This gallery is the second project to receive a final certification from GBI under the RNC category and sixth project overall.

Sustainability

1. adapt to microclimate such as the sun path, wind path and noise

4

2. having cavity walls and 450mm depth sun shading devices at the west facade 3. cross ventilation is allowed across the gallery

2

4. bioswales to filter the surface water flowing back to the ground 5. regional materials (500km within the site) are used for this project-no imported materials are used 6. indirect natural lighting 7. Landscape which occupies 55.3% of the site area reduces urban heat island effect on its site

3

8. row of trees between the main road and gallery is remained to provide shades & absorb the noise from the main road 9. rebars and broken concrete blocks from the previous demolished buildings are reused. Legend: 1. Landscape ramp 2. Rebar railings from previously demolished buildings 3. alfresco dining area 4. i-beam supported onduline roof Prepared by Phyllis Law | Portfolio | page 9

serenity

as my main design intention. Designing a museum for Malaysia Chinese New Village, serene spaces are created to allow the visitors to have a calm mind to recall back the unforgettable Malaysia history, where Chinese are segregated by the British to the New Village during the Emergency Period to cope with communism which was very active at that period. Serene spaces are achieved by segregating the quite zone with water feature as shown in the masterplan. Treating the gallery as the hierarchy of the spaces, architectural elements are implemented where sustainability is taken into account. Inspired by traditional air conditioning concept, the columns in the gallery are transformed into exhibition, natural cooling and natural lighting elements.

the sketches above show my initial idea (left) and the developing idea of the natural air conditioning concept to be applied into the gallery (right). The final conceptual idea of this elements is illustrated at the following page. UCSI University | BSc {Hons} in Architecture | Semester 3
