ภูเก็ตอาจจะเป็ นริ เวียร่าแห่ง อันดามัน มีกิจกรรมท่องเที่ยวเชิงสร้ างสรรค์ คนหนุม่ สาวในท้ องถิ่นสามารถกลับมาสร้ าง ธุรกิจสตาร์ ทอัพ จุดขายคือทะเล ชายหาด และ แสงแดด มีศลิ ปวัฒนธรรม อาหารชันดี ้ เรี ยกว่า เป็ นเมืองน่าเที่ยว น่าเดิน น่าปั่ นจักรยาน และ น่าอยูส่ �ำหรับคนภูเก็ตอีกด้ วย จิ นตนาการทัง้ 3 รู ปแบบ ล้ วนมี ความ เป็ นไปได้ ที่จะเกิดขึ ้นกับเกาะภูเก็ตในอนาคต ข้ างหน้ า แต่อนาคตจริ งๆ จะเป็ นแบบไหน? อย่างไร? มันขึ ้นอยู่กบั ว่าเราก�ำลังท�ำอะไรกัน อยูใ่ นปั จจุบนั !!... อ่านแล้ วลองคิดกันดูครับ

he name “Chart Chindapol” certainly doesn’t fall short in the political circles of the Andaman and even throughout the Southern Region as he has made himself a valuable asset and interest to many political parties. He gained much experience as the Thai Trade Representative Advisor and ViceSecretary of the Islamic Committee of Thailand. Also, during the “Pichet Sathirotchawan” term he worked with well-known politicians, businessmen and religious leaders from Phetchaburi combining efforts that built strong business and political networks while producing more religious activities. As for business, he proved himself an expert in the Southeast Asia marketing through widespread domestic and international networks that made him well-known among most media as “Mr. Connections”. Jui Tui Shrine or Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng, Phuket

hy this shrine you might ask? Because Jui Tui Shrine has been in Phuket for over 100 years now located on Phutorn Lane, Ranong Rd in Phuket Town. The meaning of Jui Tui Shrine comes from Jui which means water and Tui which means rice harvester. Back then, there was large canal in front of the shrine where the locals built a water turbine for harvesting their rice.

his temple is also known as Leng Nui Yi Temple and is considered the “head of the dragon” temple for many Chinese people. At the entrance sits the 4 keepers of the world which the Chinese know as “Shi Tai Tiang Uang”. Also, there is placement of Buddha, Bodhisattva and many other holy monk relics. Many people come her to pay respects and earn Pichong merit.

2.วัดมังกรกมลาวาส จังหวัดกรุ งเทพมหานคร Mangkorn Komlawat Temple in Bangkok วัดมังกรกมลาวาส หรื อวัดเล่งเน่ยยี ถือเป็ นวัดส่วนหัวมังกรตามความเชื่อของชาวจีน บริ เวณทางเข้ าจะพบวิหาร ท้ าวโลกบาลทัง้ 4 มีเทวรูปเทพเจ้ า 4 องค์ ชาวจีนเรี ยกว่า “ซี ้ไต๋เทียงอ้ วง” หมายถึงเทพเจ้ าที่ปกปั กษ์ รักษา คุ้มครอง นอกจากนี ้ยังเป็ นที่ประดิษฐานของ พระพุทธเจ้ า พระโพธิสตั ว์ และองค์ทวยเทพอีกหลายองค์ ผู้คนนิยมมากราบไหว้ เพื่อความเป็ นสิริมงคล รวมถึงท�ำบุญปี ชงด้ วย

Pho Thepparak Shrine – Jao Mae Thap Thim in Nakorn Sawan his shrine is commonly known as Pueng Thao Kong Shrine located on the Route between Nakorn Swan and Chum Saeng on the East side of the Jao Praya River where there is the two colored river and the 4 way river split known as Pak Nam Pho. This is also a viewpoint of the Jao Praya River and has been a place of ancestry worship and unity for the locals for over 100 years. There is also many holy monk relics such as Jao Pho Kuan Uh, Jao Mae Thap Thim, Jao Mae Sawan, and Jao Pho Sam Ta (Military and Theater spirits).

3.ศาลเจ้ าพ่ อเทพารั กษ์ - เจ้ าแม่ ทบั ทิม จ.นครสวรรค์ Pho Thepparak Shrine – Jao Mae Thap Thim in Nakorn Sawan ศาลเจ้ าพ่อเทพารักษ์ -เจ้ าแม่ทบั ทิม เรี ยกกันทัว่ ไปว่า ศาลเจ้ าปึ งเถ่ากง ตังอยู ้ บ่ น ถนนสายนครสวรรค์ - ชุมแสง ริ มฝั่งขวา (ฝั่งตะวันออก) ของแม่น� ้ำเจ้ าพระยาตรง บริ เวณที่มีแม่น� ้ำสองสี สี่สายมารวมกันเรี ยกว่า ปากน� ้ำโผล่ หรื อปากน� ้ำโพ ซึง่ เป็ น จุดชมต้ นแม่น� ้ำเจ้ าพระยา ศาลแห่งนี ้เป็ นที่เคารพสักการะและเป็ นจุดรวมน� ้ำใจของ ชาวบ้ านมากว่า 100 ปี นอกจากนี ้ยังมี เจ้ าพ่อกวนอู เจ้ าแม่ทบั ทิม เจ้ าแม่สวรรค์ และเจ้ าพ่อสามตา (เทพเจ้ าแห่งทหารและการแสดง) และยังมีระฆังเนื ้อสัมฤทธิ์ ผสมเงินจารึกด้ วยภาษาจีน ซึง่ ผู้มีจิตศรัทธาได้ น�ำ มาถวายเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2413

Pho Lak Muang Suphanburi Shrine in Suphanburi

his sacred ground is respected by many locals in Suphanburi Province as well as most Thai citizens ever since traditional times. The ground places 2 Pra Na Rai monk relics carved from green stone wearing cylindrical hats which is an artform from Lopburi times. After paying respects in the shrine you can also go for a walk in the Mangkorn Sawan National Park where there is the largest dragon sculpture in the world located just nearby the shrine.

4.ศาลเจ้ าพ่ อหลักเมืองสุพรรณบุรี จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี Pho Lak Muang Suphanburi Shrine in Suphanburi สถานที่ศกั ดิ์สทิ ธิ์และเป็ นที่เคารพนับถือของชาวจังหวัดสุพรรณบุรีและ ประชาชนทัว่ ๆ ไปมาตังแต่ ้ สมัยโบราณกาล โดยภายในประดิษฐาน เทวรูปพระนารายณ์สององค์คกู่ นั สลักจากหินสีเขียว สวมหมวกทรง กระบอก เป็ นศิลปกรรมในสมัยลพบุรี และเมื่อกราบไหว้ ศาลเจ้ าพ่อ หลักเมืองเสร็ จเรี ยบร้ อยแล้ วยังสามารถเดินชมอุทยานมังกรสวรรค์ ซึง่ เป็ นอาคารรูปมังกรที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สดุ ในโลกในบริ เวณใกล้ ๆ กับศาล เจ้ าได้ อีกด้ วย

his temple is with the Chinese Mahayan Sector of Buddhist religion and stands out for its unique architecture that blends both Thai and Chinese Buddhist styles. There is a Chinese style arch entrance at the front and an 8-sided tower pedestal fro the Yen Bun statue. There are also world keeper statues placed near the front entrance while the placement of Mi Lek Pho Sak and Ui Tho Pho Sak sculptures are set both in front and behind. All of this makes the temple an excellent place to pay respects for the Chinese New Year.
