Roberto Cavalli boutique at Central Embassy hosted a cocktail party and fashion parade to show off the Italian brand’s latest designs on Friday September 5th. Master of Ceremonies Elizabeth Sadler introduced some of Bangkok’s leading celebrity models, including Cindy Sarinya Bishop and Phitsinee Tanwiboon. The Bangkok flagship store is 220 square metres in size, and displays the full range of Roberto Cavalli products, including ready to wear collections for men and women, accessories, fragrances and sunglasses.
There is also a private VIP room to provide celebrities and socialites with a discreet shopping experience. Progressive expansion is planned by the Cavalli Group throughout Asia, with the opening of new stores in Singapore, Macau and Manila already planned.

Renowned Japanese Ramen House Comes to Bangkok
Internationally-acclaimed Japanese eatery IPPUDO brings the ultimate ramen experience to Thailand with the opening of its first outlet at luxury shopping centre, Central Embassy.
In an interview, he told the reporter, “I strongly desire that through a humble bowl of ramen, the Japanese spirit can be spread around the world.”
With over 80 stores in Japan, and about 40 international stores in places such as New York, Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, Seoul, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing and Chengdu, IPPUDO (pronounced ih-PU-doh) has gained a worldwide following with customers patiently queuing for a taste of what many have dubbed “cosmos in a bowl”: a signature rich and flavourful tonkotsu (pork-based) broth combined with delicate hand-pulled noodles made from a secret recipe.

A Tropical Wonderland
Bangkok’s 28th Annual International Flower Show Taking ‘A Tropical Wonderland’ as its colourful theme, Swissôtel Nai Lert Park Bangkok’s 28th Annual International Flower Show, from Thursday 2nd – Sunday 5th October 2014, 10:00-20:00 hrs, will offer a feast for all the senses. Her Royal Highness Princess Srirasm will graciously preside over the grand opening of the festival that celebrates the 31-year legacy of Nai Lert Park. All proceeds of the festival will be donated to the Thai with Disability Foundation and Charity Funds for Dental Prostheses. Elephants are the Real Winners as the King’s Cup Draws to a Close in Bangkok
After four days of fun festivities and trunk to trunk action, the 13th annual King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament came to a close on Sunday August 31st. Taking place in Bangkok for the first time, 16 teams with players from around the world showcased skilful play and created many memorable on-pitch moments, with the tournament resulting in new King’s Cup champions. Sunday’s final, which was presided over by the King of Thailand’s royal representative, Privy Councilor Real Admiral Mom Luang Usni Pramoj, saw King Power Duty Free and Audemars Piguet go head to head in a penalty shoot-out, with a thrilling ‘sudden death’ play-off finally clinching the win for King Power. The tournament was introduced to Thailand in 2001 by Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas and has grown to become one of the biggest charitable events in Thailand, raising funds for projects that better the lives of Thailand’s elephant population. Friday night’s gala dinner at Anantara Bangkok Riverside Resort & Spa hosted a gathering of top dignitaries, players, media and well known celebrities, with the night’s auction raising 4.5 million Thai Baht, taking the total raised to date by the tournament to an impressive US$900,000 (THB 28.7 million). The tournament took place at the Siam Polo Park at VR Sports Club in Bangkok, with lead sponsors Audemars Piguet, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas. This year’s players included the New Zealand All Blacks’ Mark “Cowboy” Shaw, Olo Brown and Charlie Riechelmann, Thai supermodels and many leading international horse polo players. A total of 50 street elephants took part in this year’s tournament, during which they were well fed, received essential vitamin supplements, full veterinary checks and care for the duration of the event. With free admission, the event has something for everyone, kicking off with a spectacular opening parade, with the opening ceremony overseen by Thailand’s last ‘elephant spirit men’ (Kru Ba Yai), traditional dancers, plus the daily trunk-to-trunk action on the pitch. Day two saw the tournament host two thousand children from schools all over Bangkok. Known as Chang Noi Day (Little Elephant Day), the children were invited to get up close with the elephants and learn more about their national animal. A range of educational walks, games and activities all teaching the benefits of elephant conservation and well-being were put on by the organisers.
Saturday was ‘Ladies Day’ or the new ‘Ascot’ of Bangkok. Ladies from all walks of life dressed to impress with the best dressed lady winning a week’s holiday at NIYAMA in the Maldives. The day also saw a ‘High Tea-Off’ competition with three Bangkok hotels competing to be voted the best high tea. On pitch entertainment included Thai bands and a specially choreographed show by Tiffany Show Pattaya, Thailand’s most famous trans-gender cabaret. The tournament was once again a great success, and is growing year on year as a key event in Thailand’s sporting calendar, each year attracting more sponsors and raising more funds for Thailand’s elephant population. Spectators, players and media came from all corners of the globe, including the USA and Canada, New Zealand, India, all over Europe, the UAE, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and many local visitors from Bangkok and around Thailand. Projects to benefit from the 2014 tournament are currently being finalised and will include an extension of the ongoing Thai Elephant Therapy Project being undertaken since 2009 in conjunction with Chiang Mai University Department of Occupational Therapy, with future clinics to include children with Down syndrome and other conditions. Other significant benefits from money raised by the tournament include: building the first elephant hospital in Krabi in the southern part of Thailand; a THB 500,000 gantry to help lame elephants stand, donated to the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre (TECC); 4,000 trees planted in Hua Hin to shelter elephant corridors from electric fencing in the area; funding the first educational computer application for children to teach them the importance of conservation and protection of wild elephants in Thailand and funding Asia’s first workshop to show traditional elephant trainers and camp owners the benefits of Positive Reinforcement Training for domesticated elephants.

The Colours of Nature: Exhibition by Soonthorn Sukkaew
Koi Art Gallery is proud to present “The Colours of Nature” art exhibition to be held from September 19 - October 24. This exhibition showcases the latest artworks by Soonthorn Sukkaew who expresses season changes through abstract hues and strokes. Since a young age, Soothorn Sukkaew has expressed emotions and visions through the bold strokes of his brushes. In his current exhibition, the artist has transformed seasons into sights of faded visions. Looking deep into the curves and edges of his strokes, subtle forms and images materialize into awkward and ethereal subjects. The spirit of the artist’s works is presented within a framework of compelling colours and solidified texture, creating a self-conscious balance between two. As expressed by the artist, he uses abstract works and definitions to break the rules of painting: there is no real dimension, measured reality or structured objects. Imagination, freedom and colours take charge and exhibit an awareness of plausible realities to the viewer. Soonthorn Sukkaew’s abstract works are appreciated and viewed by audiences from all different walks of life. His vibrant message of colour and nature bring forth a universal appeal.

“Undress Me” - A Photo Exhibition by Michael Shaowanasai From Sunday September 21st to Sunday October 4th, Maggie Choo’s is excited to showcase some recent works from Thailand’s most prolific and provocative photographer, Michael Shaowanasai. Quirky, humouristic, thought-provoking, very personal and above all unique, Michael’s self-portraits are always calling for a second look. To some, the body of work shown can be reminiscent of Cindy Sherman’s self portraits in her attempt to showcase the limitless possibilities of the art of disguise and the quest of one’s identity, for, Michael’s photographs depicting the author cross-dressing or naked with just a body paint covering his behind, are an invitation to mock society’s codes of formal appearances. With multiple references to uniforms or fashion attires, the prints call the viewer to think twice on how the outside can be deceiving to identify or stigmatize the individual. The context of Maggie Choo’s predominantly gay night, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ (Oscar Wilde’s play mocking the rigidity of the Victorian Era) offers a true relevance to display such a body of work where the subject (the author himself) seems to crystalize the untold fantasies of the viewers, staged alternatively as a woman or just a naked man. About the artist: Michael Shaowanasai, (born in 1964 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), is a Thai-American artist and actor who lives in Bangkok. His works includes performance art, photography, video, film and installations. He graduated from School of Law at Chulalongkorn University in 1985, earned a bachelor's of fine arts degree at San Francisco Art Institute in 1994 and a master's of fine arts from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1996. He is a founding member of Project 304, a Bangkok-based contemporary art group.

His solo shows include MS@OAS, a photography installation at Open Art Space in Bangkok, Thailand, as well as shows at the Fujikawa Gallery in Osaka, Japan, the 4A gallery in Sydney, Australia and Ottawa Art Gallery, Canada. Among his film and video works is the 2003 feature film, The Adventure of Iron Pussy, which he co-directed with Apichatpong Weerasethakul. A spoof of Thai movie musicals and melodramas of the 1960s and '70s (especially those of Petchara Chaowarat, Michael portrayed the title character, a transvestite Thai secret agent whose alter ego is a gay male 7-Eleven clerk. The film was screened at several festivals, including the Tokyo International Film Festival, the Berlin Film Festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival, as well as a limited commercial run in a Bangkok cinema and a DVD release in Thailand.
Nature and Society Sofitel So Bangkok is holding “Nature and Society”, a fashion and art exhibition, until the end of October. The opening night, on September 4th, saw designs by the four participating fashion brands paraded on the catwalk in the hotel ballroom for a specially invited audience. Taking part this year are Kamuilim Fine Art & Décor, Sarran, Saprang and Tawn C. Art installations will be displayed throughout the hotel, but will be predominantly showcased on the seventh floor and at the Park Lobby on the ninth floor.
