History
The castle originated from a stronghold built by the Visconti in the 14th century to take care of their land in the area. Probably between 1315 and 1319 the nearby church of Saint Stephan was founded and the castle built by Luchino Visconti, Lord of Milan.
The first mention of a castle in Binasco dates back to 1329, when it was used by Azzone Visconti and his uncle Giovanni as a prison for their political opponents. In the 17th century the castle underwent transformations and restorations. At the end of the 19th century it was sacked during the Napoleonic age and in 1869 hit by a ruinous fire. The current aspect is the result of subsequent restorations that gave back the sense of the ancient fortress. Two towers are still visible along the south front.

In the year 1400 in the iner courtyard of the castle was located the tower. Lately is was demolished. In our project we propose to create the new metaphorical volume to make the visitor think about its purpose and ask a question about the history of this space. The tower serve also as a “lighthouse”. It creates a high light stream in the evening attracting people to the city centre and setting an atmosphe atmosphere inside the courtyard which can be used for several events. The tower is made of thin steel beams and transparent polycarbonate. The electric devices are located in the bottom part of it.

Detail The handrail of the staircase is done though sottaction; instead of adding a new element it has been projected a continuous void all along the concrete core creating a space perfect for hand to grab rising the steps. during night time, the whole staricase will be lighted but as you can see in the axonometric section, a led light will be impleme implemented inside the void, not visible from the outside to create a nice light effect and help people in the dark.

Staircase details
Detail The corner landing has been studied as an unique element made of the steel frame and the grid as all the other steps. It is attached to a solid tapered steel profile, itself attached to the concrete core through a pocket steel profile ancho anchored trough 4 R-SPL-II-P SafetyPlus II bolts, verified structurally.
Detail The typical step is made by a prefabricated steel frame of 34cm x 120cm x 0.4cm, where a steel grid is anchored into the void shape in the middle of it. The step Itself is anchored to the concrete co core through 3 R-SPL-II-P SafetyPlus II bolts, verified structurally. The final edge of the step is where the other step are welded to give a unique element its unique shape. From the outside will be visible just the joint between the steps giving the idea of a light “zig zag” structure.

Detail All the sticks are linke to a continuos system starting from the first step collar going up through all the steps. Is visible how the steps has the side metal element according to keep the stick standing welded to themselves. Special notes to the beginnig anf the end of the staircase. the so called collars are made with the same system of the corner landings in a poc joint steel profile system, everything attached pocket to the concrete core.

Detail (A (A) we can see the horizontal section of one of the anchors of the sticks of 2cm of diameter. The steel elements are floating from the ground (B) just finishing at 12 cm to it, thanks to the first attachement (C) where a steel profile is welded to the the round collare at the base attached to the concrete core. From this first step, the end of the first part of the stick is made by a male-female bolt joint (D) the first and only rigid phase of the whole stick that instead will be free to move according to heat extension through the whole stairacse thanks to the multiple stiff element that are just keeping the sticks close to the steps but not strictly ancoring them (E). The Sticks, due to economic and conctruction reason are assembled in the working site through a male-female passing joint (F). Ending free at the end (G) without any kind of constraints.

Staircase details Detail The staircase has the necessity to open a couple of portals into the castle to provide entrances. this is led to the design of a steel portale made by 4 HEB 20 steel ProďŹ les bolted all together through M6 bolts. this portal will lead also all the load through the vertical axes. through the masonry, attached through M6 bolts to the HEB proďŹ les, two suspension cable used to ancor and keep standing the two tapered beams anchored to bottom HEB and the metal slab used as landing to get access to the castle. The suspension cables are adjust in relation to the distance from the portal to the castle and the sy rope system is made by a 2cm diameter steel element made by assembling and wrapping alltogether 20 smaller steel ropes.
