Vaccination super site in Garden City

Winnipeg’s second vaccination super site is expected to open as early as May 7 at 770 Leila Avenue, inside the Winnipeg Soccer Federation’s North complex, next to the Garden City Shopping Centre.

The new site will have a maximum capacity of 4,154 COVID-19 vaccine doses per day, bringing a much needed boost in the race between mass vaccinations and faster spreading COVID variants of concern.

The super site will be especially welcome in the Garden City area where many Filipinos live. At the beginning of March, the Province of Manitoba released data showing that Filipinos accounted for the greatest share of all COVID-19 cases compared to our share of the provincial population. Over a million now vaccinated in the Philippines As of April 12, the Philippines has vaccinated over a million individuals belonging to the top three priority groups – health workers, senior citizens, and persons with more than one underlying health-related condition.

The country has so far administered 1,139,644 COVID -19 vaccine doses according to Malacañang.

Of this number, 1,007,356 people were given a first dose and 132,288 were provided a second dose.

It takes a community Canada has joined with others in a global campaign promoting the positive aspects of immigration. The campaign entitled “It Takes a Community” brings international and domestic attention to the contributions of immigrants.

There is no lack of negative press against immigration in Canada and other countries so it is time to restore some balance in the public sphere. The project to promote immigration is the inspiration of stakeholders from government, business, youth networks and civil society.

It has been facilitated by the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) and led jointly by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the governments of Canada amongst others. The initiative has a noble purpose of counteracting the anti-immigrant lobby whose adherents are worldwide.

It is said that unity of purpose is having a common enemy, but what about reversing the outlook and being inspired by a common friend? The end should not be to hate and discriminate against others as perceived to be different and a threat. In our country’s recent past, we had the lobby in Quebec, extolling the virtues of native Canadians – the “us” supposedly under threat of international hordes of immigrants at the door – the “other” or “autre.” The lobby painted the pictures of “us” against “them.” However, political reason prevailed and the voters understood that there is more context to the issue than simply polar opposites because the so-called “us” includes immigrants who have added to the net value of Quebec as a province and Canada as a country.

We need to embrace inclusiveness because it actually describes who we are as a country.

Rather than build walls, we need – in words of Pope Francis – to build bridges. We need ways to bring more immigrants in and not creative ways to keep them out.

They need Canada and Canada needs them.

Canada has an ambitious immigration plan for 2021 to offset the negative impact of the global pandemic and attract the necessary human resources our country requires. Immigration provides the solution to our supply side shortfall by providing skilled workers, reunified families, and the settlement of displaced refugees and protected classes.

Each stream is included in the annual target of 401,000 landings for 2021, with approximately 60 per cent allocated to economic immigration.

Our country needs all immigrants. All serve our goals of economic and social growth and all enhance Canada’s international reputation as being one of the best – if not the best – destination for applicants from abroad. We have a vested interest in attracting and nurturing immigrant applicants but need to be aware of the loud opposition against immigration, which is promoted internationally and domestically. We cannot pull the covers over our heads and ignore these voices, but rather find an effective way to respond.

Canada has found a number of ways to respond to the critics and has embraced “It Takes a Community” as a way to offset negative press about caravans of others coming to the southern border of the United States, or the Syrian hordes travelling northward to Europe to be stopped at the Hungarian border. The consensus amongst Canadians has been in favour of immigration. But discrimination, racism, and exclusion of others has its supporters in Canada as

outdoors and a renewed clampdown on indoor activities as daily COVID-19 case tallies rise into triple digits again.

Appointments are not yet available for Winnipeg (Leila) or Steinbach. We need immigrants to secure a healthy future for the country and we also need a healthy outlook and an understanding of the positive attributes of welcoming newcomers from abroad.

“It is important to recognize the many ways that migrants and refugees are giving back and contributing positively to their communities, both in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond,” said Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

“It Takes a Community” promotes living examples of immigrants who have made positive contributions to the country and can testify to their work to integrate themselves and add to the Canadian market place and society at large.

Minister Mendicino explains the positive value and immediacy of witnesses, “by sharing their stories and speaking up about how our countries, cities and organizations are stronger when we come together, we can all play a role in this campaign to push back against discrimination and create more welcoming and inclusive communities for all.”

We can hear the voices of real frontline respondents to COVID-19, such as nurses Ibrahim, Diala, and Yehya, and others or chefs like Adel Nabil, or meat cutters working on the production line who ensure that the country has effective health care and a secure food supply. There are high skilled immigrants like Mokhles who is helping build oxygen generators to supply industrial and medical facilities across Canada, and Anas who works in manufacturing critical goods in Niagara Falls, and entrepreneurs who have opened new businesses and created new jobs. As of April 14, the eligibility to be immunized at a super site or pop-up clinic has been expanded to include individuals aged 59 or older and First Nation people aged 39 or older. Anyone who has been in Manitoba for one month or more can receive the vaccine at no cost if they meet provincial eligibility requirements.

To date (April 14), 21.5 per cent of adult Manitobans have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Counting the old way Tomás Pinpin, was the first Filipino to write and publish a printed book over 400 years ago.

Librong Pagaaralan nang manga Tagalog nang Uicang Castila (1610) was Pinpin’s manual for teaching his fellow Tagalogs the Spanish language and Catholic doctrine. The first lesson in his book was how to count in Spanish, which might seem like an odd way to start, but this new way of counting – the way we count today – was so different from the old Tagalog method that it merited special attention.

Pinpin wrote, “Dito sa unang cabanata, isisilid co ang mga pagbilang nang dilan balang na, munti’t marami; ang sa pilac at ang sa dilan tinatacal: at ang siya ngang naiibig ninyong onahing pag-aralan.” [Here in the first chapter, I will insert the counting of any number of things, few and many; of money and anything that is measured: and it is the very thing you want to study first.]

Pinpin’s intention was to teach Spanish numerals but, in the process, he unwittingly recorded the old Tagalog method of counting for posterity. It is all but unknown to us today, though it could be unique in the history of the world.

Big numbers One interesting feature of the old Tagalog counting system – though not a unique feature – was its extensive vocabulary.

There were words, only vaguely remembered now, for orders of numbers that have no equivalent in English or Spanish. Aside from the familiar pu (ten), daan (hundred) and libo (thousand), there was also laksâ, meaning ten thousand, and yutà for hundred thousand.

Pinpin only used the term sangpouóng yutà or, “ten hundred-thousands,” to express the number one million but the 1860 edition of the 1754 Noceda and Sanlucar dictionary shows two words for this number – angaw-angaw and gatós. The first word, angaw, is still in modern dictionaries meaning “million” but with an added sense that it also refers to any large, unknown or uncountable number.

Gatós is found, in one form or another, in many Philippine languages and related tongues throughout Southeast Asia and Polynesia, but it usually means “hundred.” Apparently, only Tagalog/Filipino uses daan for “hundred” while gatós is shown in today’s dictionaries as meaning “billion.” This new meaning can likely be traced back to the early 1900s when many Tagalists were inventing new words and meanings to prepare Tagalog for its eventual role as the national language. Pedro Serrano Laktaw’s 1914 dictionary shows gatós as billion but his earlier 1889 dictionary shows no

Tagalog word for billion or even million. Eusebio Daluz published a dictionary in 1915 that included a whole series of invented words for orders of magnitude up to a decillion – that’s the number one followed by 33 zeros, or in Europe, a one followed by 60 zeros. His proposed numerals never caught on, though.

Above one million, the Noceda and San Lucar dictionary shows the word kati for ten million and bahala for “hundred million.”

So, pre-colonial Tagalogs had these words for very high orders of numbers but there is a mystery here. What did they need them for? There is no evidence of advanced mathematics, high finance or massive trade deals with foreigners. The old baybayin writing system did not even have digits yet; numerals were written out in full, just the same as words. The linguist Jean-Paul Potet surmised that these large numerals were only used in speculative calculations with no practical application. He wrote in a 1992 paper, “One cannot help thinking of a deep Hindu influence (through Java) where such numbers mainly served in the calculation of the years spent in the netherworld by unfortunate souls.” Potet indicated that this view has yet to find the support of evidence.

A unique way to count As intriguing as it is, this vocabulary for very large numbers was not the outstanding feature of the old counting system.

What made the old numerals so unique was the very method that Tagalogs used to count.

We tend to think that counting works the same way in all languages because we are familiar with the numbers in English, French, Spanish, Filipino and some of the regional Philippine languages. We know that when we count beyond ten, it is a simple matter to attach the basic numerals (one to nine) to whatever multiple of ten, hundred, thousand or whatever large sum we need. So, when we add one to 20, we simply say twenty-one in English, vingt et un in French, veintiuno in Spanish and dalawampu’t isa in Filipino.

This seems like the obvious way to count in any language but it is not – and it was not always like this in Tagalog either. Even though Tagalog has its own words for numbers, the Spanish language influenced the way we count today in Filipino.

In the old Tagalog counting system, the numerals from one to 20 were the same as they are today and so was each multiple of ten, hundred, thousand and million.

That is to say, dalawampu = 20, tatlong daan = 300, apat na libo = 4000, etc.

However, the numerals in

between the zeros were very different. The number 21, for example, was not dalawampu’t isa as we’d expect; it was maikatlong isa, meaning “one in the third set of ten.” The first set of ten being zero to nine, the second set 10 to 19 and the third set 20 to 29.

The prefix maika- always referred to the next highest set of ten, hundred, thousand, etc. For example, maikapat dalawa meant “two in the fourth [set of ten]” or 32. This pattern continued until maikaraan siyam, “nine in the 100 set,” which meant 99.

Labí [in excess] was used for the numbers between 10 and 20, just like today. When we say the number 11, labing isa, it means “one in excess of ten,” but we don’t say the word “ten” because it is simply understood.

The difference in the old Tagalog method was that labí was also used consistently for the first set of numbers above one hundred, one thousand, one laksa (10,000), one yuta (100,000) and one million. (See the chart of old numbers.)

New Tagalog numerals Apparently, some Filipinos in the early colonial period were eager to learn Spanish. This is why Tomás Pinpin wrote his manual in 1610. Eventually they borrowed not only many Spanish words and numerals, but they also adapted the Spanish method of counting to the Tagalog numerals.

It is possible that it was not so much the Spanish language that influenced Tagalog counting as much as it was the digits that the Spaniards used. Pre-Hispanic people of the Philippines did not have digits like 1, 2, 3, etc., in their baybayin writing system. They just spelled out their numerals the same as words.

Tomás Pinpin took great pains to explain to his readers what we call the Arabic numerals (though they actually originated in India). When he explained that the meaning of a digit depends on its position in a string of digits, Pinpin illustrated his point with examples of large numbers. In these numbers he stated the value of each digit separately rather than just writing out the Tagalog phrase for the complete number.

This way of learning the HinduArabic digits might have affected the way that Tagalogs counted all the numbers higher than twenty.

Pinpin wrote: “Datapoua’t con ang sulat ay 1234 sa macatouid ay labi sa libo dalauang daan, at maycapat apat, ay ano yaong na onang letra dili caya sang libo; yayamang 1 nga at may casonod pang tatlo at yaong icalaua, dili caya dalauang daan; yayamang 2 nga at may casonod pang dalaua, at yaong icatlo’y dili caya tatlong pouo: yayamang 3 nga at may casonod pang isa, at yaong uacas ay dili caya apat na lamang; yayamang 4 nga at uala nang casonod.”

[However, if 1234 is written, it is therefore one thousand, two hundred and thirty-four and what is that first letter [meaning digit] but one thousand because it is a 1 and it is followed by three more

The old way is forgotten It is hard to imagine how the ancient Tagalogs could do any calculations or transactions with the old system of numerals, especially since they didn’t have digits – but apparently, they managed. Jean-Paul Potet wrote the following in his 1992 article: “My interpretation is that computation and numerical expressions were entirely separated. The former depended on an abacus drawn with a stick on the ground, which, for all its crudeness, was in no way inferior to any figure drawn on a blackboard by a mathematics teacher. The use of small pebbles as tokens should not deter us from concluding that this technique must have been fairly sophisticated; after all, didn’t calculus [reckoning] mean “small pebbles” in Latin? Once the result was obtained in this silent (?) way, it was read aloud and/or taken down in their syllabic script.”

Nevertheless, it seems that the new Tagalog numerals, which we use today, were adopted quite early in the colonial era. The archive at the University of Santo Tomas has two old bills of sale written in the baybayin script in 1613 and 1625. The dates in these documents were written using the new numerical expressions.

In the 1625 document the date was a mixture of the old and new systems. The year 1625 was

written [isang] libo, anim na raang taon, maikatlong limang taon, but in strict ancient Tagalog counting, this number would have been said, labi sa libong maikapitong raang maikatlong lima. (These two baybayin documents can be seen on my web site at www.paulmorrow.ca.)

Until recently, Canadians were seeing the horizon of a return to a near-normal life. Four COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized for emergency use, nationwide vaccination has commenced, and COVID-19 cases and deaths have become preventable. The pandemic beast would soon be tamed and a sense of optimism was high.

In less than a month since spring 2021 began, a resurgence of new cases, increased utilization of hospital beds and intensive care units, and more deaths have validated the presence of the third wave. It is more severe in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta due to the increasing dominance of variants of concern.

Update on human toll and hospitals In the past week, hospitalizations rose 26 per cent and utilization of ICU beds rose 19 per cent. As of April 13, the total number of COVID cases in Canada was 1,078,482 with a total of 23,336 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Tracker. The daily average of 8,621 cases and 36 deaths for the preceding week made for an increase of 33 per cent and 28 per cent, respectively.

Except for New Brunswick and the territories, the increases in the human toll were spread across the country – the red flag for a third pandemic wave.

Magnitude of COVID-19 variants Referring to the third wave now in “full bloom,” the Globe and Mail editorial of March 31st said: “A March that came like a lamb and went out like a lion… the country is effectively in a new pandemic, as new variants displace our reliable old.”

The Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial health authorities have been tracking the number of cases of these three variants nationwide: B.1.1.7 – 33,720; P.1 – 1,218; and B.1.351 – 357, as of April 12th. The highest numbers were in Ontario (16,761), accounting for about 70 per cent of the province’s total cases, and in Alberta (10,770); less in British Columbia (4,111) and the rest of the provinces.

These occurrences parallel the severity of the resurgence seen among the provinces. The doubling rise in the P.1 variant, first detected in Brazil, in British Columbia, Ontario and Alberta is extremely concerning because of its propensity to spread quickly.

These variants of concern are more formidable foes than the original version of SARS-CoV-2.

They carry a 63 per cent higher risk of hospitalization, 103 per cent higher risk of intensive care unit admissions, and a 56 per cent greater risk of death. However, whether they make people sicker than the original strains of the

virus is not settled. Their impact on the healthcare system is enormous and fast, creating real “moral distress.”

Younger people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s have been more affected now. Substantial numbers of outbreaks with B.1.1.7 have occurred in schools. The risk of this variant to children and their families may also be due to an inability of children to maintain social distancing and masking, and to avoid contact sports.

Schools and daycares are obvious situations for close contact transmission and the subsequent spread at homes. It is a challenge to maintain in-class learning and meet the increasing demand to reopen schools.

Variants have a selective advantage The B.1.1.7 and the B.1.351 variants bind to the ACE2 receptor-binding domain with a two-fold and five-fold greater affinity, respectively. This greater affinity helps explain why these variants are more transmissible and transmit for longer periods of time. The B.1.1.7 variant also carries a so-called “deletions” type of mutation, because it eliminates part of the genetic code and, as a result, helps this variant to escape antibodies produced during the body’s immune response to an infection. Moreover, it can cause commercial testing kits to give false negative results by failing to detect its spike protein gene. A looming new risk is the identification of so-called double mutants.

What forces could have led to the resurgence?

A number of forces may have been at play: 1. large gatherings at super spreader events, 2. vaccination has not been optimal, 3. letting one’s guard down after receiving the first vaccine dose, 4. premature lifting of public health restrictions and then delaying their re-imposition, 5. conflicting messaging over vaccines 6. distrust of leaders. 7. inconsistent enforcement of existing health measures, and 8. pandemic fatigue. It is not clear how much each of these possible forces contributed to the resurgence.

What is clear is the devastating human toll the variants of concern have exacted with their ability to spread and to affect the younger generations. Knowing these forces could help inform the design of an exit plan.

Pandemic’s third wave calls for intensive public health action Status of public health guidance Ostensibly, our hope to have every Canadian vaccinated (before a third wave) has vanished. The challenge now is to comply with safety restrictions until our vaccine rollout keeps pace with the exponential increase in the number of variants. Keeping the greatest distance, avoiding congregate gatherings, particularly indoors with poor ventilation, washing (not merely rinsing) our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or using a hand sanitizer, avoiding touching one’s face, and wearing a best-fitting face mask – these measures cannot be overemphasized.

Public Health Canada has advised against recreational travels within the country.

Lockdowns and other more restrictive safety measures have been declared in several provinces.

Current vaccination status Canada Research Chair of emerging viruses and assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, Jason Kindrachuk, said recently on CBC News, “We have a lot of virus moving around the country and escalating very, very quickly…Vaccinations are certainly starting to pick up, but we’re nowhere near where we need to be to get this thing under control.”

There is some good news As of April 13, a total of 8,583,763 vaccine doses have been administered to Canadians, reflecting a vaccination of 20.41 per cent of the total population with at least one dose (7,755,670) and 24.57 per cent of the 16 years and older eligible population.

About 2.15 per cent of the population has received the two doses. The lowest number is in British Columbia, 1.71 per cent, and only slightly higher in the other provinces – from 1.86 per cent in Newfoundland and Labrador to 4.96 per cent in Manitoba. The numbers are much higher in the three territories – from 24.09 per cent in Nunavut to 36.38 per cent in the Yukon.

That a fifth of the total population or a quarter of the eligible recipients has received one dose is a remarkable achievement.

Especially remarkable considering that Canada depends on imported vaccines for its supply and there were disruptions in the preceding two months. These figures place the country third among the G-7 and G-20 nations of the world.

It is also good news that the available vaccines protect children age 12 to 15, for whom application for emergency use authorization may be filed soon.

In addition to protecting them directly, children comprise a significant segment for

development of herd immunity.

Moreover, Pfizer has been consistently delivering more than one million doses weekly for more than a month now, and is expected to continue. Moderna has tried to catch-up with its deliveries, too. Over the next three months, Canada expects delivery of at least 22 million doses; enough to vaccinate nearly all adults come Canada Day. Our success to date does not mean we should not be open to more intensive and flexible modes of vaccination. Naturally, we all worry about the remaining 28.5 million people waiting to be vaccinated with at least one dose – essential workers at meat processing plants, warehouses and transport companies who cannot work from home, and others in similarly difficult situations. Let us all be conscious that protecting many more of our fellow Canadians with their first dose also protects us all in the community as a whole. I am confident our public health officials and provincial and territorial governments are aiming to vaccinate their populations as “quickly and as expeditiously as possible.”

How the human body responds to SARS-CoV-2 infection Each SARS-CoV-2 particle has the characteristic spikes of protein on its surface that look like a crown. These proteinspikes help the virus attach to the ACE2 receptor proteins found on the outer wall of human cells, and then enter the host cell, make more copies of themselves, which triggers infection and causes disease.

In response to the virus infection, the body forms Yshaped antibodies that bind to the spikes, marking them for destruction by the simultaneously activated T-cells.

How COVID-19 vaccines work Using different approaches, the four vaccines – Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson and Johnson (J&J) – help the body to recognize and destroy the spike proteins in SARS-CoV-2 before it can trigger infection and cause disease.

Pfizer and Moderna vaccine makers use the messenger RNA (mRNA) approach. All they need is the genetic sequence of the COVID-19 virus – just the sequence – and not the virus itself. They use a little piece of the genetic material coding for a piece of the spike protein.

Messenger RNA – a single strand of the genetic code that human cells can use to make a protein – instructs the muscle cells in the arm to make a particular piece of the virus’s spike protein called the “receptor binding domain” (RBD). When the vaccinated person encounters the wild

COVID-19 virus the immune system recognizes it as foreign and is prepared to produce antibodies.

That is, their immune system has be taught to “recognize” the virus and “remember” how to fight it off.

The mRNA is very fragile, so it is encased in lipid nanoparticles, which is a coating of a butterlike substance that melts at room temperature. That’s why Pfizer’s vaccine must be kept at ultra cold temperatures to transport and store. Moderna uses different formulations for the lipid nanoparticles and its vaccine can be transported more conveniently and can be kept stable for a month at home refrigerator temperature.

AstraZeneca and Johnson and Johnson are vector vaccines.

The genetic recipe for the spike protein is carried into cells by a genetically engineered adenovirus, which has the COVID-19 virus spike gene encoded into it. Upon entering the host cells, the vector vaccines make the cells to produce the spike protein, to which the human immune system reacts, produces antibodies and activates T-cells to destroy the cells with the spike protein. Later, when the vaccinated persons catch the real COVID-19 virus, antibodies and T-cells are triggered and ready to fight the pathogenic virus to prevent infection and disease.

Astra-Zeneca and J&J have less onerous cold chain requirements, and J&J requires only a single dose.

The four vaccines are effective to varying degrees at preventing serious COVID-19 illness, hospitalization and death. More recent data indicate they also prevent the onset of infection. Pfizer, Moderna and J&J can protect against disease due to variants.

A race between humanity and the virus “The end is definitely in sight, but we’re not there yet,” said Prime Minister Trudeau in a recent briefing. “This third wave is more serious and we need to hang in there for another few weeks to make sure that we can flatten that curve, and drop those numbers down again to give a chance for vaccines to take hold.”

His is a call for collective Canadian engagement against the common pathogenic foe.

Finding a way to improve your home’s look and feel is an important part of feng shui.

Although the art of placement is often about making changes to your home to create a change in your life, sometimes we need to change our homes simply because we don’t like the way they look or function.

You don’t have to have a reason to employ feng shui other than you simply want to go from an environment that you endure or put up with, to one you enjoy.

Simply put, tolerating your home creates negative energy.

It’s true. When you have something in your home that drips daily annoyances, that water (energy) has to go somewhere.

Where does it go? Outward in your life. It drains you of energy every time you look at that thing that you just make do with.

Take, for instance, my kitchen pantry shelves.

They were all sized exactly the same height apart. There were five of them, but I didn’t have one shelf that I could store a roll of paper towels or a tall canister on, so those things either went on the top shelf or the bottom one that sat about two inches off the floor.

Now mind you, these were staple items I used almost daily, like rice or pasta. I don’t like my food on the floor. Talk about bad feng shui.

So, one Saturday, I unloaded the bottom shelf and the one above it, and got a hammer and carefully removed the fifth shelf and the wood cleat that supported the shelf, and I lowered it three inches. Those three inches helped me gain some pantry sanity.

Now I have a whole shelf that I can put bottles of olive oil, potato chip cans or tall canisters on easily. It makes me happy when I open that door and don’t see rice sitting on the floor.

What’s even nicer?

After making this change my pantry was better organized and more efficient, and now I actually have more storage space out of my pantry. It also makes me happy to see my staples where they belong.

And this is the point.

Look around your home.

What is it that bugs you? The one window in the corner of your bedroom that always looks odd because there’s not another one on the other side?

Whether it’s a design feature of your home that gets on your nerves or something that you interact with that doesn’t work the way it should (like my pantry shelf), over time that energy brings you down.

This is especially true in a kitchen or bedroom.

Whenever you enter a room, your eyes automatically go to the defect or the thing that annoys you.

It’s not that you’re a perfectionist. It’s just how humans are wired. It’s because things that we perceive as “wrong” could hurt us when we were running across plains trying to escape being eaten by a wild animal. That’s in your DNA. Of course, a pantry shelf won’t eat you, but that toilet that doesn’t seal properly and is constantly running can drain you of money and is a sound that represents a leak – and that symbolizes draining wealth and health, and listening to it is a drain on your nerves and your pocketbook.

Why is that? Because it’s a thing you know that needs to be corrected, and having the knowledge of something that annoys you or that needs to be fixed eats away your spirit and energy.

There’s enough out in the world that we have to manage outside our four walls and that taxes our energy and spirit,

Tips for protecting your joints from rheumatoid arthritis pain Arthritic joints can’t tolerate as much stress as healthy joints.

Pushing, pulling or twisting motions can be painful. Think about ways you can avoid unnecessarily stressing your joints.

Don’t be tempted to work through your rheumatoid arthritis pain. You might make the pain worse and increase your risk of developing joint deformities.

Respect your pain If an activity causes joint pain, change the way you do that activity. Continuing the activity despite pain can damage your joint.

Forgoing the activity altogether can lead to joint stiffness through

lack of use.

As a general guideline, if pain persists for one hour after you do an activity, consider changing how you do it. For example: • Take rest breaks.

• Use adaptive tools.

• Alternate between sitting and stretching, and light and moderate activities, throughout the day.

• If you have pain in your feet, wear proper shoes. Ask your health care provider or occupational therapist for specific recommendations.

Choose the strongest joint for the job Large joints are stronger than

small ones. Save your smaller, weaker joints for the specific jobs that only they can accomplish, and favor large joints when possible.

For example: • Carry objects with your palm open, distributing the weight equally over your forearm.

• Carry your purse or satchel over your shoulder instead of grasping it with your hand. If your shoulder is painful, use a backpack.

• Slide objects along a counter or workbench rather than lifting them.

• Use your thigh muscles to rise from a chair instead of pushing off

with your hands.

Spare your fingers as much work as possible. Try to: • Avoid prolonged pinching or gripping motions. Use less force to hold tools or equipment.

• Rest your hands flat and open rather than in a tight fist.

“Kahit pagod, masaya ako sa trabaho ko, marami akong natutulungan sa abot ng aking makakaya, nabibigyan ko ng pagasa ang mga kababayan nating walang kalaban-laban lalo na pagdating sa batas,” pasasalamat pa ng nakakatakot lang pero madaling mahaling broadcaster.

Agresibo ang virus na umatake sa kaniya, akala niya ay iyon na ang kaniyang katapusan, sobra-sobra ang pasasalamat niya ngayon sa ikalawang buhay na ipinagkaloob sa kaniya ng Diyos.

Noong magpositibo siya at kinailangan nang isugod sa ospital ay isa lang ang naging tanong ni Dennis sa kaniyang sarili, “Lord, kukunin n’yo na po ba talaga ako?”

Ayon sa komedyante ay biglang bumiyahe sa nakaraan ang kaniyang isip, naalala niya ang kaniyang mga anak, lalo na ang maliliit pa na nangangailangan ng kaniyang suporta at pagmamahal.

Puro dasal ang kaniyang ginawa, iyon ang pinagkunan niya ng lakas sa paglaban, kapag ganoon daw kasing parang nasa gilid ka na ng bangin at sa isang pitik lang ay mahuhulog na ay wala ka nang ibang gagawin kundi ang tumawag sa Diyos at magsisi.

Huwag gawing biro ang COVID-19. Hindi natin nakikita ang ating kalaban. Huwag naman sana pero paano kapag ang mga tao namang walang kunsensiya ang mabiktima?
