The art of Daniel Buren situates itself within the encounter of new places; in so doing, it satisfies a perpetual desire for renewal. Around one hundred of his works created in situ have been circulated throughout the world. In 2007, the Lisson Gallery spaces in London became the theatrical centre of these new experiments. During his time there, Daniel Buren conceived of great architecture through custom-built pieces. The photographs and artist’s words illustrate the two weeks of his creative process at the gallery: from preparatory drawings to the positioning of volumes, colours and stripes.

This collection dedicated to artists’ studios, unveiled in a quasi-journalist manner, portrays the essence of the space of creation. The day-to-day life of these artists is documented through photographs and conversations in order to render their thought process and the studio atmosphere, from the most conventional to the most unpredictable elements.

Près d’une centaine de ses travaux réalisés in situ ont été disséminés dans le monde. En 2007, les espaces de la Lisson Gallery, à Londres, ont été le théâtre de nouvelles expérimentations. or over forty years, Daniel Buren has been creating within and for the exhibition space, without feeling the need of experimenting and conceiving his pieces within a protected studio environment. In the 1990s, the early artwork-object began to evolve towards more ambitious and sophisticated architectural devices. These come to modulate and reinterpret the space through a simple “visual tool”, alternating stripes 8.7 cm wide. The plastic repertory of the artist, composed of rhythmical elements, also includes materials, whose qualities chromatically enrich the alternation of the stripes. So, paint, wood, glass and Plexiglas widen one’s sensory experience of the colour, transparency and reflection.

This principle is illustrated by Daniel Buren's exhibition at the Lisson Gallery in 2007. For this occasion, the artist occupied the private and neutral space of a gallery with the idea of creating pieces intimately related to the architecture. Rather than producing his artworks beforehand in a studio, Daniel Buren conceived and realised most of his pieces while his exhibition was being set up. The course of the work done over the two-week installation period at the gallery was affected by unpredictable incidents such as delivery delays and fabrication miscalculations, which severely tested the artist and technicians. However, the risk-taking has allowed a fresh and spontaneous result, which wouldn’t have been possible if the exhibition had been over-thought-out.

INTRODUCTION

Ce principe a été illustré par l’exposition de Daniel Buren organisée à la Lisson Gallery en 2007. À cette occasion, l’artiste s’est approprié l’espace à la fois privé et neutre d’une galerie avec l’intention de créer des pièces intimement liées à son architecture. Ne produisant jamais au préalable ses œuvres dans un atelier, Daniel Buren a conçu et réalisé le plus gros de ses pièces au moment du montage de l’exposition. Les deux semaines de travail dans la galerie ont été rythmées par tout ce qu’une telle entreprise compte d’aléas, et retards de livraison comme erreurs de fabrication ont pu mettre l’artiste et les techniciens à rude épreuve. Cette prise de risques a néanmoins permis d’obtenir un résultat d’une fraîcheur et d’une spontanéité qu’aurait pu compromettre une conception trop travaillée.

endant près de quarante ans, Daniel Buren a créé dans et pour le lieu d’exposition, sans véritablement ressentir le besoin d’expérimenter ou de concevoir ses pièces dans l’espace protégé d’un atelier.

Dans les années 1990, l’œuvre-objet de ses débuts va évoluer vers des dispositifs architecturaux plus ambitieux et plus sophistiqués. Ceux-ci viennent alors moduler et réinterpréter l’espace à l’aide d’un « outil visuel » simple, des bandes alternées de 8,7 cm de largeur. Le répertoire plastique de l’artiste, composé de ces éléments rythmiques, compte aussi des matériaux dont les qualités chromatiques viennent enrichir l’alternance des bandes. Peinture, bois, verre, Plexiglas élargissent ainsi le champ d’expérience sensoriel à celui de la couleur, de la transparence et de la réflexion.

MC: In 1955, you had the opportunity to visit the studios of Picasso, Chagall and Masson in the south of France. What were your impressions when a few years later you saw their works in galleries and museums?

DB: It left me with a deep impression. That experience I had when I was 17 has deeply influenced my way of working. Indeed, during the three months that I travelled around on my Provence tour I studied the influence of landscape on art in Provence from Cézanne to Picasso. During that journey I met around fifty artists of which Masson, Picasso and Chagall were three. I encountered them and I stayed with them a couple of hours, sometimes more, to work with them. It was obviously fascinating. Of course, I knew only a few names like Picasso but I didn’t even know what he was doing. Most of them were unknown then and even more so today. Nevertheless, I still remember them well. Then I came back to Paris and over many years I systematically visited all their exhibitions. At that time, I wasn’t really making any distinctions. For example, I knew that Picasso was more interesting than Limouse.

I was observing all these with great interest.

MC : En 1955, tu as eu l’opportunité de visiter dans le Midi de la France les ateliers de Picasso, Chagall et Masson. Quelle a été ton impression quand quelques années plus tard tu as revu leurs œuvres dans des galeries ou des musées ?

DB : Cela m’a marqué. C’est une expérience que j’ai faite lorsque j’avais tout juste 17 ans et qui, de plus en plus fortement, a influencé ma méthode de travail. J’ai fait effectivement un tour de la Provence pendant trois mois. Mon étude portait sur l’influence du paysage sur l’art en Provence de Cézanne à Picasso. J’ai rencontré, pendant ce voyage, au moins une cinquantaine d’artistes dont Masson, Picasso, et Chagall. Je les ai rencontrés et je suis resté quelques heures, parfois plus, pour travailler avec eux. Cela m’avait évidemment passionné. A priori, je ne connaissais que quelques noms comme Picasso mais je ne savais même pas ce qu’il faisait. La plupart étaient des artistes inconnus qui le sont encore plus aujourd’hui. Je me souviens néanmoins bien d’eux. Ensuite je suis rentré à Paris et pendant plusieurs années, je suis allé voir systématiquement toutes leurs expositions. Je ne faisais pas encore trop de distinguo. Je pouvais seulement me rendre compte que Picasso était un peu plus brillant que Limouse, par exemple. Je regardais tout cela avec intérêt.

At that time, I was doing things which were close to painting. I was working in a cellar; it was obviously awful. I was telling myself I had to find another way to work even if I couldn’t afford it and couldn’t find anything else. I looked for everywhere, I even rented an attic room to get more light, of course! Then my work radically changed the day I decided to completely and definitively do without a studio, so I could start to work in the street. From that moment, I have never considered taking a studio or any other place to work except those where I make my exhibitions.

À cette époque, je faisais des choses qui étaient proches de la peinture. Je travaillais dans une cave, c’était évidemment terrible. Je me disais qu’il fallait que j’en sorte même si je n’en avais pas les moyens et que je ne trouvais rien. J’ai cherché partout, j’ai même loué une chambre de bonne à un moment donné pour avoir un peu plus de lumière, bien sûr ! Et puis tout mon travail a changé le jour où j’ai décidé de me passer complètement et définitivement d’un atelier, j’ai alors commencé à travailler dans la rue. Depuis ce jour, je n’ai plus jamais pris d’atelier ou de lieu pour travailler, sauf ceux où je fais des expositions.

MC: When was that?

DB: It was at the end of 1967. I started doing some flyposting in the street. Moreover, we can say that May ’68 suspended my production. I was telling myself that what everyone was doing was a mess and I wasn’t going to do the same. So, there was a short interruption. Then I continued to develop all my works and I never took another proper studio. Today, except for the space where I answer my mail, I don’t have any space where I could fabricate objects and I don’t feel that necessity.

MC : C’était à quelle époque ?

DB : C’était fin 1967 ; je commençais à faire des affichages sauvages dans la rue.

D’ailleurs on peut dire que mai 1968 a interrompu ma production. Je me disais que puisque tout le monde faisait n’importe quoi dans la rue, je n’allais pas faire la même chose. Il y a donc eu une petite interruption. Ensuite j’ai continué à développer tous ces travaux et je n’ai jamais repris d’atelier au sens propre du terme. Aujourd’hui, à part un lieu d’où je réponds principalement aux courriers, je n’ai toujours aucun espace où fabriquer des objets et n’en éprouve aucune nécessité !

MC : C’est l’endroit où tu fais des recherches ?

DB : Même pas, je ne suis presque jamais là ! C’est vraiment un bureau. Si je dois faire un texte, j’ai des bouquins qui me permettent de me rafraîchir la mémoire ou de voir ce qu’a fait untel ou untel.

L’atelier est selon moi un lieu où l’on fait des œuvres, c’est tout. Je ne dis pas que jamais je n’en reprendrais.

Si pour une raison quelconque je ne peux plus bouger, j’imagine que je serais obligé de plus travailler comme la tradition le veut et de prendre un lieu pour fabriquer des pièces. Ce n’est pas que je n’en fabrique pas mais je les crée d’une autre façon, au fur et à mesure des expositions et pour ces lieux. Ça n’a l’air de rien mais cela change tout. Quand je prends le temps de réaliser des objets, comme pour l’exposition un peu spéciale à Londres, il faut savoir qu’ils sont produits sur place et qu’ils seront démolis en partie ou en totalité, à la fin de l’exposition.

MC: It’s place where you do your research?

DB: Not even that; most of the time I am not here!

It’s really an office. If I need to write a text, I have books which allow me to jog my memory or to see what so and so did. I think the studio is a place where you create some works, that’s all. I won’t say I will never have a studio again. If for any reason I can’t move anymore, I guess I will have no other choice than working in a more traditional way and to have to take space to fabricate pieces. I won’t say I don’t fabricate but I create in another manner, through exhibitions and for these spaces. It seems like nothing but it changes everything. When I take the time to create some objects, like for the exhibition in London, you have to be aware of the fact that they are fabricated site-specifically and they will be partially or totally destroyed at the end of the exhibition.

As you know, all the pieces for an exhibition are worked on right up to the last minute. There’s no step back. And once the installation is completed the public enters. I don’t have the opportunity to backtrack. It has to work immediately and in the best possible way.

We don’t have the security of the studio which allows one to wait months, even years, to make or not to make a piece, or destroy it without telling anyone about its existence. If you remove the studio, you take off a big protection and you put yourself in a more fragile situation. You are directly thrown in the “lion pit”. I have accepted the responsibility. What is probably more positive is the possibility of risk-taking and freshness you can’t have when thinking for years about the painting you will be showing. It has developed a logic in my work. Most importantly, I also do it because my work is about space. How do you want to work on a space when you don’t even know it?

ALL THE PIECES FOR AN EXHIBITION ARE WORKED ON TO THE LAST MINUTE

Toutes les pièces d’une exposition sont faites, tu es bien placée pour le savoir, jusqu’à la dernière minute. Il n’y a aucun recul. Et au moment où c’est fini, c’est le public qui rentre. Je n’ai plus la possibilité de faire machine arrière. Il faut que ça marche tout de suite, le mieux possible. Il n’y a pas la protection de l’atelier qui permet d’attendre des mois voire des années pour faire ou ne pas faire une pièce, ou la détruire sans que personne ne sache rien de son existence.

Donc si vous enlevez l’atelier, vous ôtez une énorme protection et vous vous mettez dans une position beaucoup plus fragile. Vous êtes tout de suite jeté dans la « fosse aux lions » du public. J’en ai accepté la responsabilité. Le côté qui est peut-être le plus positif, c’est la possibilité d’une prise de risque et d’une fraîcheur que vous ne pouvez pas avoir si vous réfléchissez pendant des années à la toile que vous allez montrer. Ça a développé une logique dans mon travail. Enfin le plus important, c’est que je travaille sur l’espace, et comment voulez-vous travailler sur l’espace pour un espace que vous ne connaissez pas ?

MC: While observing you, we realise that drawing comes before any realisations. Why did you choose to draw rather than make models, for example?

DB: Most of the time I don’t even make a drawing. I do things directly.

Generally, I need to make drawings when I work with people to help them understand what I have in mind in order for them to be able to help me.

MC : En t’observant travailler sur l’exposition, on se rend compte que le dessin est un passage obligé avant toute réalisation.

Pourquoi as-tu opté pour le dessin plutôt que pour la maquette, par exemple?

DB : Le plus souvent je n’ai même pas de dessin. Je fais la pièce directement. J’en ai généralement besoin quand je travaille avec d’autres personnes pour qu’ils puissent comprendre ce que je veux faire et qu’ils puissent m’aider.

MC: Was it the case at the gallery?

DB: There are, as you know, some artworks, which have been produced on site. Drawing is essential to help people to build the pieces or prepare them. Moreover, I enjoy drawing but that’s secondary. When the drawing is useful I employ it. Actually, I don’t make many models, except when required for a competition or public commission. Beaubourg was an exception; that’s why I made a model; otherwise I never make any model. I don’t like them.

MC: Why? DB: Because I don’t need them. A model doesn’t teach me anything.

I am frightened by the fact that the model could distort my ideas of something, which, anyway, doesn’t match the reality.

MC : Pour quelles raisons ?

DB : Parce que je n’en ai pas besoin.

Une maquette ne m’apprend rien. J’ai toujours peur que la maquette déforme l’idée que l’on se fait de quelque chose qui, de toute façon, n’est pas en rapport avec ce qui sera dans la réalité.

JE NE FAIS QUASIMENT JAMAIS DE MAQUETTES

MC : C’était le cas à la galerie.

DB : Il y a, comme tu le sais, des choses qui ont été produites sur place. Le dessin est donc essentiel pour que d’autres puissent réaliser les pièces ou bien les préparer. En plus, j’aime beaucoup dessiner mais ça, c’est tout à fait secondaire. Quand le dessin est utile, je l’utilise. Je ne fais quasiment jamais de maquettes sauf quand je suis obligé dans le cadre de concours pour des pièces publiques. C’était le cas pour l’exposition de Beaubourg en 2002, mais c’était une exception.

Sinon je ne fais jamais de maquettes.

Je n’aime pas les maquettes.

MC: Do you always sell your drawings in series as you did at the gallery?

DB: It depends but generally, yes. It’s the case at the Lisson Gallery as I had a small number of them and they were working all together as a piece. Buying just one drawing makes no sense.

At the beginning, I was showing my drawings, but I didn’t want to sell them.

As my work is difficult to commercialise, I didn’t want everything to come from them. Then one day some of my friends and artists told me: “Your drawings are really good! There’s no shame to sell them and it’s always very wise to make them pass around!” I told myself they were probably right, as I was showing my drawings in catalogues why not sell them? It’s at that moment that I got the idea to display them in a stand, which is another small complication. Well, I almost didn’t sell any at all, whereas I’d been afraid that suddenly everyone would pounce on them because they are cheaper and more traditional. If I design a piece for a church, it will be almost impossible to buy except if you acquire the church. We can imagine that people who liked it might say: “Look I would fancy buying a drawing of the work, it would be a souvenir, also it’s not expensive.” Well, no!

MC : Est-ce que tu les vends toujours en série comme ceux exposés à la galerie ?

DB : Ça dépend mais généralement, oui. C’était effectivement le cas à la Lisson Gallery. Puisque j’en avais assez peu et qu’ils se tenaient comme une pièce. En acheter un seul n’avait pas de sens.

Au départ, je montrais mes dessins, mais je ne voulais pas les vendre, parce que mon travail étant difficile à commercialiser, je n’avais pas envie que tout se fasse à travers eux.

Puis un jour des amis et des artistes m’ont dit : « Tes dessins sont très bien ! Il n’y a pas de honte à les vendre et puis c’est très bien de les faire circuler ! » Je me suis dit qu’ils n’avaient peut-être pas tort, puisque je les mettais dans des catalogues pourquoi ne pas les vendre ? C’est là que j’ai eu l’idée de les présenter sur des pupitres. Ce qui est une petite complication en plus. Et bien, je n’en ai quasiment pas vendu alors que j’avais peur que d’un seul coup tout le monde ne se jette dessus parce que c’était moins cher et plus traditionnel. Si je fais une pièce pour une église, celle-ci étant quasiment inaccessible sauf si on achète l’église, on peut imaginer que des gens qui l’ont aimée se disent : « Tiens, j‘achèterais bien un dessin de ça, ce serait pour moi un petit souvenir et ça ne vaut pas très cher. » Eh bien non !

35 MC: Violet Verona, Hot Paprika, Grecian Spa, Bermuda Cocktail, Harvest Fruits, Sunflower Symphony… Your palette has become enriched and intensified over the years. How do you explain that evolution?

DB: I have always been working with colour and about colours. When I was using fabric, I was dependent on what the manufacturer was making. There was one colour available, two, sometimes four and the maximum was five. As I then had people weaving the fabric for me I could introduce more colours. But as I had to order at least a kilometre in length to have it woven, I couldn’t have that many colours, while the paper was printed as I wanted. And so, I printed fifty different colours: twenty greens, three blues, a dozen reds etc. Then, I combined colours with things like painted walls, coloured objects or material with their own colours: Formica, steel or raw wood. I’ve always brought a variety of colours by the colours of material or in covering surfaces with paint. It’s infinite.

Comment expliques-tu ce changement?

DB : J’ai toujours travaillé avec la couleur et autour de la couleur. Quand j’utilisais le tissu, j’étais tributaire de ce que le fabricant faisait. Il y avait parfois une couleur disponible, deux, parfois quatre et le maximum a été cinq. Comme ensuite j’ai fait tisser le tissu moi-même, j’ai introduit d’autres couleurs. Mais comme pour le faire tisser il fallait en commander un kilomètre, je ne pouvais pas faire tant de couleurs, alors que le papier était imprimé comme je le voulais. Et là, j’ai imprimé cinquante couleurs différentes : vingt verts, trois bleus, douze rouges etc. Puis, après, j’ai mélangé tout cela avec des murs peints ou des objets ou des matériaux qui ont leur propre couleur : le formica, l’acier ou le bois brut. J’ai tout le temps apporté des couleurs différentes soit par la couleur propre des matériaux, soit par le recouvrement de peinture. C’est infini.

MC: From what I’ve heard the colours you choose don’t necessary correspond to your own taste. How do you select them?

DB: I have created a series of systems to get around that idea. I didn’t want my taste, either good or bad, to determine the choice of colours. I wanted to get round this major obstacle rather than experimenting and making a work about colour. So I decided to choose colours randomly and I asked some people I didn’t know to pick them even if I obviously have a taste like everybody. Even if it’s a colour I dislike, I work with it. I do it this way because in any case the colour has its own meaning. The effects provoked are always strong and unpredictable.

Of course, it puts me in a dangerous position with people working with colour for pseudo-scientific reasons, which I don’t believe. It would be lying to you if I told you that red doesn’t stimulate a little bit more than blue, but I only believe it for three seconds.

MC : J’ai cru comprendre que les couleurs que tu sélectionnes ne correspondent pas nécessairement à ton goût. De quelle manière les choisis-tu ?

DB : J’ai inventé toute une série de systèmes pour tourner autour de cette idée. Je ne voulais pas que ce soit mon goût, qu’il soit bon ou mauvais, qui détermine le choix des couleurs. Je voulais essayer de contourner cet obstacle majeur au lieu d’expérimenter et d’entreprendre un travail de fond avec la couleur. J’ai donc tiré des couleurs au hasard ou bien j’ai demandé à des personnes, que je ne connaissais pas, de choisir. J’ai évidemment un goût comme tout le monde.

Même si c’est une couleur qui ne me plaît pas, je travaille avec. Je le fais parce que dans tous les cas de figures la couleur a son propre parler. Les effets que cela provoque sont toujours très forts et imprévisibles. Évidemment ça me met en porte-à-faux vis-à-vis des gens qui utilisent la couleur pour des raisons pseudoscientifiques auxquelles je ne crois absolument pas. Je ne dis pas que le rouge ne puisse pas exciter un peu plus que le bleu, mais je n’y crois que trois secondes.

MC: On what type of material?

DB: On fabrics. It’s hung on houses when there’s a funeral. Because of that, in Japan, I am careful not to use white and purple regularly alternating stripes.

Otherwise, everybody is going to interpret what I did as if it were something mortuary.

And if it’s not my intention, the work presented won’t be understood as it should be.

The colours “talk” and you’d better be aware of their meaning when they talk!

MC : Sur quel genre de support ?

DB : Sur des tissus qui sont accrochés sur les maisons au moment des enterrements.

Sachant ça, je fais en sorte au Japon de ne jamais utiliser des bandes alternées régulières blanches et violettes. Sinon tout le monde va interpréter ce que je fais comme quelque chose de funéraire, même si ce n’était pas dans mes intentions, le travail présenté ne sera pas compris pour ce qu’il devrait être. Les couleurs « parlent » et il vaut mieux être conscient de ce qu’elles disent au moment où elles le disent !

MC: Your stripes systematically measure 8.7 cm in width. I’m sure it’s a question you have been asked fifteen thousand times, but is it a purely aesthetic choice?

DB: No, thirty thousand times! (Laugh) It’s everything except aesthetic. It was the width of the stripes of the fabric I was originally using. After hundreds of experimentations with that fabric for some visual matters, it seemed the right size to me.

I kept that size at a time I was about to stop using fabric. Then, when I started to have people printing for me I kept the same width, three millimetres either way.

MC : Tes bandes mesurent systématiquement 8,7 cm de large. Est-ce un choix purement esthétique ? C’est une question qu’on a dû te poser quinze mille fois.

DB : Non, trente mille ! (Rires) C’est tout sauf esthétique. C’était la taille des bandes du tissu que j’utilisais au début. Après avoir fait des centaines d’expérimentations avec ce tissu pour des questions qui m’intéressaient visuellement, cela m’a semblé être la taille juste. Au moment où j’ai arrêté d’utiliser le tissu, j’ai décidé de garder cette dimension. Ensuite, quand j’ai commencé à faire imprimer le papier, j’ai gardé la même dimension et de fil et en aiguille j’ai toujours utilisé cette largeur à trois millimètres près.

MC : Dans un entretien1, j’ai pu lire que tes bandes permettaient de révéler l’architecture des lieux que tu investis. Qu’as-tu voulu suggérer à la Lisson Gallery ?

DB : Presque partout, sauf dans la salle de la grande verrière, les bandes définissent l’épaisseur des objets qui sortent du mur. C’est le profil qui est souligné. Si vous êtes bien en face de certains des murs vous ne voyez pas le profil. Et dès que vous bougez, vous voyez que la largeur des bandes vous donne la taille et l’épaisseur de la sortie. Donc, s’il y a une bande cela correspond à une épaisseur de 8,7 cm, deux à 17,4 cm, trois à 26,1 cm et ainsi de suite. C’est vraiment un outil de mesure. Avec ce genre d’objet ce qui est intéressant ce n’est pas le carré blanc ou noir, mais c’est de pouvoir lire à quel point il sort du mur.

MC: In an interview,1 I read that your stripes allowed you to reveal the architecture of the space you appropriated. What did you want to suggest at the Lisson Gallery?

DB: Almost everywhere, except in the room with the large skylight, the stripes delimit the depth of the object, which comes out the wall. The outline is underlined. If you stand facing some of the walls you can’t see the profile. And as soon as you move, you understand that the width of the stripes gives you the size and thickness of the object projecting from the wall. So, if you have one stripe it corresponds to a depth of 8.7 cm, two are 17.4 cm, three are 26.1 cm and and so on. It’s really like a measuring tool. What’s interesting with that kind of element is not the white or back squares but how you can sense how much they come out the wall.

MC : Le Plexiglas est un matériau assez récurrent dans ton travail. Il est d’ailleurs employé à trois reprises dans l’exposition. Quels avantages apporte-il ?

DB : J’utilise depuis très longtemps le Plexiglas comme le miroir et le verre. Si je ne me trompe pas j’ai d’abord commencé à travailler avec le verre. J’aime beaucoup les matériaux transparents tels que celui-là. J’ai fait plein de pièces avec des verres découpés, des verres cassés, etc.

J’étais d’ailleurs devenu très habile. Mais maintenant ça fait longtemps que je ne l’utilise plus. Le problème du verre c’est que c’est très délicat, très fragile et très difficile à transporter. C’est de plus très lourd et enfin selon la manière dont c’est utilisé ça peut être relativement dangereux. Si je fais couper pour une exposition le toit d’une Cabane ou un faux plafond en verre ce sera certainement interdit pour des raisons de sécurité. Cela pourrait tomber et blesser quelqu’un. C’est donc quand même un handicap parce que dès qu’il s’agit d’une pièce publique il faut faire attention.

En revanche, le Plexiglas, surtout le polycarbonate, qui est moins lourd ne se casse pas, ne se brise pas et ne risque pas de couper. En même temps, c’est moins beau et plus cher que le verre, surtout quand vous prenez du Plexiglas de qualité qui ne jaunit pas et qui est assez épais pour ne pas gondoler.

MC: Plexiglas (Perspex) is a recurrent material in your work. Indeed, it’s employed in three occasions in your exhibition. What’s its advantage?

DB: For a very long time, I have been using Plexiglas as well as mirror and glass. If I am right I started in using glass. I really like transparent materials. I’ve made pieces with cut glass, broken glass etc. Moreover I was becoming very dexterous. But now, I have been a very long time without using it. The problem with glass is that’s very delicate, very fragile and difficult to carry. It’s also very heavy and, finally, in the way that it’s used it’s relatively dangerous. If, for an exhibition, I cut some glass for the roof of a Cabane or a fake ceiling it will surely be forbidden for security reasons. It could fall and injure someone. So, it’s really a handicap because as soon as it’s a public commission you have to be careful.

On the other hand, Plexiglas, especially polycarbonate, is lighter; it doesn’t break, doesn’t shatter and presents no risk of cutting anyone if the installation were to collapse. At the same time, it’s not as nice as glass and it’s more expensive, especially when you use high-quality Plexiglas, which doesn’t turn yellow and which is thick enough not to distort.

MC: At 29 Bell Street, volumes are of prime importance.

They plunge into and burst from the gallery walls. There are triangles or squares, but no curves are seen. Why did you choose some polygonal forms but not others?

DB: My immediate answer is that it was easier because of the limited time that we had.

We could really imagine that rather than having a parallelepiped, we could have a circle. If we have a circle, everything becomes more complicated. I was already running late.

We have to keep in mind that we had two weeks to install this exhibition. If I had wanted more complicated forms, I think I wouldn’t have made it. We were already on the edge and then the fabricators erred! If we’d actually requested curves, who knows what we would have got? (Laugh)

IF WE HAVE A CIRCLE, EVERYTHING BECOMES MORE COMPLICATED

MC : Au 29 Bell Street, les volumes sont mis à l’honneur. Ils s’enfoncent ou jaillissent des murs de la galerie. Ce sont des triangles ou des carrés, mais aucune courbe n’est visible. Pourquoi n’as-tu choisi que des formes polygonales ?

DB : Ma réponse immédiate est que c’était plus facile au vu du peu de temps qu’on avait. On pourrait très bien imaginer qu’au lieu d’avoir un parallélépipède, on aurait eu un rond. Si on a un rond tout devient plus compliqué. J’étais déjà suffisamment en retard. Il ne faut pas oublier que nous avons monté l’exposition en quinze jours. Si je m’étais lancé dans des formes plus compliquées, je crois qu’on n’y serait jamais arrivés. Déjà qu’on était limite et que les menuisiers se sont trompés !

Si on leur avait demandé des courbes, je ne sais pas ce qu’on aurait eu. (Rires).

MC: We can also adapt the piece according to the place.

DB: We adapt according to the wall of that place. We’ll have a piece with another character because it’s going to be larger, higher; it’s going to take the place of the new wall, it’s going to look completely different.

In general, the pieces I make are ephemeral. In some way, it’s something I have integrated into my thought process.

As always happens at the end of an exhibition I never come back to check if everything has been completely demolished; I almost never assist in the destruction of my pieces.

I think, if I were there, I would be less detached. In my head, I know that it’s all done. It has been going on for over forty years, so I am used to it.

I nevertheless oversaw the demolition of the whole exhibition at Beaubourg, the extent of which corresponds to the top floor of the centre. It was gigantic! I confess I had a little bit the feeling of, how to describe… not of sadness but almost of stalling. We worked on the installation for four or five weeks with a team of around twenty people who were working every day. It was really hard work. Then we destroyed the whole show with a sledge hammer. As I didn’t want people to take advantage of the situation and take small chunks to bring them back home (something I am always careful about), I have been myself demolishing all the pieces. I marked all the glass and drew some red crosses everywhere. It became impossible to take anything.

Then a specialised company came in to break everything up with a sledge hammer. I confess I saw it, I wasn’t glad.

When I was flyposting in Paris with the risk of being arrested by the police, it was an endless task. Sometimes I would come back one hour later to take a picture and it was already covered or ripped! But it didn’t bother me, I was telling myself: “Never mind! You have to start again.”

IN GENERAL, THE PIECES I MAKE ARE EPHEMERAL

EN GÉNÉRAL LES PIÈCES RÉALISÉES SONT ÉPHÉMÈRES

MC : On peut adapter la pièce en fonction du lieu.

DB : On l’adapte en fonction du mur du lieu. On va avoir une pièce qui va avoir une autre allure parce qu‘elle va être plus large, plus haute ; la pièce va prendre la place de ce nouveau mur, elle va être complètement différente.

En général les pièces réalisées sont éphémères. D’une certaine façon, c’est une chose qui est intégrée dans mon esprit.

Comme cela arrive toujours à la fin de l’exposition et que je ne reviens jamais pour voir si tout a bien été démoli, je n’assiste quasiment jamais à la destruction de mes pièces. Je pense que si j’étais présent, je serais moins détaché. Dans ma tête, je sais que c’est fini. Ça fait quand même depuis plus de quarante ans que ça dure, je suis donc habitué.

J’ai quand même assisté à la destruction de toute l’exposition de Beaubourg dont la surface correspond quand même à tout le dernier étage du centre. C’était énorme ! J’avoue que j’avais un petit peu un sentiment, comment dire… pas de tristesse mais presque de piétinement. On avait fait un travail de montage qui avait duré quatre, cinq semaines, avec une équipe d’environ vingt personnes qui était là tous les jours. C’était vraiment un gros travail. En plus comme je ne voulais pas que des gens profitent de la situation en prenant des petits morceaux pour les mettre chez eux (ce dont je me méfie toujours), je suis allé moi-même détruire toutes les pièces. J’ai « graffité » tous les verres et j’ai mis des croix rouges partout. On ne pouvait donc plus rien prendre.

Ensuite une entreprise spécialisée est venue tout casser à la masse. J’avoue que ça n’était pas gai à voir.

Quand je collais des affiches dans Paris au risque de me faire prendre par la police, c’était un travail fou. Quand parfois je revenais une heure après pour prendre une photo, c’était déjà recouvert ou déchiré ! Mais ça ne me gênait pas, je me disais : « Eh bien tant pis ! Il faut que je recommence. »

MC: It is part of the game.

DB: Exactly! It has always been my way of working.

When I was covering an entire gallery with some posters and four weeks later the technicians were taking them off behind my back, I was telling myself: “And yes, well, it’s normal.

What could they do? They had no other choice.”

Fortunately I had taken two or three pictures of the piece, proof that the work had existed. These photos shouldn’t objectify the work in question while the systematic lack of pictures, which means proof, could glorify the work in the long term.

The destruction of a large part of my works, soon after the exhibition closes, is really part of my work. That is the reason why I don’t really have a feeling of joy or sadness in relation to that. It is how it is, that’s all.

MC : Ca fait partie du jeu ?

DB : Complètement ! Ça a toujours été mon travail. Quand je recouvrais toute une galerie d’affiches et que les techniciens quatre semaines après décollaient tout dans mon dos, je me disais : « C’est normal, qu’est-ce qu’ils peuvent en faire ? Ils sont bien obligés de faire ça. » Heureusement qu’on avait deux ou trois photos de la pièce, preuves que ce travail avait bien existé. Ces photos ne doivent pas réifier le travail en question alors que le manque systématique de photos, c’est-à-dire de preuves, pourrait à la longue, le mythifier.

La destruction d’une grande partie des œuvres, au fur et à mesure qu’elles sont faites, fait vraiment partie de mon travail. Je n’ai donc jamais vraiment eu de sentiments de joie ou de tristesse face à ça. C’est ainsi, un point c’est tout.

Daniel Buren utilise pendant un temps des toiles rigides couvertes de bandes alternées de 8,7 cm de largeur. Ce motif vertical est à l’origine de son langage artistique.

For a period of time, Daniel Buren used canvas covered with alternating stripes, cut 8.7 cm wide.

This motif became the foundation of his artistic language.

1966

En décembre, création du groupe BMPT par Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, Michel Parmentier et Niele Toroni. L’idée de l’utilisation répétitive d’un même motif afin d’accentuer le caractère impersonnel de l’œuvre d’art motive la création de pièces facilement identifiables à leurs auteurs.

In December, the group BMPT was created by Daniel Buren, Olivier Mosset, Michel Parmentier and Niele Toroni. The idea of a repetitive use of the same pattern emphasising the impersonal aspect of the artwork motivated the creation of pieces easily identifiable as works by this group of artists.

The art of Daniel Buren situates itself within the encounter of new places; in so doing, it satisfies a perpetual desire for renewal. Around one hundred of his works created in situ have been circulated throughout the world. In 2007, the Lisson Gallery spaces in London became the theatrical centre of these new experiments. During his time there, Daniel Buren conceived of great architecture through custom-built pieces. The photographs and artist’s words illustrate the two weeks of his creative process at the gallery: from preparatory drawings to the positioning of volumes, colours and stripes.

This collection dedicated to artists’ studios, unveiled in a quasi-journalist manner, portrays the essence of the space of creation. The day-to-day life of these artists is documented through photographs and conversations in order to render their thought process and the studio atmosphere, from the most conventional to the most unpredictable elements.
