TIME WELL SPENT: Our practice

managers want to help you make the most of your next trip to the doctor.

L

et’s be honest: nobody really looks forward to going to the doctor. Taking time off work can be a hassle, and an aversion to waiting rooms and hospital gowns can make you want to put off scheduling an appointment. To help make sure that your next visit goes as smoothly and painlessly as possible, we asked our practice managers to pass along some of their best patient tips: 

Need to be seen immediately? If you’re seeking a same-day appointment, it’s best to call your doctor’s office within the first hours after opening. Once they have had time to process cancellations they received overnight, the person who answers your call will know what time slots have become available. Another option is to visit an urgent care or express care facility, where no appointment is required. You can even use InQuickER (PMCinquicker.com) to check-in online and avoid sitting in the waiting room for too long.

EMERGENCY ROOM or URGENT CARE

CHECK-IN

ONLINE

AND SKIP THE WAITING ROOM

If you’re taking time away from work or other obligations, your top priority may be getting through your visit as quickly and efficiently as possible. Our practice managers work hard to ensure that patients receive excellent care in a timely manner, but some patients end up having needs that require more of the Physician’s time and attention than they can anticipate. Unfortunately, this can cause delays for other appointments throughout the day. Though we do everything we can to stay on track while still providing our patients with exceptional care, please understand that days in a medical office are often unpredictable. 

To increase your chances of being seen quickly, aim for taking one of the first couple of appointments in a day or the one right after lunch. You can also let the receptionist and your nurse know up front if you are on a tight schedule. The receptionist should have an idea of how the schedule looks for the day, and may be able to advise you about how long you can plan to be there. If you discover that your appointment is going to take longer than you have time for, consider rescheduling for another date. 

We value our patients’ opinions, and would ask that if you have any comments, concerns or suggestions for a facility you’ve visited, please contact the practice manager of that office directly. All of our practice managers are committed to providing quality medical care while maintaining a high level of customer service and patient satisfaction. A message from Bill Masterton President and Chief Executive Officer

L

ooking back at 2013, it was a paramount year for us here at Piedmont Medical Center, with notable achievements in awardwinning medical services and community outreach. I’m excited about the momentum with which we’ve started the new year here at Piedmont and am very optimistic that 2014 will prove to be just as monumental.

to celebrating the opening of our new Emergency Department that is even bigger and better equipped to handle the needs of the growing community we have the pleasure of serving. We had a very successful year as we focused on meeting a tremendous need in this community by recruiting more primary care physicians to the area. We opened a new urgent care center on Sutton Road in Fort Mill, placed a fantastic husband-and-wife team of physicians Drs. Pratik and Saumya Mehta at Piedmont Family Practice at Baxter Village and continue to build our PMC Physician Network throughout our service area.

On December 3rd, we held our groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of our Emergency Department, and were grateful for the presence and support of our state and local elected officials and community leaders, as well as many of our neighbors here in Rock Hill. Construction commenced that afternoon, and was well underway by the beginning of the new year. We look forward

Piedmont Medical Center EMS and Safe Kids York County partner to help prevent accidental injury.

W

e are proud to announce that in February, Piedmont Medical Center EMS will be nationally recognized for winning the 12th Annual Nicholas Rosecrans Award for demonstrating leadership, commitment, and innovation in preventing injuries through Safe Kids York County. Safe Kids is a local non-profit organization led by PMC EMS and made up entirely of community volunteers. In 2013, they held over 450 child safety seat checks, 200 events and helped to provide over 50 donated car seats to families in need or those who had unsafe seats. These are just a few of the achievements that they’ve accomplished in the last year, and we are thrilled that they are being nationally recognized for their efforts to help keep our children safe.

Honoring Piedmont Medical Center’s retired nurses and employees.

O

n Monday, December 16th, we honored two long-standing members of the Piedmont Medical Center family as they embark on their journey into retirement! Debbie Bartle worked in the Laboratory for more than 44 years, and Martha Padgett served over 45 years in the Surgery Center. Bill Masterton, our CEO, spoke at the celebration, expressing our deep appreciation for their dedicated years of service to our hospital. Both ladies entertained their family members, friends and PMC colleagues

with special memories from their time here over the years. They each remember the day when they helped with moving the hospital from the old location on Ebenezer Road at York General Hospital to our current campus on Herlong Avenue – almost 31 years ago!

Piedmont’s President and CEO Bill Masterton congratulates long-time hospital employees, Martha Padgett (left) and Debbie Bartle, on their retirement and thanks them for their dedication and service.

Martha surprised the group with an amazing collection of old newspapers, magazines and scrapbooks that she kept through the years! Thank you, ladies, for all you have done, and congratulations on your retirement! 3

REINDEER ROMP BOASTS RECORD PARTICIPATION

P

iedmont was proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the 6th Annual Reindeer Romp 5K on December 7, 2013. Each year we partner with Girls on the Run Tri-County to host the race as a part of ChristmasVille, held in Old Town Rock Hill. This year’s event was met with some less-than-ideal weather, but that didn’t stop runners from coming out in droves to race! Our largest crowd ever of over 1,500 runners of all ages filled Main Street, Rock Hill, donning their reindeer antlers, all while their families and friends cheered them on. A big “thank you” to everyone who helps make this event possible year after year.

From Patient to Advocate: Sheila Caldwell’s Journey to the Heart2Heart Foundation

W

hen Sheila Caldwell had a heart attack on May 30th, 2012, she was only 50 years old. Her family has a history of heart disease; her father had his first heart attack at the age of 42, and a heart transplant at 51. “My family joked that I was lucky to have made it to 50 before I had my first one,” she says. Sheila realized very quickly that there was a disparity for heart disease education in York County when she was unable to find a local organization that could help her raise awareness by sharing her story. Having lived in York County for 20 years, she felt very passionate about making resources available to help educate local women on how to prevent heart disease. Through her own cardiac rehabilitation, Sheila got to know Deb King, RN, Clinical Coordinator of Cardiac Rehabilitation at PMC, and together they formed the Heart2Heart Foundation. Though the all-volunteer foundation is only one year young, they have already established regular Lunch-and-Learn programs with physicians as guest speakers, and partnered with Piedmont to offer screenings at local businesses and health fairs. They have also been very active in promoting the monthly health risk assessments at the hospital and provide scholarships for those with limited resources. Heart2Heart has been busy with other special events to raise awareness – including coordinating its first-ever Old Town Zombie Crawl 5K race in Rock Hill this past October. Over 200 runners participated, many of them getting “zombie-fied” before the race in ghoulish make-up and tattered attire, making for one scarily fun event that raised awareness for the organization in a big way. Continuing that momentum, Heart2Heart has been invited to travel to Columbia in February, where Governor Nikki Haley will sign a special proclamation in honor of Heart Month and to help the Foundation bring attention to the heart health issue in our state.

For American Heart Month in February, Heart2Heart will be holding their second annual Heart Gala, “Celebrate With Heart.” The event is a semi-formal red dress/ red tie event that brings the community together to support their cause and raises money for the foundation. Last year’s event had approximately 100 attendees and was able to fund educational materials for community events in 2013 and provide 30 Heart Health Risk Assessment Screening scholarships to women at high-risk of developing heart disease. In 2014, Heart2Heart hopes to provide at least 10 of these scholarships per month, and add a special children's curriculum about heart health to their educational materials. This year’s Heart Gala will be held on February 15th at the City Club of Rock Hill from 6 pm to 10 pm. Early bird tickets are $50 each through February 1st. Attire is semi-formal.

MENDED HEARTS GROUP PROVIDES CARE AND SUPPORT TO RECOVERING CARDIAC PATIENTS

I

f you or a loved one has ever experienced a cardiac event, you know that the entire experience, including recovery and life after hospitalization can be overwhelming. You go home with plenty of instructions from your doctor, but there are still so many questions. How will I feel? Will recovery be difficult? How much will my life change? What should I expect? Will I ever get back to feeling normal? The dedicated volunteers of Mended Hearts work to help cardiac patients understand the answers to these questions. They offer support to patients and their families during the transition back to everyday life and recovery. Mended Hearts is a national non-profit organization with more than 300 local chapters and satellites across the country. Piedmont is proud to be a partner and the host site for Rock Hill’s chapter #289.

to place AEDs (automated external defibrillator) in various locations in the area. The group has also sponsored the development of other Mended Hearts chapters in the region.

Chapter #289 is currently 37 members strong and made up of a vibrant bunch who have a true compassion for others and a real spirit of service. Being a part of the organization not only allows the volunteers to help others, but it helps them personally as well. “It’s not just for the patients; it’s for you too, to help you get better,” says Don Cahill, Treasurer and Mended Hearts member for nine years. “It’s support. It’s rehab. We have speakers at meetings for education, and there is camaraderie between all of us that have been through similar situations. All of this helps you stay on the road to recovery.”

Joe Ogrinc is the incoming president of the Rock Hill chapter, taking the reins from outgoing president Don Moe. Joe became a member of Mended Hearts six years ago after he had a stent put in. He personally visits with patients several hours each week. “It’s about realizing how lucky I am to be alive, and remembering that every day is a gift,” he says, reflecting on his experience with the organization.

One of the local chapter’s initiatives is a unique peer-to-peer visiting program, where trained volunteers visit with patients in the Heart & Vascular Center. They provide moral and practical support, helping them understand what it will be like once they leave the hospital. In addition to these regular visits, Mended Hearts also holds regular support group meetings and educational opportunities to help cardiac patients continue their ongoing recovery and stay healthy. They make a conscious effort to impact the community by providing nursing scholarships and working
