WINNIPEG – Alden Richards of the AlDub phenomenon was in Winnipeg for only a little more than 24 hours but he left an indelible mark on the hearts of the local AlDub Nation fans. A huge crowd of excited fans led by the Maiden Heaven Winnipeg group welcomed Alden and co-performers, actor Rocco Nacino and comedian Kim Idol, at Winnipeg’s James Richardson International Airport on the eve of his March 22nd Bae in the City concert. Alden minus his showbiz better-half Maine Mendoza (Yaya Dub) did not disappoint his devoted local followers. The huge concert audience proved that Alden, even without Maine, could carry a sold-out show. During the concert at the Club Regent Event Centre, Alden sang songs, danced and continued to delight his fans by accommodating requests for more selfies and hugs. See ALDEN p22

Trouble in paradise

Having lived in Davao City for half of my life, I’ve had little experience with suppression or oppression. This may sound strange to those who seem to think that the city is under some kind of dictatorial rule, but the truth is that while Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is a tough chief executive, he reserves his iron fist for criminals, law breakers, and all sorts of “lowlifes,” as he calls them. For all others, he protects their freedoms zealously, ensuring that everyone can do anything they want without fear of reprisal. As a practicing journalist for 22 years, that is an important thing for me. So it was with some surprise that I saw suppression in a place I had least expected it. Duterte had scheduled a rally in Camiguin on March 23, but the ruling Romualdo family made it

“What’s wrong with me?” I remember the well-dressed, puttogether woman who sat on the couch opposite me, asking this question out loud more to herself than to me, I think. Kate was days away from her wedding day, which was perfectly planned, right down to the colour of nail polish she would be wearing. Her adoration for her fiancé was clear; he was the love of her life, kind, intelligent and supportive. Both sides of the family got along well, and everyone was excited. Yet, Kate couldn’t help that as the big day drew closer, her anxiety and doubts were getting louder. When she thought about the wedding, she would get this sinking feeling in her stomach and wonder if she was doing the right thing. Then there was Jerry who had retired two weeks earlier. He had been a well-respected, successful human resources manager in a large company. He was looking forward to travelling, playing golf and visiting with friends. But lately, he was feeling sad and nervous for no apparent reason. He and his spouse were arguing more despite having more time to spend together. When people think of life

difficult for the organizers. When a photographer and I arrived on the morning before the rally at the rally site in Mambajao, we learned that the city government had pulled out the electricity. The organizers had to get a generator to power the sound system. To say that the Romualdo family had entrenched themselves in Camiguin is an understatement. Baby Romualdo is running for governor of Camiguin. She is the wife of JJ Romualdo who is the mayor of Mambajao. Seeking reelection for the lone district of Camiguin is Rep. XJ Romualdo, brother of JJ. XJ replaced his then re-electionist father who died in April 2013. Another Romualdo, Dan-Dan is running as provincial board member. The Romualdos are members of the Liberal Party, whose candidate is Mar Roxas.

events such as retirement, getting married or having a family, they often focus on the excitement and benefits of the change. But as time gets closer to the big event or soon after it happens, unexpected emotions such as anxiety or sadness can happen, causing people to feel conflicted. Guilt sometimes occurs, which can add to the emotional confusion and thoughts that begin with, “I should be happy, but instead I’m sad,” followed by, “What is wrong with me?” Some people don’t realize that change, good or bad, can be difficult. This is in part because even good change is accompanied by loss. Kate, in our first example, knew that her uneasiness was not at all due to a loss of love for her fiancé or that she didn’t want to marry him. After allowing herself to think about it, she realized that she was saying goodbye to some of her independence. For most of her adult life, she made her own decisions about finances, career, and did what she wanted when she wanted. Now, she was in a partnership and needed to think about the wellbeing of two people. She also wondered about how much time she would be able to spend with her friends and family.

Camiguin has only about 58,000 registered voters, but Duterte said it was important to visit it to show that the days of “feudalism” and “warlordism” are over. The crowd at his rally was thin compared with previous sorties that have attracted up to 50,000 people. According to the people I talked to, they were told that they would lose their benefits like scholarships, health insurance, and even their cash incentives if they attended the rally. In his speech, Duterte said the Romualdo clan have lorded it over Camiguin for too long. “And you know when that happens, the feudal lords begin to think they own the place and the people,” he said. He said even his rally was subjected to the kind of “warlordism” that has plagued the province. “They gave us a hard time when we applied for a permit. They cut our electrical connection,” he said. “Baho na nga style (That style stinks),” he said. He reminded the Romualdos that political rallies are protected by the Constitution

and that they could get in trouble for trying to stop yesterday’s rally. “The people need to hear the candidates so that they can make the right choice,” he said. Duterte said he himself does not require a permit for any rally in Davao City and that the organizers only need to tell the police where it would be held. He also hit the Romualdos for their politics of convenience, saying they have been changing parties through the years depending on who is in power. But at the same time, Duterte reminded the people at the rally that it is their fault that the Romualdos are in power. “You keep voting for them,” he said. I’m hoping this kind of politics will end and that we as a people will learn to vote for the right people. Jon Joaquin is the Associate Editor of EDGE Davao, the newest daily newspaper in Mindanao. It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday After discussing these worries with her fiancé, she realized that he would be supportive of her individual needs too, and the doubts disappeared. After some discussion, Jerry realized that before retirement, he assumed that he would be living the good life. He happily thought about doing what he pleased, having fun all day, and not having to worry about anything. But before long, he started to miss having a purpose to get up in the morning. He didn’t have a routine any longer and he missed having responsibility. His sadness and unrest were affecting his marriage since he was confused about his feelings, which only came out as anger and frustration. After he allowed himself to processes these feelings, he realized that he still needed some structure. He found a parttime job doing bookkeeping for a small company and volunteered at the hospital one day a week. He also joined a gym so that he could have a morning exercise routine. The sadness eased and he felt that he had a balanced lifestyle. If you are having a hard time dealing with a big life event, consider the following: • Acknowledge your feelings,

no matter what they are. Telling yourself that you “shouldn’t” feel a certain way may cause guilt and only intensify the uncomfortable feelings. Try writing out thoughts in a journal or e-mail yourself. • Talk to someone you trust. This will avoid feeling alone and feeling that something is “wrong” with you. You might find that others will open up and share similar sentiments about their own experiences. • Make a list of what your life looked like before and after the change. Highlight the things that you like or enjoyed about both times in your life. Then think about whether there are ways to still have it in some way. • Think about other big changes in your past and whether there were any similar feelings. Was there anything that helped to calm you down at that time? Chances are, the same strategies will help again. “Love is more afraid of change than destruction.” – Friedrich Nietzsche, philosopher, poet and scholar Cheryl Dizon-Reynante is a licensed therapist with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

The new immigration minister has already corrected a number of things the former Harper government instituted and he is not finished yet. John McCallum says that the government is also looking at ways to make it easier for international students in Canada to get permanent resident status. Many would agree that attracting the best and brightest from abroad goes a long way to building a stronger Canadian economy. “We should be doing everything we can to court them,” says the Minister says. They are the “cream of the crop in terms of future Canadians.” It is one thing for Canadian universities to attract foreign students but what mechanism is in place for them to obtain permanent residency? His specific target is the federal express entry immigration selection system that has been in force since January 2015.

PILIPINO EXPRESS

Readers who know something about express entry will be aware that the selection is based on a point system, called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). On January 28, 2016, for example, candidates who scored at least 457 points were invited to apply for their permanent residency. This number should be put into perspective because applicants can receive 600 additional points for a confirmed Canadian job offer (LMIA) or provincial nomination. In other words, these extra points would almost guarantee selection. But what about the foreign graduates? Most international foreign students complete their studies in Canada and apply for a postgraduate work permit. It is great they can work but the “open” work permit is not based on an approved Canadian job offer and therefore it is not eligible for the 600 additional CRS

Minister McCallum on express entry and international students points. Many pointed out this deficiency, including this writer in my article “Express Entry 2015, one month in” (Pilipino Express, 16 February 2015). The Conservatives missed the boat on international foreign graduates and did nothing to correct it. Minister McCallum correctly concludes, “International students have been short-changed by the express entry system.” One of the Liberal election promises was to address the shortcomings of the express entry selection system. Minister McCallum has announced his intention to change things in the immigration world. His renamed department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC, formerly known as CIC) has been proactive in many areas since the Liberals came into office just over four months ago. The details of his proposed changes to express

entry have not been released but his word is something we have learned to count on. We have the example of the Syrian refugees, the increased cap on parent and grandparent sponsorships, and the proposed changes to the Citizenship Act as proof positive that he honours his word. Now we just need details. In contrast to the federal government, the provinces have been leading the way when it comes to giving international students a way to stay in Canada. The nominee programs of all provinces have provisions for international foreign graduates. Ontario is perhaps the best example with special categories for PhD and Master’s level graduates. Manitoba includes international foreign graduates and overseas foreign workers as part of their in-Manitoba class of applicants. The provincial

nominee programs do not, however, carry the same weight as changes in express entry”. I spoke briefly to Liberal Member of Parliament Kevin Lamoureux and complimented the government on its changes to citizenship and he said they are not done yet. We can expect to hear more positive news about changes in immigration in the next few months and one that looms large, especially for the foreign students in Canada, are the expected changes in express entry. Onward and upward Back in the summer, I shared with you some very personal details of my life. I don’t usually announce to the world intimate details of the Burgos Bunch, but when it came to the basic human rights of one of my children, I didn’t hesitate to share our story. To recap, if you read my past articles “Gender Identity Crisis” and “Gender Identity Theft,” you’ll know that Elizabeth and I have a transgender daughter. You will also know that we have been in a lengthy human rights complaint against a school division in Manitoba. The basis was discrimination. Since Bella’s transition in August 2014, we have asked for transgender (gender identity) education, training and guidelines to be implemented in the school division, as it would provide the basis for understanding and knowing the rights of transgender individuals. I’ve got great news: I’m happy to report that after more

than a year and a half, we have resolved our human rights filing. Our family, the Manitoba Human Rights Commission and the school division have developed gender identity guidelines that protect the rights of students and staff. Education for students: check. Training for staff: check. Guidelines that protect the rights of students and staff: check. Many across the country were watching our case closely. Some news outlets even described it as a “landmark ruling.” What does that mean? It means that what has been developed can be used by other school divisions, companies, jurisdictions – you name it. What started out as a complaint about discrimination and segregation, became so much more. Once messages of support started to flood our inboxes, Elizabeth and I quickly realized that our struggles were not so unique. And even though we moved away, we wanted to

continue the conversation to help improve the world in which Bella and others like her live. So what’s next for us? Hopefully, not much. We want to focus on the family. In BC, the public schools have a two-week spring break. How awesome is that? The first week we spent updating our house with some

minor home renovations. For the second week, I was able to check something off my bucket list. For the longest time, I have always wanted to visit Seattle, but the drive from Winnipeg was a bit of a haul. Now, since it is mere hours away, why the heck not? Space Needle, city underground tour, Pike Place Market: check,

check and check! With this big weight lifted from our shoulders, it was nice to get out and enjoy life once again: check. Dale is the director of communications for a school district in British Columbia and will continue to share his stories from afar.

Fake it ‘til you make it? For those of you who know me or have heard of me, music has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up as a teen, the thought of performing in front of a large crowd made my stomach churn. My anxiety would build for hours leading up to the moment I stepped on the stage. You could see the microphone quiver in my hand. I have seen the same fear in the workplace as well, where people just cannot handle speaking in front of their boss or their team. What do most successful individuals possess that allow them to be so powerful and effective? What about rock stars? What gives them the confidence to perform in front of millions of people? In a workplace setting, what gives team leaders the ability

to deal with difficult issues and the drive to achieve innovative business results? What do these people do and what do they have that gives them such strong belief in themselves, allowing them to succeed and tackle whatever comes their way? Are these characteristics unique to them or something that we can also possess? The “placebo effect” is something that many of us have heard of before. In 1945, while a Harvard-educated American surgeon, Henry Beecher, was serving in World War II, he ran out of morphine on duty. Near the end of the war, morphine was in short supply in the military field hospitals. A time came when Beecher had to operate on a badly

wounded soldier. It worried him that without a painkiller, the soldier might go into a fatal shock. One of the nurses quickly filled a syringe with saline and gave the soldier a shot as though she was injecting him with morphine. As result, the soldier calmed down right away and reacted as though he had actually received the drug, even though all he had was a little bit of salt water. Beecher then was able to proceed with the operation, cutting into the soldier’s flesh and stitching him back together, all without anaesthesia. The soldier felt little pain and did not go into shock. From then on, whenever the field hospital ran out of morphine, Beecher repeated the same process. The experience convinced him of the power of placebos, so when he returned to the United States after the war, he began to study the phenomenon. The placebo effect is also something that can work to trick ourselves into feeling more confident and fearless. This is because, the more we “fake” confidence, the more we are able to get through situations such as speaking in public, doing a business presentation or singing in a competition. When we receive positive feedback for doing things that are outside of our comfort zone, it can also result in us having

more confidence. Another related theory is called the self-fulfilling prophecy. The term dates back to Ancient Greece and was coined by sociologist Robert K. Murton. Essentially, it is a prediction about the outcome of a situation invoking a new behaviour that leads to the prediction coming to true. For instance, if I believed that I was going to do poorly in a job interview, that belief might lead me to change the approach I use to prepare for the interview and I would probably fail as a result. While I may have had a good chance to be successful, my belief that I would fail would impact my performance, resulting in failure as I had predicted from the beginning. Psychological research shows that the selffulfilling prophecy works for both negative and positive predictions as it indicate the beliefs we hold could have an impact on what happens next. So, the old phrase, “fake it “’til you make it” is good advice after all. As Merrian-Webster defines “confidence,” it is a feeling or belief that someone or something is good or has the ability to succeed at something. Confidence plays an important role in achieving success in our professional life and staying motivated. Fortunately, confidence is something that

can be practiced and developed. Every time we have to experience a nerve-racking situation, we progressively build our confidence and one day, we won’t have to fake it all anymore! “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” – Helen Keller Sources www.wired.com/2009/08/ffplacebo-effect/ www.youaretheplacebo.com/ a-brief-history-of-the-placebo/ www.psychologytoday.com/ blog/psychology-writers/201210/ using-self-fulfilling-propheciesyour-advantage www.brainyquote. com/quotes/quotes/h/ helenkelle164579.html?src=t_ confidence This article is intended for information purposes only and not to be considered as professional advice. Feng shui ways to maintain your home and build your wealth In feng shui, deferred maintenance on a house means deferred money. In other words, if you’ve put off replacing that cracked window or cutting down a dead tree, you’re likely not receiving all the money you could be if your home were in good repair. Why is repairing your home so important to feng shui?

In a word: chi.

The chi, or energy, of a home declines when it’s got leaking faucets or roof, when the paint is peeling or when it’s dirty and cluttered.

Simply looking at a home that’s not in good repair gives a depressed or sad feeling. You see a house – and the occupants who live there – that are in decline. Millionaires live in beautiful, attractive and maintained surroundings. If you’ve deferred maintaining your house, you could be deferring wealth too.

Rarely is the case that when a homeowner is successful, that the house is falling down. In fact, it’s most often the case that as a homeowner becomes more successful, the more a house represents that success with pretty plants, fresh paint, clean windows and a clean interior.

That’s because a home with successful occupants often have lawn and cleaning services to help them keep the home in good condition. But even if you’re not a millionaire, you can still live like one in your home, and often, you’ll find that when the house is neat, tidy, uncluttered and in good repair, you feel better and more confident. A millionaire’s home is

usually attractive and clean, and by emulating that, you will raise your home’s chi, which in turn, raises your own.

Improving your home can improve your life. Simply improving the maintenance on your house, your home pays you back in improved energy, greater opportunities and more satisfaction and contentment in life – and, yes, even in money.

Use these tips on home maintenance to the critical areas that help you create millionaire financial energy. 1. Start at the front. If your sidewalk is cracked and lifted from tree roots, it’s unlikely that opportunity will make it’s to your front door. Give the front of your house some TLC in the form of a landscape makeover, including checks on sidewalks, porches, mailboxes, light fixtures and front door. Work on your curb appeal – it will pay you in increased income and opportunity. 2. Check for leaks. From gutters to the roof, the kitchen sink to garden hoses, when water is leaking, so is money. Water can also be a source of emotional problems – whether that’s an empty swimming pool (missing water = missing money) or a case of black mould (spending on what you don’t want). When water is either completely missing or too abundant, emotions can be more volatile. Make sure that water issues are carefully attended to because of their emotional/ financial implications.

3. Sparkling windows represent clarity. Can’t focus or make a decision? Maybe it’s because the windows need cleaning. Windows represent the eyes and the way we take information in. Dirty windows hamper our ability to see our financial situations clearly. 4. Beat up doors and walls. When the dog scratches doors, walls are dirty from handprints, the feeling is that opportunity is missing and that life in general is in decline and a feeling of hopelessness settles in. Repaint walls and repair doors. Doors are the way chi enters the house – especially the front door. Make sure the way to the front door is open and attractive and that all doors work properly and smoothly. A sticky front door stymies opportunity and money and door problems are energy problems. 5. Lighten up to lift your financial chi. Never let light fixtures fill up with bugs or allow bulbs to stay burned out. Dirty lamps or fixtures, dim bulbs and burned out bulbs create the inability to see life clearly or develop initiative in your financial life. Never underestimate the power of lighting to lift your financial chi – or bring it down if they’re burned out. 6. Let the landscape go. This is a sure way to create severe financial hardship. When a landscape has dead

or has overgrown plants and weeds in the grass, there are major financial obstacles. The millionaire secret is always to pay attention to the grounds. Even if your yard is small, give it impact and put money into it because landscaping pays off financially and in your health and vitality. 7. Don’t hang on to everything. A great way to have less is to hang on to everything. Millionaire closets are neat and orderly and usually aren’t stuffed to the gills. Creating room for more is the singular best way to achieving more. Don’t be afraid to get rid of as much as possible to create more room in your life for what you want. Money is energy and when your house has too much stuff, there’s little room left for prosperity to come in.

8. Give it a good scrub. Cleanliness they say is next to godliness, and it’s true. Giving your home’s exterior a good wash with a pressure washer, and the interior a good wash, especially the kitchen results in better energy, and better energy means more money. The kitchen, and stove in particular, represent wealth and health, so keep them both sparkling!

Learning vs. performance – determining what stronger goals are As I continue to read George Couros’s work (www. georgecouros.com), I am continually having light bulbs turn on left and right. A lot of the concepts he points out are obvious, yet because no one has brought them to my attention, I truly had never noticed them. One such concept is setting learning goals with students. Some students are so focused on their performance that it actually hinders their learning. Couros illustrates with the example of learning a new language. If Student A’s goal is to get an A+ in French, this student will actually only learn what is needed to get that rank. If Student B’s goal is to be conversational in the French language, he or she will actually learn the content and skills that will most likely be applied

throughout the years. In these two examples, Student A has a performance goal – there is a clear end goal in mind. Student B, however, has a learning goal that has room to grow. After becoming conversational, he may take steps to be a better writer or reader in French, for example, until he or she can be recognized as fluent or bilingual. The same can be said in any subject, at any level of education. Here is another example at the post-secondary level: a performance goal would be to get a degree in Education, or to get on the faculty’s Dean’s List for honour students. This person strives and still achieves, but has a definite end goal or expiry date – getting on the honours list, or receiving that degree. A learning

goal would be to become an effective educator who empowers youth through student-centred learning. This person still has a specific goal for implantation, but it’s a goal that is focused on his or her learning – how to become an effective educator. This goal is not constrained to a time frame, and it will look different as this educator undertakes professional development. It is truly a goal focused on the educator’s ongoing learning, which will, in turn, increase his or her performance. Parent tip: Learn, do not just

perform! Let me make this clear: performance in any workplace and academic setting is, of course, important. It’s important to perform well as this is how you most likely will be evaluated. However, to truly perform well, you have to learn and understand your task, your intent, and your criteria. Ask yourself, and your child: What are you doing in this assignment? What are you learning? (This is different from doing.) Why is it important to learn this? What does that learning look like?

Learning is an ongoing goal of education, and with better learning comes better performance. Apply this idea, and I hope you and your family start seeing even better results! Judianne Jayme is an educator teaching sixth grade and a division-wide mentor in the Winnipeg School Division.

form sub-surface voids. They are usually formed where circulating groundwater naturally dissolves the rock beneath, such as salt beds, carbonate rock, dolomite, and limestone. Sinkholes may also form after a drought, when the water table elevation goes down resulting in the exposure of an underground cavity. Human-induced sinkholes are repercussions of land-use practices like construction and water pumping. When communities switch from septic systems to sewer systems, some of the old septic tanks are simply abandonned. Eventually, the concrete cover will deteriorate and permit the soil above to collapse rapidly, even with the just the weight of a person. If the house was constructed before sewer lines were introduced to the community, chances are there is

an abandoned septic tank within its yard. Decaying and buried organic materials such as compost and tree roots can also contribute to sinkholes. Over a long period of time, materials that have been dumped can form air pockets into which the soil steadily seeped, leaving an undermined surface that looks solid. The level of the aquifer goes down when there is drilling of additional wells that are too close to existing wells, or when there is over-pumping of current water supply wells. If you observe or suspect signs of sinkhole formations: • Barricade or fence off the hole, keep children away, and protect the area from waste and garbage; • Notify the Water and Waste Department of the City of Winnipeg; • Contact your insurance company; • Document the incident by taking notes and photographs, but avoid getting to close to the edges. Record in your statement the actions you did, including communications and referrals; and • Consult engineering firms specializing in the detection and evaluation of potential and evident sinkholes. In summary, sinkholes are uncommon in most areas, but

Sinkholes A sinkhole is a ground surface crater that develops when an underground void reduces support of the overlying soil. Sinkholes can cause structural damage and weakness under roads, buildings, and bridges. Fixing them after failure is costly and calls for specialized skills. A pedestrian can be injured or killed when walking into a sinkhole or when the ground underneath it collapses. Sinkholes can also affect water supplies through draining water from lakes, streams, and wetlands directly into aquifers. The primary cause of the sinkhole must be fixed first, or else the effort may only be temporary. There are two types of sinkholes based on how they are formed: natural sinkholes and human-induced sinkholes. Natural sinkholes develop when subterranean rock liquefies to

ELECTION... From page 1 You can also vote in advance of election day, between April 9 and 16. Check the Elections Manitoba web site or call 204945-3225 for advance voting locations, and then bring your photo ID or two other documents to vote. The political party leaders In Manitoba, voters do not vote for the premier, just as we do not directly vote for the Prime Minister of Canada. Voters choose a candidate in their own constituency or “riding,” and the party with the most elected candidates forms the government with the party leader becoming the premier. The New Democratic Party [NDP] has formed the Manitoba government since 1999, winning the last four consecutive elections. Premier Greg Selinger is the leader of the NDP. His riding is St. Boniface. Before becoming the premier of Manitoba in 2009, Selinger served as the Minister of Finance since 1999. He earned a PhD in Social Policy from the London School of Economics and taught Social Work at the University of Manitoba. He was elected MLA for St. Boniface in 1999. The official opposition in Manitoba is currently the Progressive Conservative Party [PC] under leader Brian Pallister representing the riding of Fort Whyte. Pallister owned a financial services company in Portage La Prairie and was first elected as the MLA for Portage la Prairie in 1992. In 2000, he entered federal politics, elected as the Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar, he

By Judianne Jayme On the evening of March 22nd, a group of residents, educators, and community members attended a meeting held at Maples Collegiate for an information night regarding the Filipino Bilingual Program (FBP). The meeting area was the Judy Silver Student Commons, an innovative, fairly new extension to Maples Collegiate, which also reflects the FBP as an innovative extension to the programming in Seven Oaks School Division. The FBP will see its first year for students between Kindergarten to 3rd grade. Programming will meet Manitoba curriculum, and will be instructed 40 to 50 per cent in Tagalog, with the rest in English. Bussing will be provided for registrants given that they live in the division, and depending on the location of their home (students close enough to walk, for example, will not be eligible for the bus program). Registration forms are currently available at any school in the division, but the program itself will be housed at Arthur E. Wright School. There was a strong turnout of Filipino teachers and facilitators who brought unique perspectives to the discussion of the program. Among them were the master of ceremonies, Roley Leyson of HC Avery School; the singer of the Pambasang Awit (Philippine national anthem), Nestor Ching; Noel Marzo of École James Nisbet Community School. The evening opened up with entertainment from a group of students from Arthur E. Wright School’s Filipino Club, where they learned, among other things, to dance the Polka sa Nayon. Special guests brought greetings and well wishes. Derek Dabee, who is the ViceChairperson for the Board of Trustees, celebrated the opportunity to have heritage and culture expressed. He playfully added, “Where else can you get food, dance, and inspirational messages and the cost is free?” Brian O’Leary, Superintendent of the division, acknowledged the hard work and dedication of Cory Juan and the late Rick Dela Cruz who were persistent in their push for the FBP. He updated us on the status of the registration: 20 registrants out of a required 35 to

40 students are already confirmed. Principal of host school Arthur E. Wright, Anna Mangano, demonstrated her own Tagalog learning with a greeting of “Magandang gabi po.” She commended Ms Juan for envisioning what is possible, then turning it into reality. She expressed her excitement in working with the program as one healthy, whole community. Ms Cory Juan, who spearheaded the FBP, thanked the special guests and speakers by providing them each with a book by local author and illustrator, and former school trustee, Darlyne Bautista. Ms Bautista shared some of her own experiences as someone who was born in Winnipeg, and despite the Tagalog language being available here, only learned it when she was immersed in Filipino culture during her time spent in the Philippines. Her books are bilingual and aim to bring empathy for both sides of the immigration experience – for Canadian-born individuals, and those coming to Canada from the Philippines. The books given to the guests were among Bautista’s bilingual works, and Ms Juan joked that each speaker’s first lesson is to read the books and learn new Tagalog words! She also introduced the topics for the evening’s conversations, appropriately read in both English and Tagalog. After a nutrition break, the group divided into four working groups with facilitators who shared the discussion ideas forward. Among the suggestions, questions, and ideas, came the suggestion to encourage Tagalog-speaking volunteers to support classrooms, the need for an advisory group, and also the suggestion to provide Tagalog classes for parents and guardians as well, so that children in the FBP are continually supported with their language learning at home. One goal is to see the program expanded to Kindergarten to Grade 8, then eventually to Grade 12. Congratulations again, to Ms Cory Juan and the Seven Oaks School Division for seeing the growth of the Filipino community, and for celebrating that with the Filipino Bilingual Program.

What is one day na iiwanan nilang libre para sa talent nila? See CRISTY p15

While vacationing in Palawan with Dingdong and baby Maria Letizia during the Holy Week, the Kapuso Primetime Queen shared a photo of herself wearing a bikini on Instagram, where she has at least 2.5 million followers. As of Monday, March 28, the photo has already received more than 74K likes and 1.7K comments with netizens complimenting Marian for keeping her todie-for figure. The three-time FHM Sexiest Woman in the Philippines has recently gone back to work after taking a break from her showbiz commitments after giving birth. Marian resumed hosting GMA’s Sunday PinaSaya and is preparing to do her own daily talk show on her home network. She is also set to portray the role of Inang Reyna in the much-awaited 2016 version of the hit Kapuso fantasy series, Encantadia, which will air in the second half of this year.

CRISTY... Kahit makina, e, pinagpapahinga! May mabubuo bang relasyon between them? ***

SHOWBIZ, SHOWBUZZ PILIPINO EXPRESS

PHCM Youth Forum a huge success By Paul Macaraeg and Ramon Sales The Youth Forum on Building Success event came received much positive feedback from all who attended the event. It was held on March 17th in the Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute Multipurpose Room. This event aimed to inspire the youth to become successful in their endeavours, to instill the importance of education and hard work, and to promote involvement in the Filipino and wider community. PHCM president Perla Javate said the speakers “[spoke] so eloquently, and had varied and interesting stories to share and told them with sincerity that touched a lot, if not all the folks in the audience.” As captured by twitter user @shutupskids, Mary Ann Masesar imparted 4 Ds to the youth – decide, discipline, dedicate, and don’t give up – Mary Ann’s simple guide to success. The six speakers come from different backgrounds and fields. Dr. Dario Cidro is a sessional instructor at Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba.

Jeremy Senaris is a building plan examiner for the City of Winnipeg and a Top 14 MasterChef Canada contender. Johann Generao is a digital marketing specialist, DMCI graduation donor, and co-founder of Winnipeg’s Got Sole. Mary Ann Masesar is a fitness nurse and entrepreneur. Carolina Nario is a teacher for Winnipeg School Division. Gary Sarcida is a practising lawyer. The participants also heard uplifting remarks from Mr. Lorne Belmore, DMCI Principal, PHCM Vice-President Ramon Faustino Sales, and Joyce Catenza, Royal Bank of Canada Foundation Regional Diversity Leadership Award recipient. The Youth Forum on Building Success event is part of the PHCM’s year-round activities in promoting the Filipino culture and heritage to Manitobans, and reflecting the vibrant and dynamic Canadian multiculturalism. This event was held in cooperation with the University of Manitoba Filipino Students Group (UMPinoy), Manitoba Filipino Business Council (MFBC) Inc., and Aksyon ng Ating Kabataan (ANAK) Inc.

During the break-out session, participants had the opportunity to get acquainted and network with the panel speakers. “Great group of kids! I hope I was able to inspire them with my story”, Jeremy shared on his social media. A feast of Filipino inspired dishes was served at a pop up fundraising dinner held at the In Ferno’s on Academy on March 20, 2016. The event dubbed “Fresh off the boat” served a six-course seafood dinner organized by Chef Allan Pineda, Chef Rob Austria and Chef Kevin Castro. It was held under the auspices of Baon Manila Nights – a pop up dinner series that focuses on Filipino food created by Allan and Amanda Pineda. Its main goal is to promote Filipino food in Winnipeg and be ambassadors of the “Filipino food movement” happening in North America. Portion of the proceeds from the Baon Manila Nights’ events and Baoncraft Lumpia goes to help feed the less fortunate through “The Baon Project.” You can follow Baon Manila Nights on Instagram and on Facebook. SPECIAL FEATURE PILIPINO EXPRESS

PAGE 17

By Anne Caprice B Claros He is talented yet humble. He is capable yet selfless. God has sent many angels to guide us in our journey and there is no doubt he is among them. Thirty-nine year-old Filipino-Canadian Very Reverend Geoffrey Angeles, known as Father Geoffrey, currently sits as the rector of Winnipeg’s Archdiocese – St. Mary’s Cathedral. Many will know him as the “Music Man” just as he was described in previously published features. Some may know him simply as the thoughtprovoking and encouraging priest who soulfully presides over mass. However, it is time that more about him is shared. I was fortunate to have been invited and share a wonderful conversation with Father Geoffrey. Our exchange was an intricate weave of humbling, curious, inspiring, and light-hearted discussions. I walked out of his office without any doubts that on that day I truly was in contact with the Divine. “Music was the vehicle that led me into a deeper relationship with God,” Father Geoffrey confidently states as we talk about his love for music. He is a perfect example of how God calls onto us in the most unexpected of ways. Without knowing why or how, from a very young age Father Geoffrey was already very interested and drawn to music. He claims, “Music is innate.” Although he is musically versatile, his passions lie with both singing and playing the piano. He shares with me that his cousins taught him his very first piano tune when he was eight. This then ignited a great interest in formal piano lessons. A few years later, he was given the opportunity to accompany the school choir to performances and eventually was requested to substitute at St. Peter’s Church during services. His help was much appreciated and was asked to play for the church choir on a regular basis since. Through his service at the church, he began to realize the freedoms that music can grant an individual. He was made aware of just how much music can truly impact many for the better. He was joined by a couple of friends and together they formed a band. Being undeniably talented, they were featured in many talk shows such as CKND TV with Marjorie Stevens. Most importantly however, was CKY’s Sunday Scope, Teens encountering the Church. This was a life changing experience for Father Geoffrey as he was asked to compose the music for the show. This was his initial venture into the world of composition. He has been composing and making arrangements since. His music is played, enjoyed and applauded nation-wide. While studying music in university, Father Geoffrey continued to play for St. Peter’s Church. Nonetheless, his involvement in the community did not stop there. He was also an organist and choir director for a variety of other organizations. He played at one of the

United Churches for four years and at an Anglican Church for another three years. In addition to this, he taught piano at the Yamaha School of Music. He believes that the opportunity to play for a number of different communities was a substantial blessing to him. He says, “I feel truly blessed to have been a part of all these communities while still maintaining my Catholic roots.” Along with the experiences gained from playing at services for other Christian denominations, the exposure definitely allowed him to gain a deeper understanding of his own faith. As Father Geoffrey pursued his love for music and explored the abundant possibilities awarded to him by his talents. God subtly guided him to a path of which he then was not aware. By chance, he crossed paths with St. Mary’s Cathedral rector of the time, Father Darrin Gurr, who invited him to play as an organist for the cathedral. Soon after accepting the invitation, Father Geoffrey became the cathedral’s choir director. Father Darrin Gurr became one of the most influential people in Father Geoffrey’s life. He claims that it is at St. Mary’s Cathedral that he realized that the ministry was for him. He says, “I often see that it was music that led me to my vocation as a priest. Music is very much part of what I can offer the church.” A statement of abundant truth, no doubt; it is very much evident that Father Geoffrey wishes to bring the church together through music. He believes that music inspires emotion and thought that words simply cannot. I then asked him what he wishes to encourage in his audience and what message he hopes to deliver to his parishioners. He says, “I hope for them to learn that music – as it has for me – can lead us to the divine. What I mean by the divine is not only to become the very best of who we are but also seeing the endless possibilities in the horizon.” With this in mind, I asked him to describe the kind of parish he envisions in the future and what actions he is taking to turn those hopes into a reality. He ponders over this question for a little bit and smiles. He then says, “Ultimately I see myself serving the church. Firstly, I teach as I lead the choir. I strive to aid in the formation and the development of people’s skills. Secondly, I contribute by composing music with the intent to promote a deeper understanding of the words that we are praying and a greater connection among parishioners. Lastly, I lead by example. I make sure to incorporate singing whenever possible.” He goes on to say, “I hope to help people see their value and their accountability. The church is not just a brick building. It is made of living stones. I’m there as a reminder of their importance to the church. My hope is that one day they see their purpose.” Father Geoffrey is extremely thankful to have been led into a life in which his love for music and strong desire to make a difference

in the lives of many is centre but just like any other occupation, he finds himself confronted with quite trying times as well. What is most difficult for him is the fact that there are many people in need and unfortunately he is not physically able to reach out to every single person. However, he believes that by “trusting and believing that by being prepared and offering the best [he] can, people can see the existence of the divine through [him]” and evoke a chain-effect in which the rest of the community helps those in need. Despite the difficulties he may be faced with, he proudly proclaims that his vocation truly is one of the most rewarding. He feels privileged to be able to act as a bridge between people and God. He shares, “It is a wonderful feeling to have that immediate relationship and to experience the trust that exists in my presence in the most crucial times in people’s lives.” He feels lucky to have been given the tools to be able to support, love and take part in otherwise very intimate moments in people’s lives. Whether it be preparation for marriage, the marriage ceremony itself, baptism, or even being present in the final moments of one’s loved one – all are experiences very close to his heart. He is able to develop a deep connection with these people that not everyone is fortunate to be capable of. He forms a connection not of earthly nature but rather a connection between these people and God through him. The ability to be an accessory to such a profound relationship is a gift he will always be grateful for. This trust, confidence and security he described is exactly what I felt the very moment I first walked into his office. Father Geoffrey radiates the very beliefs he safeguards. His humility and genuine care for the parish could not possibly be ignored. His words are encouraging. One thing I will never forget is when he said “I hope that we all find our purpose, to live a life in which we can be Christ to others and others Christ to us.” I felt inspired to constantly keep this thought at the forefront of my mind. There is no doubt in my mind that he has inspired many others all the same. About the author: Anne is a full time student at the University of Winnipeg. Blazing Spirits make history By Judianne Jayme Holy Ghost School (HGS) will have a new banner to decorate their gym wall – one that is making history. The Blazing Spirits girls’ basketball team has earned the title of the Manitoba Catholic Schools

Athletic Association’s (MCSAA) Girls Champions in Basketball for the 2015-2016 season. This is the first time that HGS will have a banner won by a female team – all existing basketball banners have been won by the boys’ teams. This particular group of girls, 11 in total from grades 6 to 8, blazed

through the season with 8 wins and 0 losses, as posted on the MCSAA website at the time of publication, taking the title of division champions. Talk about girl power! Congratulations to the teachers, coaches, and to the entire HGS Blazing Spirits team for their well deserved win!

CRISTY...

PCCM hosts public forum on Steps to Buying Your Home The Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) invites everyone to a free information session on Steps to Buying Your Home. This will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 12:30 p.m. at the PCCM’s multi-purpose room, 737 Keewatin St. The topics to be covered are: Mortgage Pre-Approval; Finding an Agent; Finding a Home; Making an Offer; Final Approval; Home Inspection; and Visiting your Lawyer. Guest speakers are Palmina Johnson (Home Financing Advisor – Scotiabank); Janice Butler (Branch Manager – Scotiabank, Garden City) and Laura Gallagher (Genworth Canada). PCCM President Lou Fernandez said, “We will have very knowledgeable speakers… no commitment or selling at this event. It’s purely information sharing that can be helpful to first-time homebuyers in our community… to help our kababayans avoid costly mistakes when buying a house.”

CRISTY...

Libra (Sept. Trust and respect.

Good ang ika-2, 3, 10 at 11.

*** Pilipinong tapat, may dugong-malayo, At nagmamalaking isang Bulakenyo! Paquito Rey Pacheco

CRISTY...

Convicted not through the courts but “envelopmental” propaganda. Grace Poe and Chiz Escudero tandem.

–CSF
