Kwankao s Homage to Yesteryear Young Thai designer Kwankao Svetavimala has been watching movies recently. Well, one movie in particular has recaptured her imagination, and it has inspired her latest Spring/Summer 2013 collection. For Kwankao has always been inspired by the movie Flashdance, starring Jennifer Beals. It is a story that strikes a chord with her, and it has now inspired her to recreate the look synonymous with Jennifer Beals, the actress who played Alex Owens, the factory worker by day turned energetic dancer by night. We are allowing you to dip into the bright explosion of candy colours that were around in the early 80 s she says, and I have used the title track from the movie for the title of my collection: What A Feeling! The film was a surprise success in 1983, becoming the third highest grossing film of the year, and if Kwankao s story bears any resemblance to the movie then it is in how surprised many people were with her early design efforts. Kwankao, nicknamed Paeng, is the daughter of a very famous father, food critic Santi Svetavimala. She has a strong background in music, having worked as a radio

DJ for many years. She was playing the piano at five, and switched to the cello at 16. So people were highly sceptical when she suddenly announced she was entering the fashion industry. What people failed to realise was that , despite her lack of formal training, her desire and passion were not going to hold her back, and she undertook a rigorous bout of self study, attending centres of haute couture like the Milan Fashion Show, and seeking tips and guidance from some of the gurus of the industry. Kwankao launched her fashion brand just two years ago, and she has already developed a very loyal following. Fans from as far afield as Australia and Europe now contact her office to place email orders. The Kwankao brand now consists of three stores in Bangkok, but plans are being made for expansion into other areas, with the Hong Kong and Australian marketplaces of significant interest. The girl herself remains remarkably down to earth; she still does stints as a radio DJ, and works as a presenter on TV. Her new collection is presented on the following pages.

Circus of the Angels Checks In
Bangkok Airways Celebrates 45 Years with an Extravaganza at Centara Grand The well established airline celebrated in high fashion with a party that was dubbed the Circus of the Angels . Leading models took to the stage wearing ornate gowns featuring angel wings. The entire stage took on the atmosphere of a circus with jugglers jostling for space alongside acrobats. A musicfest then took over with Kathreeya English performing a high energy set, followed by Billy Ogan and Burin Boonvisut. Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok Holds Sixth Cancer Care Run Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok in conjunction with the Thai Red Cross Society recently organized at Lumpini Park the Sixth Annual Cancer Care, a charity fun run aimed to raise funds for cancer research programmes. This year s recipient from the proceeds of the run is the Haematological Cancer Research Centre at Chulalongkorn Hospital. This year s run has been supported by top donors and sponsors such as the Embassy of Canada. The charity fun run was participated in by groups, families, individuals and companies who have generously set aside their time to participate in the annual event. His Excellency Ambassador Philip Calvert, Ambassador, Embassy of Canada, has graciously attended the charity fun run as the guest of honour together with various ambassadors and their wives as well as staff.
