Once transition to the new space is completed, we will begin the renovation of the current ER. Our goal is to have the completely new ER open in November of 2014.
PMC is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the state. We are committed to continuing to offer this expanding community with the very best in high quality, compassionate healthcare right here in your own backyard. I appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you services both to treat you and keep you well.

One of the initiatives that I began when I started at the hospital in 2012 was a series of Semi-Annual Employee Forums. These meetings are for employees of Piedmont Medical Center to ask questions and make suggestions about a variety of topics related to the hospital. I also use these meetings as an opportunity to provide an update of past discussion items and any future plans as we continue to fulfill on our Mission: “To deliver exceptional healthcare to every person we have the privilege to serve.” This summer’s semi-annual report covered several key updates related to the hospital including:
RENOVATION OF THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT: We are pleased to announce that we have plans to begin renovation in September that will double the size of our current ER from 21,000 square feet to 42,000 square feet. This renovation will occur in phases. We will add parking

have noticed increased visibility of the hospital via billboards, print ads, local cable ads, and presence on social media. This was the direct result of the first series of Semi-Annual Employee Forums I hosted in 2012 where employees shared that they believed we could do a better job of telling the story to the public of all of the quality awards we have received. We have made a lot of changes in our marketing strategy (including this community newsletter) and are excited to keep you informed as to what is going on at Piedmont! Be sure to ‘like’ us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter if you haven’t already.
RECENT AWARDS AND DESIGNATIONS: We are proud to
be the recipient of several quality awards and designations thus far in this calendar year, including the 2013 South Carolina Distinguished Hospital of the Year by the State Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), the 2013 American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association Get with the Guidelines® Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and Stroke Gold Quality Achievement Award, BCBS Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care and designation as an AAGL Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG) site.

P
iedmont Pride is more than the pride we feel for our hospital. It’s a commitment to provide the very best care and service to every person we have the privilege to serve. We are proud to be your community hospital, where we are large enough to serve you, yet small enough to know you as an individual. Our Piedmont Pride Committee consists of energetic, enthusiastic employees who volunteer their time to increase awareness within the hospital of all the wonderful things happening here and to help distribute that knowledge to the larger community. One responsibility of the Piedmont Pride Committee is to manage the monthly PMC Service Excellence Awards. Employees are nominated for these awards by patients and their families or fellow employees. On a monthly basis one person is selected as the Employee of the Month. We also honor one outstanding Nurse with the Daisy Award each month. Quarterly awards are distributed also for Leader of the Quarter and Physician of the Quarter.

One of the goals of the Affordable Care Act is for hospitals to begin implementing Electronic Medical Records systems.
T
o comply with this requirement, Piedmont has taken steps to Improve Patient Care Through Technology (IMPACT) by enhancing our new electronic medical records system, CERNER. The application of this new system will allow us to streamline our process for patient care and more efficiently manage patient information. Though the conversion to this system is in the early stages, by the end of September patients will be able to benefit from a new online patient portal. 3

id you know that walking has the lowest dropout rate of any kind of physical activity? It is a very accessible form of exercise especially in our area where parks and walking trails such as the Piedmont Medical Center Trail at the Rock Hill Outdoor Center located at Riverwalk, are readily accessible. Walking has many benefits: • Helps reduce risk for coronary heart disease • Regulates stress and boost overall energy • Improves blood pressure and blood sugar levels • Helps maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity • And much more!
We are thrilled to partner with “Walk with a Doc,” a non-profit organization that strives to help the community take steps to better their health. This program is held once a month at the Piedmont Medical Center Trail at Riverwalk for a walk with a featured physician and is a great opportunity to ask questions Elizabeth Zimmerman, MD about your health and enjoy the camaraderie of others in your community! Dr. Elizabeth Zimmerman, a Family Practice Physician in York, SC led our inaugural walk on September 14th. Join us for Walk with a Doc the second Saturday of the month at 8 am. First time registers will receive a free t-shirt and pedometer.
Registration is FREE. Call 803-329-1234 and choose option 2 or online at myPMC.com/events to register.

When Trina Perry’s lower back and knees began giving her problems, she became concerned about her health.
W
hen faced with joint and back pain and high blood pressure, Trina Perry knew that something had to change. She decided that the best tool for her weight loss would be bariatric surgery and in December 2011, she opted for weight loss surgery with one of our skilled surgeons at Piedmont Medical Center. In the first few months after her bariatric surgery, she had to learn to adjust to eating smaller portions of food but over time and with assistance from her doctor, she was able to make the new diet work for her. Trina began exercising more and a year and a half later, she says that her cholesterol and blood pressure have improved. Earlier this year she even completed her first 5K and is hoping to participate in many more in the future. “I walked it,” she says. “But it was the first time I’ve ever even considered doing anything like that!” If you’re considering weight loss surgery, you may benefit from attending one of our free, informational seminars. Held twice a month, the seminars provide potential patients with an overview of the surgical weight loss journey. They learn about the health benefits, risks, and patient stories, as well as what to expect before, during and following bariatric surgery.
To sign up for our next seminar, visit pmcsurgicalweightloss.com or call 803-329-1234 and choose option 2.

FORT MILL MEDICAL CENTER INFORMATION AND THE CERTIFICATE OF NEED APPLICATION
T
here has been a lot of discussion in the news in recent months about our Certificate of Need (CON) application to build a hospital in Fort Mill. The Administrative Law Judge heard the appeal in April and early May in Columbia, and we were appreciative of the opportunity to tell our story. We expect to be notified about the judge’s decision in early October. Of course, there has also been a lot of news coverage about the Governor’s decision to veto the funding provided to DHEC that allows them to administer the CON program. As we understand it, this will not affect the Fort Mill Medical Center decision, but we continue to remain well informed about the issue as it relates to pending and future CON applications.
