Exploring the

NORTH & SOUTH

REGIONS

Stunning view of Mount Rainier as captured from the banks of North Lake Tapps County Park in the North Region

South Region Gateway to the Great Outdoors and Mount Rainier

The South Region of Pierce County Parks is the largest and fastest growing area in the County. Approximately 25% of the growth in our County has taken place in this region over the last few years and that trend shows no signs of slowing down. The South Region encompasses South Hill Puyallup, Graham and all the way out to Ashford Community Park. A diverse array of parks and facilities await county residents to satisfy their need for indoor and outdoor adventure. These include trails, first class athletic fields, playgrounds, picnic shelters, off leash dog area, a variety of rental venues for groups large and small and a new Park scheduled to open in the summer of 2020. We're looking forward to the opening of Stan & Joan Cross Park later this summer. This park will provide much needed facilities and programs to the Fredrickson area. The property on which the park is being constructed has a great deal of historical significance. It was originally homesteaded in the 1850's. After passing through several owners the property was converted to a working Dairy Farm in the early 1900’s. Mayflower Dairy began operation around 1903 and remained operational until the mid 1950’s. Fast forward to 1973, the year Stan and Joan purchased the property. They began raising beef cattle on the property and at one point had over sixty head in their herd.

9

Pierce County purchased the Cross property in 2003 with the idea that it would one day become “Stan & Joan Cross Park”. Planning began in earnest shortly thereafter with the help of a local organization formed specifically for that purpose. The “Friends of Stan & Joan Cross Park" conducted regular meetings, performed public outreach and fundraising and provided valuable information and insight to the design process. From the beginning, the focal point of the park design was to retain its historical character and architecture.

Over the years the dairy and hay barn on the property became a favorite spot for locals to take photographs and reminisce about this wellknown landmark. The design and architecture of the Park attempt to maintain the rustic look of the farm and dairy to keep its heritage alive.

Synthetic turf fields at Heritage Recreation Center.

| Spring/Summer 2020 | www.piercecountywa.gov/parks

The South Region is also home to Heritage Recreation Center, one of the premier athletic complexes in the state. Every year thousands of games are played on its softball, baseball and soccer fields by competitors of all ages. If you’re looking for something a little less active, the Nathan Chapman Trail connects Heritage and South Hill Community Parks. The trail is a favorite of locals for its scenic beauty and majestic forest landscape. Watch closely and you might even see wildlife such as deer, rabbits, racoons or an occasional bird of prey.

PierceCountyParks

Frontier Park, located in Graham, is one of the busiest parks in our system. The park plays host to the annual Pierce County Fair. The Fair is looking forward to its 75th year of operation in 2020. Children and adults of all ages will enjoy the carnival rides, exhibits, competitions, and displays that the Fair has become known for. Frontier Park is also the location of several other events throughout the year including The Tacoma Highland Games and Classic Car Shows. Exploring the trails at Frontier Park Pierce County Fair, Frontier Park | August 6 - 9 www.piercecountyfair.com Tacoma Highland Games at Frontier Park www.tacomahighlandgames.org

Another option for enjoying a serene park experience is Meridian Habitat Park. Once a well-kept secret, it has become popular due to its adventure playground, off-leash dog area, great lawn and natural amphitheater which plays host to Movies In The Park during the summer. Meridian Park is also home to the Meridian Center. This former Church now serves as a program site for various recreation classes, activities and events. The location is also available as a rental venue that can accommodate nearly 300 people for your private event.

Frontier Park boasts three rentable picnic shelters, children’s playground, public horse arena, great lawn, quarter midget race track, and lodge building. The Lodge is used for recreation classes and activities and can also be rented by private groups for parties and events.

Ashford Park is the newest addition to the South Region. Opened in 2010 it is beautifully nested in a mature conifer forest and provides patrons with a true nature experience. As its name states, the park is located in the community of Ashford, just a short distance from the entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park. Park amenities include a children’s playground, walking trails, great lawn and a natural amphitheater. Keep your eyes open for other frequent visitors such as elk, deer, rabbits and birds of prey. All in all, the South Region has a little something for everyone. Visit the South Region and discover your Everyday Adventures.

North Region An Escape to Lakes and Trails The North Region has a lot to offer when the weather gets warm. Let me introduce myself, my name is Kyle Wintermute, Parks and Recreation Manager for the North Regional Parks. I’ve been with Pierce County Parks now for 13 years and can’t say enough good things about our programs, parks and people that serve this incredible community! If you live outside of the Puyallup, Orting area or between Bonney Lake and Buckley then get on over here and see what you’ve been missing. Nestled just north of Bonney Lake and the White River is Lake Tapps, best known for it’s clear blue waters. You'll find some of the most pristine views of Mount Rainier in the region (see featured image on page 1). Laze by the waters egde, enjoy a family picnic or catch the big one at this fisherman's paradise. The park's open to everyone, seven-days a week 365-days a year, and even has a public boat launch.Whether you’re a sunbather, paddle boarder, innertuber, kayaker, fisherman or use water-wings you'll love Lake Tapps!

Need space, too much crowding and traffic? I get it, everybody needs a little time away, so go where nobody knows your name. The Foothills trail is 21 miles of get out of your head and in touch with nature, fresh air and space…lots of space. You can start out at the east Puyallup trailhead and travel all the way to Buckley in one shot. If that’s too much time to get out of your head then start at any one of our trailheads at McMillin, Orting, South Prairie or Buckley then choose a direction and leave your worries behind you. The Foothills trail is open to bicycles, scooters, walkers, runners, unicyclists, horses, strollers…well you get the point. The most important thing to remember is to share the space and be courteous so that others can enjoy their experience. Bet you didn’t know there is a regulation BMX track, disc golf course and boat slide all in one Park in Sumner, or did you? In just a very short distance you can trek on down to Riverside Park in Sumner to try your hand at disc golf, that is, as long as you have your own discs.

| Spring/Summer 2020 | www.piercecountywa.gov/parks

Also, if you’re an avid flat bottom boat river enthusiast and looking for a place to launch, we’ve got the perfect spot. The Riverside Boat Slide is a hand launch system for flat bottom boats, kayaks, or other boats that need some additional assistance getting in and out of the Puyallup River. Get more information and safety guidelines from our website. Lastly, if you’re looking for a place to compete in BMX racing contact http://www.rivervalleybmxracing.com/ to find out more about racing at Riverside Park. Hopefully, I've inspired you to get out and enjoy the North Region of your Pierce County Parks system. I’ll see you in the Parks!

DAWSON PLAYFIELD Closure during playground upgrades, paved loop trail and junior hoops addition.

• We’re building a pocket beach! This rocky shoreline will provide habitat for underwater critters and water access for beachgoers. • We’re replacing a blackberry “forest” with native plantings, making room for a new trail which ends in a Mt. Rainier viewpoint. • We’re replacing a restroom. • We’re improving the fishing pier, providing guide piles to protect it during bad weather. • We’re extending the boat ramps to help the Sheriff conduct low-water rescues. • We’re improving the bulkhead, to reduce erosion and preserve our park.
