Director’s Foreword – PICA’s August to December program offers you a wondrous journey through refractive landscapes, a world of ghosts and doppelgangers and postminimalist approaches to the nation’s on-going struggle with image, identity and environment. We’ll let you be guided too through sonic gestures and animated notations and allow you to experience football as theatre, choreographed crowd control and what it might feel like to be in the immigration “queue”. You’ll float and fawn, reflect and be reflected in a program of outstanding exhibitions, dance, theatre, music and interdisciplinary performance projects that just as equally require you to duck and dive, twist and turn - all in the name of art and in the pursuit of understanding the world a little better. Derek Kreckler Accident & Process – 29 August – 18 October Central Galleries Opening Night Friday 28 August, 6-8pm
Derek Kreckler: Accident & Process is the first survey exhibition of one of Australia’s most rigorous conceptual artists. It brings together photography, video, installation, sound and performance works drawn from the artist’s early experimental practice of the 1970s through to his more recent focus on still and moving imagery in the 21st century. The exhibition considers the relationship between culture and the environment, focusing on representations of landscape, national identity and the role of chance in determining these. In focusing on these themes, Accident & Process addresses notions that are of enduring importance to the artist, central to the evolution of Australia’s cultural history and which demonstrate Kreckler’s desire to explore, extrapolate and test our understanding of our physical, cultural and social surrounds. This exhibition will tour throughout Australia in 2016 and 2017. — Curated by Hannah Mathews

In the distance a pool of light was not what it seemed is an exhibition of new work created for PICA’s West End Gallery. Extending her drawing practice into three-dimensional forms, Sydney-based West Australian artist Consuelo Cavaniglia takes her latest works to a new scale, creating a landscape of pavilions for visitors to move through and around. The artist ruptures and folds reflective surfaces, colour fields and airbrushed edges to create illusions of depth. Cavaniglia combines her drawings, mirrors and structures to construct disorienting interiors with cinematic undertones, offering up new perceptual situations within space, time and architecture.

Featuring work by Australian and international artists, Dead Ringer seeks to draw forth the doppelgangers, ghosts and bad copies that haunt us. The exhibition unites an original group of artists whose works negotiate the extremes of portraiture through film, painting, photography, installation, 3D printing, hypnosis and transcendental meditation to identify the apparitions, simulations and doubles that have surfaced in recent dialogues about contemporary culture. This group show connects artists across artforms, cultures and time zones. Drawing on theories of quantum entanglement, parallel worlds, stolen identities and exact duplicates, Dead Ringer is about identity crisis in the post-internet age. — Curated by Leigh Robb

Anime is a concert dedicated to ‘Animated Notation’, an emerging form of music notation where graphic instructions are put into action through interactive computing, video and lighting. This concert features world premieres of works by composers pioneering this form, including Ingibjörg Friðriksdóttir (Iceland), Cat Hope (WA), Stuart James (WA), Ryan Ross Smith (USA), Lindsay Vickery (WA) and Felicity Wilcox (NSW) as well as the Australian premiere of a work by Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir (Iceland). The concert also features a new work by WA composer Jonathan Mustard, as part of Decibel’s ‘Difficult Commission’ project, in addition to a detailed sound design created by Johannes Mulder. Presenting the scores to the audience live throughout the concert, Anime will create an equally immersive experience for the performers and audience through combined sonic and visual languages. — Decibel is Cat Hope (director, flutes, bass, voice), Lindsay Vickery (reeds, electronics), Tristen Parr (cello), Aaron Wyatt (viola, programming), Stuart James (piano, percussion, electronics) & Louise Devenish (percussion).

Returning to PICA as part of a national Mobile States tour, former footballer Ahilan Ratnamohan performs SDS1, a thrilling dance-inspired work derived entirely from the physicality of ‘the beautiful game’. Exploring football (or soccer) as an art form, this physically charged performance has the audience living the surreal, visceral yet poetic experience of a football match. SDS1 ponders the psyche of the vulnerable warriors on the pitch striving to be loved and hated, worshipped and scorned, and through sheer athletic prowess, creates layers of movement that see the player ‘caught’ in the performance, rather than in control of it. CHOREOGRAPHY OF CROWD CONTROL The ability to express dissent in the public sphere is increasingly under threat from the privatisation of public space, the repression of protest, and a restrictive definition of legitimate democratic activity. All of this is cloaked and justified in the language of security, safety and consensus. Public circulation (keep moving) is a stylised, choreographic performance based on crowd control techniques. Created in consultation with people who have first hand experience of the regulating techniques used by police, security guards and public administrators, this new work features a team of security professionals that will occupy public spaces within PICA and the Perth Cultural Centre. In this playfully immersive performance, with elements of choreography and interaction, the audience is gently guided to the position of adjudicator…IF they make the grade. MEDITATIVE NEW MUSIC SOUNDSCAPES WA-based experimentors of sound, Decibel, will undertake a two-week residency with composer and clarinettist Carol Robinson (USA/FR) to develop a new work in the Occam Ocean series by Eliane Radigue (FR). This new work, Hexa II, has been commissioned by Decibel, written collaboratively by Radigue and Robinson, and will be developed and premiered on site in PICA’s acoustically cavernous Central Gallery. The Occam concert will also feature two other pieces by Radigue, all three an exploration of the interactions between sound, instrument, musician and acoustics. This will be a vastly different Decibel experience as expressive music made of minute and surprising pulsations fills the gallery and reaches into the listener’s psyche.

Anna Dunnill is a Perth-based artist whose practice involves drawing, embroidery and stick-and-poke tattooing while exploring the themes of communication, anxiety and human connection/isolation. During her residency she will investigate the performative possibilities of tattoo and embroidery, along with the unconventional narratives and modes of communication through these forms.
Nathan Brooker is an emerging Western Australian artist and Hatched alumni. Nathan continues to develop his painting practice and explores the themes of transitional environments and how objects accumulate around a mediator. He extends his understanding by continuing his research in 19 th and 20 th century artistic theory and method.

Following on from his latest video project and self-published book, film maker and visual artist Peter Cheng will be developing an extension of his arts documentary project entitled Perth Artists. Peter’s practice engages with established and emerging artists working from Perth, Western Australia and opens a discourse surrounding art practice, approach, means and context. Pony Express is led by playwright and performance maker, Ian Sinclair, and interdisciplinary artist Loren Kronemyer. Working across interactive performance, media and transdisciplinary art, Pony Express create work that invites people to physically, mentally, and emotionally submit to the environment. This residency will develop a new installationbased solo dance work by Perth choreographer Rachel Arianne Ogle, in collaboration with esteemed design team Benjamin Cisterne (visual design) and Luke Smiles / motion laboratories (composer). Focusing on the development of collaborative practice, this team will research how design elements directly inform choreography in the early stages of the process, and vice versa. Continuing Ogle’s fascination with our interconnectedness to the universe, the work will explore cosmic, physical and emotional landscapes of a surreal world. This project is part of a Seed Residency through STRUT Dance. –

Demons is an epic multidisciplinary theatre work based on Dostoyesky’s novel Demons. Written and directed by Humphrey Bower, Demons is about a group of young ‘nihilists’ and their tangled relationships with each other as well as their parents, teachers, mentors, lovers and the authorities. GETTING HERE PICA is easily accessed via public transport and by car. There is a pedestrian overpass from the Perth train station and PICA is a two minute walk away. Transperth’s free Blue CAT buses also provide the closest pick-up and drop-off points for PICA located on Beaufort St. General & ACROD car parking is available within the Perth Cultural Centre precinct. The closest ACROD accessible carparks with lift access to the Cultural Centre are the Cultural Centre car park, State Library car park and Citiplace car park.
