HyperPrometheus The Legacy of Frankenstein 20 October – 23 December

HyperPrometheus commemorates the 200th anniversary of the publishing of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus (1818). Considered by some to be the first science fiction novel, Frankenstein is both a celebration and warning of the seductive powers and unforeseen outcomes of scientific advancement. Featuring Australian and international artists, HyperPrometheus re-contextualises Frankenstein for the new millennium within the realms of contemporary and biological arts. It focuses on what Frankenstein means today in relation to the intersection of the living and the non-living, artifice and nature, reproductive and biomedical technologies and other scientific and technological practices of our age.

Artists: AES+F, Tarsh Bates, Erich Berger and Mari Keto, Erin Coates, Thomas Feuerstein, Hayden Fowler, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Heather Dewey-Hagborg and Chelsea E. Manning, Sam Jinks, Olga Kisseleva, Daniel Lee, Kira O’Reilly, ORLAN, Nina Sellars, Justin Shoulder, Stelarc, Lu Yang. Curated by Oron Catts, Laetitia Wilson and Eugenio Viola HyperPrometheus is part of SymbioticA’s Unhallowed Arts event series Presented in partnership with SymbioticA, The University of Western Australia (UWA)

The selected artworks tackle the creation and assemblage of life and death, the reanimation of the non-living, future life, synthetic biology and the technological non-human.

Performance

Confusion for Three Jo Lloyd 15 – 17 November | 7.30pm “Electrifying... Jo’s choreography is a gift to watch.” Planet Arts WA PREMIERE Unleash the confusion. From celebrated Australian choreographer Jo Lloyd, Confusion for Three is a thrilling dance encounter with explosive physicality. Each performance is entirely original, with music mixed live. A tour de force performance that asks whether confusion is the only certainty. Hypnotic tension is generated by three dancers as they negotiate a progressively unravelling system of choreography. Navigating their physical histories – from traces of folk dance to idiosyncratic body rhythms – the performers reveal a series of desperate encounters, in a destabilising flood of movement. The question remains: can this confusion be sustained, and where does it lead us? Presented by PICA and STRUT Dance
