A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHIEF OF STAFF: I have the opportunity to practice cutting-edge medicine in a setting that feels like family.
Piedmont Medical Center’s Chief of Staff, Dr. Vasant Patel, is a practicing interventional cardiologist who completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and his fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He and his family settled in Rock Hill 12 years ago after deciding they wanted to live in a small community where he could more closely relate to his patients. We spoke with him about Piedmont Medical Center and the doctors that choose to work here. “We have a very compassionate CEO that is physician-friendly and prioritizes a patient-centric approach to care,” said Dr. Patel. He cited the passion of Piedmont’s physicians: “Community means a lot to me and the PMC medical staff, because we are also a part of this community.” Dr. Patel’s two children were born at Piedmont, and he appreciates the rapport that doctors are able to build with patients in York County. “Our patients are not just patients; they’re also our neighbors and friends.” When asked about his favorite part of working at Piedmont, he again cited the relationships. “I have the opportunity to practice cutting-edge medicine in a setting that feels like family,” he said. “The support of all the hospital employees makes Piedmont a great place to practice.” Dr. Patel also noted how unusual it is to have such a wide variety of specialties represented in a local hospital like Piedmont. “Over the years, many physicians have come to Rock Hill and helped us to add more services to a hospital serving a growing population,” he said. “They’ve noticed the expansion of medical services and the opportunity to contribute to a growing population.” He added that many of the physicians at Piedmont have trained at large institutions in big cities, but prefer to work in the community of Rock Hill where they can spend time developing relationships with their patients. “It really gives meaning to a phrase that we often use at Piedmont, ‘We are small enough to know you, but large enough to serve you.’” We would like to thank Dr. Patel for speaking with us, and all of the Piedmont Medical Center and PMC Physician Network physicians who have assumed the responsibility of providing healthcare to the York County community. We feel honored to have you as expert partners in our health!

A message from Bill Masterton Chief Executive Officer
I
t is hard to believe that I will celebrate two years with Piedmont Medical Center this summer. The progress we have made is substantial, and I am privileged and honored to be the CEO of our community’s hospital. Over the past two years, we have more than doubled our primary care network, made significant increases to our nursing staff, and have a wonderful team of administrators in place. It is refreshing to see the ideas and perspectives bubbling up from PMC’s talented staff. This organic creativity and passion are the perfect recipe for PMC’s continued growth. I truly believe, “if you haven’t been to Piedmont Medical Center lately, you haven’t been to Piedmont.” This has been an exciting spring, filled with recognition of our incredible staff as we celebrated National Doctor’s Day (March 30), Nurses’ Week (May 6-12), Hospital Week (May 11-17), and EMS Week (May 18-24), just to name a few. It was a pleasure to be able to take the time to stop and celebrate our entire hospital family and the outstanding work they do on a daily basis in caring for our patients.
I am most proud to announce that we were once again recognized by The Leapfrog Group with a HOSPITAL Hospital Safety Score grade of “A” PIEDMONT MEDICAL CENTER SAFETY SCORE (www.hospitalsafetyscore.org). The Leapfrog Group is one of the nation’s leading patient safety advocacy organizations. This grading system, in which an

Patient safety is a top priority for us, and this designation recognizes our commitment to providing exceptional healthcare to our patients. I’d like to thank every member of our Piedmont team that helped us make the grade…again! We are also making great progress on the expansion of our Emergency Department. Phase I of the project is nearing completion, and we will begin seeing patients in the newly constructed ER at the beginning of July. At that point, Phase II of the construction will begin to renovate the existing section of the Emergency Department. When the entire expansion is completed later this year, we will have PHASE I doubled the size of our PROGRESS ER – with total care spaces increasing from 34 to 60, including areas for fast tracking of care. I am looking forward to celebrating the completion of this project and the benefits that it will EXPANSION PHASES provide our patients and the community. PHASE I

Recognizing Piedmont’s employees for outstanding care.
Dear Sir/Madam: I just wanted to let you know about an encounter I had with one of your employees. In January, I had visited my brother-in-law and then was going to see my neighbor. When I got to the floor my neighbor was on, the arthritis in my hip began hurting from having to walk so far. A nurse on the fourth floor offered me a wheelchair that was there and available. She had me sit down in the chair and proceeded to take me to my neighbor's room. She told me just to call Guest Services when I was ready to go and someone would come and get me. An employee in your department by the name of "Tarrele" who has been there 13 years and said he hoped to make another 13, came to my aid. He took me down to the parking lot outside the Women's Center. If that was not enough, he then walked me across the street to my car. I was impressed and grateful for his help. He went above and beyond what he needed to do that day. But, I feel like that is what many of his days are.

W
e’re thrilled to announce that Piedmont Medical Center has achieved Excellence Recognition from Working Well and Prevention Partners for best practices in employee wellness. We received the recognition for implementing policies, programs and benefits that promote a culture of wellness and help employees remain tobacco-free, stay physically active and make healthy eating decisions. Initiatives that have guided us toward these goals include: our smoking cessation program; on-site exercise classes; health screenings; healthy cooking demonstrations; and prominent nutrition information in our café.
Dhwani Mehta and Don Currier receiving Excellence Recognition from Working Well and Prevention Partners.
Community wellness is one of our top priorities, and we know that starts with a strong commitment to support employee health. We look forward to the continued development of in-house programs that allow us to integrate wellness into our day-to-day operations.
Piedmont is the first in the Charlotte region to offer injectable heart monitor.
W
e are proud to have been the first hospital in the Charlotte region to implant the Medtronic Reveal LINQ Insertable Cardiac Monitor (ICM) System in a patient, the smallest implantable cardiac monitoring device available. This new device is very tiny – approximately one-third the size of a AAA-battery. The Reveal LINQ ICM allows physicians to continuously and wirelessly monitor a patient’s heart for up to three years. Patients who experience symptoms, such as irregular heartbeats, fainting spells or an unexplained stroke, can Reveal LINQ monitor – courtesy of Medtronic
be candidates for the monitor. It’s a quick, simple, minimally invasive procedure – only requiring local anesthesia – where the monitor is inserted underneath the skin just above the heart. The system allows data recorded by the monitor to be reported through global cellular technology from nearly any location in the world, so that the physician can be alerted if the patient experiences a cardiac event. This capability and the length of time that data can be recorded on a patient can greatly help cardiologists in diagnosing a patient and therefore help them care for the patient more effectively. Dr. Sushil Singhi, Interventional Cardiologist on our medical staff here at PMC, implanted the first of these monitors in one of his patients on May 8. “This is a remarkable advancement and innovation in the technology to improve patient care,” Dr. Singhi said.
Welcoming our New EMS Director
I
n May, we welcomed Michael Wallace into our PMC family as our new Director of Emergency Medical Services! Michael comes to Piedmont from Franklin, Tennessee, and brings more than 27 years of experience to the job. He has a degree in emergency health services and EMS management from George Washington University and began his career as an EMT at the age of 19. He is the founder of the non-profit RightDose Foundation, a group that works to help emergency medical care providers avoid medication errors.
6
Michael is committed to being an active director, not managing EMS from behind a desk. "The only way I can lead is to be deeply involved in what we are doing," he said. He is prepared to help out on calls whenever he can and work alongside his Michael Wallace, BSHS, NRP staff to care for patients. We are so glad to have Michael as a part of our PMC team and Photo Credit: The Herald look forward to the great work he will do leading our EMS!

Your blood donation can save three local lives. Help save a life by becoming a blood donor today.
I
n the time it takes you to read this sentence, at least two patients will need blood. Approximately one in seven people being treated in the hospital setting need blood for their treatment. This year, 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion. Blood donation is essential in the world of healthcare, as blood is not something that can be produced in a laboratory – it has to be donated. Hospitals and other medical facilities across the country rely on local blood banks for units of blood used in transfusions, surgeries and countless other procedures. Blood banks, in turn, rely on blood donations by people in the community to keep their supply up in order to handle the ever-growing need by hospitals. As you might imagine, this is not an easy task; more often than not, blood banks experience a shortage situation.
and inconvenience for the donor can mean a second chance at life for someone in need of blood.
Facts you may not know about blood donation: A single blood donation can save three local lives. Whole
One of our own Piedmont team members, EMT Shannon Mackey, understands this first-hand. She found herself in critical need of blood when she discovered she had a large stomach ulcer that had begun to bleed. Thanks in part to the two units of blood she received, she was able to make a full recovery and get back to being a busy mom of three and saving lives with EMS. “I truly feel that without the generous people who take the time out of their busy lives to donate, I would not be here today,” said Shannon. “It gives me a whole new outlook on life!”
blood is separated into three individual components – platelets, red cells and plasma – all of which are used for various types of medical treatment for patients. More than 400 blood products are needed every day to help cancer, cardiovascular, trauma and transplant patients being treated in one of our area hospitals. 37% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but only 5% do. If all blood donors gave three times a year, it would help prevent blood shortages. (Statistics: Community Blood Center of the Carolinas http://cbcc.us/about/media-center-blood-donation-statistics.php)
With all this information – why don’t more people give blood? Many people are nervous about the process – the time it takes, fear of needles, potentially feeling weak after donating, all of which is understandable. However, the temporary discomfort
“Blood is not something that can be created in a lab – it’s only produced in the human body. That’s why it is so critical for people to donate blood,” said Robert White, EMS Community Relations Coordinator and member of the PMC Blood Drive Committee. “So many lives depend on these donations – and every drop stays in our area to save local lives of our family, friends and neighbors.”
Piedmont’s blood partner, Community Blood Center of the Carolinas, hosts regular drives throughout our community – including drives on-site at the hospital!

Hands-Only™ CPR Training
T
he City of Rock Hill and Piedmont Medical Center’s EMS have received a grant from the American Heart Association and Cities of Service to help residents learn Hands-Only™ CPR. Rock Hill was one of five cities chosen across the nation to be awarded the grant, and will receive 500 CPR training kits to teach over 3,000 residents, with the help of volunteers throughout Rock Hill. The grant also supports the implementation of a special, high-impact service strategy for teaching the life-saving Hands-Only™ CPR technique, in which medical professionals (like Piedmont EMS) teach volunteers, and those volunteers go on to teach five more people, and so on and so on. This is the second year that the grant has been offered through AHA and Cities of Service, a bipartisan coalition of mayors from across the nation who aim to address critical city needs through impact volunteering. According to Cities of Service, close to 400,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the United States, and 89 percent of those Americans die because they don’t receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene. When performed properly, hand compressions can more than double a person’s chance of survival.

We are excited to partner with the City of Rock Hill to provide this training to anyone who wants to learn this life-saving technique. For more information on participating, contact Robert White, EMS Community Relations Coordinator, at robertd.white@tenethealth.com.
