Manna from Minimalism A Simpl Success Story When a mutual friend introduced Onpawee “Amm” Kittipong (above left) and Napawan “Poon” Deewajee (above right) to each other she didn’t realize she was sowing the seeds of a burgeoning business partnership. The pair live near each other on the outskirts of Bangkok, and soon realised they also worked near each other, on either side of Benjasiri Park. Amm, 25, was working as public relations officer at Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel and Poon, 26, worked as a graphic designer in offices near the Phrom Phong Skytrain station. A friendship ensued when the pair began regular joint commutes between work and home, and one day the conversation moved on to designs. Poon mentioned how she would love to come up with some basic sketch plans for a set of watches, and Amm mentioned how she knew contacts that could bring these designs to life. Four basic designs were created, with the aim of giving customers a simple yet well-constructed and reliable timepiece for under 2,000 baht. The name Simpl was hatched, to reflect the minimalistic standards, a website was launched, and the initial demand was so strong that the entire stock was sold within two months. The pair are now busy re-stocking to meet the dozens of pre-orders that have already been made.
also in the pipeline. A premium quality watch is also being developed, but the aim is to still keep the cost of this down below 3,000 baht. Amm says: “Simpl is an independent lifestyle product brand based in Bangkok. The aim is to provide a well-designed unisex watch with a reasonable price that everyone can afford. Our watches are skillfully designed by using the blending of modern elements with a touch of classical aesthetics to create “Timeless Modernity”. “Our main aim is to make our product perfectly match each personality and different lifestyle. An array of our well-designed timepieces has been carefully created to provide a wide range of stylishly classic selections, ensuring the best possible match for every customer and gender.” The first Simpl collection was launched on July 6, 2014 and was available in four colours: Amber Black, Amber Brown, Classic Black and Classic Brown. All have a 39mm case diameter, genuine leather straps in black or brown, 3atm water resistance and a reliable Miyota Japanese Movement. The stainless steel case and dial face itself provides two colours: luxury brushed rose gold case with matte black dial and brushed silver case with classic white dial. Anybody interested should check out the Simpl website (simplstyle.com) for more details in Thai and English and to catch news of the soon to be announced new range.

From Barbie to B
Beau Monde
Vararat “Jenny Narang
When Vararat “Jenny” Narang was a little girl she dreamed of being a fashion designer. When her mother bought her a Barbie doll and a set of outfits she was horrified to see her daughter had cut up all the clothes and was busy sewing them all back together again.
Her early interest in the trade was probably sparked by watching her father at work. He has run a successful tailoring enterprise, King’s Fashion House, in central Bangkok for over 15 years, and has spent over 25 years in the industry.
Jenny explains: “Mum was always asking me why I was cutting up the clothes she had bought for Barbie, and I had to explain that I knew I could do a better job! I was forever telling her that I wanted to be a fashion designer when I grew up!”
When Jenny was a teenager she began studying fashion trends in magazines, and started to become familiar with fabrics from around the world. At 19, she was already doing her own designs for her father’s international customers, who began asking for unique creations.
Page 36
www.bangkokscene.com
“I began by just creating for myself at first, but my friends were all asking for party dresses and wedding dresses”, she continues, “but I still like to design clothes to please myself sometimes, and I always like to wear one of my creations each time I go to a party.” Jenny now works full time at her father’s company, and has helped it to grow exponentially in recent years. Now 24, she has become a globetrotter, visiting country after country establishing an even greater international customer base for King’s Fashion House.
In the last six months alone she has visited Burma, Singapore, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, China, Laos, Qatar and Macau. But the businesswoman is still a designer at heart, and hopes, in the not too distant future, to launch her own fashion label.

Expression of Freedom Burmese Art Exhibition at Neilson Hays Library Neilson Hays Library is the only venue in Thailand to present this group of five talented emerging Burmese artists who are unique, affordable and sought by many private collectors as an investment. Showing internationally in various galleries, all artists have a strong but unique interpretive style. Highly collectible, the artists, Shwe Thein, Win Tit, Soe Aung, Zaw Zaw Co, and Wai Zin Phyo are offering their paintings at an amazing 40% discount for this exhibit only. You can meet featured artist Shwe Thein at the Opening Reception on Saturday 4th October from 4pm to 9pm. Shwe Thein is an accomplished and formally trained artist who has developed a captivating contemporary style using old Burmese painting traditions with an interpretation in models and colours. His style speaks to the heart with modern melancholy of the past. A renowned grand master, Shwe Thein’s work shares an accomplished, but very personal technique and rich imagination. In the near future, look for Shwe Thein at prominent art shows such as Art Basel or FIAC in Paris.
Page 44

Win Tit is a professor at the Yangon University of Fine Arts. His work is well known and has an impressionism character with a strong Burmese personality. His paintings are powerful but delicate and subtle at the same time, evoking a deep meditation. He is a genuine contemporary expression of the “Burmese Days”. Soe Aung was a lost artist in Mandalay and recently rediscovered by a famous gallery in Yangon. Soe’s resolutely contemporary characters were ignored before the recent political restructuring. His special style is decorative, awakens the imagination, and makes him a recognized artist. Zaw Zaw Co has a dreamy personality in his work. Famous in Burma and abroad, Zaw Zaw Co’s works are currently exhibited in galleries in Singapore, Hong Kong, and other places around the region. To collect his works is considered by many to be a “coup de coeur”; an unforgettable pleasure to have his painting at home. Wai Zin Phyo represents the remodelling of the Burmese tradition with contrasted effects and vivid colours. His works enact an astounding impact on the viewer with their expressionistic, contemporary style.
Visionaries: 40 Years of Thai Fashion Through the Eyes of Photographers
The trend-setting ideopolis “Siam Center” joins hands with Bangkok Fashion Society and Thailand's most prominent fashion photographers for the greatest fashion collaboration in 40 years in the monumental event that marks a historical milestone in Thai fashion – “Visionaries: 40 Years of Thai Fashion Through the Eyes of Photographers,” on show until October 5th, 2014.
“Siam Center positions itself as a trend-setting ideopolis and Thailand's first shopping mall of international standard,” said Chanisa Kaewruen, deputy managing director of Siam Piwat Co., Ltd. “But most importantly, Siam Center is remembered all through these years as the center of the most visionary fashion, housing the largest number of leading Thai designer with over 40 brands of both prominent names and new fashion rookies. In this regard, Siam Center has been offering support and stimulation to the Thai fashion industry all along. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Siam Center, we would love to have an event that marks a monumental milestone in the Thai fashion history, hence the collaboration with the Bangkok Fashion Society and a group of Thailand's leading fashion photographers. The fruit of this get-together of Thailand's most influential fashion personalities is “Visionaries : 40 Years of Thai Fashion Through the Eyes of Photographers” – the greatest fashion event in 40 years.”

“It's a great opportunity for Bangkok Fashion Society to be a part of this important exhibition because this year also commemorates a decade of work BFS has been doing in pushing forward Thai fashion.” said Polpat Asavaprapha, president of Bangkok Fashion Society. “This exhibition is one of the most challenging missions BFS has ever taken because we are determined to make it a phenomenon that everyone can be proud of the talent, power and potential of people in the Thai fashion industry.” Set to be the greatest fashion gathering in the Thai fashion industry in 40 years, “Visionaries : 40 Years of Thai Fashion Through the Eyes of Photographers” will mark the first of three major phenomenal events in the Thai fashion history: the first ever fashion photo exhibition on the theme of Modern Thai Fashion by a group of over 20 celebrated fashion photographers, the first ever full-scale retrospective photo exhibition to honor Thailand's legendary fashion photographer Witaya Marayat and the biggest gala dinner in the history of Thai fashion. “The easiest way to study the evolution of modern Thai fashion is going through fashion photography, which is the the best reflection of fashion in any given period.“ said photographer Wasan Puengprasert. “However, finding old fashion photographs isn't easy because you can only see them in old fashion or lifestyle magazines, which are usually in the possession of a few private collectors. What we are doing is going directly to the origin of these photos, which are the photographers who fired the shutter.
