Personal Statement

DESIGN

by Phyllis Law

Being an ordinary architecture student is not what Phyllis wants to be, besides focusing on academics, she shows plenty of commitments in outside-studio activities such as competitions, workshops and design & built projects. Been a participant in Publikart workshop (installations by artist from various country) first gave her the exposure to design & build project and since then, she falls in love with it. Later on, chances are given to her to handle design & build projects and competitions. Although there is no credit given for her academic performance and despite of the tight academic schedules, she still shows full commitments on these.

“Everything is worth a try. It is tiring to handle both academics and outside-studio projects during the semester, but when you managed to do that, the satisfaction is inexplicable.” her reply to the questions. She takes up challenges which others doubt are impossible. Attitudes make the man. Leadership, discipline, willing to learn attitude and passion in her could be seen from her achievements in academics and outside-studio projects. “Why hands on project?” Hands on projects allow her to explore and experiment the characteristic of a material in depth, study the tectonics of every architecture elements. Experimenting & exploring is her direction in architecture which she wish to have a platform in Tsinghua University to join the world class architecture master programme.

EXPERIMENT W H A T I S A R C H I T E C T U R E?

Questions are thrown to her and doubting why does she still wants to take up these responsibilities when no credit will be given. Some think that her actions are not understandable.
