2015 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta

Santi Kanchanabandhu, The Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organising Committee; Anoma Vongyai, Director Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Phuket Office; Chamroen Tipayapongtada, Phuket Governor; Rear Admiral Kittipong Rumakhom, Deputy Commander, Third Naval Area Command; Kevin Whitcraft, President of Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee and Andrew Swatdipakdi, General Manager of Kata Beach Resort and Spa (from left) joined together at the official Opening Ceremony at Kata Beach Resort and Spa.

One of the standout international sporting events in the Asia region, the 29th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, under Royal Patronage, hosted the official opening ceremony at Kata Beach Resort & Spa, attended by the Governor of Phuket and high ranking representatives from the Royal Thai Navy, Yacht Racing Association of Thailand and over 1,500 international, local sailors and participants. The opening ceremony hoisted the flag on what has long been recognized as one of the top events in the yachting world, both regionally and internationally. Over 168 keelboats, multihulls and dinghies from over 40 countries registered for the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 2015. They took part in a beautifully orchestrated sail pass, saluting His Majesty the King of Thailand on the glorious occasion of his 88th birthday. The sailpass took place before the start of the first day of racing on Monday 7th December, as teams competed for one of sailing’s most prestigious trophies, bestowed by His Majesty the King of Thailand. Kevin Whitcraft, President of the Organising Committe said, “We are incredibly proud that the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is able to take a regional role in contributing to the growth of the Thai sailing community and the yachting industry in Thailand. The King’s Cup gives Thai sailors a superb opportunity to experience international competition, and raise the cachet of Phuket as one of the world’s premier sports sailing destinations. The Regatta is hugely beneficial for Phuket, a part of Thailand already famed for its beautiful surroundings, legendary hospitality and suitability for hosting Asia’s ultimate regatta. We would like to thank all of the sponsors that support the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, working together to make the race an annual success for Phuket Island.” Consisting of five days of racing on scenic courses amidst the beautiful Andaman Sea islands, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta drew sailors and support crews from over 40 countries, including USA, Australia, Great Britain, Russia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and China. This international gathering is a key event for Phuket tourism, generating over 400 million baht for local businesses, and offering residual value as it helps to grow the Island of Phuket brand as a premier sports paradise on the world stage. Sailing in Thailand also enjoys a great boost from the regatta as young Thai sailors are able to develop their sailing skills in dinghies, and go on to join international keelboat crews competing for class honours. Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada spoke of the benefits the Regatta offers to Phuket’s marine tourism that both hotels and restaurants which enjoy a surge of custom before, during and after Regatta Week: “The seven-day regatta not only provides a direct boost to the local economy; it creates global media attention at the beginning of the high season, ushering in the holiday season with stirring images of the competition. It is a massive drive for sports and marine tourism throughout the island. Most importantly, this is the event that Phuket people have been very proud of as all international and local sailors are vying for the trophies, bestowed by our HM the King of Thailand” As well as bringing some of the world’s fastest independent racing teams, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is famed for its beachside party series. Revelry and camaraderie to the backdrop of fireworks and live music form a big part of the attraction for competitors and for sponsors also; a draw for Thai companies and international brands keen to grow their presence on a cosmopolitan platform, the parties are an essential event on the Phuket social calendar. The regatta offers sponsorship and media engagement opportunities as well as premier networking opportunities hosted across the party venues each night. Page 22

WindSikher, winner IRC 0 Phuket King's Cup 2015. Photo by Guy Nowell Keelboats and Multihulls were scheduled to compete firstly between 7-9 December, with 10th December reserved as a lay day for c ompetitors to adjust their strategies or fix their boats. The race continued on 11-12 December. The full complement of classes for the 2015 race year included IRC Zero (international 'Grand Prix' boats), the highly competitive IRC 1, IRC 2, along with Sports Boat, Modern Classic, Classic, Premier, Open Charter, Bareboat Charter, Cruising, Firefly 850 Sports, Multihulls Racing, Multihulls Cruising and Performance Catamaran. Opening day saw a grand fleet of 90 keelboats and multihulls in competition. The 2015 Regatta remained faithful to the classic King’s Cup formula of around-the-island courses in spectacular sunshine and light to moderate winds; the first day was particularly kind on both counts. Hannes Waimer, Skipper of Team Premier, chartered Oi! this year in IRC0, and competed with Phuket King’s Cup regulars Frank Pong (Jelik) and Sarab Jeet Singh (Windsikher II) for grand prix class honours. Hannes’ team put in a solid early claim to the Cup with a win in race 1, but Frank Pong’s Jelik hit back in race two, setting up a very open Class this year. Windsikher II was runner-up in both races but claimed winner of Day One.

Due to damage to the rigging of their new TP52 in transit, Kevin Whitcraft’s team were now racing on the GP42 Won Ma Rang in IRC1. Joining the class for the first time were Black Baza, Imagine (Ex. Babe) owned by Scott Bradley on their first outing, and Rerefine (Ex Windsikher) now owned by Kenn Eyears. Kenn’s team chalked up a victory in race one, winning by a scant 10-second margin on corrected times. Wan Ma Rang performed superbly in the second race, to nose home after time corrections were applied. Challenging the IRC2 Class this year was Evgenil Nekiforov’s new Cookson 12 Megazip, which headed the ratings, followed by two 44.7’s, Roland Danes’ Jessandra II, Simon Piff’s Kerr32 Rekering Dream, and Krabi Sailing School’s Mumm 30 Judy, all competing with the Japanese 40.7 team on Krasu. The Commodore of Phuket Yacht Club, Scott Duncanson, was racing on Jessandra II in IRC 2. In race one it was the Japanese who were dominant, immediately rising to the top of the Class. Roland’s team won out in the second race ahead of the Japanese team by just five seconds on corrected times – a classic Phuket King’s Cup day one contest! In the Premier Class it was a battle of the X55’s with defending Champions Pine Pacific challenged by Australian Team Audeamus, previous Champion Baby Tonga, newcomer Jeanneau 57 Raincloud and the Perennial Swan 55 Big A. Pine Pacific threw down the gauntlet with a first round win, taunting rivals with a huge victory.

EFG Mandrake III - Photo by Guy Nowell Bareboat Charter Class comprised a fleet of 14 traditional shallow draft bareboat yachts, including four Japanese teams and seven Russian teams. Andrey Novikov skippering Alexa was quickest in race one, with compatriot Andrei Duvanov and Uhuru second. The racing-spec charter yachts competing in Open Charter included past champions Popeye (Ex Sailplane) and Venture, being challenged by the Big Boy Sailing Team on the new charter configured J130 “Jing Jing”, Phuket Yacht Club’s Vice Commodore Mick Kealy on Beaux Esprit and the ever-present Russian charter team on the First 45f5 Sita. Popeye took the first race, and by a not inconsiderable margin ahead of Big Boy Sailing Team. The Modern Classic Class saw the first battle of the three Phuket-based Farr 1104’s challenging previous King’s Cup Winners Windstar and Madam Butterfly closely followed by 2 Platus and the Chinese team from Krabi Sailing School on Mas Alegre. Thai Navy 1 came in five minutes behind day one winners Farrgo Express skippered by John Vickery. Cruising Class featured a range of returning boats including previous winner Lady Bubbly. She was victorious again on the first day, with a clear performance margin over the trailing pack.

The final day of the 29th Phuket King's Cup Regatta 2015 was sponsored by Kata Group, with Kata Beach Resort & Spa providing the home of both race control, the regatta's Royal Awards Ceremony and the closing party. Before the fireworks were lit, there was some serious class warfare to play out. Keelboats and multihulls hit the water for one last run, as teams fought for the honour to claim Phuket King's Cup victory in the name of His Majesty the King of Thailand. In IRC0, Windsikher II skippered by Sarab Jeet Singh made a great fist of challenging for King's Cup glory in 2015 with a string of first and second place finishes. They carried an advantage in both points and momentum going into the last day, and seemingly only an unexpected upset could derail their fantastic run. They took both race 10 and race 11, two bullets, as if underlining the completeness of the week's massive performance. Sarab Jeet Singh, skipper of Windsikher II, is delighted to finally win a Phuket King's Cup Regatta, after coming second and third in the past in many runs out since 1997: "We had the points advantage going in, but anything can happen, any equipment failure or other issue en route. Second place is a threat, and so we decided to sail the same way, no messing about, with keen roundings. This is my sixteenth King's Cup since 1997, and my first win. Our Welbourn 52 custom boat had the same crew as my other boat (Sydney 40), and we've basically enjoyed ourselves and did really well. Courses were well organized but the light breezes are always challenging here. The team did well and the only reason I bought this boat was because I knew we had a team that could step up."

Page 26

Among the IRC1 entrants, Kenn Eyears and Rerefine (formerly Windsikher) led the class ahead of Kevin Whitcraft's Wan Ma Rang which chased by a single point. Wan Ma Rang took line honours in race 10, but placed 90 seconds behind Rerefine on corrected times. In race 11, Rerefine won again to finally nail home their Regatta trophy claim for 2015. Japanese team Karasu skippered by Yasuo Nanamori led IRC2 with a total of four race wins. Just one point behind was Roland Dane's Jessandra II team, with a proper grudge match to be decided on the final day. Mick Tilden's Fujin team threw a spanner in the works by claiming race 10, leaving the two leaders to fight it out for second place. An incredible battle ensued, with Jessandra II beating Karasu by 24 seconds on elapsed time and a skinny nine seconds on corrected. In race 11, Karasu struck back, the resulting final day's points scramble seeing Karasu sitting pretty and three points clear. A classic Phuket King's Cup finale! Pine Pacific had already won the Premier Class and settled into a gentle cruise home on the final day, although, true to form, still taking line honours (and then another win, just for luck). Audeamus skippered by Kim Ramen and Adrian Fini took a consolation win in race seven. Phuket Orchid Resort & Spa was the setting for Friday's celebratory party, with sponsors TAT, Siam Winery & Montclair and Haadthip PCL treating sailors and VIP guests to a magnificent party around the Orchid's beautiful central swimming pool. Live music and complimentary drinks were the perfect ingredients to a happening and fun evening at the popular Phuket Orchid Resort & Spa, as sailors and media guests partied until late.

Elephant Parade Bangkok Opening Night Celebrities Showcase Their Creative Designs

Cindy Sirinya Bishop with her elephant design Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas along with Elephant Parade® and Siam Paragon Shopping Centre launched the world’s largest open air art exhibition in December - Elephant Parade Bangkok 2015 - in the heart of the Thai capital. The exhibition, featuring eighty eight brightly decorated elephant statues has been staged to honour the 88th birthday of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world’s longest reigning monarch. The first Elephant Parade was held in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 2007 and has since exhibited in many cities around the world including London, Singapore, Amsterdam, Milan and Hong Kong. Bangkok Elephant Parade 2015 is a first for Thailand and will be the only one for the capital. All eighty–eight elephants showcased in Elephant Parade Bangkok are available for the public to bid for and own in an online auction and in February 2016 a final selection of elephants will be auctioned off by Christies at a gala dinner to be held at Anantara Siam Bangkok. Proceeds from both auctions will be donated to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation who in turn will select strategic partners to drive forward key projects including building the first elephant clinic in Chiang Mai’s Mae Teang Valley, expanding their Positive Reinforcement Target Training Project to even more elephants and helping protect the wild elephants in Thailand’s National Parks. “The more awareness that is raised on the plight of domestic and wild elephants in Thailand, the better the chances we have for their survival,” William E. Heinecke, Chairman and CEO of Minor International, the parent company of Anantara, Hotels Resorts & Spas, commented. “I can’t think of a better way to raise awareness and money than bringing the largest open air art exhibition in support of Asian Elephants to Bangkok.” Mayuree Chaipromprasith, Senior Executive Vice President, Marketing Promotion Division of Siam Paragon Development Co.,Ltd., said, “Siam Paragon, as the world-class shopping destination in Bangkok is proud to be part of giving support in hosting the Elephant Parade® Bangkok. This exhibition is destined to pay homage to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the King’s eighty-eighth birthday anniversary on the fifth of this December. The event also aims at raising funds for the world’s biggest campaign for giving support to elephants. We are also willing to be a spokesperson who promotes and shows the power of love and compassion among Thais toward elephants. They really deserve conservation. We expect this exhibition will create a very good impression and encourage the general public to give more their love and protection to elephants.”

FLYING THE FLAG

Pimpisa Tinpalit

Flying the Flag in Australia

Pimpisa hails from Bangkok, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Fine Art. After numerous years of studying, and then teaching art in various universities, she felt like getting away for a while and decided to travel. She fell in love with Melbourne in Victoria and lives there to this day. Pimpisa found that there were great opportunities in the world of art in that city and she therefore decided to settle down there and continue her life as a full time artist. She often returns home and feels that Bangkok offers a lot more chances for young artists to shine these days, with the opening of a lot of new galleries. Nevertheless, she is very happy in Australia, where she has now lived for seven years. Specialising is sculptures, with animals and humans being her favourite subjects, Pimpisa recently completed her latest exhibition “Freedom and Captivity”, which she exhibited at La Lanta Fine Art Gallery in Bangkok. Pimpisa sculpts every day, and aims to maintain her childlike sense of wonder by constantly creating a whimsically surreal world using mainly fibreglass and bronze. She uses her skill at rendering a wide variety of textures to give each of her pieces a vivid physicality, bringing her fantastic characters to full blooded life. Inspired by her desire to tell “the story of imagination,” Tinpalit also brings the viewer’s imagination into it as well.

FLYING THE FLAG

Pailin Chongchitnant Flying the Flag in Canada

Pailin “Pai” Chongchitnant was born and raised in southern Thailand, where she spent most of her childhood in the kitchen, squeezing fresh coconut milk and grinding pork. Moving to the USA, Pailin studied Cordon Bleu cuisine in San Francisco, before moving up the coast to settle in Vancouver, British Columbia. After creating and hosting a popular You Tube cooking show, Hot Thai Kitchen, where she famously instructed a host of devoted supporters on the joys of Thai cooking, she boosted her following by becoming one of the regional experts on One World Kitchen, a TV show where she expounds further on the cooking techniques of the country of her birth. Pailin is also training to be a high school cooking teacher, and says that if she had to choose one Thai meal above all others it would have to be her grandma’s Hainanese chicken rice. When Pailin debuted on One World Kitchen her choice of demonstration dishes were Thai hot and sour soup, a beef Penang curry using her own curry paste and deep fried shrimp in a tamarind sauce. She also recently showed viewers how to make two different styles of stir fry. Describing her Hot Thai Kitchen videos Pailin says “If you’re looking for a recipe for a Thai dish, you can usually find it on the internet in less than a minute. But I want to share something more: a true understanding of the steps and the ingredients, and even the cultural background of the dish. This is what really excites me, and this is what Hot Thai Kitchen is all about”. “After high school, I headed for the University of British Columbia in Vancouver to study nutritional sciences (it had to be food-related!). Vancouver’s multicultural food offerings absolutely marvelled me and deepened my passion. Convinced I wanted to devote my life to food, I started working in professional kitchens after university. My love for cooking later took me to San Francisco where I studied culinary arts at Le Cordon Bleu, and continued to work in the restaurant industry after graduation.” “Though I was revelling in the new foods of the West, I always delighted at any opportunity to tell my friends all about Thai cooking, and that’s when I realized how much I loved to teach people about Thai cuisine, and how much I missed it. And at the suggestion of my brother, Hot Thai Kitchen was born in my little San Francisco apartment!” “I am now back in Vancouver, but I go home to Thailand every year to see my family, to stay in touch with my culture, and to find more interesting things to share with you all!” “Pai’s Kitchen is the second show on my YouTube Channel where I share recipes and other food-related videos outside the scope of Thai Cuisine.” Pailin (right) with her fellow One World Kitchen hosts. The show is currently airing on weekdays at 6 pm Eastern Time on Gusto TV and recipes can be found online at gustotv.com and oneworldkitchen.ca

“ULTRADISTANCIA” by Argentinean artist, Federico Winer La Lanta Fine Art Until January 7, 2016 As part of the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Argentina, La Lanta Fine Art in cooperation with the Argentina Embassy are currently showcasing “ULTRADISTANCIA,” an exhibition of the Argentinean artist, Federico Winer, who transforms the aerial view of the world into a stunning photographic art project. Base on the capabilities of Google Earth’s satellite camera, “ULTRADISTANCIA” features fifteen unconventional perspective of our planet. Neighborhoods, roads, mountains, stations, shipping containers, and houses turn into kaleidoscopic compositions. Enhanced through the digital interplay of colour and luminosity, the series distorts our perception of the earth surface, where common landmarks resemble paintings and topography is visualized through a spectrum of colour. Metaphorical to endless travels from one corner of the earth to the next, Winer’s photography represents the encounter of natural and human creations as well as the crossbreed of both. Winer allows viewers to travel vicariously through Google Earth’s trips from airports to highways to famous cities. “ULTRADISTANCIA” reminds us of the existence of these places. The acclaimed “ULTRADISTANCIA” series strikes the news with articles and reviews from prestigious media all over the world such as The Huffington Post, The Creators Project, Vice, La Reppublica, DesignBoom, Archdaily, Le Journal de Montreal, Forbes, Courrier International, PEI Magazine, Gizmodo, Pixable, Lens Culture, Art Slant, CO. Design, City Lab, 6sqft, Urbanophil, among others. “ULTRADISTANCIA” was exhibited in JanKossen Contemporary Gallery of New York and in GSPF 2015 in Melbourne Australia. DRACULA to Haunt Bangkok

Bram Stoker's Dracula, the pinnacle of brooding erotic horror and benchmark for the self-made lustful gothic genre is making its Asian theatre premiere in Bangkok. Produced by award-winning producer Paul Ewing and Ewing Entertainment Worldwide (UK), the world's most infamous tale of obsession, savagery and desire spawned a hundred years of derivative sub-genres in vampire fiction (Twilight, True Blood, Buffy, Interview with a Vampire etc.), and now is retold through a terrifying and lavishly produced stage adaptation starring Hugo Chakrabongse (far left) and Myra Molloy, in Dracula: Blood is Life.

The production fuses Thai, European and British cast and production teams to create a premium retelling of the Dracula legend for International and Thai audiences. Hugo Chakrabongse's sexy energy, masculine power and inescapably captivating charm make him an ideal Dracula; Myra Molloy's beauty, grace and towering performance ability connect the tale to new audiences in a beautifully real way. This production is a major ground-breaking moment for the Arts in Thailand; a fashionable, amatory and bitingly modern production appealing to audiences seeking a very premium entertainment experience. Ewing Entertainment Worldwide is launching the Asian Premiere at the magnificent Siam Pic-Ganesha Theatre, an ultra-modern world class venue with 1046 seats, right in the heart of Bangkok, with a run in Thailand spanning from February 12th to 6th of March. The opening night will feature special guest Dacre Stoker, author and filmmaker, the great grandnephew of Irish author Bram Stoker, as well as a large gathering of Thai celebrities and VIP guests. The play itself uses Steven Dietz's 1997 stage version as a starting point and focuses on the essence of Stoker's original – sexual scandal, moral uncertainty and fear of the unknown. It also recognises the energies of Bangkok as the location of the production, combined with the wealth of modern vampire material on TV, film and in popular fiction. Rachael Forbes' (above) incredible costume designs give a high-end, fashionable connotation to the dark, sexy and gothic themes throughout. The production team led by director Joe Harmston (below, left) has created a production that is dynamic, contemporary, alert to the issues inherent in the material - and utterly terrifying. Joe Harmston, Director, explains, "True horror arises out of engagement with real people; we believe passionately in Stoker's characters in order to care for them when peril stalks. The set design, lighting and illusion effects will illuminate the minutiae of our exploration of the erotic tensions at the heart of the battle between Good and Evil. We have focused on delivering a high-end production suitable for Bangkok's luxury-obsessed audience; in this respect, Dracula is the brand people recognise, but we present it in stunning, modern and very exclusive way. It is a glamorously cutting edge production in every sense." Paul Ewing, Producer of Dracula: Blood is Life, said, "Although this production is in English, the use of subtitles, visual effects and special effect will ensure every audience member has an exhilarating theatrical experience, and will be able to enjoy the storyline, which remains accessible to all (a remarkable facet of the original novel). Our production promises to be an exciting moment for Theatre in Bangkok, and we look forward to welcoming you into the intoxicating and terrifyingly dark world of Dracula!" Lonely in Bangkok: A Photographic Exhibition by Jean-Sebastien Faure 9 January – 28 February 2016 [Opening party Sat 9 Jan from 6.30 – 9 pm.] Jean-Sebastien Faure’s ‘Lonely in Bangkok’ is powerful, formal, and static, with almost military precision and barely concealed violence and frenzied activity—the concrete itself was poured onto the earth and made to rise by ecologically violent means, after all. “I engaged in a dialogue with this city,” he says, “that speaks of itself and of those who form it. Because, even without the shadow of a silhouette, there is everywhere in this city an imprint of what people are.” It’s rare to find a photographer who has chosen to depict loneliness and disorientation in a teeming city like Bangkok with empty streets in the vertical frame, which is harder to get right than the ever popular horizontal composition. Alienated by his inability to speak Thai or even English, French freelance photographer Faure used this technique to convey his four lost years in Bangkok, wandering through the labyrinthine concrete jungle whose horizons are hidden behind billboards and high-rises, leaving him with no sense of direction. “There was never a city that so rattled me with the violence and the richness of its contrasts: Bangkok, and the spectacle it unfurls, force-feeds us to nausea but never really satisfies us… Of course, I needed to photograph it but I wanted to inscribe it with this profound solitude.” Self-taught photographer Jean-Sebastien Faure, born 1969 in Paris, started his career in 1989 capturing music concerts and festivals. His work straddles the line between fine art and documentary photography. He has been published by numerous well-known newspapers and magazines such as Le Monde, Liberation and The Independent. Kathmandu Photo Gallery Open daily except Monday, from 11 am to 7 pm

Louise Truslow: A Retrospective Neilson Hays Library January 14-31, 2016 Opening Reception January 14, 2016 7-9 pm Marking 20 years since she started painting, the Neilson Hays presents a Retrospective of British artist Louise Truslow; featuring works from many of her exhibitions of the past two decades and encompassing all of the media she now works in. The exhibition opens with a Reception on Thursday, January 14th from 7-9 pm. and continues until the end of the month. Over the years Louise has become well known for her evocative oils and watercolours - particularly those depicting monks, umbrellas and South East Asian scenes. More recently she has started working in glass and to a lesser extent, bronze. Her glass is kiln-formed and all her work is created using recycled crystalline glass, which she sources from a local manufacturer.

Some of the works in this exhibition are from the artist's private collection and the latest paintings were exhibited at the Royal Overseas League in London during 2015. Louise came to Thailand in 1990 and has lived in Asia for over 30 years. Her background is in Performance Arts and although she has no formal training in painting or glassmaking, her work has been exhibited in several cities and is held in private and corporate collections around the world.

“Genii Loci” An Exhibition by Rush Pleansuk at S Gallery

Despite the deterioration of the physical body of a person we cling to, the personal belongings that are left as the keepsakes will replace and represent their existence in this world and as remain as traces to our spiritual journey to another. From the simple joys in childhood to his personal displacement to the concrete jungle, Rush has certainly come a long way. Currently caught up in the rat race in the big city, Rush is longing for a return to the nature that he once left behind. The artist sees himself living in a time that's a fusion of the past (background), present (reality) and future (dream). This world view forms the basis of his life and art that portrays the monstrous city in which one's survival depends on having both abstract and material needs met. Rush came to prominence as an artist when his artworks were selected for La Fête's "Designer's Week". Thanks to his love of art and science, Rush studied architecture at Kasetsart University and graduated in 2001. His architectural process has often involved searching from the cultural and spiritual root of his customers. His passion with architecture and habitation has a direct impact on the way he creates his masterpieces, themselves symbols of the transition between the living and the dead, past and present, invisible and visible. Through his art he reveals our memory in tangible form. Rush's latest art collection titled "Genii Loci" is the result of his journey in search of raw materials mined from the ancestors memories. It's the nostalgic memories of his childhood that have endowed his art with its spirit. His artworks tell the story of spiritual growth from these personal belongings that have been passed down through the generations and have now turned into a variety of elegant tangible forms. Each piece has its own character depending on the story behind the derived materials used to create them. Rush's art celebrates not only the beauty of form and function, but it goes a step further by exhibiting a cultural dimension as evidenced by the embedding of his childhood memories in his art form.

"Sense" portrays the transience of human life through the message that the texture of a wooden home, like that of human beings, is subject to decay through time. "Memory" reflects the artist's desire to search for spirits dwelling in objects. "Memory" reflects the use of memories of people and places as embedded in a collection of old personal effects. These objects serve as the artist's raw materials for creating works of art that can grow into the "homes of spirits" the same way mushrooms have sprouted up from a piece of wood. The artworks in this section bring back memories of his family and are used as a memory box to store the valued keepsakes from our loved ones. "Samsara" (or "time") represents the cycle of the seasons as well as the many moments in our life that we have wanted frozen. The changing of the seasons is like the rise and fall of a curtain in the theatre symbolising the beginning and the end of a real-life drama. The artist uses gold leaf to illustrate the stark contrast between the fragility of gold leaf and the durability of gold as a substance. The exhibition is an intentional integration of time, memory, loss and recollection that, through art, has transformed the abstract into the concrete and bridges us to relate to the past once again. The exhibition portrays both a lost environment and an existing chaotic one in which people struggle to survive emotionally. The exhibition serves as a dialogue that attempts to turn our society on to the memory of our ancestors and the need to preserve our cultural roots.

"Genii Loci" is a Latin term for the protective spirit of a place. Some Asian cultures regard personal belongings and idols as the dwelling places of spirits, a belief that still resonates to this day. The artist is able to render this spiritual belief in physical form by drawing his inspiration from the Thai Traditions assigned as the dwelling place of the guardian spirit who is responsible for the safety of its occupants. Rush's art is a reinterpretation of this traditional belief through the right blend of design, function and artistic value. The Genii Loci collection – on the theme of "the cycle of life" – is divided into three parts: "Body, "Sense", "Memory" along with another element: "Samsara". "Body" focuses on the cycle of growth and the human body." Page 52
